Quirky venue – check, sunset – check, newlyweds in love – check: couple photography at its finest!

Bride Hannah is a huge fan of Tudor history, so tying the knot at the fascinating Penshurst Place, Henry VIII’s former hunting lodge, was a dream come true.

EDITORIAL 01376 535 611 Kelly Andrews | Senior Editor and Beauty Editor kellya@county.wedding Danielle Harvey | Managing Editor, Grooms Editor and Travel Editor Claire Ridley | Fashion Editor Melissa Barker | Contributing Editor

t dawned on me just recently that I have just six months left until I transform from editor into bridesmaid extraordinaire! Is anyone else freaked out by how quickly time passes en route to W-day? Despite spending my days telling all of you lovely people how to plan, I have very much not practised what I’ve preached and am now panicking about getting into shape. So, it’s a good job indeed that I’m not the bride, who fortunately is literally the most organised person I’ve ever met. That being said, the bride tribe (plus groom) recently decided to hit a wedding show at the venue-to-be hosted by our sister company County Wedding Events, looking for finishing touches and bridesmaid dresses. While I’ve attended many a wedding fair in my time with my professional hat on, nothing beats the excitement of experiencing one from the other side of the fence. So, to help you get the most out of your next visit to a wedding fair, I’ve compiled my top five tips. 1. Pre-register. Make sure you sign up on the organisers website. CWE is offering timed entry slots at the moment to keep you all safe and allow you to enjoy your browsing comfortably. 2. Be prepared. Find out who’s exhibiting beforehand and make up a hit list of the suppliers you want to check out. You can usually find this info on the event’s website, but if not there’ll likely be show guide available, so grab one when you arrive and settle down with a cuppa or glass of bubbly before you venture any further. 3. Fashion shows. These are not to be missed in our book. Seeing the latest designs on an actual human, as opposed to on the hanger, can give you a whole new perspective along with tons of ideas. 4. Show and tell. If you’re already at the point where you know your theme, colour palette and venue, it’s a good idea to take your mood board along with you. If you find a supplier you’re keen to work with, it’ll really help them to get a peek at this to get their creative juices flowing. 5. Snap happy. Make sure your smart phone is fully charged and be ready to get as many pics as you can of the things you love. Big events can be a little daunting and the last thing you want is to get home and forget where you saw that incredible cake. And now, without further ado, I bring you the latest issue of Your Kent Wedding. Check out these pages for my issue highlights to ensure you don’t miss a thing – we have a world of wedspiration waiting for you as always. Enjoy and keeeep planning!

47 I’m loving real bride Emma’s bridal jacket, which she slipped into for her drinks reception. Perfect to keep out the chill at this time of year and super-cool to boot!

I caught up with wellness expert Simone Thomas, who had plenty of wisdom to share when it comes to feeling tip top for your big day.

95

Shoot coordinator Annie Robinson told us that the decision to feature two brides was based on fashion. “I already had a dress lined up and had my heart set on it, so when a designer approached me to use their new bridal pant suit, I thought: ‘why not go for two brides?’ The outfit is different and striking with a veil that attaches at the waist,” she explains.

We gathered together Kent’s bridal boutiques, make-up artists and jewellery specialists to tell us what’s hot for 2022, ensuring you’re ready to feel your bigday best. I’m in love with Luna by Abella Bridal – Victoria Elaine Bridal’s dress pick for the new year.

SHOWSTOPPING WEDDING FEASTS

Seasoned, a wedding and events specialist caterer, has landed a two-year deal to provide catering services at the stunning Penshurst Place and Gardens. The 14th-century manor house, once the property of King Henry VIII, features Tudor banqueting rooms and the Seasoned team will be working with couples to offer bespoke menus with personalised service options befitting the grand setting. Colin Sayers, managing partner at Seasoned, says, “When you have a location as extraordinary as this, the food has to be fantastic, it needs to replicate its surroundings – a special menu for a special venue.” For four decades the expert team have mastered their craft using fresh, locally sourced, seasonal ingredients to deliver exceptional food across their innovative Michelin-inspired menus. Signature dishes include orange-zested duck breast, confit leg Kiev, Jerusalem artichoke pithivier, sweet potato puree and wilted spinach. NEW VENUE ALERT!

Newly-licensed Kent venue Fort Burgoyne is now welcoming wedding bookings. The venue will be working with venue stylists Diamond Circle Weddings to offer bespoke ceremonies and receptions to couples waiting to walk down the aisle. It offers a choice of several spaces to tie the knot with options to say “I do” inside in the ceremony room, or al fresco overlooking Dover Castle in the Shooting Gallery or on the Parade Ground. Each wedding can be tailored to your individual wants, needs and dreams and, depending on the style you’re looking for, you can enjoy anything from a luxury afternoon tea as part of a large celebration or an intimate ceremony overlooking the grounds. YOUR ESSENTIALS NEW HOME

The team at Victoria Grace Bridal were superbusy during the last lockdown, moving to a new home. While they loved their previous premises in Faversham, they ultimately decided that the popular boutique had outgrown the location and the time had come to move to a bigger shop. Happily, the perfect spot in Burgate, Canterbury, presented itself and was able to maintain the same warm and relaxed feel the Faversham boutique had. The new look Victoria Grace Bridal finally threw open its doors on 12th April, with no less than two appointment rooms available for you to experience with your entourage as you enjoy refreshments and decide on your dream dress. It now stocks even more stunning gowns by Essense of Australia, Kenneth Winston, Ella Rosa and Victoria Kay, plus two curvy collections, meaning there’s something for everyone to try. BEACHY BAKES

Cakes By The Sea is a creative cake studio based on the Kent coast, in Broadstairs. The company is the culmination of owner Julie’s dream to move to the seaside for a new career outside of her corporate finance background. She recently put together a styled shoot to showcase her passion for her bakes as well as her location and we’re loving the results. Julie tells us, “I love our beautiful coastline and wanted to produce a shoot that showcased a gorgeous four-tier wedding cake, which blended into its surroundings. I love sage green too and so I reflected this in the decoration and chose a bottom marbled tier with highlights in the dried-flowers. The green works beautifully against the colour of the seaweed on the rocks.” Find out more at https://cakes-by-the-sea.co.uk. Other suppliers, involved in capturing these images on location in Botany Bay were: www.tonypullenphotography.co.uk, https://bayweddingprops.co.uk, and model Ellie Fox.

Tie the knot in a local hotspot

01227 903 533 | https://citywalltower.com

City Wall Tower is a Grade II listed English Heritage building, formerly called Zoar Chapel, meaning small chapel. Absolutely brimming with history, it’s a Medieval battle tower built into the city wall and the foundations are thought to date from around 1140, with the rest of the building dating from the late 14th century. During the 18th and 19th centuries huge parts of the city wall were demolished as Canterbury grew, but the little chapel survived. Even when German bombing caused further damage during the Second World War, it remained intact. So, you could argue that it should have been renamed The Lucky Chapel! This is also where the famous and highly regarded Edmund Reed, the police officer who oversaw the Jack the Ripper investigation, tied the knot.

