FLORAL FANTASY Florist Charlene Sales at Wisteria Avenue understands how much impact COVID-19 has had and continues to have on NHS workers and wanted to give back to NHS couples planning their weddings. That’s why the business offered brides working for the NHS a free bouquet when they booked the company’s services for their special day. After fantastic feedback, Wisteria Avenue has now extended this offer for 2022 weddings. Charlene says, “After being contacted by a bride last year, she informed me that she was postponing her wedding and during the conversation she mentioned she was a nurse who hasn’t been home in weeks. For larger weddings, the Marquee (200) offers the ultimate blank canvas with glorious views over the River Tweed and Union Chain Bridge, while the Gardens (200) allows guests to enjoy the tranquillity and beauty of the venue. All of these spaces, except for the Coble Boat, can be used for a reception.

exchange vows in The Reception Hall with a beautiful staircase and incredible views, for 50 guests in the day and 100 in the evening? For a more intimate wedding, the stone arched Pele Tower Cellar can accommodate 30 guests for the ceremony and 20 for a wedding breakfast. In the summer (weather permitting), the Horseshoe Bar situated in the garden can be used for outdoor receptions. Couples interested in a civil marriage must contact and book registrars themselves; Clennell Hall cannot perform this task and registrar fees are not included in the venue hire. When nearlyweds book the hall for their special day, they’ll receive wedding night accommodation and full use of the venue if all 10 guest rooms are booked for a large wedding. 21

K

amron and Ami first met in 2011 during a placement working for Xerox in Greater London. She says, “I was attracted to Kam’s cool hair, his wit and intelligence. We just clicked as soon as we met and I think we’ve always known we’d found the one.” In September 2019 at Dancing Ledge in Swanage, Dorset, Kamron asked Ami to marry him. She says, “I came back from a half-day at work and Kam had made us a fancy picnic to take down to the coast – I should have guessed something was up at that point! During the picnic, he asked me to look over the cliff’s edge (slightly concerning) and took the ring out of his backpack and popped the question!” Kamron knew the exact ring he wanted for Ami, one the couple had picked out as a ‘joke’ eight years previously. His plans were thwarted when he finally came to buy it and found it had been discontinued. After searching numerous retailers for it, Ernest Jones came to the rescue and had its factory in Germany make one especially – how romantic!

SETTING THE SCENE When it came to planning the wedding, the couple wanted to make sure that everyone enjoyed themselves and that it was a weekend to remember. What venue would be better to hold such a special day than Ellingham Hall? The bride says, “Walking into the venue for the first time felt like a warm hug on a dark, rainy afternoon. The roaring fires, ambient lighting and the amazing staff did not compare to any other venue we had visited.” Everything about the hall just felt so right for their day; even the red leaves outside would be perfect for their autumn wedding. One week before the wedding day, the government announced that the country was going into another lockdown. Ami says, “We were gutted that the day couldn’t go ahead after already replanning our wedding three times to meet the various restrictions. But then we thought to ourselves, could we move the entire wedding to take place in just three days times before the lockdown started?” The couple raced against time to call guests, suppliers, the venue and registrars and managed to bring the whole wedding forward just in time. She adds, “All of our suppliers were so flexible, every single one wanted to make the day happen. We’re so grateful to everyone involved for rallying together and giving us the best day of our lives.” The decorations on the day looked marvellous! A massive floral arrangement consisting of white hydrangea, roses and a mix of foliage looked perfect in front of the fireplace in The Chapel. The couple also placed a similar arrangement at the bottom of the hall’s main stairwell. The table plan changed last minute to one long banquet table because of the dramatically reduced guest list. This set up was more appropriate for the intimate day and represented two families coming together. The centrepieces consisted of three tall gold stands with fresh white flowers and foliage plus an assortment of pillar candles beneath. Each guest was given two favours; the first was Iranian-style sugared almonds paired with pale blue English ones to represent the couple’s cultures. These were placed in boxes with wrap-around labels to double up as place names. The second favour was also given to all the guests who were unable to attend the wedding; this was a golden bee pin badge purchased from Macmillan Cancer Support – a cause very close to Kamron and Ami’s hearts. The bride opted for a natural loose hand-tied bouquet with white roses, lisianthus, hydrangea and eucalyptus. She also wore a flower crown of foliage and spray roses. As the couple are both vegetarians, they picked mushroom and shallot skewers with pineapple salsa to start, a Thai green curry for main and a vegan saffron cheesecake for dessert. A Spanish grazing board-style buffet with cheeses, nuts, olives, bread and crackers was served in the evening and guests could help themselves to sweets, chocolates, popcorn and not forgetting the cake! Ami says, “Our cakes had triple chocolate, lemon and raspberry ripple layers with the most divine white chocolate flavoured 23 

icing. My nana poked it because she didn’t believe it was real as it was decorated so perfectly by Dawn at The Master Cakesmith. We topped it off with a custom-made silhouette topper from Tilly Bean Bespoke on Etsy which featured a groom, bride and our much-adored cat, Pepper.”

