don’t know about you, but I can hardly believe that this madness has been going on for a year now. It’s mindboggling to think of how different life was back when Covid was just the stuff of movie plots. Using the word “Zoom” in every other sentence, working in one’s pyjamas, and deciding whether to turn to the black market for toilet rolls are all things that we never imagined would become a reality. But in looking back over these surreal times I’ve also been reflecting on the good. Like most of you, I’ve celebrated a lockdown birthday – yep, I’ve turned 40 since I last spoke to you! I’ll admit to feeling disappointed that my planned celebrations couldn’t go ahead, but what meant even more was the outpouring of love and thoughtfulness from friends and family. So, enough about me. What about you? How’s your checklist coming along? With spring ahead of us, we’re getting excited about al fresco “I dos,” pastel hues and beautiful blooms. As are our county’s suppliers who, determined not to have their creativity stifled by the pandemic, have been hard at work (safely and when permitted) putting together no less than six styled shoots for you this issue. We’ve got everything from an afternoon tea in a castle to boho vows in the woods. What’s more if you’re newly engaged, catering should be at the top of the list along with the venue, so don’t miss our annual wedding food and drink feature over on page 61. There’s plenty more fabulousness on every page, so I’ll delay you no longer. Enjoy and keeeep planning!

AUSTEN ELEGANCE

Chafford Park Estate, a family-run wedding venue located on the Kent/ Sussex border, has added its incredible on-site Georgian Manor House to its wedding package. Quintessentially English and central to the 300-acre estate, this Jane Austen-lover’s dream offers you the opportunity to spend the weekend being pampered and relaxing ahead of the big day. Now, you can plan your celebrations utilising the Estate’s two granary barns, woodland and lawn without the need to worry about accommodation. Sarah Thompson, director and founder, says, “We’re thrilled to offer our previous family home, the lovingly re-decorated Georgian Manor House, to our couples so that they can experience their wedding over three days. The large rooms, synonymous with the period, offer plenty of space for the bride and her entourage to get ready, and waking up just a short stroll across the lawn to where they’ll be getting married really adds to the sense of occasion.” Check out https://chaffordparkestate.co.uk

If you’re seeking an intimate wedding spot amongst glorious woodland, you’ll be delighted to hear that the team at Elope have now added Bishops Wood, Ashford, to their roster of venues. Known locally as Forty Acre Woods, this private land, neglected for so long, has recently been purchased by Gary Stammers and his wife, Pauline. The location is now being lovingly revived, transforming it into a magical and enchanting al fresco wedding venue. With nature as your backdrop, you can now host a humanist ceremony or blessing beneath the towering canopy of native trees. Mother nature does a pretty good job as venue stylist, particularly during the spring when the wild foxgloves and https://louisgorringe.co.uk dainty white-petaled anemones are awakened. You might even have a Snow White moment and encounter some friendly wildlife since deer, foxes, badgers, woodpeckers, nuthatches and owls all call Bishops Wood home. In addition to tying the knot here, you can book to stay in onsite Acorn Lodge, a recently renovated four-berth mobile home, complete with all the mod cons. Outside, there’s a firepit, barbecue, seating area and private parking. To ensure this exclusive venue retains its natural ecology, heritage and beauty there are only a select number of weddings permitted each year, so if this is for you, don’t hesitate to get in touch. Head over to www.e-lope.co.uk for more.

PEACE OF MIND

Wedding dates are filling up fast for 2021-23 over at Mercure Tunbridge Wells, and one of its couples’ main concerns is: what if our wedding is affected by Covid-19? It’s a question you’ll no doubt have on your lips too, so be sure to check with your own venue. We asked Sophie Brunger, events manager at Mercure Tunbridge Wells, about their policy. Sophie says, “Couples who make a new wedding booking with us for 2021 or 2022 will be able to change their date once, at no extra charge. Plus, any payment they’ve made towards their wedding will be moved over to the new date, meaning they won’t lose out on any money already paid. What’s more, any bedrooms booked for the newlyweds and their guests will also be moved over.”* Having stayed open throughout the pandemic to accommodate and assist keyworkers, the team are adept at keeping guests safe and have received certification from VisitEngland and the AA confirming that required standards are met. The venue is also part of the Accor Hotels ALLSAFE programme, which holds it to standards above local and international hygiene requirements. Sustainable success

The Oak Barn, a family-run wedding and events venue in the heart of Kent, is one of six finalists for The Sustainability and Environmental Impact accolade at the Rural Business Awards 2020/21. Frame Farm’s Grade II listed barns are grouped around a traditional farmyard and provide a stunning setting for weddings. The Oak Barn, The Byre and Weaver’s Cottages have been lovingly brought back to life as part of a three-and-a-half-year restoration project and offer state-of-the-art facilities, beautifully incorporated into the fabric of the historical buildings. Tim Maw, director and co-owner of the venue says, “We’re extremely proud of this recognition as it was our vision to restore the derelict farm, give it a new use that would also create economic growth in the rural community, and do so in an environmentally responsible way.” Becoming a national finalist builds on the venue’s success as runner up in the Best Rural Start Up Business in their first year of trading. Along with the rest of the hospitality industry, owners Deana and Tim have endured a difficult second year due to the pandemic, but Tim says, “Becoming a national finalist is a great morale boost.” Find out more about tying the knot sustainably at The Oak Barn at www.the-oak-barn.co.uk

IN TO THE BLUE The latest fragrances from iconic brand Tiffany & Co., Tiffany & Love Eau de Toilette for Him and Tiffany & Love Eau de Parfum for Her, were created as a tribute to modern love and the pairing is perfect for nearlyweds tying the knot. REAL WEDDINGS

