A SPRING IN OUR STEP I
hardly dare believe it, but at the time of writing this, there was at last a blueprint for the shape of things to come for weddings in 2021. We’re all keeping everything crossed that the roadmap out of lockdown will lead to happy times ahead for everyone. With a phased startup plan for weddings, beginning small and building up to the final objective of no restrictions come June 21st, there’s certainly plenty to feel positive about. As we emerge from lockdown number three, the onset of spring is more welcome than ever. The evenings are beginning to get lighter, the first delicate blooms are starting to push through and now we have some positive hope that our wonderful world of weddings will begin to resume too. Whether you’re in the ‘postponed from 2020’ camp, the ‘original 2021’ crew or your status is ‘newly engaged’, the wedding planning will be gathering momentum in the coming months – and you’ve come to the right place for help and inspiration! This issue is crammed with tips and advice on everything from the wedding catering, intimate and eco-friendly weddings, lovely local venues, real weddings, fabulous photo shoots and more to showcase what’s on offer in the region. And if you’re looking to nail your wedding day bridal style, we’ve got you covered from pages 72 to 92 with everything from hair and beauty, to fashion and accessories. Packed with all the regular features, honeymoons, inspiration and more, we’re excited and hope you are too!
Looking for a wow-factor wedding gown? From page 79 we showcase a selection of beauties with pretty details.

NEW VENUE ALERT
With growing demand for intimate and original destination weddings, step up Enchanted Manor on the Isle of Wight. Due to be launched in April this year, the new venue is devoted to all things love related – not only romantic, but spiritual and self-love too. Managing director Peta Panos explains, “We bought Enchanted Manor in October 2020 and will be specialising in weddings and retreats on an exclusive-use basis as well as couple mini-breaks and me-time staycations.” Perfect for a one-of-a-kind wedding with up to 16 people, it offers flexibility and privacy for couples looking to celebrate in their own special way. “Without the costs involved with larger affairs, couples are able to spend more on their guests’ experience, adding gifts, excursions and special touches to make the event more memorable,” adds Peta. She and her sister have set up the business after both spending more than 33 years working in the tourism industry. Although her sister won’t be involved in the day-to-day running, her daughter Montana will be working alongside her. Visit www.enchantedmanor.co.uk. PETA’S TOP TIP With two-night weddings what tends to happen is when the group gets together they have a big party that evening so everyone is tired and hung over for the wedding the next day. I’d suggest either making it a three-night affair with the wedding on the last day so there’s plenty of downtime for fun and planned activities beforehand or if you’re limited to two nights, marry first and relax afterwards.
CONGRATULATIONS!
Dorset-based Fab Frocks has won a UK first by scooping a prestigious trusted service award. The mother-of-the-bride and -groom boutique in Westbourne, Bournemouth is the only shop of its kind to win the Feefo Platinum Trusted Service Award, an independent seal of excellence that recognises businesses for delivering exceptional service. Based purely on real customer experience and genuine reviews, it’s a highly valued badge of approval. Owner Steve Taylor says, “We’re very excited to be the only mother-of-the-bride boutique in the UK to receive this award, especially as it’s based on feedback from customers, who are the most important judges of all. It recognises how hard we work to deliver the best possible experience, even in a year as tough as 2020.” For further information about the award-winning boutique visit www.fabfrocks.co.uk

SAY ‘I DO’ AT THE TANK MUSEUM
Couples can now walk down the aisle at The Tank Museum, one of Dorset’s newest and most unusual wedding venues. Events manager Rosanna Dean says, “It might seem like a quirky place to get married, but we know there are lots of people looking for something a little different on their wedding day. “Our unique surroundings have already attracted couples with a special connection to The Tank Museum, who want to celebrate their marriage with us. Some have links to the military, a keen interest in the subject or ties to the local area. The variety of settings and the expertise we have at the museum means we can offer a completely tailored experience.” Whether you want an intimate 1940s-style affair or a classic contemporary white wedding with up to 1,000 guests, the venue’s experienced events team can help you create your day your way. You can even tie the knot in front of your favourite tank! Guests can explore the museum and, enjoy a sumptuous wedding breakfast courtesy of the in-house catering team and pose among the tanks for standout photos to treasure forever. What’s more, all profits from weddings go to support The Tank Museum charity, so your big day will be helping to preserve history for generations to come. To find out more visit www.tankmuseum.org

IN TO THE BLUE The latest fragrances from iconic brand Tiffany & Co., Tiffany & Love Eau de Toilette for Him and Tiffany & Love Eau de Parfum for Her, were created as a tribute to modern love and the pairing is perfect for nearlyweds tying the knot. The male scent is a citrusy, aromatic fragrance with a wood-infused base. It begins with oils of ginger, mandarin and cardamon, at the heart is a juniper-cypress blend and it boasts base notes of sandalwood, vetiver and the common ingredient of the duo blue sequoia – uniting these two fragrances together! The female fragrance is modern with a feminine, floral, woody scent. It opens with top notes of blue basil – a botanical ingredient developed exclusively for Tiffany – then follows with a hearty sweet floral bouquet of neroli, underlined with a woody blend of blue sequoia, vetiver and cedarwood at the base. Priced at £54(50ml) or £75(90ml) for Him, and £75(50ml) or £110(90ml) for Her. hen Melissa applied for a job at Go Ape, little did she know the man interviewing her for the post would turn out to be her future husband. “The first nine months of our relationship were strictly professional and it wasn’t until September of the same year that we started dating. We’ll both admit now though, that we were instantly attracted to each other,” reveals Melissa. Four years later Dave popped the question at their former home in Bracknell. “It was a very understated yet romantic affair and a complete surprise, so much so, I’d just walked in the door from work
and was still wearing my uniform,” Melissa recalls. They were due to get married last June but put it off until April, 2021 due to the pandemic. However, by the beginning of October last year, with the situation still not improving, they decided to get married in just over over two weeks. “We were absolutely thrilled that we were able to use all the suppliers we’d originally planned and they were unbelievably accommodating given the short notice!” adds Melissa. They tied the knot at picturesque Gorwell Farm, close to the Dorset coast on 17th October, 2020. Read on for Melissa’s account of their celebration... 31

