H

ello, my name is Claire and I’m addicted to looking at reader weddings. And nope, it’s not those group or couples’ shots I’m yearning for, as gorgeous and glorious as they may well be. In fact, it’s those ‘caught-in-the-moment’ snaps I particularly love, where you or your guest have been papped without even realising. The moment a real wedding gallery pings in my inbox I’m on it, poring through the evening reception photos for the perfect shots that capture your big day to perfection. By this time those nerve-wracking speeches have been spoken, and the drinks have been flowing, with everyone properly letting their hair down for the first time that day. The result? Some cracking wedding pictures. Groom deciding his tie is better suited around his head than his neck? Check. Female guests’ skyscraper heels abandoned for some serious moves on the dance floor? Check. I can go on and on… With my guilty confession in mind, it goes without saying that this issue has a host of amazing wedding photography for you to savour. We’ve 12 pages of stunning reader weddings to enjoy, starting on p27, and two exclusive local shoots for you to be inspired by, shot on location at Northumberland’s Lough House Farm (p45), and Newcastle’s The Willows at The Woodmans (p78). Then there’s our line-up of some of the North East’s top photographers over on page 48 – if their images don’t whet your wedding appetite, nothing will! Also this issue, we’ve been busy scouring the region for the very best venues to say ‘I do’ to, from sensational Sunderland (p15), to rustic locations perfect for a boho festival vibe (p21). All that plus incredible honeymoons, grooms’ news, fashion, beauty, venue styling and more. Happy wedding planning – see you in September!

SECOND TIME LUCKY You’ll be hard pushed to find someone not feeling the pinch right now thanks to the UK’s cost of living crisis. That’s why we were pleased to hear about Darlington’s Something Old, Something New Sustainable Bridal Wear, who’ve launched their business as a way of helping brides-to-be find their dream dress at a fraction of the price. The family-run venture was borne from a wedding dress shopping trip of their own last year. “We were taken aback by the price of gowns, plus the knowledge of how much time and work goes into something that’s worn once,” says co-owner, Emma Atkinson. “We then looked at dresses for sale on social media and resale sites, and thought how brave someone would have to be to buy a dress they hadn’t even tried on!” Based in Darlington town centre, the store offers a huge variety of clean – and many unworn – bridal gowns, ranging from size eight to 30, but at half the original price. “We offer brides the same wedding dress shopping experience they’d get in a typical boutique,” continues Emma. “The appointments are relaxed and personal, and we’ve many designer names, such as Stella York, Morilee, Phoenix Gowns and Ronald Joyce. Our dresses start from £90, and our clients can even choose a budget plan that has 0% interest.” For more info head over to www.somethingoldsomethingnewsustainablebridalwear.com.

Found the perfect venue but discovered it doesn’t offer drinks as part of the deal? Yarm-based Vansecco can supply all of your alcoholic – and non-alcoholic – needs. “We supply reception drink and bar facilities in an Italian Piaggio van,” says owner Lizzy Wilson. “Great for outdoors and equally good inside, too, you can choose from a whole host of beverages to suit all tastes. We’ve our ever-popular strawberry and rhubarb gin fizz cocktails; there’s premium Italian lager on tap, or why not offer friends and family the chance to sip a regionally-produced craft G&T? We of course cater for non-drinkers, and even have options for vegan and gluten-free guests.” For more info and how to book visit www.vansecco.co.uk.

GREAT AXEPECTATIONS

Burying the hatchet at your wedding usually means smoothing over a silly squabble you once had with that cousin you rarely see. That’s no longer the case, as you can now throw a real-life axe at your hen party, stag do or reception thanks to Newton Ayecliffe’s Valhalla North! The UK’s number one independent axe throwing company, owned by husband and wife team Carl and Kat, has just launched its very own Valkyrie mobile axe throwing trailer, which is available for bookings from summer 2022 and beyond. “We offer axe throwing for ages eight years and above, priding ourselves on being as knowledgeable about the sport as you can be,” says Kat. “The Valkyrie mobile trailer was designed and constructed by Carl himself, and is the only one of its kind in the North East. We have also just received delivery of our Valhalla Viking ship fire pit, which can also be hired for your wedding. Fully insured, and with an instructor on hand, our trailer provides a safe and fun experience you’ll never forget!” Valhalla North’s mobile axe throwing starts from £400 – for more information visit www.valhallanorth.co.uk.

QUENCH YOUR THIRST Fancy combining a love of ale with a date night away from wedding planning? Book in for a stay at INNSiDE by Meliá Newcastle – and get set to enjoy the venue’s new INNSiDE IPA! To coincide with the hotel celebrating their first anniversary back in May, INNSiDE collaborated with Newcastle’s Brinkburn Brewery to launch their very own, local IPA. The Bosk is a modern yet rustic new build, cladded with scorched larch and with a full glass gable end, showcasing the fantastic views of the rolling Cheviot Hills and evening sunsets. Surrounded by the tranquil Breamish Valley, The Bosk offers a peaceful and relaxing area to celebrate privately and exclusively with friends and family. With big cosy chairs and rustic yet elegant interiors, The Bosk also boasts stunning architecture and handmade features such as chandeliers and a bar which was inspired by the venue owner’s wedding. Located alongside 11 luxury self-catering holiday cottages,

THE HIDDEN OAK

07984 540007 | www.thehiddenoak.co.uk This stunning North Yorkshire barn is set in over 200 acres, meaning the venue enjoys an exclusive rural setting whilst still being in reach of local amenities. The Hidden Oak strives itself on not being a typical wedding venue, where packages are the only option. Instead, they let each couple create and build their own bespoke day from start to finish, offering additional outdoor arrangements such as tipis, marquees or entertainment.

The barn itself is surrounded by perfectly maintained gardens including a pond and extensive woodland, providing a picturesque backdrop for wedding photographs. The spacious lawned area and courtyard is also ideal for guests to mingle and enjoy a refreshing drink. There are two options for ceremonies, the first of which is the main barn area for up to 100, looking out onto the pond area and maintained grass and borders. Alternatively, wed outside in front of the building, where an oak pagoda is soon to be completed where the ceremonies will take place. An advantage to this option is its ample space – so there’s no real cap on capacity! 25

ate and Oliver met at the University of Leeds in 2010. “We both studied law at undergraduate, and by 2011 were in the same friendship group, ending up living next door to one another in our final year,” says Kate. “Oliver agreed to be my partner for the law society debating competition, which drew us closer, and by the time we reached our end of year exam trip to Newquay we’d decided to try and ‘make a go of it’.” Eight years later, the couple went for a picnic to Bamburgh beach. “It was a hot sunny day, so I couldn’t understand why Oliver was irritated at the sands being so crowded,” continues the bride. “When he finally found a nice secluded spot and proposed, it became crystal clear why he’d kept checking and re-checking his bag for his water bottle!” The couple set the date for the 18th September, 2021, marrying at Tynemouth’s Church of the Holy Saviour before hosting a reception at Tynemouth Cricket Club. Here, Kate tells us more about their big day…

We wanted a marquee weddin g and the cricket club setting really allowed us to make it our own. We chose fres h foliage twined into the ceiling of the marquee, with lots more greenery inside.

We got married in the church where I was christened, and just up the road from the house where my parents still live! Our reception was then held on the cricket pitch at Tynemouth Cricket Club, where my Dad played the sport – and subsequently coached.

Our florist was incredible, creating bouquets of foliage with white roses, eucalyptus and white freesia. Oliver, his dad and my dad wore buttonholes of white freesia, rosemary and mint, with the rest of the groomsmen wearing a mix of foliage, rosemary and mint.

28

We opted for a four-tier cake made of white chocolate and blueberry sponge, double chocolate sponge, lemon and elderflower sponge and carrot cake flavours.

