I

love this time of year, not only because I am a magpie who loves anything that sparkles, but because it’s an opportunity for me to create a magazine full of seasonal splendour! If you’re putting the finishing touches to a micro wedding this winter then our hot topic feature offers plenty of tips. For those planning a larger affair next Christmas then our venue section is a must-read. It’s always fun for me to compile our end-of-year issue so I asked some of my favourite wedding photographers in both regions to send me their favourite wintry real weddings crammed full of fab festive ideas - you’ll love the outcome! There’s also glittery accessories, fairytale wedding dresses, fashionable groomswear and big-day beauty, along with much more, so I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did compiling it, and I’ll see you next year. Until then...

VICTORIA’S RESTAURANT OPENS IN CHELTENHAM Cheltenham’s hottest new restaurant Victoria’s has recently opened, promising the best of British seasonal cuisine in a magnificent Georgian setting with views of the Imperial Gardens. The mouth-watering menu takes inspiration from Cheltenham's quintessential English heritage, working closely with local producers and farmers to serve classic dishes with a contemporary twist. Using freshly baked bread, local cheeses, locally farmed meat from artisan butchers and fruit and vegetables sourced from local markets, Victoria's brings the very best of Gloucestershire's producers together on one menu. The restaurant will be serving classic dishes such as a pear Waldorf salad, gin and citrus cured salmon, chalk stream trout filet, shepherd’s pie made using Cleeve Hill braised lamb and Waghorne steaks with triple cooked chips. Indulgent desserts include a warm vanilla bread and butter pudding, pecan treacle tart and a raspberry ripple knickerbocker glory. Adding a touch of playful nostalgia, Victoria’s is also creating culinary theatre with the addition of a dining room trolley that guests can pick and choose from as it’s presented at each table. The stylish decor offers warm raspberry accents while diners enjoy the town’s finest architecture and stunning views. Guests enter via the secluded garden at Queens Hotel Cheltenham – MGallery Hotel Collection. To book, call 01242 514 754 or visit https:// queenshotelcheltenham.co.uk/victorias www.instagram.com/mgallerycheltenham

Wiltshire gin available nationwide

The Ramsbury Estate spanning more than 19,000 acres of rolling farmlands in the heart of Wiltshire is one of just a handful of distilleries in the world to craft its spirits from field-to-glass creating beverages combining ingredients grown on the Ramsbury Estate. The multi-award-winning Ramsbury Single Estate Gin and Vodka will be available in Waitrose nationwide, and online at www.waitrose.com, from January 2021, at a special offer of just £27 per bottle. The new contemporary design keeps sustainability at its heart, making an impressive addition to any wedding drinks reception. Details such as the cork closure with a plant cellulose wrap are used to secure the top instead of plastic, and the 100% recyclable tinted glass means guests can enjoy it knowing that it’s kind to the planet. Louisa Makin, UK country manager at Ramsbury tells us, “We hope this shows how easy it is to enjoy a quality and premium spirit that is not only sustainable but also tastes great. The eye-catching new bottle design helps bring to life the unique, inimitable taste of the spirits which is achieved by using ingredients grown on the Ramsbury Estate.” For further information, visit https://ramsbury.com www.instagram.com/ramsbury_distillery

WARDROBE WALLED GARDEN WEDDINGS

A newly launched wedding and events venue in the heart of historic Salisbury.

A marquee will be positioned in the beautiful garden (your choice of style) and we can accommodate up to 150 guests. For smaller numbers a reduced sized marquee is available.

The Wardrobe is a secret hideaway located to the rear of the Rifleman’s Museum. It is situated in the tranquil setting of the cathedral close and the wonderful garden leads down to the banks of the river Avon. With the rolling countryside beyond, it is difficult to imagine a better location within the Salisbury city limits for any outdoor event, be it a wedding reception, celebration or garden party.

