Where to say ‘I do’ in east Hertfordshire WARE PRIORY
01920 460 316 | www.warepriory.co.uk Situated in seven acres of picturesque gardens and steeped in history, Ware Priory is a beautiful, traditional Grade I listed building with contemporary touches and architecture dating back to Medieval times. The main building is a stunning location with whitewashed frontage and stonewalled exterior surrounded by flower beds and distinctive windows. Adjacent to this, the Fletcher’s Lea is a modern addition to the estate and features a decking area, which overlooks the beautiful River Lea. Guests can arrive or leave by narrowboat at the side of the building. There are multiple spaces for ceremonies and receptions, allowing couples to create their dream day. The Priory Hall was restored in the 1990s, where Medieval graffiti of a rose was uncovered and Victorian murals preserved and restored. This area can accommodate 100 guests for the ‘I dos’, 80 for wedding breakfasts and 100 for all evening receptions. The Conservatory offers a bright and spacious interior with easy access to the riverside gardens for 100 people, the space is also ideal for wedding breakfasts with 120 guests and receptions for 150. Or why not exchange vows in The Hadsley Room with 40 guests, which features a crown-post roof and vaulted ceiling? The space can be transformed for wedding breakfasts with 30 people and evening receptions with 40. The large refectory table in this room dates back to the 14th-century and is believed to be from the original Friary. The Fletcher’s Lea can host up to 200 guests for ceremonies, 160 for the wedding breakfasts and 200 for receptions. The standalone building includes all catering and bar facilities, which allows couples to have exclusive use of the space on the special day. Additionally, there’s a private terrace offering views over the River Lea and access to all the gardens within the Priory Estate. The Riverside Suite is situated within Fletcher’s Lea and is perfect for large wedding receptions and can accommodate up to 160 guests for dining and 220 for a buffet setting. A space that stands out at the venue is The Island, which is situated in the middle of a river and includes a bandstand for musical events or bands for a festival-styled reception. Guests access this space by one of two small bridges that cross an inlet of water that was once used to bring supplies to the monks from the river. The venue has also announced new catering partnerships with Gusto Catering, Premier Crew Hospitality, The Chef’s Table and The London
Kitchen. Each partner brings a wealth of experience in event catering, a love of food, exceptional service and the willingness to please their guests. The venue’s currently running a special offer for couples who book the venue for their wedding. This includes accommodation on the wedding night for the newlyweds at Hanbury Manor, a £100 discount with Ware Priory’s dressing partner Victoria’s Events and complimentary bacon rolls for the evening buffet.

Venue dilemmas answered!
What should you take into consideration before booking a venue for our wedding? TOP FIVE
www.zoecooperphotography.co.uk
Here are five essential things to take into consideration before you book a wedding venue... ❤ Understand the logistics and budget by having a rough idea of how many guests you’d like to invite. Many venues will be crossed off your list at this stage before you go and look at them. ❤ An factor to consider when choosing your venue is availability. ❤ Take into account the setting and decide what style you’re looking for such as elegant, vintage or modern to help find venues that match your theme. ❤ Make a list of questions to ask at showrounds to help narrow down which venues are right for you. You can then confidently make a shortlist of two to three places and hold provisional bookings whilst you check the registrar has your preferred date and time available. ❤ Get to know the team behind the venue; the more confidence you have in the team, the smoother the planning process will be. Kate Deeks | Dyrham Park Country Club | www.dyrhampark.com
KEEP IT PERSONAL The most important consideration when choosing where to get married is to find a venue that reflects your personality as a couple. A few good questions to ask yourself would be; where would you feel most comfortable being the centre of attention, and what kind of event you’d like to share with friends and family? Maybe one of the important aspects is good food and wine, live music, a perfect backdrop for your pictures or all of the above. You may be drawn to a formal, glamorous affair or something more intimate. Visit a few different spaces and meet the wedding coordinators. It’s also important to sample menus and wine to make sure you like what’s on offer. You’ll soon get a feel for what feels right for you both. Whatever your budget, there’s something special out there that has your name on it. This could be exclusive hire of a cosy pub with amazing food, a barn in the countryside or a manor house oozing with elegance. A good venue will want to make your wedding day perfect, so make sure you form a good rapport with the staff so that together, you can create a day to remember. Good luck and above all, have fun in the process! Taylor Morphew | The White Horse, Hertingfordbury www.whitehorsehertingfordbury.co.uk
PLAN AHEAD
https://riamishaal.com
Choosing a wedding venue is so exciting and there’s lots to choose from. We’d recommend checking out wedding venues online first, and exploring the style you might like for the big day. Be open-minded as there are so many options out there! Don’t forget to check out the venue’s social media too as there will be lots of photos and insight to give you a feel of the venue. Make a shortlist of the places you’d like to visit and contact them for a chat about your plans and make an appointment to look around. It’s really important to see a venue in person if you can. We recommend you visit as many as possible to find a space that’s a perfect fit for your day and gives you a good comparison of what’s on offer at different places. It’s a good time to think about whether you want to hold both your ceremony and reception at your chosen location or whether you want to get married at a church or registry office first. Check out the venue’s different ceremony options and ask if they offer ceremonies inside and outside depending on the weather and the time of year. Finally, think about what’s most important to you! Is that the style of the venue, the choice of indoor and outdoor spaces, gorgeous gardens for photos, the wedding food or the ceremony spaces? With a little research, you’ll be sure to find a venue that ticks all your boxes! Jane Price | South Farm | www.south-farm.co.uk 23