Seasonal SWITCH Kelly and Andrew’s wedding was a triumph of love over lockdown Images courtesy of Jessica Hayman Photography

REAL WEDDINGS
K
elly and Andrew planned to have a spring wedding but when COVID struck they switched it to the autumn instead. They tweaked their original dusky pink colour scheme by including warm burgundy shades instead of white, slashed the guest list by 100 to just 15 family and friends and enjoyed an intimate wedding full of magical moments.
POPPING THE QUESTION The couple first met in 2009 at Newcastle University, where they were both members of the athletics and cross country club, but didn’t get together until three years later when Kelly returned from a year in France. Andrew popped the question in December 2018 while they were out walking in the New Forest. “He got down on one knee in a beautiful woodland spot and it was such a complete surprise, it took me a couple of minutes to actually say ’yes’,” Kelly recalls.
THE TIME AND PLACE They tied the knot on 16th October, 2020 at St Mathew’s Church in the village of Otterbourne. Kelly and her dad arrived in a head-turning Rolls-Royce limousine. “It looked absolutely amazing when it pulled up to take us to the church and attracted a lot of attention on the drive to the reception venue too,” she remembers. “Arriving at the church and finally holding Andrew’s hand was one of the happiest moments of the day. I felt so emotional throughout the whole ceremony having our family there to watch us say our vows. Also our friends who weren’t able to join us on the day were all outside the church to see us, which really meant a lot to us both. We felt like royalty with all the photos being taken!”
“Seeing Kelly for the first time as she reached the end of the aisle and saying our vows was magical.” – Andrew LOOKING THE PART In keeping with their classic wedding theme Kelly wore Journey by Blue by Enzoani, a romantic figure-hugging lace dress with a heart-shape neckline and long lace train. “It was the second one I tried on and I fell in love with it straight away!” Her seamstress embellished the short veil with a small heart and both their names embroidered in blue thread as her something blue. To complete the look she had a pearl hairpiece to coordinate with the pearl combs she bought as gifts for her bridesmaids. The groom and groomsmen looked dapper in navy blue tails and pinstripe trousers with ties and pocket squares to match the bridesmaids’ dusky pink, halterneck dresses. Their flowergirl Annie wore a pretty white dress with the addition of a pink sash to complement the others. As the wedding was moved from spring to autumn, instead of having peonies the bouquets were a mix of dahlias, roses, gypsophila and astilbe. Kelly had a shower bouquet while the bridesmaids carried hand-tied posies. “I also asked our seamstress to make everyone face masks to go with their outfits, which I placed in small confetti bags for them to take to the church.”
SETTING THE SCENE When it came to choosing the perfect place for the post-vows celebration one of the top priorities was finding somewhere with accommodation. “Most of our close family and friends live in the Yorkshire region, where we’re both from originally, so it was important to have a venue where our guests could stay,” explains Kelly. When they first visited New Place Hotel in Southampton, they were immediately blown away by the gorgeous manor house and grounds. “It ticked all our boxes and we couldn’t have imagined anywhere better for our wedding day,” says Kelly. When they later had to downsize their wedding plans, the team at New Place stepped in to help, offering them a smaller, more intimate room in the manor house, complete with an impressive fireplace as the stunning centrepiece. 37

THE PERSONAL TOUCH As the wedding evolved, the table plan had to be revised too. The final layout included three round tables for their guests with Kelly, Andrew and their parents on the top table. “We had satin dusky pink runners scattered with burgundy table confetti and small jars of flowers to match our colour scheme on mirror plates as centrepieces,” explains Kelly. They gave small jars of sweets as favours, labelled with their nickname ’Kandy’ and Kelly made a special activity bag for their flowergirl. They opted for canapés on arrival and a traditional wedding breakfast and after having to cut back on numbers, decided to upgrade parts of the menu to provide some extra special culinary treats. Their florist added to the atmosphere by creating a beautiful floral garland for the fireplace and as a fun personal touch, she filled their running trainers with flowers to match the theme. The cake complemented the look too, with a dusky pink middle tier and lace-effect overlay in keeping with Kelly’s dress. “We had traditional fruitcake on the bottom, salted caramel sponge in the middle and the top tier was lemon,” adds Kelly. As a nod to Andrew’s job working for Ordnance Survey, maps also featured in the decorative details. “We created personalised place names with everyone’s address and a map of where they live,” explains Kelly. “As we’re both keen runners and met through running, we wanted to bring this into our wedding day too, so Andrew created maps for the table names showing where we’d achieved our most memorable personal bests and the route. As we originally planned to have 10 tables, we displayed the spare ones on the windowsill, which proved to be a great talking point on the day with everyone trying to guess whose personal best was whose and what distance was being run!”
“One of the most heart-warming moments was at the end of the meal seeing our families chatting together and getting on so well.” – Andrew TIME TO CELEBRATE After the wedding breakfast, although they weren’t able to have the wedding band and big party they’d hoped for, they were able to relax and enjoy special time together with their nearest and dearest. “We created a playlist of all our favourite songs which we had on in the background and, as it was such a small intimate occasion, we spent the evening chatting, laughing and having fun with all our guests! It honestly didn’t feel like we were missing out and we had a great time spending it with our family and close friends,” says Kelly. “The whole day was just incredibly happy and I couldn’t get over the overwhelming feeling of joy. Being able to go ahead with our wedding surrounded by our closest family and friends, who will always be a part of our lives, was amazing. Andrew’s mum described the day as ‘two families coming together as one’, which summed it up perfectly.” 39
“We were very lucky to have amazing support from the venues and all our suppliers who were so flexible and accommodating, it made everything so much easier!” – Kelly