The on-site caterer is the award-winning Vanilla Catering & Events. Vanilla’s key ethics are attention to customer service and the use of top quality local ingredients. These result in bright, modern food styles presented with attention to detail in an unfussy yet friendly manner. A bespoke menu is created for each client and a complimentary wedding planner is provided to run your special day. An interesting fact: did you know why we are we called The Wardrobe? The original building on the site was constructed in 1254. It was rebuilt in the 15th century and was used to store the robes of the Bishop of Salisbury; hence it was known as the “Bishop’s Wardrobe” or “The Wardrobe”!

The walled garden is totally enclosed and private covering over half an acre. It also has numerous specimen trees including one of the finest copper beach trees in Wiltshire. The walled garden can be privately hired for your wedding, party or event.

The front courtyard is the perfect place for confetti-throwing, photographs and a drinks reception while the rear courtyard welcomes an outdoor cooking station for street-style food served during the evening, seating beneath the traditional pole barn decorated with festoon lighting and a giant chess game.

A fairytale day

anielle and Adrian met 13 years ago whilst working for the same company in Bristol. “The very first time we met was when Adrian decided to take our team out for a thank you drink,” Danielle tells us. “We got chatting and ended up drinking numerous bottles of flavoured Lambrini before dancing around poles and sharing a kiss in the basement of Reflex nightclub! Adrian was my line manager at one point, meaning that our early days of dating were spent in secret, which was exciting and kept us on our toes,” Danielle reveals. The couple became engaged in a surprise proposal at luxury hotel Ellenborough Park in Cheltenham. “We had visited the hotel to enjoy a champagne afternoon tea that friends from work had treated me to for my 40th birthday,” Danielle explains. “I wasn’t expecting Adrian to propose even though we had talked about marriage. He had everything prepared - he had already asked my father for his permission and got down on bended knee with a ring box. When I opened it, there was a little note inside that said ‘I owe you something shiny’ because, after 13 years together, he knows me well enough not to have chosen the ring but instead, pick one together! It was all so romantic.”

SETTING THE SCENE The moment the couple visited Clearwell Castle, they knew it would be their wedding venue. “It was simply breathtaking,” Danielle tells us. “It looked like something from a fairytale, with manicured gardens and the beautiful ballroom that worked perfectly for the ceremony and the wedding breakfast. We both loved the fact that we could have exclusive use of the venue and host our entire day in one place, and then stay over with all of our friends.” Adrian had another reason why he wanted to get married in the castle. He tells us that, “Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple are just some of the rock bands who used the castle to record their albums in and being a big rock fan, I loved the fact that we would be able to party where my idols had created some of their masterpieces!” The couple chose an ivory and burgundy colour theme for their venue décor. “The team at the castle arranged our flower displays to decorate the venue that tied in with our chosen colours and they also organised the burgundy chair sashes,” Danielle explains. “Our cake complemented our colour theme with handmade burgundy and ivory sugar flowers created for the topper that cascaded down the entire 27 

REAL WEDDINGS cake. The top two tiers were made from ivory buttercream while ivory fondant icing was used on the bottom tier together with handmade sugar twists decorating the bottom layer. The top tier was a fruitcake, the middle one was chocolate and the bottom tier was lemon-flavoured – it was delicious!” The catering was taken care of by the talented team at Clearwell Castle which included the arrival drinks, canapés, wedding breakfast and the evening buffet. Danielle got creative and made the table centrepieces from empty gin bottles. “We placed different gin bottles filled with fairylights next to ivory birdcages holding candles on each table with scattered crystals in the centre,” she tells us. “Our mirrored table plan displayed our guests’ names underneath each gin bottle and I ordered the template for the place names on Etsy and then changed the font to suit our theme.”

