I

f you’ve been reading this fabulous magazine over the years, then you might well remember me – as I used to be the Editor back in 2020! As the lovely Olivia moves on to pasture’s new, I’ve taken up your favourite title once more, and am loving getting stuck back into the wonderful world of weddings in what has got to be the most beautiful area in the UK. As I am sure you’re well aware, planning your wedding is incredibly exciting, but it can also give you and your intended a massive headache. All those ‘debates’ – and by that I mean silly squabbles – over what you think your ideal celebration should be, as opposed to your partner’s, is stressful with a capital S, so with this in mind let our fabulous team at County Wedding Magazines take some of that hard work away from you. Starting on page 15, you’ve six pages of wedding venues to discover, from South Northumberland’s finest to waterside locations that’ll take your breath away. Afterwards, head to page 49, where we’ve compiled an A-Z of wedding catering packed full of 26 regional suppliers. Just be sure to have some snacks to hand, as you’ll soon start salivating when you see their delicious dishes… Looking for wedding jewellery and accessories to complement that dress or suit you’re planning on wearing? A host of North East designers are on hand for essential advice on page 73, before you enjoy even more inspiration courtesy of our reader weddings, over on page 26. And don’t forget to enter our fab competitions, with a minimoon in the Lake District up for grabs (p83), as well as the chance of winning vouchers to dine at Acklam Hall’s Tomahawk Steakhouse over on page 13.

RUNAWAY BRIDE

https://garywalsh.co.uk

Logged on to Your North East Wedding with thoughts of the two of you eloping? Consider Northumberland’s Langley Castle, currently experiencing a boom in ‘elopement-moons’ – that’s an elopement wedding and honeymoon rolled into one. Located in Langley-on-Tyne, near Hexham, the venue has seen a surge in enquiries for its ‘Weddings for Two’ package, a speciality at the Medieval castle since creating its How to Enjoy the Perfect UK Elopement guide. This means you can marry at Langley and then stay on for your honeymoon, having no guests to escape from or stress of getting to the airport on time. The 14th century fairy-tale castle has many romantic nooks and crannies to explore, including raised window seats in the drawing room and castle bedrooms perfect for ‘we’ time. The 2AA Josephine’s dining room has tables nestled in alcoves, ideal for an intimate candlelit dinner, while you can also enjoy the 10-acre grounds, choosing to say ‘I do’ in the woodland weddings area, adorned with fairylights and decorated with floral bouquets. “We know how to make an elopement-moon super-special,” says Langley Castle’s executive general manager, Margaret Livingstone-Evans. “With us you can enjoy extraordinary photography on our magnificent battlements, take a romantic stroll along Bamburgh Beach, then snuggle up in blankets in our summerhouse, watching our resident peacocks strut past.” A wedding for two and a two-night stay at Langley Castle costs £1,520, including the ceremony, witnesses, Champagne and canapés, Northumbrian breakfasts and candlelit dinners. The elopement-moon package can be extended for additional days, which costs £375 per castle room, per night, on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis. Visit www.langleycastle.co.uk to find out more – and turn to page 16 to discover more of the delights the venue has on offer.

YOU BEAUTY! Want to look your very best for the big day? Be sure to book up for Durham make-up artist Lyndsey Morgan’s new prewedding pamper packages, with LVL, dermaplaning and brow shapes and tints now available alongside her regular make-up services. “LVL is a treatment that gives the natural lashes length, volume, lift and colour,” explains Lyndsey, Make up Artist of the Year finalist in the 2022 English Hair & Beauty Awards. “It’s perfect for opening up the eye area and a fab alternative to false lashes, lasting between six to eight weeks. Dermaplaning, meanwhile, is a manual exfoliation technique using a medical-grade scalpel to gently remove dead skin and peach fuzz. It’s a quick procedure that gives immediate results, diminishing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and superficial pigmentation. Alternatively, why not book me for a brow shape and tint, tidying and refining your eyebrows while keeping a soft and enhanced look ready for your bridal make-up?” Visit www.lyndseymorgan-makeup.co.uk to find out more. 10

WINE IT DOWN

Planning your wedding day will involve plenty of tears and tantrums, so with this in mind head over to The Wedding Taylor’s ‘Wine and Whine’ Instagram story every Wednesday at 7:30pm to talk wedding woes with plenty of fellow brides-to-be. Run by Morpeth wedding planner Hannah Taylor, the idea behind the evening’s chat all started from a catch up between Hannah and her friends. “Once a week we head out for a glass of vino and moan about the past seven days,” she says. “It makes us feel so much better to get any issues off our chests that I realised it would have a positive effect on future brides, too.” Couples send in their questions or complaints about any number of topics, then Hannah spends the evening answering questions and talking through any problems. “It’s a great way to meet other brides, plus you’ll see everyone struggles with the same issues. You could even stumble across the answer to a question that you hadn’t thought to ask. It’s a lot of fun – and I get many ladies saying they’ll still come and join me every Wednesday… even after they’re married!” Log on to The Wedding Taylor’s Instagram story each Wednesday at 7:30pm by visiting www.instagram.com/theweddingtaylor – or find out more about Hannah’s wedding planning services by visiting the website http://theweddingtaylor.com

BARN ON THE BAY

Located on a working farm on the Northumbrian coast, Barn on the Bay offers beachside ceremonies and is the perfect combination of both coast and country for couples in search of a flexible approach. What’s more, the inspiration for the farm as a wedding venue came from the actual owners, Alison and Phil, hosting their reception there! “Our wedding was so perfect that we wanted to give others the opportunity to enjoy their own day here,” says the couple. “We transformed our Cow Shed into a stunning, rustic venue, and in 2018 hosted our first wedding. The latest development to the barn will also see the launch of a farm kitchen

in 2023, which we can’t wait to show off.” Couples can say ‘I do’ with up to 150 guests at the beachside ceremony area, located in the dunes with spectacular sea views and offering seating for up to 150. Alternatively, wed in The Paddock, located directly opposite the Cow Shed Barn and providing a fantastic setting for a relaxed, outdoor wedding; or the Cow Shed Barn itself, with grand entrance doors leading into the ceremony space. Receptions also take place within the Barn, hosting 200 of your friends and family for a party like no other. Lounge seating, straw bales and fire tables give guests lots of options to relax in if they’re not on the dancefloor, and there’s also a veranda for guests to chill beneath, enjoying a beverage from The Old Dog & Duck cocktail horsebox bar or the main bar itself, The Old Tom.