They lived in the same village, went to school together and always had a bit of a thing for each other but didn’t officially start dating until 2010. “We’re both big kids at heart and that’s what we love about each other,” says Jess. “We don’t take life too seriously and like to have fun creating memories.” Despite often being asked when they were going to get married, they took their time and always knew it would happen one day. “We didn’t want to put ourselves under pressure though as we had other things to focus on, like buying our first house,” explains Jess. When Ryan did propose, it came as a complete surprise. He planned it in secret and popped the question while they were on a cruise in August 2018. “He chose the ring himself and hid it in a sock in his luggage. He’d also arranged a photographer without me knowing and we have some amazing shots capturing the moment. It was everything I could have wanted,” Jess adds. They originally planned to get married on 24th October last year but brought it forward to 19th September due to the pandemic. Jess explains, “With things continually changing, I was worried that heading into winter we might have to change our plans at the last minute. So on a whim one night, Ryan suggested we do it as soon as possible. So with only three weeks to go, we managed to get it all done and it was the best decision we could have made!” Read on for her account of their big day...
The weather was perfect on the day and it was warm enough for us to have the ceremony outside, which was lucky as on our original wedding date there was a big storm!
When we walked into the Balmer Lawn Hotel we knew it was the one. Super chilled and relaxed with a touch of sophistication, the team was incredibly helpful and nothing was too much trouble!

REAL WEDDINGS
The lady in the shop asked me to try on a fit and flare dress that I didn’t really like but she persuaded me and I’m so glad she did as it turned out to be the one! It fitted like a glove, with lots of detail and sparkle and pulled me in in all the right places!
I had an array of greenery and burgundy flowers for my bouquet with simple bunches of gypsophila for the bridesmaids.
I didn’t like the idea of trying dresses on as I hate being the centre of attention but the staff at the bridal boutique were amazing and really put me at ease! Ryan wore a three-piece suit with a burgundy bow tie and had a different buttonhole to the rest of the groomsmen. He had four best men and they and both dads all wore matching suits.

Luckily we were only planning a small ceremony anyway so we didn’t have to make any adjustments! We did have to cancel the additional evening guests though but other than that, everything else went exactly as planned!
We gave our guests tubes of hot chocolate and bottle openers as favours
The tables were decorated with ivy, candles and burgundy flowers to complement our rustic theme. My bridesmaid made our semi-naked two-tier cake with strawberry and vanilla or chocolate and banana flavoured cupcakes too.
We had a comic pianist to entertain our guests and he was absolutely brilliant. The perfect combination of music and comedy, he made everyone cry with laughter! You would never have known we were in the middle of a pandemic which was a credit to the hotel and photographer for pulling out all the stops!
The flower wall and fairylights added an extra magical touch.

ooking for an alternative style for your wedding? This laid-back elopement shoot has plenty to inspire, combining a romantic mix of chilled boho vibes, retro touches and green credentials. Great for free-spirited couples and a funky festival feel, the natural beauty of the Purbecks in the Dorset Countryside provided the perfect setting. “The theme was inspired by LA folk bands of the 1970s and the aim was to show that sustainable weddings can be beautiful too,” says coordinator Zoe Harvey from Dorset-based Borrow the Moon. The Gabrielle dress from sustainable bridalwear brand Indie Bride London fitted the theme perfectly with ’70s-inspired sleeves and lace details. “We loved the idea of mixing it up and having a short dress for a more free-spirited, carefree look,” Zoe adds. The flowers by Dorset-based Maia Sellen Foral Designs combined bold jewel-like tones with key colour pops of coral and orange. The props were all vintage or handmade from reclaimed materials. “I was inspired by the bohemian aesthetic but in a more retro way,” explains Zoe. “Boho lounge areas are very on trend right now and are a great for photographs. We used vintage bamboo chairs with a Persian rug, sheepskins and floral arrangements in glass vases to add colour. We also had a handmade dip-dye macramé backdrop hanging from a tree as an extra cool feature.”

