After months, even years, of reading my excited babble about our dear CWM colleague Melissa’s wedding day, you may be relieved to hear that it finally happened, and what a day it was! I’ll leave the storytelling to the bride herself, as you can read all about it from page 97, but I would like to impart a little of my own bridesmaid’s wisdom centred around the morning preparations. These moments were the highlight for me, and it’s a part of the day often overlooked amongst the hubbub of wedding planning, so… ❤ Be as organised as you possibly can in the lead up. This way, you’ll have very little to worry about on the day. Admittedly, Melissa’s abilities in this area are superhuman, but knowing we weren’t allowed into the venue to set up until 10am she’d put together individual boxes containing everything each reception table needed. All we had to do when we arrived was unpack them in the right place. We were done in no time, stress free and ready to be beautified.

❤ When you have your trial, be sure to discuss with your hair and make-up artists the morning’s timings. Understanding whether there’ll be any travel time to the ceremony involved; or restrictions such as when you’re allowed entry to the venue, if you’re getting ready there, will help them work out where they should be up to and when. Melissa’s team had everything running like clockwork in a very tight time frame.

❤ Enjoy every moment. I can’t explain how special these few hours spent with our bride were. Chaotic and gone in a flash, but oh-so precious. I spent a significant proportion of it in tears and I could probably count the number of times I’ve happy cried prior to this on one hand! As we waited for Melissa to be called in to see the registrar, only the four of us remained in the cottage, and a hush descended for the first time that day as the bride centred herself and absorbed the enormity of what was about to happen. I swear I’ll never forget that time, my heart nearly beat right out of my chest with love for my amazing friends. My point is this: devote some of your planning time to the morning preparations and when your photographer offers you the option of capturing them, take them up on it. You won’t regret it, promise.

Now, while I leave you and mull over what on Earth I’m going to regale you with now the wedding is over, I hope you enjoy this issue. It’s bursting at the seams with inspiration! We’ve taken a look into the world of wedding flowers, one of my favourite subjects, and put together an indispensable A to Z guide to dress shopping not to beEnjoymissed.and keeeep planning!

HOT CAKES

Surviving one of the hottest British summers on record has made us wonder: is it still possible for couples to have their dream cake in the blistering conditions that are set to become a regularity over the years to come? We’ve heard one or two disaster stories about melting, collapsing bakes! However, having chatted to Claudia Newberry at Purple Flour we’re delighted to report that the answer, without compromise is, Purple“Yes!”

Flour has just delivered beautiful buttercream cakes, ganache masterpieces, and traditional iced classics, as well as naked and semi-naked creations all in the beautiful sunshine. We asked Claudia what her secret is! “The key is simple: planning,” she says. “You need to work with the whole wedding team, from the caterers, florists, venue and of course the couples to agree on three things. Firstly, how you’re going to store the cake before it goes on display. Secondly, where are you going to display your creation? And lastly, when are you going to cut it?

“We spent many an afternoon adding the finishing touches to our cakes while sitting on champagne crates in the back of a chiller van! You just need to plan. Cake in the sun? Heck yeah!”

Continuing its mission to bring happy hotels to historical buildings on some of Britain’s most desirable streets, spring 2023 will see the boutique hospitality group GuestHouse open the doors to the third property in its portfolio in Margate.No.42Margate

will embrace the nostalgia we know and love from this sunny seaside town. Housed in a Victorian beauty of a beachfront building it will include 21 bedrooms, a restaurant, rooftop, and spa where the town’s open love of uniquely English quirks will be felt all around.

Since the 18th century Margate has offered a home to eccentric English traditions, from iconic Dreamland and its listed rollercoaster and menagerie cages, to the unexplained shell grotto and beachside activities. With interiors that playfully draw from the motifs and subtle references that embrace the town’s nature, No.42 will be the perfect base for a hen or stag do, or minimoon to remember.

V.I.PETS

Searches for “pets at weddings” are up 200 per cent since 2020 proving couples are increasingly looking to give their furry friends a starring role in their special day. This recent data from Google comes as no surprise to the team at Salomons Estate in Tunbridge Wells, who have seen a sharp increase in the number of enquiries from couples looking to book pet-friendly ceremonies. “For some, it’s non-neogtiable. Many couples we speak to book with us on the basis that their dog can be present for the ‘I dos,’ photos and drinks reception,” says commercial sales manager Courtney Smith. From delightful miniature outfits to adorable photography, Salomons Estate, which took first place in the Best Events Team category at the Kent Wedding Awards 21/22, has seen loved-up pet owners making their furry friend a ring bearer, flowergirl or groomsman.

Amongst the biggest wedding trends of 2022 the venue also lists grazing tables and outdoor pizza ovens as popular options, with the return of big weddings, which are making a comeback following theForpandemic.furtherinformation on tying the knot at Salomons, head over to www.salomons-estate.com

This luxurious and imposing Grade I listed building was constructed in 1706 by the rather splendidly named Admiral Sir Cloudsley Shovel, whose coat of arms can be found above the High Street entrance. It has enjoyed a varied history as a butchers market, a courtroom, a concert hall and a cinema. For the past 100 years it has functioned as Rochester’s premier venue for parties, events and weddings offering you the flexibility to enjoy the day of your dreams in a historical setting.

Located just off the beautifully preserved Victorian High Street, famous for its connections with Charles Dickens, the venue is close to the cobbled Boley Hill that links the High Street through an ancient gateway to the moat of Rochester Castle and Gardens on your right, and to the left Rochester Cathedral.

The Queens Hall is the largest space here for ceremonies and receptions hosting up to 300 loved ones (or 275 with a dancefloor). A luxurious space with wow factor, its stunning architectural features include high ceilings, sparkling chandeliers and impressive windows. This room can be configured to suit weddings of all sizes and can host wedding breakfasts, sit-down meals and evening celebrations.

The Princes Hall is suitable for more intimately sized events and can host up to 80 nearest and dearest for ceremonies. It can also act as a welcome area for drinks and canapés when used in conjunction with The Queens Hall, linked together by the grand sweep of the staircase.

Rochester Corn Exchange uses a number of specially selected caterers to suit all budgets, tastes and types of wedding including Asian and AfroCaribbean. The three existing packages, The Cathedral, The Castle and The Courtyard all give exclusive access to the venue.

With space for 180 wedding guests at this charming hotel, everything you’ll ever need for your big day will be taken care of by its team of specialist wedding coordinators, who take pride in their outstanding knowledge of local suppliers. Whatever you need, whether it’s a bespoke floral arrangement or wow-factor evening entertainment, they’ll organise it for you. What’s more, with easy access to the M2, M20 and M25 you can rest assured knowing guests will be able to find you easily at Bridgewood Manor. Plus, the hotel is designed around an inner courtyard, a fantastic location for drinks receptions and those all-

important photographs.

The Hythe Suite is a large, bright and airy space overlooking the courtyard and flooded with natural light. A partition wall separates the main function suite from the bar area, making it flexible and easily transformed from day to evening. There’s ample space for 180 for the ceremony and reception. Slightly smaller, The Hogarth Suite, also bright and spacious, boasts high ceilings and a separate bar. It can accommodate 120 from “I dos” to dancing.

More intimate spaces for the ceremony include the Stratford and Maidstone Suites, both with room for 40 nearest and dearest. The former looks out onto a small patio, while the latter has views over the hotel’s courtyard and it’s neutral décor makes it the ideal blank canvas.

Bradbourne House is an exclusive-use, Queen Anne, Grade I listed country house located in the heart of Kent. The House boasts 20 acres of picturesque parkland featuring ancient trees, a tranquil lake and secret garden fruit orchard. From the moment you drive through the iron gates you’re surrounded by pristine striped lawns, and the grounds are home to a plethora of wildlife including hundreds of Canadian geese that return to the lake each year.

The venue offers two licensed indoor areas. What would once have been the ladies’ sewing room, The Drawing Room is the perfect spot for intimate ceremonies with up to 50 guests. The bay windows look out across the lakes and gold chandeliers hang from the ceiling. The Great Hall at the heart of the House can host up to 100 nearest and dearest. Its blue walls are one of Bradbourne House’s most memorable features, with the Twisden family portraits adorning each of them. Huge doors lead out to the marble steps at the front and look over the grounds.

