Let’s celebrate!

Ilove how my job means I get to spend my days writing about all things wedding… but nothing actually beats being invited to one, to remind yourself of all the raw emotion that comes with two people committing their lives to one another. I was lucky enough to attend my cousin Jade’s nuptials in the Tees Valley back in July – and am not afraid to admit I shed a few tears on more than one occasion. There was the look of love in Jade’s eyes seeing his wife Simone walk up the aisle. There was the look of pride in Simone’s dad’s eyes as he walked her up the aisle. Then there was that fleeting look of sadness I spied in Jade’s mam’s eyes, at not having her husband by her side. We lost my Uncle Peter nearly eight years ago, and I know how much he would have boasted to anyone and everyone that would listen at what a wonderful daughter-in-law he’d been blessed with.

It just goes to show that tears are to be expected from many a guest at your wedding – so be prepared and have plenty of tissues for friends and family at the ready!

Emotions to one side, there are plenty of other aspects you’ll need to consider when it comes to planning the best day of your lives. Looking for a wedding outfit that’s different from the norm? Turn to our Q&A on page 59, for essential advice on choosing an alternative gown for your own celebration. Also this issue, I’ve been busy searching for the best fashion and grooming experts in your area to get you ready for the most photographed day of your lives (p45), while over on page 49 you’ve the best blooms to choose from for spring, summer, autumn and winter. It might sound obvious, but by picking homegrown flowers in season you’ll save money and reduce your carbon footprint in the process! That’s more money to pop behind the bar, which I’m sure all your guests will appreciate… Happy wedding planning – see you in November!

Ellingham Hall is a quirky 17th century country house resplendent in grand stone architecture, surrounded by stunning Northumberland countryside. A beautiful venue, bursting with elegance and character, it boasts sumptuous reception rooms, 27 boutique bedrooms, two stunning wedding suites and an underground games and party chamber to boot! Offering exclusive use so that your event belongs only to you, the Hall is set in eight acres of stunning grounds and is a perfect example of oldworld charm interwoven with modern day luxury.

Ellingham Hall is licensed to hold civil ceremonies in five spaces,

beginning with the Ceremony Room; featuring an ornate fireplace, painted wall panelling and striking chandeliers that can seat up to 100. There’s also The Chapel, the Hall’s largest indoor space with original stone architecture and vaulted ceilings (140 capacity); the Front Lawn, a pergola placed on the front south facing lawn (140 capacity); Under the Hollies, set on the east lawn and using nature as your canvas (130 capacity); or The Rooftop, with unbeatable panoramic views with the Northumberland coast on the horizon (60 capacity). You can then hold your reception and enjoy your first meal as a married couple in Ellingham’s stunning historic Chapel with adjoining bar, which leads out onto a patio area. The Chapel also includes a mezzanine lounge, with rooftop terrace boasting views of the estate and woodland.

Beyond the beauty of exclusive wedding venue Wynyard Hall lies a fascinating history, enriched by a huge cast of characters, who all played their part in its remarkable story. For generations, thanks to the considerable social and political influence of the Londonderry family and their circle of friends, Wynyard performed an important role on the world stage, playing host to royalty, aristocrats, politicians, diplomats, artists and writers. Now you, too, can play a part in the 120 acre venue’s history, saying your vows there before showcasing the fabulous rolling countryside views to your guests on the incredible outdoor terrace.

A unique feature of Wynyard Hall is that it’s one of a few unique venues that can provide couples with both religious and civil ceremony options, as well as reception rooms, all under one roof. Tie the knot in its

18th century private chapel in front of 120 seated guests, surrounded by stained glass windows and Italian marble walls. Alternatively, if you’re looking for something a little less traditional, the character and charm of the Ballroom (150 guests) or Mirror Room (100 guests) make for two stunning alternatives for a civil ceremony. Next, for your reception, head to one of Wynyard Hall’s state rooms for all your wedding needs. Grand scale celebrations and flamboyant entertainment are written in the history of the Hall, where lavish festivities, balls, garden parties and entertaining royalty were part and parcel of the venue. Here, you’ve the capacity and flexibility to create a wonderfully lavish evening reception, where you and up to 300 guests can dance the night away to a live band, followed by a dazzling fireworks display over the lake.

