DRAPERS’ HALL At Drapers’ Hall you are marrying into 500 years of history. Thomas Cromwell chose to build his mansion in this very spot. Centuries and several reincarnations later, our Livery Hall is one of the grandest buildings in London, a palace in the heart of the City, surrounded by churches, a place where fellowship, generosity, heritage, and hospitality all come together. And for a day it will be yours. Sweep through the oak-panelled entrance hall and up the grand staircase to rooms decked with flowers where champagne flows, tables lit by silver candelabra glitter under painted ceilings and balconies give onto secret gardens. Our experienced in-house team and gold medal-winning chef will be at your service. Every wedding is unique and Drapers’ Hall offers complete flexibility and exclusively for wedding couples, with bespoke catering options and inclusive wedding packages that can be tailored to your taste. Couples that choose Drapers’ Hall for their wedding reception will benefit from an incredibly simple planning process, with all of the essentials included, plus elegant candelabra table centres, dance floor and a Steinway classic grand piano. Our Events team will help you at every stage to plan your day and ensure that every detail is perfect for you. Whether Drapers’ Hall is chosen to host a small intimate wedding breakfast or the grandest of celebrations, the venue is available for your exclusive use, including our two outdoor spaces, meaning your special day does not have to be shared with anyone else but your guests.

Those looking for a special pre- or post-wedding date night should check out the newly launched menu at Adam Handling’s Michelin-starred flagship restaurant, Frog by Adam Handling, situated in Covent Garden. Fresh off the back of winning a Michelin star, chef Adam Handling continues to raise the bar as he announced a brand-new menu concept that launched in April. The menu, that previously consisted of two separate five- and seven-course tasting menus, has been transformed and replaced with one spectacular tencourse tasting menu. Adam has created the new menu to take his sustainability agenda to the next level, providing the team with even more opportunity to use their creative freedom and use the very best seasonal produce from some of the UK’s top suppliers, in line with the restaurant’s philosophy, ‘British food, inspired by London’. Almost every dish on the menu is new – even Adam’s signature ‘Bread, chicken butter’ and ‘All about the sturgeon’ have been elevated, all whilst retaining his signature flair and touch of theatre. FLOWERS FOR KEEPS Shida Preserved Flowers has recently launched a seasonal collection to last all year. The two-piece collection features a gorgeous handtied bouquet and a Japanese-inspired Midori Ikebana flower arranging kit. The Nova handtied bouquet features deep blue hydrangeas accessorised with lush, preserved greenery. It also includes natural gypsophila, stuartina, fern, blue botao, lepidium, and parvafolia in ultramarine blue and forest greens, chosen for their mood-boosting qualities. The second piece is the Midori Ikebana Kit. This curated collection of stems, foliage and floral decorations features sumptuous greenery and pops of blue, providing a fresh take on Ikebana, the ancient art of Japanese flower arranging. The preserved arrangements will last for months after your big day and are soft and supple to the touch, giving the same enchanting appearance as fresh cut flowers and floral bouquets. Shida’s expert team of florists hand-arrange each of its blooms and lovingly place them in sustainable packaging before they are delivered directly to your door. A SLICE OF THE HIGH LIFE The UK’s oldest British caterer is celebrating its 175th anniversary with the recreation of a royal wedding cake created by its founder, John Searcy, 126 years ago. The caterer has taken a trip back through its archives to the1896 royal wedding of Princess Maud, then the future Queen of Norway, to Prince Carl of Denmark. Considered the society wedding of the year, royal attendees included Queen Victoria, grandmother of the bride, the Prince and Princess of Wales, and the Crown Prince and Princess of Denmark. A confectioner by trade and a Royal Warrant holder, John Searcy came out of retirement to bake the breathtaking multi-tiered big-day bake. Adorned with sweet treats, the cake included fine sugar work flowers, roses and angels, along with the Royal Arms of England and Denmark. In tribute to its founder, Searcys has recreated the same cake in partnership with baker Elizabeth Solaru of Elisabeth’s Cake Emporium. Working alongside Searcys own pastry chef, Yvonne Graham, the confectioners spent three weeks tirelessly completing the bake to reflect the original design. Five-tiers of Dundee fruit cake are covered with delicate marzipan and white and gold lattice work icing before being topped with carefully crafted sugar work of flowers, fruits and cherubs. The cake will travel across Searcys restaurants throughout the summer, so for your chance to sample a slice head to 116 Pall Mall, Searcys at the Gherkin or St Pancras Brasserie from early July to early August. The Princess Maud wedding cake can also be made to order for any wedding celebrations booked at Searcys iconic venues. To find out more check out www.searcys.co.uk 10

This sequence of opulent interconnecting rooms comprises the Conservatory, Drawing Room, Long Gallery and Dining Room, all of which can host up to 90 for your ceremony and 190 guests for your reception. Nestled at the foot of the south lawns, the Orangery is an exemplar of stunning glass architecture that previously housed the family’s exotic fruits and plants. REAL WEDDINGS
TOGETHER
Emily and Jonny had the day they’d always dreamed of in Wimbledon Images courtesy of Brett Harkness Photography

mily and Jonny met on Tinder around eight years ago. “We were both in the same year at university in Durham, so we had a lot of mutual friends, but we never actually met,” says Emily. At the time Emily was doing her master’s degree at Imperial College London and Jonny just so happened to be working in the city. “We arranged to meet up, but never did I think on our first date that we’d be together forever,” she adds. Their relationship started as a summer fling. “He invited himself to my family holiday that summer in Spain, and the rest is history – here we are now!” she adds. Jonny proposed at The Pig near Bath, on a bench in the gardens. “His grandparents used to own the property, so it’s a special place for the family,” Emily says. “It was a total surprise, although he was sweating a lot that day!”. After waiting an extra year due to Covid, their special day finally arrived – and it was well worth the wait. Here, Emily tells us more about it… 31
Jonny and his groomsmen wore morning suits and waistcoats from Favourbrook. Apart from being the best looking of course, he stood out by wear ing a baby pink waistcoat and tie and houndstooth trous ers.
I wore a Galia Lahav dress from Browns Brides. I’ve had my eye on that designer for years, as I love the detail in her gowns. I’ve been looking at her dresses ever since Beyonce got married in one.

We hosted our day in a sail tent marquee at my parent’s house in Wimbledon. The pers onal touch and excitement of doing it at home trumped the grandness of a big venue for us.

Music’s so important to us so we had lots of entertainment! In the church we had a string quartet, trumpet and a classical singer for my entrance and a choir. From the reception onwards we were looked after by Function Fever. We had a jazz trio in reception, a pianist over dinner, and a live band.
We couldn’t have done the day without my mother and sister. My mother spent so much time and threw everything into our wedding and my sister held me together for the last few weeks.