REAL WEDDINGS
D
uda was only a teenager when she met Christopher at a friend’s youth group gathering at their local church. She says, “My family came to England as missionaries to help out our church’s youth and Chris was there for the free food. He was always super down-to-earth, kind and loving with his friends and always open for trying new things.” Christopher loved how hilarious, but incredibly kind and super-family orientated Duda was. Fast forward the years; the pair purchased tickets to Amsterdam on a whim where they rented bikes and rode them around until 2 am. They found the perfect spot to sit down and started playing a childhood game. Duba says, “One of us was blindfolded with our hands out trying to guess what objects the other person had placed into our hands. After a few tries, Chris took my blindfold off to reveal an engagement ring.” The wedding date was set for September 15th, 2019 and the pair created the perfect day surrounded by their loved ones.
SETTING THE SCENE The couple opted for a simple garden-themed wedding and when it came to booking the perfect venue, what location could be better than Minstrel Court? Duda says, “We wanted the day to feel relaxed and like we were getting married in someone’s back yard.” Due to a tight budget, the bride-to-be got creative with some DIY projects and ensured all the money spent would go towards good causes and helping local suppliers. The couple picked a vintage canvas frame for the table plan and every table had a number attached to Polaroids of the couple throughout the years. For decoration, the pair added a wide range of flowers to each table.
LOOKING THE PART When it came to finding the perfect wedding dress, Duda fell in love with a simple A-line gown from Clifford Burr Bridal that happened to be the boutiques’s last one – it was destiny! She says, “The dress was created from a silky fabric that gave off a pearly shimmer when the sunlight hit. I was drawn to the dress initially because of the pockets in the skirt, but it was also a blank canvas where I could add more details if needed.” The bride ended up adding off-the-shoulder sleeves to make the design even more elegant. She adds, “I was so emotional when I looked in the mirror. I was never the kind of girl that would dream about her big day or dress, but everything came together in my mind once I saw it.” Chris wore a lovely navy-blue suit paired with a tie that matched the bridesmaids’ dresses and the groomsmen wore matching suits but with waistcoats. The bridesmaids had the freedom to pick any gown style as long as it matched closely to a particular shade. She says, “Funnily enough, none of them saw each other and to my amazement, their colours coordinated perfectly!”
TIME TO CELEBRATE When it came to entertainment, the couple provided a wide range of music from Brazilian and Latin songs to British and American pop. The bride says, “Both of our families are from very different cultures and backgrounds, having my very Brazilian auntie dance the Cha-Cha Slide was a treat as well as seeing Chris’s grandad schooling us on samba!”
MEMORABLE MOMENTS The wedding was full of so many beautiful moments. Even though the 33
couple were exhausted by the end of the night, they were so happy to have all their friends and family in one place – it really was a celebration of two families coming together. The speeches were something that really stood out to the newlyweds with so many beautiful and kind words shared by their nearest and dearest. Many funny moments happened throughout the day, but the couple had a surprise in the evening when they couldn’t get into their hotel room. The bride says, “My bridesmaid had to catch a flight on the same night for a tour, and took our hotel room key to America by mistake. Our parents had to give up their room so we could sleep in peace!” Many local suppliers worked hard to make the wedding extra special, including their photographer. Duda comments, “We absolutely loved having Howard at Absolutephotouk capture our wedding! He went above and beyond to learn a few Portuguese words to keep my family in the loop and make them happy.” She adds, “We also want to thank the caterers at Minstrel Court who supplied extra food for some surprise and last-minute guests!”
HONEYMOON After a day full of celebrations and memories, the couple set off to Crete for a week in a lovely hotel called The Syntopia. Here they could reflect on their special day and enjoy their first moments as newlyweds.
“Never be afraid to say ‘no’ to your friends and family as it’s your day!” – Duda