C

hristina and Andrew met in Berlin in 2016. Andrew was there on a business trip, and Christina, who is German, was on a weekend away celebrating her friend’s birthday. Both were sitting with mates at neighbouring tables when the two groups got talking and the pair noticed each other straight away. “We had a really great night, dancing and laughing, and ended up swapping numbers,” Christina says. At that point Andrew was living in Helsinki, Finland, and Christina in Frankfurt, so despite not being able to see each other for a few months, they managed to keep in touch. “Andrew was travelling a lot for his job and I’d meet him at some of the destinations where he was working at the weekends. So, our early days were spent on really cool city breaks, which we still love to do,” Christina explains. Following several months of long-distance dating, during which time Andrew had moved back home, Christina got the opportunity with her job to relocate to the UK also, and so they lived happily ever after! The proposal almost came as much of a surprise to Andrew as it did to Christina! The couple were enjoying a mini-break in the Cotswolds to celebrate the date they met, and while enjoying a lovely evening meal, they joked about how there had been much speculation from friends and family about whether Andrew would pop the question at some point over the weekend. Although he hadn’t planned to, this sent his mind into overdrive: “Why wouldn’t I ask this weekend?” he thought. So, while strolling back to the hotel and without any further ado, he asked Christina to marry him. They chose the engagement ring together in Oxford the very next day. On the venue checklist was somewhere they could host the whole day from ceremony to celebrations, was big enough to accommodate 150 guests, had a relaxed atmosphere, and was somewhere they could decorate themselves. After much research, they both liked the look of Ruffynes Barn, Ashford, and as soon as they arrived for a viewing, they were in love. As luck would have it, a date had just become available following a cancellation that was right around the time they had their hearts set on, and they booked it on the spot. Join us as we find out more about the big day from bride Christina…

SETTING THE SCENE Since the barn was a blank canvas, the couple got their wish and were able to create the venue styling themselves. Christina planned everything to perfection from the table layout to the floral pieces created by her mum and sister. The pair designed a wedding logo, which adorned the stationery suite including invitations, menus, and thank you cards. It also featured on their wedding favours – small round magnets in their palette colours of navy and burgundy. The idea was that guests could use it to hold their pictures from the photo booth as a lasting memory of the day. The centrepieces were large floral arrangements featuring burgundy blooms. “We didn’t have a particular type of flower in mind, it was more about the colour and what we could get hold of in burgundy at the flower market at that time of year,” Christina explains. The table centres were accompanied by a menu, along with a signature wedding cocktail list, candles and some small decorative copper ornaments. In keeping with the relaxed vibe for the day the couple decided only to show guests which table they should sit at, rather than assign particular seats with place names. They chose English and German cities for the table names, with guests from the UK sitting at tables with German names and vice versa. “We used travel guides from each city to show which table was which accompanied by a note to tell guests they could take them home, as long as they promised to send us a postcard if they decided to visit,” Christina tells us.

FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD The couple opted for a buffet wedding breakfast. Guests were offered a delicious selection of dishes and sides, finished off with dessert. “The highlight was a little freezer with a selection of ice cream pots, provided by our excellent caterer, Sally from Simply Catering Kent, who also owns 35 

Simply Ice Cream,” the bride explains. Later in the evening everyone enjoyed a selection of cheese and crackers. As neither bride nor groom have a particularly sweet tooth, they hadn’t planned to have a wedding cake, but this disappointed Andrew’s parents so much that they handed the responsibility over to them! The result was an elegant square-tiered fruit cake, decorated in the wedding colour palette, complete with a picture of the happy couple printed on it.

REAL WEDDINGS

LOOKING THE PART Christina looked stunning in Morilee by Madeline Gardener creation, Laurie. During her dress research she’d fallen in love with the idea of pockets. She tried on a couple of different styles at her Bromley Brides’ appointment, but ultimately fell head-over-heels for this pocketed design. Andrew wore a three-piece navy suit with a grey waistcoat, burgundy tie and white shirt paired with brown shoes. The groomsmen all wore the same with the exception of their waistcoats, which were blue, allowing the groom to stand out in his grey version. The beautiful bridesmaids wore long burgundy dresses, which they chose themselves. “We wanted everyone to feel comfy and happy on the day,” Christina explains.

TIME TO CELEBRATE A live bagpiping band provided a fanfare to the bride’s entrance, as well as playing for an hour or so following the ceremony. This was one of Christina’s highlights, “They really created a special atmosphere,” she says. It was similarly a special moment for Andrew who says, “I have Scottish heritage on my grandad’s side, so it meant a lot to my family.” Later on, a DJ kept everyone entertained and on the dancefloor. “Dale understood the mood we wanted to create for the evening straight away. He had a feel for the direction to take it in to make sure everyone was enjoying themselves,” Christina recalls. The dancing was fuelled by the super-fun cocktails created by the bride and groom, since the barn permitted the couple to stock the bar themselves. A highlight of the evening was a flashmob dance routine organised and choreographed to Starships by Nicki Minaj by the maid-of-honour. “She sent all the guests a video teaching them the dance. It was really surprising and so much fun,” Christina remembers.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS The bride says, “The first time I got really nervous on the day was the moment I arrived at the venue and saw everyone. Then the bagpipers started playing as my bridesmaids walked down the aisle, and I still had to wait behind the building!” For Andrew, the morning was the most nail-biting time. He says, “I just wanted everything to go perfectly. Christina had worked so hard on the preparations and I was worried it might rain, or the bus might break down! But as soon as I saw her walk down the aisle toward me, I knew the day was going to be perfect.” The couple would especially like to thank their photographer Nicola Tulip. Christina explains: “She offered us a pre-wedding shoot, which allowed us not only to get comfortable with her, but also put us at ease ready to be in front of the camera on the big day. This meant that everything went brilliantly and the results were amazing. We now have our special day captured perfectly forever. Plus, so many of our guests complimented her on her style of staying in the background while being able to control the crowd for group shots when needed.”

THE BRIDE’S WORDS OF WISDOM “Get all of the planning out of the way early. Ask friends to help and have suppliers that you have a good feeling about and can trust, allowing you to relax and enjoy the day. “Don’t worry about what might go wrong on the day. If something does go awry, it doesn’t matter. Just enjoy every single moment with the love of your life and your guests.” 37 

REAL WEDDINGS

lthough Marie and Prince hit it off when they met at a cocktail bar in London through friends, it wasn’t until five months later that they became inseparable when their paths crossed again at a party. Prince proposed on a beautiful sunny Sunday at Goodnestone Park near Canterbury. They’d been for a picnic with their son, Blake, before taking a stroll around the beautiful gardens. Once they reached a secluded spot, Prince got down on one knee and delivered a heartfelt speech before asking Marie to marry him. “Of course, I said ‘yes’ straight away. It was a complete surprise,” Marie remembers. The romantic proposal was doubly meaningful as Prince had perfectly planned it to coincide with the fourth anniversary of the day they met. Both being spiritual, the couple had their hearts set on a church wedding. So, where better than, St Mary’s Kennington, in the village where they hoped to raise their family? When it came to the reception venue Marie explains, “We loved the beautiful deep red foliage that covers the façade of Eastwell Manor, as well as it’s grandeur and charm.” Read on as the bride, Marie, shares her account of their October big day… I wore a princessstyle dress. I loved all of the detail with a lace bodice, diamante belt, big tulle skirt and sheer back. It was the perfect complement to the grandeur of the venue.