LOVE AT
For Neda and Pedram, fairytales really do come true Images courtesy of Jeff Oliver Photography

REAL WEDDINGS
B
oth leading busy lives, Neda and Pedram didn’t have much spare time to meet anyone – until they were introduced via the dating app Hinge. “Within a matter of days of being on the app, we matched, and the rest was history,” says Neda. “What attracted me to Pedram was his charm, intellect, and great looks. He was a breath of fresh air. Not only did he tick every box, he brought the best out of me; a side of myself I never knew existed,” she says. “I was so nervous on our first date. From that moment, when he looked at me from across the road and then held my hand it was like magic, and I knew this was it,” Neda remembers. “It might sound crazy, but it’s true that sometimes, it’s like a spark that lights up your heart and there’s an instant connection.”
BEST NIGHT OF OUR LIVES Pedram proposed to Neda on the Golden Jubilee bridge. “He told me that we were invited to a work dinner and that we had to cross over the bridge as it was close to it,” recalls Neda. Pedram chose this location because Neda’s late father was the chief engineer and had led the bridge project to completion, so it was special to her. Family from around the world had travelled to London and while Pedram was popping the question, they were waiting in a Persian restaurant in Notting Hill, ready to surprise Neda. “Once I’d said yes, I realised there was no work event. Instead, we got into a taxi and drove to the restaurant. It was one of the best nights of our lives.”
STYLISH SURROUNDINGS Neda and Pedram always wanted to get married somewhere with class, grandeur, style, and elegance and with a royal feel to it. “The Kimpton Fitzroy had it all. The beautiful ballroom has a feel of history. The hotel’s luxurious with every room having its own character, and the Palm Court is a mixture of an exquisite oasis and bright grandeur,” says Neda. “The white-glove service just amplified our feeling that this was the perfect place for our special day,” she adds. The duo had guests flying in from all over the world, so being so close to St Pancras International and connections from Heathrow was ideal.
LOOKING THE PART “When I started looking for my dress, I knew I wanted to try on ballgown styles,” says Neda. “I found many that were beautiful, but Demetrios designs stood out to me as being stunning. Once I’d tried it on, I knew this was the one.” The dress was adorned with detail and sequins, so Neda opted for simple accessories. “I wore a tiara from Ivory and Co and paired it with simple earrings and necklace from David Deyong, to suit the sweetheart neckline of the dress,” she says. The bridesmaids wore a silk emerald green maxi dress. “I searched long and hard for bridesmaid dresses and it was hard to get the fit right, but I came across Trend Story on Instagram and the experience was the best,” says Neda. “The beauty is that you can choose any style dress in their collection and choose the material and colour to match your theme.” Pedram wanted the groomsmen and himself to be matching and they all looked the part in classic black tuxedos.
SOMETHING OUT OF A FAIRYTALE The venue styling was breathtaking! For their centrepieces white blossom trees brimming with white roses lined the tables with hanging tealight candles. “The Blossom Company elevated the space to new heights. It was truly something out of a fairytale and the pictures speak for themselves,” says Neda. Flowers used throughout were a mix of white and blush pink with foliage in abundance and the stunning floral arch framed the alter perfectly. Stylish white acrylic with gold lettering was used for the table plan and table names and gold wooden laser cut names were used for the place settings. The dancefloor design incorporating the couple’s initials complemented the look. When it came to the cake, the six-tier fondant showstopper with white sugared flowers and a gold tier was truly fit for royalty.

CHERISHED MEMORIES “For our favours we created boxes for our guests that included gold trinket pomegranates, sweets and a gold chain with hanging evil eye,” says Neda. Throughout the day they entertained friends and family with music-a-plenty. A string quartet played traditional music during the ceremony and drinks reception and a DJ played a mix of English music with a hint of Persian heritage so they could experience both during the evening party. “We also hired a photobooth, which went down a treat! It kept the guests entertained and we ended up with great photos and a signed album in the end, which we’ll cherish forever” she says.
A DAY TO REMEMBER “The ceremony was without a doubt the most amazing moment of the day. This is what it was all about – coming together as one. Our Persian ceremony was also beautiful, and it involved multiple family members. It felt so wholesome,” says Neda. “The speeches were also special. Each person did a tremendous job with every message coming straight from the heart.” For Neda and Pedram, their day was perfect and full of emotion. “Apart from the usual nerves, this was the best day of our lives. It was surreal that we were getting married and that all our loved ones were there from all ends of the world,” she says. “It was hard to keep the emotions away. From the moment you walk down the aisle, the emotions kick in and you feel this is it. We enjoyed every single second; it was the happiest day of our lives.” 39

any of us were grateful for the short gap between Covid lockdowns, when we could finally leave the house and socialise but Clare and Jess were even more so as this was their chance to meet. They got talking through dating app Hinge and arranged their first date at a gin bar in Walthamstow where Jess lives. Here they both tell us more… “We met at 8pm, but because of Covid the bar shut at 9pm. In the first hour we’d made an immediate connection and neither of us wanted it to end, so we walked around under Clare’s tiny umbrella in the summer rain drinking gin out of takeaway coffee cups!” says Jess. “Clare’s ability to see through all the noise in life to the important things attracted me to her. She’s beautiful and she took my breath away.” Clare adds, “I just loved Jess’s company straight away, she’s so interesting and smart, but also soulful and thoughtful. I loved
that combination. I remember thinking she was really hot when I walked into the bar too!” The duo knew they wanted to get married pretty fast and ended up living together because of the pandemic after two months of dating. “Clare booked a mini break at Mallinson’s Treehouse in Dorset. We went the day before Clare’s birthday which really threw me off thinking it could be a proposal,” says Jess. “On arrival we went to use our treetop sauna and hot tub and whilst Jess was in the hot tub, I went inside and got three cards of poetry that I’d had hand-printed from a print press in LA,” Clare says. “I made a treasure hunt around the treehouse and told Jess to find each poem, searching in a specific order as the last card had ‘Will you marry me?’ on it,” she says. When Jess found the card, Clare got down on one knee and proposed. “Jess was very emotional and said yes! We then had more champagne in the hot tub and gazed up at the trees above us,” says Clare. 43

From Miss to Mrs County Wedding Magazines’ senior editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey t’s finally here, my last bride’s diary entry before I become a married woman! When we first got engaged nearly 18 months ago, the wedding seemed so far away that it almost didn’t feel real, and yet here we are about to walk down the aisle. The last few weeks of planning have been a bit manic with all of our suppliers getting in touch asking for lastminute details, and although it can feel a little overwhelming, it’s also really exciting! This issue is all about my dress alterations, hair and make-up trial and keeping positive as the big day approaches...
FITS LIKE A GLOVE I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t incredibly nervous for my first dress fitting. I purchased my gown over a year ago, and I’ve gone through phases during that time where I’ve loved it and also doubted it. It was a size too big when I bought it, so looking back at the pictures it was hard to imagine what it would look like fitting properly. I think my main worry was ‘what if it doesn’t look like I imagined or even worse, what if the seamstress makes it too small or too short!?’ As someone who likes to micromanage everything, this situation was certainly out of my comfort zone. I took two of my bridesmaids with me for my first appointment for moral support, and the seamstress, Danielle, was wonderful. She made us feel really at ease and like nothing was too much trouble. She knew right away how to alter my dress and was able to do it within a quick timeframe. I left the appointment feeling much calmer but also a little apprehensive about how the dress would eventually turn out. Fast forward a month, it was time for my second fitting and for the bridesmaids’ dresses to be altered. After a morning of panicking and worrying, I can’t put into words how relieved I felt when I tried on my dress and it fit like a glove. It still needed a few tweaks here and there, but overall I felt much happier as I was no longer drowning in a sea of fabric and worrying that my boobs might fall out at a moment’s notice! Danielle was also very reassuring to the bridesmaids who were worried about parts of their dresses and, within a week, we had all three back looking perfect. Having had several meltdowns over this, my advice to any nearlyweds-to-be is to try not to panic and trust your suppliers. As long as they have good reviews and are confident in their capabilities, then leave it to them – they’re the experts after all! 48
FACING FACTS As someone who has only worn make-up once for prom night many years ago, I was unsure of what I wanted when it came to my bridal make-up. Make-up is not my forte and, much to my friends’ amusement, I can’t tell you the difference between highlighter, foundation and concealer – and that’s just for starters! For this reason, I chose a hair stylist and make-up artist with great reviews, who are familiar with my venue and whole-heartedly put my trust in them. During my trial, she sat me down and asked what I wanted, and I was honest and said ‘no idea’. She laughed and reassured me that I’m not the only woman in the world who doesn’t wear make-up (even though it feels like it sometimes). She went for a very natural look and talked me through the process. Even though my make-up looked great and was very subtle, it was still a shock to see myself with it on. It took me the whole day to get used to it, but I was really pleased with the result, and felt like a princess. When it comes to hair (you’ll be pleased to hear I’m not as clueless), I had a rough idea of what style I wanted but was torn between a half up and half down look or an up do. My hair stylist was wonderful! She created both looks for me, took loads of pictures and made sure I was happy with both styles. After a lot of deliberation I’ve decided on an up do, as my dress has dramatic front and back detailing that I didn’t want anything to detract from. I left my hair and make-up in place, like they suggested, for the whole day and it still looked wonderful by 11pm. I was really pleased with the whole experience and being dressed up made me feel so excited to finally marry my best friend. Thank you all for sticking with me throughout my wedding journey. I hope you enjoy planning your own day and everything turns out perfectly!