icky and Alexsia first met on an online dating app called Plenty of Fish, where they instantly hit it off and plucked up the courage to meet. Alexsia says, “After a few weeks, we both felt so comfortable around each other and were ready to say those three little words!” Ricky proposed at The Bull Theatre in Barnet on stage in front of nearly 200 people. Alexsia comments, “It was the final night of the
show which I had just finished co-directing and Ricky was the stage manager. I had a feeling he was going to propose as his mum had hinted about a similar situation two years before. I never thought he would actually do it and was so shocked when he called me up on stage!” Here Alexsia shares details about their special day… 39

ames and Mayssa started talking over Tinder back in 2018 while she was visiting the UK as a distance learner at the University of Leicester. Although she had been in the UK for several months during the summer, she was leaving to go back home. James says, “We met before she left and discovered a strong attraction and many common interests. We’re both vegan, yoga practitioners, fitness enthusiasts, mathematicians and even share the same birthday!” A few days after meeting, James booked Mayssaa a flight to Paris where he met her and they travelled via Eurostar back to his home in Hitchin. He adds, “Despite the visit being short, our relationship developed very quickly and we had already spoken about love before she returned home.” On their first anniversary, the couple decided to get married and the date was set for April 6th, 2021. Here Mayssa shares details about their special day...

ASK THE EXPERTS
Q&A Our experts give their advice to help you look your big-day best
BIG-DAY BEAUTIFUL I’m looking for an eyeshadow to make my hazel eyes pop; what would you suggest? The most amazing thing about having this eye colour is the number of shades available that will complement hazel eyes – you can use colours to bring out the green or enhance the brown tones by using gold, brown or bronze shades to add warmth to the eyes. If you wanted to be more experimental with your makeup, green hues would instantly make your eyes appear bigger and brighter. Hayley Bronti Makeup By Hayley www.instagram.com/makeupby_hayleyxx
FINDING THE ONE I’m so excited to start looking for a wedding dress, when should I start shopping and what is important to bring to my first appointment? When it comes to finding the perfect gown, start your search no later than one year before the special day. Bespoke wedding dresses can take quite some time to make due to the incredible details needed and you’ll need to allow plenty of time for alterations. For your first appointment, we recommend wearing nudecoloured underwear and a strapless bra. Most wedding dresses do not need to be worn with a bra, so be prepared to take this off if you’re comfortable doing so. If you already have your wedding shoes and accessories, bring them along to see if they work with the dress you love. Just remember to trust your consultant and have fun! SILKY SMOOTH
I’d heard about the wonderous effects of silk on hair, but was slightly sceptical until I discovered British brand, This Is Silk. I can tell you I haven’t looked back since. If, like me, you’re growing concerned about the increasing knot of hair wrapped around your hair band, check out the silk skinnies. Made from 22 momme mulberry silk, they protect your hair from friction, kinks and damage, offering strong hold without the unwanted effects of a standard elastic hair band. No longer do I pull a clump of hair out of my head whenever I take my hair down and it already looks in much better condition overall. The bunny skinnies are my super-cute personal favourites, worth every penny. Head over to https://thisissilk.com, you won’t regret it!