LOOKING THE PART When it came to finding the perfect dress, the bride-to-be tried an Elara dress by Pronovias and fell in love with the design. She says, “I wanted a dress with a low back while accentuating my waist and that’s exactly what I found. I love that the gown was a bit different with the sheer top and intricate vine details instead of lace.” To finish off the look, a cathedral-length veil was added as well as diamond and opal earrings (both the couple’s birthstones) and Ami’s late grandma’s Victorian-style ring as her something old. Ami says, “My something borrowed was my mum’s perfume, Chanel Chance Eau Fraiche, that I always use when I stay with my parents. She adds, “When I saw myself on the day, I felt so relieved that everything had finally come together despite a global pandemic and the various hurdles thrown our way.” The groom looked dapper in a navy wool three-piece suit from Moss Bros which matched the groomsmen, he stood out with a different buttonhole. Initially, the best man couldn’t attend due to the government limit of 15 people, but a late space opened up just before the wedding and he ended up wearing his own suit which was a close match to the others. The bride ended up only having one bridesmaid (Kam’s sister), but she looked beautiful in a dusty blue dress with a lace bodice, a pleated maxi skirt and white roses woven into her hair.

TIME TO CELEBRATE The couple decided on a fantastic string trio, Aurora Strings, who played in The Mezzanine which is just above The Chapel. The bride says, “When the bridesmaid started walking down the aisle, everyone was so surprised to turn around and find out it was live strings playing! They played throughout the signing of the register and then moved into the entrance hall for the drink’s reception. We could not rave about their music more – it was so enchanting!”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS The day was full of so many beautiful moments and the first dance stands out to the couple who danced outside surrounded by loved ones to Night Drive by Jimmy Eat World. Halfway through the music switched to Toploader’s Dancing in the Moonlight. During this special moment, the venue’s staff were sneakily whipping up some hot chocolates with marshmallows in the kitchen for everyone! The couple surprised their parents with a Mr & Mrs game which ended up being hilarious. Ami says, “My parents won the tie-breaker and we still can’t live it down – their victory dance was a sight to behold and was caught on camera!” She adds, “Our photographer and videographer had never worked together before, but they formed the perfect duo. Even when we thought our photographer was taking a well-deserved five-minute break, he set up a surprise photo shoot in another amazing spot. We couldn’t have been more delighted with the outcome in the form of the most stunning photographs and tear-jerking video.” 24

My aim is to capture your day naturally with my contemporary, creative and unobtrusive style. Telling your story in pictures and documenting all the special details. The laughter, the tears and the spontaneous moments and of course those dreamy forever portraits. Packages can be tailored to fit round your day and your budget.

“We could not have found a better photographer for our special day at the Coniston Hotel - all we wanted were nice relaxed, candid photos of our family and friends enjoying the day and she absolutely nailed it. She made us feel so at ease even when doing the posed couple shots! If you want stunning natural photographs then look no further!”

ometimes the best things in life are unexpected and can take you completely by surprise, that’s what happened when Joanne and Gary first laid eyes on each other at work. Gary’s down to earth and fun personality instantly caught Joanne’s attention, they hit it off right away and both shared the same sense of humour while not taking anything too seriously. On a Sunday evening back in 2019, the pair settled down to watch some TV when Gary asked Joanne to marry him. She says, “The idea of being proposed to anywhere else would have been my worst nightmare, especially in front of people, so being at home was perfect! It was totally unexpected and I said yes!” Here Joanne shares details about their special day… 29 

A

perfect DAY Lianne and Tom’s rustic-themed wedding day was quirky, intimate and merry Images courtesy of DJM Photography

L

ianne and Tom’s story started during school after speaking to each other on MSN, after a few years the pair became a couple. Lianne says, “I’ve never met anyone who makes me this happy and I couldn’t see myself with anyone else. Often people say that when you meet someone young, you usually outgrow each other but we’re the polar opposite – we share so many life goals and values.” On August 27th 2018, Tom proposed during a family holiday to Carrick on the coast of Scotland. Lianne says, “We went for our usual night-time walk along a small rocky pier and he was asking me ridiculous questions about what I could see in the distance… nothing it was pitch black! I then turned around to find him on one knee and the ring balanced on a rock. It was a surprise, but I did have an idea he was up to something as he kept humming Here Comes The Bride during the week which he doesn’t even recall doing – obviously it was subconscious nerves!” Here Lianne shares details about their day… 37 

Our favours were small wooden logs with names etched into them to double up as place names. I turned ours into fridge magnets, some guests use them as coasters and another guest stapled it to their garden bench.

We used each table number to represent the years we had been together, and had a photograph of us together from that year to go with our centrepieces.

We hired 5ft lights that spelled out ‘The Crows’ to be displayed during and after the ceremony. My favourite flowers are roses and baby’s breath as Tom has bought these for me many times over the years. They were always going to be incorporated into the arrangements – my florist was amazing and nothing was too much for her.

The first thing I saw at a wedding fair was a VW Campervan and knew it was perfect for Tom. On the day of the wedding, it was decorated with a simple ribbon over the bonnet. 38

We struggled to find a venue until we found As You Like It, which was in the city centre and was easily accessible for our friends and family. It was the only place we visited and ended up booking it on the same day!

REAL WEDDINGS

A part that stood out on the day was walking down the aisle with my mum. I remember her telling me to slow down but I was so excited to get to Tom who was nervously gazing back at me.

We decided on a simple three-tiered cake with ivory-coloured icing and a wooden Mr and Mrs topper – my florist also supplied loose flowers to decorate it with.

When we went outside with our photographer Darren for our couple portraits my veil blew off; he managed to snap several photographs of Tom in full sprint wrestling the wind – I was impressed Tom managed to catch it!

I originally wanted bright red gowns for the bridesmaid dresses but a berry-red suited the venue much better. The girls tried on different styles and ended up picking the same which was a pleasant surprise!