Melissa’s hubby-to-be opens a window into the wedding planning journey from the groom’s perspective
H
ello readers, as I’m sure you’re all well aware, my beautiful Melissa has been detailing our journey from our couch-based lockdown proposal to the wedding altar, and what a journey it has been! Thankfully Melissa is the most organised person on the planet, so my involvement in this process has been minimal at best, however that being said, I’ve picked up one or two things along the way that Melissa has generously given me this space to share...
www.chrisblackledgepho
tography.co.uk
GUEST LIST Being the social beast I am, I found putting together a finalised wedding guest list quite difficult. Much to Melissa’s dismay I wanted to invite everyone I’d ever met and their postman. However, (thankfully) the capacity of our venue and overall budget (I don’t think I appreciated how expensive day guests are) put the brakes on my invite rampage and forced me to reign in my expectations somewhat. I found that I felt quite guilty about not inviting everyone I’ve ever spoken to, but you definitely do need to draw the line somewhere. My advice to anyone planning a
wedding is don’t lose any sleep over not inviting someone, chances are they probably weren’t going to invite you to their wedding anyway!
CHOOSING YOUR GROOMSMEN Thankfully this was quite an easy one for me. My best man has been my closest ally and confident for 15 years now, so there was no hesitation in my mind when asking him. My biggest concern was that having four groomsmen might be too many, but I couldn’t imagine any of them not being next to me for support, so the thought of losing one of them from the party would have been like removing oxygen. Another thing I’m grateful for is that they all get along brilliantly. I’ve heard some real horror stories about infighting between people’s bridesmaids and groomsmen, so this is definitely something to consider when selecting your party. You might love them all, but do they like each other? You’d think that people would pull together for their friend’s biggest day, but you never know.
PLANNING YOUR STAG DO I’ll be honest, I never really saw the purpose of a stag do. Admittedly in my mind, I had this warped perception of the event being a trip to a dubious location to take part in nefarious activities. I’m not a particularly good drinker, and as I creep onto the darker side of my 30s, I’m even worse at handling a hangover, so the prospect of this seemed less than appealing. Sitting down to discuss with my (similarly worldweary) best man, we came to the reassuring
realisation that a stag do can be whatever you want it to be. In my instance, I like Centre Parcs, and the thought of a trip there (and many, many barbecues) seemed like a slice of heaven, so this was a bit of a no-brainer. Ultimately my advice to any groom-to-be is don’t be afraid to book something that will make you happy. If your groomsmen deserve their place in your party, they won’t challenge your choices.
THE SPEECH This is a big one, probably the biggest responsibility of the groom. The wedding day is such a big event in a person’s life, and the speeches really stick with attendees – good or bad! My first piece of advice would be not to leave it to the last minute. It’s certainly one of those things that can be put off, but I promise it won’t be worth the anxiety! There are thousands of great speech templates online that you can use as a starting point. Once I got started, I found writing about my loved ones and the significance of the day was easy, as it’s your opportunity to be honest, and just gush about everything. You proposed for a reason and this is your chance to share it with everyone, including your bride. Write from your heart, speak from the bottom of your lungs and try not to stare at your feet the whole time! Oh, and practicing the speech once or twice before the big day probably isn’t a bad idea! Thank you for reading and good luck!

LAURA SEE | LAURA SEE LONDON WWW.LAURASEELONDON.COM
Tell us about your company... Laura See London creates luxurious, high-quality footwear aimed at women who enjoy looking stylish, feeling incredibly comfortable and living life to the full. What’s your most popular product? We have two that have been equally popular this year, both from the SS collection, the Stellula 85 in lavender and Esmeralda 105 in blue. Why do you love what you do? Being creative makes me happy and Laura See London’s a dream come true as it combines my passion for art and shoes. I’ve always loved painting and working with colours to create vibrant patterns. These designs are printed onto the leather of every pair of shoes giving them an additional pop of colour and making them stand out from the crowd. I love knowing that women around the world are choosing to buy the shoes I’ve designed and made. It’s hugely satisfying. Why should couples choose local suppliers for their wedding? Buying locally helps to reduce our carbon footprint whilst doing our bit to keep indie businesses alive and thriving. Without the independent suppliers our high streets will start to die and our communities that are so familiar and special will be lost. What’s your signature style? The high-heeled sandal that features more of my artwork than some of the other styles. It’s designed to be the perfect occasion and party shoe that not only looks incredibly stylish but is extremely comfortable to wear – no need to bring flats to change into halfway through the night when you’re wearing a pair of Laura See London sandals! 51

Queensmith is an award-winning jeweller that specialises in capturing each couple’s love story with engagement and wedding rings, crafted in-house, just for them! Our team of leading industry experts bring couples’ visions to fruition, through expert-led consultations, considered design, and meticulous craftsmanship. What’s your most popular product? Simple and refined engagement rings. Classic solitaire and halo rings never go out of style. Traditionally, round diamonds have been the most popular choice for engagement rings - but now we’re seeing couples turn to elegant ovals and more edgy pears or emerald cuts. Subtle diamond additions are really taking off – hidden halos, diamond set bridges and claws and tiny extra diamonds that give simple designs an alternative spin. From our wedding ring collections, most men opt for plain designs and our diamond bands are popular with women. Why do you love what you do? Capturing a couple’s love story and doing it justice with such personal jewellery is a big responsibility, but a seriously enjoyable job. Most of our engagement ring clients stick with us to craft their wedding rings a year or two later. It’s a beautiful business to be in – getting to know our couples and celebrating life’s milestones with them. Each member of the Queensmith team’s passionate about their area of expertise. From the gemmologists that select each diamond and the

Why should couples choose local suppliers for their wedding? Being located in London’s Hatton Garden, we’re lucky to have really great diamond and metal suppliers on our doorstep. We don’t rely on international factories or mass production, and we can ensure our crafters are paid fully and fairly for the outstanding work they do. Above all, crafting jewellery in-house means we can control costs and ensure exceptional quality every time. It’s peace of mind that your ring has been locally made by accomplished industry experts, at a price that’s fair. What’s your signature style? Our style is rooted in refinement: beauty lies in simplicity. This gives our crafters nowhere to hide – the crafting standards have to be extremely high for a seamless finish that’ll last a lifetime.
LIV LINDLEY | LIV LINDLEY SILK STUDIO WWW.LIVLINDLEY.COM Tell us about your company... Liv Lindley is a London based lifestyle brand underpinned by the belief that we can all benefit from a little affordable luxury in our lives and silk accessories deliver just that. The inspiration for launching my business started as I struggled to find a timeless, quality dressing gown to wear on the morning of my own wedding. I knew I wanted it to be silk, so it’d feel luxurious to wear and breathable. I was fed up with the fast-fashion bridal dressing gowns that’d flooded the market, so I wanted to create one that wouldn’t cost the earth but would be a special keepsake that could be worn well beyond the wedding day. As well as accessories and gifts for the bridal party, my collection includes other items such as pillowcases, eye masks and scrunchies. What’s your most popular product? My gift sets are the most popular, including our sleep set with a silk pillowcase and matching silk eye mask, statement scrunchie gift box and Bridal Beauty Silk gift set including a silk pillowcase, ‘Bride’ eye mask and scrunchie in pearl white. My silk dressing gowns are also popular. I always wanted to create that moment of excitement and pure joy when a customer receives their order, so a lot of thought has gone into the development of our packaging and gorgeous gift boxes. We even offer complimentary gift wrapping on all orders over £40. Why do you love what you do? It’s so rewarding to receive positive feedback from customers who’ve loved my products and it’s amazing seeing pictures of brides wearing my silk dressing gowns on their wedding morning. 52
One of the core values of the business is to help people find time in their busy schedules for a little everyday self-care. Throughout the pandemic I saw many people struggle with sleep, stress and anxiety and the impact this was having on their mental wellbeing, so I wanted to find a solution to help. The many advantages of silk are still not widely realised, so my ‘Silkology’ concept helps explain all of the health and well-being benefits of switching to silk. Why should couples choose local suppliers for their wedding? Most of the suppliers for my wedding were local and I loved that everyone already knew each other, which created a lovely buzz and atmosphere, especially on the morning of the wedding when everyone was working together to get everything set up. I think it creates a real sense of comradery where all your suppliers genuinely want to support each other, and they passionately work together to create the day of your dreams! What’s your signature style? Elegant and timeless, with a modern romantic feel.

