aige and Dan had lived in the same area since they were children and first met 12 years ago. “We were both in The Lounge Bar in Chislehurst,” says Paige. “I knew one of Dan’s friends so I went over to say hello and there was an instant attraction.” Dan asked Paige for her number and their first date was arranged. “We went to Blackheath Village and I made my best friend (my maid-of-honour) come with me! Dan wasn’t impressed,” she recalls. Three years later, Dan Proposed. “He took me to the Berkeley

Hotel in Mayfair for my birthday and asked me to marry him. It was a lovely birthday surprise!” Soon after they put their plans into action and tied the knot four years later. “I was born in October and just love the month and that time of the year so our day had to be an autumnal one,” Paige explains. “It was always a joke between me and Dan that if he didn’t marry me before I was 30, I’d be upset. So he kept to his promise with three days to spare!” Here, Paige talks us through their special day… 31

olly and Thanasis met in the summer of 2014, whilst having drinks in Soho and hit it off immediately. “We spent the next few hours laughing and discovering shared interests and similarities,” Holly recalls. “We’d arranged the second date before we’d even finished the second round of drinks!” It was obviously meant to be because five years later, Thanasis proposed. “It was a complete surprise, albeit a lovely one after a long work week!” she says. They celebrated with Champagne before heading out for dinner. “Amusingly if anything I might have expected Thanasis to propose the following week as we were going on holiday to St. Lucia. However, I got to pack my bag with lots of wedding magazines and we enjoyed kicking off the planning process from our sun loungers with cocktails instead,” says Holly.

TREASURED MEMORIES Having a church ceremony was important to Holly and Thanasis, and All Saints Church and Fulham Palace provided the perfect location next to the River Thames. “It’s rare to find a location in London where the church is next to the venue, and where there’s so much beautiful greenspace so it really hit the mark,” Holly recalls. “The church service was beautiful, and the choir provided gorgeous moments to really pause and take it all in,” she says. “Walking up the aisle with my dad will be a memory I treasure forever and thinking back to the moment I saw Thanasis stood with his brothers at the alter always makes me smile,” she adds. Two of the duo’s great friends agreed to do speeches, each reading ‘Song of Solomon (2.10-13, 8.6-7)’ and ‘The Art of Marriage’ by W. A Peterson. “They were brilliant, and we were so happy that they played such an important role in our day,” Holly says.

LOOKING THE PART Holly wore an Alma Novia, style Turiol gown that she altered to include an organza insert for the cut out back with button detail for the ceremony. This was then removed for the reception. The satin buttons continued to run the full length of the train and she accessorised with a cathedral-length crystal embellished veil that sparkled in the sunshine. She wore a crystal hair pin, diamond stud earrings and a diamond bracelet which were a gift from her father. “I also wore Manolo Blahnik Hangisi shoes in blue, which I’d wanted for years and always longed to have as my ‘something blue’ on the big day.” Thanasis and his groomsmen wore matching navy suits with pastel Hermes ties and their bridesmaid looked gorgeous in a eucalyptus green full-length dress with a satin bow tied at the back and a small puddle train.

SIMPLE ELEGANCE “Our venue was a lovely marquee overlooking a path that was overflowing with giant hydrangea blooms, so we kept the décor clean and elegant,” Holly says. Green, white and blush floral centrepieces mirrored the flowers from the church, a hanging ivy wall framed the top table and stunning blossom trees were placed around the courtyard for the drinks reception and in the marquee. The table plan and place card designs were elegant and simple and continued the floral theme and the marquee sparkled with fairy lights strung from the canape. “For the 37

TOP TIP: You can never order too much Champagne! We thought we’d rather massively over ordered and would have plenty surplus, but turns out we have thirsty friends who polished off every drop by the end of the night.

evening reception we had more lighting outside where guests were relaxing and added extra gravitas with uplighting in the hallways, the back of the building and in the main reception hall where the band were playing,” Holly explains.