LOOKING THE PART Danielle’s dress was a fishtail gown with cut-out detail at the sides. “It featured pearl beading and a train at the back. I teamed it with a veil, which I initially had no intention of wearing but my younger sister suggested it and I loved it,” she tells us. She carried a stunning shower-style bridal bouquet featuring burgundy and ivory flowers that included black baccara roses, ivory cymbidium orchids and burgundy hypericum berries. “It complemented my dress beautifully,” Danielle tells us. “Our bridesmaids held bouquets of gypsophila that suited the burgundy dresses that they had chosen themselves, and gypsophila was also used in the buttonholes, while the corsages for our mums included the deep burgundy black baccara roses.” Adrian and his groomsmen chose traditional navy morning suits paired with pale gold waistcoats, grey herringbone trousers, and burgundy cravats and pocket-handkerchiefs.

TIME TO CELEBRATE The team at Clearwell Castle organised a DJ for the evening disco which was held in the old recording studio located in the basement. “When we sent out our invitations, we asked our guests to list three songs that they would dance to if they were played,” Danielle tells us. “This meant that we had a full playlist to please everyone.” The couple also organised a photo booth, where their guests could dress up with fun hats, wigs and glasses. “The booth printed out two strips of four passport-style photographs so that our guests had a memento and we could make a memory book where everyone could leave a message for us,” Danielle explains. The couple also had Jemima Phillips, former harpist to HRH The Prince of Wales, play music that they had chosen. This varied from romantic tracks as the guests arrived, to the Glasgow Love Theme by Craig Armstrong taken from the film Love Actually as Danielle walked down the aisle. She also played some funky rock songs during the drinks. “Everyone loved it when she played Sweet Child of Mine by Guns N Roses - it sounded fantastic!” Danielle says.

“I stayed at the castle the night before our wedding with my sister and two best friends and Adrian arrived on the wedding morning in his Porsche. We arranged for some of our guests, who were coming from Cheltenham, to be picked up and dropped back to a central point in by a minibus operated by Bouden Coach Travel which helped everyone.” - Danielle.

“My wedding planner at the castle, Zoe Pritchard, was fantastic and so calm. She was there from start to finish on the day and ensured that everything ran like clockwork - it was the most perfect day.” - Danielle.

LAST CHRISTMAS

Jessie Dennis, 30, married James Yeoell, 32, on 7th December 2019 at Hyde House in Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire.

essie and James grew up in the same village and have known one another most of their lives. “When I opened my cake shop, James sometimes visited with his mum so we started chatting and it went from there,” Jessie tells us. “It all just fell into place, and because our families were already friends, it felt like we were one big family right from the start!” The couple became engaged at Cheddar Gorge. “We had both visited there before and loved it so decided to take our dog, Bella, for a walk,” Jessie says. “As we were admiring the beautiful view, the sun came out and I picked up Bella to show her and as I turned around, James was down on one knee! He had the ring handmade for me and chose how it was designed – it was so special.” Here, Jessie tells us more about their Christmas-themed day... 33 

We wanted to have our ceremony and reception at one venue close to Swindon where we lived. I had always dreamt of a Christmas wedding so it was a dream come true.

Our table plan was presented on a mirror that we decorated. Our table numbers were wooden and painted red and dipped in glitter. I made the place names using a silver sparkly card with the names on in a decorative font. I handmade our favours which were baubles filled with chocolate tiffin which I made in my cake shop. They were finished with red and white roses, hearts and ribbon.

Our centrepieces were branches hand-picked from the woods and sprayed silver. We added lots of red, white and silver Christmas baubles.

“My mum was amazing, she supported me through the entire planning, making lists and helping me with all of the prep. I couldn’t have done it without her. - Jessie 34

We kept our flowers simple using red and white varieties. Our bridesmaids carried posies of white roses that were reflected in the buttonholes. James had a red rose for his buttonhole and I had red and white roses in my beautiful bridal bouquet.

REAL WEDDINGS

I made our two-tier naked cake with lots of cupcakes displayed underneath. They were all topped with red and white roses and displayed against a sparkly silver sign saying ‘together forever’ and looked, and tasted, incredible.