LOCAL PRODUCTS
Tell us about your company... I design and handcraft beautiful jewellery and wedding hair accessories, keeping collections limited to retain individuality. Part of my collection blends stunning vintage elements, ranging from rare, signed brooches to gorgeous original Art Deco pieces. As a result, each handmade design is a one-of-a-kind piece. I compliment my fabulous vintage finds with sparkling crystals, pearls and other luxurious gemstones. What’s your most popular product? My hair accessories and jewellery are bespoke pieces so it’s tricky to know! However, hair vines are very popular and my mixed pearl hair pins have been a real hit this season. Why do you love what you do? It’s the perfect outlet for my creativity when I’m not hairdressing. I love to make people feel happy and contributing to a special life event is such a rewarding feeling for me. Why should couples choose local suppliers for their wedding? When you tap into your local community, it’s a game changer for all involved as you’ll get that personal touch, local knowledge and contacts where they know other wedding suppliers in the area. Being a bridal hairstylist for so long I’ve always enjoyed a team coming together at a wedding, where everyone knows their job and works in harmony. It’s such a lovely vibe. What’s your signature style? I’m always driven by what my brides request. I do a lot of bespoke work to make their ideas come to life. However, I’d probably say classically elegant with a contemporary twist.
MERVE BAYINDER | MERVE BAYINDER MILLINARY HTTPS://MERVEBAYINDIR.COM Tell us about your company... We’re a mother-daughter team that put hats back on the fashion map in Turkey. It’s hard to become an international designer from Turkey, so in 2016, we moved to London and quickly got recognition for our work. All of our products are handmade in our studio and our suppliers are fairtrade. What’s your most popular product? One of our light pink saucer hats with small roses is the favourite of the season, but our signature is a single large flower that we renew and add up each year. Also from our bridal collection the three-bow hat seems to be a favourite. Why do you love what you do? It’s a family trade. We both learned tailoring from my grandmama so it’s in our heritage. I put so much into each design and every creation fills me with joy and pride. When we create a hat, what I love most is seeing the faces of clients when they finally wear the finished piece. It’s the pleasure of making someone’s dream happen. Why should couples choose local suppliers for their wedding? There’s a connection there. We remember all our clients by their hats. You’re not just another customer, you’ll be cared for and taken care of. We emotionally invest in the wedding just as much as our clients do. What’s your signature style? Elegance, simplicity and a touch of fun with comfort. Even when a hat is over the top, I believe it needs a bit of simplicity in order to stay
elegant. Every women has a playful side so I like to think and believe all my hats have small surprises when you look carefully. But most importantly comfort is the aim and always will be – so much so that you’ll forget you’re wearing a hat or headpiece after a while. 53

WEDDING CAKES
THE GREAT LONDON
T
BAKE OFF Local pros share their showstopper bakes
here’s so much to consider when it comes to choosing your big-day bake. Obviously choosing your flavour is the best bit (for those with a sweet tooth), but the style and design is what takes the time and quite rightly so! If you’re not sure where to start, here our local pros share their favourite designs…
EMMA DODI | EMMA DODI CAKES | HTTPS://EMMADODICAKES.COM LA VIE EN ROSE One of my favourite classically romantic wedding cakes. Timelessly elegant in blush pink adorned with the most graceful blooms, subtle texturing and 24-carot gold detailing, this is a dreamy cake fit for a princess. For those looking for that fairytale wedding this is where they need to be.
THE OSCAR CAKE This is a signature Emma Dodi Cakes wedding cake. Inspired by that Oscar de la Renta dress, it’s adorned with real edible pressed flowers and makes a statement. Edible flowers are really fashionable as is haute couture, so the combination is an absolute favourite with fashion loving brides-to-be! Loved because of its beauty and vibrancy but also because it’s completely edible. We expect to continue seeing it as a favourite going forward.
PÉTALES BLANCS CAKE An exquisite classic white on white, it couldn’t get more sophisticated than this. Hand-piped florals embellished with dried edible cream rose petals gives you timeless elegance and beauty. Entirely edible it’s a graceful, original and popular choice and I think it’ll continue to maintain a pride of place with many brides.
FIESTA CAKE This design is a real game changer. Many couples are now choosing designs that tell their story, with colour and vibrancy beginning to really take centre stage. We’re starting to embrace colour and character in a new and exciting way. More of a challenge but so rewarding, we love to encapsulate a little of our couples into their design so this a favourite for us.
PEONIES AND RUFFLES This is a delicate and elegant design with a touch of originality. Printed classical designs with extravagant wafer paper ruffles, really make for a standout cake. Definitely one we’ll see more of going forward.
GRACE CAKE Gold and white, refined, luxurious and stylish, this is a beautiful and classic design that’s stood the test of time. Classic white roses, symbols of purity, innocence, and eternity, are always very popular and the addition of gold leaf and foliage make it incredibly chic.

TRACEY RASHID | ESSENCE OF CAKE | WWW.ESSENCEOFCAKE.COM There are four main trends for 2022, and they are: bold colours, small cutting cakes, simple designs and separated tiers. Let’s delve into what they actually mean...
BOLD COLOURS Gone are the days when wedding cakes have to follow a strict, white design. Now couples want to make a statement by celebrating their marriage with a cake that says it all. These statement centrepieces don’t necessarily follow the colour scheme either, they stand proud on their own as a showstopper. To add to the boldness of these statement cakes, couples are ramping up the effect by adding more tiers than we’ve seen before. For 2022, couples want four to five tiers (even if some aren’t real cake) to put a stamp on things and I don’t blame them.
SIMPLE DESIGNS No longer does your bake have to be extravagant, it’s down to personal choice. Simple can scream elegance just as much as the elaborate and can match it with impact too. Adding an amazing topper or an arrangement of flowers can really transform these simple cakes into something very special. 56
SMALL CUTTING CAKES For more intimate nuptials, small cutting cakes are perfect. A single, compact and beautiful tier that’s just enough for the small number of guests and still offering great photo opportunities. It also speaks to those who are conscious about waste and want to make sure everything gets eaten. I’ve had the pleasure of making a few of these cakes and it’s a joy to be able to put my focus on one tier. No levelling issues, worries about tiers sliding around or transport woes, just precision and attention.
SEPARATED TIERS Deconstructing desserts has been all the rage in the patisserie world for some time, so there’s no surprise that the same concept’s being adopted in the wedding cake world. Couples are moving away from the stacked tiers and instead, each tier is getting its own time to shine by being placed on separated platforms on the same cake stand. This offers more diversity in the design, as they can be similar but don’t have to be the same due to being spaced out.
WEDDING CAKES DAVINA PLUMMBER | SINCERELY DIVINE | HTTPS://SINCERELYDIVINE.COM Sincerely Divine will work with you to create the very best in bespoke cake design and delicious flavours. Working directly with our couples, we love to produce beautiful contemporary bakes. Whether it be the ever-popular signature vanilla bean flavour, or something a bit more creative like banana cake with Nutella buttercream, the choice is yours. We love adding that wow factor to your special day.
GWYNETH JOHNSON | SWEET SENSATIONS | HTTP://SWEET-SENSE.CO.UK This is my favourite and is often commented on when I do wedding fairs. I just love fresh flowers as there’s something very simple yet delicate and romantic about them against the ruffled layers.
Pink seems to be a favoured shade Our Bouqcakes (a bouquet of I’m also finding a trend more towards naked cakes and generally in my cakes and cupcakes and is my cupcakes, designed to look like a floral arrangement) make great most requested colour scheme. an unfussy look. gifts for your bridal party, and our cupcakes look fabulous displayed around your wedding cake or you could add them to your place settings as favours.