Scan to view video

THE “I DOS” City Wall Tower is a dry hire venue, meaning you have a blank canvas on which to create your dream wedding. It’s licensed for civil ceremonies and can host 80 of your nearest and dearest, plus the wedding party. Located on Burgate Lane, it boasts two small, paved outdoor courtyards, ideal for photos and post-ceremony mingling. THE CELEBRATIONS While this is a ceremony only venue, there’s no shortage of options for your reception, as the Chapel is conveniently located in the city centre, walking distance from literally hundreds of restaurants, pubs and other unique spots. Although, you can opt to upgrade your hire to include a glass of bubbly and canapés following your ceremony, which is well worth doing before you head off. What’s more, if you need any help choosing a reception venue, the Chapel’s wedding and event planners will be more than happy to take that stress away from you. THERE’S MORE There are several packages of extras offering you as much or as little help with your big day as you wish. These include services such as venue styling, organising wedding suppliers, reception and meal packages, transport, accommodation booking and organising tours and trips. 19

BROOME PARK HOTEL

01227 832 701 | www.broomepark.co.uk Built in 1635, Broome Park Hotel offers a Grade I listed mansion-house setting in the heart of South East Kent. Situated in Canterbury, it’s set amongst no less than 250 acres of grounds, which feature a professional golf course. The site is also home to ample guest accommodation in the shape of 14 lodges and 19 hotel rooms, the interiors of which reflect the traditional character of the property. THE “I DOS” The Italian Gardens offer a stunning spot for al fresco “I dos” and boast original 19th-century features including an original archway where you can exchange your vows with 120 of your nearest and dearest looking on.

SANDS HOTEL

01843 317 004 | www.sandshotelmargate.co.uk Sands Hotel boasts 20 luxury en suite bedrooms, as well as the Bay Restaurant, cocktail bar and an ice cream parlour. We love the design and décor, inspired by the open skies, glowing sands and glistening seas of its seaside location. THE “I DOS” The Terrace Suite and the Bay Restaurant are licensed for ceremonies, with space for 70 loved ones. As you enter the former, you’ll instantly notice the floor-to-ceiling windows, which overlook the stunning Margate Sands providing a glorious backdrop as you exchange your vows. 20

If you prefer to wed indoors the Georgian Room is a characterful spot complete with original features from the era of previous owner, Lord Kitchener including high ceilings and a large bay window. It too can host 120 for the ceremony before transforming into your reception space for 80 at a seated wedding breakfast and 100 for the evening bash. THE CELEBRATIONS Finally, the marquee located in the grounds overlooks the Kentish countryside with the mansion house also in full view. It can accommodate 150 for the wedding breakfast and 200 for the evening reception. THERE’S MORE! A complimentary menu tasting is included in two of the four wedding packages and an overnight stay for the newlyweds is always a feature.

THE CELEBRATIONS There’s a wonderful rooftop terrace, which offers a bird’s-eye view of Margate’s attractions and the dramatic sunsets – it offers an idyllic spot for reception drinks. You’ll then head back into The Terrace Suite or Bay Restaurant for your reception. The Terrace can accommodate up to 56 for your wedding breakfast and 80 for the evening. The room has its own private bathroom facilities as well as a bar. The Bay Restaurant on the other hand can host slightly larger events – 62 for the meal and 150 for the big bash. THERE’S MORE The hotel is available for exclusive hire, so it can all be yours for your special day, accessible to you and your loved ones only. We round up Kent’s coolest quirky and unusual wedding venues

Shrouded in romance and history, Dode’s church offers the opportunity for something truly different. A beautiful Norman building, looking almost exactly as it did 900 years ago, with straw covering the floor and candles lighting the scene, its atmosphere is palpable. The church has been silently standing guard over the lost village for centuries and is a wonderfully appropriate place to celebrate the joy of marriage. Overlooking the valley, the grounds, which feature two acres of meadow with small village pond and stone circle, invoke memories of times past. Plus, tucked away below the church are two 16th-century style retreat cottages constructed in English oak where you can enjoy your morning preparations and stay on the wedding night.

Dode Church is the perfect spot for you if you’re looking for a ceremony where tradition, intimacy and a link to the romance of the past are the main components. Say “I do” beneath the oak ceiling looking down on simple benches covered with warming rugs where your nearest and dearest gather. Following the vows, you’re welcome to take photographs in the grounds before returning to the church, which will have been transformed into a Medieval banquet hall for your wedding breakfast and evening of dancing and merriment. The venue can accommodate 42 all day. Dode provides a free wedding rehearsal and a complimentary menutasting session if you’re using the in-house caterers. You’re also welcomed back after your big day to attend various events, and can even hold a renewal handfasting ceremony. WE LOVE The minstrels gallery offers a dramatic touch of theatre with space for musicians and photographers alike.

Turner Contemporary’s distinctive modern architecture makes it one of the most recognisable buildings in Kent. Located on the edge of the harbour it has wide sweeping views across the beach, capturing the famous Margate sunset from the terrace and balcony. The hire spaces are white minimalist rooms with high ceilings, natural concrete floors and huge windows taking in the panoramic seascape. There’s ample scope for embellishment, but very little décor is needed to make your wedding setting stylish and impactful. There’s an outdoor terrace to the side of the main cafe, perfect for drinks receptions. Plus, the wide private balcony overlooking the sea, runs the full length of the venue, allowing guests to take the party outside. Ceremonies witnessed by up to 110 loved ones take place in The Clore Learning Studio facing the window, which provides an incredible view of

the scene beyond. The Foyle Rooms too can play host to the “I dos” when the former isn’t available, with a slightly larger capacity of 120. Mainly used for receptions though, the space is bright and boasts high ceilings, from which you can choose to suspend hanging floral installations. There’s a projector for speech slideshows and blank walls for decorating with photographs. The room can be set up with round or long tables and white chairs complete the picture. After the wedding breakfast it can be turned around for evening dancing as guests mingle in the gallery for drinks. The Sunley Gallery is available to you once the gallery has closed to the public and offers beautiful sea views for you and 180 guests to enjoy. Here, the venue team can set up a bar and entertainment as requested.