CATERING

WHAT’S
All the latest in wedding catering
W
ith intimate weddings likely to continue to find favour with couples eager to tie the knot in the year ahead, many are turning up the heat when it comes to the catering. Downsizing the guest list doesn’t have to mean compromising on quality or style though. In fact, with fewer mouths to feed, many foodie fans are splashing out on extras and looking to add more indulgence to the big-day menu. From coast to country, the region is blessed with a wealth of great produce and creative caterers on the doorstep ready to cook up a storm. “Wedding catering may be a little different for a while, but no less scrumptious,” says Sally Pickles of long-established Hampshire-based Vanilla Catering & Events. “Presentation styles and methods will have to change a little but believe me, it won’t detract from the perfect day!” Here she gives her take on the shape of things to come...
Plated canapés
Canapés are one of the highlights of the day for many guests and still can be! As well as showcasing your caterer’s flair, they provide a wonderful burst of flavours early on in the day. “They will now need to be portioned out and plated so each guest has their own individual serving to eat at their leisure,” explains Sally. “The plus side of this is everyone gets their fair share and no one has to miss out. On the downside, if you’re the person hovering at the kitchen door waiting to pounce as they come out, you’re out of luck!”
What’s mine is mine
We’re all taught to share as youngsters but now you don’t have to. You can be totally selfish, your plate is yours, so hands off! “That doesn’t mean you can’t have variety on your plate though,” assures Sally. “If you don’t want to opt for a formal sit-down meal, you can still have a plated buffet or barbecue; the key is to keep it simple so the food is fresh and hot. You could also have a boxed picnic which offers great versatility and choice and who doesn’t love a little box of goodies?”
Fine-dining upgrade
For those wanting to stick to a traditional plated meal, if you’ve had to cut down on guest numbers, why not upgrade to a fine-dining experience? Instead of a threecourse wedding breakfast you could add tempting extras to the menu. Sally suggests: A sorbet course Individual cheeseboards for each guest; served either English-style at the end of the meal or surprise everyone by having it the French way, before dessert. Petit fours always go down well, even if you’ve already had dessert. After all, there can never be too many sweet treats at a wedding Include a wine to complement each course and provide tasting notes for your guests to create an interactive experience. Ask your caterer to recommend the best wine and food pairings Visit www.vanillacatering.co.uk 61
Luxury caterer Peapod & Co. creates delectable delights for weddings of all sizes, from intimate gatherings to lavish affairs. Championing the best in local and seasonal ingredients their menus offer vibrant, colourful food covering everything from luxury canapés and bowl food to a three-course wedding breakfast with naughty midnight munchies. Owner and director Henrietta Russell says, “Weddings will be more intimate, but that’s not to say they won’t be lavish. Many couples will be wanting to go the extra mile to ensure their guests have an unforgettable day.” She predicts: While the future remains uncertain, there will be more last-minute weddings, with some couples booking with only a month’s notice. Increased focus on local and seasonal produce. Less sharing boards and drink stations such as large ice luges and make-your-own cocktail bars. Instead canapés can be served on individual trays or for more laid-back celebrations, canapé boxes and dinner deliveries are likely to be in demand. Al fresco summer weddings will be increasingly popular, especially while people are wanting to spend more time outside. Visit www.peapodandco.com
“More couples are looking at the cocktail-hour style canapé station as well as extending their celebrations to include intimate pre-wedding meals, so hedging towards American trends, which is exciting! Also, smaller numbers generally equals bigger budgets as people are keen to create an experience for all their guests to enjoy.” – Sally Elcoate of Hampshire-based Ginger Catering Company (www.gingercateringcompany.co.uk) 62
CATERING
Chin, chin
When it comes to big-day tipples, bubbly and weddings go hand and hand. The only problem can be which ones to choose. Cecile Bergart, wine tutor, champagne expert and owner of The Hampshire Wine School is here to help. She says, “People naturally turn to fizz as it adds a sense of occasion, an air of sophistication and overall excitement to any wedding. But, there are a few facts to note before toasting your forever after.” A statement bar is always a great crowd-pleaser and with increased focus on sustainability and keeping things local, regional tipples will continue to be in demand. Based in the heart of Dorset, the Cherry Bar is the latest addition to Cherry Picked Hampers, specialising in providing locally sourced food and drinks. As well as a lovingly restored vintage trailer bar, they also provide rustic wooden bars for marquee and indoor weddings. “For us, it’s all about supporting other local businesses and producers, such as kraft beer and cider producers, english wines and spirits and working together closely with other catering companies,” says co-owner Laurie Griffin. Visit www.cherrybar.co.uk
Deciding when and how to serve your fizz is crucial, as it will determine not only the type of bubbly you’ll need, but also the quantity. Finding your perfect bubbly is just like choosing your wedding dress; it takes a lot of trials! Taste as many different types as you can before the big day. (A champagne or a sparkling wine tasting at the Hampshire Wine School will help!) Remember that it’s perfectly fine to include several types of bubbly throughout the big day. Cava in the morning for your mimosa (the French equivalent to bucks fizz), prosecco for the welcome drinks in the early afternoon, champagne brut for the toast before the evening meal, champagne demi-sec with the cake, and some French crémant or a sparkling wine from South Africa at the bar. If you’re looking for something a bit decadent and extravagant to serve with the wedding breakfast, vintage and rosé champagnes are particularly well-suited to enjoy with food. Ultimately, it’s your taste that should prevail when selecting the drinks, so have fun finding the one! Visit www.hampshirewineschool.com 63

ecorative details make all the difference to the look and feel of your day. Local suppliers got together at The Mercure Bournemouth Queens Hotel to show how. Making the the most of the striking venue they created a coordinated theme full of colour and interest. Photographer Sadie Osborne explains,“We were looking to evoke a contemporary style interlaced with a modern original feel. Working with the interior design of the hotel, we wanted the shoot to reflect the glamorous vibe. The hotel has a warm and welcoming atmosphere including stunning spaces that offer a real sense of contemporary art.” “Shimmering shades of gold, russet and brown touched up with a teal eyeliner created a soft yet glam bridal look with a hint of vintage Hollywood elegance to go with the stunning eclectic interior.” – Caroline Swaffield, Amazing Face Bridal Hair & Makeup
“We wanted to create an enchanted woodland vibe with a subtle nod to Art Deco using an exciting colour palette inspired by the venue’s gorgeous feature wall, including gold, mustard and terracotta with blush and navy accents.” – stylist Sam Saunders, Linen & Lace

et within a three-acre walled garden just outside Wimborne Minster in Dorset, The Orangery Suite provided the perfect backdrop for this stylish shoot. The bride’s tea-length dress and make-up reflected the chic retro theme, while the 1920s-style Regent Landaulette car added an extra touch of Gatsby-esque glamour – great for making a grand entrance and standout photos! Adorned with vintage bone china and azure blue chiffon the tables helped to set the mood and statement ornamental topiary trees brought the outside in. Fresh, summery tones with bursts of yellow and turquoise ran throughout the flowers from the bouquet to the table centrepieces and the beautiful floral ring.

The elegant Majestic wedding dress from Nicola Anne Bridal’s Resplendent Collection was made from duchess satin with corded lace and creates a stunning shape for a vintage-style bride.
Pink, purple, white and yellow asters added a new colour dimension to the chair decorations and serviettes.
The ring of delicate lisianthus included cream, apricot and green flowers and looks stunning laid flat or as a hanging feature for added drama.
The circular table decorations took their lead from the bride’s bouquet with the addition of snowberry, as used in the bridegroom’s buttonhole.