you can also have an outdoor blessing in the spectacular surroundings of the waterfall itself. Your celebrations can then be continued in the venue’s Garden Room (up to 60 guests) or in an additional marquee (up to 150 guests), where you’ll enjoy a cocktail reception in the sunshine of the garden or indulge in a hog roast buffet around fires in the courtyard. Now, following an extensive restoration, this Grade II listed building is an incredible wedding venue offering a dedicated function space, spectacular sea views and an

array of exquisite catering options. Say your vows and start the next chapter of your love story within the iconic Art Deco design of the function suite, fitted with floor-to-ceiling windows to showcase the unmatched sea view while flooding the room with natural light. ST. MARY’S LIGHTHOUSE AND VISITOR CENTRE 0191 643 4777 | https://my.northtyneside.gov.uk/category/635/st-marys-lighthouse St Mary’s Lighthouse and Visitor Centre has a unique location upon the tidal St Mary’s Island and is only accessible for two periods a day, when the tide retreats and exposes the causeway that connects the island to the headland. Built by Trinity House between 1896 and 1898 to provide a warning light on a treacherous stretch of coast, during its 96 years of operation the lighthouse was of great economic importance to maritime trade in the area. Now available for wedding ceremonies, it makes a fantastic talking point for guests as you take your vows.

Your wedding ceremony is held in the function room within the visitor centre, formerly known as the Lighthouse Keeper’s cottages. Located up a spiral staircase, the room can hold up to 50 people – including the couple and registrar – and offers amazing sea and coastal views. Your reception is also held within this space, before you and your photographer enjoy the many photo opportunities to be had. And don’t forget to get some snaps within the rich biodiversity of flora and fauna – one of the few areas of semi-natural grassland in North Tyneside. 25

Gemma and Laurens’ wedding showcased both their Netherlands and North East backgrounds Images courtesy of Vanessa Adams Photography

G

emma and Laurens met at a Salvation Army summer camp in the Netherlands. “Laurens had attended every summer for years, while I was there for the first time as a volunteer,” remembers Gemma. “We sat next to each other at breakfast and chatted about our mutual appreciation for Geordie Shore – despite Laurens’ broken English! We became friends, and over the next 12 months, Laurens WhatsApped his way into my heart. After a year as a longdistance couple, he moved to the North East to be with me.” Unbeknown to Gemma, Laurens had asked for her dad’s blessing to marry her back in 2019. “It was right before we moved to Canada for a year for my work,” continues the bride. “Unfortunately, the pandemic hit, all the jewellery shops closed, and Laurens’ proposal was put on hold. With plenty of time to chat thanks to the stayat-home rules, we discussed our future and Laurens revealed his thwarted proposal plans. When things started to reopen, we went to a jewellers in Ottawa and designed my diamond and sapphire engagement ring together. However, the proposal itself was a surprise; Laurens got down on one knee at a secluded spot overlooking Maligne Lake during a trip to the Canadian Rockies. It was eight years to the day since we first got together.” The couple set their wedding for the 16th October, 2021, choosing St Peter’s Church in Croft-on-Tees for the ceremony, followed by a reception at Rockliffe Hall. Here, Gemma tells us more about their amazing nuptials…

REAL WEDDINGS

FLYING THE FLAGS It was important for the couple to reflect their British and Dutch cultures throughout the big day. “The colour scheme was blue, white and touches of red, in line with the flags of both our countries,” says Gemma. “We also included a lot of Delfts Blauw pottery or designs inspired by the style, and my aunt created matching illustrations which featured in our stationery.” The favours were also Dutchinspired, with each guest gifted a box in the shape of a canal house. “They were filled with mini stroopwafels, chocolate and drop, which is Dutch liquorice. My mam and I spent hours assembling and filling the boxes together!” The North East and Dutch elements didn’t end there, with the wedding cake also merging the two together. “The cake had one layer of fruit cake and another layer of vanilla sponge with a twist – it was coloured bright Dutch orange inside!” continues the bride. “Decorated with Delfts Blauw designs, edible pearls and sugar roses, it was finished with a Delft kissing couple cake topper. We also had an additional cheese stack, with three varieties to represent different locations. There was a wheel of Cuddy’s Cave from Northumberland, a wheel of Wensleydale – our mini-moon destination – and a slice of Reypenaer-aged Gouda from the Netherlands. Both the cake and cheese were delicious!”

DRESSING UP Having lived in Spain for a year while studying, Gemma also knew exactly what type of wedding dress she wanted to wear. “I’d always admired the Pronovias store in Madrid whenever I was in the city,” she explains. “When I got engaged, I visited Victoria Robson Bridal, my local Pronovias stockist, and Victoria immediately understood my vision. Their Pickford dress was a firm favourite from the start. A lacy fitted, mermaid-style gown with illusion sleeves, it was perfect for an autumnal wedding. It was also extra-special as the hand-sewn embellishments reminded me of the many sequins my mam spent hours sewing on my costumes when I was a young dancer. The look was accessorised with a bespoke overskirt and cathedral veil, blue sapphire and diamond earrings – a gift from my dad, and also my ‘something blue’ – and embellished stilettos.” Laurens, his best man and groomsman also looked the part, opting for three-piece racing green tweed-style check suits. “They were accessorised with red ties, cognac-brown shoes and belts,” 27

says Gemma. “Then there were my stunning bridesmaids, who wore dark blue Adrianna Pappell full-length gowns with long sleeves. Fully embellished with sequins and beading with floral designs to echo my dress, I loved seeing them glammed up and looking incredible.”

THE GREAT BRITISH MENU When it came to catering Gemma and Laurens wanted to treat their wedding party to the very best British cuisine. “Upon arrival at Rockliffe Hall our guests were served peach bellini and passionfruit/mango mix mocktails, with tomato and shallot bruschetta, mini baked potatoes with smoked salmon and lamb kofta canapés,” continues Gemma. “Both Laurens and I are huge fans of afternoon tea, so our wedding breakfast was just that – a traditional combination of finger sandwiches, sausage rolls, cakes and scones, just as we’d enjoyed on our first visit to the venue years ago. We also served typical British fare for our evening food – classic fish and chips, plus chicken parmo, which was a real eye-opener for our Dutch guests!” Entertainment was also important for the couple, who wanted a vibe that was chilled but also lots of fun. “We started with wedding speeches from the father of the bride, groom, best man, and then myself, before my mam hosted an informal pub quiz,” says Gemma. “We then opened up the full suite to reveal the dancefloor and DJ for the evening. Our photobooth was fantastic and wellused throughout the night, and we also hired mini golf and casino tables, which were a big hit.”