Alternatively, the magical Juliana’s Island offers you the chance to say “I do” beneath a romantic Regency pergoda surrounded by water against the Georgian backdrop of Preston Court itself. It has a capacity of 120. Finally, there’s 26

the enchanting fully-decked 17th-century Kentish Barn, which can seat 120. You can even have the Duwyn organ played, which sounds incredible! The Barn too is the ideal spot to celebrate your first meal together as newlyweds. The huge floor-to-eve doors open right up onto the southfacing barnyard allowing the sunshine to flood in. What’s more, the venue’s two Art Deco organs stand proudly at either end, and a giant Victorian wooden peacock hovers above the stage. The space can accommodate 120 of your nearest and dearest. WE LOVE The marquee reception setting has an exposed wall showing off the historical stonework of the Priory and also boasts a stunning Louis XV-style chandelier.

https://peterreynoldsphotography.com

Steeped in history, the Priory was built in 1253 for the canons regular of St Augustine’s in a French style of the period and this grand monastic building retains its Medieval structure, created from Kentish ragstone. Now a Grade I listed heritage building, it once provided hospitality for travellers and pilgrims on their journey to Canterbury. Alongside, the marquee is situated over what remains of the old cloisters. Set amongst seven acres of mature landscaped gardens and surrounded by a moat, the Priory offers a paradise for your wedding photographer. Plus, its secluded rural position provides an exclusive setting that’s off the beaten track yet still just 15 minutes from the major travel hub of Ashford. The Grand Ceremony Room is an oak and stone hall, once the rectory for the black canons. It can seat 100 guests for the ceremony with space for a musical quartet. Meanwhile, The Conservatory is a bright space connected to the Edwardian manor house and accessed via the private

garden. Surrounded by the moat it overlooks ancient woodlands with stunning views over Romney Marsh. It can play host to 50 for the “I dos.” Finally for the vows, is the garden’s ceremony area, which is focused on a chess-board gazebo and surrounded by mature trees and shrubs. It can seat up to 120. Receptions for 150 guests are hosted in the marquee, and evening entertainment takes place in the adjacent Chapter Room complete with bar and dancefloor. The west wing of the manor is offered to wedding parties wishing to prepare on site. The private bathroom still has its original Edwardian features and the four-poster bedroom is blessed with wonderful views. Post celebrations there are four rooms available on a bed and breakfast basis.

Making history

Hannah and James’ elegant wedding was sympathetically styled to suit its historical setting Images courtesy of Shot by Bek

REAL WEDDINGS

annah and James met in the oh-so modern way – online. When they met for the first time, it was clear the match was one made in Heaven. Hannah tells us, “James is everything I was looking for: caring, chatty, good family values, ambitious yet grounded, plus he dressed really well!” While James says of his first impressions, “Hannah is beautiful and we have a lot in common, including our outlook on life. So you could say it was love at first swipe.” The proposal was quite spectacular, as James popped the question at the top of Mount Etna, while holidaying together in Sicily. Hannah explains, “Italy is, and always will be, a special place for us, as we went to Rome together early on in our relationship.” Later that weekend, the volcano erupted. We like to think that was its celebratory gesture! The couple love to visit historical sites in their free time and Hannah in particular has always been fascinated by the Tudor history in Kent, all of which made Penshurst Place a dream location for them. “It’s breathtaking – the scale of the grand building, the manicured gardens and not forgetting the 14thcentury Barons Hall filled with suits of armour, which reminded us of Harry Potter or Game of Thrones! What stood out most though was the banqueting team. They were all so friendly and organised. Knowing they’d be there on the day was a key deciding factor for us,” Hannah shares. The date was set for 24th July, 2021. Read on as the bride reminisces with us about the couple’s stunning big day...

SETTING THE SCENE Opting for a historical setting meant that the duo didn’t need to worry too much about an abundance of decoration, as the tapestries, paintings, armour and 14th-century chestnut-beamed ceiling took care of that for them. So as not to overshadow or crowd the place they chose an elegantly subtle palette of black and white, with a hint of blush. They had originally booked the wedding for October 2020 with a vision of a cosy autumn day surrounded by crackling fires, foliage and candles. The second date was May, so Hannah spoke to the florist about peonies, as Penshurst had them growing in the gardens. But with the third and eventual date being July, they were now styling a summer wedding. The flowers were a huge part of this and they had in mind an English country garden feel with ivory roses and silver/green eucalyptus. The florist also suggested a blush-hued rose called Quicksand that would complement the venue beautifully, so that too was incorporated and much admired by guests throughout the day. Two large urns were placed either side of the window where the pair said their vows, there was a display too on the table for signing the register, and a long arrangement for the top table, as well as centrepieces for each guest table. These were created using black candelabras with ivory pillar candles. Since the ceiling is so high in the Baron’s Hall, the tall table centres worked perfectly. Hannah says, “Apart from a couple of spotlights the Hall is only lit by candlelight, which lent the most amazing atmosphere to the evening reception. It felt like a royal banquet!” The venue kindly supplied metal easels to hold the orderof-the-day and table plan, both of which were designed in traditional script to suit the site’s Tudor heritage. Place names were hand-calligraphed on white card as were the table numbers, which were supported by mini white wooden easels. Plus, a further nod to the Tudors was made via the menus, which boasted a small white tassel each. With such a grand location the pair knew they ought to have a big-day bake to match and opted for a five-tier showstopper. Hannah is a huge cake fan and wanted different flavours for 35

REAL WEDDINGS each tier, including lemon and elderflower, chocolate and sea salt, and Victoria sponge. It was adorned in royal icing with sugar paste ruffles and hand-piped pearls. Penshurst’s recommended caterer, Seasoned Events, took care of everything from the drinks reception and canapés to the three-course wedding breakfast and the evening bar. The menu featured a matcha chicken and Parma ham starter, followed by a sea bass and vegetable main, and a Kentish strawberry trio of strawberry and basil cheesecake, strawberry macaroon and mini Eton mess.

LOOKING THE PART Hannah searched high and low, but couldn’t find the perfect wedding dress for her and eventually went for a custom gown. She explains, “The style was more important to me than the designer label, so I chose a backless fitted ivory lace dress with satin-covered buttons down the back and a big bow, which I tied around my waist. It had a slight train and I loved the scalloped lace edge along the bottom.” The bride wore her hair in a beautiful chignon bun complete with delicate pearl hairpins. James had always dreamed of wearing black tie for the big day and found the perfect tux and dress shirt at Reiss. He finished the look with black leather monk shoes from Joseph Cheaney and his bride was very impressed indeed that he managed to tie his bow tie himself! His dapper Hackett waistcoat set him apart from his groomsmen. The beautiful bridesmaids wore long blush pink dresses with dove grey feather boleros for the ceremony.

TIME TO CELEBRATE The Penshurst String Quartet performed as loved ones arrived, during the ceremony and at the drinks reception, which seemed to be in perfect keeping with the history of the venue. Hannah shares, “They were fantastic and played a mix of classic and modern songs. Our guests commented that they felt as though they were in the Netflix series Bridgerton!” The newlyweds’ shared a first dance to Etta James’ At Last as their nearest and dearest looked on. Indeed, the song couldn’t be more fitting for a third wedding date.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

On the day we tried to remember that it was all about us as a couple and didn’t leave each other’s sides.