I felt the most confident I have ever felt in my life, the dress, hair and make-up was totally me! My dress was called Amore by Anna Sorrano; I added an Amixi Alexandra beaded top and matching veil all in an ivory hue.

Tom was a nervous wreck until the evening reception where he could have a few pints to calm his nerves.

Tom was in charge of suits and chose a dark, olive-green pinstripe suit from Slater Menswear and accessorised all the boys with burgundy ties and hankerchiefs, brown shoes and pocket watches. 39 

We had a DJ for entertainment and hired a photo booth that came with props and was managed all night by the company’s staff. They put together an album with copies of all the photos took that night and asked guests to write messages next to their photos – it was such a lovely and personal thing to get.

Our top tip from the day would be to not get stressed about anything. People always ask me if I would have changed anything and my answer is no, everything went without a glitch and it was perfect!

I usually hate being centre of attention and can be rather shy, but I remember waking up at 5 am and knew I was ready for the day!

The best man made the most incredible speech, a screen came down from the ceiling and we were both baffled about what was going to happen next. On the screen, videos started playing from friends who couldn’t make it, our local takeaway shops, our favourite nightclubs and even a few celebrities – we were shocked!

REGIONAL SHOOT

O

n a blustery morning in October, local suppliers got together to produce a stunning shoot to provide couples with plenty of inspiration for planning their wedding. Barn on the Bay provided a beautiful backdrop and has access to a range of outdoor spaces including the paddock leading into the confetti field, a rustic barn and a beautifully lit farmyard area next to the veranda – there’s also the venue’s very own stretch of beach! The suppliers settled on an autumnal beach theme with a copper colour scheme reflecting shades that can be found in weathered cliff faces or on seabattered rocks. Ellen Davies at LND Events says, “After speaking to Alison who’s the owner of Barn on the Bay via Instagram, we joined forces with other local companies to show off the venue to potential customers and demonstrate what we could do for them as a team. “I’ve always had Melissa Beattie Photography in mind to capture the day, her fine art style was perfect for my vision. Melissa is a team player and not only produced timeless, romantic images but also helped assist behind the scenes.” The Trove brought the whole look together with draped tablecloths placed on a trestle table with dove-grey porcelain plates, antique cutlery, crystal glassware and white gauze napkins. The centrepieces consisted of shells and off-white/grey dinner candles surrounding incredible florals by Flori & Fern. Another Loop provided muscle shells with calligraphy on for place names as well as menus to match the tones used on the tables and romantic quotes written on wooden boards. The three-tiered cake by The Master Cakesmith looked outstanding with white icing, pearls and some shells which highlighted the theme perfectly. The model was given two looks on the day to capture the interior of the venue and the stunning beach where couples can have a ceremony if desired. Y.A.P. Bridal provided two gorgeous gowns; a Madi Lane Bridal Avery dress looked great inside the barn with beautiful make-up created using bronze/copper shades by MUBYLEIGH and modern-style jewellery by Sarah Vuong Bridal Jewellery. The second dress worn on the beach was an Evie Young Bridal Chance dress. The model’s hair was changed to an up do with a sweeping fringe, slightly bolder make-up and a change in jewelled pieces.

PLANNING FLOWERS SOS

PLANNING SOS Top tips for the perfect wedding

NICOLA ROBINSON AT NICKYNOO QUIRKY MOBILE BARS When it comes to picking a mobile bar for your wedding day, make sure your venue is happy for you to bring one. Some places stipulate that you need to use their on-site bar. Here are some questions to think about… http://thetwinsweddings.co.uk

❤ Does the venue have an alcohol license? If they don’t, will your bar apply for a temporary event notice which is a legal requirement, and will they charge you for this service? ❤ What is included in the hire cost? Do you need to pay extra for glass hire or staff, some bars may charge extra to add additional options such as cocktails to the bar menu.

❤ What selection of drinks are available for your guests to purchase? Some companies may offer a limited selection, think about what your guests will tend to drink. If the bar doesn’t stock this, can it be sourced for your wedding? ❤ What is the price of the drinks, and do they offer standard and premium options? ❤ What does the bar look like and will it complement your theme? For example, if you have a vintage vibe do you want a neon flashing bar?

GEMMA JAY AT NORTH EAST CELEBRANT Remember this is your day, so sit down with your partner and discuss any priorities as it’s easy to get swept along with all the fantastic services on offer. Work out the key elements that you want to be included in the day. Do you really have your heart set on a certain venue or the photographer? Are the outfits more important to you than the cake? List everything in priority order and work through it to help shape the day, in years to come you can look back satisfied that the wedding was how you wanted it to be. Explore the option of a celebrant even if you decide against it, at least you’ll have a conversation to see whether a tailor-made ceremony is something that will fit your style and vision better. I’m more than happy to chat ideas through before you decide if it’s right for your day. Make sure to regularly talk to your suppliers as communication is key, particularly if you are thinking of making changes or if you have any issue and would like their input. Here at North East Celebrant, we’ve seen many scenarios over the years and can possibly offer a solution. Get organised or at least dedicate a place to put all your