SAYING THANKS The couple were in awe of their North East photographer when it came to both her skills and help throughout the day. “Vanessa was invaluable,” says the bride. “She captured some amazing shots and went well beyond the call of duty, trimming loose threads from the bottom of my dress and even removing twigs from my train after we arrived from the church,” says the bride. “Our vicar, Reverend Stewart Ridley, was also fantastic, and led a very personal ceremony for us. My godmother read the poem, A Vow, by Wendy Cope, and Laurens’ mum delivered a Bible reading in Dutch. Our friend even sang Ed Sheeran’s Tenerife Sea as we signed our marriage documents under the Salvation Army flag, which sounded beautiful in the church.” However, there was one person who really stood out for the newlyweds when it came to helping in the run-up to their big day. “We couldn’t have done it without my wonderful mam. She was involved with so much of the preparation, and it was lovely to see all her hard work pay off as she enjoyed the day. Mam, we love you!”

Memorable food to be shared and enjoyed is the heart and soul of Runa Farm with our chefs creating remarkable feasts influenced by their surroundings, using the very best of what’s available from the fields, kitchen garden and other likeminded local producers. Further celebrating the farm’s spectacular setting, we love to show off our cooking skills using Runa’s outdoor courtyard kitchen with rotisserie and grill, as well as the wood fired pizza oven in the kitchen garden, all adding an extra special touch to breezy spring and summer soirees.

Each of the rooms are fabulously unique, designed in harmony with their natural surroundings, but embodying an authentic Ibizan charm. Adding to the experience, many have their own private gardens, secluded terraces and sunken hot tubs, with beautiful County Durham views.

laire and Dan met at Aintree Hospital’s physiotherapy Christmas party in 2013. “Dan was new and had started hanging out with my group of friends,” says Claire. “We gravitated towards each other, but it took a good few hints before he realised I was interested!” After five years together, the couple flew to Zanzibar after a safari trip to Kenya. “Little did I know Dan had been carrying the ring in his pocket for three weeks waiting for the perfect moment to propose,” continues the bride. “One night, as we watched the sun set over Jambiani beach, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. It explained why he’d been acting so shifty all day! I of course said yes, then we went back to the hotel and chilled on our private beachfront patio. We decided not to tell the family that night, keeping it as a special moment between the two of us before sharing our engagement the next day.” The couple picked Newton Hall as their venue, choosing the 31st October, 2021 as a wedding date. Here, Claire tells us more about their big day…

As we weren’t getting mar ried in the summer having a nice indoor space was important. Newton Hall mea nt for a beautiful day, whateve r the weather.

My mum and I attended a macrame workshop a few weeks before lockdown, which inspired us to get crafting when it came to our wedding chair decorations!

We asked our florist for an autumnal wildflower look – and what she created was perfect. My cousin has since set my flowers in resin so I can keep them forever.

We’re proud of ourselves for making our hand made sign! We’re due to move house soon and plan to have it up on the wall.

Instead of favours my mum made party boxes filled with bits and bobs for the tables. They went down a storm and featured a lot on the dancefloor!

We named the tables after our favourite restaurants we’ve eaten in on our travels. We wanted a social and informal wedding breakfast, too, with the food all sharing-style. 38

for its relaxed style. I loved how I chose Madi Lane’s Mara gown in mocha boho style of our venue. the colour was different and fitted in with the

The wedding ceremony itself was so special. The readings we chose were beautifully read and our registrar led the ceremony in such a personal way.

It was difficult for my bridesmaids to try on dresses as my sister lives in Dubai. Luckily, we found some gorgeous velvet-style multiway gowns, which meant they could wear them in whichever way they felt the most beautiful.

As we were getting married at the end of October, I made a bridal denim jacket to help me stay warm during our beach walk.

Is there anything better than

four wheels of cheese for a wed ding cake? It also made for a great picky tea in the evening! 39

We’d originally planned to get married in April, but postponed as we were only allowed six guests. Once we moved the date it felt like a weight had been lifted – and luckily all our vendors were still available.

We hired a band in the evening called Bay

6, who, along with the brass section, really got the dancefloor going.

Prior to the wedding breakfast the guests were taken downstairs so we could have a few moments by ourselves. The team brought us a drink and we had a bit of time to breathe and spend some alone time as husband and wife.

There was a lot of worry in the lead-up to the wedding, especially with the pressure for it to be perfect. However, the Newton Hall team took care of everything, so we could sit back and enjoy the day.

REAL WEDDINGS

THING

Tabby and Dean’s beachside wedding was a relaxed and boho affair Images courtesy of Fusco Media

T

abby met Dean via BlackBerry messenger 12 years ago. “Dean asked me out and when it came to meeting the weather was awful,” remembers the bride. “He had to borrow his brother’s little red Polo to come and get me, and we ended up going for a drive as the snow was too bad to do anything else! We got on like a house on fire, and it was clear to both of us that we’d both found someone special.” After nine years together the couple were in Glasgow for a Pink concert. “Dean has since told me I ruined two proposal attempts while we were there!” continues Tabby. “We were meant to go for lunch, but I decided to meet up with a friend last minute,

which ruined Plan A. Dean then reverted to Plan B, nagging me to get my nails done, as I’d always joked he wasn’t to propose if I hadn’t had them painted! We had dinner booked with his brother and sister-in-law, who were with us for the concert. The trouble is they’re never on time for anything, so I purposely made us late – meaning once I was finally ready no restaurants were open! We had to get McDonald’s for tea, so Plan C resulted in Dean proposing when it was just the two of us in the hotel room!” The couple set their big day for the 14th August, 2021, choosing Barn on the Bay as their wedding venue. Here, Tabby tells us all about their amazing celebration…

43

As soon as we’d met the venue owners, Alison and Phil, we knew it was the right space for us. They were so welcoming and easy-going that we cancelled all the other places we’d lined up to see straight after our appointment.

The tables were named after my horses, some of whom are no longer with us. We went for a wooden rustic theme, which also fitted in well with the barn.

We tried to be plastic-free and support small businesses for our wedding. A colleague’s daughter runs a local candlemaking company, so I asked her to make vegan, cruelty-free, favour-sized candles for favours. The hair and make-up artist made my vision come to life with only a few brief ideas! I wanted to look my best but not totally overdone, with big hair and beach vibes. She really made it happen and I felt amazing on the day.