Q&A Local experts tackle your wedding worries
SEASONAL SWAPS
We we’re hoping to get married last year but have since had to rethink and are not sure what time of year we’ll be getting married now. We wanted a winter wedding but, depending on restrictions, may switch seasons as we want to tie the knot as soon as possible. What would you suggest to help adapt my bridal look and stay excited for our big day to come? Melinda says: First of all stay positive! There are ways to make the day just as special and with a different season you may find new ways to add your personal stamp to the day. Depending on when you marry, for instance if you’re having more of a spring wedding instead of a winter one, you could add a hint of brighter colours into your overall theme. Your look can be adjusted by using a more dewy foundation and make-up to give a fresher looking, radiant glow. Opt for a slightly brighter blusher and soft glowing highlighter to accentuate your cheekbones. Perhaps try a slightly warmer eyeshadow palette (depending on your skin tone) and a brighter lipstick, maybe a
86
stronger pink or apricot for a splash of colour. You may also want to consider having a spray tan for a gentle all-over glow or try one of the body lotions that build up a gentle tan gradually. If you’re switching to a summer date then try some softer colours in your accessories and flowers. I’d recommend a less heavy foundation, but one that still gives you a flawless finish. Use warm shades and maybe some bronzer for a sun-kissed look and a highlighter or blusher with a sheen to give you a beautiful radiant finish. Don’t go overboard with the highlighter though, especially if it’s a hot day! Choose a lipstick to blend with your natural colouring, possibly a cool or warm nude or a pink or peach shade and a clear gloss on top for a cool summer vibe. Be prepared for warm weather with blotting papers to keep the dreaded shine at bay, extra hairspray in case of humidity to tame any stray hairs and spare deodorant. EXPERT ADVICE
LEADING LADIES
My mum’s getting worried as she’s put on a few pounds during lockdown and says she can’t buy her outfit for our summer wedding until she’s lost some weight. What do you advise? Debbie says: Yes she can. We have access to a very talented seamstress who can make any adjustments. There are very few outfits that can’t be altered and, as many designers aren’t producing as many collections this year, if you find something you love and it fits you now, I’d say get it! What if the wedding has to be cancelled and moved to a different season? Debbie says: A two-piece is a great choice for mums as it provides the added benefit of warmth when the weather’s chilly and looks great for the formal photos. Then there’s the second reveal, when the jacket’s removed to unveil a beautiful dress that can carry through to the day and evening celebration. We find that adding a lightweight chiffon shawl also gives the impression of a totally different outfit without the added cost. By far the most popular colour choices are navy and ivory or a neutral palette. These shades are never out of fashion and work well for all seasons, especially with a pop of colour for high summer. We’ve also found that for couples who’ve had to downsize their wedding party, mums are tending to go the extra mile with their outfits to make up for the loss in numbers. After all, the photos will be with you for a lifetime! Debbie Hill | Special occasionwear boutique owner | www.charismaoffawley.co.uk
GET GLOWING
My bridal skincare regime has derailed during lockdown and I’m struggling to get back on track. Can you help? Caroline says: Skincare can be easy and doesn’t have to be expensive either. I’m a firm believer in doing it for as little as possible and successfully too. Now, more than ever, it’s important to start looking after your complexion in time for your wedding to come, to make sure you’re flaunting a gorgeous glow. Here’s a few simple tips to help: ❤ Drink an extra two glasses of water on top of your daily quota. This will help flush out any skin-dulling toxins and keep you hydrated which is important for slowing the ageing process. ❤ Eat more fresh fruit and veg to enhance skin health; leafy greens, red beetroots and clementines are super for a radiant complexion. ❤ Get plenty of quality sleep as the body repairs itself by regenerating new cells while sleeping, enhancing your inner and outer natural glow. ❤ Exercise as much as possible to improve circulation and invigorate mind and body giving you a more relaxed air. What to look out for ❤ Facial oils; a one-stop solution to a multitude of problem as they nourish, hydrate, moisturise and some even cleanse too. ❤ Face masks; there are plenty to choose from for deep cleaning and drawing out toxins and impurities. ❤ Follow with a serum, my personal go-to product! They can target a whole host of problems and work fast giving you instant lift and radiance. Apply before moisturiser to actively reduce fine lines, tiredness or lacklustre skin. ❤ Mix moisturiser with a facial oil to get maximum benefit. ❤ Try to keep your mind as calm as possible. There’s nothing worse than stress to ravage your skin and dull your complexion. Caroline Swaffield | Bridal hair and make-up artist www.amazing-face.co.uk

We all know about the barrage of environmental abuse our facial skin battles on a daily basis, but what about our scalps? They too are faced with the impact of sweat, pollution, and various styling products. Centred creative director Kieran Tudor says, “Good scalp health is crucial for strong, healthy, beautiful hair, yet it’s often overlooked when it comes to hair care regimes.” A deeply nourishing blend of olive, argan and hemp oils, Centred En-Root Scalp Treatment replenishes moisture to dry brittle hair, while exfoliating the scalp and removing product build up and dead skin cells. What’s more, the blend of rosemary and peppermint essential oils stimulates blood flow to the hair follicles maximising hair growth potential. Priced at £36 from www.wearecentred.com

amed for her flawless skin, popular TV personality Jess Wright is a busy, gogetting woman. Whether she’s on a shoot, busy filming, hosting her podcast – Girls #NoFilter, planning next year’s wedding to William Lee-Kemp, or hard at work in her role as Crystal Clear’s first celebrity ambassador, her perfect skin is the envy of all. Keen to know her secret, CWM beauty editor Kelly Andrews sat down for a chat with the reality star to get the lowdown, just for you! Jess, thanks for making time in your hectic schedule to talk to us and huge congratulations on your forthcoming wedding. How do you imagine your big day? Thank you! I imagine it to be beautiful, full of love and hopefully classy. As long as I’m surrounded by my family and loved ones, that’s the most important thing. How did William propose? He did it on the balcony of our beautiful hotel room in the mountains in Courchevel. It was both spectacular and amazing. What’s your vision for your bridal beauty look? Good skin is the perfect base so I’ll be prepping with some fab Crystal Clear COMCIT facials in the run up to the big day for sure. Then I’ll want my make-up to be slightly natural, with that dewy glow and some wispy lashes.
Absolutely
FLAWLESS
Our beauty editor caught up with Jess Wright to discuss wedding plans and just how she achieves that perfect complexion