We loved the fairylights that were draped from the ceiling creating a romantic ambience. We also had candles displayed on the tables in the barn and rose petals scattered on the floor.

We had a flower arch made using red and white ro backdrop for our ses as the ceremony which looked amazing. Our sweetie table went down a treat!

I tried on four dresses before finding the one. I was with my mum and we both cried when I walked out of the dressing room! It had a beautiful lace design on the bodice and featured a long, full skirt with the shape suiting my figure. I added a sparkly belt that was sewn on.

We decided that we wanted James and his groomsmen to wear navy tailcoat suits and he had a red rose rather than a white one in his buttonhole. They wore grey and cream waistcoats and cravats with white shirts.

A winter’s tale

Katie and Matthew styled their seasonal wedding with a grey, silver and red colour theme and a nod to their love of books Images courtesy of Adam Drake Photography

K

atie and Matthew met when they were both working as extras after university. “Both of us had recently graduated and were extras on the set of Dr Who,” Katie tells us. “Matthew was a keen reader and recommended a book that I should read. He became my best friend pretty much instantly, it was like we had known each other forever. We loved the same things including films, discovering new books to read, walking and travelling. I was attracted to Matthew because I could see that he was ambitious and wanted to make the most out of life, and I wanted to be part of that journey with him.” The couple became engaged on holiday in Iceland. “We had spent the day exploring geysers and hot springs,” Katie says. “We walked to Gullfoss waterfall and climbed up to a viewing point that was very secluded and Matt proposed as we were admiring the view. He was very emotional as he got down on one knee and the rest is a blur but I remember us both crying and laughing a lot! There was one other person at the viewing point who we didn’t notice was there until afterwards. She came over and told us that she had taken a picture. It’s the best photograph ever!” Here, Katie tells us more about their literary-themed day.

Katie Jones, 31, married Matthew Thomas, 31, on 16th November 2018 at Cripps Barn in Cirencester, Gloucestershire. 39 

“We hired a string quartet who played All You Need Is Love by The Beatles as I walked up the aisle. They played so many other wonderful songs while our guests arrived, during the ceremony and throughout the drinks reception.” - Katie

Cripps Barn has open fires, Cotswold stone walls, lots of candles displayed around and an outdoor firepit which was everything we wanted for our romantic winter wedding.

I noticed that my dad was very emotional when he saw me in my dress for the first time. I ushered my bridesmaids out of the room and we waited for the taxi to arrive. We didn’t say very much, but I felt so happy that he was there. A calm moment, just the two of us. We scattered pictures of our guests who were sat at each table as a conversation starter.

Matt and I sat at a sweetheart table because we had plenty of immediate family members to fit on to one table. It was the best decision we made because it gave us some time to reflect on the day together. 40

METAL AND STONE BESPOKE JEWELLERS These days, fitted wedding rings have become the most fashionable option, and for good reason. Aside from the obvious enhancement to the beauty of the engagement ring that is a natural consequence of a fitted wedding ring, having the engagement and wedding rings interlock significantly reduces the wear and tear placed on both of those rings, thereby greatly extending the longevity of the two pieces. Symbolically, having a wedding ring fitted to interlock with the engagement ring so perfectly captures the spirit of the joining of two people together to form a new unified couple, which is of course, the whole point of marriage. Fitted options include simple bands with a sinuous curve that follows the lines of the engagement ring, either with or without stones, as well as the classic wishbone style, also available with or without stones. In addition to these classic styles, exclusively, Metal and Stone Jewellers manufacture a number of rings we call Diamond Enhancers. These are diamond set rings which quite literally interlock with your engagement ring to form what might at first glance be mistaken as being a single ring, entirely embracing the symbolism of the joining together of two people in marriage as no other ring combination can do. At Metal and Stone, each ring is individually crafted to suit your particular needs, which is never more important than when creating fitted wedding rings. Another advantage to the bespoke process is cost. Ironically, it is often more cost effective to have a bespoke ring created for you, as budget can be taken into account during the design phase of the process of having your ring tailored to your particular requirements. Wedding and engagement rings will be worn for a lifetime and may reasonably be expected to become family heirlooms, yet at the time of purchase, budget must be a real consideration, which is why going to a specialist jewellers, such as Metal and Stone, where both your budget and your sense of the aesthetic are sensitively taken into consideration, may be one of the best decisions you’ll ever make.

