oes anyone else feel like they’ve been on a rollercoaster ride over the past year? From lockdowns and restrictions to WFH and Zoom calls – these are all things we have learned to adapt to. tephanie and Toby met at work in Houston, Texas, where their friendship soon turned into a relationship – despite the fact that they knew it would soon become long-distance. “He was an offshore geophysicist, whereas I was onshore in Texas,” Stephanie explains. “He would be at sea for five to eight weeks at a time, during which we would talk on the phone every night. The distance strengthened our relationship.” Toby would split his time onshore between visiting his family in the UK and across the pond seeing Stephanie. The couple decided to get married after a lot of frustrations when Toby would visit Stephanie in the USA, as immigration didn’t like the frequency of his trips. “We knew we’d be together forever, so why wait?” Stephanie says. “We got married on our own, but my husband still wanted to do a proper proposal, which lead us to having a big wedding with all our family and friends two years later during our anniversary week.” So Toby popped the question to his wife on a romantic trip to the Ukraine, before jetting off to Morocco for an engagement-moon! The pair decided London was the place to hold their celebrations, and set the date for 29th June, 2019. We caught up with Stephanie to find out more…

THE PERFECT SETTING The historic Draper’s Hall was the setting of choice. “Several members of the royal family have attended events there. In fact, Harry and Meghan were there a few months before our wedding,” Stephanie says. “It’s also featured in a number of films, from GoldenEye to The King’s Speech.” The central location next to Tower Bridge was a winner too, given that half of the guests would be coming from the States. The thing that sealed the deal was the beauty of the venue. “As we were planning the wedding from the USA, decorations would be another thing to sort out,” Stephanie says. “So we picked a gorgeous venue that had its own flair. You can see in the photos the shocked look on our guests’ faces when they walked into the dining room and saw the stunning ceiling!”

PUTTING THEIR STAMP ON The wedding palette was pink with rose gold touches. As the couple are both geologists, they used that as a subtle theme throughout too, from the styling touches to the agate-themed stationery. “We had slabs of rock cut and polished for our centrepieces, along with flowers and a candelabra,” Stephanie says. “We also had a pink geode cake! The topper was a replica of us with our two corgis. They were back home in Texas so it was nice to incorporate them.” A friend photoshopped the couple’s corgi’s heads on to some royal-looking bodies and had them printed on canvases. “We put them up in the venue, alongside a portrait of the Queen,” Stephanie says. “They blended in so well that people thought they were the Queen’s dogs!” In the evening, a DJ got the party started, along with two electric violinists who were identical twins. “We also had a photo booth,” the bride says. “A copy of each photo went into a guest book – that was a real hit!”

AISLE STYLE Stephanie found her showstopping Enaura Bridal gown at Kleinfield Bridal in New York, which is where Say Yes to the Dress is filmed. “There was an Enaura Bridal trunk show in the store and the designer was there,” Stephanie tells us. “I couldn’t quite find a dress I liked, so he designed a one-of-a-kind dress for me, with two looks. There was the main dress, plus an overskirt and off-the-shoulder straps. This gave me a regal look for the ceremony, but I could 35