The Hatton Fruit Garden is the venue’s antique apple and pear orchard. Originally planted as part of the Dig for Victory campaign, the walled

gardens now provide that secret spot for you to exchange your vows. You can also say your “I dos” al fresco on The Great Hall Steps, which provide the grandest of entrances. As you ascend and arrive by the side of your beloved, the house itself provides the most spectacular backdrop.

The Great Hall can also play host to receptions with 100 seated or 200 standing from a decadent wedding breakfast to that all-important evening bash. The Breakfast Room can accommodate 40 dining guests or 100 standing. It provides a different feel within the House with its dark oak interiors and portraits. Often referred to as the gentleman’s room and complete with grand piano, this space is the perfect setting for intimate meals or relaxing with tea and cake. The Drawing Room, which can host the same numbers as the aforementioned Breakfast Room boasts bay windows practically made to frame the wedding cake, and the ceiling is beautifully ornate, covered in gold detailing.

DID YOU KNOW?

The house as it stands today was built between 1712 and 1715 and served as the Twisden family home right up until 1937, when the house was auctioned and bought by the East Malling Trust.

PENSHURST PLACE AND GARDENS

Set in a 2,500-acre estate, the 14th-century Penshurst Place and its formal gardens are rich in natural splendour and breathtaking historical architecture. With sandstone walls and an impressive sweeping driveway, it has been described as the perfect combination of an inspiring castle and intimate country manor house. This grand stately home welcomes visitors through the wicket gate in the large wooden doorway that previously saw centuries of royalty pass through.

Built in 1341 and the oldest room at Penshurst Place is the spectacular Baron’s Hall brimming with character and original Medieval architecture. It can host 200 guests for a seated ceremony, 136 for the wedding breakfast or 200 for a standing reception. The Sunderland Room adjoins the Minstrel Gallery and overlooks Baron’s Hall. Hung with historical paintings, it sits atop a spiral turret staircase. It can hold136 seated for

the ceremony, 88 for the wedding breakfast and 140 for a standing reception. The Buttery, once the original bottle store for the house, boasts ancient brick walls, a large fireplace and tapestries. Ideal for intimate “I dos” it can hold 40 nearest and dearest. There’s also space here for 30 loved ones at the wedding breakfast and 50 at the standing reception.

For al fresco ceremonies, the Inner Courtyard is a beautiful spot, surrounded by sandstone walls and scented roses. In addition, the newly licensed Nut Garden provides a more informal alternative to the Elizabethan rooms inside the house. In fact, so varied are the options here, we’d need most of the magazine to tell you about them! So, hop over to the website or get in touch with the wedding team to find out more.

32

Leah immediately knew that Lee was someone she wanted to be friends with when she met him while working in the restaurant at Brandshatch Place Hotel & Spa. The friendship grew through mutual support and in time blossomed into a relationship.

The couple went to Nerja in Spain on holiday with best friends Riley and Ilona in September 2019 and while visiting The Balcon De Europa, which looks out onto the Med, Lee popped the question. “I had an inkling it might happen, but I was still overwhelmed when it did and I didn’t answer him for a really long time!” Leah remembers.

The venue search was on when they returned to the UK and the pair visited several before they discovered Nettlestead Place. “We knew it was the right place for us, everything about it is stunning. When we saw its undercroft, we knew we’d be able to get the look and feel we wanted,” Leah explains.

Here, the bride shares her treasured memories of the big day as well as the preparations…

SETTING THE SCENE

There are plenty of flower names in Leah’s family – on her mum’s side alone there’s Violet, Rose and Iris. Plus, her two flowergirls were also aptly named – one Violet and the other with the middle name Rose. So, in honour of these lovely ladies Leah’s bouquet featured roses and ivy, while the bridesmaids’ and flowergirls’ contained roses and eucalyptus. The idea was for little Violet to have her namesake blooms in her bouquet, but sadly there weren’t any to be found. The buttonholes too were all mindfully created: the best man and ushers had eucalyptus to match the bridesmaids’, and the dads wore gypsophila to complement the flowergirls. Meanwhile, Lee’s featured a rose, gypsophila and ivy to mirror Leah’s bouquet.

Continuing the flower theme, Leah’s maiden name is Poppy, so they chose poppy seeds as their wedding favours, which were gifted in little hessian bags to suit their rustic theme. With the idea of featuring everything they loved without deviating from the rustic aesthetic, the place names were cut from wood in the Disney font; while the tables were all named after the couple’s favourite Marvel characters. The retro comic-book versions were printed on to parchment and framed before Leah’s mum calligraphed the names.

The centrepieces were made up of gin and whisky bottles filled with faux flowers, mainly pink peonies and gypsophila. Fairylights were added for a touch of extra magic. Faux ivy was wrapped around the pillars in the undercroft and rose gold tea light holders were placed around their bases. The latter were also used to decorate the tables along with hessian runners.

Since Leah was staying nearby, she didn’t need transport. However, the gents were all getting ready at home, so a Buick was booked for the ushers and Lee arrived in style in a Mustang, which his bride booked as a surprise.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

“We had canapés, which tasted amazing,” Leah tells us. These were followed by a three-course wedding breakfast started off with goat’s cheese and beetroot parfait. The main course was braised beef, with chocolate mousse for dessert. The couple and their guests enjoyed tapas in the evening and they were also treated to a sweet table and doughnut wall.

The three-tier big-day bake was simply iced and decorated with

the same roses as Leah’s bouquet. “We didn’t want anything too over the top and this tied in with our rustic vibe. Lee has worked for Disney for eight years, so as a nod they had black and white steamboat Minnie and Mickey Lego minifigures as further decoration.

LOOKING THE PART

Shortly after she became engaged, Leah visited a wedding fair with her mum and friend Ilona. She saw a gown on a mannequin, and it was love at first sight. “This is the dress I want,” she told them. A month later she went to try it on at Wedding World in Folkestone and despite trying on plenty of other dresses, still knew this was the one

She paired the gown with Sophia Webster shoes with “I do” on the soles, but changed into a pair of white Converse with rose gold stitching for the evening. The bride accessorised with mum Karen’s garter and silver earrings, along with a diamond necklace Karen had bought for her daughter to wear on her wedding day and a rose gold and diamante hair piece she’d made for her.

Lee was dressed in a three-piece Marc Darcy grey check suit with pink lining. He paired this with Ted Baker brogues with the words “game over” on the soles. The groom accessorised with cufflinks featuring the fingerprints of his grandad and a necklace bearing his mum’s fingerprint. He also wore a pin that Leah bought him featuring a black and white picture of his mum on her wedding day and one of his grandad from his.

The groomsmen all wore three-piece grey check suits too, with rose gold tie and pocket square to match the groom’s. The bridesmaids looked beautiful in their rose gold multiway dresses.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

The couple were bowled over by their live band, who entertained guests throughout the evening. “They were amazing, such great music,” Leah says. They even let one of the couple’s friends take the mic and join them for a song!

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

Leah says: “I felt very nervous at the start of the day and extremely overwhelmed, but I did enjoy it. It was so special and amazing to see so many people we love all together. Lee seemed to take it all in his stride and he had so much fun too.

The newlyweds opted to have smoke bomb pictures taken, which they thoroughly enjoyed, as well as the sparkler photos they did at the end of the night.

THE BRIDE’S TOP TIPS

“I was adamant I wasn’t going to have anything to do in the few weeks leading up to the wedding and I was going to be all set and ready to go, so that I’d be able to chill. That did turn out to be unrealistic though, so any couple should be prepared to have things to do even the day before. Also, brace yourselves for people to pull out last minute. You hope it doesn’t happen, but it does,” Leah says.