I ordered my Justin Alexander dress from Mia Sposa Bridal, which was a wonderful experience. I chose the style because it was classic, but also had an element of fun. I wanted a long train with a good-sized skirt so I could swoosh around the marquee – which I absolutely did!

REAL WEDDINGS

My bridesmaids looked beautiful in their sea-g lass floor-length dresses by Sorella Vita, which we bought from Accent Original Bridal in Newcastle.

Oliver wore a navy three-piece suit from Reiss, with dark brown shoes and blush pink knitted tie. We asked his groomsmen to wear navy suits and black shoes, but with the same colour ties to match.

With all of the emotion in the run up to the big day, the speeches were incredible and such a big part of the day for us both, and also the guests.

Barney, our ginger brown miniature goldendood le, came to see us outside the church for photos. He wore a polka dot sea-g lass bow-tie to match the bridesmaids – and looked very dapper!

Oli’s a keen gardener, so our favours were gin liqueurs made from his dad’s gooseberries, plus a mix of Oli’s homegrown rhubarb. The gin certainly helped liven up the vocal chords in the evening!

Northumbrian Classic Cars supplied us with a beautiful cream Jaguar. It was a nod to Oli’s Grandp a, Bob, who loved his Jag and would have been so thrilled to see us get mar ried. 29

We wanted the day to be about laughter and friendship, so our food reflected this, with big sharing platters of salads, meat and fish. My mother-in-law, Jane, also made over 300 brownies for dessert which were delicious!

We had a memory table for those no longer with us, including my best friend Harriet, who would have been my maid-of-honour. Heaven gained an angel when we lost Hatti to breast cancer. She was definitely with us in spirit, bringing sunshine and light and leading us onto the dance floor.

We booked an acoustic singer and guitarist for entertainment, and the dance floor was constantly packed until gone midnight.

A few weeks before the wedding my dad said he’d been listening to a string quartet on the radio and that it had really moved him. He asked us to find one for the wedding, and we’re so glad we did!

Take a moment together to stand and watch what’s going on around you. All of the people who you love (and who love you) are in one place together – it’s simply wonderful.

REAL WEDDINGS

S

helby and Chris met through a mutual friend, when Chris was serving in the armed forces back in 2017. “It was an instant attraction,” remembers Shelby. “We both knew straight away that we were soulmates. I messaged Chris via Facebook and the rest was history! One of the main things that attracted me to Chris was how amazing he was with his daughter, Esme, as I always knew children were in my future. Within a year we had our own home, and I’d fallen pregnant with our little girl, Romee. Chris decided to leave the army when he found out I was excepting, which is something I’ll be forever grateful for, as the army was all he’d ever known.” Chris proposed in November 2018 at Whinstone View during a romantic weekend away. “I was pregnant at the time so wasn’t drinking, but Chris was knocking them back, which was really out of character,” continues the bride. “I was very confused as he doesn’t usually drink – if anything, he was beginning to annoy me! We sat down to watch a film when he suddenly produced a bag full of wooden hearts listing the 10 reasons why he loved me. I got to the end and realised I’d only looked at nine, with Chris getting down on one knee with the final heart in his hand that read, ‘Will You Marry Me?’. It was the most amazing moment that I’ll never forget.” The couple set the date for the 9 April 2022, choosing South Causey Inn for their big day. Here, Shelby tells us more about their amazing wedding…

A DAY TO REMEMBER Shelby and Chris started planning their wedding soon after their engagement, looking around a few venues before deciding on South Causey Inn. “We both wanted a boho-style day, and the décor inside The Old Barn was perfect, with hanging flowers, foliage and wooden beams. We decided to opt for the venue’s Platinum Package, which included lots of extras, such as venue styling, welcome drink and canapés, a four-course wedding breakfast with wine, DJ, evening buffet and even an overnight stay in the deluxe honeymoon suite.” With a boho wedding in mind, the couple set about planning how they wanted the venue to look on the actual day. “We were lucky that South Causey Inn’s package included centrepieces for the tables, choosing pampas displays which looked incredible,” says the bride. “As for flowers, I was always desperate to have a waterfall bouquet, wanting one ever since I saw a picture on Pinterest! I chose a smaller version of my bouquet for the bridesmaids; our flower girls wore gypsophila headbands with ribbons on the back; and we kept the buttonholes nice and simple, with a rose tied with eucalyptus.” When dressing the tables, it was also important for the couple to highlight Chris having served 14 years in the army. “I know from previous celebrations that favours are usually lost or forgotten about,” continues Shelby. “We therefore chose to donate to the SSAFA – The Armed Forces Charity – instead of gifting guests actual favours. We placed handmade cards on the tables, designed in the same theme as our invites and other wedding stationery, to tell our guests our reasons for donating.”

ALL DRESSED UP Shelby found her dream dress at Corbridge-based The Wedding Dress Company. “As soon as I put on the Lauren Martina Liana design it made me feel like a Princess, so I knew it was the one for me!” says the bride. “I wanted a fitted dress with a large train and detail, which was everything this style had. I also purchased a beautiful hair vine which matched my dress perfectly, and wore a small pair of round droplet earrings with a bracelet to match. It 33

REAL WEDDINGS was just the added extra sparkle I needed.” Chris and his groomsmen also made sure they looked the part, heading to Newcastle’s Master Debonair for their wedding outfits. “Chris wore a Marc Darcy brown tweed suit with blue waistcoat and tan tie,” says Shelby. “It really fitted in well with the theme, while the rust colour on the shoulders and elbow gave it the ‘pop’ we were after. My dad and groomsmen wore the same style, but with tan waistcoats and blue ties; while my bridesmaids all got to choose their own dresses, as long as one wore sage, one wore Champagne, one wore rust, and one chose a mauve colour.”

LET’S EAT! Great food and good drinks were an important part of the couple’s April celebrations, beginning with South Causey Inn’s wedding co-ordinator bringing in tequila shots before everyone walked down the aisle! “I must say it really calmed the nerves – I’ve never seen a happier group of ladies over a shot!” laughs Shelby. After the ceremony came reception drinks and canapés, before it was time for the guests to enjoy a delicious wedding breakfast. “We were very fortunate to be able to give all guests a choice between four starters, four main meals and four desserts, which went down a storm,” continues Shelby. “They could decide between prawn cocktail, vegetable soup, Cajun chicken strips and bruschetta, moving on to either beef, lamb, pork or chicken. The desserts were incredible, too, with Eton mess, chocolate brownie, raspberry and white chocolate cheesecake or a trio of desserts. For the evening we then opted for the world-tour buffet, which included homemade lasagne, burgers, chips, curry and much more – it was fab!” However, the food didn’t end there, as when it came to Shelby and Chris’s wedding cake it seemed not many could resist. “We chose a two-tier cake in sticky toffee and lemon flavours,” says the bride. “It was covered in white chocolate ganache and featured green and gold textured icing around the bottom. I’ve never tasted anything quite like it!”