Owned by the Duke of Northumberland, and initially built as a summer residence in 1872 for the Duchess, the Grand was converted to a hotel in 1877. Regarded as one of the most important landmarks in the area, it boasts a magnificent art deco interior with high ceilings to complement and an incredible sweeping staircase. Then there’s its stone’s-throw location to the award-winning Tynemouth Longsands Beach, which offers amazing photo opportunities thanks to its golden sands, dunes, cliffs and

beautiful water.

For a more intimate wedding ceremony, the Pearl Room is the obvious choice. Holding up to 100 guests, its pearlised interior complements those all-important photos perfectly. Alternatively, choose the Orchid Suite, where you can say your vows with Tynemouth Longsands as your backdrop. Receptions are then held in the Orchid Suite – with its private bar and roof terrace, it’s nothing short of grand. The Grand Chambers is also a fantastic choice for a memorable celebration. Formerly a nightclub, its built-in dance floor, disco lighting and bar is a great space for up to 200.

YOU’VE GOT

friend in me

Abbie and Alex grew up in the same town of Spennymoor.

“We knew each other since we were teenagers, but didn’t get together until our early twenties,” says Abbie. “Since then we’ve been inseparable! Alex is funny, the first one to dance and keeps me laughing, and Alex loves how spontaneous I am. He’s got a point – we’d only been seeing each other for a month when we went on holiday to Tenerife!”

Alex planned his proposal to Abbie with the utmost of precision. “Alex had finished his nightshift and was sleeping his Saturday away, so my mum took me around the shops, which I now know was a ploy to keep me out of the house. When I arrived home, I was exhausted, and asked if we could chill, but Alex

wanted me to make an effort as he was cooking a three-course meal. I wasn’t best pleased, but put on a jumper dress – only to see Alex come downstairs in a shirt and tailored shorts! We sat down to a home-cooked Indian feast, then afterwards Alex disappeared, returning with a gift of an album. I opened it, still clueless, to see that Alex had created an album of our first date; the homes we’d moved into; when our little Frenchie, Fergus, joined the family, plus many more memories. It was only when I turned the final page and saw a picture of me as a toddler in a wedding dress and veil that I realised Alex was proposing to me in our front room!”

The couple set the date for the 17th October, 2021, marrying at Le Petit Château. Here, Abbie tells us more about their big day…

27 REAL WEDDINGS

Our cake was amazing! I’m not the girliest of girls and wanted something different, so opted for an edible paper design. It was a mix of red velvet, chocolate orange and cherry and almond flavours.

The venue really does go above and beyond their call of duty. On the morning of the wedding I asked if I could set up the table names – only to be told, “that’s our job!” I didn’t have to do a thing, which made the day extra special.

I wanted a dress without lace, glitter or sparkle, which is harder than you think! Luckily I found my Stella York gown, with gorgeous spaghetti straps, plunge neckline, no detail, and a tiered bottom.

All our stationery was made by my best friend Suzanne, who’s a graphic designer. We opted for white and off-white in style, with a hint of black throughout.

I tried so hard to get heels and be a bit girlie, but I ended up buying white Dr Martens platform sandals! They were perfect: I danced all night, didn’t get sore feet and didn’t panic I was going to fall.

Le Petit Château had a totally different spin as a wedding venue to otherswe’d seen. We loved how the coordinator said they could make anythingpossible. The cocktail menu was a bonus, too!

How can you not love a day with the people you cherish the most, along with delicious food, great music, and the venue you fell in love with – plus marrying your best friend?

Alex and I booked singer Glen Roughead for our ceremony and drinks reception. We love him! I walked down the aisle to an acoustic version of Tina Turner’s Simply the Best. I had a vision of white flowers on the tables, which in Autumn is a challenge! In the end we cracked it, with white flowers and silver charger plates, which kept the vibe classic and simple. Our all-white flower scheme had an amazing effect. We had a meeting beforehand with our florist, who spent a lot of time looking at what type would be the closest to our vision. My six bridesmaids looked stunning in their pure white dresses. A lot of peoplewere shocked I wanted them to also wear white. It actually made me feel morecomfortable – and just look at the photos! Alex and his groomsmen looked fantastic. We wanted to keep colours to a minimum with our venue being so bright, so they wore grey checked threepiece suits and textured bow ties.