The bride continues, “Make sure you have one day that’s just for you and have a pamper. My maid-of-honour took me for a massage the week before and it was lovely.”

the heart

Cozette and Alex became childhood sweethearts at the age of 15, and following 12 years of debate it was confirmed on their wedding day that it was Alex who added Cozette on Facebook first! Although, the pair didn’t attend the same school, they managed to cross paths and still share the same group of friends all these years later.

Despite being together for a decade, Cozette had no inkling that Alex intended to propose while they were on holiday in one of their favourite places. To be fair, Alex only had slightly more of an idea himself, as he’d carried the ring around all day on the beach before deciding the right time had finally arrived! After dinner, during a post-meal walk, he popped the question just before midnight with no-one else around – exactly how Cozette wanted it to be. “I was so shocked, I forgot to say ‘yes’ for what must have seemed like an eternity to Alex,” she says.

Read on, as the bride shares her happy memories of the gorgeous wedding day…

39 REAL WEDDINGS

I wore a stunning, beaded, 1920s-style fitted dress. It was nothing like I’d imagined. I thought I’d go for lace with a long train, but when my sister saw this in the window and told me I had to try it on, I knew it was fate. It was the only one left of that style in store and it fit me like a glove.

I accessorised with a sparkly belt and a matching hair comb. I also wore a beautiful veil with teardrop crystals. My shoes were elegant and super-comfortable with pearl detailing.

The gentlemen’s attire reflected the relaxed nature of our wedding Alex felt more comfortable wearing chinos, shirt, blazer and bow tie rather than a three-piece suit. The groomsmen all wore the same except for the blazer – the groom’s was navy velvet.

My maid-of-honour and three older bridesmaids wore a beautiful Bardot-style dress featuring an ombre pleated skirt in cornflower blue and white. My middle bridesmaids wore white dresses from Monsoon with a cornflower blue sash, while the flowergirls wore cornflower blue dresses with a white sash. They all looked truly beautiful.

We were on cloud nine all day. Relieved it was finally happening post Covid and overwhelmed with love and happiness. Our incredible and charismatic vicar Jonny Douglas led our ceremony and had all the guests in stitches.

beautiful mix of seasonal flowers. We used dried flower heads as confetti.

We loved the natural, relaxed feel of Nurstead Court. It was peaceful, serene and simply beautiful.

Our wedding favours were homemade paper seed hearts, which guests could plant and spread the love of beautiful wild flowers.

Many of the blooms in our floral arrangements were grown on our florist’s allotment and included peonies, white roses, eucalyptus, oxy, nigella and cornflowers.

Our three-tier cake included red velvet, Victoria sponge and lemon layers. It was decorated with buttercream frosting and fresh flowers. Our table plan was a wooden pallet decorated in faux flowers.

The tables were all numbered, but not consecutively. They were all ones significant to us such as 15, the age we met; 23, the date we got engaged; three, our first date and so on. We had a seated wedding breakfast supplied by the venue’s in-house caterer. Guests raved about the food, and the portion sizes were incredible!

Paper lanterns in shades of mint, white and baby blue adorned the ceiling of the marquee with fresh carnations hanging between them.

The most insane surprise, organised by Alex’s mum, was the singing waiters. They did a set of eight songs in between the best man’s speech and dessert. They created the most electric atmosphere and got everyone in the party mood.

We explored the stunning Greek islands of Mykonos and Santorini on our honeymoon. I’d highly recommend it.

The fact that we had all of our friends and family in the same place after being apart for so long reaffirmed how special they are to us and brought home the importance of surrounding ourselves with such positive and uplifting influences.

We gave our guests handcrafted chocolate orange fudge in miniature suitcases as wedding favours, along with rustic key bottle openers and mini puzzle match boxes. The reception space looked amazing when it was all finished. To finally see it with our friends and family seated really did make us smile. Fatma our photographer kept us both smiling throughout the hustle and bustle of the busy morning getting ready. I wore Alice by Together Forever with a silver floral hairpiece. Our centrepieces were handmade oyster shell roses in glass vases to represent our love of the seaside and the tables were all named after places in New Zealand in tribute to my time living there. It’s a country that’s very close to my heart.

Gary wore a light grey three-piece suit with light blue waistcoat and lavender tie. His groomsmen were dressed to match and the bridesmaids wore lavender dresses. We had a Connect4-style guest book, rustic globe and travel trunk decorating ourgift table. Our wedding breakfast was a delicious barbecue buffet. Our flower arrangements were all designed in keeping with our lavender, green and white palette. Our two-tier cake was decorated to look like a rustic tree stump completewith edible bark, and had our initials carved into it. One layer waschocolate fudge and the other was limoncello sponge.
REAL WEDDING 47

Wedding DJ, Iain Baker entertained our guests in the evening, and also providedour ceremony music. Not only that, he acted as our toastmaster for the receptiontoo. He was fantastic and made sure the music worked with our summer settingwhile throwing in some of our favourite rock anthems as well.

Gary is a very private person and doesn’t do social media, so after a lot of searching, borderline online stalking actually, by the best man, he managed to find and read out Gary’s lesser-known overselling LinkedIn profile word for word during his best man speech!

Due to Covid restrictions on overseas travel at the time, we opted for a weekend in Bath at the MacDonald Bath Spa Hotel, which was the same place we had our first ever holiday together as a couple – always a happy memory for us. It was funny being seated at the exact same dining table we had that first night seven years ago.

Allow for a few small things to go wrong on the day and don’t get stressed about it.

LOCKDOWN

Lora and Rachel’s is a modern love story, having met on Tinder in 2020. “We’d only been chatting for a week when the first lockdown was announced, and since we both lived alone and had been furloughed, we decided to quarantine together,” Lora tells us. During that time, they never left each other’s sides. They discovered similar life experiences and immediately clicked. “We both said that even if there hadn’t been a romantic attraction, we’d likely still have been great friends,” Lora shares.

So sure was Lora that Rachel was the one, she purchased the ring three days into their relationship. She’d planned to propose when their respective families came to visit, but the continuing lockdowns scuppered that idea, so she popped the question, just the two of them, at home. Rachel proposed back a few months later on New Year’s Day. “We’d hoped to go for a walk but it was absolutely freezing, so ended up eating a car picnic before she gave me the ring,” Lora

We’d kept our vows a secret, and it turned out we were both using the exact same words. It showed how close we are and how completely in sync.

My dress was an end-of-line style but it was absolutely perfect and didn’t need any tailoring – it was so comfortable. I didn’t want to be bothered by a train, and being 5ft 10in it was a struggle to find a tea-length dress, so I went for an asymmetric hem. Because my hair is short I wouldn’t have been able to pin in a veil but I wanted to feel more special so I invested in a beautiful hair vine.

The importantmost thing to us was that those in andourtoitwedressesthereallyWefeltweddingourpartycomfortable.weren’tfollowinggirls-wear-thing,sodidn’tthinkwouldbefairforcethatonnearestdearest.

I knew I wanted afternoon tea as the wedding breakfast, so the centrepieces featured mugs filled with artificial flowers. Rachel wore an indigo Marc Darcy suit with a lilac bow

Decide in advance what your non-negotiables are, as well as your nice-to-haves and what you’re able to compromise on. For us the food and photography were the most important.

The whole day was really overwhelming, but so happy. I cried my way down the aisle and we both barely made it through our vows and speeches. Even our photographer was sobbing!

We love this showcase of celebrant-led ceremony options with a seasonal and sustainable twist

Images courtesy of Emily Brown Photography

Kent-based celebrants Alex Hilder and Kate Mitchell together with photographer Emily Brown set out to create a seasonal styled shoot to showcase different ceremony setups. After all, your celebrant-led ceremony can be whatever and wherever you want it to be! As well as a super-fun pumpkin theme, the central idea was to reflect the team’s love of nature and desire to be as sustainable as possible in their businesses, so they gathered together a group of local suppliers who share the same ethos to help them. The dresses were preloved, the flowers were grown locally and the hair and make-up artists use cruelty-free brands.

The models are real couples and, Alex says, “We absolutely love the authenticity they brought to the images. We feel strongly that it’s important for the industry to support diversity in all its forms and using couples who aren’t professional models goes some way to helping with this.” Both pairs are already married, so as a thank you for their help, Kate and Alex gifted them genuine vow renewals. So, the photos you see here depict the most precious of moments between these couples recommitting themselves to one another.