TEARS OF JOY Every couple’s wedding day is packed with emotion, with Shelby and Chris’s certainly no exception. “I was so nervous that I was actually sick a few times before the ceremony!” remembers the bride. “I was stressed about something going wrong, but I was also worried at the thought of it all being over too soon. We’d spent so much time planning that the idea of the day coming to an end was quite sad. My parents also shed a few tears when they saw me in my dress, which was hugely emotional for me. My dad never gets upset and is usually very reserved, so seeing him break down was so special to me. Chris was just the same. I’ve never really seen him cry apart from when Romee was born. To see him sob when our daughters and I walked down the aisle was a moment I’ll always cherish.” Tears well and truly over; the tissues were binned, and it was time to get the party started. “We hired an amazing singer, Christy McAllister, who sang all of our chosen songs perfectly,” continues Shelby. “We also had a magician, Stevo, to perform during the reception – he blew everyone’s minds with his incredible tricks! We even hired a saxophonist for three 30-minute sets throughout the evening. He had every single person up dancing – literally the entire wedding party! We’ll never forget seeing our two families come together on the dance floor, getting on as if they’d been friends forever. There are no words that can even begin to describe how amazing it was.” 35

SHELBY’S TOP TIP “Always include your partner. It might be hard not to take control, but including your other half really brings you both closer. Plus, there’s no better feeling than seeing your plans come together.”

of love THE TOWER

Sarah and Brandon’s friendship blossomed into a love to last forever Images courtesy of Tyla Fairbairn Photography

S

arah and Brandon met at Tynemouth Longsands beach eight years ago. “We started off as good friends, but after three years realised there was a definite spark,” says Sarah. “From our very first date I remember thinking, ‘So this is what it’s meant to feel like’ – and we’ve never looked back! My favourite song is Romeo and Juliet by Dire Straits, and when he asked me to be his girlfriend he recited the lyrics, ‘You and me, babe, how about it?’ as his way of an official boyfriend proposal – and I was sold!” Two years later Brandon popped the question in a log cabin in Northumberland while the couple were celebrating Sarah’s birthday. “The proposal was meant to be a surprise, but two days before our trip we found out I was pregnant with our daughter, Stevie,” continues the bride. “In a panic Brandon told my Dad I was pregnant and asked his permission to marry me! He swears he’d planned this all much before he got me pregnant, though! Brandon proposed with a ring, down on one knee, along with a glass that he’d had engraved with ‘Sarah House of Malligan’, with the Stark family crest from our favourite TV show, Game of Thrones.” The couple set the date of 2nd April 2022, choosing Newcastle’s The Secret Tower as their venue. Here, Sarah tells us more about their big day… 39

I wore the Zola dress by Evie Young, which I bought from Sisters of Grace in Newcastle. The moment I put it on I fell head over heels! My mam was crying, I was speechless – and there was Stevie, crawling over the floor of the studio. It was a moment to remember!

My mam showed me The Secret Tower a few years ago, saying she knew I’d love it. I’d wanted to get married there ever since, but was nervous viewing the venue again in case Brandon didn’t like it. I cried when he said he loved it as much as me.

I loved getting ready on the morning of the wedding. Stevie just sat there, happily playing with the make-up artist’s brushes, and it was lovely having her there.

I told my florist, Becca, my visions for the flowers and the results were incredible! She exceeded my expectations, with my bouquet and arch filled with amazing toffee roses. We opted for a three-tier buttercream cake with spiced orange and cranberry, Bellini and Victoria sponge flavours. Terracotta and white in colour, it was decorated with flowers to complement my bouquet.

We chose pin badges from the Alzheimer’s Society for our wedding favours. I lost both my grandparents to the disease and wanted to honour them in some way, especially as we only lost my gorgeous grandad last year.

My sister Rosie was my maid of honour, and looked gorgeous in her sage green suit with ivory boots. She carried our daughter down the aisle, who held a sign that said ‘Daddy, here comes Mammy’. 40

REAL WEDDINGS

For our centrepieces, we had jars filled with fresh gypsophila dotted along the tables, complete with candle sticks in rust, sage and green colours and terracotta table runners.

Our reception began with my sister singing and playing the guitar. I’ll never forget dancing with my mam while she played Taylor Swift’s The Best Day – it was a beautiful moment for which I’ll be forever grateful. During the ceremony, my grandma, Brenda, was our ring bearer, which was so lovely. When Brandon originally asked her if she’d like the job, she sobbed for 20 minutes saying, ‘I’m honoured, I’m honoured!’

Brandon wore a suit from Master Debonair that looked grey or navy in different lights. He wore boots, rather than shoes, and a bow tie and braces. He accessorised it further with a Tag watch, which I gave to him the night before our wedding.

My bridesmaids bought us all matching white Crocs – my favourite footwear – with our names on! Mine said ‘Mrs’ on one foot and ‘Mally’ on the other. It was a fantastic gift and great for the evening dancing!

Tyla Fairbairn is the most amazing photographer. She is kind, clever, patient and one of the lushest girls I know. Brandon said he wouldn’t have ever wanted anyone else to take photos of him – even though she made him pose on his own! 41

I loved our welcome board, which had the Foo Fighters’ lyrics, ‘Hello, I’ve waited here for you Everlong’ printed on it. I knew the second Brandon saw it when he arrived at the venue that I’d chosen those lyrics just for him.

I travelled to the venue with my dad in a Mercedes. That was one of my favourite moments; sitting in the back talking about our lives, and how my grandad had given him a cigar 20 years ago for him to smoke on my wedding day – and that he had it in his pocket.

Our friends said that the best part of our day was seeing how happy Brandon and I were together. If your friends and family love and support you, all that should matter to them is you and your partner. THE VENUE Dawn Marie, coordinator for Lough House Farm, says, “Launched just prior to lockdown, we decided a beautiful shoot followed by an open evening would be a great way to renew interest in our exclusive-use venue. Lough is a stunning venue – think of it as a rustic, blank canvas for you to create a perfect barn wedding from 50 to 150 guests. Exposed brick, feature beams, a quirky ‘pig-sty’, wooden bar and side room made it the perfect choice for a celebration.” THE STYLING “For this shoot we decided to opt for a blue and white theme,” says Jane. “Fresh spring flowers, French calligraphy table runners and delicate white crockery worked in perfect harmony. Florist Moira used local flowers in season to create some stunning pieces, while calligrapher Abbi worked her magic on the table runners, with poems written in French and English. The use of vintage gold in the form of lanterns and table number frames helped to bring an element of elegance, along with soft white chiffon centres and powder blue napkins tied with silk ribbons.”

Who David West Photography Prices From £1,995 Contact www.davidwestphotography.co.uk Why me? “I used to be an art director for a computer games company which involved photography,” says David. “While I loved the creativity, I wasn’t keen on the confines of the office, with wedding photography allowing me the creativity and opportunity to travel. My style is documentary and cinematic; influenced by movies and film. Simply put, I photograph moments as they happen while using composition and lighting to create an artistic story. I always try to be unique and not formulaic; approaching every wedding as if it were my first. I give 100% every time – and I hope my work speaks for itself.” 48

Who Duncan McCall Photography Prices £900 to £2,000 https://duncanmccallphotography.com Contact https://duncanmccallphotography.com Why me? “I was a graphic designer for years before becoming a full-time wedding photographer,” says Duncan. “I had the chance to photograph a friend’s big day over 10 years ago – and haven’t looked back since! Describing my style as creative documentary, with a few epic portraits taken in a relaxed way, I love looking for fleeting moments of emotion and laughter. If you’re looking for documentary-focused photography with some epic creative portraits then I’m the man for you – my couples always comment on how amazed they were to see the moments I’ve caught, and the wow factor of their portraits.” Who Ruth & Ben Prices £1,200 to £2,000 Contact www.ruthandben.co.uk Why us? “Becoming a wedding photographer was a happy accident!” says Ruth. “I was addicted to taking photos for as long as I can remember, then one day I accompanied Ben to a wedding – who was playing in the band – and something clicked! Initially launching as a solo project, I now shoot alongside Ben, who mainly fills the role of chief videographer. Since then, our style has developed into a combination of the best bits of editorial and documentary, meaning we spend most of the day capturing the action as it plays out, but also spending time curating beautiful pictures of our couples.”