THE PRICE is right

Caroline and Danny Price enjoyed a spectacular celebration at Northumberland’s Doxford Barns Images courtesy of RGM Photo
32

Caroline met Danny in the last place she ever expected to meet anyone – at work! “We worked on different floors and never crossed paths, until one day I was asked to take notes for a senior manager in a disciplinary meeting,” she says. “When I walked onto their floor, I saw a gorgeous man walking towards me – then he opened his mouth and his Yorkshire accent finished me off! After the meeting Danny asked what my plans were for the weekend, and I got so flustered I waffled a lot of drivel. It couldn’t have been that bad, though, as he asked me out the following week.”

Danny proposed on a trip to the Lake District while celebrating Caroline’s birthday. “I’d been hopeful that Danny would ask me to marry him, but I didn’t really think it would happen, as every time I thought he would he never did!” continues the bride. “There’d been numerous opportunities for him to propose, such as my 40th birthday trip to Venice, so I was pretty clueless that he was planning anything. On my actual birthday, we climbed The Old Man of Coniston fell, and Danny had a backpack which he fussed over far too much. It was an exhausting hike, and when we eventually reached the top, I laid down to rest as I was so tired. Danny asked me to sit up – before producing the most beautiful ring I’ve ever seen! He asked me to marry him, and after I said ‘Yes!’ he pulled out a mini bottle of prosecco and some plastic wine glasses from the backpack he’d been so precious about all day. It was a beautiful and romantic moment –although I still wind him up that he didn’t get down on one knee!”

The couple set the date for the 9th May 2022, choosing Doxford Barns for their big day. Here, Caroline tells us more about their amazing wedding…

BARN DANCE

Caroline couldn’t sleep the night after they got engaged, as she was far too excited about getting married! “While Danny slept, I searched up wedding venues online,” she says. “I knew I wanted to get married in a barn and did a random search, and the first one that came up looked amazing – so I dropped them a message. Doxford Barns replied the next day to say they had appointments free that week, so we visited on our way back from the Lakes. The moment we walked into the Great Barn, with its festoon lights and dried hops hanging from rustic oak beams, we were blown away by how stunning it was. The exclusivity of the venue, along with the stunning grounds and cottages to accommodate family and friends, was also a huge selling point. We didn’t want to see anything else – and booked our date right there and then!”

LATE STARTERS

As Caroline and Danny had both been married before; “Danny three times – Ross Geller vibes!” – jokes the bride; they decided against a traditional full day wedding. “Instead, we chose a later ceremony with a laid back informal meal afterwards. Danny was initially nervous about having the ceremony at half five in the afternoon – he thought it was too late and the day wouldn’t be long enough. As it turns out, it was the best decision we made! The day flowed perfectly, and our guests had a fantastic time. They interacted with people they’d never met before, and some made great friends for that day and night with complete strangers – the free prosecco and beer may have had something to do with that! Since the wedding, our guests have told us that it was the best celebration they have ever been to, and for us that’s an amazing thing to hear.”

FAKING IT

When it came to flowers and decorations, Caroline had her heart set on artificial blooms for their day. “I wanted flowers I could keep after the wedding, so found a lovely boutique on Etsy who tailored them to our colour scheme. They provided my bride and bridesmaid’s bouquets, as well as buttonholes. They looked so realistic that our guests couldn’t believe they were fake! I also bought ivy garlands and intertwined them with rose gold fairy lights for the tables, arranging them around the table numbers which were placed on log slices with LED candles.”

While the garlands were meant purely for decoration, Danny’s son, nine-year-old Reid, had other ideas. “It was his first wedding, and he really did have the time of his life,” laughs the bride. “He made friends with one of Danny’s mates, Mark – who’s 40 going on five – and the two of them had a great time dancing together and messing about. Later on in the night, Reid took the ivy and fairy light garlands from the tables and put them around his neck, running around the dance floor while high fiving everyone he passed. This was funny enough on its own, but then Mark joined in on the action! There they both were, chasing each around the room waving their arms about like lunatics – it really was the most hilarious sight!”