ALEX’S CEREMONY

Alex found a beautiful spot underneath a tree for Ellie and Tim. She took the pumpkins and worked them into a soft, rustic palette lifted by splashes of yellow in Ellie’s bouquet. Alex incorporated her couple’s love story with a hand tying using recycled sari fabric as well as a ring blessing, and they jumped the broom to the ringing of bells as they left the circle. Their three boys joined the group after the ceremony for a family candle lighting and they all took the chance to jump the broom together.

58

KATE’S CEREMONY

Kate opted to hold Bex and Jake’s ceremony in a circle of pumpkins by a vintage tractor creating a pagan ceremony, rich in her couple’s shared beliefs. She incorporated elements such as calling in the quarter and a sacred circle. It also included unity candles, handfasting and a personalised oathing stone along with elements of the bride’s culture through the use of Stefana, Greek wedding crowns.

Stellar wedmin advice from those in the know

BEST OF THE SEASON

How can we give our venue styling an autumnal twist?

Start with your base when planning your reception tables, and you can create an autumnal style simply by using textured linens, coloured fabric runners or accent with a coloured napkins in burnt oranges, rich reds, andTherebrowns.aremany fantastic autumn-hued florals, foliage and dried flowers available for centrepieces. Consider using amber-coloured glass, lanterns or hurricane vases with candles for an inviting glow.

Include natural elements such as wood, leaves and pinecones –

you can forage or source these easily and they’ll store in advance of your wedding. Use seasonal produce such as gourds and munchkins as accents, and scatter nuts, leaves and red apples around your centrepieces to add texture and interest.

Recycled and seed paper stationery has an amazing colour and texture. Alternatively, you can write your guests’ names on dried leaves or tie them to pinecones to greet them as they take their seats. Your loved ones will adore seasonal favours too. Source or have fun making your own red toffee apples, or honeycomb pieces for a fun seasonal twist.

HEY BABY!

We have a gorgeous young baby and are quite concerned about looking after her on the wedding morning and during the day. It’s not a responsibility we want to put on our wedding party. What can we do?

Consider having your normal sitter to come and look after your baby or if that’s not possible look for a childcare service that offers an all-day and evening nanny service. By employing a nanny for the day and evening, you can keep your gorgeous little one in their normal routine without relying on family and friends who would be missing out on your specialWhenday.you

find a nanny, ask to meet with them to see how they engage with you and your child as you need to be comfortable leaving them with that person. Discuss their routine during that initial meeting and write everything down to give to the nanny to follow throughout the day.

Autumn is one of my favourite foodie times, when our best heritage and native vegetables are at their peak. So, I’d suggest the 12-hour potroasted whole beef brisket. We season our locally-sourced beef for 24 hours in my own stonehouse seasoning, then slow roast it, before pulling it in its own cooking juices. It’s served with my homemade mild horseradish mayonnaise and our very own beef dripping root vegetable crisps in a brioche bun.

To accompany this, I’d recommend our toasted broccoli, red apple, and almond slaw alongside mini roasted potato, wholegrain mustard and dill mayo salad, topped with rocket salad.

We can bring our airstream-style catering trailer to your wedding venue and lay our feasting, graze tables to coordinate with your wedding theme or palette.

Are black and white images still popular and should we opt to have them?

In my experience, the love of a black and white image is still as strong as ever. When editing wedding photos for my couples, I give them a selection of black and white as well as colour. The monochrome image gives a photo a timeless quality like no other filter or effect and people do love these today as much as ever. These days it’s possible to edit with a high or low contrast, giving two completely different looks to the classic black and white image. People tend to like them as it can smooth out skin tone and texture! These photos can also achieve beautiful results in any weather condition, so it doesn’t matter whether the sun is too bright, or not bright enough, the results are always stunning. I have many in my home of my own family, which I love and they create a real feature in any room. A large canvas or print from your wedding day, will stand the test of time in this classic combination.

TASTE OF AUTUMN

We’d love the flavours of our cake to reflect our autumnal theme. What can you suggest?

PERFECT PREP

Is there anything we can add to the morning preparations to make it an even more special and memorable time?

I love when bridal parties get excited about the wedding morning, as it’s often overlooked. It’ll be a long day, so make sure you have breakfast taken care of. A selection of pastries will be welcomed by all, as will some bubbly to raise your first toast of the day when you’re all ready. At The Pretty Prep Studios, there’s a full-size fridge, so you can keep the bottle chilled until you’re ready for it and a separate kitchenette perfect for all your snacks and goodies.

You’ll have so much fun creating a playlist together. Why not set up a collaboration on Spotify and send it round to your bridesmaids to contribute their favourite tunes? You’ll find a bluetooth speaker in the studio, so you can sing along while you’re being beautified.

Remember, just because your wedding venue has a getting-ready room or bridal suite, this doesn’t mean it’s perfect for a large group of you. The Pretty Prep Studio is a big, airy space with enough room for all your bride tribe and all your suppliers. And with four stations for hair and make-up, there’ll be no more fighting for natural light, plug sockets or mirrors.

ALL TAKEN CARE OF What are the benefits of having a toastmaster at our wedding?

Your wedding day is going to be one of the most special days of your life, and whatever the style, vibe or location a professional toastmaster will bring great value regardless of guest numbers.Asawedding professional, a toastmaster will be there as part of the team working together to make your day fantastic! What would it be like if your guests are greeted as they arrive by a smart, uniformed toastmaster who not only welcomes them but keeps them informed of what’s happening and when?

What about you – the newlyweds? One of our key roles is to take away the stress and worry about your guests, the venue, the entertainment and the photographer, as well as the timing and the interaction between them. The toastmaster takes ownership of the running order of the day, ensures everyone has a smile on their face, and lets you focus on what matters most – each other!

BRING ON THE FURRY FUN

How can we involve our beloved dog in our wedding day?

He’s part of the family after all!

Our dogs are our best friends, so it’s no surprise that many couples want to involve them in their big day. We hope our expert guide will get you started. Just be prepared for them to steal the show!

❤ Give them a special role. From ring bearer to dog of honour or flowergirl, just remember they may need some one-to-one training in the lead up to prep them for their starring moment.

❤ Capture some paw-some photos. A popular choice is to have them greet your guests and have their picture snapped, rather than stay for the whole day.

❤ Pack the essentials. Make sure your dog has access to water, their dinner, plenty of treats and their favourite toy to keep them focused for photos, and of course, poo bags.

❤ Finishing touches. Incorporate your theme into their outfit or floral collar, personalised dog cake topper or even canine-inspired party favours.

❤ Hire a professional. Having your fur baby at your wedding completes your day, but you don’t want them to be a burden on your guests. That’s where we come in. We take care of all their needs, work with your photographer to get their attention and ensure they and your venue are happy.

BOHEMIAN RHAPDOSY

We’re having a boho-inspired wedding and would love to incorporate elements of our theme into our cake. Do you have any ideas?

This is still such a popular style and there are so many different ways to add boho elements to your wedding cake. Whether you’re going for dried flowers and pampas grass or full macramé styling, by discussing your wedding in detail during a design consultation, we can select elements and inspirations from all aspects of your day to incorporate into yourBohocake.doesn’t have to simply mean going for a naked or semi-naked bake, there are so many things we can do with fully-iced cakes too. Touches of edible lace, metallics, vibrant colours, texture and wild flowers (re-created in sugar work) are just some of the fantastic ways to add themed flourishes.

GEEK CHIC

I want our wedding cake to be beautiful and elegant, but my partner wishes it could reflect all things nerd! Is there a way of merging the two to keep us both happy?

Yes, this can happen! We recently had a couple who were Disney fans, but wanted to keep things subtle. This was the perfect opportunity for a traditional wedding cake with hidden Mickey ears piped on it. The couple also wanted to have some fun with handmade cartoon figures of them on top with their two dachshund dogs at their feet, so they could still be included in the wedding without being there. Just because your wedding is traditional, doesn’t mean you can’t have a bit of fun with a big-day bake that will please you both.

