Durlston Castle near Swanage, Dorset,

Durlston Castle can provide a range of rooms in which to set your wedding ceremony and your reception. The glass-sided Belvedere room situated on top of the Castle has stunning views of Old Harry Rocks, the Isle of Wight and the English Channel is perfect for a Ceremony, followed by drinks reception or for a small exclusive wedding breakfast. The stunning Gallery with its wall of glass doors is situated on the sunny south-facing side of the Castle lends itself to ceremonies and receptions.

Shop early

Hampshire occasion wear boutique Charisma is advising mothers-of-the-bride and -groom to shop early for their special outfits. Owner Debbie Hill explains, “This year is likely to be an incredibly busy one with all the weddings either cancelled or re-scheduled from 2020. Several of our designers have informed us that they will only be offering one collection this year for mother-of-the-bride and -groom outfits with a longer completion date. With this in mind I would encourage all mums to start their search early!” Even if the wedding date has to be moved again, she advises against waiting until nearer the time. “On the whole, the weights of the fabrics don’t change greatly for each season and if you find something that fits with the wedding theme and colour scheme I’d definitely get it now.” Visit www.charismaoffawley.co.uk

YOUR ESSENTIALS

LUXURY ON THE MOVE

If you’re looking for something different to the norm for your wedding reception, check out The Hamper, a Hampshire-based contemporary concept bringing the venue to a location of your choice. Billed as the UK’s first recycled container venue, it’s been designed as a luxury and versatile alternative to the wedding marquee. With a white dome roof and 25ft-high fully retractable windows it not only delivers the wow factor, but also allows the wedding party to enjoy the outdoor setting to the full. Delivered and installed hassle-free, it can be personalised and is designed to withstand the unpredictable British weather. The inside space is accented by string lighting, with a copper-wrapped bar, green-plant walls, a forest chandelier and hand-crafted scaffold-board tables, decorated to complement your big-day theme. “Our aim at The Hamper is to create a space of contemporary elegance, making your day beautiful and one-of-a-kind,” says director Ben Lyons. HAMPSHIRE BUSINESS LIGHTS UP A TV-FIRST

Winchester-based Twilight Trees made a stellar appearance in E4’s Made In Chelsea show as it aired its first-ever wedding on TV. Stars of the reality series Ollie Locke and his fiancé Gareth finally tied the knot after months of delays, just hours before the country went into lockdown for the second time. Held at The Natural History Museum in London, it was the venue’s first ever gay wedding and only the second civil ceremony to be held at the prestigious venue. Twilight Trees was given the task of creating a ‘room within a room’ for the event which took place in the stunning Hintze Hall with just 13 guests. The family-run artificial tree-hire company provided eight of its Grande White Blossom Trees to add extra sparkle to the iconic setting. Founder and creative director Susie Reid Thomas said, “Ollie and Gareth’s wedding not only gave us great exposure but a reminder of our true essence as a business. The excitement and buzz of the event itself and then being featured on E4 has given us a huge morale boost and a renewed hunger to make next year the very best yet. It has been the perfect way to end 2020 and we are grateful to Ollie for choosing to promote a local business.” Newlywed Ollie commented, “Twilight Trees has an extraordinary ability to create magic in any space and really did make our wedding spectacular.” For further details of the business visit www.twilight-trees.com 9

THE FINISHING TOUCH

The right accessories can make the world of difference and special occasion wear specialists No.6 Boutique in Dorchester has some new must-see lines in stock, including a classic jewellery collection. “The first thing my customers ask when they’ve chosen their outfit is what jewellery to wear. So it’s the perfect opportunity to be able to offer advice and jewellery to complement their outfit,” says owner Sandra Swain. She also offers a selection of faux fur bridal and occasion wear stoles, capes and shoulder wraps to not only keep the chills at bay, but add a touch of glamour too. “Made locally by a family-run business using quality fabrics this beautiful collection feels like pure luxury,” adds Sandra. “My hope is that from spring we can begin to relax and feel confident in moving forward with wedding plans and once again mums can enjoy their special time choosing their outfit for their daughter or son’s wedding.” Visit www.boutiqueatno6.co.uk