DRESSING UP

Having been previously married, Caroline wanted a gown completely different to her first wedding dress so as not to be ‘reminded of my biggest mistake’. “I didn’t want anything too big, but didn’t want fitted, either, so an A-line style seemed the best choice. I must have visited a dozen bridal shops and tried on up to 30 different designs, ending up choosing a dress that the owner of the boutique, June, recommended. I fell in love with the Maggie Sottero Savannah gown but wasn’t sure about the train, so June suggested getting her seamstress to add some sparkles. It looked incredible and made the dress unique to me, which I accessorised with a simple necklace from Swarovski.”

As the couple had only planned to have a small wedding – “which of course didn’t end up this way!” says Caroline – the bride asked her 15-year-old daughter to be her bridesmaid. “She wanted to choose her own dress and colour scheme, so I placed my total trust in her,” she says. “She found a beautiful strapless, sweetheart neckline blush dress from Morilee, and looked absolutely gorgeous.”

Danny and his groomsmen also looked the part, choosing Fred Sirieix suits from Moss Bros. “Danny fell in love with the idea of having a checked suit, pairing it with a pale blush tie to match my daughter’s dress,” says

Caroline. “He wore the same style as his best man and my 19-year-old son, who walked me down the aisle. I couldn’t have been prouder of how gorgeous they looked.”

THE BIG BANG

Entertainment was an important part of the couple’s wedding, to ensure their friends and family had the very best time. “We knew live music would create a great atmosphere, so booked a band we’d seen before who had a great frontman,” says Caroline. “Unfortunately, a few months later we found out he was leaving the band, so set about finding a new one. We found Highway 21 online, who played all sorts of genres, so wasted no time in booking them. Our guests submitted song requests before the big day, so the band were able to deliver a unique personalised set for everyone. They are unbelievably talented and were such a big hit on the night.”

Caroline and Danny also wanted their celebrations to end in style, organising a fireworks display to wow their wedding party. “We wanted it to be a surprise, so, once the sun went down, invited our guests into the courtyard for sparklers. While everyone was distracted, our photographer led us down a side path and asked us to look over the field away from everyone. At that moment, the speakers kicked in with, ‘Ladies and gents, this is the moment you’ve waited for,’ followed by the booming drums of The Greatest Show from The Greatest Showman. Fireworks shot up into the sky from the field, and our guests screamed with excitement as we stood in awe watching the most fantastic display for a full six minutes. Afterwards, one of the wedding coordinators said it was the most spectacular display they’d ever seen – and our guests were blown away.”

SING A SONG

One of the best parts of the couple’s big day was being introduced to everyone as the bride and groom. “As everyone stood to welcome us, Sweet Caroline started to play,” continues Caroline. “We made our way on to the dancefloor and sang and danced along, encouraging everyone else to do the same. The song was special to Danny, as it’s the theme song of his old rugby club. In fact, not long after we got together, Danny was out in York with his team after a game and paid a busker to sing it to me. He filmed the entire thing on his phone and the whole team joined in. This is just the kind of thing that I love about him. Obviously, it was also significant to me because it’s my name! To be honest I’d hated the song for most of my life, because people used to sing it to me all the time, but I really embraced it on the day!”

A APARTworld

Dani and Mitch started their journey living on opposite sides of the globe

Images courtesy of Ruth and Ben

Dani met Mitch in the world of online dating after she spotted his profile on Tinder. “I’d recently deleted the app as I never found anyone to suit, but one day I redownloaded it just for a look – and it was the best decision I’ve ever made! Mitch was living in Australia at the time, so I was pretty confused when I saw how many miles away he was when we matched. We started talking on Instagram, which led to us FaceTiming every day. I actually rang my mam after we spoke for the first time, saying I’d met the man of my dreams. I even joked that we might get married! It’s safe to say I’m now a firm believer in the ‘when you know, you know’ theory!” Mitch proposed to Dani on a surprise trip away to Madeira.