then take off the skirt and straps to allow me to dance the night away!” The dress was very well travelled, first being shipped from NYC to Houston, then back to NYC for Stephanie’s hen party, then on another flight to London. “I got really nervous when the airline said that they would have to start putting carry-on bags in the hold,” Stephanie says. “Luckily, the staff were great and let me board early and make sure my dress was safe in the cabin.” Toby and his groomsmen looked dashing in Ted Baker tuxedoes. The groom also wore mini geode cufflinks, which Stephanie gave him as a wedding gift. The bridesmaids stunned in sequinned one-shoulder gowns, tying in beautifully with the bride’s shoes. “We also wore matching bracelets that I bought as gifts for my bridal party for being the best friends anyone could ask for!” Stephanie tells us.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS As the couple were already married, it allowed them to have a more personal ceremony lead by one of their good friends, and featuring vows they had written themselves. They also wanted to include a unity ceremony, and decided to mix gin and tonic in a symbolic gesture. “We went to The Ginstitute in London to make our own gin a couple of days before,” the bride explains. “We then picked a FeverTree tonic that went best with our gin and used that in the ceremony.” The sort-of-newlyweds had a surprise for their guests too. “During my speech I revealed that we were already married,” Stephanie laughs. “Most people at the wedding didn’t know that we had already been married for two years. t may not be your classic love story, but it was a head butt that brought Charlotte and Alex together. They met at work on Dean Street in Soho, but didn’t get together until after Charlotte left; they’d always got on but it took a while to realise there was more to it than that. “It was Charlotte head butting me in jest on a night out with friends when it all started,” Alex laughs. “We began dating and spent a lot of time exploring the bars of Soho through a shared love of noodles and bloody Marys. Eventually, one very early morning on Waterloo Bridge, as the sun rose over London, we fell in love. Although Charlotte still thinks the head butt has a lot to do with it.” After a month travelling around Australia in a campervan, and Charlotte not abandoning him on the roadside, Alex realised that she was the one and began making plans to pop the question. “On Christmas Day I dutifully got down on one knee, promptly burst into tears and somehow got out the words ‘will you marry me?’,” Alex says. The lovedup pair got planning their dream day for 17th October, 2020, and while the pandemic meant their plans changed drastically, they still got to have an epic Soho wedding. ayley caught Jake’s eye straight away – so much so that he asked a mutual friend to set them up. “She was beautiful and feisty; in one word: dangerous!” Jake laughs. “She couldn’t have been less interested in me!” Jake clearly liked a challenge, as three years later, after a lot of persistence, he had won her over and they became a couple. Fast forward into their relationship, and Hayley and Jake are on a night away at The Crazy Bear Beaconsfield. The trendy, luxury hotel was the perfect place for Jake to pop the question, and luckily for him, Hayley said “Yes”. Back home, the pair started planning their dream September wedding. Hayley fills us in on the details…

We wanted to get married somewhere local, and we loved the intimate feel and beautiful grounds at Hendon Hall Hotel.

We opted for a purple and pink colour palette, and we created a contemporary feel with modern chandeliers for centrepieces.

Continuing the modern vibe, we decided against a traditional cake and instead treated our guests to a doughnut wall from Eat Me Events.

REAL WEDDINGS

My fitted lace dress was from Confetti & Lace, while Jake looked handsome in a dark grey Hugo Boss suit with pink accessories.

Traditionally, the ceremony ends with the groom stomping on a glass. This is the signal that the marriage and party is about to start. On the day, we felt so happy and excited. It was wonderful having our friends and family around us.

Our loved ones made the day extra-special, as did our brilliant photographer, Edwin Marcow.

The evening kicked off with our lived band, Mixed Feelings. Everyone got involved by singing and dancing along!.

My top tip for to-be-weds is to give yourself plenty of time to prepare. On the day, stay chilled, drink champagne and have fun!

e were in love with the gorgeously muted shades of this styled shoot as soon as we saw it. Combining cream, salmon-pink and sweet shades of toffee, all accented with eucalyptus, it’s a palette that would look right at home in any setting – but it looks particularly beautiful in the historic Trafalgar Tavern. It was initially Harley of Harley’s Flowers and Jennifer of Into The Wild Florist who teamed up to produce new work for their portfolios, as the pandemic had put paid to much of their wedding season. “We though it’d be great to have a model,” Harley says. “I approached Hazel from Gillian Roberts Bridal to see if her daughter, Honey, would model for us. Hazel was very excited about the collaboration and provided the gorgeous dresses and headpieces, as well as putting us in touch with some super-talented suppliers. My friend suggested I have my dress made; I love the idea but it seems daunting. What’s involved? There’s no need to feel daunted; going bespoke is a very rewarding process and the end result is extra-special and unique. It’s also a lovely way to incorporate something personal into your look – perhaps a piece of veil, some fabric or a button from your mother’s or grandmother’s dress. We start the process with a meeting to discuss your ideas. This might be from magazine clippings, a Pinterest board or photos of dresses you’ve tried on. It’s a good idea to not only look at wedding dresses, as often the design may stem from a red-carpet look or a favourite dress you already own. From this, a toile is made, which is a mock-up of the dress in a practice fabric made to your measurements. This allows us to get the fit just right, while giving you the chance to make any design changes before the dress is made in your chosen fabric. We then create the final dress and have a fitting to check everything is perfect before you take the finished gown home. You are in control the whole way through, from the concept sketch to the final look.