Who Fusco Media Prices £250 to £2,000 Contact www.fuscomedia.co.uk Why us? “We’ve been in the industry for over 14 years, the last six as husband and wife,” says Fusco’s Rara and Keith. “We pride ourselves on being fly-on-the-wall in terms of style, documenting the whole day from many angles while showing you the things you may not have seen or witnessed. We are very unique and try to be as flexible as we can to allow you to forget we’re even there on your day! One of the key things we hear in feedback and reviews is the fact that we don’t offer a ‘one size fits all’ approach – quite simply, we will always endeavour to get the shots you’ll treasure for a lifetime.” www.fuscomedia.co.uk

Describing my style as relaxed and candid, I feel this gives the best representation of the day as it happens. I’ll always get to know couples before their big day, and find having a consultation and doing a pre-wedding shoot helps me get a feel for how they are in front of the camera. What’s more, it helps me tailor my style to them and what they’re comfortable with, rather than the other way around.”

Who Ritchie Coatsworth Photography Prices £399 to £1,299 Contact www.rcphoto.co.uk Why me? “After initially starting my career as a graphic designer I got asked to photograph a wedding – and the rest is history,” explains Ritchie. “I hold a degree in Illustration & Design and a foundation degree in Applied Photography, becoming a full-time photographer in 2016. My style is predominantly photojournalistic, capturing moments as they happen naturally throughout the day and building a story. I find that taking this unobtrusive approach helps me capture unrepeatable, impromptu and authentic moments – moments you may not have known had happened until you see the finished photographs.” 50

From Miss to Mrs County Wedding Magazines’ senior editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey t’s finally here, my last bride’s diary entry before I become a married woman! When we first got engaged nearly 18 months ago, the wedding seemed so far away that it almost didn’t feel real, and yet here we are about to walk down the aisle. The last few weeks of planning have been a bit manic with all of our suppliers getting in touch asking for lastminute details, and although it can feel a little overwhelming, it’s also really exciting! This issue is all about my dress alterations, hair and make-up trial and keeping positive as the big day approaches...

FITS LIKE A GLOVE I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t incredibly nervous for my first dress fitting. I purchased my gown over a year ago, and I’ve gone through phases during that time where I’ve loved it and also doubted it. It was a size too big when I bought it, so looking back at the pictures it was hard to imagine what it would look like fitting properly. I think my main worry was ‘what if it doesn’t look like I imagined or even worse, what if the seamstress makes it too small or too short!?’ As someone who likes to micromanage everything, this situation was certainly out of my comfort zone. I took two of my bridesmaids with me for my first appointment for moral support, and the seamstress, Danielle, was wonderful. She made us feel really at ease and like nothing was too much trouble. She knew right away how to alter my dress and was able to do it within a quick timeframe. I left the appointment feeling much calmer but also a little apprehensive about how the dress would eventually turn out. Fast forward a month, it was time for my second fitting and for the bridesmaids’ dresses to be altered. After a morning of panicking and worrying, I can’t put into words how relieved I felt when I tried on my dress and it fit like a glove. It still needed a few tweaks here and there, but overall I felt much happier as I was no longer drowning in a sea of fabric and worrying that my boobs might fall out at a moment’s notice! Danielle was also very reassuring to the bridesmaids who were worried about parts of their dresses and, within a week, we had all three back looking perfect. Having had several meltdowns over this, my advice to any nearlyweds-to-be is to try not to panic and trust your suppliers. As long as they have good reviews and are confident in their capabilities, then leave it to them – they’re the experts after all! 52

FACING FACTS As someone who has only worn make-up once for prom night many years ago, I was unsure of what I wanted when it came to my bridal make-up. Make-up is not my forte and, much to my friends’ amusement, I can’t tell you the difference between highlighter, foundation and concealer – and that’s just for starters! For this reason, I chose a hair stylist and make-up artist with great reviews, who are familiar with my venue and whole-heartedly put my trust in them. During my trial, she sat me down and asked what I wanted, and I was honest and said ‘no idea’. She laughed and reassured me that I’m not the only woman in the world who doesn’t wear make-up (even though it feels like it sometimes). She went for a very natural look and talked me through the process. Even though my make-up looked great and was very subtle, it was still a shock to see myself with it on. It took me the whole day to get used to it, but I was really pleased with the result, and felt like a princess. When it comes to hair (you’ll be pleased to hear I’m not as clueless), I had a rough idea of what style I wanted but was torn between a half up and half down look or an up do. My hair stylist was wonderful! She created both looks for me, took loads of pictures and made sure I was happy with both styles. After a lot of deliberation I’ve decided on an up do, as my dress has dramatic front and back detailing that I didn’t want anything to detract from. I left my hair and make-up in place, like they suggested, for the whole day and it still looked wonderful by 11pm. I was really pleased with the whole experience and being dressed up made me feel so excited to finally marry my best friend. Thank you all for sticking with me throughout my wedding journey. I hope you enjoy planning your own day and everything turns out perfectly!

BRIDE’S DIARY

Hindsight is a marvellous thing www.chrisblackledgephotography.co.uk

Melissa’s hubby-to-be opens a window into the wedding planning journey from the groom’s perspective

H

ello readers, as I’m sure you’re all well aware, my beautiful Melissa has been detailing our journey from our couch-based lockdown proposal to the wedding altar, and what a journey it has been! Thankfully Melissa is the most organised person on the planet, so my involvement in this process has been minimal at best, however that being said, I’ve picked up one or two things along the way that Melissa has generously given me this space to share...

www.chrisblackledgepho

tography.co.uk

GUEST LIST Being the social beast I am, I found putting together a finalised wedding guest list quite difficult. Much to Melissa’s dismay I wanted to invite everyone I’d ever met and their postman. However, (thankfully) the capacity of our venue and overall budget (I don’t think I appreciated how expensive day guests are) put the brakes on my invite rampage and forced me to reign in my expectations somewhat. I found that I felt quite guilty about not inviting everyone I’ve ever spoken to, but you definitely do need to draw the line somewhere. My advice to anyone planning a

wedding is don’t lose any sleep over not inviting someone, chances are they probably weren’t going to invite you to their wedding anyway!

CHOOSING YOUR GROOMSMEN Thankfully this was quite an easy one for me. My best man has been my closest ally and confident for 15 years now, so there was no hesitation in my mind when asking him. My biggest concern was that having four groomsmen might be too many, but I couldn’t imagine any of them not being next to me for support, so the thought of losing one of them from the party would have been like removing oxygen. Another thing I’m grateful for is that they all get along brilliantly. I’ve heard some real horror stories about infighting between people’s bridesmaids and groomsmen, so this is definitely something to consider when selecting your party. You might love them all, but do they like each other? You’d think that people would pull together for their friend’s biggest day, but you never know.

PLANNING YOUR STAG DO I’ll be honest, I never really saw the purpose of a stag do. Admittedly in my mind, I had this warped perception of the event being a trip to a dubious location to take part in nefarious activities. I’m not a particularly good drinker, and as I creep onto the darker side of my 30s, I’m even worse at handling a hangover, so the prospect of this seemed less than appealing. Sitting down to discuss with my (similarly worldweary) best man, we came to the reassuring

realisation that a stag do can be whatever you want it to be. In my instance, I like Centre Parcs, and the thought of a trip there (and many, many barbecues) seemed like a slice of heaven, so this was a bit of a no-brainer. Ultimately my advice to any groom-to-be is don’t be afraid to book something that will make you happy. If your groomsmen deserve their place in your party, they won’t challenge your choices.

THE SPEECH This is a big one, probably the biggest responsibility of the groom. The wedding day is such a big event in a person’s life, and the speeches really stick with attendees – good or bad! My first piece of advice would be not to leave it to the last minute. It’s certainly one of those things that can be put off, but I promise it won’t be worth the anxiety! There are thousands of great speech templates online that you can use as a starting point. Once I got started, I found writing about my loved ones and the significance of the day was easy, as it’s your opportunity to be honest, and just gush about everything. You proposed for a reason and this is your chance to share it with everyone, including your bride. Write from your heart, speak from the bottom of your lungs and try not to stare at your feet the whole time! Oh, and practicing the speech once or twice before the big day probably isn’t a bad idea! Thank you for reading and good luck!

