t the time of writing this the sun is shining, we can now eat a meal with our loved ones – outside of course – and I have my hair appointment booked for next week. I can’t wait, and neither can my unruly locks! Here at CWM HQ we are thrilled to see a route back to wedding normality on the horizon at last. NEW VENUE ALERT

If you’re looking to celebrate the great outdoors on your big day, check out this exciting new venue. The team behind the recently relaunched Silent Woman Inn in the heart of Wareham Forest, has set up a new wedding and events space, showcasing two of Coastal Tents’ giant tipis. Operations director Rob Barr, explains, “With COVID-19 impacting so many aspects of our lives, we have worked hard to provide a secure wedding and events venue along with a flexible system if couples do need to change dates.” Bookings for 2021 and 2022 are available now and the venue will be holding an open day on June 6th along with local wedding and events suppliers. Hampshire-based Makeovers by Melinda has reached a major milestone. Owner Melinda Hollis is celebrating 21 years of the business and to mark the coming of age she’s introducing a raft of new initiatives including a fresh new outlook on wellbeing. She explains, “I’m offering a more holistic wedding service which will not only include hair and make-up and select beauty treatments as usual, but will also be focusing on the bride’s wellbeing, and their partner too if they want. I’ve been working with and using essential oils and supplements for six years now, firstly to help keep me healthy and I have been introducing them to my clients who love them too.” During the pre-wedding consultation and trials Melinda likes to get to know her brides from the outside in. “We often discuss health issues or challenges that they have, it can be physical, mental or emotional and I’m truly grateful I have some natural solutions to help them,” she adds. “There are many emotions that affect newlyweds-tobe as they plan their wedding and never more so than during this past year.” The business is in the process of getting a fresh new look with a rebranding and updates to the website to reflect the changes. Melinda is also running a 10-day Health and Wellbeing Experience via a pop-up Facebook group in May and will be sending out samples of essential oils to help with sleep, stress and emotional worries as well as teaching how to use them. New Forest wedding venue the Balmer Lawn Hotel in Brockenhurst has opened its doors to outside diners. The hotel’s new Lodge Kitchen and Bar has a cool beach bar theme complete with surfboards and other fun props. The outside Savernake Terrace has also been expanded and landscaped for an additional al fresco dining experience. Following the official opening general manager Michael Clitheroe said, “It has been a long time coming and opening the doors was an exciting moment for the whole team. my and Martin met at work and fell for each other’s charms. In 2018, Martin whisked Amy away to Paris as a surprise trip to celebrate her 25th birthday. There, in a beautiful spot in front of the Louvre with a perfect view of the Eiffel Tower, he dropped to one knee (in a puddle) and asked Amy to marry him. “He ruined his trousers, but it was all worth it,” she laughs. After viewing a great many potential wedding venues, the pair discovered the beautiful Beaulieu Inn in the picturesque New Forest. Amy took her mum, maid-of-honour and one of her bridesmaids along to check it out and fell in love. She explains, “Once Martin saw it, we knew it was the one. It’s surrounded by fields and has a lovely garden. It felt so light and airy – just what we were looking for.” Then, the pandemic stepped in and scuppered their plans. Amy reveals, “It made the process so much harder than anticipated. We had to move our April 2020 wedding to November, downsizing the guestlist to 30, then to 15, before moving the whole day forward to October!” Nevertheless, the couple’s perseverance paid off and they celebrated their nuptials on 10th October, 2020 #lovesnotcancelled. two-week road trip around France in June 2019 turned into a happy ever after for Erin and Pete. During a stopover in Bergerac on the second night, while on a romantic pre-dinner walk down to the Dordogne River as the sun was setting, Pete popped the question. The proposal was a complete surprise to Erin who first met Pete in 2017 while they were both working for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance. “I had no idea,” she exclaims. “It turned out to be a very happy evening and an amazing holiday, taking in Toulon, Cannes, Nice and the Alps.”

THE TIME AND THE PLACE They tied the knot on Saturday 10th October, 2020 at Blacknest Golf and Country Club in Hampshire. “It was the first venue we visited that we both absolutely loved. There was a beautiful tipi outside that caught our eye and had it not been for COVID we would have used it for our reception,” says Erin. However, despite having to move their wedding from March to October due to the pandemic, they were still able to have the al fresco service they’d dreamed of. “The venue has a beautiful outdoor area and we were so lucky that, even with the change of date, we were still able to get married outside,” says Erin. “The ceremony was at midday and we were really fortunate with the weather; it was just perfect. My sister Rosie, who was my maid of honour, set up a Zoom call for the ceremony, so my grandparents and other relatives who were shielding or unable to come could still watch us.”