❤ What additional services do they offer? This could be welcome drinks, toast drinks, table wine, glass hire and is this a competitive price? ❤ Read through the company’s terms and conditions, check how long they need to set up and de-rig, especially if you need to vacate the venue by a specific time. ❤ Will the business only clean up the bar area or dispose of bottles in the main area as well? You will need to check if the venue requires rubbish to be taken away or can it be left on site for disposal – this is something you’ll need to inform the bar company of. Check out: www.nickynoo.co.uk wedding-related information, that way it reduces the chances of panicking when you can’t find that one bit of paper or contract that you put in a ‘safe place’. Planning a wedding can seem a daunting task for most people, you want to make the day perfect but have never done anything like this before. Follow my advice to ensure a stress-free experience. It’s important to start planning early as organisation is key! Make a list of top ideas you have seen while researching and keep a wedding album on your phone of anything you like. After booking a venue and securing a date, start to confirm other suppliers such as the photographer, florist, hairstylist and make-up artist early on. Some suppliers could be booked up a couple of years in advance for weekend dates, while mid-week is usually quieter for weddings. Choose experienced suppliers who will help with any questions and will know the ins and outs of weddings or can even point you in the right direction of someone to help you – with experience comes plenty of contacts! If you have no idea where to start looking for suppliers, start with your local wedding magazines and social media. You can look through its page and find different suppliers recommend and those businesses tagged in photos. If your chosen company aren’t available, don’t be afraid to ask for recommendations – it’s a good way to find the best suppliers who are reliable. Once everything is booked, you can relax knowing that your wedding will be left in the hands of the professionals. Check out: www.facebook.com/bridalhairbycheryl

After the proposal and the happy tears, what happens next? My advice would be to allow yourselves time to enjoy your engagement. At the start of the planning experience, pick a budget and stick to it. Think about the guest list and different sizes and cost of each venue. Research is key when it comes to finding the perfect space, does the venue provide catering, have mobility access and does it provide accommodation for yourself and guests? Next decide upon the bridal party, bestman, maidof-honour, bridesmaids and invite them to take on this role. Remember to hire an officiant and complete the legal paperwork associated with your intention to marry. Research suppliers such as the photographers, bands and DJs by reading reviews to get a true reflection of the service they offer. One of the most special moments for brides is selecting the wedding attire. Suits for the men, bridesmaid dresses and most importantly the gown they’ve dreamt about since being a small child. Allow 12 months to get to your desired shape and find your dream dress. Try different colours, styles and silhouettes while taking advice from the consultant. The most important pieces of advice I could offer is to do your research, prioritise your wants and enjoy the planning. Check out: www.simplywedbridal.co.uk

PLANNING FLOWERS SOS GRAEMA VENUS AT STICKY SPONGE The wedding cake is one of the important items to help make your big day extra special and will be pictured and remembered for years to come. It doesn’t matter whether you’re getting married in a grand venue with hundreds of guests or celebrating in a cosy pub with friends. We make sure choosing your cake is a beautiful experience that

complements your day, its theme and venue. But more importantly, remember it’s your wedding and the two people that the cake should be designed for is you. The cost of your cake will depend on the design and the number of servings. A lot of skill and time goes into the construction of cakes, and some design elements can take several days (sometimes months) to create. Many cake designers will copy other designs but fail to have the skill and talent to recreate what you want to the same standard. Before ordering, make sure you have an approximate idea of the number of guests that you’re inviting so you can choose the right size, don’t wait for them all to RSVP before ordering. Your final wedding cake price depends on final design requirements. This depends on the amount of work and materials involved in creating the cake. Our advice is to be honest about your budget so your cake designer knows what’s possible and what would work best. We always advise that we deliver your cake for you where possible and charge a small amount to cover the costs. The cakes are delicate fragile items and one of the most stressful parts of this job can be the delivery. It is our responsibility to get your cake to your venue safe and sound and make sure it is set up correctly. Your wedding is about you both, the love that you share, and celebrating that with your guests. Flavours, textures, and aromas provide experiences that linger, evoke memories, and create new ones. You don’t have to go with trends, choose the flavours and a design that you love. Check out: www.stickysponge.co.uk

With more than 25 years’ experience in the wedding industry and 550 weddings arranged, I’ve built a fantastic reputation in the North East and beyond. Here are some of my top tips to help couples navigate through the wedding planning process. As soon as you book your venue start to look around for suppliers such as florists, cake makers, photographers and more as they can get booked up years in advance. Even if couples don’t know all the wedding details yet, they can still book companies as only basic information is needed at this time. I’ve seen many couples disappointed because they didn’t realise this and have missed out on their desired businesses. Make sure to visit wedding fairs as suppliers and venues often have special offers available during them. Always confirm special deals before booking a company; this includes discounts and full descriptions of what you have agreed with prices in writing. This is important, especially if your wedding is two to three years away. Try and view your venue the same time of year as your wedding; this will help you visualise the day and see how the gardens will look, which areas need more decoration and where outside drinks receptions could be held. Make sure to double-check everything; this is where a good planner will be invaluable as they will contact all suppliers to ensure that they have the right timings, names, delivery addresses, quantities, sizes, special request information and more. Always get a mobile/emergency number for businesses in case of any difficulties. Then you’re ready to relax and trust that you’ve done everything possible to make your day fantastic. What’s more, the blend of rosemary and peppermint essential oils stimulates blood flow to the hair follicles maximising hair growth potential. Priced at £36 from www.wearecentred.com

Finishing Touch Flawless Dermaplane Glo, £19.99 Available at Argos, ASDA, Boots, Tesco and Wilko Dermaplaning as a salon treatment has been around for a while, and quite frankly the very thought of it has always terrified me. So, I wasn’t too sure what to expect of this tool. I did my research on the benefits, genned up on this super-useful tutorial and I was ready to go. Wow, I don’t know what I was so worried about. It was easy to do and took no more than five to 10 minutes. Probably 10 for me as I got a bit addicted and couldn’t stop – I don’t recommend that though. It’s an incredibly satisfying process seeing all of that peach fuzz and dead skin disappear. I couldn’t believe how smooth my skin felt afterwards. Leave your skin to rest for around eight hours afterwards before you apply any skin products or make-up as it’s quite an intense exfoliation process, then repeat every two to four weeks. I can’t wait to see how regular use improves my skin further. I’m definitely sold on dermaplaning!