“He was watching weather reports at the tallest mountain for the full week before we were there, and I honestly couldn’t figure out why,” continues the bride. We eventually climbed Pico Ruivo one morning to watch the sunrise, and while admiring the view I turned to see him down on one knee. He said, ‘Danielle Brown, I believe we have something special, and I want us to build something beautiful together. Will you marry me?’ I burst into happy tears, screamed ‘Yes!’ – and in my delight forgot to even look at the ring!”

The couple set the date of 7th May, 2022, choosing Hexham House as their venue and Vercelli restaurant for their reception. Here, Dani tells us more about their big day…

39 REAL WEDDINGS

Vercelli has such a cosy feel to it, with exactly the vibe we were going for. Each table was served sharing platters of the beautiful dishes we had chosen, so people could have a mixture.

We wanted a rustic table style for our reception, with log slabs, candles and lanterns with clear vases of white and pink roses and gypsophila.

The wedding bouquets for myself and my bridesmaids included fresh white peonies, roses and other wildflowers and leaves.

Our beautiful friend Joss made our wedding cake, which was incredible! It featured three tiers of lemon cake with homemade lemon curd mousse, lemon cake with homemade raspberry jam, and raspberry and white chocolate.

We made our own sweet bar, filling glasses and jars with Percy Pigs, Skittles, M&Ms, marshmallows, Haribo, Ferrero Rocher and more.

My friend Arianne Grant did my hair, and I can’t recommend her enough. I have naturally curly locks and she worked with my natural style, adding more definition for a polished look.

I’ve always loved boho dresses and knew exactly what I was looking for, finding it in designer Maggie Sottero. It featured a sheer bodice and beaded lace top with chiffon skirt and spaghetti straps.

40
My two best friends, Jodie and Emily, were my bridesmaids, wearing sage green floaty maxi dresses with V-necks and bow backs. I’m a singer and wanted my fellow bandmate Dan McClew to sing Leon Bridges’ River as I walked down the aisle. It was really special to have Dan as a guest enjoying our day as well as singing and entertaining everyone throughout our wedding. my dad and our two page boys all wore matching suits, with the men accessorising their outfits with pocket watches.
My mam and dad walked me down the aisle, which meant a lot. We’ve had a tough couple of years with my mam being unwell, so having her there was amazing. I was so nervous the day before and Mitch was really chilled out, but when it got to the day it was me who was the calm one! OPTED FOR A SPRING WEDDING?

“Spring is the most wonderful time for natural, meadow flowers,” says Helen Mawson from Newcastle’s Bels Flowers. “Delicate flowers such as muscari, sweet peas and miniature tet-a-tet are available, which are heavenly scented to give a gorgeous atmosphere to your day. Tulips, anemone and ranunculus are also around, which provide a neutral, pastel or vibrant colour palette. The good news is a lot of spring flowers are grown in England, which reduces the carbon footprint for shipping. In the North East, there are a number of growers supplying wholesale to wedding florists, providing beautiful stock which is ‘grown not flown’.

“One top tip for getting the best out of the spring season is to plan with your florist your style and colour scheme, taking advice on which flowers will be the best for achieving your look. Put your trust in them to create your flowery dreams – then await your beautiful delivery on your bigVisitday!”www.belsflowers.co.uk for more information.

GETTING HITCHED IN THE SUMMER?

“For seasonal summer flowers think delphinium, astilbe, garden roses, eryngium, nigella, stocks, sweet peas, scabious, hydrangea, foxgloves and lupins,” says Helen Nicholson from Durham’s Wildflower & Rose. “Think about fragrant herbs, too, which look and smell great in buttonholes – flowering mint, lavender, thyme and rosemary are great choices. More and more people are looking for ways to be more eco-friendly, and choosing British grown wedding flowers is a great way to help the planet. Seasonal flowers will also be less expensive than imported, out of season blooms.

“A top tip is to always keep your flowers in water for as long as possible in summer – and in a cool area if possible. It is also a good idea to hire vases to pop on the top table so that your bouquets can have another drink when you’re sitting down. They also double up as a nice tableVisitdisplay!”www.wildflowerandrose.co.uk for more information.

CHOSEN AN AUTUMN CELEBRATION?