STYLE FILE

Unsure of the best way to decorate your wedding space? We asked five North East venue stylists for their essential advice www.edwardashleyphotogra phy.co.uk www.thenorthernflowergarden.co.uk

STYLE INSPO #1: RUSTIC/BARN WEDDING

“If you’re choosing to get married in a barn then I’d always suggest combining dry flowers with fresh for that rustic vibe. Working with these combinations, as well as a muted colour palette, really complements the casual, wooden interiors of this type of venue. Picture dried hop garlands peppered with fresh foliage for variety and interest, then couple this with ornate jars of fresh meadow flowers for your table centres to finish off the look. Many barn weddings also incorporate the outdoors – so why not consider an arch? You can go traditional or opt for a pyramid design, decorated with dried and fresh materials like pampas grass, bunny tails and roses. Bouquets and boutonnieres also look great in this style and with this type of bloom and foliage.” Debbie O’Neill, The Northern Flower Garden | www.thenorthernflowergarden.co.uk www.edwarda shleyphotogr aphy.co.uk www.thenor thernflowerga rden.co.uk

STYLE INSPO #2: HISTORIC/ STATELY HOME WEDDING

“My first piece of advice is to ensure your style of decoration harmonises with the architectural style of your venue – you might be surprised to discover that rustic, modern or sophisticated all work just as well in a castle or stately home. Next, consider the lighting, which will help you further in deciding what type of decorations you will need. In our experience, pristine white chair covers or lime-washed Chiavari chairs, complete with white vertical drop sashes, light up any space. Floating

candles in vases of water also add to the ambience of a grand room, with longer tables rather than round often working better in bigger venues. Large candelabras with candles are another fantastic option, choosing higher centrepieces as well to draw attention to your venue’s high ceiling.” Diane Nicholson, Neatly Seated | www.neatlyseated.co.uk

STYLE INSPO #3: ALFRESCO WEDDING

“Looking to wed outside? Make sure you think about the kind of vibe you want your whole day to be about. Many couples like their alfresco ceremony to complement the natural elements of their surroundings, setting a plan in place that welcomes and then leads your guests through each step of your day. Take full advantage of any natural props you will have at your disposal, using stone walls as easels to stand your signs against; hanging seating plans or signs from surrounding trees; or even wrapping twine around bushes for guests to peg Polaroids of the day on. Have a back-up plan or marquee or cover at the ready in case the weather takes a turn, and don’t forget about the huge importance of lighting. When the sun sets you’ll need plenty of lights draped or wrapped around trees or bushes to add to the romantic ambience of marrying – and then partying – outside.” Dawn Jones, My Little Wedding Fairy | www.mylittleweddingfairy.com 57

STYLE INSPO #4: CONTEMPORARY WEDDING

“When wanting to achieve a contemporary or minimalistic wedding you most definitely need to have a ‘less is more’ approach. Set a strategy in place where every detail is chosen for a reason; favouring neutral colours to allow a soft and elegant look to be achieved. A simple copper piping backdrop or geometric-shaped arch can be dressed with greenery, fabric, pampas grass or minimal florals, for something modern and also effortless. Choose centrepieces which include geometric shapes or sculptural candelabras, then add a simple greenery runner, along with golden taper candle holders, to create the minimalistic look you desire. Acrylic seating charts and matching menus also work well, while white pillar candles in different sized vases create elegance to your ceremony aisles. Team with wooden, Chiavari or acrylic chairs, which should be left naked apart from some bunches of greenery attached to the back.” Victoria Shaw-Unsworth, A Beautiful Occasion | www.instagram.com/abeautifuloccasionne

TO DO OR NOT TO DO

Emma Weston-Jones from Morpethbased Emma Bunting on her venue styling dos and don’ts… DO check with your venue that you can Sellotape, pin or Blue Tack decorations to walls before buying or hiring them. DON’T overload your décor – it can look too cluttered and detract from the importance of the day. DO be authentic with your styling. Love travelling? Go for a travel theme! Love camping? Go natural! DON’T forget to think about your carbon footprint and how hiring can be a great way rather than buying decorations and then throwing them away. DO choose a colour palette that fits around something you love. From a bouquet you spied in Your North East Wedding to a bridesmaid’s dress you’re hoping your bestie will say ‘yes’ to – you can fit your colour palette around that! DON’T be afraid to express yourself. It is your day, after all… Visit www.emma-bunting.co.uk for more information and how to buy or hire. 58

HOT TOPIC Those in-the-know solve your wedding dilemmas

HATS OFF I’m trying to think of a good hen party that’s different from the usual drinking or travelling norm. What can you suggest? A boozy night out isn’t everyone’s ideal hen party, particularly where different generations are involved. A more sophisticated idea may be to have a day’s crafting session. Sitting round a table making something you can be proud of at the end of the day, is a good way to get to know each other better, and to spend time together before the big day. There’s always a lot of chat, but also times of intense concentration, plus a photo or two to remember it all by. My Make a Fascinator in a Day can be arranged at a venue you

have booked, such as your local village hall; the necessities being tables, chairs, electrical points and decent lighting. Participants are encouraged to bring colour swatches to match to a special outfit, while the tutor will arrive in good time with all of the equipment and materials, and will do the clearing up afterwards. There’s three styles to choose from, with the group pre-selecting the one design for their workshop. The designs offer varying degrees of complexity, but all three are designed with beginners in mind. Norma Arthur | Amble Pin Cushion https://amblepincushion.co.uk

RING THE CHANGES My fiancé proposed without a ring, as he knew I’d want to pick my own piece of jewellery. The trouble is, his mam has since offered one of her own – which isn’t to my taste! How can I tell her without causing offence? Depending on the design and quality of the ring, there may be a possibility of remodelling it. You could explain that although it’s a beautiful ring, it doesn’t fit in with your own style of jewellery, and that the contrast means that they just don’t seem to complement each other. If there’s the chance to modify it, try to show your mother-in-law-to-be that by updating the ring it’s still creating an heirloom piece which can be passed through the family. She could even look at ideas with you. It could be something as simple as changing the band from a different type of metal or gold. If it can’t be changed, don’t be disheartened – it’s highly unlikely she’ll be properly offended, so long as you approach the subject with the right manner. ASK THE EXPERTS SAY CHEESE My wife-to-be and I love strong flavours and want something unusual for our cake. Do you have any suggestions? I have five words for you: a cake made of cheese! As you love strong flavours I would recommend our oak smoked cheese; this is lovely cheese that’s smoked over oak chippings to create a bronzed outer core with a beautiful smoky taste. The other cheese in regards to strong flavours would be our Elsdon goats’ cheese, which has a delicate flavour with a clean refreshing finish to the palate. Our bestselling cheese, which is our Northumberland Nettle, would be something a little different to finish the cake off – it has a gorgeous green flecked appearance and is always a talking point. Plus, as our cakes are made to order, you can select which order you would like the cheeses to be placed in, to ensure you enjoy lots of your favourite flavours. PLAN OF ACTION We’re just starting our big-day journey and neither of us have a clue what we should look for when booking a venue. Is there anything in particular we should consider? Start by making your rough guest list, considering whether you’re going big or keeping the circle small. Next… what’s your style? Have you ever had a vision of how your dream wedding would be? Is it traditional, contemporary, or rustic? If you’re not sure, go and explore a mix of venues with your partner and see which gives you the wow factor! Remember, it isn’t just how the venue looks, but also how warming the