https://youtu.be/S2b5jX4yNyA

Kevyn Aucoin Kaleidochrome All-Over Highlight Palette, £39 www.lookfantastic.com This multi-tasking palette offers four shades of highlight suitable whatever the look you’re going for. I particularly loved the darker rose Space Party, which I used on my cheeks over my blusher for a radiant glow and Super Cosmic, which I added to the arch of my eyebrows and very top of my cheekbones. It really brought a multi-dimensional look to my make-up that can be tailored for day or night.

Eve Lom Radiance Transforming Mask, £65 www.spacenk.com I was surprised to find a balm texture when I first removed the lid, so was interested to see how this would go. Using the supplied spatula to remove the required amount of mask from the tub, I opted for generous dollop and began to massage it into my face as instructed. Its thick formula felt incredibly luxurious and I could already tell it was going to provide a pampering experience. I was particularly delighted by the advice to leave for a minimum of 30 minutes, which gave me an excuse to relax for a decent amount of time – none of this 10 minutes rubbish! When it was time to remove with warm water, I was delighted to find my skin looking renewed, beautifully supple and glowing.

PUT A SPRING IN YOUR STEP CWM’s beauty editor puts this season’s best buys to the test creating a head-to-toe makeover session you’ll love

Sculpted by Aimee Connolly Lip Duo, £18 www.sculptedbyaimee.com I’m a huge advocate for lip liners and their myriad benefits, but I do struggle to know which shade goes with which lipstick, find the two become separated and will admit to resenting buying both in the first place. So, these Lip Duos are a blessing! Not only are they perfectly colour matched offering you two products for the average price of one, but if your make-up bag is already packed, like mine, they offer a smart solution. I tried Mauve Match, which is a versatile neutral shade, ideal for everyday wear.

No Secrets One Body Jelly, £49 www.nosecretsbeauty.com This jellied body oil smells absolutely incredible with No Secrets’ signature blend of essential oils – bergamot, juniper, petitgrain, eucalyptus and lavender. Less messy than a traditional body oil, you just need to massage a little in at a time for smooth and beautifully soft skin. Plus, the amazing fragrance lasts. Perfect for a pamper. 68

Margaret Dabbs Cracked Heel Treatment, £18 www.margaretdabbs.co.uk Let me start by confessing that my heels are horrendous, always cracked and dry and nothing I try makes a difference. Until now that is. This product was well and truly put through its paces by my horrible hooves and the results were instant. After just one application the sandpaper effect was gone and with continued use it really is a miracle worker. It’s my new beauty essential, and I can’t wait to get the flip flops on!

EXPERT ADVICE

Q&A Our experts give their advice to help you look your big-day best

FASHION ICON

https://bianco-evento.com

I have a ’60s-themed wedding and I’m trying to find a gown to match the style of the day. What would you suggest? Susanne says: The 1960s were known for breaking many fashion norms and traditions. From the mini-skirts debut, the stunning floral and silk designs, to the mod-inspired styles – the ’60s has a lot to offer. Bridal fashion was no exception, and the whims of the ’60s fashionstyles touched even the more traditional brides. Just take a look at Princess Margaret’s dress being so much simpler and more streamlined than her sister’s, as a royal endorsement of the changes in fashion. My advice for a ’60s-themed wedding would be to take inspiration from Jacqueline Kennedy and Audrey Hepburn beautiful silky sheened dresses, elegant necklines and lots of detail. The dress shown is a simple A-line dress, whilst still oozing so much floral detail as a nod to the flower power of the era. The dress is made of highquality jacquard with contrast bateau, rolled collar neckline and belt detail. This stunning dress combines so many retro fashion elements, whilst remaining elegant and bridal – you really can’t go wrong with this one. Susanne Shah | Rosa Bridal Boutique | www.rosabridalboutique.co.uk

LOVE IS IN THE HAIR

I have an off-the-shoulder gown for my wedding, but I’m not sure what to do with my hair. What styles do you suggest? Alice says: Before anything else, think about the dress itself in terms of the style, material and fit. Perhaps you have opted for a clean-cut, understated dress with little detail? Maybe your dress has more of a relaxed boho vibe, or you’ve gone all-out with lots of sparkles, a huge underskirt and train. Next think about your hair type, length and thickness. Whilst your stylist may be able to work wonders and things like hair extensions can be used to add length and volume, you need to be realistic about your expectations and how comfortable you will feel. Do you plan to wear any jewellery, hair accessories or a veil? If so, these things all have an impact on the final result. Just because you have chosen an off-the-shoulder dress may not necessarily mean you want to bare too much flesh. However, if you are comfortable with your neck on show, then a relaxed, romantic bridal bun with soft cascading curls could be a good option. Alternatively, to help break up the space between your dress and neck, a curly twisted half-up half-down-style or some glamorous Hollywood waves may be more fitting. If your dress has more of a boho-style, have your hair curly and down with a flower crown. A polished bridal ponytail or chignon with a little volume

and texture can work well teamed with a simple, clean-cut and understated dress. Alice Quinn | Wonderland Hair & Beauty By Alice www.wonderlandhairandbeautybyalice.com 69