“If you’re having your wedding in autumn there are many beautiful flowers to choose from,” says Becca Angus from Wallsend’s Charisma Florists. “You may lose pretty summer blooms like peonies, however there are many gorgeous textures and colours available, and I personally love anything that’s wild and textured. Some of my favourite seasonal blooms include Astrantia, dahlia, clematis, and ranunculus, all of which you can get in beautiful rich tones to go with the season. There is also plenty of choice of foliage and dried flowers, which add an abundance of textures and colours to your designs. Some to name are eucalyptus, snowberries, oak, wheat and oats.’ “My top tip is to never be afraid to trust your florist. We are experts at what we do and will be able to source beautiful seasonal blooms for you.” Visit www.charismaflorists.co.uk for more information.

DECIDED TO WED IN WINTER?

“In this day and age of post-Brexit price rises and the whole flower industry is in its post pandemic recovery,” says Vicky Laffey from Gosforth’s Floral Quarter. “Explain to your florist the style you like, sending them inspirational images – then let them wave their magic wand for you! My personal favourite options for winter wedding flowers include beautifully textured foliage with candlelight. Eucalyptus has wonderful ‘berries’ on it at this time of year, and mixing different greens together with candles creates a luxurious yet relaxed, wintery feel.

“Dramatic colours are also great for the colder months, with deep reds and jewel tones working so beautifully together. If, however, you’re opting for white for your colour scheme, there are some fabulous bulb flowers coming up at this time of year. Hyacinth, ranunculus and narcissi all have interesting textures that look incredible when placed next to each other.”

Visit www.floralquarterweddings.co.uk for more information.

Here are a few flower facts to consider from Rebecca Taylor of Sunderland’s Under The Ivy…

1 Always book in for a final consultation with your florist to further discuss theme, colours, delivery times and anything and everything in between. It always helps to leave no stone left unturned!

2 Forward planning is key, so make sure you and your florist are on the same wavelength and they have plenty of notes about what exactly it is you’re after.

3 Remember – we get nervous too! It’s just as worrying for us florists knowing that the part we play in your day is such a large one, as you’ll have photographs and memories to cherish forever.

4 Finally, be sure to shout out about how happy you were with your flowers on social media – it gives us great joy to read how pleased you were on the day.

Those in-the-know solve your wedding dilemmas

A BIT FISHY

My fiancé is adamant he doesn’t want a formal wedding breakfast, but I want our guests to enjoy a gourmet meal that’s going to leave them full and contented. What do you suggest?

You can’t go wrong with high-quality fish and chips! Why? It’s one of those meals that puts everyone in a good mood, whether it be from seaside memories or just that nostalgic Friday night feeling. At Wilson’s Traditional Fish & Chips we put the aesthetics in our dishes, complete with complimentary portions of tartare sauce and mushy peas, garnished with a wedge of lemon and a sprig of parsley and put together in a decorative box. It’s a filling dish that will please everyone, plus you can give all your guests the same, with the only variances to your menu being those with dietary requirements – which we can of course happily accommodate. Trust us – guests at your wedding will remember the novelty of enjoying a fish and chip van at your wedding, especially one which looks as good as ours…

PAWS FOR THOUGHT

We want our fur babies involved in our day, so are looking for a photographer that reflects how much we love them. Are there any tips to finding the right person for the job?

They say never to work with children or animals, don’t they? Well, that couldn’t be further from the truth when it comes to wedding photography! Your celebration is one of the most important days of your life, so you want to ensure it includes everyone – and every pet! – that means the most to you! To find a photographer that

you know will be on the same page as you when it comes to your fur babies you should always meet with them before you book, asking how they feel about pets at weddings and exploring a pre shoot where you can take your dogs along to be included in the pictures. Finally, be sure to choose a photographer with a relaxed style to catch all of the candid moments – pets don’t pose for photos and a relaxed photographer will love this!

A PERFECT FIT

After a few months of being unwell, I now need to gain weight to get back to my usual dress size. The problem is – our wedding’s only a year away! What kind of timeframe do I need to find my dress and ensure it fits properly on the day?

LET’S

We’veCELEBRATE?juststartedwedding planning and I’m confused about what a celebrant actually does! Can you help?