We wanted a boho vibe when it came to our wedding flowers – and my florist totally nailed it! My bouquet consisted of a mix of roses, rice flower, scabiosa pods, pampas, bunny tails, astilbe, Limonium, Amaranthus and mimosa foliage. We’re both vegans, so chose a semi-naked vegan cake, which was absolutely delicious. Each of the three tiers featured a different flavour: chocolate fudge, lemon and poppy seed, and vanilla with buttercream. It was decorated with peach Bellini macarons, in keeping with the laidback theme.

I’m a big reader, so we settled on piles of books as centrepieces for the tables. They were accessorised with small candles and some gin bottles full of flowers, which worked really well.

I didn’t want anything about the day to feel uptight, so wore a simple, boho-style dress by Wtoo by Watters. I teamed it with white custom Converse and some rose gold jewellery. 44

REAL WEDDINGS

As it was mid-summer Dean and his groomsmen went jacketless, keeping things casual with white shirts, cream trousers, burgundy braces and brown shoes. They also wore flat caps after the ceremony – as they didn’t have much hair between them! Dean’s brother-in-law was responsible for organising the transport, and did a great job with the yellow Mustang! It was amazing and looks fantastic in our wedding photos.

One thing we’ll always remember is our friend, Lynsey, taking over slicing our wedding cake! We started cutting it in the middle, and it was clearly driving her crazy. We took one look at her face and knew she wanted to help, so invited her up to take control!

My bridesmaids wore blush pink flowing dresses, as I wanted something to suit everyone and that they’d all feel happy wearing. My sister was nearly six months pregnant at the time, so it was important she felt cool and comfortable. Because of the pandemic we ended up reducing our guest numbers from 130 to 60. We were just in that period where things had luckily started opening up again. I don’t know how we would have coped with having only a few people present.

Dean’s brother, Wayne, did a great job with his best man’s speech. You could tell he’d put his heart and soul into it. It was hysterical, but you could also hear how proud he was of his brother – and that’s what made it truly special.

We love country music, choosing Luke Combs’ Forever After All as our first dance. The lyrics speak for themselves… “They say nothing lasts forever, but they ain’t seen us together… A love like that makes a man have second thoughts; maybe some things last forever after all”.

We’ve so many memories from our wedding, including time spent on the beach with our photographer getting some brilliant shots. However, our gorgeous niece got some great snaps, too!

Want to wow guests with delicious food and drink on your big day? Our A-Z guide has got you covered A is for ALLERGIES

“When sending out invites there should always be a section for dietary information to send back on a response card,” says Northumberland’s Clara Nicholl Catering. “Ask if your guest is vegetarian, vegan or pescatarian, as well as finding out if they have any allergies or requirements. Even a crumb can cause an issue when you’re intolerant, so I tailor menus for all dietary needs and cook separately for each allergen, dealing with coeliac, gluten, dairy, eggs, nuts, sesame and shellfish issues.” www.claranichollcatering.com

A wedding breakfast doesn’t have to mean a sit-down affair. “Mini food bowls allow your party to socialise and gives a more relaxed feel to the day,” says The Duck House Pantry’s Jack Lapping. “Then there’s canapé choices, with ours including venison Bolognese croquette with spiced tomato chutney, Lake District lamb belly fritter with sauce paloise, and tempura battered halloumi with nori tartare sauce and minted peas.” www.theduckhousepantry.co.uk

E is for ENVIRONMENT Before you commit to a caterer consider their procedures for minimising their carbon footprint. “Food loss and waste is responsible for around 10% of global carbon emissions, contributing more to climate change than the aviation industry,” explains Tyler Kearney from Durham caterer Conscious Kitchen. “Every day in the UK we waste around 280 tonnes of poultry and 4.4 million potatoes, while about a third of fruit and veg gets rejected for being the wrong size or shape. We work with retailers to intercept perfectly good produce and surplus stock destined for landfill, offering conscious catering for weddings to help tackle climate change and environmental damage.” https://refusedurham.org.uk/catering

You want fine dining? You got it! “Sit-down meals are once again back in fashion,” says Dorothy Foreman of Newcastle’s Dotty in the Kitchen. “Fine dining adds to the opulence of your day and makes it more memorable. Planning on an alfresco summer wedding? You’ll need a caterer for that. Pig out (like what we did there?) with WMH Quality Catering, a Hexham business that offers tasty hog roasts, crunchy crackling and more. “Many weddings and events have been catered for throughout the 14 years since our business began,” says WMH’s Sue Bell. “Increasingly many couples are choosing a less formal wedding and the high quality of our local pork, sourced from the Tyne valley, makes for an excellent celebration meal.” www.wmhqualitycatering.com

Remember to have a list of questions to ask any caterer before you sign on the dotted line… “Some of the questions I get asked include if I have a range of crockery and cutlery to choose from,” says Emily Owen from Newcastle’s Emily Botham Catering. “Couples also enquire whether they can have a wedding tasting; as well as catering for dietary requirements, children’s menus, evening food and more. You can even ask what our waiting staff will wear – no questions are off limits!” www.instagram.com/emilybothamltd

Why not ask your caterer to include seasonal produce in your menu? “Wild garlic in spring; elderflower in summer; root vegetables in autumn and clementines in winter… catering with the seasons gives your guests’ tastebuds an experience like no other,” says Amy Jowers from Middlesbrough caterer Gutsy Girl & Co. “Choosing ingredients at their peak ensures maximum flavour, nutritional value and often the best price, with produce coming straight from suppliers soon after harvest. BEAUTY NEWS

FULL BLAST

There are plenty of hair products out there offering volume and texture, but the problem with these is that they’re formulated with typical texturising ingredients that weigh strands down. So, Living Proof decided to step up to the plate and create its new Full Dry Volume & Texture Spay that not only does what it says on the can but also provides flexible hold for even more style-staying power. Perfect for the ultimate bridal updo – use it as your braid aid, messy bun hero or bouncy blowout finisher. £28, available at www.lookfantastic.com