There’ll always be cake

Whatever the size of your wedding there’s something to suit all when it comes to the cake and Hampshirebased Cocoa & Whey Cakes caters for everything from sweet to savoury showstoppers. For the year ahead owner Penelope Hurst predicts single-tier wedding cakes with matching boxed mini versions, macarons and cupcakes will be popular, especially while restrictions are in place. She says, “Single-tier cakes can still be beautiful and impressive and couples can have great fun choosing bespoke boxed favour designs echoing different colours and sugar decorations from the main design.” Other key trends to look out for include edible and pressed flower decorations, coloured ganache cakes, continued love for buttercream, fondant designs in darker shades with contrasting pastel flowers as well as gold edging and details. “Vegan cakes are increasingly popular too with many couples also choosing savoury mini cakes and cupcakes to go with their main centrepiece, often decorated with fresh and edible herbs,” adds Penelope. Check out www.cocoaandwhey.co.uk for more of her amazing creations.

SHARE THE JOY

www.dukephotography.co.uk

Make your wedding magical at the beautiful Great Barn, Titchfield and make sure no one misses out on the magic. The historic Hampshire venue has introduced a live streaming service so couples can share their big day with family and friends from near and far. Built between 1408 and 1411, the Great Barn is one of the South Coast’s most historic venues, reputedly visited by Shakespeare and also Henry V on his way to the battle of Agincourt. With oak beams and impressive architecture, it’s not only heritage that’s at the heart of the venue though, the live streaming service adds an extra something new to its attractions. With three different packages available, each tailored to suit you, streaming is via a single fixed camera, two or more fixed cameras or by a cameraman, depending on the package you choose. A week prior to the ceremony, a private link is sent for sharing with family and friends who can then tune in on the day and watch the magic unfold live online. You’ll also be able to get an HD recording after the wedding so you can relive the moments time and time again. To find out more about weddings at the Great Barn visit www.greatbarnweddings.co.uk

FROM HELPING HAND TO BIG CHIEF

After cutting her teeth helping out at Chair Covers of Hampshire as a teenager, Emma Dzenis ended up taking over the company. The seeds were sown in the early days when the business was owned by a friend of her mum’s and her love for the wedding industry has grown ever since. She’s seen the business transform from a small unit to larger premises with more items for hire, diversifying from just chair covers and sashes to a whole range of decorative items and props for the big day. After finishing college she took on other fulltime work but her heart was still in weddings. She dreamed of running the company from the age of 18 when it was up for sale but she wasn’t in a position to act on it. “I’ve had the idea in my head ever since and at 30 years old it finally became a reality!” With Emma at the helm, the company now offers backdrops, chair hire, centrepieces, aisle carpets and much more. She also plans to add new products and will be keeping her eye firmly fixed on the latest industry trends. For further details visit www.chaircoversofhampshire.co.uk

hris’ sense of humour and outgoing personality lit the spark for Katie when she started chatting to him online. “He made me feel completely at ease,” she recalls. Chris adds, “I fell for Katie’s beautiful personality and the fact that she never takes life too seriously.” After getting together as a couple, Chris popped the question on Christmas day at Katie’s parents’ home. They tied the knot at the parish church of St Peter-in-the-Wood in Appleshaw where Katie went to school followed by a reception at The Hampshire Golf Club on 27th July, 2019. When it came to finding the one, Katie first spotted her Victoria Kay 1555 dress at The Hampshire Golf Club wedding fayre and made an appointment with Test Valley Bridal Services to try it on. When she arrived at owner Patricia’s boutique in Andover, not only did she find her dream dress there, but her bridesmaids and mum did too. Katie explains, “During all the fittings a friendship developed with Patricia and we decided to invite her to join the bridal party as my matron-of-honour. She was amazing and really stepped up to the mark. She also gave us her dressing-the-bridal-party service as a wedding gift. She and her hubby arrived in the morning with breakfast for us all, the dresses were perfect and she made sure I was looking my best.” Read on for more of Katie’s account of their big day...

Simple PLEASURES Katie and Ed enjoyed an extended celebration for their laid-back rustic wedding Images courtesy of Rachel Elizabeth Photography

K

atie and Ed met at work but nothing happened between them until sometime later, even though they worked on the same floor. “Ed runs the IT department and I’m a nurse and even though Ed claims he hadn’t noticed me until about a year after I started there, I was instantly attracted to him,” says Katie. “It helps that he’s the tall, dark, handsome type and is always smiling, which lights up his whole face. Ed was won over by my big eyes and magnetic personality apparently,” she laughs.