Prince wore a dark blue three-piece suit with a pink cravat, which set him apart from his groomsmen who accessorised with pink ties.

An amazing classical singer performed during our ceremony. The music was a mixture of hymns and songs that were meaningful to us. 42

The bridesmaids wore dark pink fishtail gowns, which were the exact shade of the groomsmen’s ties.

REAL WEDDINGS

For centrepieces we hired blossom trees and scattered faux autumn leaves on the tables. The flowers were arranged by my mother and grandmother to decorate the base of the trees. All of our flowers were organic and grown at Blooming Green near Maidstone. The florist there created beautiful bouquets for my bridesmaids and I. Then the day before the wedding my mum, one of my bridesmaids and myself handpicked the rest of the flowers. This meant we had an abundance of blooms that were both local and affordable. Our table plan was made up of a set of wooden frames with a burgundy floral design. The tables were named after parks that were significant to us, including Goodnestone Park where we got engaged.

Our big-day bake was a three-tier vanilla cream sponge with a bespoke topper.

Also decorating the venue were nine-foot blossom trees, a candy floss cart and pumpkin lanterns carved by Prince’s family.

We sourced pine cones from our garden, spraypainted them gold and put them to use as place names. My sister did the calligraphy for the cards, which were attached to the cones. 43 

We hired a sound system for the evening’s entertainment and the groom and his cousin were in charge of the playlist. It was personal to us and included a combination of Irish, African and British floorfillers.

The first dance was a very special and emotional moment. Our son joined us for the second half, which meant the world.

We spent the day in a bubble of happiness. We poured our hearts into planning our big day, so it was amazing to see our vision come to life. Plus, our families are from overseas, so we had guests travel from Canada, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Ireland to be with us. It was amazing to have all of our loved ones in the same place.

Jim, our toastmaster, created a jovial atmosphere throughout the whole reception. He personally introduced each guest during the line up with funny quips and behind the scenes he coordinated timings ensuring everything ran seamlessly.

N

o sooner had they started dating, after meeting through mutual friends, than Mandy and Rob knew they were right for each other. So, when true love’s at stake, why let the grass grow? They moved in together the following year. “Rob planned his proposal perfectly, but I ruined it!” Mandy says. He’d booked a table at a restaurant in The Shard for her birthday and the idea was to pop the question over dessert. However, Mandy didn’t want any – “This was unusual for me, as I love dessert,” she tells us. So, plan B was put into action, patience paid off, and Rob finally managed to ask her when they got home that evening. The couple knew they’d found their perfect venue in Hadlow House. Mandy explains, “Our families live in opposite directions from us, so this was ideal as there’d be plenty of accommodation for them. Plus, the reception room was perfect and the gardens are beautiful.” Join us as the bride shares her treasured memories of the couple’s July wedding day…

We chose bridesmaids’ dresses that all three of my adult bride tribe liked the style of, and we were able to order the exact shade of purple we wanted. We were also able to order similar dresses for our three eldest nieces and it was important to us to have them be part of the bridal party. Harpist Carys Hughes played during our ceremony and welcome drinks. She’s very talented and sounded amazing. She played a range of older and more modern songs, which we were able to choose from her extensive repertoire.

The wedding car looked great and was important to us because it allowed us to have a little bit of alone time on the journey from our ceremony in Chislehurst. We were surprised by how fast it could travel, until the driver told us it was actually a new car designed to look vintage!

Our flowers were beautiful. Jackie from April Haven made the bouquets in exactly the colours we wanted, to match our bridesmaids’ dresses, and our centrepieces were simple and elegant to complement our theme. Rob’s mum and aunt also decorated the church with flowers.

We wanted a traditional-style cake decorated with flowers to complement my bouquet. Nicola from Such Fun Cakes is very talented and the sugar flowers looked incredible.

Throughout the day we enjoyed canapés, a four-course wedding breakfast, and a buffet all supplied by Hadlow Manor. All of the food was excellent and there was plenty of it. We didn’t want our guests to be hungry!

My bridesmaids organised a dance class as part of my hen do, where we learnt a routine to (I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life from Dirty Dancing. We were a bit unsure about performing it on the wedding night given our long dresses, but we gave it our best shot and guests loved it!

ECLECTIC Modern whimsy meets traditional rustic, with a touch of vintage

T

o lift the spirits during these troubled times, wedding planner Black Sheep Events got together with new Kent venue Sawkinge Barn to curate this wonderfully eclectic shoot. “We took over the barn and surrounding area and transformed it into a rustic-meets-boho wedding space,” says Charlotte Legge of Black Sheep Events. The palette was entirely governed by nature as the flowers Xyris Botanicals’ Laura grows are seasonal, so the gorgeous pinks and peaches that were available at the time formed the backdrop. “These colours showed off the best of the Kent countryside and had a romantic yet modern style, so they were extended to the cake, crockery and stationery,” Charlotte explains. The furniture and décor sat well within this charming venue, illustrating that the traditional rustic nature of the barn and a modern boho vibe blend seamlessly together for a totally on trend wedding style. 53 

N

othing brings people together quite like a hearty meal. Throughout the ages the idea of drinking and dining together as a shared experience has been the key to shaping our culture – from the great Tudor banquets to the Edwardian elegance of dressing for dinner. Nowadays, you only have to turn on the television to be bombarded with celebrity chefs, food-related competitions and even entire channels devoted to the creation of delicious dishes. Let’s face it: we British love our food. It’s probably already occurred to you then, that by the time you’ve said “I do” and been pronounced newlyweds, your guests’ minds will already be turning to the wedding breakfast. This celebratory feast lies at the heart of the revelries, but it doesn’t end, or even begin there. Your wedding day, whilst undeniably joyous, will be a long one and adrenaline will only get you so far. Be sure to keep you and your loved ones fuelled and dancefloor-

ready by making sure there are grazing opportunities aplenty. With the cuisine on point your day will be the hot topic of conversation among your nearest and dearest for months and years to come. Having said that, the way in which couples are shaping their wedding days is inevitably evolving as a result of the pandemic. The service of food and drink has been a massive part of this and Kent’s wedding caterers have been meeting these challenges head on. Daniel Clark from Invicta Food Design explains, “We’re having to be flexible since couples are facing so much uncertainty. But they’re also becoming a lot more creative and we’re doing less traditional types of food service to work safely within guidelines.” So, with trends shifting, possibly more in the last year than at any other time, we decided it was time to catch up with Kent’s talented crop of wedding food aficionados to get the inside track.