amed for her flawless skin, popular TV personality Jess Wright is a busy, gogetting woman. Whether she’s on a shoot, busy filming, hosting her podcast – Girls #NoFilter, planning next year’s wedding to William Lee-Kemp, or hard at work in her role as Crystal Clear’s first celebrity ambassador, her perfect skin is the envy of all. Keen to know her secret, CWM beauty editor Kelly Andrews sat down for a chat with the reality star to get the lowdown, just for you! Jess, thanks for making time in your hectic schedule to talk to us and huge congratulations on your forthcoming wedding. How do you imagine your big day? Thank you! I imagine it to be beautiful, full of love and hopefully classy. As long as I’m surrounded by my family and loved ones, that’s the most important thing. How did William propose? He did it on the balcony of our beautiful hotel room in the mountains in Courchevel. It was both spectacular and amazing. What’s your vision for your bridal beauty look? Good skin is the perfect base so I’ll be prepping with some fab Crystal Clear COMCIT facials in the run up to the big day for sure. Then I’ll want my make-up to be slightly natural, with that dewy glow and some wispy lashes.

Absolutely

FLAWLESS

Our beauty editor caught up with Jess Wright to discuss wedding plans and just how she achieves that perfect complexion

70

Do you have a picture of your dream dress in mind? I’ve tried on so many dresses, but I definitely have a vision. I think I’ve chosen the one. Completely understand you playing the cards close to your chest there! We look forward to the surprise. As the voice of experience, can you share with us your top wedding planning tips? I’d say, make sure you have a good wedding planner. Also, do the guest list, but don’t send the invitations out until later, as it’ll definitely alter as time goes on! So many couples have been forced to re-plan their weddings as a result of the pandemic. Have you encountered any such difficulties and do you have any advice for other couples facing the same challenges? We’ve considered moving the wedding, but

BEAUTY INTERVIEW

at the minute it’s a day-by-day update, so we’re going to make the final decision in the spring. If you’re not time restricted, I’d say move yours to 2022 if possible, so you can really enjoy the process rather than struggling through the pandemic. Leading a jam-packed celebrity lifestyle while planning a wedding must make you an extremely busy lady! How do you juggle it all while still looking fabulous and flawless? I love keeping busy, so I was really excited about planning a wedding on top of my already hectic lifestyle, but unfortunately

that hasn’t happened as the pandemic and various lockdowns have slowed me down. It has meant though that I’ve had plenty of time on my hands to plan the wedding! What are your make-up bag must haves? I love Chanel foundation for a quick matte bronze. Also, a good eyebrow pencil and a nourishing lip balm. I always keep the Crystal Clear Beach Glow Tanning Drops in my kit too. They’re amazing for adding a subtle glow to your skin and you can dial it up depending on the depth of colour you’re looking for. Tell us why you love Crystal Clear. I’m so excited to be chosen as the first ever ambassador for Crystal Clear Skincare. Their products are my holy grail and having tried so many different brands over the years, I just love the results you get with Crystal Clear, so it’s amazing to be working with the brand. The range is extensive with something to suit all skin types and concerns. The Ionic Sonic2 Microdermabrasion Kit is my ultimate secret to Insta-ready, super-cleansed skin. I’m also a big fan of the salon treatments, especially the COMCIT facial. It really is the most fantastic treatment for softer, firmer and hydrated skin.

Which is your favourite product from the range? I’d have to say The Lifting Wand, one of the brand’s beauty tools. It comes with its pharma-grade product, which is packed with hyaluronic acid. You use it for 60 seconds every day and it gives you deep hydration, depuffs eyes, plumps skin and lifts it. It’s really easy to use and fits into your daily routine. For a quick skin fix, I’d also highly recommend the 10 Minute Glow Mask, which literally does what it says on the tin and gives you glowing skin in just 10 minutes. It’s incredibly satisfying to peel off as well! What’s your number one beauty tip for brides? Focus on your skin. Glowing skin is the best thing on your wedding day in terms of beauty, so do whatever you need to make it feel its best. Finally, what’s next for you? Hopefully my wedding! Also, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, the musical I’m in. This is all dependant on the pandemic though. Sending my love to everyone at this time. Here at Above the Clouds Wedding Stationery, our favourite pieces to work on are bespoke designs that express a couple’s personalities and interests while giving a personal touch to the items. Stationery should provide a general feel of the wedding. Our top tip would be to order more stationery than you need, even if that’s just five extra pieces. No matter how many times you

go through your guest list, there’s always the odd person who needs to be added. Printers also tend to charge more for short runs, so just a few extra could end up costing less than you think. Most of your guests will be couples, so we generally recommend you half the guest list when figuring out how many invitations to order and add five to ten more for the day and then evening invitations to cover any extra individuals. LOOKING YOUR BEST I have hooded eyes but want my eye make-up to still be noticeable, what would you suggest? Hooded eyes are just as beautiful as any other eye shape and just requires a different approach when applying make-up. I have hooded eyes and understand the struggles you may be experiencing. Here are a few simple tips to enhance your eye shape. The secret is to create an illusion of space as most of the eyelid will not be seen. By applying your crease shade slightly higher than your actual eye crease, you’ll make the lid seem larger and less hooded. An easy way to achieve this would be to look ahead in a mirror and place your shadow on the part of your eye you can see, which is just above your natural eye socket. Add lighter shades to highlight the inner corner and a third of your eyelid and highlighting under your brow also helps. I’d recommend only using eyeliner on the outer two-thirds of the bottom lashline, don’t take it to the inner corner as this will close the eye and make it appear smaller. A common problem faced with hooded eyes is creasing; this can be combated by laying down a little powder before applying eyeshadow or using an eye primer to provide a smooth and primed surface. My favourite way to solve this issue is by using cream-based shadows which are often waterproof. Apply the product with a brush and then blend the powder eyeshadow over the top – this way nothing will separate or crease! THE WOW FACTOR