POPPING THE QUESTION Ed proposed while they were on holiday at the Les Arcs ski resort in France. “I was miserable because I couldn’t ski as I was pregnant with our daughter so I ended up being the chalet maid! I was thinking about getting a flight home until Ed asked me to stay,” recalls Katie. Instead of skiing, Ed arranged for them to go up the Aiguille Rouge Mountain. “The weather was beautiful and clear but it was -16˚C. We took in the view and just as we were about to get the cable car back down Ed pulled a ring box out of his pocket. He said he couldn’t get down on one knee as he had two pairs of trousers on and he didn’t want them to split. It was a lovely surprise and needless to say I didn’t mind playing chalet maid for a few more days staring at my new bling! The timing was significant as we were 13 weeks pregnant with our first baby and it was important to me that we all shared the same name.”

THE TIME AND PLACE They set the wedding date for 14th September, 2019 and Kingston Country Courtyard was the first and only venue they visited. It was love at first sight as the wedding barn, countryside setting and accommodation ticked all their boxes. “It’s surrounded by beautiful scenery, including a wonderful view of Corfe Castle,” explains Katie. “We wanted a venue which could accommodate us and a large number of our friends and family the night before and after the wedding. Kingston Country Courtyard has lots of rooms perfect for this and the barn provided a very special setting for our ceremony and reception.”

LOOKING THE PART Katie wore a beautiful Stella York off-the-shoulder fishtail gown. “I’d never considered having this type of dress as I felt it would be too clingy but I was really surprised when I tried it on as it really suited my figure. It had a beautiful lace overlay so I kept my accessories very simple with a gypsophila flower crown, pearl earrings, a tiffany bean necklace and my mum’s veil, which was very special. I did have to have the dress adjusted slightly as we found out I was pregnant with our second baby 14 weeks before the big day!” reveals Katie.

THE PERSONAL TOUCHES A string quartet played during the ceremony and afterwards while everyone enjoyed drinks in the grounds before heading inside the barn for the reception. The seating plan was themed around their shared love of Queen the band. They used different vinyl record covers of their hits for the table centrepieces with mini versions on the actual table plan to help guests find their place. The flowers were kept simple in keeping with the rustic barn setting. “We had one colour, ivory and mostly gypsophila for the bridal party bouquets, crowns for myself and my flowergirls and in jars for the pew ends during the ceremony which were then used alongside tall iron stands to decorate the tables for our pie and mash wedding breakfast,” says Katie. They also had a large window display of cascading ivory chrysanthemums, roses and natural foliage including eucalyptus and dill and three large illuminated artificial trees in each corner of the barn. In a nod to Ed’s love of cheese they had a whole stack of different varieties including blue, Cheddar and brie instead of cake. “It was decorated with figs and grapes and was served as part of our evening food with a variety of breads and crudités. We also ‘cut the cheese’ just like you would a traditional wedding cake,” adds Katie. 37 

J

enny met James at a bar in Southampton while she was working at the city’s general hospital and he was training at the nearby Warsash Maritime Academy. They were both on a night out with friends and Jenny caught his eye from across the dancefloor. Ed recalls, “I was thinking how to get her attention when luckily the DJ stepped in and saved the day by playing the dance classic Reach For The Stars by pop group S Club 7. With the beat racing through me and a repertoire of dance moves in full flow, I made my move.” Jenny continues, “I had a great night and James was a real gentleman helping me find my housemate who’d gone missing. We exchanged numbers and went on a date a few weeks later and the rest, as they say, is history.” James adds, “Over the following

days, months and years my love for Jenny kept growing ever stronger and from a very early stage I realised I’d found someone I wanted to spend the rest of my life with.” He proposed while they were camping in France and had been carrying the ring around in his pocket waiting for the perfect moment. Sarah says, “I’d been hinting for a while but it came as a huge surprise when it happened. James made us a gorgeous picnic outside our tent one evening and half way through he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. He’d designed the ring himself and I absolutely loved it and didn’t hesitate to say yes.” They tied the knot at Froyle Park in Alton, Hampshire on November 16th, 2019. Read on for Jenny’s account of their big day... 43 

“We loved that there’s was room for more than half of our wedding guests to stay overnight so we didn’t have to worry about taxis and transport home and could relax and enjoy a really good party.” Froyle Park itself is beautiful, the gardens are well maintained and there’s a variety of places to mingle and have photos taken.