MAKING

Kelly Andrews talks to bridal hair specialist Heather Dapaah about her top big-day looks
66
INTERVIEW If you could choose any celebrity to work with, who would it be and why? Can I give two? Michelle Obama and Dina Asher-Smith. They’re very different but both stand for excellence and class. They’re extremely down-to-earth, hard workers and I really admire them both. What’s hot in bridal hair at the moment? Definitely the more relaxed hair styles that look romantic and sultry. So, it makes sense that romantic waves, maybe with the sides pinned up, are popular at the minute.
A
ward-winning hair stylist Heather Dapaah opened her London-based salon, Her Definition at 23 and since then doors have continued to open on her career, working on TV sets, music videos, and getting celebs eventready. To name drop a few, Heather’s clients have included reality stars Kaz Crossley and Priscilla Anyabu, athlete Perri Shakes-Drayton, and British RnB artists Ray BLK, Miraa May and Dolapo. She’s known for her signature Hollywood waves and says, “I love to help women understand their true hair type and learn how they can achieve their hair goals.” Heather is highly sought after for her wide range of hair knowledge, having worked with all hair types and textures, so CWM beauty editor Kelly Andrews was delighted that she was able to take some time out to chat to her about their mutual passion – bridal hair.
I would say, start with the neckline of your desired dress because that will determine how much space we have to play around with. Obviously, face shape is really important too. In general, most people know what hairstyles suit them best, but you want to push the boundaries a little and come out of your comfort zone for your big day. Finally, the style of dress: whether it’s A-line, ballgown, fishtail and so on. Ultimately, you want a well-balanced silhouette. So, if you have an A-line that’s quite slim at the bottom, you can get away with bigger, wow-factor up dos.
If you could impart just one piece of essential advice to brides about their big-day, what would it be? Please take in the moment. Stop thinking of how people will view the day, the reception or indeed, you. Just think of the blessing of marriage and take in every moment.
What’s the biggest pitfall brides should take care to avoid when it comes to their wedding hair? Make sure you have a trial with the hair stylist if you haven’t already seen them do the look you have in mind. It’s also important to practice your wedding hair style as what you think you want might not look or feel right for your day.
Are there any red-carpet celebrity styles that you’ve created that would translate to a bridal look? I’d have to say Gatsby-themed Hollywood waves and vintage waves. No matter what the latest hair trend is you always see these looks on red carpets everywhere.
How can brides ensure their hair is in its best condition for the big day? Do exactly as your wedding hair stylist recommends! This is the only time I would say don’t listen to your hairdresser, because your bridal specialist knows and understands the look you have envisioned together.
What hair products or tools can’t you live without? For bridal hairstyling it’s my one-inch curling tong, liquid hairspray by L’Oréal Studio Line, hair pins and my tail comb.
What’s next for you? Well, after the detrimental effects of this pandemic, it’s definitely to get back to my beloved brides. I’d love to work on some celebrity weddings too.
How can a bride set about deciding the right style for her on her wedding day?
For further information, check out www.herdefinition.co.uk
What’s your main ethos when it comes to creating wedding hair? No matter what the look is I always try to create statement hair that’s timeless, classy and stylish. What’s your signature look? My clients always want my signature Hollywood waves, which instantly add glamour and volume to lustrous locks. It’s a timeless look that’s more than a trend, enhancing any wedding style. What’s been the highlight of your career so far? I’ve been super fortunate in my career so far, especially on a global-scale as I get to meet lots of people. I’d have to say the highlight is the recognition I’ve received for the elegance of my bridal hairstyling. 67
Wedding wellness
The last year’s been tough – take some time out for self-care and focus on your wellbeing #HYDRATIONISKEY
We all know by now that hydration is imperative to good health and a key part of any beauty regime. And if you haven’t been told by now that it’s the key to your wedding skin prep – you will be! However, switching that second cup of coffee for tap water isn’t necessarily the easiest change to swallow. What if we told you there was something that hydrated you faster than ordinary water, tasted better and provided an energising alternative to that acidic cuppa? It’s time to say “hello” to alkaline water. Actiph Water is the UK’s first alkaline ionised water. Purified from Shropshire with added electrolytes and minerals it hydrates you fast and helps to give your skin it’s glow back. Find out more at https://actiphwater.com
#FRESHSTART Bored with hot water and lemon in the morning? Then maybe it’s time for a Fresh Start with Pukka’s newest caffeine-free organic tea. Expertly blended with sustainablysourced organic herbs, delicious zesty organic lemon and warming aromatic fennel seeds, it gently awakens your body and mind to a new day helping you feel your brightest self. What’s more, this stimulating yet soothing blend helps to strengthen the digestive system to support optimum metabolism. Priced at £2.99 for 20 sachets, it’s available at https://uk.pukkaherbs.com, and from health food stores and supermarkets across the land.

#ThePowerOfSleep Given the trials of the last year, looking after ourselves at home has never been more important, so to help with this endeavour, The Somerset Toiletry Company has created a collection of gifts to promote self-care and wellness and we’re all about its Sleepeze range. After all, the importance of sleep when it comes to ultimate wellbeing can never be underestimated, it’s crucial for body and mind. The Sleepeze Calming Gift Set, £9.95, includes a silky eye mask, pillow mist, and essential oil-based rollerball. Then there’s the Calming Sleep Stones, £11.95 – 200g of volcanic rock infused with essential oils to enhance your night-time routine. Finally, in the collection is the Calming Bath Salts, £4.95, perfect for washing away that build up of daily stress before bed. Treat yourself at www.thesomersettoiletryco.co.uk
#SCREENEYES Modern life means we spend more and more time on our devices and computers, and since you blink six to eight times less when you look at a screen, it’s no wonder that many of us are ending the day with tired and heavy eyes. Dry eye syndrome is a condition that affects around 80 per cent of us – a sobering thought considering screen use has increased by 187 per cent over the last three lockdowns. To combat this problem, modern eyecare brand Peep Club has launched its new Relief Eye Spray, £15, which hydrates eyes from the inside out with a clever combo of vegan-friendly, organic and wild-harvested ingredients. It’s suitable for even the most sensitive of peepers, as well as being safe for contact lens wearers and can be used over make-up. Check out www.peepclub.com