After two postponed dates due to Covid and nine months of waiting, the couple were both incredibly excited to finally get married, and had the honour of being the venue’s first Saturday wedding following the easing of restrictions from 19th July. “We felt extremely lucky that we could welcome all 70 of our guests without the need for masks, as well as having a DJ and dancefloor for our reception,” Hannah says. The bride continues, “After nearly two years of planning, seeing our vision and dream day come to life, as well as seeing our guests enjoy it was truly special. Some of them hadn’t seen each other in months, so it was a real reminder of how important weddings and special occasions like this are in bringing everyone together.” Hannah smiles as she remembers a couple of comical incidents from the morning: “The mother-of-the-bride made us late! She was the last person to get ready making it a rush to get to the venue. Our guests were waiting in the ceremony room for about 45 minutes. Then my sister, one of my bridesmaids, stepped on my veil on more than one occasion as we walked down the aisle. I can tell you she got the death stare from the bride!” 37

REAL WEDDINGS Daisy and Keith shared a wonderfully intimate wedding day at Westenhanger Castle Images courtesy of Fleur Challis Photography

issatisfied with her singledom Daisy’s friends got hold of her phone one evening and signed her up for Tinder, before liking everyone on there. Fortunately, what could have gone so wrong, ended up so right when she came across Keith’s profile while deleting her matches. The two sent a few initial messages back and forth, and then agreed to meet up at a local wine bar – they’ve never looked back. Daisy says, “We couldn’t stop talking! I loved his Irish accent, sense of humour and blue eyes. He loved my confidence and creative side.” While the duo had planned to go to Hever Hotel for the weekend of their fourth anniversary, the pandemic had other ideas. Instead Keith decorated the kitchen with candles and laid the table for a delicious three-course meal, which he prepared with his own fair hands. They spent a perfect evening celebrating this milestone in their relationship, as they chatted, listened to music and reminisced about their years together so far. “It was time for dessert and Keith asked me to close my eyes. When I opened them I saw a jewellery box surrounded by chocolates, which I thought was an anniversary gift. Much to my surprise, it was an engagement ring.” The groom-to-be got down on one knee and asked her to marry him, Daisy accepted through tears of joy. The pair dreamed of an intimate wedding day and discovered Kent-based company, E-lope who specialise in such a thing. They fell in love with the idea of tying the knot al fresco, beneath Westenhanger Castle’s thatched gazebo; and while the occasion was tinged with regret that Keith’s family wouldn’t be able to make the trip from Ireland due to Covid, they still wanted the day to be super-special. Our jaws hit the floor when we first saw these images, so we hope you’ll join us as bride Daisy tells us more about their oh-so romantic big day – 14th April, 2021...

I wore the Poppy Embroidered Wedding Dress from Phase Eight along with embellished bridal blockheel sandals. I accessorised with D and T initial pendants from Tiffany & Co. The T is for Tracey, my mum, so I could have her with me on my wedding day.

We were both very calm before the ceremony. We were excited to get married and I felt so happy when I caught sight of Keith standing at the altar. The second I heard our song, A Thousand Years by Christina Perri, I felt a rush. It was so emotional. I’d recommend taking your time to walk down the aisle. It’s a beautiful moment to take everything in. As we said our vows we were in our own bubble, just us and our two witnesses. We could focus solely on each other and enjoy every moment.

Keith wore a light grey suit with a blush rose buttonhole and Irish coin cufflinks. 42

REAL WEDDINGS

Keith burst out laughing during the vows, as he was trying incredibly hard not to say, “awful wedded wife,” from one of our favourite films Four Weddings and a Funeral.

Our delicious cake was lemon flavour with elderflower buttercream, it was topped with a dramatic macaron tower.

Our styling involved a Parisian-style vibe including madame and monsieur signs, flowers, a chandelier, candles, a pastel pink and blue tablescape and blankets.

Our wedding breakfast was an afternoon tea. As we sat down we heard tweeting noises followed by a series of thumps coming from behind us. Some little ducklings had hatched and were leaving the nest for the first time from the roof of the gazebo. They were so cute! 43

The E-lope team were amazing, they made sure we had everything we needed and made the day extra special. Our photographer Fleur Challis was fantastic too and made us feel completely relaxed. She knew the venue really well and captured our day with some beautiful photographs around the castle gardens.

Don’t worry about what everyone else will think or say – do what’s best for the both of you. Remember, the reason you’re getting married. Your day should be a celebration of your love for one another. Looking back, we had the best day, it was so romantic and special, just the two of us. I wouldn’t do it any other way.

We couldn’t go on honeymoon, so after the wedding we drove to Hythe beach where we enjoyed a romantic stroll as we took in the sunset. Before heading home, we saw signs for crazy golf, which has always been our thing. We thought it would be hilarious to play a game in our wedding attire. It was so much fun with everyone staring at us and asking questions. Since then, we’ve been to the Cotswolds on minimoon. We were so lucky with the weather and thoroughly enjoyed exploring the gorgeous countryside near Chipping Norton.

Perfect day REAL WEDDING

Emma and Thomas’ springtime nuptials were styled using an elegant palette of rose gold Images courtesy of Parkershots

T

om proposed to Emma the morning they arrived in Mexico for a holiday in September 2018, which came as a surprise to her since they’d been together for 10 years and were childhood sweethearts. A random bag search at the airport almost scuppered Tom’s plans though, as he looked on worrying the ring would be found and that he’d have to get down on one knee in that rather less than romantic setting! Join us as the bride gives us the lowdown on 19th April 2021 – the big day...

47

47

I’m really into history, so we both knew we wanted a beautiful historical venue to be married in.

We had to reduce our guest list due to Covid, but this allowed us to have two beautiful blossom trees in our ceremony room, which we got married beneath. We couldn’t have had these originally as the seating plan wouldn’t have allowed enough room for them, or the harpist! 48

REAL WEDDING

I wore a Milly May Bridal gown from Molly Dolly Bridal Boutique. It was only the second one I tried on and I loved it. Following a floral theme, the detail on the dress was a lacey leaf vine pattern, which matched our custom-design wedding rings – so I had to have it!

I chose flowers in orange and pink tones to complement our rose gold theme.

We just wanted to get married and move on with our lives. We’d already waited nearly an extra year and wanted to put an end to all the postponement and money worries.

Thomas and his dad wore matching suits, which they chose together.

We wanted a natural-looking cake, so it made sense for it to be displayed on a log stand with a selection of fresh flowers. 49

My bridesmaid looked beautiful in a blush and rose gold sequinned dresses from Maya at ASOS. Covid restrictions meant we couldn’t have a full reception, but after the ceremony we all enjoyed some drinks together and served our cake.

Being with my immediate family members and having such a small wedding made the day that much more memorable.

We plan to have a large party in the future that all of our nearest and dearest can be part of.

We had to cancel two dates planned in 2020, so by our third date, 19th April 2021, we said we’d definitely go ahead as long as we were permitted to, even if it meant we could only have six guests. Eventually we were allowed to have 13, plus the two of us. There was so much stress and uncertainty leading up to the April date though, as the government guidelines weren’t at all clear.

Try to take it all in and be sure to spare a moment to step back and enjoy every moment. It really does go so fast.