My bridesmaids and I had pearl pendant necklaces from David Reale Jewellers in Blandford where my engagement ring, which James designed, and my wedding band also came from.

I fell in love with my Victoria Jane ivory wedding dress even though it had a lot more detail and beading than I thought I’d go for. It was too big for me but Ula Litwin, a Hampshire-based seamstress, did a fantastic job altering it so it fitted perfectly. 44

My friend Rosie is an amazing baker and she made our cake for us. The brief was fun, colourful with a nursing and nautical theme and my word, she nailed it! It didn’t only look amazing it tasted delicious as well. Local florist Judith Searles did the flowers, including arrangements for the mantelpieces, our jam-jar table centrepieces, posies for the ceremony chairs at the end of each row, the bouquets and buttonholes. She was wonderful and we absolutely loved her work. We painted a big mirror and decorated it with nautical rope to display our table plan. Unfortunately it got smashed on the way in and our venue kindly found a replacement and I was none the wiser. We haven’t experienced any bad luck yet, but it’s a good job we’re not superstitious!

We had a guest book for our family and friends and the messages they wrote were hilarious to look back on after the wedding. Our friend Lucille did a drawing of our venue for the invitations and designed a personalised logo incorporating an anchor with a nautical rope in the shape of a heart and our initials which appeared very faintly throughout the stationery.

I roped all my family and friends into collecting jam jars for our centrepieces and with the help of my bridesmaids we decorated them with twine, nautical knots, anchors or hearts.

Our favours were personal to us. James made nautical knot key rings for every guest and in a nod to my job they also had a gin shot in a syringe with blackcurrant squash for the children. 45 

The tables were named after places that were significant to us as a couple including our first holiday destination, our favourite beach and where James proposed.

The beer pong table, which we organised ourselves, was a hit all night and certainly added to the party vibe.

We’d seen the band performing their own music a few times in Southampton. They were great and kept the dancefloor busy during the evening.

esert tones with subtle hints of copper and gold provide the warm palette for this styled shoot in the grounds of Leweston, Sherborne. A newcomer to the Dorset wedding scene, it’s a magical venue with a wealth of wonderful spaces. Inspired by the emerging trends of bold blooms, everlasting flowers and statement styling, bridal hair and make-up specialist Caroline Swaffield and florist Jessie Stones used the beautiful setting to bring their vision to life.“The choice of venue was fundamental in the evolution of the shoot,” explains Caroline. With a picturesque chapel and sprawling grounds, the Belvedere outdoor wedding space provided a breathtaking backdrop. Even owner Keith’s dog Garry was there to make a special appearance. “Set on the edge of the grounds, found only by a long evergreen lined pathway, the trees give way to this unforgettable ceremony setting. With vast views of the rolling Dorset countryside it provided a sweet spot for golden-hour shots as the sun was setting,” adds Caroline.

PHOTO SHOOT

Bold blooms and colonial leaves formed a striking combination of strong femininity and contemporary vibes.

With the beautiful backdrop of the Belvedere along with some stunning fresh seasonal flowers, the cake was kept softly simple with some gently hand-piped detail on the bottom tier.

The lush almost tropical sunset, bursting with copper, gold and orange tones, was reflected in the hair and make-up to insure warmth and softness creating a glorious autumnal natural glow.

We’re hoping to get married this summer and my mum is stressing about what to wear. She has no idea where to start when it comes to choosing an outfit for such a special occasion, can you help? Steve says: We’ve certainly missed the busy flow of mothers-of-the-bride and -groom in the boutique, but that makes us even more excited about all the weddings to come in 2021 and we’ve got some great styles arriving for the season ahead!

Veni Infantino 29607 Cherry

❤ Front and centre of the mother-of-the-bride and -groom trends is the midi dress. The popularity of this style has grown over the last few years, but for 2021 it stands out as the star of the show. Harking back to the days of Audrey Hepburn, there’s just something so elegant about this look. The fitted bust leads to a neat waistline to create a lovely shape as the skirt skims over the hips flaring down to the calves. While you do need some height, a pair of heels really complements the shape and gives you the stance to make the most of what’s set to become one of the most popular choices this year.