Do you have a picture of your dream dress in mind? I’ve tried on so many dresses, but I definitely have a vision. I think I’ve chosen the one. Completely understand you playing the cards close to your chest there! We look forward to the surprise. As the voice of experience, can you share with us your top wedding planning tips? I’d say, make sure you have a good wedding planner. Also, do the guest list, but don’t send the invitations out until later, as it’ll definitely alter as time goes on! So many couples have been forced to re-plan their weddings as a result of the pandemic. Have you encountered any such difficulties and do you have any advice for other couples facing the same challenges? We’ve considered moving the wedding, but
BEAUTY INTERVIEW
at the minute it’s a day-by-day update, so we’re going to make the final decision in the spring. If you’re not time restricted, I’d say move yours to 2022 if possible, so you can really enjoy the process rather than struggling through the pandemic. Leading a jam-packed celebrity lifestyle while planning a wedding must make you an extremely busy lady! How do you juggle it all while still looking fabulous and flawless? I love keeping busy, so I was really excited about planning a wedding on top of my already hectic lifestyle, but unfortunately
that hasn’t happened as the pandemic and various lockdowns have slowed me down. It has meant though that I’ve had plenty of time on my hands to plan the wedding! What are your make-up bag must haves? I love Chanel foundation for a quick matte bronze. Also, a good eyebrow pencil and a nourishing lip balm. I always keep the Crystal Clear Beach Glow Tanning Drops in my kit too. They’re amazing for adding a subtle glow to your skin and you can dial it up depending on the depth of colour you’re looking for. Tell us why you love Crystal Clear. I’m so excited to be chosen as the first ever ambassador for Crystal Clear Skincare. Their products are my holy grail and having tried so many different brands over the years, I just love the results you get with Crystal Clear, so it’s amazing to be working with the brand. The range is extensive with something to suit all skin types and concerns. The Ionic Sonic2 Microdermabrasion Kit is my ultimate secret to Insta-ready, super-cleansed skin. I’m also a big fan of the salon treatments, especially the COMCIT facial. It really is the most fantastic treatment for softer, firmer and hydrated skin.
Which is your favourite product from the range? I’d have to say The Lifting Wand, one of the brand’s beauty tools. It comes with its pharma-grade product, which is packed with hyaluronic acid. You use it for 60 seconds every day and it gives you deep hydration, depuffs eyes, plumps skin and lifts it. It’s really easy to use and fits into your daily routine. For a quick skin fix, I’d also highly recommend the 10 Minute Glow Mask, which literally does what it says on the tin and gives you glowing skin in just 10 minutes. It’s incredibly satisfying to peel off as well! What’s your number one beauty tip for brides? Focus on your skin. Glowing skin is the best thing on your wedding day in terms of beauty, so do whatever you need to make it feel its best. Finally, what’s next for you? Hopefully my wedding! Also, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, the musical I’m in. This is all dependant on the pandemic though. Sending my love to everyone at this time. Finishing Touch Flawless Dermaplane Glo, £19.99 Available at Argos, ASDA, Boots, Tesco and Wilko Dermaplaning as a salon treatment has been around for a while, and quite frankly the very thought of it has always terrified me. So, I wasn’t too sure what to expect of this tool. I did my research on the benefits, genned up on this super-useful tutorial and I was ready to go. Wow, I don’t know what I was so worried about. It was easy to do and took no more than five to 10 minutes. Probably 10 for me as I got a bit addicted and couldn’t stop – I don’t recommend that though. It’s an incredibly satisfying process seeing all of that peach fuzz and dead skin disappear. I couldn’t believe how smooth my skin felt afterwards. Leave your skin to rest for around eight hours afterwards before you apply any skin products or make-up as it’s quite an intense exfoliation process, then repeat every two to four weeks. I can’t wait to see how regular use improves my skin further. I’m definitely sold on dermaplaning!
https://youtu.be/S2b5jX4yNyA
Kevyn Aucoin Kaleidochrome All-Over Highlight Palette, £39 www.lookfantastic.com This multi-tasking palette offers four shades of highlight suitable whatever the look you’re going for. I particularly loved the darker rose Space Party, which I used on my cheeks over my blusher for a radiant glow and Super Cosmic, which I added to the arch of my eyebrows and very top of my cheekbones. It really brought a multi-dimensional look to my make-up that can be tailored for day or night.
Eve Lom Radiance Transforming Mask, £65 www.spacenk.com I was surprised to find a balm texture when I first removed the lid, so was interested to see how this would go. Using the supplied spatula to remove the required amount of mask from the tub, I opted for generous dollop and began to massage it into my face as instructed. Its thick formula felt incredibly luxurious and I could already tell it was going to provide a pampering experience. I was particularly delighted by the advice to leave for a minimum of 30 minutes, which gave me an excuse to relax for a decent amount of time – none of this 10 minutes rubbish! When it was time to remove with warm water, I was delighted to find my skin looking renewed, beautifully supple and glowing.
PUT A SPRING IN YOUR STEP CWM’s beauty editor puts this season’s best buys to the test creating a head-to-toe makeover session you’ll love
Sculpted by Aimee Connolly Lip Duo, £18 www.sculptedbyaimee.com I’m a huge advocate for lip liners and their myriad benefits, but I do struggle to know which shade goes with which lipstick, find the two become separated and will admit to resenting buying both in the first place. So, these Lip Duos are a blessing! Not only are they perfectly colour matched offering you two products for the average price of one, but if your make-up bag is already packed, like mine, they offer a smart solution. I tried Mauve Match, which is a versatile neutral shade, ideal for everyday wear.
No Secrets One Body Jelly, £49 www.nosecretsbeauty.com This jellied body oil smells absolutely incredible with No Secrets’ signature blend of essential oils – bergamot, juniper, petitgrain, eucalyptus and lavender. Less messy than a traditional body oil, you just need to massage a little in at a time for smooth and beautifully soft skin. Plus, the amazing fragrance lasts. Perfect for a pamper. 92
Margaret Dabbs Cracked Heel Treatment, £18 www.margaretdabbs.co.uk Let me start by confessing that my heels are horrendous, always cracked and dry and nothing I try makes a difference. Until now that is. This product was well and truly put through its paces by my horrible hooves and the results were instant. After just one application the sandpaper effect was gone and with continued use it really is a miracle worker. It’s my new beauty essential, and I can’t wait to get the flip flops on!

SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW
www.hanalaurie.co.uk
I want to not only look great in my wedding dress, but feel good too! I’d therefore like to find something with green credentials but I’m not sure where to start. Can you help? Erica says: Finding a genuinely eco-friendly wedding dress can seem like a tricky business. If your heart’s set on a new dress, then try to find one made in the UK with fabrics carrying the Global Organic Textile Standard or Made in Green by OEKOTEX label. However, if you’re looking for a pre-loved option, there are eco-friendly dry cleaning companies that specialise in wedding dresses, which you will probably have to have done, especially if it’s been in storage. Original vintage dresses require specialist treatment however and personally, I only use eco-friendly methods. If the vintage look isn’t for you though, a contemporary dress made by reworking old fabrics and gowns is an ethical way of having something unique to you without blowing your budget. We try to be as kind to the planet as possible in our everyday lives and would like to reflect this throughout our wedding. What would you suggest to make a difference? Peta says: Here are just a few ideas to help lower the environmental impact of your big day: ❤ Think about the fabrics you choose as they can be very resource-draining and try to use organic or natural fibres and materials where possible, such as hemp, cotton and linen. ❤ Instead of buying one-off items, reuse decorations you already have or shop for pre-loved pieces. ❤ Choose your venue carefully and look for one with an eco-friendly ethos and practices. Things to consider include solar power, composting, do they grow their own vegetables or source farm-to-table, locally produced food? ❤ When it comes to transport for your guests, organise group pick-up and drop-off points to cut down on car use. ❤ Some couples opt to collect money for their favourite charity rather than receive wedding presents. However, if you do have a gift list, try to select things that can be used and treasured for years to come. ❤ If you’re having confetti, make sure it’s biodegradable but avoid rice as it can be harmful to birds. Instead of scattering fresh petals down the aisle use dried ones recycled by the bridal party from cut flowers in the leadup to the wedding. ❤ Look for a florist who uses locally produced blooms so they don’t need to be flown in. Consider potted plants or herbs as centrepieces which can then be planted after the big day. ❤ Hand-crafted mementos can be more eco-friendly and make great gifts for your guests too. Peta Panos | Managing director www.enchantedmanor.co.uk
THE PERSONAL TOUCH I want my flowergirl and pageboy outfits to be sustainable but how can I achieve this? Dawn says: When thinking about sustainable fashion, it’s important to not only consider what the fabric is made from, but also where it was manufactured and how far it’s been transported. Weddings are all about memories, past and present, so why not honour loved ones and family traditions with your flowergirl or pageboy outfits? You may not want to wear your grandmother’s wedding dress yourself, but it could be reinvented as a gorgeous little girl’s dress. A grandad’s much-loved suit can be transformed to create a cute pageboy outfit too, so that on your big day you can feel close and connected to those that matter most. It’s also a great way of incorporating your something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue! Dawn Clarke | Designer www.dawnclarkedesigns.co.uk
EXPERT ADVICE
WITH THIS RING
How do we check for sustainable, eco-friendly options when it comes to choosing our rings and wedding jewellery? Charlotte says: If the perfect jewellery for you is one that has impeccable ethical credentials then it will take some research. Doing the right thing and making a difference is all about having the knowledge to get behind the headlines of what is actually happening on the ground, as it can be easy for companies to ’green-wash’ their products without being able to substantiate their claims. It’s still a work in progress, however there is a huge groundswell of support from consumers, as well as campaigners within the global jewellery industry, for full transparency and sustainability. To help you choose, here are some key questions to consider: Where is your jewellery made? Being handmade locally or in Britain is one of the best ways of ensuring quality with proper skills training, environment, fair conditions and pay for workers. Beware of the ’designed in the UK’ label and check the small print to see where the actual manufacture and/or stone setting is done as it may be an unregulated factory in the Far East, using cheap materials and labour. Where are the diamonds sourced? Established jewellers are more likely to know their gem and diamond dealers personally and have a long and trusted relationship in order to make sure their diamonds are conflict-free; not ’blood diamonds’ used to buy arms or fund civil wars. Are coloured gemstones traceable? Gems such as sapphires, emeralds and rubies can be bought from ethical dealers who can offer fully traceable precious stones.
THE THREE Rs
We want our wedding to be on-trend and super stylish, is this possible and still keep the environment in mind? Anouska says: At Raggy&Boo we love to think up ways to be extra green and eco-friendly, it’s part of our ethos so we like to follow the three R rules; Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. ❤ Shop local The internet and fantastic resources such as Your Hampshire & Dorset Wedding make it easy to find suppliers close to your venue, which not only supports the local community, but also means less travel miles, reduces the carbon footprint of your wedding and will save you money! Try and pick businesses in tune with your green code with products that haven’t travelled the globe. ❤ Reuse and recycle The key here is to provide recycling bins at your wedding venue so the morning after isn’t quite as painful. Compost any organic material and donate or reuse any perishable leftovers, such as flowers, plants, food or drink. ❤ Best foot forward We know this isn’t always possible, but if you can walk from the ceremony to the reception it’s not only eco-friendly, but also works as a great little buffer between venues, plus you will really earn that welcoming glass of fizz. Why not turn it into a procession, with you and your guests following behind a roaming band? Imagine the great photos! ❤ Confetti A little time consuming but super cute, get a paper cutter and use it to punch out confetti from leaves.
What is the environmental impact of gold, silver and platinum? Mining can take its toll on the environment and the availability of fully Fairtrade and Fairmined gold is still limited. Fairtrade gold has to be certified or you can have freshly smelted and processed recycled gold and silver in your rings. Can I repurpose and remodel existing heritage jewellery? This is one of the best ways to be truly sustainable and have high quality jewellery to last for generations to come. The stones and metal from inherited jewellery or sentimental pieces can often be redesigned and remodelled to create something new and unique to treasure for ever – the ultimate in enduring love for you and our precious environment. Charlotte Cornelius | Jewellery designer www.charlottecornelius.co.uk
❤ Reduce single-use plastic The events industry has had a pretty bad reputation in the past for the amount of single-use plastic it consumes. You can reduce this with a few simple steps for your eco wedding. • Instead of favours which may include plastic or be discarded, why not donate to charity instead and leave a little paper note at each guests place to let them know. Alternatively wildflower seed bombs in eco packaging are a great idea and help bees too. • Use real plates and cutlery, which look very chic anyway. If you’re going for more of a festival vibe with food trucks for the catering then check the suppliers use recyclable crockery and cutlery. • Instead of bottled water, set up a water station with refillable jugs and glasses for your guests Anouska Parsons | Event manager and founder www.raggyandboo.com 95