The drinks reception is likely your first opportunity to show your guests some hospitality and set the tone for treats to come. Clare Smith of Touchays Event Caterers tells us, “Instead of light bites served in the traditional way, we’re being asked by couples to create inspiring, ingenious and dazzling ways of presenting luxury canapés outdoors. For example, we’ve designed individual mini-grazing boxes to ensure the couple’s guests gasp ‘wow’ as they open them up.” On a hot sunny day, the sweet-toothed among you might be looking around for something superspecial. Rebecca and Cliff Bolton from Treats on a Tricycle say, “Why not bring an exciting twist to your post-ceremony canapés? Not only do we serve real dairy farm ice cream and sorbet from Purbeck Ice Cream, but we’ve also just launched a new menu, using their delicious ices from Dorset. One popular option is serving at the church after the ceremony while the photos are being taken. The look and expressions of surprise are priceless.”

While we all hold traumatic memories of the boring, mass-catering blandness of yesteryear, it’s time to put that all behind us. Wedding menus in the 2020s are creative, delicious, top-quality, personality driven, and even theme fitting. Whether your preference is for a seated traditional meal or for the informality of festival-style dining, you’ll find the priority for our experts is the quality of produce. Clare tells us, “We’re seeing couples focus on their true preferences – a kind of back-to-their-roots cuisine. We believe there’ll be more attention on seasonal and locally-sourced food, paired with local wines and bubbles.” Daniel agrees: “Two things we’re being regularly asked for are plant-based options and locally-sourced food, which we can do as three-course meals, bowl food or stalls. It’s great to work with local producers and farmers as there’s so much on offer in Kent.” As Daniel has already pointed out, the increase in demand for more vegetarian and vegan offerings has led caterers to develop a much wider range of tasty treats for the food-conscious. Rebecca and Cliff are similarly very aware of the ever-growing need to meet requests for vegan ice cream. They tell us, “We’re proud to be able to offer three flavours that are all free from dairy and gluten, as well as being clear of artificial flavourings and colourings. We feel it’s important to cater for all dietary needs and aim to provide a dessert for everyone, even those with a nut allergy. No one is left out! What’s

62

more, thanks to our self-sufficient tricycles that don’t require an electric hook up or noisy generator, we can provide another tick for the environmentally-conscious couple.” With restrictions on guest numbers likely to continue into the foreseeable future, couples are finding they have more to spend on the important elements. Daniel explains, “We’re getting bookings for three-day affairs – dinner in a private let the day before, food on the wedding day, then a big family breakfast or brunch the following day.” Clare is experiencing a similar effect: “We’re being asked to design not three-course meals, but five-course banquets. We’re relishing the opportunity to get even more creative, elevating every dish and embracing the seasons. We plan to push the boat out for the grand finale, the dessert, combining exquisite flavours and aromas to make the mouth water.” With an intimate wedding comes the option to break from tradition while being practical in the face of restrictions. “Having an afternoon tea for your wedding breakfast and a barbecue in the evening avoids the need for pre-ordering, so couples can be sure about guest numbers,” Daniel explains. “Festival-style weddings are continuing to grow in popularity. In our packages we offer couples the option to choose three food stalls for the day and one for the evening, we also serve some of the dishes as bowl food. This gives them a great range of choice and fits well with a relaxed boho wedding,” he continues.

If you’re looking for a bouquet to last, allow us to introduce you to Charlotte, who delights in helping couples step away from the traditional and create individual pieces that reflect their personalities and fit their day perfectly. A passionate felter, artist and lover of all things wedding, she established her alternative wedding flower business, specialising in felt wedding bouquets, quirky buttonholes and luxury textile wedding gifts in 2012. Working from her home in Kent, Charlotte hand-crafts characterful bouquets and accessories, which come to life through a collaborative process between herself and her brides. “Each piece is lovingly handmade and hand-sewn,” she explains. This alternative to fresh-cut flowers will last forever, so if you’re dividing your celebration into a more intimate ceremony followed by a big bash when restrictions are lifted, it’s the perfect choice to last through both. www.tomjeavonsphotography.co

Jason Fanti, suit stylist and owner of Kent-based Suityou, designs and creates suits for his clients from a wide selection of fabrics, linings and buttons. He offers a one-on-one service, which has proven popular for grooms wanting something more refined, without spending £5,000 on a Saville Row suit. Jason tells us, “My aim is to make wearing a suit accessible to anyone with an interest, helping men to find the confidence and swagger to do so.” He continues, “There can be a lot of psychology involved in a father-of-the-bride pulling off an extra-special suit for his daughter’s wedding. Likewise, for a groom looking to freshen up his look with a suit that stands apart from one he might wear day-to-day for work. The dynamics and impact of this form of attire are huge.” Jason describes his role as a “suit stylist broker,” he’s the go-to guy when you need a suit for a special occasion, and his knowledge extends far beyond tailoring one-of-a-kind looks. He can also offer invaluable advice on purchasing the best ready-made suits and also how to hire them for the big day. He explains, “A lot of people blindly waste money purchasing something that’s not cost effective or correct for their body type, which means it ultimately gets thrown away. I see it all the time: people buying a bad branded £600 off-the-rack suit from a high street salesperson who doesn’t care. Why not spend the same on a made-to-measure version from someone who cares a great deal and that will last you 20 years? My point is this: if you wanted a Ferrari, wouldn’t you want to buy it from a person who loves, lives and breathes Ferraris and knows everything there is to know about them?” Well, of course you would!

MEET NATALIE TOWELL, NAVETTE JEWELLERY STUDIO www.navettejewellery.co.uk |

@navettejewellerystudio

Aided by the wonders of modern technology Navette Jewellery Studio has continued to consult with its couples and create stunning pieces of jewellery throughout the difficult circumstances of the past year. Natalie says, “The desire to have something handmade and uniquely yours in design holds great value in the heart.” As a bespoke jeweller, she specialises in creating the perfect design for her clients incorporating their wishes and ideas, and takes great pleasure in witnessing their joy and excitement as she brings the pieces to life. When she’s not creating engagement and wedding rings, or remodelling sentimental items of jewellery, Natalie will be continuing with her collections throughout the year. This will feature exciting additions to her wedding ring range as well as an emphasis on colour combinations in a group of exciting new designs. At Navette Jewellery Studio you have the opportunity to make your own wedding rings in a one-day workshop, which will be up and running again as soon as it’s safe. Here, you’ll be guided through each step of the handmaking process by a professional jeweller as you create these eternal symbols of your love for one another. Natalie explains, “There’s nothing more sentimental than knowing your ring was made by the one you love. Couples who were able to create their own rings in between lockdowns last year told me that with all the upset caused by various changes to their wedding plans, coming in for their workshop was the one tangible thing that gave them back some of that lost wedding excitement.”