S

howcasing the best of Britain with a ton of bright colours, native flowers, pom poms and balloons this local shoot is a whole heap of fun! At the time it was British Flowers Week, which was perfect timing as photographer and shoot coordinator Petrina Reynolds, had a vibrant floral theme in mind. “We’ve all had a rough time with Covid so I wanted to go for something uplifting,” she tells us. So, gathering together as many Kentish suppliers as she could, along with real-couple models and super-cute flowergirls, she set off for beautiful Broome Park. “The team really pulled together and came up with everything I’d imagined and more. Even the British weather couldn’t dampen the fun,” Petrina concludes.

The benefits of having a professional wedding planner at the helm of your wedding can never be underestimated Images courtesy of Emily Brown Photography

M

y inspiration for this project came while contemplating how to convince couples that using a wedding planner is a good idea,” says shoot coordinator Annie Robinson of AnnieV. She tells us, “Few people appreciate when they embark on their journey, the sheer amount of time and work that goes into planning, organising and running a wedding. From sourcing good, reliable and trustworthy suppliers to locating venues, not to mention all the minutiae and stress of running around on the day itself. Many have said, after the fact, that they wished they’d had a wedding planner!” So, what better way to make this point than by illustrating just how showstopping a big day can be once a professional hand is in involved in the planning? After all, some things have to be seen to be believed! When Annie started talking about the concept she was met with huge interest from other local suppliers who were loving the idea and clamouring to be involved. It was then that a further theme began to emerge: sustainability. This is a subject close to Annie’s heart and an approach that, unless you’re an expert, could be tricky to successfully pull off unaided. Everything was coming together like a dream! The green team was soon assembled and included a stylist with repurposed props, a rustic barn venue that’d been brought back to life, a photographer who plants a tree for each bride and groom she captures, a handmade macramé arch, a ring-maker who resets preloved jewellery into new designs, a gown from a boutique offering pre-owned dresses, and a make-up artist who uses only cruelty-free and vegan-friendly products. We don’t know about you, but we’re convinced!

HOW NOT TO: The team had such a blast showing couples how great their big day can be with professional assistance that they decided to go one step further and show how awful it could be without! Annie says, “We were positively comedic in our approach and swung hard in the opposite direction, introducing heavy make-up, ill-fitting outfits and floppy stationery.” Check out the team’s super-fun how not to guide over at www.yourkent.wedding/news-headlines

Memorable moments

County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

READY, SET, POSE!

68

www.chrisblackledg ephotography.co.uk

Dave and I were unsure if we wanted to book a pre-wedding shoot as we don’t like our picture being taken and can be quite awkward in front of the camera. I spoke to a few of our married friends and they all recommended booking a shoot, so we decided to go for it. As we got engaged during the last lockdown, we had only met our photographer once over Skype, so we felt the shoot would also be a good way of getting to know him better ready for our big day. We’d arranged to meet on a beach in Kent, and as I’m sure you can tell from the pictures, it was extremely blustery and cold, so much so we were convinced we would appear blue

in the final shots! Although it wasn’t the perfect weather conditions, the combination of our windswept appearence – my hair must have looked like Medusa – onlookers and relaxed nature of our photographer made the shoot fun! I was very nervous beforehand, changing my outfit 10 times much to Dave’s annoyance, but once we were there we both felt at ease and had a great time. If you’re debating booking a shoot, I’d highly recommend it.

ACCESSORISE AND SHINE Wedding planning has been pretty straightforward overall, but when it came to choosing my accessories, I felt very overwhelmed. I wouldn’t describe myself as particularly girly, but I wanted something that would make me look beautiful on the day without being overpowering. After hours of shopping, I surprised myself by discovering I have a hidden love for pearls, so when I came across a pearl and floral hair clip, I just knew that I had to have it! I’m planning to finish my look with a pair of pearl earrings and a pendant necklace. My shoes have also been difficult. I’m 5ft 2ins and Dave is more than 6ft tall, so I was debating whether to wear heels to make the height difference less apparent. All the heels that I loved were really expensive and I was beginning to have nightmares about falling over as I walked down the aisle – I’m not the most gracious person even in flats! So, after looking at countless websites and going into what feels like every shoe shop in Essex, I finally decided to embrace my height and purchased a pair of glittery trainers with satin laces from Kate Spade. Although different to what I had orginally envisaged, I think the look suits my dress and it’s made me feel more relaxed knowing I won’t be going to A&E on the big day. Lastly, Dave and I went ring shopping – a traditonal wedding element we still wanted

for our nuptials. When we arrived at the jewellers, which was the same branch that Dave purchased my engagement ring from, I was pleasantly surprised to learn they had a matching wedding ring that I, of course, had to have. Luckily we are months ahead of our wedding, however we were made aware that some ring designs can take up to four months to arrive in the store – take note readers that are planning last-minute ‘I dos’! Dave never wears jewellery, so he was unsure of what style he wanted and all of the different types of metal and cuts were quite overwhelming for him. After doing some research and asking our friends for their opinions, he decided on a plain platinum band that looks great. Make sure you check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing our search for the perfect entertainment.

his year has flown by, can you believe it’s nearly Christmas? It’s starting to dawn on me that this is my last as a Miss – eek – and July will creep around quickly so the countdown is officially on! My fiancé, Dave, and I have booked most of our suppliers including the venue, photographer and florist and I’ve even found my dress – but there’s still plenty to do! We’re getting really excited as the day draws closer, and the more I write about all of your beautiful weddings, the more real it seems that we will have our very own wedding day. In this issue, read all about our pre-wedding shoot and my search for the perfect accessories.

Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.

BRIDE’S DIARY

We’ve ordered wooden cutouts of our guests’ names to be used as place names. They look really cute and double up as favours.

Originally, we didn’t want light-up letters, but after seeing a set-up at one of our venue’s wedding shows, we loved the look and have hired them.

Dave and I have purchased an oak direction sign that will greet our guests as they enter our venue.

Although I was against the idea of wearing a veil, I tried one on with my dress and fell in love.

We came across a local company that creates personalised cake toppers, so we’ve decided to order one with figures of us and our cat.

Our venue offers guests a choice of ribbons when they enter the venue, pink if they want people to keep their distance, green if they’re comfortable to shake hands and blue if they are happy to hug. I think it’s a great way of making sure that everyone feels happy and safe on the day.

We’re planning to buy personalised cufflinks for Dave and his best man.

I love this buttonhole wrapped in twine and am going to ask our florist if she can do the same.