Retreat to ty the ci
Hannah Faulder visits The Marylebone, and finds out that it offers the best of both worlds for a minimoon in the capital
A
s the country prepared for Lockdown Part II, my husband and I managed to sneak in a last-minute escape to the city to enjoy a much-needed retreat at The Marylebone. Nestled in the hotel’s supertrendy namesake neighbourhood, between the Georgian Welbeck Street and the partpedestrianised Marylebone Lane, you’re just a short walk from London’s most famous Monopoly locations, from Bond Street to Mayfair. Stepping out for a stroll from the hotel, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re in a bustling Cotswolds village – that is until you happen upon Oxford Street. But this is what makes it such a wonderful destination for a minimoon or post-wedding break: it’s close to the action, but it provides a tranquil retreat from it too.
STAY Cross the threshold, and you’ll find a neutral palette offsets the pops of colour and modern paintings on the walls perfectly. Look carefully, and you’ll notice a subtle design scheme reflecting the four seasons as you walk through the hotel. Following an extensive refurbishment, the striking decor extends throughout, and no luxurious touch has been spared. Classic timber flooring, marble-topped counters and wood panelling blend seamlessly with curated artwork and designer furniture. There’s a
whole host of event spaces too for weddings and celebrations with real character; I particularly loved the verdant Palm Room and the sociable al fresco terraces. Our corner suite was chic and fresh, its spacious circular layout houses a small kitchen area, complete with Nespresso machine, a sumptuous living area, dining table and huge marshmallowy bed. “We could live here,” my husband and I kept saying to each other. We sat, champagne in hand, and gazed out of the window over the pretty streets of Marylebone with the city lights glittering in the distance; it had a distinct Mary Poppins vibe. The striking marble bathroom boasted a huge bath, walk-in shower and trendy Malin+Goetz toiletries. The welcome pack with COVIDsafe goodies like hand sanitiser was gratefully received, and the hotel clearly states all the measures it has taken to look after guests’ wellbeing. Looking to really treat yourself and your loved one? The super-stylish Marylebone Suite has a showstopping cedar-clad terrace, with a retractable roof, awesome vistas and an outdoor TV and fireplace – it’s certainly memorable! While you’re here, why not treat yourself to some R&R in the Third Space Health Club, with its gym and 18m pool.
EAT We dragged ourselves away from the champagne and fluffy robes long enough to enjoy the hotel’s restaurant, 108 Brasserie. This is not a typical hotel restaurant, more a fabulous eatery for locals and tourists alike
that just happens to be attached. Set on the cobbles of Marylebone Lane, the outdoor seating with patio heaters makes it look so inviting. Inside, you’ll find traditional style with a modern edge, from rich upholstery and parquet flooring to antique mirrors and decadent florals. The meals on the globally inspired menu feature fresh ingredients with a focus on seasonality. Yummy burrata, salads and decadent desserts were the order of the day, making the restaurant a mustvisit for guests.
EXPLORE The next morning, we treated ourselves to a full English breakfast (one vegetarian) in bed, with hearty portions served under silver cloches, before heading out on foot to explore the neighbourhood. This soon turned into a wonderful day strolling through the nearby Royal Parks, spotting parrots and pelicans before ducking into a café for a takeaway coffee as we meandered up The Mall to take in Buckingham Palace. Next up was a stroll through Hyde Park and into the shopping mecca that is Oxford Street before heading back for a quiet drink at the hotel’s bar – perfection! If you don’t get the best weather, though, the capital’s attractions are within easy reach on public transport – or you could just hunker down in your room and luxuriate in your newly wedded bliss.