MEET MICHELA MORIELLO, THE DANDELION ART www.thedandelion.art @thedandelionart

74

Born from a genuine curiosity spanning various art forms, The Dandelion Art, based in Dartford, is a one-woman craft studio with an impeccable eye for detail and a love for creating handmade bespoke stationery for unforgettable weddings. Michela’s art feeds off the emotions, feelings and dreams that couples want to capture on paper. Her designs combine intricate line drawings of her couples’ historical venues, with delicate floral watercolours and elegant, handwritten calligraphy. With sustainability an increasing concern for many couples, they value her use of handmade papers, organic natural dyes and sustainable fabrics. Michela tells us, “A wedding day is special in many ways, and I find stationery to be the first memento, created by a couple, to reach and include their families and friends. It’s something they’ll be able to keep and cherish forever.” We asked her what advice she’d give to couples who’ve reached this stage in the planning process, and she told us, “I’d suggest they think about their story and what it is that makes them unique. I always recommend this as the first step even before they start looking at inspiration from other wedding stationery, as it’ll give their theme more focus, meaning and personality.”

HANDMADE IN KENT MEET CHARLOTTE BAKER, CHARLOTTE BAKER HANDMADE JEWELLERY www.charlottebaker.co.uk |

@cbakerjewellery

Charlotte is a Kent-based jewellery designer and maker, creating custommade, one-of-a-kind pieces. She uses traditional techniques with a focus on hand-piercing, which requires great skill and dexterity to saw intricate designs out of silver. She says, “I’ve loved drawing, making things and just generally being creative since I was young. So, studying art throughout my education seemed like the natural route for me to follow. Now I get to create unique jewellery for a living.” Her gorgeous contemporary collection includes rings, cufflinks, tie accessories, necklaces, earrings, bridesmaids’ and groomsmen gifts. Charlotte specialises in commissions and works with 925 sterling silver and 9ct gold to create super-special personalised pieces to suit her clients’ colour scheme, theme and budget.

MEET ZOË DOWLE, BRIDES BY ZOË www.weddingdresskent.co.uk @bridesbyzoe

Zoë has had a passion for bridalwear from her school days when she began to show a talent for needlework, art and design. She explains, “It was the natural path to follow after school and I was lucky enough to advance my knowledge at The London College of Fashion, where I spent a fantastic three years learning about design.” After graduating, Zoë successfully launched her own business, creating bespoke bridal and eveningwear. Fast forward to the present day and the designer is delighted to have launched her own private off-the-peg label available at her boutique in Canterbury, Brides by Zoë. She handmakes each gorgeous gown – a dream come true for the bride seeking individuality and affordability. Zoë was inspired to set up the brand by brides coming into the boutique looking for certain design and practical elements that were actually quite difficult to find in wedding dress collections at the time. “I felt inspired to start designing again, offering fashion-forward bridal gowns. I’m finding that sleeves, in many different styles, are hugely popular. We’ve moved away from the traditional full-length sleeve covered in lace and sparkle though. Now we have bell shapes, flutter sleeves and cuffs,” she says. Alongside, her own stunning range, Zoë is also proud to stock the whimsical, bohemian collection by Wendy Makin, and Willoughby by Watters.

EXPERT ADVICE

www.jamesgristphotography.co.uk

Our experts tell us how to create a stunning springtime wedding

YOU DO YOU

www.pennyyoungphotography.com

What tips can you give on making an intimate wedding day super-special? The best advice I can give is to have the wedding you want that reflects you as a couple. Focus on the things that are important to you: if you love food have the seven-course meal; if you’re outdoorsy, utilise your venue’s outdoor space with your photographer; if you love flowers have the archway and huge arrangements! I find that smaller weddings really highlight the love between a couple as well as the sense of happiness and joy amongst the family and friends present. Most of all, enjoy every minute. It sounds like a cliché, but the day goes so fast, so don’t get hung up on minor details. Shelley Holmes, www.soltonmanor.com

A ROOM WITH A VIEW

Our venue is gorgeous inside and out. How can we make the most of it with our wedding photos? The first step is to make sure you tell your photographer why you chose your venue and what you love about it. Tell them about the specific area you like and then let them use their creativity to capture you in these locations on the day. Make sure you’ve allowed enough time for your photos, in particular your couple photo shoot, as feeling rushed is the worst and you’ll want to make sure that you’ve had enough photos in your favourite spots. I’d recommend breaking your couple photos into two sessions, the first before your reception and the second later in the day. Your venue will look very different in the early evening light and then again when it’s completely dark. Finally, be sure to choose a photographer who can capture the style of images you really love. Penny Young, www.pennyyoungphotography.com 79 

SPRING HAS SPRUNG

How can we reflect the wonderful feel of springtime in our wedding flowers? You can evoke the carefree airy feeling of the season in your wedding flowers whatever your chosen style. It’s more of a mood than a theme. Spring blooms are a magical mix of delicate textures, sublime colours and symbolism. For example, tulips represent perfect love. In addition to beauty, spring flowers have an abundance of scent, which you’ll forever remember. Think about choosing flower varieties that are available only during the spring. There are more than you think with plenty of unusual options too such as fritillaria, muscari and jasmine. Make the most of the seasonality as this is when they’ll be in prime condition, better value for money and more sustainable. For the pure essence of spring, choose vibrant colours such as crisp white, sunny yellow, zingy lime green and sky blue. Alternatively, embrace delicate pastel shades of palest pink, lilac and peach for a gentle romantic feel. Think light textured foliage, delicate branches of blossom, mimosa and trailing jasmine. There’s a spring answer to any style. A wrap of pure white tulips for a classic look, to a riot of colour and texture using lilac, ranunculus, clematis and anemone for a boho feel. Why not incorporate planted spring bulbs into your table centres, tucked into wooden crates or vintage glassware? Guests can take these home at the end of the eventing to plant in their own gardens and remember your day. Diana Critchell, www.flowersoffoxhall.co.uk

EASY AS ONE, TWO, THREE

Help! I’m newly engaged. Where on earth do I start with my planning?

