ersonally I love this time of year, although the weather’s still nippy, there’s the promise of sunny days ahead and the spring flowers are coming into bloom. I don’t know about you, but from the moment the nights start getting lighter, I immediately feel more energised. The days seem longer and it’s great to leave home and return from work in the daylight. With the clocks going forward at the end of March, I’m preparing to get to grips with all those niggling tasks at home that I’ve mothballed over the winter. So, if like me, you’ve been a bit sluggish with the to-do list over the winter, now is the time to get cracking. Whether you’re in the ‘postponed from 2020’ camp, the ‘original 2021’ crew or your status is ‘newly engaged’, the wedding planning will be gathering momentum in the coming months – and you’ve come to the right place for help and inspiration! I was 18 and he was 24 so there was always the joke between their friends about me being the little sister! Mike asked my brother if he minded us getting to know each other, he said okay and we hit it off straight away. We just seemed to click and make each other laugh, it felt really easy and we knew quite quickly that we were meant for each other,” reveals Jess. Mike popped the question in August 2019 on a trip to the New Forest where they had their first date. She said ‘yes’ and they tied the knot on 28th August 2021 at the Christchurch Harbour Hotel by the water’s edge, just minutes from the beach.“We both have an amazing relationship with my brother and he was Mike’s best man at our wedding,” adds Jess. Lady in Red Maddie and James’ sequel wedding was a chilled, two-part affair

addie and James first met when she moved to London for her first job as a junior doctor. “A mutual friend cunningly arranged for us to attend the same party knowing we were both newly single and had a shared love of art, nature and general goofiness,” Maddie recalls. The matchmaking worked and they got together as a couple. However, when the time came for James to pop the question, things didn’t quite go to plan. Three days into a two-week road trip in California he intended to surprise Maddie with a romantic proposal during a 5am hike in Joshua Tree National Park. The idea was to trek to the top of the highest rock and persuade her to pose for a photo looking out over the edge, to then find him down on one knee when she turned round. He hadn’t counted on her being frozen to the spot with crippling vertigo though! “Poor James had to get back up to retrieve me. Luckily photo attempt two was more successful and we enjoyed a special moment together on top of the rock as the sun came up. I later had an image of the rock engraved on to a silver signet ring for James as a memento,” adds Maddie.

REAL WEDDINGS

MARRY ON Due to Covid, tying the knot proved to quite a rocky road. However, despite restrictions, they stuck to their date and got married at Old Marylebone Town Hall on 3rd December 2020. As only eight of their immediate family members could be there, they decided to have a belated first-anniversary party the following year on 11th December 2021, with all their family and friends and their original suppliers.

LOOKING THE PART As the official micro wedding had already taken place, both Maddie and James felt able to buck tradition a little and have fun with both their colour scheme and outfits. Maddie enlisted the help of her school friend and dressmaker Isabella Stewart to create and design her dream gown. She wanted something equal parts fun and sexy and the more classical neckline contrasted beautifully with the layered tulle sleeves and skirt. To complete the look she wore a bespoke matching red plume flower crown, gold star earrings and high, lace-up Castaner wedge heels. James recycled his original wedding suit, but dressed things up with one of his many eccentric ties for him and each of his ushers along with waistcoats in a variety of colours. The flower crown and buttonholes were made by florist Jessie Cooper in keeping with their earthy winter colour scheme, with lots of blood red and burnt amber plumes. “The bridesmaids or ‘wifesmaids’ as we called them, were given relatively free rein to choose their own dresses, as we wanted everyone to feel their very best on the day. They were given a seasonal vampy brief including colours such as navy, plum, mustard, bottle green, burnt orange, either knee-length or below, and the matching white gypsophila flower crowns bought all the outfits together beautifully,” adds Maddie.

HOME, SWEET HOME Maddie was born and raised in Dorset and had her heart set on celebrating with her loved ones in her home village of Trent where she had lived since she was five. “Prior to Covid, our initial plan was to marry in Trent Church,” she explains. “However, with the legal wedding formalities already finalised the year before, our anniversary party became all about the reception and celebration.” They decided to use the village hall for the welcome drinks, string quartet, canapés and speeches and have a boho-style tipi setup for the party afterwards on the village green nearby. “The joy of the reception being at the village hall was that we could walk there from my parents’ house,” explains Maddie. “Not only did this relieve pressure on the day, but we were also able to get some really gorgeous sunset photos of us walking along the country lanes with our family and friends.” 37

REAL WEDDINGS SETTING THE SCENE They opted for three large tipis with rows of joined-up trestle tables for the ‘anniversary breakfast’ followedby dancing afterwards. “We wanted the whole event to feel relaxed, like attending an informal dinner party with 130 friends! The long tables worked fantastically so we felt right in the middle of everything, with all our guests around us.” As great food lovers and long-standing vegetarians they chose a fully vegetarian menu provided by The Plume of Feathers in Sherborne.“We both love their food and wanted to ensure that our ‘anniversary breakfast’ was a memorable experience for everyone,” explains Maddie. Nick from the Plume helped to design a mouth-watering menu starting with sharing platters, followed by traditional Italian dish ricotta gnudi and a sharing dessert of classic tiramisu as well as warm panetonne. “The sharing theme worked so well, not only in reducing unnecessary food waste, but also helping guests to chat and get to know each other,” adds Maddie. In keeping with the boho vibe, they also had tall brightly coloured festival flags outside the tipis. “They really were gorgeous and some of our favourite photos included the tipi festoon and fairylights illuminating the flags, giving it that real Glastonbury feel,” recalls Maddie.