EXPERT ADVICE

HOT TOPIC

Our regional experts share their top tips

KNEES UP

Meet the experts: The Bees Knees Barn Dance Band are based in Gloucestershire with more than 20 years of experience playing at weddings. Can you give us some entertainment ideas for our micro wedding this spring? Norma says: Why not consider a barn dance band? Our line up is an accordion player (myself), a guitarist, a concertina and a caller to lead guests through the dances. This type of wedding entertainment can be enjoyed by all ages making your celebrations a truly memorable experience. I can also provide solo background music on the accordion at an appropriate moment during the event. For small gatherings, we can perform with just two (married) people playing the accordion and guitar, with one providing directions for a small number of couples or individuals to dance according to the social distancing regulations. In between dances, or if dancing is not allowed and for people who prefer to listen, we play a selection of traditional and well-known tunes. The music is not too loud to prevent normal conversation. We can also cater for larger occasions when restrictions lift either acoustically or with our amplification. Bees Knees Barn Dance Band | 01453 885 543 | www.facebook.com/beeskneebarndanc

Meet the expert: Jayne Cooper is part of the events team at Drive-Tech, the West Country’s premier skid pan, karting and off-road driving centre based at Castle Combe Racing Circuit in Chippenham, Wiltshire. Can you give us some fun ideas for an unusual stag and hen celebration before our micro wedding in spring? Jayne says: There’s a lot of unknown in the world right now but one thing is for certain, Drive-Tech are here to keep you safe whilst you have fun on your stag or hen experience! Outdoor go-karting is a perfect choice, a thrilling adventure as you race around the track, fighting for the best racing line and battling to be the first past the chequered flag, If you’re good enough to make the podium then there’s a trophy to take away. Team Groom or Team Bride will not be disappointed, the thrill is still there, Covid-19 has not taken that away! When you are sat in the kart, with the engine running, the experience will be as exciting and thrilling as it always has been. There’s nothing like a bit of adrenalin pumping to get the party started! Face masks are mandatory where possible, antibacterial wipes and hand sanitiser are part of our everyday measures and suits and helmets are sanitised and bagged for sole use only. Vehicles are sanitised between each driver and we have social distancing in place where possible. Drive-Tech | 01249 783 010 | https://drivetechltd.co.uk | www.instagram.com/drivetechltd

A TOUCH OF SPARKLE

Meet the expert: Jeff Lippman is the owner of Cheltenham-based jeweller Metal and Stone specialising in creating one-off bespoke pieces within each customer’s budget. We are considering having our wedding rings custommade. Is it expensive and do you have any tips? Jeff says: Custom-made jewellery that fits perfectly often works out more purse-friendly for clients. The main advantage is that the item is a one-off piece that reflects each couple’s style. I like to work with customers getting a feel for what they like to create the perfect piece. The original stones in an existing item, like a family heirloom or sentimental ring or necklace, can be re-set or the metal refined, for example, yellow gold can be melted down and made into a new rose gold item. THE CROWN AND THE David Emanuel shares his top tips to help you say “yes” to the dress

n w o g F

ashion designer and broadcaster David Emanuel is a much-loved household name, regarded as the don of bridal fashion since creating that iconic wedding dress for Lady Diana Spencer 40 years ago. CWM’s Kelly Andrews caught up with him at the launch of Bromley Brides’ new Wonder Room to find out about his plans for celebrating this career milestone.