BIND US TOGETHER

I’m a Christian, but my husband-to-be isn’t so we’re struggling to decide what sort of ceremony to have. What would you advise?

In your situation, I’d recommend a brief registration of marriage appointment with a registrar followed by a bespoke ceremony with a celebrant – one who can include the religious elements you’d love, alongside your story and your own personal vows. The latter can be held anywhere too, so it should tick all the boxes.

Every celebrant has their own position on including religious content, so look around carefully. Personally, I’m very happy to include religious aspects if they resonate for my couples. My Church of England upbringing schooled me well for this! I give my couples lots of time to talk about exactly what elements each of them would like included. For example, a hymn or Christian reading that wouldn’t be permitted in a legal ceremony, or the traditional pattern of a church ceremony with wording unique to you. Maybe you’d like prayers or blessings? We can work together to create a ceremony that’s totally yours, while finding a middle ground that feels right for you both.

The ultimate A-Z guide to wedding-dress shopping

IS FOR ALTERATIONS

A Rock that frock

Once you’ve ordered your dream dress you’ll need to start looking for a seamstress to do your alterations. Even though you’ve ordered your size, chances are it’ll still need a little tweak here and there as dresses fit everyone differently. Often the bridal boutique will be able to make a recommendation or may even have one in house. If not, look on social media for one with plenty of good reviews.

CIS FOR CATWALK

Our top tip for newly-engaged couples is always to hit the wedding shows as soon as you can. It’s the best way to meet suppliers and assemble your W-day team. While you’re there, be sure to experience a catwalk show. It’ll help you find the inspiration you’ve been looking for from silhouettes, to fabrics and designers; as well as guiding you towards a boutique you might want to make an appointment with.

DIS FOR DIARY

Your first boutique appointment will be simultaneously exciting and nerve-wracking. Vicky tells us how to prepare: “To take the pressure away, try not to arrive thinking that you need to find the one. Instead, think more along the lines of finding the right shape and details, and you’ll be surprised that there’s a dress you can’t stop thinking about.” Victoria Walton at Victoria Elaine Bridal (www.victoriaelainebridal.co.uk) takes up the mantle: “Consider your underwear – nude undergarments are best and some dresses work well with a strapless bra. You shouldn’t need to bring anything else with you though unless there’s something you wish to try on with the dresses such as shoes or jewellery. Above all, your appointment should feel relaxed and be focused on your style and choices, nobody else’s.”

E IS ENTOURAGEFOR

Victoria says, “Your entourage could make or break your experience so choose wisely! There is such a thing as too many opinions, so we say two to three guests will be just enough. The people you choose should be able to give you constructive advice based on what you like.”

Vicky at Victoria’s Bridal Boutique says, “Bring the people whose opinions matter the most. You can always bring your whole bride tribe at a later date to help pick accessories or enjoy a special reveal appointment.”

BIS FOR BODY BEAUTIFUL Hayley Freeman-Revell from Victoria Grace Bridal (www.victoriagracebridal.co.uk) says, “We’re lucky to stock two dedicated curvy collections including the stunning EveryBody EveryBride from Essense of Australia. The truth is that no matter what shape or size you are you should be able to look and feel amazing in a bridal gown.”

Vicky Lamb from Victoria’s Bridal Boutique (www.victoriasbridalboutique.co.uk) advises: “Speak to your boutique before your appointment and we can have a selection of dresses ready for you, taking away the overwhelming experience from looking through hundreds of gowns. Try on all different styles, you’ll be surprised by what you feel fabulous in. ”

IS FOR FABRIC

“Fabrics this season range from beautiful sleek satins to floaty tulle gowns. We’re also seeing an increase in all-over modernclassicforbeingnow,arewith“Stunningtellsmaterials,”patternedHayleyus.Vickyagrees:lacescrystaltullessohotrightbutwe’restillaskedgorgeoussatinswithtwists.”

IS FOR GOWNS

Start your search by having a look in your own wardrobe to see specialveerstylessilhouetteswhatandyouusuallytowardsforaoccasion.

You know what feels comfortable on your own body. If you’re not used to something fitted, your wedding day might not be the time to try –so avoid the mermaids and look at the A-lines. Likewise, think about your overall vision. For example, a boho rustic event cries out for something relaxed, soft, non-structured and flowing.

IIS FOR IVORY

HIS FOR HAPPY TEARS

Fear not, when you find the one all is not necessarily as seen on TV with much arm flapping and tears. If you’re not the emotional sort, it’s unlikely you’ll suddenly start while you’re dress shopping, and that’s completely fine. Sometimes, it’ll simply be a case of weighing up your options and feeling satisfied with your decision. As long as you feel comfortable, there’s no reason to doubt your instincts, so don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!

While Queen Victoria made it popular for brides to wear white, having done so on her own wedding day, commitment to this tradition has by and large been relegated to the annals of history. Hayley says, “White has always been difficult to wear in certain fabrics and most bridal shops will stick to ivory now with just a couple of white gowns in their sample collections. Becoming evermore popular are warmer hues such as moscato, almond, rum andVictoriachampagne.”tellsus, “When looking at colours, it’s vital to find one that works with your skin tone. You don’t want to get your photos back and realise your dress leaves you looking pale or brings out your pink undertones. A new dress of ours, Helga by Abella, has been created in a soft champagne, which can warm a skin tone beautifully and for the more daring bride, our Cinderella-inspired dress comes in a soft shade of blue, which is flattering to many skin tones”

JIS FOR JEWELLERY

The fun doesn’t end when you order your dress, as now you get to start shopping for your accessories. It’s generally recommended to do this after you’ve decided on your attire as it’s easier to make the jewellery work with the dress rather than the other way around. The right piece can elevate your look or solve any niggles. Vicky says, “Your choice can depend on your neckline, hairstyle and detail on your dress. We always offer an accessories appointment, so you can try all your options.”

KIS FOR KENT

Sure, we’re a bit biased but we believe Kent has some of the best bridal boutiques in the land. By shopping local you’re supporting nearby businesses and benefiting from the attentive, one-to-one service they so expertly provide. You’ll be treated as the special person you are and shopping for the one will be an experience to treasure.

MIS FOR MONEY

IS FOR LACE

LLace has long been used in wedding dresses largely thanks to its luxurious nature, having historically been labourintensive to produce. Once again Queen Vic is in part responsible for its tofromdesigners,allandcalledguipureChantilly,beautiful.lacedoiliesthinkingdress.lacesportingpopularity,handmadeonherweddingButifyou’renowofgrandma’s–stop!ModernisasvariedasitisAlencon,eyelet,embroidered,(sometimesVenetian),softknit,pointd’espritarepopularwithtoday’scoveringstyleschicandtraditionalvintageandboho.

It’s easy to get swept up in all the gorgeous gowns on offer, so how to avoid busting the budget and before that, how to settle on one? There’s a general rule of thumb on the internet that says you should allocate five to 10 per cent of your overall budget to the dress but it really does depend on what you feel comfortable with and whether this is one of your non-negotiable elements. We recommend above all that you’re realistic about what you want and the rest will fall into place. For example, if you love lots of detailing and heavy beading, an acceptance that this isn’t going to come cheap will stand you in good stead. It’s then up to you whether you want to compromise.

As there are many silhouettes to choose from, there’s also a whole world of necklines, each one having its part to play in complementing or accentuating your figure. Head to Google and research sweetheart, plunging, off-the-shoulder, high, halter, one-shoulder, V, illusion, boat, empire, queen, scoop... we could go on!

IS FOR REVIEWS

As you would when researching any supplier for your W-day team, check out your local bridal boutique’s reviews. They’re understandably proud of the kind words their past brides have shared, so many will have a tab on their website you can look through. Alternatively, Facebook is a good place to see what’s hot. If nothing else, they’ll help to reassure you that you’re in good hands if you’re nervous before your appointment.