THE PERSONAL TOUCHES The decorative details echoed the season with small red poinsettia flowers for the centrepieces, which complemented the gold star table names perfectly. Maddie’s dad made rustic candlesticks out of gnarly old logs from the family log pile and foliage from their garden was used to trim the tipis. Her mum took on the mega task of creating the place names, which were all handwritten on spray-painted gold stars attached to lengths of burnt amber velvet to wrap around the napkins. “Some of our guests loved them so much they took them home as Christmas tree decorations!” adds Maddie. As James and his dad Giles love to surf and sail, and Maddie’s father works as a cruise ship captain, they had a nautical theme for the tables and named them after big waves including ‘Jaws’ and ‘Shipstern Bluff’. James’ cousin Joanna Lillie painted their amazing table plan featuring waves, surfers, boats and eight of their immediate family members. The cake was another wow-factor feature, designed in a retro ’70s style in bright pink, red and orange with a range of flavours including Maddie’s favourite, banana and peanut butter, and James’ top pick, lemon and elderflower.

TIME TO CELEBRATE As an extra special detail, they had a sparkler walkway outside the village hall on the way to the tipis. “We did a few test runs prior to the big day, and would recommend buying extra long, long-burn sparklers otherwise your photographer won’t have time to get many snaps!” advises Maddie. She and James also surprised their guests with a choreographed American jive routine to Elvis Presley’s All Shook Up and later in the evening live indie rock band 8-Ball got everyone up on the dancefloor. “We also had fun animal masks and limbo dancing, which got everyone involved,” adds Maddie. “It was honestly the most special feeling, particularly after the past two years, to be surrounded by all our family and friends wishing us well and rooting for us to have the best evening!”

hen Clare said ‘yes’ to James, little did she know then how her wedding day would turn out. She and James grew up together and their mums were best friends from school, so they’d always been part of each other’s lives. James popped the question during a weekend away in London at The Shard’s Shangri-La Hotel. “The proposal was really intimate and a complete surprise,” reveals Clare. They originally planned to have their dream wedding in Cyprus but after having to postpone it twice due to Covid, they eventually decided to cancel it altogether. “We felt it was too much to ask our family and friends to move their holidays for a third time. It was heart-breaking, especially as I work in the NHS and had been working flat out throughout the pandemic,” explains Claire.

TWICE AS NICE Meanwhile Lisa and James’ brother Matty, who got engaged on a surprise weekend away in April 2019, had already booked The Old Thorns Hotel in Liphook for their big day. So, when Lisa suggested teaming up and having a double wedding there, at first Clare thought she was crazy. “I couldn’t see how it would work without it feeling like we were imposing on their day. However, after Lisa explained that we could have two separate ceremonies followed by one massive reception I came around to her way of thinking,” recalls Clare. “At that point we’d already bought things like the bridesmaids’ dresses and luckily our colour schemes were extremely similar and worked well together. We made some adjustments to Lisa’s original plans and organised the decor together for both the ceremony and reception. It was great fun and because we’re close it was easier for us to say if we didn’t like something or wanted to change anything.”

KEEP CALM AND MARRY ON Lisa and Matty fell in love with The Old Thorns Hotel, from the moment they first saw it. “The Gatsby Room really sold it to us but initially we booked the smaller room as it was more suitable for the number of guests we were inviting,” explains Lisa. When the pandemic struck, they had to postpone the wedding from July 2020 to the following year. “After moving the date, I started to lose my motivation. The planning had already been done and I wasn’t excited anymore,” Lisa recalls. “I only thought of the idea of making it a double wedding when Clare and James cancelled theirs. Most of our guests were the same, so I started planning it in my head and when I suggested it, although they laughed at first, they soon realised I was serious!” Things started to fall into place – the venue was happy to host a double wedding, the larger Gatsby Room was available and so were the registrars. “It then got really exciting again,” remembers Lisa. “I wanted Clare to feel like it was her wedding too, not just an extension of mine, so I booked appointments with all my suppliers to go with her to change or add a few things. Our colour schemes were only slightly different shades of pink and we both had the same kind of

style and taste.” Then the unthinkable happened – they had to move the wedding date again, but this time the registrars couldn’t make it. “We were fortunate enough to be able to keep the ceremony room at Old Thorns, so we got married on 10th July as planned, but with just the four of us. We had such a lovely day; the hotel was wonderful and very accommodating.” Afterwards, it was full steam ahead for their all-the-bells-and-whistles wedding the following month. They booked a celebrant for 28th August and exchanged vows in front of their guests (who weren’t even aware that they’d already got married) and celebrated with a party for everyone to remember. “We had a double wedding because we really wanted all of us to finally have the day we’d been waiting for and for everyone to be excited. I just couldn’t have asked for a better wedding and what’s more, we now we have two anniversaries to celebrate!” Lisa adds. 43

After all the postponements I felt so relieved it was finally happening and excited that after so long all our friends and family could gather together again.