Dave Benett for Getty Images

What advice would you give to a bride-to-be setting foot inside a bridal boutique for the very first time? Try to keep an open mind and be objective. Think about what you’ve got at home. You might have an evening dress and you love the shape. So, why don’t you think about that same shape for your wedding dress? A lot of brides get completely wound up, particularly the ones who’ve over-shopped. When they tell me they’ve tried on 200 dresses, there’s clearly something wrong there. Equally, they might come in with a set idea – “I want skin tight, I want sexy.” It’s interesting, as it changes. I’ll say to them, “Put it on and look in the mirror. On your wedding day, are you going to be comfortable?” Then of course, you’ve got to take the time of year into account, where it’s happening, where the party’s going to be and all of that.

76

What do you need to consider before you start shopping? It’s all to do with the personality and character of the bride. If she’s a showy girl, that’s lovely, put her in a showy frock, but if she’s quiet, put her in something more modest. I go back mostly to Say Yes To The Dress, when the first question I ask is: “Do you have a budget?” She might say £3,000 and we can stretch to various styles with that. Then she’ll say, “I want more,” at which point the mother pipes up saying she’ll throw in another thousand. If they’d just said that in the beginning it would have been an

FASHION INTERVIEW easier task. I tell you, that show kept me on my toes!

It doesn’t have to be fantasy; you need simplicity for longevity.

What are the common pitfalls that brides should avoid when dress shopping? Invariably, brides will go on the internet and they’ll see these very glamourous models wearing these fabulous dresses, and they’ll rip pages out of magazines, but are they being realistic? Look in the mirror and be honest with yourself, try to be objective. I know it’s difficult, but look at yourself and think: what do I really want? You’ll go through various stages; you’re not going to get the first dress. I’ll suggest something, and the bride might say she couldn’t possibly, but I’ll insist she slip into it. Once she realises how great she looks, we go down a different path. So, keep an open mind, and let the girls at the boutique do their job, which is to make you look wonderful. You’ve got to trust them. Don’t forget: they’ve dressed hundreds of brides.

Do you think the Covid-19 pandemic has had an effect on the way brides think? I think, if anything, it’s got to completely focus the brides, because they’re under pressure. They might have booked, then have to unbook, and they’ve got to replan. It’s changing by the day – guest numbers are limited, but you know what? That’s not a bad thing actually. Let’s think about it: you don’t have to worry about auntie Flossie and uncle Albert who you only see once every two years! All that pressure is gone. You really should want just the people who love you to be there. Then, if you want to have a bigger party next year, or whenever, the heat is taken off. It should be a joyous time, enjoy it.

Based on your experience on Say Yes To The Dress UK, what’s your take on the ever expanding bridal entourage? Too much! You might have six people, with six points of view, six different tastes. No, we’re concerned with the bride. Sometimes, even the bride’s mum can’t get it, so you’ve got to rely on the very good stylists at your boutique, who are there to help you.

Knight Classical

What are your tips for creating the ultimate timeless look? You want to keep it relatively simple, but dramatic. You see, an iconic wedding gown has to have something about it – Diana’s was a 25ft train. Well, it needed drama, this was St Pauls, it was enormous, you couldn’t do a simple, quiet little dress. Or like Meghan’s gown – the story on that dress was the embroidered flowers from the Commonwealth. Big veil, but that was her message, and that was a simple dress.

Tell us about your involvement with Bromley Brides. When I found out (owner) Becky Griggs had been planning to expand and was still going ahead, I thought that was really courageous. I was blown away by the store the first time I came here, it looks great. I like people who take risks, good for her! The Wonder Room is camp and mad, great for a party. Get the dress, then celebrate it! It’s the 40th anniversary of Princess Diana’s iconic wedding dress next year. Do you have any plans to mark the occasion? I never thought I’d be sitting here talking about 40 years! I don’t know where the time’s gone, it’s like a dream. A lot has happened in my life, and this is a very exciting time. We’ve been bombarded by people wanting to do interviews and documentaries, so we’ve got to sit down, let the dust settle and go through everything. When I travel the world, designing Diana’s wardrobe is my calling card – everyone knows who I am because of it. Everywhere I go, people talk very highly of her, and it’s exciting that people still want to do something for her. What was it like to work with Princess Diana? She was the sweetest girl, as divine as you saw