EXPERT ADVICE

❤ There are some great options you can wear not only to the wedding but afterwards too. Trends for next year include a less formal 50’s look with below-the-knee flared skirt and sweeping neckline. ❤ Classic looks from the likes of Condici are always on trend; elegant and comfortable this kind of style will never go out of fashion. ❤ The key to looking fab at any wedding is getting the colours right and for 2021 pinks, blues and multi-colour florals are in. We love the floral prints for summer weddings and with so many varied and alternative venues available nowadays it gives the option of looking amazing without the formality.

❤ Choosing the accessories can take as long as finding the right dress and the hatinator is set to be one of the coming year’s top picks. This style of disc on a headband is easier to wear than a hat and less likely to spoil your hairstyle. New designs include large fascinators on wide headbands adding striking detail to any look. Opt for something to either match your outfit or add contrast with a different colour. ❤ No matter what you choose the Rainbow Club shoe collection provides an easy option for any mother as they can be dyed in any colour to match your outfit. CAKE CREATIONS

www.nadjalitau-photography.com

We’re great cake lovers and want a showstopper for our wedding that’s right on trend. What would you suggest? Helen says: Large three- or four-tier cakes are still the most popular choice, however if you’re having a more intimate wedding, two tiers can look just as fabulous dressed using a mix of beautiful sugar flowers and natural dried ones to add height. Other key trends include:

❤ Pretty florals using stunning dried, edible and handmade sugar flowers are very popular. I absolutely love creating sugar flowers as they are the perfect addition to a beautiful cake. Team them with a little pampas or dried bunny tail grass for a stunning design that your guests will be swooning over.

www.confetticoast.co.uk

www.facebook.com/lizaedgingtonphotography

PLANET FRIENDLY

www.lovefromlucyphotography.com

❤ Decorative details such as marbling with metallics and different textures like ruffles are also a big talking point and will make your cake stand out. Alternatively opt for a clean simple style using pretty green foliage for a minimalist look. Semi naked and buttercream creations remain popular and are great for a beautiful rustic theme.

❤ Bold colours can look dramatic and create a real talking point. Black is incredibly striking dressed with the right flowers and you’ll certainly wow your guests with deep rich hues teamed with stunning florals.

We want our wedding to be as green as possible but still big on style. Can we have both? Sian says: More and more couples are looking for ways to lower the carbon footprint of their big day. Sustainability is a key issue and there are more and more options available for those looking to make greener choices without compromising on wedding wow factor. Here are just some of the latest styling ideas with a focus on eco friendly alternatives. ❤ Hire your tableware and glassware to avoid waste. ❤ Paper flowers are recyclable and there’s no need to worry if the blooms you have your heart set on are in season or not. Flowers pictured by www.petalandbird.co.uk ❤ Opt for stationery printed on seed paper which rather than being thrown away can be planted afterwards to turn into a beautiful display of wild flowers. Stationery pictured by www.poppyandthistle.co.uk Sian Bowron | Wedding planner | www.amethystweddings.co.uk

❤ Display your wedding cake perfectly on a pedestal cake stand, raising it up high for all to see. Make it a real focal point by creating a whole table with matching mini cakes and beautifully iced biscuits for all your guests to enjoy. Helen Jalim | Cake maker | www.helenjanecakedesign.co.uk

EXPERT ADVICE

Q&A

Local experts on seasonal good looks

WINTER WOW FACTOR

I always wear the same light make-up but don’t want to look tired or washed-out in the photos for my winter wedding. How can I ramp it up so I still look like me but just a more glamorous version? Melinda says: Make-up for a winter wedding is quite different and the timing of your day is an important factor. If you’re getting married later in the afternoon the light outside may not be as good for the photos and you may have to have them taken inside. You’re also likely to be spending the majority of the time under artificial light which means you can get away with a much more glamorous look and slightly heavier make-up. Although the skin is naturally paler in the winter you can avoid looking washed out by using just a hint of bronzer to give you a natural radiance and plenty of blusher for a healthy glow. A cream blusher is great for a natural sheen and using a highlighter on your cheekbones will give you a gorgeous shimmer too. For a really glam look accentuate your eyes with slightly stronger colours, like warm brown with a deeper shade on the outer areas for a gentle smoky look or grey tones for a cooler effect; great for blue eyes. For a semi-smoky alternative try adding a dark brown or grey eyeliner along the top of your eyelash line and below along