BLOOMIN’ BEAUTIFUL
What flowers would work perfectly for an autumn wedding? As the weather starts to cool and we move on from summer weddings, I love to add the depth of colour and texture into my designs. Flowers set within a variety of foliage and herbs such as rosemary and berries are becoming popular. Here are a few ideas that would work well for the time of year… Hypericum berries are available in a wide range of colours from white to almost black and add a touch of autumn to any colour scheme. Chamelaucium (waxflower) is a delicate flower with small berry like buds which give a hint of the changing season. Berried eucalyptus and ferns are a firm favourite of mine to soften designs. Deep-coloured roses sit well with blush tones and cymbidium orchids. Dahlias, big blousy blooms, add a touch of drama and Eryngium thistles are perfect for texture. READY, SET, BAKE ACCESSORISE AND SHINE I’m struggling to find jewellery for my wedding day with the number of options out there. What top tips can you share when it comes to finding the perfect pieces? Consider the style of wedding ring you’re looking for, whether you’d like a plain band, one with gemstones or even something completely bespoke. A bespoke ring is a great option to match and fit around your engagement ring seamlessly, and it can be a fantastic opportunity to express your style. Always consider your partner’s band too and if you’d like the metals and styles to coordinate. Wearing a piece with sentimental value is a wonderful option for a momentous occasion, whether it’s a borrowed piece or something remodelled from an older jewellery item such as a family heirloom. If you’re buying new jewellery, go for classic pieces that can be used again after the wedding. A pendant or simple pair of earrings can be worn forever and always remind you of the magical day. It’s essential to choose something comfortable and make sure you’ve worn the pieces previously in case any adjustments are needed. Jerry Greig | Jerry Greig Ltd www.instagram.com/jerry_greig
We’re having an intimate wedding but still want a showstopping cake. How can we achieve this? If the global pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that we need to adapt and create alternatives to not only our daily lives, but for weddings as well. When it comes to finding the perfect cake for your intimate wedding, you might be trying to figure out how it can pack a punch and wow the crowd. I recently created a trio of beautiful single tier cakes for a wedding with 15 guests consisting of three families. This allowed each family to devour their cake there and then or take it away to enjoy later. These beautiful bakes each featured a vibrant pink sugar peony, foliage and a gorgeous, oversized silk ribbon which matched the bride’s outfit. Another option is creating a cake display with stem flowers in bud vases, a coloured cake stand or something elaborate and unusual. Last summer, I styled a botanicalthemed wedding cake with a hoop and stand covered in foliage which sat on an awesome mobile bar! RING-A-DING-DING
We want to purchase beautiful wedding rings, but we have a small budget. How can we get around this? Even with a small budget, bespoke rings can be the perfect way to design something that’s not only special but also affordable. From classic polished wedding rings to ones with texture or even a bit of sparkle, your jewellery designer is there to give you a helping hand and advise accordingly. It’s always best to have an open and honest conversation about your needs, desires and budget at the beginning of the design process. You’ll know what’s realistic this way and what can be done to make your dream rings possible. Wedding bands come in different metals, widths and weights and the cost can be reduced significantly by picking a thinner band, fewer diamonds or a different metal. There’s always the much loved and sustainable option of using inherited or unworn jewellery to make the rings. There could be a few small diamonds sitting in your jewellery box just waiting to be brought back to life. Not only can this be costeffective, but it’s a very sentimental process. Sarah Heulwen Lewis | Heulwen Lewis Bespoke www.heulwenlewisbespoke.com
SWEET SENSATIONS What advice can you share with me when it comes to creating a versatile cake table? A versatile cake table is a perfect way to offer guests delicious, sweet treats and display your cut wedding cake. It’s more relaxed and informal than a dessert table and can follow the wedding theme if desired. So many couples worry about having cake leftover, so this option allows them to have less cake to cut and other delicious small bites that their guests can’t resist. The aim is to attract loved ones to find the cake and other goodies that often end up unattractively at the end of the buffet table and can go unnoticed. If there’s any guests with special dietary needs, a cake table is a perfect place to have alternatives and make all guests feel included. Gluten, dairy-free or vegan-baked goods can not only taste amazing but be bagged beautifully and labelled clearly. Providing bespoke boxes for each guest to take the delicious treats home is a great way to keep everyone happy and avoid waste.