BIG-DAY BEAUTIFUL

I can’t wait to find the perfect wedding gown, what do I need to keep in mind during my first appointment? It’s important to keep an open mind when looking for a wedding dress; our stylists will start by getting to know all about you, the special day and any desired styles before pulling together the perfect gowns to try on at our studio. Even though you may have particular styles in mind, we will often show you a wildcard that we think would be perfect for you – nine times out of 10 this will end up being your dream dress. It’s essential to trust the stylists, our team has had more than 10 years’ experience and we know our collections inside out – put your faith in us and be ready to fall in love! I’m going to get really emotional on my wedding day, how can I stop my make-up from smudging? There are some incredible waterproof and transfer-resistant products out there to ensure your make-up will stay in place all day. For foundation, I highly recommend the Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Foundation for a gorgeous lit-from-within glow. Some other great options are Delilah Alibi foundations and MAC Cosmetics Pro Longwear Nourishing Waterproof Foundation. When it comes to eye make-up, it goes without saying that waterproof mascara is a must. If you’re going for false lashes, I recommend individuals lashes rather than strips as no one wants the corner of the lashline lifting on their wedding day. You need Delilah Cosmetics Gel Line if you’re looking for some bulletproof eyeliner; it’s a firm staple in my bridal kit. Finish off the look with a mist of setting spray to lock everything in place. Charlotte Tilbury’s Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray is not only incredible at making sure everything stays in place, but it also looks beautiful on your dressing table – what’s not to love! FLORAL FANTASY What do I need to keep in mind before ordering my wedding flowers? Choosing your flowers is an exciting experience, but it’s not as simple as picking your favourite flowers and asking them to match the colour scheme. During a consultation, show what the bridesmaids’ dresses will look like and a photograph of your wedding dress to help the florist get an idea of the look and style you’re after. Be specific about what you like, do you want pink roses or are you just after something pink? Think about the style because pastel flowers are ultra-feminine, vibrant shades can have a more modern feel and soft greens paired with white florals can create a timeless look. It’s important to keep in mind the venue; blooms can be kept to a minimum if you’re saying ‘I do’ in a park or a gorgeous garden. Opt for arrangements that look like they belong at the venue, clusters of wild flowers may look out of place in a formal ballroom the same way allwhite orchids wouldn’t look right in a rustic setting. Keep in mind your table shape, which can help influence the shape and style of the centrepieces. Karen Woodhams | Cream & Browns Florist www.creamandbrowns.com 74

JANETTE NOBLE AT SILVER BIRCH DESIGNS We’re an award-winning wedding stationery business based in the heart of the North East. For more than 14 years, we’ve provided couples with handmade items produced in-house. Our range includes save-the-date cards, invitations, table plans, placenames, menus and more – everything we provide is designed, printed and produced by us! After beginning our journey working from home, we now have a welcoming studio with shelves stocked full of every colour card imaginable, luxury papers, a variety of glues, inks, embellishments, glitters, ribbons, gilding wax, stamps and more.

Many companies have come and gone over the years after realising that handmade is not the simplest nor the quickest option as it takes dedication and a creative flair. Over the last year, we’ve adapted to the COVID-19 restrictions by looking at ways to provide a personal service that requires care and attention to detail. When it comes to customers deciding on design details, we’ve sent out goodie packs in the post that includes swatches of card, ribbons and embellishments to compare. Not only that, but we’ve also developed new ranges to cater for intimate weddings. This year has been difficult for everybody, but it has also deepened my passion and drive for my work. KELLY IBINSON AT BELLABOOSGIFTS

www.clairehirst.co.uk

Shortly after planning my wedding in 2015, I created handmade touches for the day including favours, signs and table décor – all of which went down a storm with my guests! I suddenly had the crafting bug and as a life-long lover of all things bridal, I knew I had to combine the two and Bellaboosgifts was born. Our range includes everything from ‘Mint to Be’ favours (a bestselling item) to wedding signs for four-legged friends. We even make cookies, including our wedding range and cookie gift boxes for birthdays and special occasions. All items are created in the North East at my family home with help occasionally from my lovely mum and daughter. The last year has been challenging for all small businesses, but we’ve done our best to adapt and expand the company. I’ve been working with several brides whose weddings have been postponed and I can’t wait to finally see my new creations when the couples finally get to say those two magical words. MICHAEL HALL AT ABOVE THE CLOUDS WEDDING STATIONERY Based in Tyne & Wear, we specialise in designing and making bespoke invitations and stationery. In 2014, we designed our wedding stationery and was then asked to create items for friends and family. We then started working with couples across the North East and the UK through recommendations. This has boosted interest in our services and we now work with some of the region’s most popular venues including Beamish Hall Hotel, Charlton Hall, Doxford Barns and Wylam Brewery to name a few. The experience we’ve gained while working in the wedding industry enables us to guide couples through every step of the design process, ensuring 100 per cent satisfaction with the final design and surpassing expectations. Independent Jewellers, Dytham Jewellery Designers, give first-hand insight into who they are and what they can offer About us

We are a bespoke jewellery company specialising in personal and unique pieces. We have been trading for over ten years, but the teams experience goes beyond that. We have constantly tried to push forward the idea of bespoke and unlike most jewellers that is our primary goal.