For our tables, we’re purchased concrete planters that are shaped like characters from our favourite films and tv shows to add a personal touch to the day. 69

EXPERT ADVICE

HOT TOPIC Stellar wedmin advice from those in the know

WINTER WONDERLAND

I’ve always dreamed of a winter wedding and the venue is booked for December. How can I style it tastefully to reflect the season with a touch of class? Oh, we do love a winter wedding! For December nuptials most venues will have a Christmas tree set up, so it would be great to incorporate that into your staging by sitting your big-day bake next to it. Taking inspiration from the tree and the season, let’s go for whites to reflect the crisp weather at this time of year. Utilise lots of foliage in the flower arrangements and various shades of grey will bring the outside in. Plus, silver embellishments will add a sparkle or two – after all, you can never have too much bling! If there’s an open fireplace at your venue, why not make the most of it

and heat up the space with crackling cedar logs and cinnamon sticks to activate the sense of smell, creating a nostalgic ambience. Drape a large garland over the mantelpiece with matching florals as the centrepieces on each table and large cathedral arrangements on pedestals along the aisle and in various focal points. Place overlay lace linen on top of white tablecloths on all of your tables, and have silver charger plates underneath your dinner plates with silver-rimmed glassware. Go for tall silver centrepieces like candelabras to hold your green and white floral displays. Finally, silver chivari chairs are perfect to complete the look. Whatever you do, make it about you and enjoy the process. Blessing Enakimio, www.blessingbyble.com

PLANNED TO PERFECTION

What will be the key wedding trends in 2022 and how are couples planning their big days differently? The last 18 months have probably been the hardest the industry has ever seen. The restrictions we’ve had to face have not only meant that the way people are booking weddings have changed, but also what they’re booking. Regardless of restrictions lifting, we’ve seen that many are still keeping their weddings relatively small and people are choosing to spend the budget that would otherwise have gone towards more guests, on added luxuries like entertainment. We’ve seen an increase in people booking immersive experiences and musicians that provide a more intimate experience allowing guests to feel involved. We’ve seen a lot of bookings for free standing aerialists, meaning people can be in and amongst the action. Couples are also looking for versatile acts who can perform even with restrictions in place, since we’ve still felt a lot of uncertainty around big events. Needless to say, people have a lot of catching up to do and thankfully, we’ve seen bookings being made into the next couple of years, even into 2025! What most people need now is trust and flexibility. They need to be able to trust their suppliers and know

that whatever the future may hold, Covid-19 restrictions or not, their suppliers and event organisers will stand by them and they’ll do the same. Lisa Sansom, https://rubylemon.com 71

THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR

A great way to incorporate Christmas into your ceremony is to consider a mini unity candle ceremony. This involves three candles, one held by each partner (representing the two families) and then one, which will stand alone to symbolise the union between them. Often, the mothers will light the couple’s taper candles before the couple light the larger unity candle together. The choice is yours, and if your wedding is joining families including children, additional candles can be used to include them too. Flames are said to symbolise love and passion, so in the context of a wedding they show the love a couple have for each other. If your venue permits, you could give each guest a candle with the first being lit by the celebrant. They then pass the flame to the person sat next to them along the front row until everyone has a lit candle. It is then the job of the last person

www.emmamigdenphotography.com

We’re both obsessed with Christmas! How can we incorporate it into our ceremony, without being tacky?

to light the couple’s. This would look quite magical at Christmastime. Karina O’Donnell, https://celebrant-uk.co.uk

DIAMOND GEEZER

We’re having trouble settling on a pair of wedding rings that we both love and are beginning to feel the pressure. What would you recommend? More and more brides are opting for bespoke wedding bands rather than off-the-shelf pieces, so this would be a great choice for you. Carefully contoured wedding bands for example ensure that there’s harmony in both engagement and wedding rings. 72

Plain bands are still popular amongst grooms but a growing number of gents are wondering whether they should look at something set with diamonds. The discreet addition of melee diamonds or more modern designs like a rubover or tension set featuring asscher, cushion, emerald or radiant cut diamonds are well worth a look. With bespoke design, you don’t have to feel restricted by what’s already out there. Lorraine Marsh, www.thediamondsetter.co.uk

Y

our wedding will surely be one of the biggest days of your life, and with all eyes on you we understand that you’ll want to feel like the best version of your wonderful self. As the one waits for you at the end of the aisle they’ll absolutely love seeing the dial turned up to 11 on everything that made them fall in love with you. So, knock their socks off and be ready to strut your stuff as Kent’s experts come together to tell us what’s hot in the worlds of beauty, fashion and accessories for 2022.

THE 2022 HOTLIST BALLGOWNS “Ballgowns are making a comeback, although they never truly went away. The simplicity of this year’s weddings will make way for bigger and bolder affairs in the coming year. We’re also expecting the trend for bridal jumpsuits to continue. “My favourite dress from the boutique at the moment is Morilee’s Brooke. It’s a soft, lightweight lace gown that looks simply stunning on.” – Jane Park, Country Brides of Faversham

https://johnknightphotography.co.uk

NECKLINES

FLATS “Brides are thinking much more practically about footwear, so many are asking for flat or lower heels. We recommend bridal sneakers or a low, block heel if you want a bit of extra height, brilliant too if your wedding is outdoors. The dainty Chloe shoe is our go-to – comfortable but cute.” – Victoria

“We’re seeing lots of square necklines coming through in new collections and we haven’t found a body shape or bust size yet that it hasn’t suited! It’s modern, flattering and doesn’t show too much while remaining feminine. Luna, from our new range of Abella Bride gowns, is a wonderful example of this trending neckline – a stunning dress for the modern bride. “The off-the-shoulder with a sweetheart neckline is still popular and will be sticking around for 2022. Gowns like Monet by Hayley Paige will be arriving at the boutique in the new year.” – Victoria Walton, Victoria Elaine Bridal

THE BRIDAL GLOW “Natural, glowing skin is still very much in favour and can be created with radiance enhanced primers and shimmering powders. Dial it up with a combination of both or highlight certain areas such as the top of cheekbones swept up to the temples down the centre of the nose with a touch on the Cupid’s bow.” – Laetitia Rix, Makeup Angel 83

CATWALK LIPS

https://johnknightphotography.co.uk

“While wedding make-up still follows trends, it will generally be a paired-back version of what we see on the catwalk during fashion weeks around the world. So, following the lead of the runways into next year, lips are going bolder with classic reds and bright pops of pink to tie in with bouquets and palettes.” – Laetitia

CLEAN LINES

COLOUR SPLASH JEWELLERY “Wedding jewellery won’t just be about white and neutral tones. By adding a splash of soft colour to your set, perhaps through an accent gemstone or pearl, you get an individual touch. Soft, pale hues of peach, pink and yellow enhance a vintage feel, while pale blue and green create a fresher look.” – Natalie Towell, Navette Jewellery 84

www.pennyyoungphotography.com

“Clean lines are back and beautiful satins, especially matte dove satin, are proving popular for next season. Cap sleeves are also becoming a firm favourite paired with a plunge or illusion neckline. What we can be sure of is that 2022 will be full of elegance and class,” – Hayley Freeman-Revell, Victoria Grace Bridal

ETHEREAL SHIMMER “We’re seeing an ethereal trend with light reflecting shimmers and even some glitter for the boho, festivalloving brides. For the more adventurous, subtle adornments in the form of tiny pearls or sequins around the eyebrows, eyes and cheekbones can look pretty, even taken into the hair.” – Laetitia

HOW TO... SHOP FOR THE DREAM DRESS

www.pennyyoungphotography.com

Victoria from Victoria Elaine Bridal says, “There are so many wonderful boutiques in our county so be sure to research them all. Find out their individual style and specialism before booking appointments at your top two to three shops. One of them is bound to have your dream dress but if not, don’t worry, you can always book more.” Jane from Country Brides of Faversham tells us what to do once you’ve arrived for your appointment: “Relax. The more chilled you are, the more you’ll enjoy your experience. And trust your instinct. If your nan falls in love with the sparkly ballgown and your maid-of-honour thinks the mermaid dress is the one, while you can’t stop thinking about the chiffon boho number, ask to try them all again and see how you feel the second time around. Ultimately, you’re the one getting married and you have to feel confident in your choice of dress.” If there’s one thing we’ve learnt from our brides, it’s the importance of keeping an open mind. Hayley Freeman-Revell from Victoria Grace Bridal agrees: “So many ladies walk in wanting one thing and walk out with something completely different! If you go to your appointment with an open mind and allow the advisor to guide you, you may be surprised what you fall in love with.”