ASK THE EXPERTS

Beauty

Q&A

Our experts answer your beauty dilemmas

GREASE LIGHTNING I’ve really greasy hair and it seems like it never goes for more than a few hours after washes before it looks oily again. I’d love to wear it down on my big day. Do you have any tips on how to improve this? For greasy hair it’s very tempting to wash your hair every day, but this only adds to the problem. Try to wean yourself off the habit by using a quality dry shampoo in between – this is a brilliant way of getting your hair used to being washed less frequently and adds some body in between as well. You can also perhaps wear your hair up on day two until your hair gets used to not having to produce the extra sebum you’re washing away every day. When you do wash it, use a salon-brand shampoo (or the very best you can afford) for body and don’t be afraid to use conditioner, but only use this on mid lengths and ends. That way your roots will have body for longer and the ends will remain shiny and healthy. A quality shampoo will make all the difference by not overloading the hair with cheap silicones and other nasties that can strip your hair, or add a coating. I also use specific high end products on the morning that will eliminate any excess oil and add volume if needed for the style. Remember: treat your hair the way you would a silk shirt or a cashmere jumper – your hair can be your crowning glory and should be treated with TLC! PRODUCT PLACEMENT I don’t wear much make-up normally, but I want to for my wedding. How do I know what colours and products to use?

www.facebook.com/JaneWoodPhotography

Applying your own make-up on your wedding day can be daunting, especially if it’s something you don’t do on a regular basis. A professional make-up artist can help with this in a couple of ways – either by booking them to come to where you are getting ready on the day of your wedding, or by booking a one-to-one tutorial. The first option is more popular with brides, as it really does remove all the pressure. When nerves set in, shaky hands and the pressure to get it ‘just right’ can make for a stressful situation. Your make-up look will be discussed at length at your trial session, taking into account colours that will suit you and your wedding colour scheme, as well as how natural or glam you’d like your look to be. You can also choose to extend this service to your bridesmaids and other members of your bridal party, plus it then becomes part of your morning preparations and a special time to share together. The second option of a tutorial works for brides who are going away for their wedding or those that feel they need to be in full control of their look for the day. Make sure you choose a freelance make-up artist that’s not affiliated to a brand, as they will work with products you already have in your collection and include unbiased recommendations for any items you could still benefit from purchasing. Tips and tuition will then be given for colours and how to make your application long-lasting and flawless. Ashleigh Koefod, Diva Dust | www.divadust.co.uk 69

ORDER OF SERVICE

Which members of the bridal party traditionally travel together? Is there a set order as to who arrives and when? If a couple wanted to stick with tradition, then the order for the wedding party to arrive to the ceremony would be the groom and groomsmen first, approximately 30 minutes before the ceremony. While the best man is keeping the groom calm, the groomsmen and ushers are on hand to greet guests and get them seated. Second to arrive, around five to 10 minutes before the service, are the bridesmaids and flowergirls, along with the mother of the bride. At this point all of the guests and groomsmen should be inside. Last to arrive would then be the bride and her father. While this might be the traditional way, it doesn’t mean you have to follow it! What does tend to stay the same is the groom first and the bride last, but we often have the bride travelling to the ceremony with her bridesmaids, especially if it’s a smaller wedding. It’s refreshing to see a more relaxed approach – after all, the main thing is that everyone enjoys the big day. Paul Campbell | Campbell Wedding Cars https://campbellweddingcars.co.uk

HAIR TODAY…

My husband-to-be wants scalp micropigmentation to hide his hair loss. Are there any dos and don’ts when it comes to this? Scalp micropigmentation is cosmetic tattooing that offers a solution to hair loss by replicating hair follicles, giving the impression of a shaved head or, in some cases of patchy loss, a fuller look. Non-invasive and requiring no downtime, it’s performed over three sessions to build up a range of pigment colours, thereby giving a more natural effect. I’d recommend your partner starts his journey in plenty of time, as it takes between six to nine weeks to see results. In terms of dos and don’ts, avoid chlorinated pools, saunas, steam rooms and tanning beds for 28 days after his final scalp micropigmentation session. I also recommend no scrubbing, shampooing or shaving over the treated area for four to five days after each treatment. If he does any of these things during the healing process, it might remove some of the pigment, which will affect the result of the procedure. EXPERT ADVICE

WRITE ON

WINTER WONDERLAND

We’re getting married next December but don’t celebrate the festivities. How do we prevent our wedding from looking Christmassy without coming across as a pair of Scrooges? An all-white wedding is my absolute dream colour scheme, and if you wanted to go down this route, winter is the perfect time to do just that! With this palette there’ll be no Christmassy greens, purples or reds in sight. If that’s not for you then winter is the perfect time of year to play around with neutral colour schemes, from light and dark greys to creams and Champagne. Furthermore, don’t be afraid of adding a rustic feel. In the world of weddings, we’re all-too-guilty of associating a rustic theme with spring and summer celebrations. In fact, a rustic wedding can be just as charming in the winter. Imagine log cabins in the snow or sitting by a woodburning fire – even the smell of fresh pine trees. Winter isn’t all about Christmas – it’s the most romantic time of the year! Give your guests that cosy, fuzzy feeling we’ve all felt and love by incorporating rustic décor into your big day. What styles and designs are set to be popular in 2023 for wedding stationery? Next year we’ll be seeing richer and brighter colours, along with retro palettes. Darker, deep hues are still popular, such as black, navy, burgundy and emerald, but bright and bold are also edging in. Colour is making a comeback, with fuchsia pinks, bright yellows and turquoise blues. Think statement colours with lots of space, combining minimalism with textures, bold patterns, white ink and of course foil. Calligraphy and script fonts are starting to move out of the way for bolder, simpler and printed typography. This, along with the stronger shades, are creating cleaner and more simple designs. Pocket-folds will always be popular, but layering card stocks and textures alongside simple designs like Z-folds are gaining more popularity. To accompany the simpler invites, couples are also upgrading their envelopes with liners and bold contrasting colours and textures. PLANNING PROCEDURE

My fiancé recently proposed, but I don’t know where to start with the planning! What’s the first thing I need to book and the best things to think about after that? It’s easy to feel overwhelmed with endless options when you first become engaged. That’s why I always recommend you start by reflecting on what matters to you most. The first thing to think about booking is your reception and ceremony venue, as this will set your date and guest list. Next, consider your must-haves – this could be a country backdrop, certain location, or even a late license. Next, think about how you want everything to feel. For example, do you want formal and traditional – or relaxed and modern? However, before you visit any venues, it’s essential to have considered your budget. As a loose rule, your venue and catering can be up to 50% of your overall budget, so having some figures in mind will certainly help focus your search. If you’re still a little stuck it can be a good investment to work with a wedding planner in the areas that you need most support. How much help you need is up to you. Above all, it’s your day, so do it your way! Cat Richardson | Saying I Do | www.sayingido.co.uk 71