The Bridgerton effect
Editorial assistant Gracie Leader looks at how Netflix’s biggest show has influenced weddings
E
https://dominikamiechowska.co.uk
veryone’s favourite period drama re-entered our lives with a bang at the end of March when season two of Bridgerton became Netflix’s most viewed English-language TV series, watched for 251.7 million hours in its debut week alone. And the show is certainly not going anywhere, having been renewed for both seasons three and four back in April of last year, following the huge success of season one.
VENUES One aspect that defines the awe-inspiring beauty of the show is the grand country homes and sweeping ballrooms. As nearly all of the filming for the show took place in the South of England, many of the real locations you see in the show can in fact be hired out for your wedding celebrations. In the opening episode of the first season, the outdoor Vauxhall Ball set the standard for the grandness we could expect. The parklands of Stowe House (www.stowe.co.uk) in Bedfordshire was the location for these scenes, the 17th-century Ducal Palace boasts individuality and elegance for a fairytale wedding. The ballrooms in Leigh Court (www.leighcourt.co.uk) in Bristol are where we see many of the characters dance together at a number of parties held throughout the series. The 19th-century mansion is surrounded by 27 acres of wooded grounds and green lawns, and the grand double staircase in the Great Hall is perfect for making your first entrance as a married couple.
Many of us are captivated by the opulence and extravagance of high society shown on our screens and so desperate to feed some historical glamour into our own lives – especially during our big day. Regency era and Bridgerton-themed celebrations are set to be one of the biggest wedding trends this year. Achieving this lavish style may seem impossible at first but we’ve broken down some of the simplest ways to inject 18th-century luxury into your nuptials.
COLOUR PALETTE The Regency era was defined by the baby blue colour that can be spotted in almost every episode. Known as Regency blue, it is the perfect hue to weave into your flowers, decorations or dress code. For a 21st-century update, Pantone have named the colour of 2022 ‘Very Peri’. The shade of violet-infused blue is perfect for a subtle nod to the Bridgerton world. Soft tones of blush and pink were also extremely popular at the time and are perfect for creating an ultra romantic setting when you tie the knot. Take inspiration from Princess Beatrice of York’s wedding to Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in summer of 2020, the pretty pinks and fresh natural palette were a more modern twist on a classic regal wedding. 59
INVITATIONS Sending out your invitations to your guests is one of the first ways to set the tone for your wedding. Handwritten notes featuring swooping calligraphy perfectly encapsulate the elegant nature of your celebration. Incorporate watercolour and impressionist-style florals into your stationery for a whimsical affair. Gold detailing and other refined touches make sure your wedding stationery gives a perfect nod to the Regency era. Sealing your invites with a wax seal will make guests feel as though they’re receiving salacious gossip from Lady Whistledown herself.

FASHION It’s not just on screen fashion that has been inspired by the extravagance of the Regency era. Those attending this year’s Met Gala were asked to adhere to the dress code ‘Gilded Glamour’, taking inspiration from the high society of Gilded Age New York during the late 1800s. For a wedding gown fit to make you a diamond of the first water lots of inspiration can be taken from the dresses of this time. Empire waist gowns were extremely popular during the time period and it’s unsurprising considering how flattering they are. For an ultraromantic style look for a dress with capped sleeves also. Corsets were, of course, a huge part of fashion in the Regency era and now they are once again having resurgence. Whilst during the time 60
period they were a part of the undergarments worn by the bride, now they can be a featured part of your ensemble. One easy way to add a touch of gilded glamour to your look is by accessorising with opera gloves. To modernise your wedding gown a sheer pair is the way forward. Grooms can take inspiration from the dukes of Bridgerton and wear a morning suit complete with a tailcoat for a look that can compete with Jane Austen’s Mr Darcy. To ensure all your guests are involved with the theme of your celebrations, a black tie or formal wear dress code can encourage everyone to attend in their finery.

FLOWERS Any watcher of Bridgerton will know the budget they had for flowers when making the show was pretty impressive. The dreamy purple wisteria that draped over the exterior of the Bridgerton family’s residence caused fans mass hysteria, as many were keen to recreate the swoon-worthy look. Although it can be hard to get your hands on, if you’re having a spring time wedding you may be lucky as many country house wedding venues have wisteria climbing up the outside of their buildings. It’s definitely something worth asking your venue about. If you want to recreate the lush floral arrangements seen in Daphne’s wedding to the Duke of Hastings in the first season, shown last year, English garden-style arrangements with fresh greenery are best to create that clean and natural setting. Standing beneath a floral arch, just like Daphne and Simon, when saying your vows will ensure your photographer can capture some dreamy and ethereal images from your ceremony.
INSPIRATION
CAKE One of the most spectacular visuals from Daphne and Simon’s wedding was a massive wedding cake that stood at 4.5-foot tall. In addition to its impressive height, the centrepiece was extremely detailed, right down to the Bridgerton and Hastings crests iced on. Detailed, extravagant cakes are certainly making a comeback in 2022. This year the UK’s oldest British caterer is recreating a royal wedding cake made by its founder 126 years ago, to celebrate their 175th anniversary. Searcy’s catering (https://searcys.co.uk) has taken a trip back through its archives to the cake made for the1896 royal wedding of Princess Maud, then the future Queen of Norway, to Prince Carl of Denmark. Five-tiers of Dundee fruit cake are covered with delicate marzipan and white and gold lattice work icing before topped with carefully crafted sugar work of flowers, fruits, cherubs and lions – all recreated by the cakemakers. This style of cake is perfect for those going all out regalia-inspired on their wedding day. Pressed floral cakes are a great option for those still inspired by the 18th century but wanting a more earthy, whimsical feel for their day. Bakeries typically use edible flowers grown, picked and hand-pressed. They can be designed according to your favourite flowers and even match your bouquet.
ENTERTAINMENT One of the most memorable elements of Bridgerton that audiences hold close to their heart is the orchestral renditions of pop songs throughout the show. Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift played by string ensemble provides the backdrop for Anthony Bridgerton and Kate Sharma’s courtship in season two. If you wish to recreate this soundtrack for your own love story, a string quartet or harpist will produce the perfect atmosphere for walking down the aisle or during your first dance. If you too want a mixture of classical and chart tunes, ask your guests to suggest some of their favourite tracks to be played by your musicians. If you plan on getting hitched in the warmer months, traditional lawn games are an amazing era-inspired way to entertain your guests after the ceremony. A game of croquet before the evening celebrations is fun for both young and older guests alike.
DECORATION Maximalists rejoice as the only way to decorate a Regency era-inspired wedding is to go all out. And we mean ALL OUT. Look to see if your venue has a chandelier, as this is a perfect way to recreate the grand atmosphere seen in the Bridgerton world. Oversized centrepieces are a signature of nearly all the weddings and balls held in the series. Work with your florist and wedding planner to create some awe-inspiring table decorations your guest will remember.
For your tableware, fine, floral china is a gorgeous nod to 18th-century Britain and the perfect decorative touch for the detail-orientated bride. Gold cutlery or gold-rimmed glassware flaunt opulence and abundance but can be inexpensive if hired. Having a champagne tower at your reception is the perfect indulgence enjoyed by high society – and your guests too. It’s a great touch to follow your wedding toast or a grand welcome as your guests enter. 61