SWEET TOOTH “Our cake was delicious! We had three tiers of different flavours that included lemon drizzle, Victoria sponge and salted caramel and all of them were utterly divine,” says Holly. “We kept the top tier for ourselves to enjoy the following week whilst our guests demolished the rest of the cake in quick fashion,” she adds. The design was clean, elegant and simple. It was dressed in brilliant white icing with an iced ribbon bow that draped down the cake and finished with iridescent pearls dotted around each tier. “It was just a joy to look at and eat!” As if that wasn’t enough, guests were treated to raspberry and pistachio meringue kisses to take away as a memento of the day.

LET’S DANCE Holly and Thanasis spent time in the months ahead of the big day curating the music that played in the courtyard for guests during the reception. “It was a selection of acoustic jazz covers of recognisable songs. We’ve listened to it a few times since, which is a nice keepsake,” she says. For the evening reception a band called ‘the Real Kudu’ had everyone up and moving. “As a surprise Thanasis’ parents and close friends boldly took to the dance floor for a traditional Greek dance, which was a delight for everyone,” Holly remembers. “Our first dance was also a very memorable moment. We both have two left feet, so the thought of dancing in front of everyone didn’t thrill us, but it was actually very special. Much to the dismay of some family we didn’t take any lessons in advance and essentially were winging it,” she says. “We danced to Elvis Presley’s ‘Can’t help falling in love’, which when surrounded by friends and family was a great feeling.”

bbie and Kurt attended the same college in the USA for their undergraduate studies so their paths were destined to cross. “We had a mutual friend, who knew I had a crush on Kurt!” says Abbie. They eventually met at a formal college event. “We spent the evening getting to know each other. We instantly felt a connection and the formation of our friendship and love story began to flourish,” Abbie recalls. They went on to study abroad. “I was in Florence and Kurt was in Vienna, so we spent weekends visiting each other in different European countries because we couldn’t be away from each other,” she adds. Upon graduating they moved from the States to London, and both got jobs in sales for technology companies. Kurt pulled out all the stops when it came to planning the proposal. “I was in Dubai for a work trip and a colleague and friend of mine had scheduled a work dinner for us the following evening,” remembers Abbie. “When the car came to pick me up, Kurt just walked out of my hotel and got into my car. I was in utter shock. I

couldn’t believe he was in Dubai. He’d flown overnight from London so that I wouldn’t question where he was.” He’d planned the whole evening to perfection. They were driven to the Al Maha Resort in the desert. “It was a quiet, romantic hotel with gazelles and camels meandering about. We had a drink overlooking the desert and Kurt then surprised me with yet another adventure,” she says. They were escorted into a truck and taken to a romantic spot where Kurt and the hotel had organised a private evening dinner in the desert sand with a Middle Eastern dinner display surrounded by tiki torches. “At that point, I had an idea that something must be going on. Kurt was smiling from ear to ear and his excitement was so cute,” says Abbie. Kurt got down on one knee, read a letter that he’d written, and proposed. “It was the most special evening as we enjoyed this gorgeous, romantic dinner under the desert stars as fiancés.” Here, Abbie tells us more about their day… 43

I wore the Mayfair dress by Kate Halfpenny, London. I wanted a combination of sexy but elegant and it was beautiful. Halfpenny customised the matching veil to give it a longer look. I felt like a real princess.

I wore Balenciaga gold sparkly heels that were so comfortable and stunning. I can wear them for so many other occasions too which I adore.

Kurt wore a Cameron Khan tux. His custom silk jacket had our initials monogrammed on the inside and he accessorised with a large evening bow tie and black velvet Massimo Matteo dress shoes.

Our bridesmaids wore a stunning gold gown from Club L London. It fit perfectly with all different body types, was affordable, comfortable, and fit the look of the venue and church seamlessly. 44

The groomsmen wore the Calvin Klein black shawl lapel tux with the large bow tie to match Kurt. They looked really handsome and it fit so nicely. My mother was my maid of honour, she wore a Alberta Ferretti gold gown that complemented our colour scheme.

REAL WEDDINGS

We decided to get married in London so our guests could experience our favourite city. Farm Street Church in Mayfair and The Banqueting House, which is part of the Historic Royal Palaces were beyond spectacular.

We had long greenery trailing the middle of the long tables with some gold candelabras giving the table some height.