Emma Hedley Jewellery Radiance II Fairtrade White Gold and Diamonds, £8,150, www.emmahedley.com THE HISTORY BEHIND WEARING A RING Busy looking for your perfect rings but don’t even know why you’re wearing them in the first place? Ruth Baxter from Hexham’s Sarah Hickey Jewellery reveals all… “Nothing beats the moment you hear those four little words, before you gaze upon the most beautiful engagement ring! But did you know how far back this tradition can be traced? Origins start with the Ancient Egyptians, who presented rings of carved serpents swallowing their tails, signifying eternity. Rings symbolising commitment, love and devotion can be followed throughout history, but it’s only in the 1400s that diamonds started to be incorporated. In the 1940s they became the most popular gemstone, with Hollywood A-listers promoting diamonds for De Beers. And, of course, Marilyn Monroe famously sang, Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend! Sparkling white diamonds are still popular, however there’s a growing demand for something a bit different – step in salt and pepper diamonds! Breathtakingly beautiful and with inclusions that appear both black and white, each is as unique as its wearer.” For more information head over to www.sarahhickey.co.uk

MAKE YOUR OWN WEDDING RINGS! Newcastle based Silverkupe, owned by jewellery designer Emine Thompson, runs a Wedding Band Workshop. Here, Emine discusses ring trends, as well as why for her the personal touch is often best… EMINE ON RING TRENDS “Are you about to choose your wedding bands? Although there are always style trends and advice on metal choices, it’s important to remember that your wedding bands are about you and your partner, including your likes, feelings and life choices. However, it is also a minefield out there when it comes to finding the perfect wedding ring, so sometimes getting inspiration from current trends can help you narrow down the options. Some say matte finish wedding bands are ‘in’ this year – moving away from more traditional shiny

wedding rings. Mixed metals, for example gold and silver, were quite popular in 2021, and it seems they will be on trend still. Whatever you choose, you’ll be wearing your wedding band every day, so it needs to be comfortable and practical, as well as symbolising your love for one another.” EMINE ON HER WORKSHOP “Did you know you can make your wedding bands yourselves? Both you and your partner can attend my Wedding Band Workshop, where you will handmake one another’s rings!

The workshop is designed around you as a couple, with exclusive use of my fully-equipped studio for the day. You’ll be guided throughout all of the stages of making your rings, and no previous experience of jewellery-making or creativity is required. Starting from just £350, the workshop comes complete with a consultation plus a complimentary lunch at The Factory Kitchen in Newcastle.” For more information head over to https://silverkupe.com and click on ‘Wedding Ring Workshop’ 73

FANCY REAL FLOWERS FOR SOMETHING MORE ORGANIC? Moira Angus from Amble-based Moira J Florist has all the answers when it comes to floral dos and don’ts… “Flowers can be just as instrumental as hair pieces and jewellery in terms of wedding accessories. If you’re not big on lots of bling, or if you’re looking for a natural or festival look, you can absolutely bring flowers in to play! From flower crowns and combs, to headbands and even single flowers simply wired in little sprigs, your wedding jewellery can even be made from fresh blooms.

Male room

“In general, these types of wearable flowers have no water source, so once cut and made into whatever accessory they’re going to be, it’s a case of keeping them looking as fresh as possible for as long as possible. This is where your florist will advise you best, as some flowers are much more adept at staying fresh out of water than others. Roses, gypsophilia, berries and thistles should last from the first ‘getting

ready’ photos until well into the evening reception. Whatever you choose, any good florist will make your accessories at the very last minute in order to cut down the amount of time they’re out of water.” For more information head over to www.moiraj.co.uk

Don’t forget about the guy in your life when it comes to making sure he accessorises with style! Bernardo Soares from Newcastle’s Master Debonair is here to advise how it’s done… “In 2022 we’re seeing greater demand for specific colours such as sage and lilac, especially when it comes to accessories like ties and pocket squares. Many couples are leaning more towards the more ‘organic’ themes this year, meaning there’s a focus on colours you would often associate with nature, like ivory and forest greens. This is then reflected in the styles and colours of accessories they’re seeking, with a bounty of requests for floral and paisley patterns. “As always, a pocket watch never goes amiss as a wedding accessory, as they’re great for adding some traditional touches to the groom’s look on the day. They’re also a brilliant choice of gift for the best man, groomsmen or any other gentlemen with heavy involvement in the day, if you’re looking for something to show them your appreciation for joining in your celebration.” For more information head over to www.masterdebonair.com

I feel selfish admitting that I didn’t realise how stressful suit shopping would be for Dave. You

always hear about the bride struggling to find the perfect dress, and there’s so much pressure to get it right, but you never really hear the same for the groom-to-be. When we popped into our local suit store a few weeks ago, it surprised me when Dave said he felt stressed trying to make the right decision as he is usually very calm and collected. He tried on a few different styles and colours, but none left him feeling wowed or in his words: ‘like a suit I’m going to get married in’. He came away from that first appointment feeling confused about what to wear and, if anything, a bit deflated. We decided to leave it for a few weeks and then try again. This time we went to a different store that Dave’s brother had used for his wedding. We visited on a weekday, so it was very quiet, and the team gave Dave their undivided attention. Nothing was too much trouble and, within 30 minutes, Dave had found the perfect suit and was grinning from ear to ear. The team helped reassure him about what style suits his shape and what would look good with our sage green colour scheme. He opted for a three-piece blue suit with a grey waistcoat, brown shoes and a sage green tie and pocket square. As Dave wanted to stand out on the day, we hired the same suit but with a blue waistcoat for the groomsmen and our dads to wear. We’re going back soon to get everyone else fitted, and I’m excited to see them all together on the day.

READY, SET, FILM! We were unsure throughout the planning process if we were going to book a

videographer mainly due to our budget. Dave wasn’t keen on the idea after seeing a few highlight films and with a lot of expense at the time, we decided to leave it. So it surprised me when a few weeks ago Dave said he wanted to book one. He’d seen a friend’s recent wedding video and liked the idea of being able to watch the day back. I’m pleased we decided to go for it, and luckily the supplier that we wanted still had availability. We’ve opted for a half-day package, which includes the ceremony, drinks reception and speeches. Although I would have loved to have had everyone getting ready and our first dance on film, it just made more sense for us financially to go for the smaller package. I’m really excited to see how it will turn out and be able to get all our friends and family around to watch it after the wedding. Check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing my dress alternations, hair and make-up trial and last-minute planning.

can’t believe that this is the penultimate bride’s diary before I walk down the aisle. It’s so strange knowing that in just a few months I will become Mrs Cullen. I know a few of my married friends have chosen to keep their maiden name or hyphenate but for me, taking Dave’s last name was really important. My parents have been together for more than 30 years, but never married. I always hated having a different last name to my mum; so it might sound silly, but I like the idea of our family having one name and I’m really looking forward to sharing that with him (also Twilight is secretly one of my guility pleasures – so the 15-year-old in me is excited to be taking on the Cullen name). In this issue, read all about Dave trying to find the perfect suit and our search for a last-minute videographer.