FRENCH Luxury, high-end vibes were at the heart of this shoot
B
eing inspired by the beautiful Orangery at Gunnersbury Park, photographer Charlene Webb, gathered a team of local creatives to bring her vision to life. “I wanted to create something luxury and high end, while showcasing the stunning grounds,” she explains. “When I visited the venue, it was as if I was teleported into France with parts of the grounds emulating a French chateau. This gave me the inspiration for the mood board,” says Charlene. For the styling, the tablescape was classic in its design with hints of green from the foliage. “I added lilac and purple to the floral installations around the fireplace, they looked amazing,” she adds. The stairs were lined with similar floral displays adding to the chic elegant design. When it came to the attire, Charlene opted for a romantic style. “I chose dresses that were whimsical, and our brides’ hair and make-up was also inspired by French chic with the elegant wave and updo,” she says. The décor, surroundings and the bride and groom’s styling all came together perfectly to create this gorgeous shoot. 63

PURA ANADA NATURAL BLACK MASCARA £14.50, https://liveinthelight.co.uk “Hypoallergenic, ph balanced, paraben-free, gluten-free, mercury-free and formulated with eco-cert approved ingredients – what’s the catch? There doesn’t seem to be one! I was a touch sceptical at first, but I’m actually rather impressed with it. The formula is silky when wet and completely matte when dry. Although I didn’t put it to the test of crying and have no skin allergies, I can confirm that it’s smudge-proof, builds well without getting claggy and was very kind on my eyes.” – Beth Morton
PERRICONE MD NO MAKEUP EYESHADOW £30, www.perriconemd.co.uk “In the spirit of full disclosure, I did not get this No Makeup concept initially. But having tried it, I’m more than a convert, I’m an addict! The light-reflecting pigments provide a soft, satin finish while the serum texture formulated with acyl-glutathione means it glides on and blends like a dream. It didn’t crease and my eyes looked brighter. It also acts as a great base for a bolder eyeshadow look, but works just as well on its own for subtle everyday wear.” – Kelly Andrews
OPV LOOSE PIGMENT £8.50, www.opvbeauty.com “I’ve never tried loose pigment eyeshadows before and was sceptical when these first arrived in the office, but after just one application, I was hooked! These highly-concentrated products are easy to apply and are vegan and cruelty-free – a huge bonus. I love how you can create a soft and subtle look or build up the product for more glam.” – Olivia Gibson 80
EYEKO LONDON LIMITLESS EYESHADOW PALETTE £25, www.lookfantastic.com “Shimmering champagne gold is the most subtle of this palette’s six-shade collection, creating a soft, glowing look that I loved. While those looking for a bold, striking look, will adore the darker brown options. The other shades are red/gold inspired and all suited my skin tone perfectly. Each hue is easily blendable and all work well as a subtle daytime or standout evening look. They’re long-lasting and after a full day, my eyes still looked fabulous.” – Melissa Barker
YOU CAUGHT MY EYE! We put together some gorgeous weddingday eye make-up looks using the newest launches to hit the shelves ICONIC LONDON GLAZE CRAYONS £24, www.iconiclondon.com “I’m always on the lookout for pigmented eyeshadows that are quick and easy to apply, and this dual-ended product didn’t disappoint. On one end of the stick is a creamy crayon that glides over the eyes and blends out beautifully, then flip the product over to find a non-sticky glitter liquid that stays on all day – it’s the perfect duo!” – Olivia Gibson DECK OF SCARLET OVER-ARCHING BROW KIT £34, www.deckofscarlet.com “This fab new kit has everything you need to create the perfect brow. I won’t lie I panicked slightly when I opened it up, not knowing where to start, but the super-helpful folk at Deck of Scarlet have included a stepby-step how to on the reverse, so all was well. The final look is subtle and totally natural, the perfect complement to a bridal make-up look. The highlight for me is the sculpting wax. It held my brows in place all day without leaving them feeling greasy or crunchy – both of which I’ve experienced with other products!” – Kelly Andrews

Q&A Look the best version of you with our expert advice
CARE FOR YOUR HAIR We get married just after summer so I’m worried that my hair won’t be in the best condition after the sun, sea and sand. Help? It’s important to be able to enjoy your holidays whilst making sure that your hair still looks amazing. Here are some ways to summer-proof your hair… ♥ Protect your locks – The sun acts like a bleach due to its UVA rays, whilst UVB rays are responsible for breakage. You should protect your hair and scalp against both. I’d recommend applying Biolage Sunsorials Protective Hair Non-Oil. ♥ Detangle after dipping – Pack a detangling spray and apply it every time you’ve taken a dip in the sea or pool before combing (not brushing!) through. This will detangle, smooth and strengthen the hair. Biolage All in One Coconut Infusion Spray is great for this. It’s important to use a comb over a brush because wet hair is more susceptible to damage, and brush bristles can cause tearing. ♥ Condition – Coat your hair in a conditioning treatment and tie it into a bun so it gets to work while you go about your business. Healthy
hair will only absorb what it needs, so be careful not to overload. Stick to doing this twice a week after shampooing. ♥ Keep your colour - Colour-fade is amplified during summer. Tap water also contributes because it contains minerals that aren’t great for the hair. This results in dull looking colour. It’s unreasonable to use bottled water each time we wash our hair, so the next best thing is a metal detoxing shampoo and conditioner. L’Oreal’s Matrix Detox range is exceptional. ♥ Fight frizz – Keeping frizz at bay can be a real challenge for the curl community when humidity’s high. Look for products that block out moisture from the atmosphere. I’d recommend Kerastase Discipline Fluidissime Spray that lasts for up to 72 hours. Oribe’s Impermeable Anti Humidity Spray is also fantastic. Neil Moodie | Neil Moodie Studio www.neilmoodiestudio.com
LOOK GOOD, FEEL GREAT My big day’s nine months away, so I feel now’s the time to kick-start a healthier lifestyle. What do you suggest would be the best routine for me to get into? The good news is you’ve given yourself plenty of time to get into the best shape. A routine consisting mainly of a well-structured resistance program with a touch of HIIT and steady cardio throughout the week will ensure consistent progress to being wedding-ready. I’d also recommend taking up a class that you enjoy, whether it’s pilates, boxing or yoga. Here’s an example of how to structure your training: Day 1 – 40 minutes of resistance training followed by 15 minutes of HIIT Day 2 – Pilates, boxing, yoga or dance Day 3 – Active rest such as swimming, a long walk or bike ride Day 4 – 40 minutes of resistance training followed by 15 minutes of steady state cardio Day 5 – 40 minutes of steady state cardio Day 6 – 20 minutes of resistance training followed by 20 minutes HIIT and 10 minutes steady cardio At The Lanesborough Club and Spa we’ve recently opened our doors to day guests to experience the new HIIT and Healthy Package, which includes a healthy breakfast, HIIT class, one-hour personal training session with myself, a nutritious lunch, 60-minute spa treatment and day spa access. Find out more on our website. I look forward to seeing you there! Irfan Ahmend | Personal Trainer | www.lanesboroughclubandspa.com 82
ACCESSORISE IN STYLE My dress is quite simple so I can go all out with my accessories. How can I add the finishing touches to give me the bridal wow-factor? The last thing you put on is the first thing people notice. Many brides now opt for simple dresses and express their personalities through their bridal accessories. Continue to make a striking and dramatic entrance throughout your day by changing your statement-making finishing touches. For example, you could wear a floor sweeping cathedral veil for the ceremony, then change into a regal long cape for the reception, which will also help to protect you from the chilly evening breeze. The most important thing is to have fun experimenting with different looks until you find exactly what you’re looking for! Gift Kenrick | Love Lane London www.lovelanelondon.com