the lash line then fade it out just past the middle. This will make your eyes pop and for added drama try a black liquid top liner. For a touch of sparkle add a light shimmery eyeshadow colour on the mid to inside area of the lower lid and bring it inwards to the corner to brighten the inner eye area. A little sparkly shimmer on the brow bone looks pretty too but be careful not to over-do it with glittery eyeshadows as they don’t look great in the photos when flash photography is used. If you prefer something more subtle for your eyes it’s important to have great lashes and defined brows and maybe emphasise the lips instead with warm berry colours or a bold red for extra Hollywood glam. Whatever look you choose, take into account the style of your dress, hair and also your colour scheme as these also play an important part in the overall effect. If face masks have to be worn at any point then make sure the focus is on the eyes. A natural lip colour is going to be a safer bet and less likely to show if there’s a slight smudge. A matt colour would be ideal, blot your lipstick or even use a ‘stay-on’ brand. Have a little top-up pot of foundation or powder and a pocket mirror handy so you can repair any damage caused. Melinda Hollis | www.makeoversbymelinda.co.uk

TOP TRENDS We’ve had to postpone our wedding until summer 2021 and I want to update my bridal make-up so it’s current and on trend. What looks and colours are likely to be popular? Ema says: The monochrome look is great for your flowers, décor and bridesmaids’ dresses and lends itself to the bare-faced make-up trend for 2021. It’s harder to pull off than you might think though. To avoid looking washed out or like you’re wearing no make-up at all, focus on the four basics – freshlooking skin, brushed brows, healthy cheeks and lip stain. Concealing is key here but opt for colour corrective products as opposed to heavy coverage ones. Spring and summer will see colours like sage, coral and even gold emerging. This is perfectly complemented by the bold-eye trend. Choose earthy tones with a metallic finish instead of matt smoky shades and you’ll be on to a winner. Add highlighters in creamy gold or shell pink in the centre of the lid to open the eye and finish with a chocolate or burgundy liner. If you’re getting married in the autumn or winter you could choose a trendsetting celestial theme or dark and dramatic colour palettes are set to be big in 2021. A red lip is perfectly suited to this and with so many shades to choose from, go for the one that suits you best. The three key notes to consider here are tone (cool or warm), clarity (sheer or opaque) and finish (matt or glossy). Have fun playing with all the options! Themed around the tradition for brides to incorporate something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue on their wedding day, the historic Elvetham Hotel in Hartley Wintney, Hampshire provided the perfect backdrop to showcase a fresh twist on the time-honoured custom. Organiser and florist Hannah Baker explains, “Traditionally the something blue symbolised purity, love and fidelity; elements that are captured

throughout the shoot with many romantic touches and moments of tenderness.” Set up as an intimate wedding using shades of blue and silver accents, the styling was kept simple and minimalist. To switch things up, model Lindsey changed into a cool bridal jumpsuit with her hair in a soft updo to complement the look. The Campervan photo booth was a fun addition for stunning photos in the grounds. “As the sun was setting we had fun with some smoke bombs, introducing something blue in another soft but dramatic way,” adds Hannah.

Milani Bold Colour Statement Matte Lipstick, www.milanimakeup.co.uk, £10

“With a creamy matte texture this lippy is comfortable to wear and doesn’t transfer. Long-lasting it stays in place through coffees and snacks, but could probably do with a little top up after lunch. Plus, She’s a Lady is a super-feminine girly pink, lovely for a rosy bride look. Incredible value for money, it’s a great staple for your make-up bag. Why not try all the colours?” – Kelly Andrews

“This handbag must-have goes on like a dream and certainly lived up to its name. The wonderfully lush creamy formula glides on smoothly and stays on without flaking, making me feel fabulous all day! It left my lips feeling soft and smooth too – win, win!” – Sarah Reeve