BRIDE’S DIARY Here are our top tips that we’ve learned during wedding planning:

VENUE

CATERING

❤ Check if you’re allowed confetti. We’re only allowed real petals, and bio-degradable versions aren’t an option. ❤ Find out if you can have sparklers as some venues don’t allow them. ❤ Check whether there are any local taxi companies in the area. If so, pass along the details to your guests.

❤ Ask your supplier if cutlery and linen are included in your quote. ❤ Make sure your supplier caters for all dietary requirements. ❤ Before booking, find out how many options you get to pick for each course.

PHOTOGRAPHER

JEWELLERY

❤ Talk to your photographer about visiting the property before the wedding. We’re planning to meet ours at the venue so he can see where the best photograph opportunities are. ❤ Find out how long your online gallery will be active for. ❤ If you’re feeling anxious near the wedding, get in touch with your photographer. They’ll be able to talk through the day with you to help calm your nerves.

❤ Think about the details on your dress before buying your jewellery. If your gown is heavily beaded, it might be worth choosing simple, understated options. ❤ It can be overwhelming trying to decide what to wear. Talk through options with your wedding party to see what other people suggest. ❤ Pick out key elements of your dress and see if you can complement them with your jewellery.

ALTERNATIONS

CAKE

❤ Before booking your alternations, it’s worth shopping around. I sent ❤ Work out how many guests you’re going to be having and tell your a picture of my dress to five different companies and explained what I cake maker. They will be able to advise how many tiers you need to wanted done, and made my decision based on their quotes. accommodate everyone. ❤ Depending on how intricate your dress is, alterations can take ❤ A lot of cake will be leftover at the end of the night, so purchase cake anywhere from two to eight weeks, so make sure you book your boxes so your guests can take a slice home. appointment early. ❤ Order a sample box so you can try different flavours before making ❤ If you’re nervous about your first fitting, ask one of your bridal party to your final decision. go with you. 77

SOUTH AFRICA

Mantis, a conservation-focused hospitality group with luxury properties located across the globe, has announced the opening of the Founders Railway Carriage at Mantis Founders Lodge in South Africa. Originally built in the 1970s, the carriage is permanently stationed at the top of a hill within Mantis’ private concession. Ideal for honeymoons, the railway carriage features indoor and outdoor dining, lounge areas, and an expansive deck with a private swimming pool. The newly-built Honeymoon Pod was designed to be an escape for couples. Perched above the central lodge, the suite offers unobstructed views of the valley. Romantic services can be arranged including intimate dinners for two and picnics overlooking the waterhole with amazing game drives to view the big five. The railway carriage belongs to conservation pioneer and Mantis founder and chairman, Adrian Gardiner, who tells us: “In 1990 I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to buy a train carriage which I converted into a first-class coach, and I managed to come to an agreement with the railways which enabled me to attach the carriage to the regular passenger services. It has long been my dream to bring the carriage to its very own station. Nobu Hotel and Restaurant is a new property in Santorini that will open its doors in spring 2022. The restaurant houses a gastronomic experience, serving signature Japanese-Peruvian fusion cuisine, and the signature twolevel infinity pool offers unobstructed views of the island’s famed sunset. The luxurious rooms and villas with private pools become a haven, offering panoramic views of the impressive Caldera and the Aegean Sea. The gym, along with the fully-equipped spa room, encapsulates an oasis of wellness. Our cooperation with MonteRock International, a group with an international presence in the business and hospitality sector, guarantees that this project carves a new path in the way boutique hotels are perceived domestically. Hotels will not only be singled out due to brand’s name but also for its design, location, landscape, and service.” Check out www.nobuhotels.com for more information.

A romantic escape Travel editor Melissa Barker reveals why Mauritius is the perfect honeymoon destination

A

fter being stuck in the UK for what feels like a lifetime, I’m sure that I’m not alone in saying that I’d forgotten how exciting travelling could be. I was apprehensive about flying again, but the moment I stepped off the plane in tropical Mauritius and the heat hit me, I felt at ease. Whether you’re after rest and relaxation to recover from the stress of wedding planning or an action-packed adventure, Beachcomber has a resort to suit. With eight properties in Mauritius, each offering something different, the team can tailor-make your holiday across a range of price points. I was lucky enough to visit four of the luxurious hotels during my stay and it was certainly a trip to remember! For those of you who don’t know much about Mauritius, it’s located in the Indian Ocean and is brimming with culture and Instagram-worthy snaps at every turn. Roughly an 11-hour flight from the UK with Air Mauritius, it’s famous for its picturesque beaches, breathtaking lagoons and crystal-clear reefs. The spoken language is English and Mauritian Creole, so you won’t need to worry about translations, and it’s the only known habitat for the now-extinct dodo bird. VICTORIA BEACHCOMBER RESORT & SPA The four-star Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa is situated on the North West coast and is conveniently located between the tourist hub of Grand Baie and the capital city of Port Louis. The sea-facing rooms offer the perfect space to begin your stay in style, with king-sized beds, balconies, walk-in showers, fluffy towels, complimentary toiletries and luxurious baths. Those who want to celebrate married life in privacy can book into the adult-only ‘Victoria for 2’ section. Tranquil and romantic, this area is ideal for those who want to relax in each other’s company while enjoying the on-site amenities.