LIVE FOREVER I really want fresh flowers for my bouquet, but hate the fact once they wilt and die I’ll only get to see them in pictures. What other ways are there in terms of drying them out that I can keep as a keepsake? We specialise in drying your flowers in 3D using silica sand, then setting them into a high quality crystal clear resin. That way they’ll last a lifetime! You don’t have to preserve every single bloom, and we have a huge range of moulds available to ensure we capture your wedding day exactly as you remember it, from love signs to huge display blocks. What’s more, we aim to keep our prices low to ensure everyone can keep a piece of the magic, whilst not compromising on quality, to help you create the most beautiful bespoke preservation. staff and wedding coordinator are, as you want to work with someone who can bring your vision to life. Also bear in mind the space, as you want enough for free movement – but not too much that your guests are playing hide and seek all night. Finally, consider your budget, grabbing a brochure at every venue so you can do your homework and see what each package has to offer. Don’t be disheartened if some venues don’t offer packages that exactly meet your needs – most will be open to upgrades or creating a bespoke package to make your wedding personal to you. The Bridgerton effect

Editorial assistant Gracie Leader looks at how Netflix’s biggest show has influenced weddings

E

https://dominikamiechowska.co.uk

veryone’s favourite period drama re-entered our lives with a bang at the end of March when season two of Bridgerton became Netflix’s most viewed English-language TV series, watched for 251.7 million hours in its debut week alone. And the show is certainly not going anywhere, having been renewed for both seasons three and four back in April of last year, following the huge success of season one.

VENUES One aspect that defines the awe-inspiring beauty of the show is the grand country homes and sweeping ballrooms. As nearly all of the filming for the show took place in the South of England, many of the real locations you see in the show can in fact be hired out for your wedding celebrations. In the opening episode of the first season, the outdoor Vauxhall Ball set the standard for the grandness we could expect. The parklands of Stowe House (www.stowe.co.uk) in Bedfordshire was the location for these scenes, the 17th-century Ducal Palace boasts individuality and elegance for a fairytale wedding. The ballrooms in Leigh Court (www.leighcourt.co.uk) in Bristol are where we see many of the characters dance together at a number of parties held throughout the series. The 19th-century mansion is surrounded by 27 acres of wooded grounds and green lawns, and the grand double staircase in the Great Hall is perfect for making your first entrance as a married couple.

Many of us are captivated by the opulence and extravagance of high society shown on our screens and so desperate to feed some historical glamour into our own lives – especially during our big day. Regency era and Bridgerton-themed celebrations are set to be one of the biggest wedding trends this year. Achieving this lavish style may seem impossible at first but we’ve broken down some of the simplest ways to inject 18th-century luxury into your nuptials.

COLOUR PALETTE The Regency era was defined by the baby blue colour that can be spotted in almost every episode. Known as Regency blue, it is the perfect hue to weave into your flowers, decorations or dress code. For a 21st-century update, Pantone have named the colour of 2022 ‘Very Peri’. The shade of violet-infused blue is perfect for a subtle nod to the Bridgerton world. Soft tones of blush and pink were also extremely popular at the time and are perfect for creating an ultra romantic setting when you tie the knot. Take inspiration from Princess Beatrice of York’s wedding to Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in summer of 2020, the pretty pinks and fresh natural palette were a more modern twist on a classic regal wedding. 65

INVITATIONS Sending out your invitations to your guests is one of the first ways to set the tone for your wedding. Handwritten notes featuring swooping calligraphy perfectly encapsulate the elegant nature of your celebration. Incorporate watercolour and impressionist-style florals into your stationery for a whimsical affair. Gold detailing and other refined touches make sure your wedding stationery gives a perfect nod to the Regency era. Sealing your invites with a wax seal will make guests feel as though they’re receiving salacious gossip from Lady Whistledown herself.

FASHION It’s not just on screen fashion that has been inspired by the extravagance of the Regency era. Those attending this year’s Met Gala were asked to adhere to the dress code ‘Gilded Glamour’, taking inspiration from the high society of Gilded Age New York during the late 1800s. For a wedding gown fit to make you a diamond of the first water lots of inspiration can be taken from the dresses of this time. Empire waist gowns were extremely popular during the time period and it’s unsurprising considering how flattering they are. For an ultraromantic style look for a dress with capped sleeves also. Corsets were, of course, a huge part of fashion in the Regency era and now they are once again having resurgence. Whilst during the time 66

period they were a part of the undergarments worn by the bride, now they can be a featured part of your ensemble. One easy way to add a touch of gilded glamour to your look is by accessorising with opera gloves. To modernise your wedding gown a sheer pair is the way forward. Grooms can take inspiration from the dukes of Bridgerton and wear a morning suit complete with a tailcoat for a look that can compete with Jane Austen’s Mr Darcy. To ensure all your guests are involved with the theme of your celebrations, a black tie or formal wear dress code can encourage everyone to attend in their finery.

www.lauraberesford.com

FLOWERS Any watcher of Bridgerton will know the budget they had for flowers when making the show was pretty impressive. The dreamy purple wisteria that draped over the exterior of the Bridgerton family’s residence caused fans mass hysteria, as many were keen to recreate the swoon-worthy look. Although it can be hard to get your hands on, if you’re having a spring time wedding you may be lucky as many country house wedding venues have wisteria climbing up the outside of their buildings. It’s definitely something worth asking your venue about. If you want to recreate the lush floral arrangements seen in Daphne’s wedding to the Duke of Hastings in the first season, shown last year, English garden-style arrangements with fresh greenery are best to create that clean and natural setting. Standing beneath a floral arch, just like Daphne and Simon, when saying your vows will ensure your photographer can capture some dreamy and ethereal images from your ceremony.

INSPIRATION

CAKE One of the most spectacular visuals from Daphne and Simon’s wedding was a massive wedding cake that stood at 4.5-foot tall. In addition to its impressive height, the centrepiece was extremely detailed, right down to the Bridgerton and Hastings crests iced on. Detailed, extravagant cakes are certainly making a comeback in 2022. This year the UK’s oldest British caterer is recreating a royal wedding cake made by its founder 126 years ago, to celebrate their 175th anniversary. Searcy’s catering (https://searcys.co.uk) has taken a trip back through its archives to the cake made for the1896 royal wedding of Princess Maud, then the future Queen of Norway, to Prince Carl of Denmark. Five-tiers of Dundee fruit cake are covered with delicate marzipan and white and gold lattice work icing before topped with carefully crafted sugar work of flowers, fruits, cherubs and lions – all recreated by the cakemakers. This style of cake is perfect for those going all out regalia-inspired on their wedding day. Pressed floral cakes are a great option for those still inspired by the 18th century but wanting a more earthy, whimsical feel for their day. Bakeries typically use edible flowers grown, picked and hand-pressed. They can be designed according to your favourite flowers and even match your bouquet.

ENTERTAINMENT One of the most memorable elements of Bridgerton that audiences hold close to their heart is the orchestral renditions of pop songs throughout the show. Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift played by string ensemble provides the backdrop for Anthony Bridgerton and Kate Sharma’s courtship in season two. If you wish to recreate this soundtrack for your own love story, a string quartet or harpist will produce the perfect atmosphere for walking down the aisle or during your first dance. If you too want a mixture of classical and chart tunes, ask your guests to suggest some of their favourite tracks to be played by your musicians. If you plan on getting hitched in the warmer months, traditional lawn games are an amazing era-inspired way to entertain your guests after the ceremony. A game of croquet before the evening celebrations is fun for both young and older guests alike.

DECORATION Maximalists rejoice as the only way to decorate a Regency era-inspired wedding is to go all out. And we mean ALL OUT. Look to see if your venue has a chandelier, as this is a perfect way to recreate the grand atmosphere seen in the Bridgerton world. Oversized centrepieces are a signature of nearly all the weddings and balls held in the series. Work with your florist and wedding planner to create some awe-inspiring table decorations your guest will remember.