“After using a tint for the first time I’m a convert! This colour was divine, and what I like is that you can layer it up and build the tone to your desired effect; soft subtle pink by day and a deep red by night. It lasted all day after drinking and eating, and even stayed on when I applied a balm over the top. A must-have for your make-up bag.” – Danielle Harvey

“Straight away, I loved the sturdy packaging and precise applicator. The lightweight formula has fantastic pigmentation and the product has a matte finish. There’s no cracking or bleeding because of the avocado oil, vitamin E, and hyaluronic filling spheres, which I’m very thankful for as there’s nothing I hate more than dry lips! The beautiful shade lasted hours on my lips and I got compliments all day when I wore it!” – Olivia Gibson

MU LAC Velvet Ink, www.mulaccosmetics.com, £13.34

“The Lip Definer was easy to use, and I loved the way it looked. I put it on first thing, and by the time I went to bed it was still firmly in place, looking fabulous, even though I’d been in the rain most of the day. I had fun playing with the dual-ended pencil and brush creating a look that suited me and paired it with Unforgettable Lipstick in Legendary, but as it’s a natural shade it would work well with most colours.” – Melissa Barker

SHADE: UNDRESSED WITH LEGENDARY

“Historically, matte lipsticks have been my worst enemy – being a notorious lip-biter they show up all my flaws. But it’s safe to say that this product has changed my mindset. The finish, although definitely matte, is somehow silky and smooth. The best thing about this particular shade is that it’s bold enough to look like you’ve made an effort without being OTT – the perfect lazy-girl hack! It also has incredible staying power, but that does mean you need to be careful to apply correctly the first time as it doesn’t budge!” – Beth Morton

SHADE: NICE TO MEET YA

Illamasqua Beyond Lipstick, www.illamasqua.com, £20 “Upon application you could definitely tell this was a luxe cream lipstick as it has a balm consistency and left my lips feeling nourished with a noticeable shimmer. Plus, I didn’t have the typical drying of the lips, which I find some products cause. This lipstick is one to keep on you and reapply throughout the day for longevity.” – Danielle Harvey

LOOKING YOUR BEST

you

Local experts on how to look and feel your big-day best

P

lanning a wedding can be pretty hectic, particularly if you’re working to a tight timetable. It’s easy to get lost in a whirl of colour swatches, to-do lists, spreadsheets and appointments and forget one of the most important things – you; and your other half of course! To enjoy the journey and de-stress the planning process as much as possible, try to let go of the reins delegate where possible and prioritise the most important things, like being kind to yourself and not sweating the small stuff. Sleepless nights, stress and anxiety are barriers to becoming the relaxed, radiant bride of your dreams so remember to factor in some all-important ‘me-time’.

THINKING AHEAD One of the key priorities on the road to looking and feeling your bridal best, is not leaving things to the last minute. Some things aren’t a quick fix so it pays to put in the groundwork early to get the best results. Do your research, look online, scour wedding magazines and start putting together a moodboard of inspiration; your suppliers will love you for it as it makes their job so much easier if they can share your vision. Matching your look to the style of your venue is another key consideration if you want to achieve a coordinated effect. A good starting point is to focus on the kind of bride you want to be, traditional or alternative, chic and elegant or free-spirited boho? With so much choice, it’s important to find what suits you and your personality in order to still look and feel like you on the big day, but just a more glamorous version. 87

FINDING THE ONE Once the dress is in the bag, everything else can flow from there, from the type of hairstyle you choose, the make-up, jewellery and accessories. Although it’s tempting to start looking straight away, Mary Cox of Twirl Bridal Boutique in Petersfield, Hampshire recommends holding fire until other key factors are in place. She says, “I always advise couples to choose and book their venue first and, if they’re planning to theme their wedding, have a think about that too. Then comes the exciting time of shopping for your dress. Most boutiques offer gowns for sale direct from the shop, but if you want a new one ordered in, you need to consider how long that will take. At Twirl we can turn it around in 16 to 20 weeks but if you want to look a year ahead, that’s absolutely fine too.”