OIS FOR ORDERING

Vicky says, “Dresses are still taking a little longer to arrive than they did pre-Covid, so we’d advise ordering your dress no later than nine to 12 months before your wedding. This allows plenty of time for delivery, alterations and customisation.”

Victoria from Victoria Elaine Bridal shares, “Brides often tell us they want to lose a bit of weight before the big day, but don’t delay the shopping or you may find your dream dress can’t be delivered in time. Be reassured though that they can be taken in by two sizes, sometimes more, during alterations. So, find the one and allow your stylist and seamstress to advise on the size.”

PIS FOR PRELOVED

If you’d rather invest your cash in other areas of the wedding, but don’t want to compromise on you look, you may want to consider looking at preloved gowns. Kinder on the pocket, these dresses will have been worn only once, some not at all, and may be no older than last season. Check out www.bridesdressrevisited.com in Sevenoaks.

QIS FOR QUICK

Another budget-saving solution, or idea if you’re short on time, is a sample sale. At the end of the season bridal boutiques will often hold special events where they sell their sample dresses at a reduced cost to give them room in the boutique for the new lines. You’ll be limited on size of course, so be prepared to spend more on alterations. But they’re ready and waiting for you to take away, so no year-in-advance ordering is required.

Some boutiques such as Victoria Grace in Canterbury offer another option if you’re in a hurry. Hayley says, “We have a ready-to-wear collection in store. These gowns can be taken off the peg at heavily reduced prices, but are made by our designers so you’re not lacking in quality or fit.”

IS FOR SLEEVES

Hayley says, “Sleeves are becoming incredibly popular and the options are so flexible now. Lots of our gowns are available with or without them, with detachable sleeves allowing you to change the look from daytime to evening, and you can even choose the length. Our own seamstresses can also add to gowns that don’t already have them, which is a great idea if you’re conscious of your arms or feel like adding your own twist.”

IS FOR TRENDS

Victoria gives us her top trend tips for 2023: “Designers are really investing in fabric and embellishment choices, with lots of elegant mikado satin and glittery options. They’re also modernising necklines, with many opting for scoop or square – excellent for ladies who have a larger bust and want extra support. We’re also seeing more strapless styles coming back in. Pearls and bows are continuing to be used in playful ways, which can be mirrored in your accessories. Check out our uber-modern satin gown, Carmena and sparkly Christina gowns.”

VIS FOR VEIL

“We love a veil! It’s a completely personal preference – some feel it’s a must while others feel uncomfortable. Long veils are definitely more popular for this season and a statement one is definitely the way to go. Our 3D floral veil is one of our favourites for this season,” Hayley tells us. We say it’s definitely worth trying one on before you rule it out.

WIS FOR WILD CARD

YOur golden rule when it comes to wedding-dress shopping is to arrive with a completely open mind, as tunnel vision could lead to a stressful situation if the style you set your heart on just doesn’t work out how you thought. Your stylist or one of your entourage may pull out a wild card, something you never thought you’d go for. Trust us, try it on, it could be the one

IS FOR “YES”

How do you know this is the dress for you? We have some ideas...

❤ You don’t want to take it off.

❤ You compare every other dress to it.

❤ You feel beautiful and confident

❤ You can picture yourself walking down the aisle in it.

❤ You’ve already started accessorising in your mind

IS FOR UNIQUE

Couples are finding more and more wonderful ways to personalise their wedding days, and this is something easily extended to your attire. Vicky at Victoria’s Bridal Boutique says, “We adore taking a dress and adding the perfect touches, whether this be a few extra sparkles, lace details on the train or buttons running down the back. You work with us while we do it so you really do get your dream dress.”

You could even go all out and commission a bespoke gown. Check out www.therobingroom.co.uk, located in the Creative Quarter, Folkestone.

XIS FOR X-PERT

Ok, we cheated a bit, but we couldn’t finish up without extolling the virtues of the amazing local boutique consultants. They have your best interests at heart and they really know their stuff. When you arrive for your appointment you’ll have an initial consultation, which will help your stylist to understand you and your vision. Victoria says, “They’ll then be on hand to direct you to the dress that meets your needs picking up on all the little clues you give in response to the ones you try on. So, be honest with them and trust their expertise.” We like to think of them as the dress whisperers!

IS FOR ZOOM

It’s inevitable your dress will have a little travelling to do – when you collect it and when you take it to the venue, as a minimum. To keep it in tip-top condition invest in a good quality, acid-free garment bag to store it in, and once it’s home keep it away from any harsh light or temperatures. When you’re heading for the venue lay down the seats of the car and place the dress flat if you can, or hang from the garment hook if that fails. Just be sure to hang it up again as soon as you arrive. We’d also highly recommend taking a handheld steamer with you – we speak from experience! Your seamstress will steam it for you once they've worked their magic, but it doesn’t take much for some fabrics to crumple again.

BRIDE & TESTED

As you’ll know if you’ve been following her Bride’s Dairy features, our own CWM bride, Melissa Barker (now Cullen), tied the knot this summer. When her make-up artist advised at her trial that she begin a skincare regime and invest in a moisturiser, exfoliator and eye cream, we leapt into action to find the best products for her. Here, Melissa shares her skincare journey to W-day…

Glossybox Skincare Exfoliating Clay Scrub £13, www.glossybox.co.uk100ml,

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this exfoliating scrub, but after just one use, my skin felt smoother and healthier. Unlike many other exfoliators I’ve tried, this wasn’t too harsh on my skin, but still did a great job of cleaning my pores. After six weeks of use, I still have over half of the 100ml bottle left, so it’s great value for money, and I’d recommend it to anyone.

Ameliorate Replenishing Facial £24,Cream75ml, www.ameliorate.com

I was a little apprehensive about trying this face cream, as more often than not, new products make my skin break out. I was pleasantly surprised that after just one use, my skin felt hydrated and smooth and best of all, it didn’t cause any unwanted reactions. I’ve been using this twice a day for six weeks, and I’ve definitely seen a smoother and softer result.

Perricone MD Cold Plasma Plus + Eye £83, www.lookfantastic.com15ml,

This cream is designed to reduce the look of dark spots and smooth the appearance of lines, wrinkles and uneven texture underneath your eyes. I’m 27 and like to think I don’t have too many wrinkles yet, but I do have dark circles, so I was interested to see whether this cream would help. After six weeks of use, it had decreased the puffiness around my eyes and has made the dark circles less noticeable. It’s left my skin feeling soft and hydrated, and a little goes a long way.

JUST CHILL

When Patchology’s Rosé Sheet Masks landed on my desk in the middle of the summer heatwave I couldn’t wait to get home and chill. Literally that is, as the pack states “served chilled,” so I popped them in the fridge post haste. I’d been suffering with very dry skin, which had me in a panic about Melissa’s impending wedding day and how it would affect the look of my make-up – one more reason to take this mask out for a spin as it’s packed with hydrating hyaluronic acid. Even the pack adorned with champagne glasses looks wedding ready!

So, I smoothed one of these chilled sheets masks onto my hot and bothered face and settled myself on the patio with a glass of wine and a book. Let me tell you, after a scorching day, this was heaven. It calmed my angry skin right down, but not only that, the dry patches were much improved after massaging the remaining serum into my skin. In fact, my make-up artist wasn’t sure what I was worried about when I shared my dry skin woes on the big day, and my foundation went on a dream. Thanks Patchology! £28 for four masks, https://patchology.co.uk

THINK PINK

Premium Spanish spa brand Germaine de Capuccinni will be ditching the usual grey bottle of its hero product, Timexpert SRNS Repair Night Progress Serum, in favour of a pink version in honour of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.

The brand’s most technologically advanced booster serum for youthful, rejuvenated skin is packed with no less than 22 active ingredients. Having evolved over the years, its new formula includes an innovative ingredient that increases the power of absorption by eight, making the serum penetrate deeper for fast, effective results. At night, while your skin is more receptive, it repairs damage and re-activates cellular regeneration. During the day it protects skin against environmental factors and external aggressors. £127.50, https://germaine-de-capuccini.co.uk

RAISING THE BAR

Far from an ordinary bar of soap, le savon lune from silver-based brand ARgENTUM is an ingenious cleanser in solid form, making it perfect for popping into your suitcase as you head off on honeymoon.