As we’ve all been wearing comfortable and functional clothing throughout the pandemic, when weddings return, glamour will be coming back in a big way! Brides will want to be seen, have fun and dress up. The fact you have a simple dress is perfect, as it means you can go wild with your headwear. Another trend that is coming in is a move towards more eco-friendly options: sustainable and vegan fabrics, ethically sourced feathers, recycled elements and vintage pieces. Consumers don’t want to throw things away anymore, instead making choices with the environment, nature and waste reduction in mind. I love using vintage fabrics from family members. We’ve all come to realise how important and precious family is, and this is a lovely way to celebrate that. It’s a great investment to buy something bespoke and handmade from a designer, rather than off-the-peg. This means you will have a unique and special piece to treasure forever.

So, I wasn’t too sure what to expect of this tool. I did my research on the benefits, genned up on this super-useful tutorial and I was ready to go. Wow, I don’t know what I was so worried about. It was easy to do and took no more than five to 10 minutes. Probably 10 for me as I got a bit addicted and couldn’t stop – I don’t recommend that though. It’s an incredibly satisfying process seeing all of that peach fuzz and dead skin disappear. I couldn’t believe how smooth my skin felt afterwards. Leave your skin to rest for around eight hours afterwards before you apply any skin products or make-up as it’s quite an intense exfoliation process, then repeat every two to four weeks. I can’t wait to see how regular use improves my skin further. I’m definitely sold on dermaplaning!

I was surprised to find a balm texture when I first removed the lid, so was interested to see how this would go. Using the supplied spatula to remove the required amount of mask from the tub, I opted for generous dollop and began to massage it into my face as instructed. Do you have a picture of your dream dress in mind? I’ve tried on so many dresses, but I definitely have a vision. I think I’ve chosen the one. Completely understand you playing the cards close to your chest there! We look forward to the surprise. As the voice of experience, can you share with us your top wedding planning tips? I’d say, make sure you have a good wedding planner. Also, do the guest list, but don’t send the invitations out until later, as it’ll definitely alter as time goes on! So many couples have been forced to re-plan their weddings as a result of the pandemic. Have you encountered any such difficulties and do you have any advice for other couples facing the same challenges? We’ve considered moving the wedding, but

at the minute it’s a day-by-day update, so we’re going to make the final decision in the spring. If you’re not time restricted, I’d say move yours to 2022 if possible, so you can really enjoy the process rather than struggling through the pandemic. Leading a jam-packed celebrity lifestyle while planning a wedding must make you an extremely busy lady! How do you juggle it all while still looking fabulous and flawless? I love keeping busy, so I was really excited about planning a wedding on top of my already hectic lifestyle, but unfortunately

that hasn’t happened as the pandemic and various lockdowns have slowed me down. It has meant though that I’ve had plenty of time on my hands to plan the wedding! What are your make-up bag must haves? Q We’d love a beach honeymoon but with some action too. Where do you recommend for summer, and how can we make sure we’re protected if it gets cancelled? If it’s luxury combined with action you’re after, then my recommendation would be Bali. Although it’s a relatively small destination, there’s a huge range of things to do once you’ve soaked up the sun on the white sandy beaches of Nusa Dua. You could try surfing off the coast of Kuta, diving in Nusa Lembongan or hiking up Bali’s highest volcano, Gunung Agung. If you’re feeling more adventurous, try white-water rafting on the Sungai Ayung or the jungle swing in Bali’s cultural heartland, Ubud. A visit to the sacred monkey forest is also a highlight. With so many weddings rescheduled during the pandemic, many brides are finding themselves with a dress that they think won’t work for a different time of year. Hannah Faulder visits The Marylebone, and finds out that it offers the best of both worlds for a minimoon in the capital