Our wedding day is coming up but I’m nervous about making a speech, what advice can you share with me? Public speaking fills many people with dread; having to stand up in front of people, use a microphone or remembering what to say can be nerve-racking. I’m a confidence and self-belief coach and here are my top tips to help you feel more confident… The reason you’re making the speech is because of the relationship you have with the newlyweds; use that thought to spur you on. A wedding crowd is a warm audience who want to hear what you’re going to say about the happy couple and are not judging you. Be wary as a couple of drinks might help take the edge off your nerves, but too many and you won’t be able to deliver the speech properly. Make some notes before the day or write the whole speech out if that helps. Even if you don’t use the notes, knowing they are there will reassure you. Eye contact works; pick somebody in the audience who gives you visual reassurance and focus on them. Even if it feels like an eternity, time goes quickly and most speeches are five minutes long – you can do it!.

ACCESSORISE AND SHINE
I’m looking for wedding accessories for my bridesmaids, what items would you suggest? Accessories for your bridesmaids can vary massively and can come in all shapes and sizes, so it’s easy to get carried away or be entirely lost when it comes to buying pieces. I’d start by thinking about your bridesmaids’ attire on the day, your wedding colour/theme and of course, their individual styles. Necklaces, earrings, and bracelets tend to be the go-to. However, should you want a piece that is a little more outside the norm but equally fabulous, why not design a hair accessory or anklet? Bespoke accessories can be as simple as a single stone moissanite hair grip, a charm bracelet/anklet or as big and bold as your bridesmaids’ personalties! As with all gifts, we want to make sure they are bespoke to each person; this can be tricky with more than one bridesmaid. Nevertheless, by designing something classic, a small customisation such as a different gemstone colour or engraving can make them extra special. Bespoke pieces make the perfect bridal accessory and gift for your bridesmaids, that not only symbolises the day, but everlasting friendship. BIG-DAY BEAUTIFUL
My mum doesn’t normally wear makeup, but wants to look her best at my wedding. What look would you suggest? It’s lovely to give your mum the treat of having her make-up done professionally on your special day! To ensure mums are looking their best, I would say less is definitely more. The best features to focus on and draw attention to are the eyes. It’s ideal to use soft browns, plums and warm-nude shades around this area to enhance the eyes without being too dark. I always steer away from shimmer as this will emphasise any visible lines. Our eyelashes become fine as we age, so adding extra volume makes our eyes appear more youthful and opens up the eye area. Add a few false individual eyelashes on the outer edge of the eyes to achieve this look. Also, don’t forget the eyebrows! Use a powder or an eyebrow mascara to frame the face and again, less is more. The rest of the face should be kept fresh and dewy by using a moisturising foundation and cream blush – making sure to blend them thoroughly. It’s essential to use a small amount of setting powder to keep the makeup in place and avoid emphasising any fine lines. Try a moisturising lipstick or lip liner to finish off the look, which is slightly darker than your natural-lip colour. Adrienne Walton Hair and Makeup with Dren www.hairandmakeupwithdren.co.uk 74