Why go bespoke?

It is simply about getting what you want! It’s personal, unique and made for no one else but you. We really care about what the clients want and we strive to deliver that. We have made jewellery for all sorts of occasion’s birth of a child, funeral and even redesigned old jewellery.

What’s the difference between us and a high street jeweller?

The big difference is many of the high street jewellers don’t have a workshop on the premises, we do. Not only do we have experienced designers, we have experienced jewellers. One thing that is very noticeable is we don’t sell brands, our full focus is on being bespoke and delivering that. We don’t mass-produce items, each item is made for the person or for the bespoke collection at our studio.

Dytham Jewellery Designers Ltd

15 Front Street, Monkseaton, Whitley Bay, NE25 8AQ

How much does it cost?

People are often surprised by how cost effective going bespoke can be. We can tailor designs to meet the client’s budget and give them more for their money over mass-produced items. Design Consultations are completely free and under no obligation to proceed if they don’t want too. Prices are always given before any work is undertaken and there are no hidden costs.

How long does the bespoke process take?

We work on a time frame of 4-6 weeks. This allows us to control the quality and make sure all work is complete on time. We can alter the time frame if the customer requires as long as it is feasible.

What’s been trending this year?

White precious metals have been the most popular but mixed metals, especially for men’s rings, has become more on-trend. Also, men are becoming more involved with their jewellery, they seem to have a greater awareness of what jewellery can offer and represent.

What’s has next year got in store for us?

After the recent expansion of the workshop and studio we opened our wedding ring workshop to rave reviews in February 2020. Unfortunately, due to the current pandemic we had to halt these for safety not long after starting them up. We are hoping to invite couples next year into the workshop to create beautiful bespoke wedding rings for themselves, with the help of one of our Goldsmiths.

HONEYMOON

Retreat to ty the ci

Hannah Faulder visits The Marylebone, and finds out that it offers the best of both worlds for a minimoon in the capital

A

s the country prepared for Lockdown Part II, my husband and I managed to sneak in a last-minute escape to the city to enjoy a much-needed retreat at The Marylebone. Nestled in the hotel’s supertrendy namesake neighbourhood, between the Georgian Welbeck Street and the partpedestrianised Marylebone Lane, you’re just a short walk from London’s most famous Monopoly locations, from Bond Street to Mayfair. Stepping out for a stroll from the hotel, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re in a bustling Cotswolds village – that is until you happen upon Oxford Street. But this is what makes it such a wonderful destination for a minimoon or post-wedding break: it’s close to the action, but it provides a tranquil retreat from it too.

STAY Cross the threshold, and you’ll find a neutral palette offsets the pops of colour and modern paintings on the walls perfectly. Look carefully, and you’ll notice a subtle design scheme reflecting the four seasons as you walk through the hotel. Following an extensive refurbishment, the striking decor extends throughout, and no luxurious touch has been spared. Classic timber flooring, marble-topped counters and wood panelling blend seamlessly with curated artwork and designer furniture. There’s a

whole host of event spaces too for weddings and celebrations with real character; I particularly loved the verdant Palm Room and the sociable al fresco terraces. Our corner suite was chic and fresh, its spacious circular layout houses a small kitchen area, complete with Nespresso machine, a sumptuous living area, dining table and huge marshmallowy bed. “We could live here,” my husband and I kept saying to each other. We sat, champagne in hand, and gazed out of the window over the pretty streets of Marylebone with the city lights glittering in the distance; it had a distinct Mary Poppins vibe. The striking marble bathroom boasted a huge bath, walk-in shower and trendy Malin+Goetz toiletries. The welcome pack with COVIDsafe goodies like hand sanitiser was gratefully received, and the hotel clearly states all the measures it has taken to look after guests’ wellbeing. Looking to really treat yourself and your loved one? The super-stylish Marylebone Suite has a showstopping cedar-clad terrace, with a retractable roof, awesome vistas and an outdoor TV and fireplace – it’s certainly memorable! While you’re here, why not treat yourself to some R&R in the Third Space Health Club, with its gym and 18m pool.

EAT We dragged ourselves away from the champagne and fluffy robes long enough to enjoy the hotel’s restaurant, 108 Brasserie. This is not a typical hotel restaurant, more a fabulous eatery for locals and tourists alike

that just happens to be attached. Set on the cobbles of Marylebone Lane, the outdoor seating with patio heaters makes it look so inviting. Inside, you’ll find traditional style with a modern edge, from rich upholstery and parquet flooring to antique mirrors and decadent florals. The meals on the globally inspired menu feature fresh ingredients with a focus on seasonality. Yummy burrata, salads and decadent desserts were the order of the day, making the restaurant a mustvisit for guests.

EXPLORE The next morning, we treated ourselves to a full English breakfast (one vegetarian) in bed, with hearty portions served under silver cloches, before heading out on foot to explore the neighbourhood. This soon turned into a wonderful day strolling through the nearby Royal Parks, spotting parrots and pelicans before ducking into a café for a takeaway coffee as we meandered up The Mall to take in Buckingham Palace. Next up was a stroll through Hyde Park and into the shopping mecca that is Oxford Street before heading back for a quiet drink at the hotel’s bar – perfection! If you don’t get the best weather, though, the capital’s attractions are within easy reach on public transport – or you could just hunker down in your room and luxuriate in your newly wedded bliss.