Any water content in the product is replaced with the brand’s patented fusion of silver hydrosol and DNA HP, and targets blemishes while leaving skin clean, cushioned and visibly healthier. Great for men or women, the formulation is also enhanced by bentonite, a colloidal clay composed of aged volcanic ash, traditionally used for its healing effect. Combined with other winning ingredients, this ensures a purifying action without dehydrating or irritating your skin, keeping it in check without upsetting its natural balance. £80, www.argentumapothecary.com

SILKY SMOOTH

According to experts, keratosis pilaris or strawberry legs is something that’s present in 80 per cent of adolescents and 40 per cent of adults and is aggravated by heat and sun exposure. At last count #strawberrylegs peaked at 144.9 million views, but is still growing. Enter Luna Daily’s Everything Oil, this skincare saviour is clinically proven to visibly reduce ingrown hairs, scars, stretch marks, dark spots, redness and bumps for smooth, soft skin. Plus, this lightweight and deeply moisturising, multi-tasking oil is gentle enough to use anywhere on your body. £18, https://luna-daily.com

AU NATUREL

If you prefer to de-fuzz at home, check out Parissa’s 100 per cent natural cruelty-free and leaping-bunny-certified wax range. The products and their packaging are all made from sustainable, ethically-sourced, natural materials, so if you care as much about the environment as you do about what you put on your skin, give them a go. Say “no” to synthetic waxes!

There are a wide range of options available depending on your experience and hair type. I tried Parissa Legs & Body Warm Wax (£13). Just pop it in the microwave to warm it up and you’re off! Everything you need is included from spatulas to strips. I decided to wax one leg and shave the other for comparison. There’s a slight chance I over heated the product as my waxed leg was livid with me afterwards. However, the redness had all gone down by the morning and I was left with a silky-smooth result versus the shaved leg, which was dry and still a bit rough. The waxed leg was good to go beyond the spray tan too, so I didn’t need to risk any damage, and lasted past Melissa’s wedding and well into the following week before I needed to take further action. My advice would be to start with the wax strips if you’re not used to waxing at home or have sensitive skin, but I was super-pleased with the results.

TIME TO SHINE

The days of using a wealth of products on your hair are over with TAOH, as the brand makes taking care of your locks a doddle with its line of key products with all-in-one solutions to help you achieve the glossiest, most luxe-looking and healthy tresses no matter the type or condition.

The Hydrate Shampoo (£17) and Conditioner (£18) are now a mainstay in my shower and are infused with organic plant oils that have breathed new life into my hair. By far my favourite product in the range though is the TAOH Oil (£20). Argan, macadamia and kukui oils help to restore the life and shine of locks, while promoting scalp health to encourage growth and vitality. It also prevents split ends, calms frizz and detangles. I used it after washing my hair the morning of Melissa’s wedding and received multiple compliments throughout the day about how shiny it

WEDDING-READY SKIN

We all know stress can play havoc with our skin and let’s face it, planning a wedding can be trying. Peace Out skincare has a range of solution-based products to ensure your complexion is picture-perfect on your big day.

It all starts with the prep and so it’s time to bring your A-game… vitamin A that is! Peace Out’s Retinol Face Stick (£28) and Retinol Eye Stick (£25) offer an encapsulated retinol blend that softens the look of wrinkles and texture without any of the harsh side effects. In addition, the fruit enzyme complex combines papaya and pumpkin to target pores and reveal brighter, smoother-looking skin. Start using three-months prior to the nuptials to ensure you’re wedding ready.

Q&A Beauty

Look and feel your big-day best with help from the professionals

Emma says: I find false lashes finish off a make-up look really well. For any first-time wearer, try a natural-looking lash to start with. I use Ardell Demi Wispies for most of myIfbrides.you’re having a make-up artist they’ll be able to advise what type to go for to suit your eye shape. But if you’re doing them yourself, first you’ll need to trim the ends to ensure the band is the right length for your eyes. Apply a generous layer of glue – my favourite brand is Duo. Allow 30 seconds for it to go tacky, then by looking down into a mirror, aim the false lash at the middle of your lash line and hold in place. Next, stick either end down using a lash applicator or tweezers, which will make this a bit easier. Once dry, blend your own lashes in, squeeze together with the applicator and finish with mascara.

THE ONE THAT I WANT

There are so many wonderful make-up artists in Kent to choose from. How do I pick the right one for me?

Ruth says: Here are a few things to consider...

❤ Check out Instagram and Pinterest for inspiration on looks that you may like and are realistic.

❤ Think about having your bridesmaids’ and mother-of-the-bride’s make-up done. It’s an additional expense and you may think they can do their own, but are they going to be consistent? Why leave it to chance?

❤ Recommendations are always a good starting point, but check out the MUA’s style via their website or social media, as what your friends like may not suit you or the look you want to achieve.

❤ Look for a professional make-up artist who specialises in bridal. They’ll have had experience of any situations that may arise in the morning and weddings can be stressful, so someone who has a calming influence might be a wise choice.

❤ When you’ve found an MUA whose work you like, contact them and include: the date, time you’re required to be ready, how many people need make-up and where you’ll be getting ready.

❤ If the MUA is within your budget and available for your date, then book a trial six to eight weeks before your wedding day. This is when you get the chance to see the make-up and together you can create the perfect look, making sure you’re entirely happy with it. It also gives you an opportunity to get acquainted with your MUA over these two hours, which is important as you should feel comfortable and confident with the one you choose.

❤ Don’t leave booking your make-up or hair to the last minute, as you may find yourself disappointed if the one you choose has already been booked a year in advance.

IEYE-EYE!reallywantto make my eyes stand out on the wedding day and am considering false lashes. I’ve never used them before though. Do you have any tips or advice?

Our happily ever after

County Wedding Magazines’ senior editor Melissa Cullen shares her wedding planning journey Images courtesy of www.chrisblackledgephotography.co.uk

My husband (it still feels weird saying that) and I were engaged for 18 months before we finally tied the knot. Planning our wedding during a global pandemic wasn’t something I ever imagined happening, but thankfully, despite the ups and downs, we managed to have our

special day. I know it’s cliché to say, but we really did have the perfect day, and we wouldn’t have changed a thing. Now that I’m finally Mrs Cullen, I thought I’d take the time to share with you some tips that I learnt from planning our big day...

We chose a rustic property that looked gorgeous all year round. Ourwedding coordinator, Eloise, took care of all the details and madesure everything ran seamlessly. We arranged a last minute meetingwith her to run through the plan for the day, which we found was agreat help and meant we knew exactly what to expect. I recommendbooking a venue with a dedicated wedding coordinator or hiring anexternal company, so that you can relax and enjoy yourself withouthaving to worry.

Flowers can transform any venue into a beautiful space, so choosing the perfect florist was really important to us. If like me, you’re awful with flower names, I’d suggest going for a ready-made package. I told our florist what I liked and left the rest to her - a decision that saved me hours of stress! One thing I didn’t consider was just how many flowers we would need to take home the next day. We gave our friends and family some of the centrepieces as gifts, which they loved, and it meant we didn’t have to take them all home with us - win, win!

I didn’t anticipate how I would feel after purchasing my dress. I felt so much pressure to have this overcome-with-emotion moment when wearing it, that I started to question if I’d made the right decision. My poor bridesmaids had to deal with so many meltdowns about it, but now that the day has been and gone, I can say that the dress was perfect for me. If you start to panic that you’ve made the wrong choice, think about how you felt when you first tried it on and cling to that feeling. I had several photos of myself in the dress that I would obsess over and criticise, and if I could go back in time, I would delete those photos so I wouldn’t waste time worrying. On the day, with your hair and make-up done, you’ll feel amazing, and all those doubts will drift away. Go with your gut, don’t panic about how you should be feeling or what you should be wearing, and do what makes you happy!