For your tableware, fine, floral china is a gorgeous nod to 18th-century Britain and the perfect decorative touch for the detail-orientated bride. Gold cutlery or gold-rimmed glassware flaunt opulence and abundance but can be inexpensive if hired. Having a champagne tower at your reception is the perfect indulgence enjoyed by high society – and your guests too. It’s a great touch to follow your wedding toast or a grand welcome as your guests enter. 67

Life on the edge Why conform to a traditional bridal look when there are so many other ways to add an edge to your big day?

T

his stunning shoot was organised by Mirror Mirror Durham hair salon owner Lauren Fort, who wanted to create a collection of edgy-looking brides. “I wanted to showcase a twist on the traditional bride,” she explains. “I worked together with a team of local suppliers, all of which provided their services free of charge to promote their amazing businesses. The shoot took place at Newcastle wedding venue The Willows at the Woodmans, with the talented photographer, florist, make-up artist and bridal boutique working in perfect harmony to produce exactly the look I’d envisaged.” 78

Q&A Our two experts answer your summer hair and beauty dilemmas FEELING HOT HOT HOT!

Getty Images

What are your top hair tips for a summer wedding for hair and beauty? Hair stylist Amy Burns of Niche Hairdressing says: First off, I always recommend having regular haircuts to keep your hair looking fresh before your big day. Homecare is another huge factor in keeping your locks in great condition, so speak to your stylist about the best products available to suit your own hair type. Is your hair dyed? Book an appointment with your colourist about a week before your big day, to allow for any colour stains to be removed in time. When it comes to hairstyles, if possible I like to suggest updos, because once your mane is up it’s something you don’t have to worry about. Wearing your hair down in the summer can often lead to it not looking the same for when your evening guests arrive, due to the heat and humidity. Whatever you choose, book a trial and bring whatever accessory you want to wear in or on your hair along, so you can get a really good visual of what your style will look like on the day. www.niche-hair.com 82

Bridal make-up artist Sandra Hetherington of Makeup by Sandra says: I love a summer wedding. It’s my favourite time of year, however, heat and wedding-day nerves can present a challenge to lasting, polished make-up. I’ve worked abroad in hot temperatures and have learned some valuable techniques, such as keeping my skincare and foundations in a cool bag and incorporating cooling mists to refresh clients. With skincare, I prefer to layer a hyaluronic acid serum under a light, gel-based moisturiser rather than using a heavy cream, even if the skin is dry, as I find this works well for all complexions. I also always choose long-wearing formulas that don’t crease, fade or run. The key phrases to look for are ‘all day’, ‘12-hour wear’, ‘long lasting’ and anything water-resistant or waterproof. Priming the skin also ensures staying power, selecting a primer that will work for your skin type. After your foundation has been applied, sheer loose powder is also essential to keep everything in place and fend off shine. There are many different types to choose from and the textures vary, so choose one that will work with your skin and overall look. Finish with setting spray to keep everything in place. www.facebook.com/BigDayMakeup

PURA ANADA NATURAL BLACK MASCARA £14.50, https://liveinthelight.co.uk “Hypoallergenic, ph balanced, paraben-free, gluten-free, mercury-free and formulated with eco-cert approved ingredients – what’s the catch? There doesn’t seem to be one! I was a touch sceptical at first, but I’m actually rather impressed with it. The formula is silky when wet and completely matte when dry. Although I didn’t put it to the test of crying and have no skin allergies, I can confirm that it’s smudge-proof, builds well without getting claggy and was very kind on my eyes.” – Beth Morton

PERRICONE MD NO MAKEUP EYESHADOW £30, www.perriconemd.co.uk “In the spirit of full disclosure, I did not get this No Makeup concept initially. But having tried it, I’m more than a convert, I’m an addict! The light-reflecting pigments provide a soft, satin finish while the serum texture formulated with acyl-glutathione means it glides on and blends like a dream. It didn’t crease and my eyes looked brighter. It also acts as a great base for a bolder eyeshadow look, but works just as well on its own for subtle everyday wear.” – Kelly Andrews

OPV LOOSE PIGMENT £8.50, www.opvbeauty.com “I’ve never tried loose pigment eyeshadows before and was sceptical when these first arrived in the office, but after just one application, I was hooked! These highly-concentrated products are easy to apply and are vegan and cruelty-free – a huge bonus. I love how you can create a soft and subtle look or build up the product for more glam.” – Olivia Gibson

TRIED & TESTED EYEKO LONDON LIMITLESS EYESHADOW PALETTE £25, www.lookfantastic.com “Shimmering champagne gold is the most subtle of this palette’s six-shade collection, creating a soft, glowing look that I loved. While those looking for a bold, striking look, will adore the darker brown options. The other shades are red/gold inspired and all suited my skin tone perfectly. Each hue is easily blendable and all work well as a subtle daytime or standout evening look. They’re long-lasting and after a full day, my eyes still looked fabulous.” – Melissa Barker

YOU CAUGHT MY EYE! We put together some gorgeous weddingday eye make-up looks using the newest launches to hit the shelves ICONIC LONDON GLAZE CRAYONS £24, www.iconiclondon.com “I’m always on the lookout for pigmented eyeshadows that are quick and easy to apply, and this dual-ended product didn’t disappoint. On one end of the stick is a creamy crayon that glides over the eyes and blends out beautifully, then flip the product over to find a non-sticky glitter liquid that stays on all day – it’s the perfect duo!” – Olivia Gibson DECK OF SCARLET OVER-ARCHING BROW KIT £34, www.deckofscarlet.com “This fab new kit has everything you need to create the perfect brow. I won’t lie I panicked slightly when I opened it up, not knowing where to start, but the super-helpful folk at Deck of Scarlet have included a stepby-step how to on the reverse, so all was well. The final look is subtle and totally natural, the perfect complement to a bridal make-up look. The highlight for me is the sculpting wax. It held my brows in place all day without leaving them feeling greasy or crunchy – both of which I’ve experienced with other products!” – Kelly Andrews

The remote location in which the hotel resides makes it a wonderful, limitless playground for guests. With a plethora of hiking trails and cycling routes directly from the front door, couples can spend their days exploring this mountainous region either solo or accompanied by an expert local guide. Those looking for some R&R can retire to The Library, which is home to a thoughtfully curated collection of antique Alpine Journals and contemporary coffee table books, in addition, The Game Room serves as a space to relax and unwind or to enjoy a glass of bubbly from the bar after an active day in the mountains. Caribbean vibes Enjoy breathtaking, tropical views whilst listening to turquoise waters rolling in with a glass of St. Lucia’s famous rum punch in hand

A

s the St. Lucians say, “No pressure, no problem!” So many tropical islands provide luxury, but only St. Lucia offers this alongside the feeling of joy and laughter courtesy of the amazing people. Such a friendly country, I was so warmly welcomed – and laughed a lot! This is the ultimate location to unwind after planning your big day. If you don’t know much about St. Lucia, it’s an eastern Caribbean Island with a pair of dramatically tapered mountains, known as the Pitons. These volcanic mounds are a spectacular landmark of the island, lush and green and ready for the adventurer in you to explore. St. Lucia’s tropical climate makes it a prime spot for year-round sunshine and warm weather. Prepare for short downpours as those surrounding rainforests bursting with colour need watering.

THE LANDINGS RESORT The Landings Resort & Spa is a beachfront hotel with a private marina, positioned on Rodney Bay. The Resort invites you to enhance your stay with its all-inclusive package, allowing you not only to sample their extensive food and beverage offerings but full access to the quality fitness centre, unlimited use of the sea kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and snorkelling gear. During my stay, I enjoyed the resort’s entertainment. Taking in the Caribbean vibes, we enjoyed a delicious barbecue feast on the beach while watching fire throwers and limbo dancers doing their thing on the stage… and did I mention there was rum punch?! If your honeymoon is more of a familymoon, the resort has you covered with its awesome Kids Club and babysitting service. What more could you ask for?