MARY’S TOP TIPS

Nova

❤ What to look for and how to prepare Research the places you want to visit. Look at their websites, contact the owners and ask anything you like, nothing is a ‘silly’ question. Avoid booking too many appointments as you may be overwhelmed by the choices available! Choose according to the range they offer and how you feel about the initial welcome you receive. Boutiques that offer bridesmaid dresses, shoes, accessories and alteration services are great for a one-stop-shop approach. It means that they can work with you and enjoy being part of your whole wedding journey. ❤ Who to take with you It’s best to go with just a few people whose opinions you value. Remember, the bigger the crowd, the more confused you may feel! Keep an open mind, try on styles you wouldn’t usually pick and be guided by the boutique’s stylist as they can often surprise you with a ‘wild-card’ option. First and foremost, it should be about having fun, feeling relaxed and enjoying the experience of finding your dream dress! ❤ What to wear at the appointment Make it easy for yourself, wear everyday underwear that you feel comfortable in and discuss with the shop what type of lingerie will work best with your dress. Don’t be shy in the changing room, the stylist can help by providing a modesty gown or just by chatting to make you feel comfortable. Don’t forget we’ve seen it all before! VEIL POINTER

www.sephotography.co.uk

www.sephotography.co.uk

If you’re having a veil, decide if you want to wear it over your face or for decoration only as this will affect your hairstyle and choice of hair accessories.

When should I book my hair colour, beauty treatments and wash my hair before the wedding? Wash your hair at least 24 hours before the ceremony to allow it to settle so it won’t look either too fluffy or greasy. Your hairstyle will last so much longer if you do this. For any dramatic changes to your regular beauty regime, I suggest having a practice run in the months leading up to the wedding, then you can test how long the effects of the treatment will last. A good rule of thumb is to not have any treatments done, other than nails, in the two days before the big day.

BEAUTY COUNTDOWN ❤ Haircut, three to 14 days before ❤ Hair colour, five to 10 days ❤ Facial, five to 10 days ❤ Hair removal, three to five days ❤ Spray tan, two to four days

EASY HACKS FOR QUICK RESULTS ❤ Hair masks and vitamin facials ❤ Drink two litres of water daily ❤ Enrich your diet with omega oils, skin, hair and nail supplements I don’t know what hair accessories I want, do I need them for the trial? Not necessarily, once you’ve discussed your dress, flowers and hairstyle ideas at the trial, your stylist will be able to advise you on the most suitable accessories. They, or your bridal boutique, may have sample accessories like veils, combs and pins for you to try, which will help you visualise the finished look. If you’re considering hair extensions, definitely discuss this in advance and include them in your trial.

How far in advance should I book my hair and make-up? As early as possible! Not only to ensure your favourite make-up artist and hair stylist is available, but so they can advise you on a beauty regime in plenty of time for you to take effective steps. Don’t be afraid to ask at the time of booking; there’s lots you can do even in just three months before the big day.

Caroline Swaffield of Amazing Face Bridal Hair and Makeup shares her industry insight into key trends for the year ahead. She says, “We like to keep it boho simple yet beautiful and we love a less-is-more look. Our mantra is that making brides look and feel pretty is essential.” For 2021 brides she predicts: ❤ With demand for more of a soft fresh glow we’re finding ourselves concentrating on getting skin back in tip top condition to give brides the best base for their make-up. Foundations are being used to enhance rather than mask what’s beneath in order to reveal natural beauty and radiance . ❤ Blush is back for that effortless English-rose effect, along with subtle contouring (something we make-up artists have always loved). ❤ Old-fashioned pot rouge is back; great for a natural pop of colour. My favourites are Charlotte Tilbury Las Salinas Beach Stick and Stila Convertible Colour in Peony. ❤ Hair-wise think sleek and sophisticated and, of course, the much-beloved Hollywood waves, no tight crunchy curls for 2021 just pure fun and elegance! ne of the positive things to come from the challenges of 2020 has been the chance to focus more on the things that really matter. With time to evaluate and take stock many newlyweds-to-be have been patiently waiting for their big day to come or opting to marry now and party later. Whatever the choice, love has triumphed in many different ways. Here local suppliers shine the light on what’s at the heart of every wedding – the happy couple, not forgetting their furry friends of course! Southampton-based wedding photographer Katherine Mills explains the concept for this cool shoot was centred on an intimate city elopement. “The aim was to create a nontraditional wedding with realism, authenticity and rawness; a loved-up, run-away couple in a cosy setting without a care in the world. Focusing on the two of them and their connection, we added key wedding elements such as flowers and cake.”