“My bridesmaids wore dusky pink multiway dresses and we made a special trip to Scotland to buy the flowergirl dress for our daughter Sophia.” – Clare

The tableplan was displayed in photo frames on a decorated ladder. “I had a three-tier cake and Clare had a Krispy Kreme doughnut tower topped with a cutting cake.” – Lisa

“It was wonderful spending time with Lisa and Matty on such an important day, watching friends and family enjoying every minute and finally, after a rollercoaster experience, marrying my best friend!” – Clare

edding coordinator Tasha Gilchrist couldn’t resist spreading the joy after seeing a picture of the colourful new maypole for the South Coast Glamping site at Teddy’s Farm in Lymington. A bright farm-fest photo shoot immediately sprung to mind and the wheels were put in motion. “Seeing the bell tents, open-sided marquee and the flags flying in the wind from the maypole, it just screamed festival, so that’s exactly what we did!” says Tasha. n the hunt for the perfect setting for an intimate wedding, how about a pop-up dome? The latest exciting innovation to hit the local wedding scene, Lucy Fosh of newly launched Dome Sweet Dome Dorset put together this styled shoot to show off the beauty of the domes as alternative wedding spaces. “I wanted to not only showcase how our fabulous domes can be set up for a cosy wedding reception, but also collaborate with some of our talented local suppliers.” A beautiful Dorset thatched cottage garden provided the perfect spot to conjure up some micro magic. Drawing inspiration from nature, autumn foliage, berries, pumpkins and seasonal colours set the tone. “As we offer a bespoke styling service as well, I wanted to show this aspect of the business to its full potential. I created an autumnal design concept using local suppliers and focusing on sustainable décor,” explains Lucy. The tables were all handmade in the area from wooden pallets and the furniture and accessories were mostly second hand and upcycled. Lucy made a giant circular wreath to hang above the table, using foraged foliage, pampas grass and dried cut flowers bought locally. They also styled a beautiful bridal suite with a big, comfy round bed, furniture and accessories. With an electric simulated wood fire heater to keep you toasty in the winter, what could be more romantic than sleeping under the stars?

My daughter is getting married in early May and the only rule is that there are no rules! She’s happy for me to wear what I like but I want something special. What would you suggest that’s suitable not only for her relaxed boho theme but the spring weather too? Debbie says: In springtime, with all the array of emerging colours, it’s an ideal opportunity to add an extra splash with floral prints, either bold or something more subtle. The boho theme is great for more relaxed weddings and can look just as stunning as more formal attire. Stand-alone dresses are the way to go, with or without sleeves, so long as it’s soft and flowing – no structured shift dress for this theme I’m afraid. How daring you want to go depends wholly on your individual style and personality. As this is a more informal type of wedding, to make yourself stand out from other guests as mother-of-the-bride, why not finish your outfit with an amazing hat? Should the weather be a little chilly and you feel the need to add layers for warmth, make sure that they are soft and flowing too, no stiff jackets! Don’t forget no one sees what you have on underneath, so if you do feel the cold wear some thermal underwear and if the weather warms up during the day, it can easily be removed and no one will know any different. My other half has set his heart on a tweed three-piece suit for our rustic, country wedding in May but I’m worried it might get too hot and uncomfortable. How practical is tweed for the warmer months? Natalie says: The unpredictability of the Great British weather may make you think that it’s time to compromise on the vision of a three-piece tweed suit. It may be tempting to abandon the idea for a lighter weight fabric, because you feel it will perform better and be more comfortable in springtime, especially as the weather forecasts start to become more optimistic in May. However, many people mistake the nature of tweed as a thick, weighty winter fabric. The popular myth is that it’s only really good for layering an outfit, adding warmth and weight. omething old, meets something new in this inspiring photo shoot. Set against the backdrop of Hampshire’s historic Stansted House, local suppliers created a showcase of seasonal wedding newness to reflect the beauty of an al fresco spring wedding. Photographer and organiser Leah explains, “The idea came from my love of outdoor weddings, especially in the spring. It’s such a wonderful season, but is often overlooked in this country. The unpredictable spring showers can make planning difficult, but I wanted to change the narrative and prove to couples that, no matter the weather, an al fresco wedding in springtime can be just as beautiful as in the summer.” True to the Great British weather, it poured with rain on the day, but between the showers pockets of sunshine burst through creating a magical warm glow. “I originally wanted to use the fields in front of Stansted House, but when the rain started we made a snap decision to adapt to the change in weather by setting up on the porch. With the Edwardian house, grand steps and Italian marble columns, it was an unexpected setting but possibly the best newly discovered place for an outdoor dining experience. As we set the table, we were all in awe of the magical space that had been chosen for us by the rain. We sat beneath so much beauty and history feeling so incredibly lucky to have created such a moment,” adds Leah.