HOT TOPIC
Our local pros answer your big-day woes SUMMER STYLE We’re getting married in the peak of summer, so I don’t want my dress to feel too heavy and hot. What collections are ideal for this time of the year and why? Our Ronald Joyce dresses are very popular with brides who are getting married during the summer months or abroad. We stock several styles that are made in a light floaty chiffon, which is great for hot temperatures as the gowns don’t feel too heavy to wear and they allow for easy movement, which we find a lot of brides want to wear. The gowns are also structured enough to be worn without a bra, which is excellent as you don’t need to wear extra layers and feel uncomfortable on those warmer days. Claire Weekes | The Wedding Wardrobe www.waterlooweddingwardrobe.co.uk
VIBRANT MENUS We want to treat our guests to a menu they won’t forget. Do you have any suggestions for food and drink with the added wow-factor? At Leila Catering mix mezze is the dish choice that really has the wow-factor and is popular with most couples for their wedding banquet. There’s an extraordinary variety of exciting tastes, colours and textures with this dish and it presents really beautifully for your wedding photos. Guests usually receive a selection of hummus, baba ghanouj, fattoush salad, falafel, cheese roll and batata darna, making for a delicious, shareable meal that’ll get your guests talking and bring everyone together in a combination of brilliant flavours. Middle Eastern cuisine’s often forgotten by so many people as a catering option for events. We all love a good greasy kebab on a night out, so why not delve further into the cuisine? The mix mezze allows those who aren’t so familiar with the cuisine to explore the incredible dishes and flavours that Lebanese food has to offer. You can’t really go wrong when there’s such a wide variety of options in this one dish – everyone will find something they enjoy! And the best part is that it’s all Halal, so accessible to everyone. ASK THE EXPERTS
THE PERFECT SETTING We’ve been saving for a few years and have a decent budget for our wedding. When looking for a wedding venue what do you suggest we look for to maximise our budget and to make our day more than just the wedding itself? It all depends on what setting you’re looking for, but I’d always suggest that you opt for one with beautiful surroundings as a starting point. We’re very fortunate that St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel is steeped in British heritage but also provides a selection of diverse and dynamic spaces – providing options for weddings big and small. From Victorian grandeur and the world-renowned grand staircase where you can officially tie the knot to intricately carved arches, and grand French
doors leading to an exclusive private terrace. There are backdrops here for all types of weddings, which is important to look for when looking at potential venues. Some couples choose to spread their celebration over a few days and why not? At our venue, guests are invited to relax and unwind before the big day and enjoy a luxury Chambers Suite, pampering session in the spa and pre-wedding dinner in the Booking Office 1869. Ed White | St Pancras Renaissance Hotel www.marriott.com/en-us/hotels/lonpr-st-pancrasrenaissance-hotel-london
BIG-DAY SHOOT My partner’s extremely camera shy so I’m worried about our photos not looking natural. What advice can you share and how can you help with that on the day? Being camera shy is like a vicious circle, you feel awkward in front of a camera, it shows in the final photo, you don’t like the final photo and so the cycle continues. We have several tips and tricks to overcome this, first off is having a pre-wedding photoshoot. This may sound like a baptism of fire, but the number of our couples that have gone into a pre-wedding shoot feeling shy and nervous, and finished being much more comfortable and having enjoyed it, is countless. Another thing to remember is that many photos are taken from a distance, leaving couples to relax and chat a little, rather than having a camera up close and in their face. When looking either at each other, or ‘off-camera’, they almost forget we’re there. We find shooting this way produces natural photos from even the most camera-shy person. Ultimately, trust your photographer! They’ll work with you to help you feel more at ease and less awkward when having photos. Jeff Oliver | Jeff Oliver Photography https://jeffoliverphotography.com
CHILD’S PLAY We want to invite children to our wedding but how can we keep them happy and prevent them getting bored? When planning your wedding, you might be faced with that difficult decision of whether children will be invited. Many couples choose to keep their big day to adults only, to save on costs and to prevent bored little ones running around and causing havoc. Inviting children to your wedding can add magic to your day and it doesn’t need to be stressful. All you need to do is make sure they’re suitably entertained. During your reception, children can become restless, and that’s why it’s important to keep them busy. It can be something as simple as giving them an activity pack to complete during the wedding breakfast and during the summer months, outdoor games such as giant Jenga will go down a storm. If you have lots of children attending your wedding, I’d recommend getting in touch with an entertainment supplier – they can work with you to maximise the space at your venue and can plan activities throughout the day to keep guests of all ages entertained throughout. Stay in a five-star inn in the heart of the Lake District at The Wild Boar
T
he Wild Boar Inn is set adjacent to 72 acres of beautiful woodland with its own tarn and some beautiful wild settings. A traditional Lakeland inn with oak beams, log fires, an in-house microbrewery and smokehouse all in the rolling countryside of the Gilpin Valley. For the discerning foodie, when it comes to food there’s an extensive choice: from sharing plates to succulent steaks, traditional British to Mediterranean, its Alternative Afternoon Tea and Wild Afternoon Tea Picnic – there’s certainly something for everyone!
WILD WEDDINGS AT THE WILD BOAR One of the best things on offer is... choice! There are indoor-outdoor options of where to exchange vows, home-brewed beer and a library of single malt whiskies, outdoor activities in its stunning woodland, as well as a choice of individually designed rooms and suites for the couple and their wedding party. Nearlyweds can also choose: a Lake District Falconry Hawk Walk in the woods – perfect for stunning photographs – Clay Pigeon Shooting, Archery or even Axe Throwing on the day! For those who want to embrace the outdoors completely, why not opt for a tipi wedding? From the first enquiry, the dedicated wedding coordinator will ensure that you have all the information needed to create a dream day. After a show round of the inn, grounds and woodland you’ll be offered support right up to the wedding and beyond. The team are happy to introduce to you to a great selection of local wedding suppliers hand-picked for their quality and expertise. When it comes to the all-important wedding breakfast, with the
aforementioned culinary options on offer, the chef is also happy to discuss your bespoke ideas. The Wild Boar can comfortably accommodate between 70 to 90 guests for the wedding breakfast, and between 70 to 130 guests for the evening buffet. Creating the picture-perfect backdrop for a stunning wedding album is easy here both within the inn and in the beautiful woodland. Travel goals
An island country nestled in South Asia, Sri Lanka has always been a bucket-list destination for Louise Prance, with her recent trip living up to her expectations and then some…
T
here were countless reasons why Sri Lanka was my number one bucket list destination – with the tropical island pipping New Zealand, the Maldives and Vietnam to the top spot – but the one that stood out to me is the fact it is a Buddhist country, with a culture based on peace and family. While the unstable social climate was garnering news coverage at the time of my trip, there is not one point during my stay that I felt any unrest. From the second the tropical heat hit me as I arrived, to the moment I stepped back on the plane with a heavy heart upon my departure, I felt totally secure.
MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES The flight time may be long, however, it was comfortable, and oh boy, does Sri Lanka make up for the time spent in the air. Upon arrival at the airport, we were whisked away at a rate of knots towards our destination of Cinnamon Bentota Beach hotel. My advice? Save the jet lag slumber for a little while longer, as you’d be mistaken to not fully immerse yourself in the changing landscape you’ll experience on the journey there. The hustle and bustle of Colombo is an assault to the senses – albeit an exciting one. Arriving in the morning, we watched as parents took their children to school on TukTuks and workers started their day. However, soon enough, the city rolled away and we were treated to the lush green landscape Sri Lanka is so famous for. Arriving at the Cinnamon Beach Hotel was an altogether memorable experience. A luxurious property nestled in the mesmerising Indian Ocean 94
along the southern coast of Sri Lanka, it has a heritage dating back to the 60’s and was designed by one of Asia’s most influential architects, Geoffrey Bawa. It is the ultimate tropical destination perfect for an art and architecture enthusiast or a lover of exquisite oceans.
A GASTRONOMIC DELIGHT While tired and hungry from our journey, these emotions were soon replaced with appreciation of the traditional welcome we received. Heading into the hotel we were given a quick tour of the awe-inspiring grounds and facilities, and it was straight down to breakfast. With many restaurants on site, Ottimo and Zest are used as a buffet option for all three meals, suffice to say, there’s something for everyone. However, when in Rome and all that – we immediately tucked into curry for breakfast, a habit we all continued throughout the stay. If you’re looking for something ala carte, the beachside Sea-MeatsSpice Seafood restaurant is the place to be. With the Head Chef looking after the menu, be prepared for a gastronomical sensation, before retiring to the plush sofas for a sundowner with the sand between your toes. The Fuze bar is perfect for a nightcap, and with dramatic ceilings and art aplenty, it oozes luxury. Other highlights for fellow foodies included high tea looking out over the ocean, plus the authentic Sri Lankan cooking lesson and Chef’s Table Experience and dinner – all of which are able to be booked directly through the hotel. If you’re looking for a special honeymoon treat – I’d recommend all of the above!
HONEYMOONS
ART AND CULTURE Well known for its jungles, Sri Lanka certainly didn’t disappoint on this front. Tearing ourselves away from the array of calming pools – and pool bar – we headed to the Lunuganga Geoffrey Bawa’s Country Estate, where we were treated to a tour. If art and culture is your thing – this is one excursion not to be missed. The country house of the renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, the estate is just a short distance from the hotel, and had been used as a cinnamon estate during the Dutch era and then a rubber plantation under the British. In 1949, the estate was bought by Bawa and was converted into a weekend house where he created a tropical version of a European Renaissance Garden. It took the architect 40 years to complete the house.
OUT ON THE WATER However, for me, the highlight was most definitely the boat ride on the Madu Ganga and visit to the Mangrove Forest. With an excellent tour guide, we jetted down the river doing our best to spot all the animals that were highlighted as making the river their home. From bear monkeys to water monitors to jellyfish, to kingfisher’s – it was a veritable treat for an animal lover like me. The jury is still out on whether I’m happy or disappointed that the crocodiles kept themselves at bay. And with Mangrove forests stabilising the coastline, reducing erosion from storm surges, currents, waves, and tides, the intricate root system of mangroves also makes these forests attractive to fish and other organisms seeking food and shelter from predators. With little stops along the way, it was truly special to see cinnamon being made amidst the forest – and I’d recommend bringing some pocket change as it’ll be a feat to walk away empty handed. If you’re one for a spot of shopping combined with a walking tour of a beautiful town, make sure you head to Galle. We combined this with the river tour, and it was well worth the hour’s drive. A stunning town steeped in history there are views for miles and it would be well worth booking with Walkers Tours, and in particular Ashoka Dissanayke, to learn more about this beautifully resplendent town’s heritage. If you do head to Galle, don’t forget to leave space in your luggage for your journey home. With boutique shops and traditional stores alike, I’d challenge anyone to leave empty handed. If you’re looking for souvenirs or mementos of your trip – this is the place to get them.
TOURISM SUPPORT Sri Lanka has had its fair share of upheaval, from the 2004 Tsunami, the terrorist attacks in 2019 and now the national crisis. However, in my opinion this is all the more reason to go and visit this wonderful country, and give its tourism industry the boost it so desperately needs. Not only did I feel safe wherever I travelled in Sri Lanka, I am already planning my next trip back, and this time I may buy an open-ended ticket home…
A PEACEFUL NIGHT’S SLEEP Cinnamon Bentota Beach offers 16 Suites with unique sets of artworks that were commissioned from Sri Lankan artists as part of Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts’ pledge to support the local arts and crafts. Eight artists were commissioned to depict a theme and record what they felt the name of the suite meant to them - resulting in each suite telling a story of the people and languages of Sri Lanka.
ADRENALINE JUNKIE If watersports are your thing, you won’t be disappointed at Cinnamon Bentota Beach. Taking place on the Bentota river, there are endless options from water skiing, to jet skis, banana boats and doughnuts. While first trying my hand at the doughnuts, the jet ski was a definite front runner. With the water so calm and the river so vast, it was the perfect opportunity to open up and let rip!