DEFINE THE EYES FOR A MODERN LOOK Laetitia from Makeup Angel says, “The defined brow that was trending has softened greatly and has been replaced by a more natural, swept up look. This can be achieved using eyebrow gel to hold it in place. Lashes are great for weddings as they add a touch of glamour and extra definition for photos. The lash technician industry is booming and with so many styles, the semi-permanent option can be a good choice. Finally, natural eyes are now getting smokier, so get the 2022 look by beautifully blending out smoky lids for soft bridal finish.” – Laetitia

SELECT YOUR JEWELLERY Natalie Towell of Navette Jewellery says, “Consider investing in a high quality item of wedding jewellery, ensuring it’s worn throughout the years and becomes a keepsake and an heirloom of the future. In time, it might even become something old or borrowed.” 87

GO BESPOKE

Image courtesy of The Diamond Setter

Lorraine Marsh of The Diamond Setter says, “Know that you always have a choice and what better way to commemorate your wedding day than with a bespoke piece designed and made just for you. We believe that staying away from mass-produced jewellery brings truth to your own identity. It also gives you confidence that your rings are made with intergrity, and it’s important to know who made them, where they’re made and what’ they’re made from. “Find a jeweller who gives you their time and attention rather than pushing one of their stock pieces on you. Don’t be afraid to ask for something designed especially for you. We use computer aided design as part of our bespoke service, not just wedding rings, but for any piece of jewellery. It will allow you to visualise an accurate representation of what your piece will look like prior to its creation.”

PREP YOUR SKIN Claire Aunger from Kent Professional Makeup says, “The winter months can cause problems for many skin types, especially for a dry, delicate skin. However, using the correct products and regime can really make a difference. “Firstly, even if the sun isn’t shining, you must use a moisturiser both morning and evening, which contains and an SPF. Ensure too, that you exfoliate your skin once to twice per week using a cream exfoliant or gentle resurfacing product. Avoid harsh scrubs that can cause further sensitivity and irritation. It’s a good idea to use a lip exfoliant as well to ensure lips are smooth and hydrated for the big day. “Be sure to drink at least two litres of water every day, which will help your skin’s moisture levels. And last, but not least, ask your MUA to use a hydrating primer before applying your make-up.”

GET YOUR DREAM UP DO Natasha Peto from Natasha Peto Hairdressing says, “Even if your hair is fine and straight, the hugely popular messy bun is still more than achievable. In fact, I always recommend this look for clients with fine hair as we can add extension pieces in to achieve the required volume by hiding them underneath the bun and arranging your own locks over the top. This will hide any extension used for a natural look and results in a beautiful messy bun.”

LIGHT AND SHADE

A new addition to the Lush range of perfumes, Shade offers a burst of warmth with comforting sandalwood. A fragrance with a conscience, each essential oil has its own story to tell including sandalwood from West Timor, which is extracted from protected and sustainable trees. It’s also made using a new source of olibanum oil from the Dayaxa region in Somaliland. It has full traceability down to the harvester level, with every step of the process being mapped on blockchain. In fact, Lush is working with its supplier to kickstart a project to train local women in small-scale olibanum oil distillation, a first in the community. Find it online at www.lush.com, where it’s priced at £25 for 30ml.

FEEL FLAWLESS

Speak to any wedding make-up artist and they’ll most likely tell you that primer is a must, which is why I wanted to share with you my latest discovery: Super Facialist Skin Perfecting Primer (£17). This little beauty creates a flawless-looking complexion using trusted skincare ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid, and colour-correcting pigments. It cleverly blurs imperfections by counteracting the three most common concerns of redness, sallowness and dullness, while simultaneously working to bring back skin’s natural radiance. BUZZ

BACK TO ITS ROOTS

Molton Brown was born in the 1970s as a hair salon based in the heart of London’s shopping district on South Molton Street, which was frequented by the Rolling Stones and many other icons of the day. Creators Caroline Bernstein and her husband would hand mix all formulations in the basement, with conscious care for the environment at the forefront of the brand’s values even then. Now, on the brand’s 50th anniversary it has re-introduced hair care to its range. The collection contains four tailored collections, each with a botanical at the core of its formulation: balancing, volumising, hydrating and repairing. This approach means you can strategically build a healthy-hair routine into your big-day prep depending on the needs of your locks. Check out www.moltonbrown.co.uk

EDITOR LOVES

In my humble opinion Kristin Ess The One Signature Shampoo and The One Signature Conditioner are nothing short of miraculous! I won’t lie, my hair was in an embarrassing state when I decided to give these a go. I’d been swimming three days on the bounce – down water slides, through rapids, the works! My locks were a huge matted, straw-like mess. But with just one application the shampoo lathered like a dream and after leaving the conditioner in for the recommended three minutes, even wet my hair started to feel less knotty. I usually dread having to drag the brush through my hair after I’ve washed it, but in no time flat it was knot-free, smooth and ready to dry. Shiny, soft and looking their best, the state of my locks pre-Kristin Ess were a distant memory. This is definitely my new favourite hair routine and at £8 each they won’t break the bank. My advice? Head over to www.boots.com and pop them in your basket immediately!