Our stationery team generated a logo for us with a cursive A&K, which we then utilised for the cake. The place names, invitations and save the dates all followed the same theme. We used the venue’s under croft for a wine and charcuterie cocktail hour in between the church and reception for our guests to enjoy, while we took photos around London.

We loved the elegance of the long table look in the main hall. We took inspiration for this from Harry Potter.

The Banqueting House has a mix of history, royalty and elegance all wrapped in one. The ceiling detail is just magnificent. Our cake was a four-tier gold and white design that emulated the theme of the wedding. The flavours were chocolate and lemon!

For the table plan, we sketched our guest’s names onto a mirror that we own.

Our bridal bouquets were white tulips. We kept our flowers simple and elegant with a green and white theme. 45

To bring guests from the church to the venue, we had two red London double decker buses. Our American guests loved the British touch!

Kurt and I love the food markets that run throughout Europe, so that inspired our catering. We had food stations that guests could help themselves to including Thai, Italian, burgers, steak and late night pizza.

My dad, mother, and I arrived at the church in a Rolls Royce Ghost and Kurt and I then travelled in the Rolls Royce to our photo spots across London!

Seeing all of our American family and friends who made such efforts to be in London on our special day, taking so many covid precautions, made things so special for us. It was surreal.

We had the singer, Leon Garner and his five-piece jazz band perform during the wedding drinks and dinner and All The Feels Collective then kicked off the party with their saxophonist, electric violinist and DJ. It was absolutely unbelievable.

Kurt’s grandfather, his best man, gave such an emotional speech. It meant so much to him to have him there as well as speaking such beautiful words in front of our friends and family.

Your wedding day flies by but take a second to stand with your partner and watch what’s going on around you. Take a mental picture of that moment to cherish forever. Be present and enjoy!

ahama Burke of London’s Mockingbird and Magnolia Flowers got together with a team of local suppliers to create this fine-art styled shoot. “The inspiration was the stunning French Renaissance period backdrop with relaxed styling and bridal wear and the idea was to showcase two different looks in the same setting,” Nahama explains. “As the floral designer, my idea was to give an insight into how effective on-trend, simple florals can be and how they can easily change the look and feel of any venue,” she adds. One style showcased beautiful neutrals whilst the other demonstrated a more dramatic luxurious look with red tones. “Both looks incorporated classic bridal style and showcased what can be achieved in a city styled wedding in the heart of London,” says Nahama. The shoot took place at Brixton’s Lambeth Town Hall, which was decorated using asymmetric floral domes and small bud vases with simple red stems for the second look. The circular hall, with its marble floors, high ceilings and ornate features were captured perfectly and created the ideal luxurious backdrop. 49

It was a very cold, wet day so we were making the most of this sheltered spot before heading to the reception. People were sheltering behind us and ooh’d and aah’d as the veil took flight while the bride and groom were oblivious to the magic being created above them.

▲ The steps at The Painted Hall are a favourite of mine. From the amazing backdrop and floral styling to the bride’s dramatic veil, this image is jaw droppingly beautiful. We love a long veil and this one will go down as the longest we’ve photographed. With a venue like this, you can certainly pull it off. 53

▲ The beaming pair in the back of the convertible, complete with picnic hamper, racing past encapsulates the energy and relaxed nature of their day. As an added bonus, the word ‘keep’ under the car acts as a charming metaphor. It’s an image to treasure, but also a sign that the newlyweds will endeavour for their love to remain as strong as it was that day. After a few drinks, the groomsmen were playing around with some flares behind the bride and groom, which quickly evolved into running around in circles past the couple. I asked the bride and groom to stop, positioned the groomsmen behind them and requested that they hoist the flares up high and suddenly we had a backlight filled with a smokey hue and ethereal glow.

To prevent their outfits from being seen and from getting dirty, the groom donned a boiler suit and the bride hid her dress with a cloak and veil. While she was seated in the carriage, she paused and glanced out of the window. This photo captures a moment of reflection and the excitement and anticipation of what was about to come. This is one or my all-time favourite photos! I was tucked away in the corner when I noticed a pigeon fly into the room. I got up from my table and positioned myself in front of the top table. I like to capture the unexpected and this photo’s done very well in various photo competitions.