A PASSION FOR FASHION
My bridesmaids are all curvy and want to show off their hourglass figures. What style of dress would work best for them? We find that A-line silhouettes look amazing on many body shapes, but we’re seeing that hour-glass figures benefit from fit-and-flair styles and opting for satin, sequin or Jersey fabrics are a great option. Here at Just Curves Bridal, we have our own personal label offering complete structure, flattering fits and internal corsetry – and why not stand out from other brides in one of our one-off patterned designs regardless of your size? THE BRIDE TRIBE
I’m looking for bespoke dresses for my bridesmaids, but I have no idea where to start. What advice can you share with me? When it comes to finding bespoke bridesmaid dresses, there are several places you can look to get started. I recommend searching online for inspiration or exploring local wedding-related Facebook groups and asking for dressmakers with experience designing and creating bridesmaid dresses. Ideally, the dressmaker should be centrally located between your bridesmaids so they can easily attend fitting appointments. The next step is to talk to your bridesmaids about what their preferred or least favourite physical attributes are – this should be considered. Task your bridesmaids with collecting a few images of evening gowns they usually wear from either Pinterest or magazine tear-outs and pin them to a foam board. This is a fun task that will certainly generate excitement! Take these boards along with ideas of your colour scheme and photos of your bridesmaids to a designer-dressmaker who can design subtle variations of a style to suit each bridesmaid. A good designer can unite the varied styles using the colour scheme and fabric selection to achieve a cohesive look. It’s important to note that making several made-to-measure dresses will take time and your bridesmaids need to arrange fittings into their schedules, so make sure to find a couturier as soon as possible in the planning stages. DRESSING THE BRIDAL PARTY
#TRENDING
www.gettyimages.co.uk
With wedding season officially back on, here’s my go-to guide for dressing your best girls, just be careful not to upstage the bride: ❤ Carrie Bradshaw eat your heart out! I’m a big Sex and the City fan and the television series returning to our screens this summer has inspired many dress designs. Think frothy tulle skirts and you get the idea – perfect for a chic-city wedding. Simply add a pair of Manolos! ❤ Grown-up pastels are the shades of the season with sage-green and soft -mauve dresses, a fashionable choice. ❤ Muted metallics are also hot hues to be seen in, from champagne and rose gold to silver-grey. ❤ Dress your flowergirls in cute candy shades with contrasting pastel posies to finish. ❤ Consider ombre bridesmaids’ dresses if your theme includes lots of colours. They are super-stylish and will help tie everything together. ❤ After a year of lockdown, gowns are more glamorous than ever, with fulllength styles featuring statement voluminous skirts. ❤ Statement sleeves are the fashion buzzword of the season and help to keep everyone feeling snug, especially if you intend on roasting marshmallows around a firepit. Pick a jacket or bolero with fluted or ruched sleeves. Claire Ridley | Fashion editor at County Wedding Magazine www.county.wedding

TREND SETTERS
I’m looking for a groom’s suit for my wedding, what’s currently on trend? After the effect of last year’s pandemic on the wedding industry, typical trends have taken a back seat as people are just so happy to finally be tying the knot! For those looking for big-day suit inspiration, you can’t go wrong with bold colourful suits or striking checked patterns – perfect for summer al fresco nuptials which will be oh-so popular this year and next. Colour palettes of blues, greens and reds – think berry tones – are the must-have suit hues, and the mix ‘n’ match ensemble is a trend that’s here to stay. If you’re not confident wearing something quite as standout as mentioned, bring these elements into your accessory choices: ties, waistcoats, pocket squares, socks and shoes! Ring-a-ding-ding County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey
L
ike many of you, I’m currently trying to plan my wedding during a global pandemic – there’s a sentence I never thought I’d say! My partner Dave and I have been together just under three years, and we’d talked about getting engaged a few times over the course of our relationship. My work colleagues were also giddy every time we went away thinking he would propose; after a fantastic trip to the Northern Lights and coming back ring-free none of us had any idea when it would be – but I kind of liked it that way! He had planned to propose last July but, due to COVID-19, his dreams of a romantic trip abroad were quashed. He had several backup
plans, all of which were ruined by lockdowns and restrictions, so in the end, he asked me in front of my family (virtually) on Christmas Day. It was a lovely moment, and we were both really excited and couldn’t wait to start planning.
PLAN, PLAN, PLAN! Having worked in the wedding industry for the last few years, I had a rough idea of where to start with the planning process. I’m highly organised and a big fan of making lists – there isn’t a folder in our house that isn’t colour coded, so the first thing I did was purchase a wedding planner to keep track of everything. I also looked through local wedding magazines, made a Pinterest board and joined a few Facebook groups, which are full of community spirit. Next, Dave and I sat down and made a list of the people we wanted to come to our wedding. A great rule we followed was to only invite people that we’d spoken to in the last six months. It might sound harsh, but we both have large extended families and were concerned it may quickly turn in to a big list of people who we don’t really know! We narrowed it down to 40 day guests and an additional 40 in the evening. Once we had the list, we were able to start focusing on the dreaded budget, which has been one of my least favourite parts of the process so far. We looked through guides online and overbudgeted for everything to ensure we don’t have any nasty surprises further down the line.
THE PERFECT SETTING After we had decided on our rough numbers and budget, we began the exciting part – looking 78
at venues. Due to the restrictions, this was a bit unconventional, with many properties only offering virtual viewings or only communicating via e-mail. Luckily, we managed to view our favourite venue in person the day before lockdown 3.0 began, and I’m so glad we did! We fell in love with it right away, and the staff have been amazing throughout the initial planning process. They were more than happy to answer all of our questions, in particular the dreaded COVID-19 related ones, and quickly set our minds at ease. It was exactly what we wanted with a gorgeous outdoor ceremony space and a barn area for the reception, perfect for our desired summer nuptials. We’re so excited to visit again, and for my mum, who is in full planning mode, to finally see it. Based on our venue’s advice we reserved the date, checked that our local council had a registrar available and once that was confirmed, we paid our deposit – yipee! I’ve since seen online a few brides who have booked their wedding but have been unable to secure a celebrant or registrar for their date. I’m thankful we followed the advice and checked first, it’s meant we have had a drama-free start to the wedding planning and are excited to see our plans unfold! Next issue, hear all about our plans for the food – my favourite bit – and finding our photographer!