We’re tying the knot at a barn venue with a rustic springtime theme. How can we make sure our stationery ties in? The two best ways to tie your stationery to your theme are by carefully selecting the card used and the details of the design. ❤ Card. We recommend opting for a card with a natural, rustic feel such as a brown Kraft card, which is often 100 per cent recycled too. ❤ Colours. Those often found in nature during the spring are ideal here. Opting to include greens and blues, alongside warm hues such as orange and red, will add the feeling of the season to your stationery. ❤ Floral. Rustic wedding stationery is even better when combined with natural design elements. We always recommend opting for a floral design for this special season, and this works beautifully for barn weddings. ❤ Vintage or traditional. If floral design elements don’t fit well with your theme, another popular vibe is vintage. Typewriter-style print or classical fonts are gorgeous choices. www.yetiphotography.co.uk

RUSTIC BLISS

Firstly, congratulations! Here are my top tips for getting started on your planning – do take your time and enjoy it. ❤ Step one – talk to your partner. Have an in-depth conversation about what you both would and wouldn’t like from ceremony type and venue style to the time of year and a rough guest list. ❤ Step two – research costs and put together an approximate budget. Speak to some venues you like and a couple of caterers and florists. There’s no need for full quotes yet, just ask for a guide to costs to give you a rough idea. It’s important that you bear these in mind so you don’t overspend on a venue and have nothing left for the rest. ❤ Step three – book your venue. See a few options or visit venue open days, so you can compare before committing to one. Be aware that many do get booked up well in advance. Once it’s booked you can send savethe-dates. ❤ Step four – book additional suppliers. Start with catering and beverages, as this is likely to represent a high proportion of your budget. Once the more costly items are booked, you can then look at confirming all other elements, such as the photographer, floristry and entertainment. This can all be a dauting process, so if you want help and advice why not enlist the services of a professional wedding planner?

Q&A

Look your big-day best with help from the professionals

LIGHT AND SHADE

I’ve heard about contouring, but never fully understood how to do it. Can you help? Ruth says: This technique has actually been around for centuries, and was used by Elizabethan stage actors to change their face shape using the art of illusion make-up. The idea behind it is to create an oval face shape, which is generally regarded as the most flattering. You’ll need a cream, liquid or powder that’s two shades darker than your foundation. Bear in mind that contour should be cool toned, unlike bronzer, which is warm. Charlotte Tilbury’s Hollywood Contour Wand is an excellent cream formula that’s very easy to blend. Any aspect of the face you wish to disguise can be contoured. For example, if you have a high forehead, try contouring across the top, along the hairline, to give the illusion that it’s shorter. The same principles can be applied to the jawline: if you have a sharp jaw that you want to soften, apply shadow along the bottom. Likewise, if you have a square jaw, contour the sides to lend it more definition. A great place for everyone to contour is under the cheekbones as this gives the impression of a slimmer face. Apply your chosen product from just below the top of the ear, going under the cheekbone but not further, then to the outer edge of your eyebrow. Then, using a make-up brush, blend out until there are no harsh lines visible. When blending under the cheekbone, take this in an upward direction. Finally, if you make a mistake, don’t worry. Take your foundation brush and use the excess product left on it to correct any boo-boos.

BREAK FREE

I’m looking for an elegant dress that’s easy to dance the night away in. What would you suggest? Hayley says: This season has some amazing new gowns that are not only elegant but comfortable to wear, and most importantly, allow freedom of movement. If it’s a fitted gown you’re looking for, then consider crepe satin as a fabric choice. It’s comfortable, has great elasticity and looks amazing. There are also some fabulous floaty boho styles available, which are light and super-easy to move in. Finally, if you want the wowfactor think about a dress with a detachable train. Beautifully extravagant for the ceremony, then a fab elegant style for the evening. With new and exciting designs hitting the catwalks on a regular basis, the options are practically endless.

Finishing Touch Flawless Dermaplane Glo, £19.99 Available at Argos, ASDA, Boots, Tesco and Wilko Dermaplaning as a salon treatment has been around for a while, and quite frankly the very thought of it has always terrified me. So, I wasn’t too sure what to expect of this tool. I did my research on the benefits, genned up on this superuseful tutorial and I was ready to go. Wow, I don’t know what I was so worried about. It was easy to do and took no more than five to 10 minutes. Probably 10 for me as I got a bit addicted and couldn’t stop – I don’t recommend that though. It’s an incredibly satisfying process seeing all of that peach fuzz and dead skin disappear. I couldn’t believe how smooth my skin felt afterwards. Leave your skin to rest for around eight hours afterwards before you apply any skin products or makeup as it’s quite an intense exfoliation process, then repeat every two to four weeks. I can’t wait to see how regular use improves my skin further. I’m definitely sold on dermaplaning!

TRIED AND TESTED

I was surprised to find a balm texture when I first removed the lid, so was interested to see how this would go. Using the supplied spatula to remove the required amount of mask from the tub, I opted for generous dollop and began to massage it into my face as instructed. Its thick formula felt incredibly luxurious and I could already tell it was going to provide a pampering experience. I was particularly delighted by the advice to leave for a minimum of 30 minutes, which gave me an excuse to relax for a decent amount of time – none of this 10 minutes rubbish! When it was time to remove with warm water, I was delighted to find my skin looking renewed, beautifully supple and glowing.

PUT A SPRING IN YOUR STEP CWM’s beauty editor puts this season’s best buys to the test creating a head-to-toe makeover session you’ll love

This multi-tasking palette offers four shades of highlight suitable whatever the look you’re going for. I particularly loved the darker rose Space Party, which I used on my cheeks over my blusher for a radiant glow and Super Cosmic, which I added to the arch of my eyebrows and very top of my cheekbones. It really brought a multi-dimensional look to my make-up that can be tailored for day or night. Sculpted by Aimee Connolly Lip Duo, £18 www.sculptedbyaimee.com I’m a huge advocate for lip liners and their myriad benefits, but I do struggle to know which shade goes with which lipstick, find the two become separated and will admit to resenting buying both in the first place. So, these Lip Duos are a blessing! Not only are they perfectly colour matched offering you two products for the average price of one, but if your make-up bag is already packed, like mine, they offer a smart solution. I tried Mauve Match, which is a versatile neutral shade, ideal for everyday wear.

No Secrets One Body Jelly, £49 www.nosecretsbeauty.com This jellied body oil smells absolutely incredible with No Secrets’ signature blend of essential oils – bergamot, juniper, petitgrain, eucalyptus and lavender. Less messy than a traditional body oil, you just need to massage a little in at a time for smooth and beautifully soft skin. Plus, the amazing fragrance lasts. Perfect for a pamper.