▲ This was taken on a very wet day. I converted the image to black and white and kept the red umbrella. When the bride got into the reception area all the guests from the previous wedding cheered and clapped. 54

▲ This is a standout image for me because it was one of my first same-sex weddings. They had their ceremony at Islington Town Hall and the reception in a local restaurant. The couple recommended me to some of their friends and I went on to photograph their wedding too.

▲ This couple were amazing they had a love and appreciation for photography as an art form. What you can’t see behind me, are half a dozen tourists who shared our pod on the London Eye and were very accommodating.

▲ I always want to give my couples something amazing. We shot this image at midnight when all the guests had left and the bride was more relaxed. There’s actually a carpark behind the pond, so it goes to show, you can shoot iconic bride and groom portraits in the most ordinary locations and make it look special.

The groom in this image was very shy. When we visited the venue, I saw this location and knew instantly the type of image I wanted to shoot. The problem was, we planned this shot as a sneak out between the main course and desert and the guests could watch on from their elevated position in the venue. It took a bit of convincing, but the groom finally agreed to it and we’re now good friends. 55

can’t believe that in just a few months time I’ll officially become Mrs Cullen – eek! Dave and I have been engaged since Christmas Day 2020 and are due to get married this July. With all of the uncertantity surrounding COVID-19 restrictions, it’s been quite a stressful journey. However, now that the date is drawing closer I’m finally starting to feel excited. In this issue, read all about my experience going shopping for the bridesmaids’ dresses.

a Monday when it was quieter and I’m so glad we did! The consultant was absolutely lovely and couldn’t do enough for us. She made Kelly feel amazing and we didn’t feel pressured at all. With no time constraint, Kelly was able to try on every dress that caught her eye – it was a struggle to choose just one, she looked and felt stunning in them all. She eventually chose the same dress as Olivia, and in my humble (non-biased) opinion, they all look fabulous and I can’t wait to walk down the aisle with my beautiful friends. Overall, shopping together was a nice experience and it was great spending time with the girls, but I’d definitely recommend that fellow brides-to-be start shopping for dresses sooner rather than later – particularly if you have got quite a few bridesmaids! I also can’t stress enough to avoid popular visiting times at your chosen boutiques. It will create a completely different experience and ensured everyone feels relaxed and can enjoy it. Choosing who I wanted to be my bridesmaids was one of the easiest decisions I had to make. My sister-in-law, Nolwenn, has been part of the family for a few years now and I really wanted to involve her in our day, so I was pleased when she wanted to be one of my bridesmaids! I also asked my two best friends and fellow County Wedding Magazines editors, Kelly and Olivia, who were over the moon when I asked them (virtually) during one of the many lockdowns. With the easy bit done, we were on to the task of choosing their bridesmaids’ dresses. With conflicting schedules and unpredictable restrictions it was hard to decide on a date that worked for everyone but we were eventually able to book an appointment for the beginning of December 2021. Shopping for their outfits was one of the things I was most excited about when we got

engaged. I love all the girls dearly and really wanted them to feel special and a part of our big day, so making sure that they were comfortable was my number one priority. I wanted them to choose their own style and the only thing I asked was that all the dresses were sage green, which worked out perfectly as the girls all love that colour – it was meant to be! We booked a Saturday appointment and oh my gosh it was busy! The girls had to share a changing room and only managed to try on a handful of dresses before our time was up. What shocked us all was just how long the dresses take to come into the store. Starting our shopping eight months early we all thought we’d have plenty of time to shop around, but we found that all of the gowns wouldn’t be in the store until early May 2022, which would only leave us with two months for alterations – this of course, sent my stress levels through the roof! Despite all of the craziness and the insane amount of people in the boutique, Olivia and Nolwenn both managed to find their dresses on that first visit; Nolwenn opted for a sleeveless A-line gown and Olivia chose a similar style but with floaty off-the-shoulder straps. Kelly and I both felt overwhelmed by the first appointment, and sadly she came away empty handed, so we decided to go back on

❤ Make sure a registrar or celebrant is available on your wedding day before confirming with the venue. ❤ Find out what is and what isn’t included in the booking price. ❤ Check whether your venue has any sound limiters or a curfew in place. ❤ Ensure the venue has liability insurance in case the worst was to happen. ❤ How will the venue handle poor weather or last-minute changes? ❤ Before booking, check the venue’s COVID-19 policies.