her, no different. It wasn’t all done for the TV and press, she really was lovely. One time we were doing a fitting at Buckingham Palace and we didn’t have our van with us that day, so she asked us how we were getting back. We were planning to call a black cab, but she insisted on taking us herself. She had this little Ford, so we climbed in - Diana driving, me in the front and Elizabeth in the back. It was hysterical, when we stopped at traffic lights, people were aghast. There she was, giggling, it was so much fun. That’s what I remember about her, the fun. I was very fortunate, very honoured and lucky to design several foreign tours for her, and there were a lot of clothes to be done. She’d ring on a Monday and say, “Hi, it’s me.” She’d go on to say that she’d got something special and had nothing to wear, so I quickly had to think. We’d turn up the next day with sketches and some fabrics, and by Friday it was all wrapped and sent for her to wear that evening. We had to turn it around fast, and do you know, without fail she’d always say, “Thank you so much, I know you worked so hard.” It was touching. If you’re lucky along this road, you’ll meet one or two special people and she was one of them. You’ve dressed plenty of famous bodies over the years, who was your most memorable? I was in Paris, as Elizabeth Taylor couldn’t come to London for a fitting. She was at the George V Hotel in a huge suite, and I put her in a chocolate brown Chantilly lace cocktail dress. She looked fabulous and I didn’t have to put one pin in it. She threw open the double doors, and burst through them crying, “Franco, Franco, what do you think?” There he was, Franco Zeffirelli, the film director! All I could think was: “OK David, keep calm.” He loved the dress, but, she said, there was just one little problem. She would be wearing it to the White House and might have to dance with the President, but wasn’t sure she could. With that I grabbed her and spun her around the whole suite. “I think I can dance in this dress,” she said when we stopped waltzing. Listen, when those eyes fixed on you it was all over. She was special, she was real. It’s magic, private moments like that, which make your career, they’re precious. As I’m saying it, I could be back there, it seems like yesterday. Yet, I can’t believe… 40 years!

R+Co Waterfall Moisture + Shine Lotion £25, www.beautyrebel.store/rco

Michael Van Clarke 3 More Inches Volumising Mousse £12.50, www.vanclake.com

“The amount of styling product I go through is staggering. Not because I use a lot, but because I can’t find anything that does what it says on the tin, without making my fine hair greasy, and weighing it down. So, ‘here we go again,’ I thought as I tried this, the next on my quest. But, as soon as I squeezed Waterfall from the tube, I knew it would be different, feeling somehow light in texture. Plus, the fragrance was divine! Designed for fine to medium locks, my hair drank the lotion in, and by the time I blow-dried it, it was super-shiny, light and manageable, with no oily residue to be found. For me, it’s the holy grail of styling products!” – Kelly Andrews

“I’m a bit of a mousse novice, so I’m surprised that the first one I tried I love! It definitely gave my normally fine hair volume. I could feel the difference straight away, from the first use and blowdry. It left my hair soft and silky with no residue left behind – you wouldn’t even know I’d used any product! This is perfect for those brides wanting a naturally voluminous look and feel.” – Danielle Harvey

Philip Kingsley Elasti-Styler 5-in-1 Treatment, £34, www.philipkingsley.co.uk “This new product from Philip Kingsley promises to strengthen, tame and add shine, even to hair that’s hard to manage. My short locks tend to stick out in every direction, but with a small amount of the treatment, I found it very easy to style. I tend to use when my hair’s wet, but it’s also great for styling and taming frizz on dry tresses. My hair smelled great, and I even received a few compliments. I’d highly recommend it.” – Melissa Barker