Margaret Dabbs Cracked Heel Treatment, £18 www.margaretdabbs.co.uk Let me start by confessing that my heels are horrendous, always cracked and dry and nothing I try makes a difference. Until now that is. This product was well and truly put through its paces by my horrible hooves and the results were instant. After just one application the sandpaper effect was gone and with continued use it really is a miracle worker. It’s my new beauty essential, and I can’t wait to get the flip flops on! 107

amed for her flawless skin, popular TV personality Jess Wright is a busy, gogetting woman. Whether she’s on a shoot, busy filming, hosting her podcast – Girls #NoFilter, planning next year’s wedding to William Lee-Kemp, or hard at work in her role as Crystal Clear’s first celebrity ambassador, her perfect skin is the envy of all. Keen to know her secret, CWM beauty editor Kelly Andrews sat down for a chat with the reality star to get the lowdown, just for you! Jess, thanks for making time in your hectic schedule to talk to us and huge congratulations on your forthcoming wedding. How do you imagine your big day? Thank you! I imagine it to be beautiful, full of love and hopefully classy. As long as I’m surrounded by my family and loved ones, that’s the most important thing. How did William propose? He did it on the balcony of our beautiful hotel room in the mountains in Courchevel. It was both spectacular and amazing. What’s your vision for your bridal beauty look? Good skin is the perfect base so I’ll be prepping with some fab Crystal Clear COMCIT facials in the run up to the big day for sure. Then I’ll want my make-up to be slightly natural, with that dewy glow and some wispy lashes.

Absolutely

FLAWLESS

Our beauty editor caught up with Jess Wright to discuss wedding plans and just how she achieves that perfect complexion

108

Do you have a picture of your dream dress in mind? I’ve tried on so many dresses, but I definitely have a vision. I think I’ve chosen the one. Completely understand you playing the cards close to your chest there! We look forward to the surprise. As the voice of experience, can you share with us your top wedding planning tips? I’d say, make sure you have a good wedding planner. Also, do the guest list, but don’t send the invitations out until later, as it’ll definitely alter as time goes on! So many couples have been forced to re-plan their weddings as a result of the pandemic. Have you encountered any such difficulties and do you have any advice for other couples facing the same challenges? We’ve considered moving the wedding, but

BEAUTY INTERVIEW

at the minute it’s a day-by-day update, so we’re going to make the final decision in the spring. If you’re not time restricted, I’d say move yours to 2022 if possible, so you can really enjoy the process rather than struggling through the pandemic. Leading a jam-packed celebrity lifestyle while planning a wedding must make you an extremely busy lady! How do you juggle it all while still looking fabulous and flawless? I love keeping busy, so I was really excited about planning a wedding on top of my already hectic lifestyle, but unfortunately

that hasn’t happened as the pandemic and various lockdowns have slowed me down. It has meant though that I’ve had plenty of time on my hands to plan the wedding! What are your make-up bag must haves? I love Chanel foundation for a quick matte bronze. Also, a good eyebrow pencil and a nourishing lip balm. I always keep the Crystal Clear Beach Glow Tanning Drops in my kit too. They’re amazing for adding a subtle glow to your skin and you can dial it up depending on the depth of colour you’re looking for. Tell us why you love Crystal Clear. I’m so excited to be chosen as the first ever ambassador for Crystal Clear Skincare. Their products are my holy grail and having tried so many different brands over the years, I just love the results you get with Crystal Clear, so it’s amazing to be working with the brand. The range is extensive with something to suit all skin types and concerns. The Ionic Sonic2 Microdermabrasion Kit is my ultimate secret to Insta-ready, super-cleansed skin. I’m also a big fan of the salon treatments, especially the COMCIT facial. It really is the most fantastic treatment for softer, firmer and hydrated skin.

Which is your favourite product from the range? I’d have to say The Lifting Wand, one of the brand’s beauty tools. It comes with its pharma-grade product, which is packed with hyaluronic acid. You use it for 60 seconds every day and it gives you deep hydration, depuffs eyes, plumps skin and lifts it. It’s really easy to use and fits into your daily routine. For a quick skin fix, I’d also highly recommend the 10 Minute Glow Mask, which literally does what it says on the tin and gives you glowing skin in just 10 minutes. It’s incredibly satisfying to peel off as well! What’s your number one beauty tip for brides? Focus on your skin. Glowing skin is the best thing on your wedding day in terms of beauty, so do whatever you need to make it feel its best. Finally, what’s next for you? Hopefully my wedding! Also, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, the musical I’m in. This is all dependant on the pandemic though. Sending my love to everyone at this time. erkshire-based make-up artist Joyce Connor has an impressively varied portfolio. Over the years, she’s worked in every arena from fashion, commercial and corporate, to teaching and blogging, with bridal make-up, her great passion, always at the core. She delights in sharing her wealth of make-up, skincare and beauty knowledge via lessons, workshops, and one-to-one tutorials. As well as being a regular magazine and blog contributor, she can also regularly be heard on BBC radio. Our beauty editor, Kelly Andrews, caught up with Joyce for her expert take on looking your big-day best. What set you out on your journey to becoming a make-up artist? I was living in New York in the late 90s, and used to go to various beauty counters to get my make-up done – I just loved the feeling, and looking in the mirror afterwards was always exciting! So, I wanted to be able to give that joy to others. You’ve worked across many realms during your career. Which was the most rewarding? Always bridal for me – I love being part of the wedding-planning adventure, and get swept away in the brides’ excitement. I’m there for my brides all morning, to help them through the emotional stages before I see them off down the aisle to get hitched. I find it incredibly heart-warming. Plus, it’s great to get positive feedback and see the photos from the day.

THE LOOK OF 110

ol ve

We talk bigday beauty with make-up artist Joyce Connor

What’s your driving ethos when it comes to bridal make-up? I always make sure I have the best quality products for my brides, to ensure their make-up lasts all day, and listening to their wants and needs is a key part of the process. On the day, I try to create a relaxing atmosphere for the whole bridal party, as it’s important for everyone to feel special while they’re being pampered. Hygiene is crucial, now more than ever, so I have individual sets of brushes for each person. What’s your all-time top bridal look? I definitely get asked for the flawless look most often. For this I need to go as natural as possible on the skin, then enhance the eyes or lips. What advice would you give to a bride who isn’t used to wearing make-up day to day? Opt for neutral tones with just a hint of colour on the eyes or lips. Choosing a tinted moisturiser, instead of foundation,

BEAUTY INTERVIEW will still give a flawless base. Having a trial session with your chosen make-up artist is the very best way to find the look you’re comfortable and happy with.