NATURE’S HARVEST

When Estée Lauder created Youth-Dew bath oil in 1953, she revolutionised the fragrance industry and 75 years later, the brand is carrying on her legacy with the introduction of a new luxury fragrance collection. Each of the eight scents is inspired by nature’s most breathtaking moments such as the radiance of a sunset and the mystery of a moonlit flower. What’s more, Estée Lauder’s new ScentCapture Fragrance Extender technology is specially formulated to allow each perfume to last up to 12 hours after a single application – that should get you from vows to dancefloor no problem. The new Luxury Fragrance Collection (£130 100ml, £68 40ml) is available at Estée Lauder counters nationwide and at www.esteelauder.co.uk

THE EYES HAVE IT

READY OR KNOT

The Detangling Mist is the newest product in The Hair Boss’ award-winning range. The brand, founded by Lisa Shepherd, former British Hairdresser of the Year, simplifies hair care into a four-step routine, and this newbie fits tidily into part three. With life getting busier by the second, this is the quick, on-the-go answer to dry, unruly hair. Targeted to fix frizzy and damaged locks, it’s designed to smooth and strengthen, while protecting your hair and preventing breakage. Lisa says, “In between washes, The Detangling Mist will soften the hair, taming any unruly knots and re-adding the shine that it’s lost since the last wash.” Priced at £8.99, it’s available at https://thehairboss.co.uk

They say the eyes are the window to the soul, so they’re for sure a feature to make the most of on the big day. For those looking for longer lashes and full brows, The B Collection has launched its Lash & Brow Serum (£8.99). This all-natural, vegan, cruelty-free product nourishes and stimulates growth in these two key areas for eyes that’ll pop as you say “I do.” Use every night before bed following your usual skincare routine and wash off in the morning – super-easy. You can also use it during the day to set your brows in place. We love anything with a dual purpose! Find it at https://thebcollection.co.uk 91

From the INSIDE OUT

WELLNESS INTERVIEW

We caught up with owner and founder of Simone Thomas Wellness, Simone herself, to discover how taking care of yourself from the inside out is the ultimate path to wedding wellness

T

he impact stress and anxiety can have on our bodies should never be underestimated. So, the pandemic has a lot to answer for, even outside of Covid itself. If you’re finding that months of lockdown and wedding-related stress have taken their toll, you’re certainly not alone. Sadly, anxiety-induced skin concerns and even hair loss can quickly leave you feeling pretty far from your big-day best. Enter award-winning authority on hair health and wellness Simone Thomas, who’s spent her career sharing her expertise in nutrition, hairloss and bio-energetics. Alongside hair salons and hair-loss clinics, which boast an elite global clientele that includes royalty, celebrities and CEOs; she’s also the founder of Simone Thomas Wellness. We asked Simone for her help in guiding you back onto the path of wedding wellness. Based on your experience, what challenges are nearlyweds facing in the aftermath of the pandemic? 2020 had a huge affect on the wedding industry with 64 per cent of big days being cancelled or postponed, which means stress levels for everyone involved are now at an alltime high. A wedding is an important day that couples have invested a lot of time and money in, it’s something they’ve dreamed of. So, this is all having a negative impact on how we feel and how we sleep, with our skin and hair responding to that. A bad hair or skin day isn’t great at any time, let alone when the camera is constantly on you and you want to feel your best. What the last year has taught us though is 95

to start working on yourself? You don’t have to go all out, but you might start looking at a nutrition plan, exercising or having hydra facials. However, I fully recognise there may be financial restraints, so this might not always be possible. In which case, I’d say three months is optimal, but the minimum is six weeks in advance. This way there’s time to flush out any nasties and create balance allowing the body to become stronger and progress. Many tell me they start to see a difference within two weeks. how to take a step back and invest in ourselves, as we often don’t listen to what our bodies need. At Simone Thomas Wellness, we’ve seen a huge increase in clients asking for advice on nutrition and bioenergetics, as well as hair loss. There’s also been a rise in skin conditions like psoriasis, acne, dermatitis of the scalp, eczema, telogen effluvium and alopecia areata, which is commonly linked to stress and hormones. In fact, stress has a huge knock on effect on our hormones as women. But men too are experiencing skin complaints and suffering hair loss. So, people preparing for their big days have really been struggling during lockdown. How can we turn this around – where do we start? What I always say is that everything starts in the gut. If you look after that, the body will look after you. I call it The Mothership. Poor gut health is the start of disease and can be linked to degenerative disorders, so it really should be the number one priority if you’re looking to feel the best version of yourself. Everyday Wellness, part of the Simone Thomas Wellness range, is a super-strength probiotic supplement containing six types of probiotics to improve gut health by introducing both good and bad bacteria, vital on a day-today basis. When I say “bad bacteria” people often ask me, why anyone would want that, but the body needs diversity to become stronger. These supplements also help to reduce the inflammation that occurs naturally in a body. Food can be a trigger, as can poor sleep patterns, stress, and the environment. Here, we’re focusing on removing any nasties so they don’t get absorbed into the cells. What advice would you give to those looking to achieve that natural-looking bridal glow without a face full of make-up? Skin Quencher is great for anyone wanting to feel youthful or who’s keen to avoid wearing lots for make-up. It’ll work from the inside out to give you that ultimate bridal glow. I’m also a huge fan of facials, but it’s more about what we put into our body rather than what we put on top of it. You have to work on yourself internally for the outside to glow. Yes, skincare products are going to have an effect, but if the inside isn’t right, it won’t be long term. 96

Biotin Brilliance too helps with mild skin irritation caused by stress. You may already have heard about biotins, they’re a B vitamin and have been talked about for a number of years as being vital for healthy skin, hair and nails. What can you suggest for brides, and bridesmaids, looking to grow their hair for a wedding? Our Ginkgo Biloba B+ plan contains folic acid with essential B vitamins and biotin, but if you don’t suffer from tiredness, then the biotin haircare plan is great for maintenance. Alternatively, if you have no specific worries about hair loss, but want to feel the best version of yourself, taking no chances with stress, Skin Quencher is great too. These plans are also great for grooms concerned about hair loss. What are the benefits of a haircare plan versus a single supplement? I formulated the plans because I learnt from experience that most people’s concept of what’s healthy actually isn’t. Most of us will happily invest in skincare and clothes, but not in how we feel internally. I think of the plans as a three-step process, much like a garden. To grow beautiful flowers, you need sunlight, amazing soil, and water. So, the probiotics are the ultimate go to, but there’s no point if you’re a fan of microwave meals or Macdonald’s. Unless you cook from scratch, you’re throwing away the goodness you’re putting into the body with the probiotics. Pairing them with Super Greens and Ginkgo Biloba B+ or Biotin Brilliance is then all about preparing the gut, balancing the body and removing toxins, as well as making sure you create the best environment for vitamin and mineral absorption. The most important step though is water: filtered versus tap, glass bottle versus plastic. Purely because of what can be absorbed through plastic as well as unfortunately what’s in mainstream water that comes through the tap. When would be the ideal time to start taking supplements in order to feel wedding-ready? To me there’s never a day too early! Most couples will start planning a year to two years in advance, so why not use the same timeline

Tell us a bit about the company’s ethos. Supplements are a big industry, but they’ve often received bad press because the products simply don’t do what they claim to. So, these are all things we’ve addressed across everything we do from the ingredients to manufacturing. We make sure that every process has full certification, including soil association and vegan accreditation. We’ve worked hard to ensure our products are vegan and our marine collagen is protected and sourced ethically. Everything is sustainable as much as possible. When our bottles are finished with they get made into tiles and flooring, and the packaging too is eco-friendly. Even the energy used in my office is renewable. We’re proud of the fact that recently we were responsible for 25 trees being planted in the rainforest due to our renewable energy contract.