BRIDE’S DIARY
Dave and I want quite a simple cake that’s full of delicious chocolate – yum! I love the idea of incorporating log slices throughout the day to add a rustic touch.
Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.
I adore macrame and have been learning how to do it in my spare time. We’re planning to make an arch to place behind us when we get married.
Our plan is to hire long wooden tables mixed with a few round versions.
Hanging lights are a popular trend that we’re thinking of using in our venue’s grounds.
We’ve decided on a sage green and blush pink colour scheme and want to incorporate lots of foliage.
Gold or rose gold cutlery is a must have!
This elegant envelope is exactly what we’re looking for. 79

Rafe says: My favourite part of any Jewish wedding is Israeli dancing, a prelude to the wedding breakfast and speeches. Couples are thrown around all over the place and are usually drenched in sweat by the time they finally sit down for their starters! My experience capturing these scenes means I can anticipate what will happen next and position myself in the best position. Here at Offley Place Country House Hotel, Chris was framed suspended in mid-air for a brief moment.
Howard says: This image is special to me as it was captured at the start of my journey of becoming a wedding photographer. The photo is from a styled shoot which gave me the opportunity to shoot a couple in a relaxed and learning environment. The image helped to get me initial bookings and my business grew from there!
ANGELS WITH DIRTY FACES PHOTOGRAPHY
3A PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEO Antony says: On a freezing night in September, I created a classic Hollywood moment by making full use of the iconic Pinewood Studios neon sign. Lying on my belly to achieve the angle, I used two off-camera flashes for dramatic effect and the result is stunning. 82

Denise says: This was a completely impromptu picture taken as the bridal party sheltered from the rain. I always try to keep group shots relaxed and informal and this one just came together perfectly and is full of personality.
AMY MURPHY PHOTOGRAPHY Amy says: This is one of my favourite images ever and it features bride Nadine looking out over the beautiful gardens at Madingley Hall. At the time of this image, the bride was battling terminal cancer, which was a fight she sadly lost in May, 2019 – heaven is a richer place with her there.

Denise says: I adore this natural and beautiful moment I captured of a bride and her grandmother. The emotion from the grandmother as she squeezes her granddaughter is the focus of the image, a moment that could have gone undocumented.
Howard says: It’s not often you see pets at weddings and I was amazed to see this couple bring not just their dogs, but their horse as well! This image sums up the tricky job of getting humans and animals to pose together – I’m hoping to see more pets at weddings in the future!

Amy says: This simple photograph encapsulates that love is love no matter what your sexual orientation is, your gender, skin colour or religion. Taken at my first same-sex wedding in 2019, I was so welcomed by everyone there and the day was full of happy memories!

For me, it was the constant failure of Rorie in a hand-held mirror as she gets ready for her wedding. This and Gemma attempting the look that really made this image. The image was timed photo captures the first time she sees herself with her hair and deliberately so the natural light from the windows lit the scene beautifully. make-up complete, wearing her tiara like a fairytale princess and reflecting on the day ahead.
Rafe says: There are first dances and there’s Jack and Rosie’s first dance at South Farm in February, 2019. Luckily, you couldn’t hear the sound of Jack’s trousers shredding over the band’s music. Only by setting up my lighting in such a certain way can I ensure these special moments aren’t missed.

Denise says: I adore how thrilled to bits this couple is to be married. The happiness on their faces makes me smile every time I see this photo, and their connection with each other is so sweet, genuine and authentic.
Denise says: This is a faceless picture that says so much to me. I love how the groom has completely buried his head as he holds the bride tightly. It feels like a private moment between the two of them and is a true expression of love.
Amy says: After a day of thunderstorms and heavy rain, Gina, Paul and I managed to take a few moments away from guests and capture a beautiful image just as the clouds were breaking and the evening sun started to shine through. Antony says: In this fun photo, the bridal party is running away from the jaws of a tyrannosaurus rex – the most feared dinosaurs of all. The couple and I came up with the idea together to create a scene that would amaze and amuse guests for years to come.
Antony says: They say a picture tells a thousand words and this is certainly the case with this photo where family and friends stand in the shape of a heart with the couple in the middle. It’s a striking image and perfectly represents a wedding day – two people surrounded by love.