We rounded up the bridal beauty questions we get asked most often, and put them to Joyce for her take on achieving the ultimate confidence as you walk down the aisle:

The beauty industry is seeing a growing importance placed on vegan, crueltyfree and eco-friendly products. What’s your stance on this? I’ve been using cruelty-free make-up for over a decade and my kit has become 60 per cent vegan and eco-friendly. I’m still working to achieve 100 per cent, and fortunately, more and more cosmetic brands are bringing these innovations to the market.

I have exceptionally sensitive skin, and I’m worried about make-up causing flare-ups on the big day. What can you suggest? Have a trial and tell your make-up artist the products and brands you normally use. If you know which ingredients you have a sensitivity to, let them know that too. Using the right skincare for your skin can really help to reduce sensitivity. What do I do if I have a breakout the day before my wedding? Occasionally, this can happen due to hormones or stress, and the best advice I can give is to leave well alone. Try not to touch the breakout too much, and avoid products that may irritate the surrounding skin. Cleanse twice daily, and use a lightweight moisturiser.

What three products couldn’t you be without in your own make-up bag? Mascara to enhance my lashes, concealer to hide my blemishes and lipstick or gloss to give me a pop of colour.

I have oily skin and make-up doesn’t tend to stay in place. How can I combat this for my wedding day? A great skincare routine will resolve most skin concerns. A good tip to delay make-up slipping is to wait until your moisturiser has fully absorbed into the skin before you apply foundation. Don’t worry too much though, as your professional make-up artist will use primer and layering techniques to ensure your foundation stays put. I’m getting married in the height of summer, and I’m worried about the effect of the heat on my make-up. What can you recommend? Using waterproof or long-wear make-up will be a great help, as will applying thinner layers of base. I always give my brides blotting papers for the summer season, which reduce shine and the effect of heat on their make-up, ensuring it lasts all day.

What are your top make-up trend tips? Glowing skin is a huge trend, but be careful to avoid applying too much gold or silver highlighter to the wrong areas of your face. Apply only to cheekbones, brow bones and the collarbone, drawing the eye to all the right places. Lash enhancements are amazing, but be sure to try them out a couple of times before your wedding day, as they may take some getting used to. Contouring is still one of the most askedabout make-up techniques. Applied in the correct way it can look fantastic.

How can I wear a glamorous look while still looking like me? Wearing make-up enhances your own natural beauty, enabling you to look like the best version of yourself. Add a touch of glam with smoky eyes in brown, or a dramatic lip colour, while keeping the rest of the face flawless. I always encourage my brides not to deviate too far from their everyday look. I really want to look fresh-faced and bright-eyed on my big day, but I struggle to conceal dark circles. Can you help? Dark circles are either genetic, or they form due to lack of sleep. Try a colour corrector to cover them up and keep them well hidden all day. Follow my three c’s: correct, colour, conceal. First, you need to apply a cream colour corrector, follow that with a layer of foundation, and then a liquid concealer. Finally, set with a powder. Retreat to ty the ci

Hannah Faulder visits The Marylebone, and finds out that it offers the best of both worlds for a minimoon in the capital

A

s the country prepared for Lockdown Part II, my husband and I managed to sneak in a last-minute escape to the city to enjoy a much-needed retreat at The Marylebone. Nestled in the hotel’s supertrendy namesake neighbourhood, between the Georgian Welbeck Street and the partpedestrianised Marylebone Lane, you’re just a short walk from London’s most famous Monopoly locations, from Bond Street to Mayfair. Stepping out for a stroll from the hotel, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re in a bustling Cotswolds village – that is until you happen upon Oxford Street. But this is what makes it such a wonderful destination for a minimoon or post-wedding break: it’s close to the action, but it provides a tranquil retreat from it too.

STAY Cross the threshold, and you’ll find a neutral palette offsets the pops of colour and modern paintings on the walls perfectly. Look carefully, and you’ll notice a subtle design scheme reflecting the four seasons as you walk through the hotel. Following an extensive refurbishment, the striking decor extends throughout, and no luxurious touch has been spared. Classic timber flooring, marble-topped counters and wood panelling blend seamlessly with curated artwork and designer furniture. There’s a

whole host of event spaces too for weddings and celebrations with real character; I particularly loved the verdant Palm Room and the sociable al fresco terraces. Our corner suite was chic and fresh, its spacious circular layout houses a small kitchen area, complete with Nespresso machine, a sumptuous living area, dining table and huge marshmallowy bed. “We could live here,” my husband and I kept saying to each other. We sat, champagne in hand, and gazed out of the window over the pretty streets of Marylebone with the city lights glittering in the distance; it had a distinct Mary Poppins vibe. The striking marble bathroom boasted a huge bath, walk-in shower and trendy Malin+Goetz toiletries. The welcome pack with COVIDsafe goodies like hand sanitiser was gratefully received, and the hotel clearly states all the measures it has taken to look after guests’ wellbeing. Looking to really treat yourself and your loved one? The super-stylish Marylebone Suite has a showstopping cedar-clad terrace, with a retractable roof, awesome vistas and an outdoor TV and fireplace – it’s certainly memorable! While you’re here, why not treat yourself to some R&R in the Third Space Health Club, with its gym and 18m pool.

EAT We dragged ourselves away from the champagne and fluffy robes long enough to enjoy the hotel’s restaurant, 108 Brasserie. This is not a typical hotel restaurant, more a fabulous eatery for locals and tourists alike

that just happens to be attached. Set on the cobbles of Marylebone Lane, the outdoor seating with patio heaters makes it look so inviting. Inside, you’ll find traditional style with a modern edge, from rich upholstery and parquet flooring to antique mirrors and decadent florals. The meals on the globally inspired menu feature fresh ingredients with a focus on seasonality. Yummy burrata, salads and decadent desserts were the order of the day, making the restaurant a mustvisit for guests.

EXPLORE The next morning, we treated ourselves to a full English breakfast (one vegetarian) in bed, with hearty portions served under silver cloches, before heading out on foot to explore the neighbourhood. This soon turned into a wonderful day strolling through the nearby Royal Parks, spotting parrots and pelicans before ducking into a café for a takeaway coffee as we meandered up The Mall to take in Buckingham Palace. Next up was a stroll through Hyde Park and into the shopping mecca that is Oxford Street before heading back for a quiet drink at the hotel’s bar – perfection! If you don’t get the best weather, though, the capital’s attractions are within easy reach on public transport – or you could just hunker down in your room and luxuriate in your newly wedded bliss.