Dave and I met our andamazingfriend’swhilephotographerhewasworkingatawedding.Hehasanstylethatwebothloved,wefoundhimreallyeasytobearound.Oneofthebestthingswedidintherun-uptotheweddingwasbookapre-weddingshoot.Wewerebothquitenervousinfrontofthecamera,andthisputusateaseandmeantthatwhenwegottothebigday,webothfeltrelaxedhavingourpicturetaken.

BRIDE’S DIARY 97

As some of you may remember, make-up is not my forte, and I’m embarrassed to tell you that I can’t tell the difference between highlighter, foundation and concealer! I booked a trial with my hair and make-up artist a few weeks before the wedding. If you’re worried about how you’ll look on the day or want to try different styles, I would definitely recommend doing this. I’m so glad I did, and it meant that I felt relaxed knowing that my suppliers had everything under control on the day.

One thing that we learnt after the wedding is that everyone loves cake! We purchased 50 cake boxes as we’ve both been to weddings where it gets left at the end of the night, so we thought that would be more than enough. However, those 50 went within an hour, and we had guests asking for additional pieces, so I would definitely provide more boxes than you need.

Surround yourself with people that you trust and love. My bridesmaids were amazing in the run-up to the wedding and on the day itself. They spoiled me with two hen dos, which were fabulous, a wedding-themed advent calendar full of fun and thoughtful gifts and endless support and love throughout the planning process. Trust me when I say that you will feel calmer on the wedding morning if you’re surrounded by your best friends. They made sure I looked and felt perfect, and I don’t think I could have done it without them.

Dave and I knew we wanted a band for our evening reception thatwould get everyone up and dancing. We booked an amazing trio wholearnt our first dance song and incorporated some of our favouritetunes into their set list. We were a bit worried that people would getbored or restless throughout the day, but all of our guests were quitecontent chatting during the drinks reception, and I’m quite glad wekept things scaled back as it allowed us to catch up with friends andfamily who we hadn’t seen in a long time due to the pandemic.

Our ceremony was performed by a registrar, who we didn’t meet untilthe morning of the wedding. Originally, this made me feel anxious butthe whole process went smoothly, and the ladies conducting our servicewere calming and reassuring. We incorporated promises to each otherin our vows that we felt represented us as a couple. For those of youabout to tie the knot, try and forget about all of the small things, asthere’s nothing more special than looking into your partner’s eyes andtelling them how much you love them in front of your loved ones.

Talk to your friends and family and see if they’d like to have an active role in your day. Our mums were really pleased that we asked them to be our witnesses, and it was a lovely way of including them in the ceremony. My beloved bridesmaid, Kelly, also sang a song accompanied by Dave on the guitar during the wedding breakfast. It was really touching and one of my favourite moments from the day.

Olivia Gibson discovers why Dubrovnik is the perfect honeymoon destination

After what felt like an eternity of not being able to travel due to restrictions, I was so excited to visit the Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel – especially after seeing images of the stunning property online. For the first time in three years, I packed my bags and headed to theDubrovnikairport!

is a wonderful place to visit, evident even from thousands of feet up in the air. The crystal-clear waters, beautiful beaches and picturesque landscapes create the perfect backdrop for honeymoons –no wonder it’s known as the Pearl of the Adriatic. After a short flight, we touched down and the real adventure began!

THE PERFECT SETTING

With a beachfront location and a showstopping backdrop of the Adriatic Sea, the five-star hotel offers some of the best views in Dubrovnik. From the moment I arrived, the staff were so welcoming and accommodating –nothing was too much trouble.

With 292 luxurious rooms, I couldn’t wait to see where I would spend the next few nights and wasn’t disappointed when I entered the spacious deluxe double room. The air-conditioned space featured double sinks, a waterfall shower, bath, seating area and a queen-sized bed. My favourite part of the room was the balcony, where I spent most of my time soaking up the sun on the loungers.

The hotel has everything needed for memorable holidays from restaurants, bars, pools, a spa area and a gym – there’s something for everyone to enjoy. The well-maintained facilities were excellent, and I especially loved the outdoor pool area surrounded by sun loungers – the perfect location to relax your senses.

The beach was located only a few meters from the property and was a wonderful place to relax. With a peaceful atmosphere, crystal-clear waters and the sound of crashing waves, what better location to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life?

FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD

As a massive food lover, I couldn’t wait to try some local delicacies. The hotel is home to three restaurants; each offering something different to cater for all tastes.

When we first arrived at the hotel, we had a welcoming meal in the Momenti Restaurant. Here I enjoyed a prawn and beetroot starter, sea bass with potatoes and asparagus for main and a tasty chocolate cake

for dessert. The food was divine, especially the fluffy and dreamy potatoes!

Each morning I was greeted with a delicious sea of food, from cereals, pastries, granola and fresh fruit to a selection of hot food, including sausages, omelettes, bacon and hash browns. The buffet restaurant was superb, with a laid-back atmosphere and a variety of food on offer. Every night the chefs used fresh ingredients to create a fantastic selection of Mediterranean and international specialities that even the fussiest eaters would enjoy. A highlight of my trip was sitting outside on the terrace during dinner, it had a romantic atmosphere and was the perfect location to watch the sun set. For those chilly evenings, guests can sit indoors while enjoying the stunning views thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows. One of my favourite meals from the restaurant was a spaghetti dish - the flavours were unbelievable and I wish I knew the recipe!

For more of a relaxed meal, the Miramare is a beachfront restaurant that offers panoramic views and a wide range of food. It was here where I enjoyed a chicken BLT, the best sandwich I’d ever eaten, and sipped on some

Wecocktails. hadafarewell

meal at the Momenti Restaurant on our last night at the hotel’s sister property – Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel. After a short walk, we arrived at the sophisticated space and enjoyed a goose liver pâté with puff pastry pears, followed by scallops and a hazelnut and chocolate cake to finish. Croatia is well known for its wine, so of course I had to try a few glasses.  destination The ultimate

HONEYMOONS 101

I couldn’t fault the service, the staff were always very attentive, friendly and professional. My glass was never empty, and I felt thoroughly looked after.

TIME TO EXPLORE

What better way to explore Dubrovnik than on an electric tuktuk? The tour started at the portside market in Gruz Harbour where we got a chance to see the local area and fishermen. We had so much fun whizzing around the streets and enjoying the incredible views, especially from the Franjo Tuđman Bridge. I loved visiting the top of Srđ Mountain and seeing the beautiful islands off the coast. The guides were excellent and they shared so much history and knowledge.

The hotel is only a few minutes from the charming Old Town, which is enclosed by Medieval walls, and is a must-visit destination. Game of Thrones fans would recognise the spaces from the much-loved show as the town was a filming destination for some very iconic scenes.

In the Old Town you’ll find cobbled streets, bars, shops and restaurants, alongside many awe-inspiring historical features and architecture. The town has survived chronicled events, such as the 17th-century earthquake and The Croatian War of Independence in the 1990s.

REST AND RELAX

Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel is home to the Balance Mediterranean Spa by Valamar. Here we truly indulged in the facilities and treatment menu. I had a 35-minute de-stress massage which I was nervous about at first, as I’d never had a massage before, but the team were fantastic and put my mind at ease. My body felt amazing and I will be getting another one soon! I walked out of the room completely at peace and headed straight to the waterbeds in the relaxation room. There are many other treatments guests can book too including facials, pedicures, manicures, body treatments and more.

The facilities in the spa were great with a steam room and saunas, indoor pool and, for ladies-only, The Afrodita Spa.

Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel is perfect for those on a budget who still want to enjoy pure luxury. This four-spa hotel has many stylish rooms, a refurbished lobby and pool area.

FUN IN THE SUN

I highly recommend visiting the Coral Beach Club Dubrovnik for those staying in either hotel. With beach activities, excellent dining, entertainment, bars and spa elements, this popular space is not one to miss! The food here was fantastic and it’s the ideal space to spend a few hours relaxing with a cocktail in hand.

THE FINAL VERDICT

I couldn’t fault my stay at the Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel. If you’re searching for the perfect honeymoon destination, look no further. The hotel provides the most romantic setting to relax and enjoy quality time with loved ones.