s the country prepared for Lockdown Part II, my husband and I managed to sneak in a last-minute escape to the city to enjoy a much-needed retreat at The Marylebone. Nestled in the hotel’s supertrendy namesake neighbourhood, between the Georgian Welbeck Street and the partpedestrianised Marylebone Lane, you’re just a short walk from London’s most famous Monopoly locations, from Bond Street to Mayfair. Stepping out for a stroll from the hotel, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re in a bustling Cotswolds village – that is until you happen upon Oxford Street. But this is what makes it such a wonderful destination for a minimoon or post-wedding break: it’s close to the action, but it provides a tranquil retreat from it too.

STAY Cross the threshold, and you’ll find a neutral palette offsets the pops of colour and modern paintings on the walls perfectly. Look carefully, and you’ll notice a subtle design scheme reflecting the four seasons as you walk through the hotel. Following an extensive refurbishment, the striking decor extends throughout, and no luxurious touch has been spared. Classic timber flooring, marble-topped counters and wood panelling blend seamlessly with curated artwork and designer furniture. There’s a

whole host of event spaces too for weddings and celebrations with real character; I particularly loved the verdant Palm Room and the sociable al fresco terraces. Our corner suite was chic and fresh, its spacious circular layout houses a small kitchen area, complete with Nespresso machine, a sumptuous living area, dining table and huge marshmallowy bed. “We could live here,” my husband and I kept saying to each other. We sat, champagne in hand, and gazed out of the window over the pretty streets of Marylebone with the city lights glittering in the distance; it had a distinct Mary Poppins vibe. The striking marble bathroom boasted a huge bath, walk-in shower and trendy Malin+Goetz toiletries. The welcome pack with COVIDsafe goodies like hand sanitiser was gratefully received, and the hotel clearly states all the measures it has taken to look after guests’ wellbeing. Looking to really treat yourself and your loved one? The super-stylish Marylebone Suite has a showstopping cedar-clad terrace, with a retractable roof, awesome vistas and an outdoor TV and fireplace – it’s certainly memorable! While you’re here, why not treat yourself to some R&R in the Third Space Health Club, with its gym and 18m pool.

EAT We dragged ourselves away from the champagne and fluffy robes long enough to enjoy the hotel’s restaurant, 108 Brasserie. This is not a typical hotel restaurant, more a fabulous eatery for locals and tourists alike

that just happens to be attached. Set on the cobbles of Marylebone Lane, the outdoor seating with patio heaters makes it look so inviting. Inside, you’ll find traditional style with a modern edge, from rich upholstery and parquet flooring to antique mirrors and decadent florals. The meals on the globally inspired menu feature fresh ingredients with a focus on seasonality. Yummy burrata, salads and decadent desserts were the order of the day, making the restaurant a mustvisit for guests.

EXPLORE The next morning, we treated ourselves to a full English breakfast (one vegetarian) in bed, with hearty portions served under silver cloches, before heading out on foot to explore the neighbourhood. This soon turned into a wonderful day strolling through the nearby Royal Parks, spotting parrots and pelicans before ducking into a café for a takeaway coffee as we meandered up The Mall to take in Buckingham Palace. Next up was a stroll through Hyde Park and into the shopping mecca that is Oxford Street before heading back for a quiet drink at the hotel’s bar – perfection! If you don’t get the best weather, though, the capital’s attractions are within easy reach on public transport – or you could just hunker down in your room and luxuriate in your newly wedded bliss.