LOOKING THE PART Erin bought her Wtoo by Watters wedding dress and her veil from Hannah Elizabeth Bridal in Botley. “The ladies in there are just amazing, it was a great experience from start to finish and I felt like a princess in my gown all day,” she recalls. Pete looked smart in a tailored three-piece suit from Moss Bros. and the groomsmen hired navy blue suits to match. “Pete also wore his great grandfather’s pocket watch and chain which was a great honour for him,” adds Erin. To complement the colour scheme, the bridesmaids had midi-length navy Ted Baker dresses.

SETTING THE SCENE Shades of blue and bursts of bright sunflowers were key features of their day. After numbers had to be reduced to just 15 people they decided on an intimate reception, all sat together around a single table. “It was decorated with the most beautiful garland made by our amazing florist Karen at Village Blooms. She was fantastic and created exactly what we wanted, only even better than we could ever have imagined,” raves Erin. “We chose sunflowers because when we were working together we had a sunflower growing competition which meant Pete and I got to know each other while watering them outside each day, so they’re really special to us.”

THE PERSONAL TOUCHES The agate place names were chosen to reflect the blue colour scheme and also doubled up as favours for guests to take home with them as a keepsake of their day. Black lanterns with candles were arranged at one end of the table and in the reception by the welcome sign while giant LOVE letters created the perfect backdrop for the meal, speeches and first dance. 37 

REAL WEDDINGS The food was another highlight with plenty of choice for everyone. “As it was a small party, our guests were able to pick their own three-course meal from across all the menus, which was amazing,” explains Erin. They chose a cake from Marks and Spencer, which they decorated with fruit. “In the evening we also served cake baked by Pete’s mum Viv, which was delicious,” adds Erin.

TIME TO CELEBRATE After tying the knot, they were able to enjoy a lovely long drinks reception before the wedding breakfast at 4pm. They included Corona beers in a nod to the current times, as well as their favourite tipple Aperol Spritz and bubbly. “We were all able to mingle and catch up with each other, which was wonderful after not being together for so long,” recalls Erin. They created a playlist on Spotify which played throughout the wedding breakfast followed by more favourites during the evening. “The lights went out and the glow from the LOVE sign lit up the room perfectly. We cut our cake, had our first dance and afterwards it was amazing to have everyone up dancing all together! Before the 10pm curfew kicked in, we all grabbed our last drinks to finish in our hotel rooms,” adds Erin. “We both had the best day ever and felt so grateful to have our closest friends and family with us on our special day. After everything we’d all been through to get to the wedding it just felt so worth it to say that we were husband and wife.”

Even though it was only a small wedding I still wore a white dress and Oltjon looked handsome in his blue suit.

We chose the Winchester Hotel and Spa for the wedding because it’s so beautiful inside and out. We were planning to have 50 or more people at the wedding but due to COVID restrictions there were just 14 us, including the photographer.

ame House, a stunning wedding venue in deepest Dorset, provided the ideal backdrop for this stunning shoot. Inspired by the idea of a botanical wedding in an Italian olive grove, bright yellow lemons, fragrant herbs and living trees, added to the magic. Shoot coordinator Debbie Ison of natural venue styling specialists Whitestem explains, “The glass-domed conservatory was such a natural setting for our trees and absolutely perfect for creating a leafy botanical styled wedding.” To complement the theme, the place names were made of real lemons and bay leaves with eco-friendly personalised, re-useable bamboo straws as favours. Large loose-headed olive trees created the illusion of a leafy avenue arching over the wedding breakfast table. A magnificent real star jasmine arch created a leafy arbour over the drinks table, decorated with posies of scented herbs in mini glass bottles and candles in clear glass and blue and white ceramic candlesticks. As a contrast and a nod to the more formal style of the grand house, large topiary bay trees with spiral stems were placed behind the sofa in the drawing room.

The bridal look featured a beautiful white lace La Sposa Pronovias wedding dress, make-up created to give a warm sun-kissed glow and a bouquet made of sprays of olive leaves.