Caribbean vibes Enjoy breathtaking, tropical views whilst listening to turquoise waters rolling in with a glass of St. Lucia’s famous rum punch in hand
A
s the St. Lucians say, “No pressure, no problem!” So many tropical islands provide luxury, but only St. Lucia offers this alongside the feeling of joy and laughter courtesy of the amazing people. Such a friendly country, I was so warmly welcomed – and laughed a lot! This is the ultimate location to unwind after planning your big day. If you don’t know much about St. Lucia, it’s an eastern Caribbean Island with a pair of dramatically tapered mountains, known as the Pitons. These volcanic mounds are a spectacular landmark of the island, lush and green and ready for the adventurer in you to explore. St. Lucia’s tropical climate makes it a prime spot for year-round sunshine and warm weather. Prepare for short downpours as those surrounding rainforests bursting with colour need watering.

If your honeymoon is more of a familymoon, the resort has you covered with its awesome Kids Club and babysitting service. What more could you ask for?
HONEYMOONS
ACCOMMODATION Whatever your accommodation preference: marina view, beachfront or ocean view, you’ll be blown away. My marina view suite was equipped with a state-of-the-art kitchen and private plunge pool. Listening to the birds with a cup of tea in hand in my plunge pool is a memory I’ll never forget.
THE LANDINGS SPA The revamped, luxurious 7,000-square-foot spa at The Landings features serene therapy rooms, some with outdoor hydrotherapy terraces so you can relax and take in the views after your treatment. As well as enjoying massages, manis and pedis, you can request a hair stylist to ensure your locks have full attention during your fabulous stay. There’s also a state-of-the-art fitness centre with on-site staff and personal trainers to keep you in shape.
ST. LUCIAN CUISINE You can’t go to the Caribbean without enjoying the freshest seafood. However, the local specialties are a must try from curried goat to breadfruit (similar to potatoes but sweeter and starchier), and saltfish (stewed fish, which is usually sold dried and salted, with boiled green bananas, locally referred to as green fig).
EXCURSIONS If you like to do more than lay on a sun lounger, then St. Lucia has much to offer whether that’s zip-ling through the rainforest or taking a guided hike up St. Lucia’s signature Pitons. During my stay, I enjoyed a visit to Project Chocolat from the well-known Hotel Chocolat. I was blown away by the luscious rainforest location, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to the cacao groves. I was then invited to make my very own chocolate bar and tasted some amazing foods from their cacao inspired menu which included cacao mac ‘n cheese and even cacao burgers!
FIVE STAR LUXURY If you really want to push the boat out for your once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon, then take the transfer from Hewanorra International Airport to the resort via private helicopter. Just let The Landings know and they’ll arrange it all! Furthermore, to extend the luxe package, you can request a butler service to make your stay as carefree and relaxing as possible.