❤ If like me, you’re nervous or unsure in front of the camera book a prewedding shoot – it really does make a difference. ❤ Before booking, decide on what style of photography you like and set a budget. ❤ Lots of photographers don’t have prices stated on their website; find five you like and email them all asking for quotes so that you can compare. ❤ Find out how many images you’ll be receiving and how long your photographer will spend with you on the day. ❤ Most suppliers will require a meal, so factor that into your catering budget and check if they have any dietary requirements. ❤ You’ll be spending a large portion of the day with your photographer, so it’s important you get on well, and they make you feel relaxed.

FLOWERS ❤ Some flowers are seasonal and may not be available at the time of year you’re getting married, so be prepared to discuss this with your florist. ❤ Your supplier will have a wealth of knowledge and will be able to advise you on what blooms will suit your day. ❤ Check your quotes include VAT. ❤ Think carefully about if you’d like real or dried flowers. If you’re unsure it may be worth talking to a few different companies to discuss the pros and cons. ❤ Your florist should suggest ways you can save money, for example, re-using blooms from your ceremony for the reception. ❤ There are so many ways that you can preserve your flowers after the wedding, so it’s worth looking at your options.

WEDDING DRESS ❤ Try on a variety of styles to find what best suits your shape. ❤ Trust your bridal consultant and listen to their recommendations, after all, they’re the experts. ❤ Choose a dress that you feel comfortable in and makes you feel like the best version of yourself. ❤ Wear white or skin-coloured underwear to your appointment. ❤ Start shopping nine to 12 months before the wedding to ensure you have plenty of time to get the gown in-store and alterations to be done. ❤ The shopping process can be daunting, so don’t feel pressured to purchase a dress for the sake of it, when you find the right gown, you’ll know it. 57

LUSCIOUS LOCKS My dark hair feels quite dull. What can I do to add some depth and different tones to create the wow-factor look? I’d suggest adding a subtle face frame of highlights, no more than two shades lighter than your natural hair colour. A professional stylist will know which shades are going to match your natural colour for a soft look that doesn’t feel too far away from your original hair colour. If you decide to style your hair down, this will look gorgeous with a natural wave as it will accentuate the colour. Our nuptials are quite relaxed so I don’t want to wear a traditional veil but I love the thought of wearing a bridal hat or headpiece. Can you share your advice and favourite styles? It’s always so special making hats and headpieces for a bride, and there are many options if you’d rather not wear a traditional veil. A favourite of ours is a small pillbox with a neat birdcage millinery veil, worn on the back of the head with a little bit of veiling over your eyes. It has a bridal feel but in a less traditional way and works beautifully with a contemporary wedding dress or suit and is timelessly chic. Silk or flower covered hairbands are also popular. These can be made in all shapes and sizes, so designs can be dramatic or more discreet, and can also have a millinery veil pinned to them that can be removed after the ceremony so the band can be worn for the rest of the day. We recently really enjoyed making a stunning bespoke sparkly 1920’s style headdress using vintage costume jewellery and pearl buttons found by the bride. The finished piece was totally one-off and a real expression of the bride’s personality and style. I’d always recommend finding your dress first and then visiting a milliner to discuss with them what hat or headpiece would work. We think about the style, time of year, materials, face shape and of course, personality. Gourmet lovers paradise in the Algarve… W

ESTAMINE Possibly the Algarve’s best kept secret – an incredible restaurant located on Isla Deserta, only accessible by boat. Few places come close to this family-run gem, where you can enjoy fresh fish and seafood along with other Algarvian specialities on your very own deserted island with 360 degree ocean views. When seen from above, the restaurant itself takes the shape of a crab among the sand dunes, an architectural tribute to their neighbours scuttling along the shoreline. DOS PASSOS Another beachside delight located on Ancão Beach in the Ria Formosa Natural Park and boasts uninterrupted sea views with the dunes as a backdrop.