GREAT HAIR DAYS SheaMoisture Sugarcane Extract & Meadowfoam Seed Silicone Free Miracle Styler £14.99, www.boots.com “Call me a cynic but I’m always a bit dubious of anything billed as a miracle product. However, this leave-in conditioning treatment does exactly what it claims to. Made with a blend of natural botanicals it does it all – detangles, nourishes, softens, adds shine and the list goes on. I put it to the test when I was in dire need of a trim and it worked like magic taming my unruly hair, making it easy to style, frizz-free and fragrant. I didn’t even have to use my heated tongs to tweak it into shape – hallelujah!” – Sarah Reeve 80

Fudge Professional Salt Spray £11.50, www.beautybay.com “There’s nothing better than achieving natural beach waves from the salt, sun and wind from a day spent at the seaside. However, since we can’t just pop to the ocean every day to achieve this desired look, Fudge Professional Salt Spray does the same job. My hair is on the fine side, and I love adding texture and waves to add volume and movement. The lightweight texture offered me medium hold, without turning crunchy and drying out my locks. It’s so easy to use, simply spray onto towel-dried hair, give a slight scrunch with your hands and leave to air dry. My top tip would be to plait your hair after use to create more defined waves.” – Olivia Gibson

EXPERT ADVICE

Beauty

Q&A Our experts answer your Christmas beauty questions

Please can you give me some fun ideas for my Xmas-themed wedding hair and make-up?

Meet the expert: Juliet Draper is a hair and make-up artist based in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, covering weddings throughout Gloucestershire, Worcestershire and the Cotswolds. Juliet says: With Christmas around the corner, now’s the time to consider your seasonal hairstyle. For something a bit different, consider wearing small red, green and gold tree baubles entwined with sprigs of pine and fresh holly berries added to a comb, slide or even a flower crown. For a more minimalistic look, have small gold, red or green baubles individually wired to hairpins and scatter them throughout your locks. Alternatively, a hair vine with sparkly gold or silver stars will look festive and current. These ideas will suit an up-do, half-up style, long locks worn down and even shorter styles.

Meet the expert: Gemma Hull is a hair and make-up artist based in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Gemma says: An Xmas-themed wedding is an opportunity for any hair and make-up artist to work with a varied colour palette. Moving on from autumnal weddings featuring burnt orange, cream and rusty tones, we get the chance to use berry red, warm burgundy and chocolate brown - the inspiration is endless! As a hair and make-up artist for more than 25 years, I have to admit that Christmas-themed weddings are my favourites. Brides can opt for a glamorous look using liquid eyeliner to emphasis the shape of their eyes and either a statement red lipstick or a beautiful berry shade. Depending on whether you decide to wear your hair up or choose a style that leaves your locks mostly down, the options for a Christmas wedding are endless. Ask your florist to create a flower crown using different types of foliage and berries, or another fun idea is a chunky braid with berries entwined in it. A top tip is to try and get something similar for the hair trial to ensure that you feel comfortable wearing it. Bridesmaids could opt for a traditional Christmas bow finishing a ponytail. It could be accessorised with red and green ribbons, or even have a candy cane looped through it!

Meet the expert: Make-up by Natasha Louise is an award-winning freelance make-up service based in the heart of the Cotswolds covering weddings throughout the area. Natasha says: After almost a year of lockdown, now’s your chance to wow your groom with your winter bridal look. When it comes to beauty, this season is all about romance, offering the perfect opportunity to experiment with bold colours including red, orange and copper. Winter brides should also consider pink, bronze and plum tones to complement these and make a bold statement. A timeless look that suits most wedding dress styles is a classic red lip for a touch of glamour, and the natural look is ideal for a more traditional or rustic-style ceremony combined with gold and beige tones. Those wanting full-on glamour should consider a sparkly gold, silver or bronze eyeshadow with a hint of glitter finished off with some dramatic eyelash extensions.