Local experts on latest looks for the season ahead

We had to cancel our summer wedding last year due to the pandemic and I haven’t been keeping up with all the emerging trends. What’s the latest on bridal hair and make-up to get me up to speed? Emma says: By next year hopefully we might be seeing some signs of normality returning to weddings but in the short term, summer ’21 wedding trends may be a bit different to what you might expect. Let’s start with the colour schemes as these influence make-up trends. The prediction is that primary hues such as red, yellow and cobalt blue, also fushia pink and teal blue will be in favour. These bold palettes throw a fresh light not only on the wedding décor, flowers and bridesmaid dresses, but can also work with bridal make-up too. ❤ The block lip Give your bridal make-up a contemporary look by going for a bold colour to match your palette; pillarbox red, fuschia pink and flame orange are perfect for this. To keep it on point go for a lip stain for a semi-matte effect which in turn intensifies the colour on camera. Lip stains have the added bonus of being kiss-proof and mask-proof. There are so many hydrating options now they don’t have to be drying for the lips either. ❤ Bold eyes and fluffy lashes Since the need to wear face masks was introduced, women have started boldly emphasising their eyes again, which has also caught on for bridal make-up. No pain, no gain is old school; enjoying what your body can do and having fun while you exercise is absolutely in! ❤ Be kind to yourself Trying to get fit and plan a wedding are demanding tasks under normal circumstances! So if you didn’t manage to hit your goal for today, it’s ok. Plan your day tomorrow, allow time to reach whatever goal you have in mind and get back to it. Clare and Matt say: ❤ Lighting is often overlooked but can be one of the most cost-effective ways to transform a venue. You can create a lasting magical impression indoors and out with everything from twinkling fairylights to a starlit LED dancefloor to add to the party atmosphere. Get really creative with decorative and different colour bulbs and with the summer months ahead, take the party outside with festoon lighting and exterior uplighting. ❤ Don’t forget details like the seating to complement the look and

We’ve had to postpone our big day twice now and haven’t been keeping up with the current trends as we didn’t want to get too excited! Now we have a date for this summer (woo-hoo) so now I need to get back on track with what’s happening in the world of weddings and bridal beauty. Melinda say: Micro and intimate weddings look set to remain popular for a while yet. I can even see first anniversary parties catching on giving brides the opportunity to wear their wedding dress again and show it off to all their friends and family. In general I think the overall feel will be more natural

Chiavari chairs are a popular option, they provide an elegant alternative to chair covers and can be dressed to match your theme. ❤ Drapery is great for a multitude of tasks; it can enhance a host of different spaces, create a focal point, frame the top table or even disguise any unwanted features. We love flowers but have no idea about all the different varieties. What will look great and be in season for our summer wedding? Karen says: There’s an amazing array to choose from and one of my go-to summer picks is the delphinium; a wonderful tall flower available in shades of blue, purple, pink and white. One of the few naturally blue flowers, it’s perfect for large statement arrangements, great to fill space if your venue has a high ceiling or a large blank backdrop. Extremely versatile, they can be used not only to create contemporary designs, but also a wild country look, mix with whimsical flowers such as nigella, scabiosa and Ammi majus. A true wow-factor bloom, they can be added to hand-tied bouquets to add height and texture and look divine in a shower bouquet. There’s also an abundance of colour to celebrate the season, beautiful pink, purple, white and of course yellow. Summer arrangements using all these can be very uplifting, especially if your venue is a little dark or the décor is quite neutral. Your wedding is about you though, so don’t feel pressured into using an array of colours if it’s just ‘not you’. If a timeless classic look is more to your taste then go for white, lime green and a mix of different shades of greenery, or add a hint of colour, like the blue delphinium! We’re getting married in August and are hoping the weather will be gloriously sunny for the photos. I want to look my best but I’m worried as I’ve been neglecting my usual beauty regime during lockdown. What can I do to make sure my bridal makeover is on point? Caroline says: Good skin is the essence of great make-up and it needs to be in tip-top condition to get the best results. Here are a few pointers to help and remember, it’s never too late to start looking after your complexion . ❤ The most important parts of any skincare routine are exfoliation and moisturising. Used regularly these two things will make a difference to everything, from absorption of your chosen products to the texture, tone and overall radiance of your skin. (Try Pixie Glow Tonic for great results!) ❤ Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells, makes pores look smaller and thetexture of your skin feel smoother, taking it from dull to bright in seconds! ❤ Moisturiser boosts the oil and water levels to prevent flaky, dry, dull patches and provides protection from the elements, it can also help regulate different skin types. ❤ Choose a daytime cream with sunscreen but not a really high factor one or your face may look paler than you’d want in the photographs. (I love Estée Lauder Wake Up Balm.) ❤ Remember to take an emergency repair kit with you on the day including blotting paper, a big-day essential to keep the dreaded shine at bay. Take some bronzer as well to minimise any shine and for topups, pack a lipstick with a matte texture to give staying power and waterproof eyeliner.