HONEYMOONS

ACCOMMODATION Whatever your accommodation preference: marina view, beachfront or ocean view, you’ll be blown away. My marina view suite was equipped with a state-of-the-art kitchen and private plunge pool. Listening to the birds with a cup of tea in hand in my plunge pool is a memory I’ll never forget.

THE LANDINGS SPA The revamped, luxurious 7,000-square-foot spa at The Landings features serene therapy rooms, some with outdoor hydrotherapy terraces so you can relax and take in the views after your treatment. As well as enjoying massages, manis and pedis, you can request a hair stylist to ensure your locks have full attention during your fabulous stay. There’s also a state-of-the-art fitness centre with on-site staff and personal trainers to keep you in shape.

ST. LUCIAN CUISINE You can’t go to the Caribbean without enjoying the freshest seafood. However, the local specialties are a must try from curried goat to breadfruit (similar to potatoes but sweeter and starchier), and saltfish (stewed fish, which is usually sold dried and salted, with boiled green bananas, locally referred to as green fig).

EXCURSIONS If you like to do more than lay on a sun lounger, then St. Lucia has much to offer whether that’s zip-ling through the rainforest or taking a guided hike up St. Lucia’s signature Pitons. During my stay, I enjoyed a visit to Project Chocolat from the well-known Hotel Chocolat. I was blown away by the luscious rainforest location, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to the cacao groves. I was then invited to make my very own chocolate bar and tasted some amazing foods from their cacao inspired menu which included cacao mac ‘n cheese and even cacao burgers!

FIVE STAR LUXURY If you really want to push the boat out for your once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon, then take the transfer from Hewanorra International Airport to the resort via private helicopter. Just let The Landings know and they’ll arrange it all! Furthermore, to extend the luxe package, you can request a butler service to make your stay as carefree and relaxing as possible. Go on, treat yourself !

Travel goals

An island country nestled in South Asia, Sri Lanka has always been a bucket-list destination for Louise Prance, with her recent trip living up to her expectations and then some…

T

here were countless reasons why Sri Lanka was my number one bucket list destination – with the tropical island pipping New Zealand, the Maldives and Vietnam to the top spot – but the one that stood out to me is the fact it is a Buddhist country, with a culture based on peace and family. While the unstable social climate was garnering news coverage at the time of my trip, there is not one point during my stay that I felt any unrest. From the second the tropical heat hit me as I arrived, to the moment I stepped back on the plane with a heavy heart upon my departure, I felt totally secure.

MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES The flight time may be long, however, it was comfortable, and oh boy, does Sri Lanka make up for the time spent in the air. Upon arrival at the airport, we were whisked away at a rate of knots towards our destination of Cinnamon Bentota Beach hotel. My advice? Save the jet lag slumber for a little while longer, as you’d be mistaken to not fully immerse yourself in the changing landscape you’ll experience on the journey there. The hustle and bustle of Colombo is an assault to the senses – albeit an exciting one. Arriving in the morning, we watched as parents took their children to school on TukTuks and workers started their day. However, soon enough, the city rolled away and we were treated to the lush green landscape Sri Lanka is so famous for. Arriving at the Cinnamon Beach Hotel was an altogether memorable experience. A luxurious property nestled in the mesmerising Indian Ocean 96

along the southern coast of Sri Lanka, it has a heritage dating back to the 60’s and was designed by one of Asia’s most influential architects, Geoffrey Bawa. It is the ultimate tropical destination perfect for an art and architecture enthusiast or a lover of exquisite oceans.

A GASTRONOMIC DELIGHT While tired and hungry from our journey, these emotions were soon replaced with appreciation of the traditional welcome we received. Heading into the hotel we were given a quick tour of the awe-inspiring grounds and facilities, and it was straight down to breakfast. With many restaurants on site, Ottimo and Zest are used as a buffet option for all three meals, suffice to say, there’s something for everyone. However, when in Rome and all that – we immediately tucked into curry for breakfast, a habit we all continued throughout the stay. If you’re looking for something ala carte, the beachside Sea-MeatsSpice Seafood restaurant is the place to be. With the Head Chef looking after the menu, be prepared for a gastronomical sensation, before retiring to the plush sofas for a sundowner with the sand between your toes. The Fuze bar is perfect for a nightcap, and with dramatic ceilings and art aplenty, it oozes luxury. Other highlights for fellow foodies included high tea looking out over the ocean, plus the authentic Sri Lankan cooking lesson and Chef’s Table Experience and dinner – all of which are able to be booked directly through the hotel. If you’re looking for a special honeymoon treat – I’d recommend all of the above!

HONEYMOONS

ART AND CULTURE Well known for its jungles, Sri Lanka certainly didn’t disappoint on this front. Tearing ourselves away from the array of calming pools – and pool bar – we headed to the Lunuganga Geoffrey Bawa’s Country Estate, where we were treated to a tour. If art and culture is your thing – this is one excursion not to be missed. The country house of the renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, the estate is just a short distance from the hotel, and had been used as a cinnamon estate during the Dutch era and then a rubber plantation under the British. In 1949, the estate was bought by Bawa and was converted into a weekend house where he created a tropical version of a European Renaissance Garden. It took the architect 40 years to complete the house.

OUT ON THE WATER However, for me, the highlight was most definitely the boat ride on the Madu Ganga and visit to the Mangrove Forest. With an excellent tour guide, we jetted down the river doing our best to spot all the animals that were highlighted as making the river their home. From bear monkeys to water monitors to jellyfish, to kingfisher’s – it was a veritable treat for an animal lover like me. The jury is still out on whether I’m happy or disappointed that the crocodiles kept themselves at bay. And with Mangrove forests stabilising the coastline, reducing erosion from storm surges, currents, waves, and tides, the intricate root system of mangroves also makes these forests attractive to fish and other organisms seeking food and shelter from predators. With little stops along the way, it was truly special to see cinnamon being made amidst the forest – and I’d recommend bringing some pocket change as it’ll be a feat to walk away empty handed. If you’re one for a spot of shopping combined with a walking tour of a beautiful town, make sure you head to Galle. We combined this with the river tour, and it was well worth the hour’s drive. A stunning town steeped in history there are views for miles and it would be well worth booking with Walkers Tours, and in particular Ashoka Dissanayke, to learn more about this beautifully resplendent town’s heritage. If you do head to Galle, don’t forget to leave space in your luggage for your journey home. With boutique shops and traditional stores alike, I’d challenge anyone to leave empty handed. If you’re looking for souvenirs or mementos of your trip – this is the place to get them.

TOURISM SUPPORT Sri Lanka has had its fair share of upheaval, from the 2004 Tsunami, the terrorist attacks in 2019 and now the national crisis. However, in my opinion this is all the more reason to go and visit this wonderful country, and give its tourism industry the boost it so desperately needs. Not only did I feel safe wherever I travelled in Sri Lanka, I am already planning my next trip back, and this time I may buy an open-ended ticket home…

A PEACEFUL NIGHT’S SLEEP Cinnamon Bentota Beach offers 16 Suites with unique sets of artworks that were commissioned from Sri Lankan artists as part of Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts’ pledge to support the local arts and crafts. Eight artists were commissioned to depict a theme and record what they felt the name of the suite meant to them - resulting in each suite telling a story of the people and languages of Sri Lanka.

ADRENALINE JUNKIE If watersports are your thing, you won’t be disappointed at Cinnamon Bentota Beach. Taking place on the Bentota river, there are endless options from water skiing, to jet skis, banana boats and doughnuts. While first trying my hand at the doughnuts, the jet ski was a definite front runner. With the water so calm and the river so vast, it was the perfect opportunity to open up and let rip!