With access to Mont Choisy Le Golf, an 18-hole golf course located 10 minutes away from the resort, a host of water sports, pools and five restaurants, there’s plenty to see and do during your time here. TROU AUX BICHES BEACHCOMBER The five-star Trou aux Biches Beachcomber is situated on the coast with nearly two kilometres of white sandy beaches and a turquoise lagoon. The villas and beachfront suites have private pools that are built in crescents to create a village-like feel. The villas open out onto large pools, which look glorious first thing in the morning, and the outdoor showers are pure bliss! The resort has large pools in each of the main areas, and with the sea only ever a few minutes away, it’s easy to feel relaxed and stressfree here. With an emphasis on environmental preservation, all the Beachcomber properties are eco-friendly and use environmentally-friendly bottles, reuse water and some have on-site beehives to produce honey. DINAROBIN BEACHCOMBER GOLF RESORT & SPA AND PARADIS BEACHCOMBER GOLF RESORT & SPA Dinarobin Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa is a gem for those wanting to get away from it all. This five-star hotel is in the South-West part of the island and shares facilities with Paradis Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa. Offering access to the 18-hole par 72 golf course, water sports and eight inviting restaurants (four at each hotel), there is a wide range of accommodation to choose from, and some even come with a private chef and a golf buggy so you can travel around in style. The spectacular views of Le Morne mountain are Insta-worthy, and the luscious greenery will make you feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life – perfect for your post-wedding bubble! There is

a shuttle service that runs between the two resorts, which is great fun and gives you the freedom to explore without worrying. WINE AND DINE When I think of the food and drink in Mauritius, I immediately think of rum. This tipple is used in several drinks and traditional dishes on the island. One of the most popular is Ti Punch, a rum cocktail that has a real kick to it, especially if you’re a lightweight like me! The Beachcomber properties have a range of restaurants, each serving different cuisines. Nautil Café at Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa has a large lunch menu accomodating even the fussiest of eaters, while Trou aux Biches Beachcomber has six restaurants offering different cuisines from Asia to Mediterranean. At the Mahiya restaurant, you’ll have the opportunity to wear traditional Indian clothes and watch the chef work through the glass window before tasting the delicious Indian cuisine. Finally, Paradis Beachcomber has an incredible seafood restaurant called Marlin. With options to suit all dietary requirements, the staff will go above and beyond to ensure you have everything you need, and the food is amazing – I’m still thinking about the iced nougat weeks later, delish! EXPLORING THE ISLAND There are lots of fun and interesting places to visit while on your honeymoon with Mautourco. The local market at Port Louis is a great way of seeing how the locals live and what produce is on offer. You can grab some souvenirs for the family and help support the community in the process. The Rhumerie de Chamarel is a rum distillery surrounded by tropical gardens that look gorgeous even in the rain. The restaurant is a must-try, especially the rum baba – a soft dessert, almost like a doughnut, that’s been soaked in rum. Take part in a fascinating tour followed by a tasting with all the drinks available to purchase in the gift shop. If you’re heading down South, take the time to visit Chamarel Falls. It’s the highest waterfall in Mauritius, and there are tortoises, monkeys and more natural wonders nearby.

Trou aux Biches Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa

REST AND RELAXATION The spas at the Beachcomber properties are superb and offer treatments ideal for post-vows R&R. The signature massage includes a sugarcane scrub, which helps remove any dead cells and leaves your skin feeling soft and like new. You can do this together before enjoying a back, leg and neck massage. One of the stand out things that Beachcomber offer is yoga by the beach. A great way to relax and rejuvenate, the teachers are very knowledgeable and will show you breathing techniques and stretches to help with your day-to-day lives when you finally return home. FUN IN THE SUN The activities available across the Beachcomber properties are ideal for those who want to learn a skill or try something new. The expert team will be able to accommodate all abilities and help you try water skiing, windsurfing, sailing, snorkelling, pedal boats, tennis or wakeboarding. As part of the honeymoon package, you’ll receive champagne or sparkling wine in your room and a choice of one Beachcomber experience, such as a massage, a boat cruise, wine tasting, a cooking class, horseback riding or an introduction to scuba diving. I’d recommend the sunset boat cruise, where you enjoy a glass of bubbly while taking in the coastal sights at the most beautiful and romantic time of day. HONEYMOON BLISS If you’re looking for an adventure, a relaxing beach stay or a familymoon, Mauritius is the perfect destination. There’s plenty to see and do around the island, and the Beachcomber resorts will leave you feeling like royalty. I truly loved my time in Mauritius, so much so I don’t think my hubby-to-be will need much convincing to consider our own honeymoon there! Escape to

Sarah Gallivan discovers the great outdoors at Nottinghamshire’s Sherwood Hideaway

E

xperience a luxury escape in the heart of Sherwood Forest at The Sherwood Hideaway at Thorseby. Surrounded by woodland, this selection of luxury lodges and log cabins is an oasis of calm. I stayed with my husband, our two children and dog and it was the perfect opportunity to reconnect after leaving the hustle and bustle of daily life behind us – upon arrival I felt instantly relaxed. Choose to explore and enjoy the range of activities on offer or simply kick back and relax, the choice is yours. CHOOSE YOUR HIDEAWAY With a choice of traditional, rustic and woodland lodges, one, two or three bedrooms and the option of taking your furry friend along to a pet-friendly lodge, there’s something for everyone. We stayed in a Rustic Pet-Friendly lodge and it was gorgeous. Indoors it boasted stylish interiors, modern fixtures and fittings and a cosy log-burner effect fire. We were greeted with a much-welcomed bottle of wine, locally produced fine chocolates and a selection of treats for the pooch – even he didn’t miss out! Outdoors, there’s the added bonus of a private hot tub, barbeque area and decking area looking out into the forest and the lodges are well laid out allowing for ample external space and privacy.

HONEYMOONS

DISCOVER AND EXPLORE Cycling – Take your bikes to explore more of the Thorseby Estate, Sherwood Forest and surrounding areas. Trails are well marked out along road and dirt tracks and they suit all abilities. What’s more, each lodge has its own cycle rack so your bikes can be easily stored. Walking – We took a walk through the estate to Thorseby Hall, the Grade I listed 19th-century country house. The tree-lined paths were easy to follow, and my son and daughter loved delving deep into the woods. The walk took 45 minutes at a steady pace and the coffee and cake in the Thorseby Courtyard, children’s woodland play area and military museum was well worth the stroll.

TIE THE KNOT You can reserve these luxury lodges as accommodation for nuptials at nearby venues or if you’d love a woodland wedding, The Sherwood Hideaway can provide a marquee in which to host your day.

Fishing – If fishing’s your thing, Sherwood Hideaway guests have access to a private members-only fly-fishing lake, approximately 1 mile from the retreat. Falconry – Walk through the woods with the birds of prey or have them visiting the lodge on your own decking area, book a birthday package or take part in a Falconry Day where you’ll learn how to fly and handle hawks, falcons, owls and eagles, as they glide through the treetops. Relaxing – Thorsby Hall Spa is on your doorstep. With its fully equipped gym, indoor pool with jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and range of innovative treatments, why not go and indulge?
