Read all about Mark and Mary’s Scottish-themed wedding

Mark and Mary first met at work and became attracted to each other’s personalities. Mary says, “We both work in the care sector, so we’re naturally very caring to one another.” She adds, “One day Mark turned and gave me a certain look, from that moment I knew he was the one.”

After spending lots of time together, the pair decided they wanted to get married and started looking for rings. They set the day for June 26th 2021, and they worked hard to plan the perfect day that represented them both.

Here Mary shares details about their special day…

We wanted the whole family together on the day, but Covid-19 meant that we couldn’t have the big wedding we started planning in 2018 – we’re hoping to get everyone together in the future to celebrate. When planning the wedding, we wanted to tie the knot in Derby and use local suppliers.

We already knew of Breadsall Priory Marriott Hotel & Country Club and were impressed with the building and gardens when we first visited. We placed Scottish treats on a table for guests to enjoy, including Irn-Bru, Tunnocks Teacakes and Caramel Wafers.

Our flowers reflected our tartan colour scheme perfectly. We opted for a red velvet and chocolate orange tiered cake, which was decorated with Bannockburn-tartan icing and a thistle on top.

Each place name featured a stag to continue the Scottish theme. I wore an vintage film-style dress and accessorised it with a tartan sash to match the groomsmen. I was emotional when I first saw the completed look; it was exactly what I was after.

Mark and the 10 groomsmen wore full-highland dresses.

The three bridesmaids all wore full-length lilac gowns and had matching bouquets.

The whole wedding was amazing and exactly what we’d hoped for. Mark’s dad is getting frailer and we wanted him at the wedding. In the end, he was able to attend the whole day and wore the full-highland dress together with the other groomsmen.

Only two of the groomsmen had worn a kilt before, so Mark coached the others on how to wear it and they all looked great on the day! We visited Scotland for our honeymoon, which we planned together and the weather was lovely!

Our advice for other couples would be to hire someone to help plan the day because there are so many different things to consider and many factors we’d never thought of before.