A celebrant will help you create the wedding ceremony that tells your love story perfectly; whenever, wherever and however you choose. There are no restrictions on the day, time, venue or what you put into it – I’ve dressed as a pirate, made cocktails and flown birds of prey during ceremonies, so the only limit is your imagination. I’d start by working out what makes the pair of you tick and will surprise and delight your guests. I then start drafting a ceremony that reflects who you truly are and what led you to your special day, incorporating those unique touches that make it so personal to you. We can of course include all the traditional elements, like a ring exchange, or bring in rituals such as hand fasting – whatever illustrates your story best. I’m there with tea, tissues and bourbon throughout the planning, then on the day I’ll deliver the perfect ceremony that inspires you and your guests to share your love and perhaps shed the odd tear of happiness.

At Epernay Bridal, we need your dress to arrive at the boutique at least two months before your wedding date to allow plenty of time for your alterations. When you have chosen your dress – and to minimise alterations – we will take your measurements and order your wedding gown to the closest size. We book three fittings with the seamstress two months before the wedding date, and you’ll have a first, second and final fitting to ensure your dress is tailored to perfection for your special day. Our designer’s lead time is generally four to six months, but that being said, we can sometimes work to as little as five weeks, subject to approval. Another great option is to purchase a dress on the day of your appointment, depending on size and fit. If the sample dress permits alterations, buying a dress at a reduced cost eliminates a timeline. To sum it all up, shopping for your dress at Epernay Bridal 12 months before your wedding date is absolutely perfect!

Our happily ever after

County Wedding Magazines’ senior editor Melissa Cullen shares her wedding planning journey Images courtesy of www.chrisblackledgephotography.co.uk

My husband (it still feels weird saying that) and I were engaged for 18 months before we finally tied the knot. Planning our wedding during a global pandemic wasn’t something I ever imagined happening, but thankfully, despite the ups and downs, we managed to have our

special day. I know it’s cliché to say, but we really did have the perfect day, and we wouldn’t have changed a thing. Now that I’m finally Mrs Cullen, I thought I’d take the time to share with you some tips that I learnt from planning our big day...

We chose a rustic property that looked gorgeous all year round. Ourwedding coordinator, Eloise, took care of all the details and madesure everything ran seamlessly. We arranged a last minute meetingwith her to run through the plan for the day, which we found was agreat help and meant we knew exactly what to expect. I recommendbooking a venue with a dedicated wedding coordinator or hiring anexternal company, so that you can relax and enjoy yourself withouthaving to worry.

Flowers can transform any venue into a beautiful space, so choosing the perfect florist was really important to us. If like me, you’re awful with flower names, I’d suggest going for a ready-made package. I told our florist what I liked and left the rest to her - a decision that saved me hours of stress! One thing I didn’t consider was just how many flowers we would need to take home the next day. We gave our friends and family some of the centrepieces as gifts, which they loved, and it meant we didn’t have to take them all home with us - win, win!

I didn’t anticipate how I would feel after purchasing my dress. I felt so much pressure to have this overcome-with-emotion moment when wearing it, that I started to question if I’d made the right decision. My poor bridesmaids had to deal with so many meltdowns about it, but now that the day has been and gone, I can say that the dress was perfect for me. If you start to panic that you’ve made the wrong choice, think about how you felt when you first tried it on and cling to that feeling. I had several photos of myself in the dress that I would obsess over and criticise, and if I could go back in time, I would delete those photos so I wouldn’t waste time worrying. On the day, with your hair and make-up done, you’ll feel amazing, and all those doubts will drift away. Go with your gut, don’t panic about how you should be feeling or what you should be wearing, and do what makes you happy!

As some of you may remember, make-up is not my forte, and I’m embarrassed to tell you that I can’t tell the difference between highlighter, foundation and concealer! I booked a trial with my hair and make-up artist a few weeks before the wedding. If you’re worried about how you’ll look on the day or want to try different styles, I would definitely recommend doing this. I’m so glad I did, and it meant that I felt relaxed knowing that my suppliers had everything under control on the day.

One thing that we learnt after the wedding is that everyone loves cake! We purchased 50 cake boxes as we’ve both been to weddings where it gets left at the end of the night, so we thought that would be more than enough. However, those 50 went within an hour, and we had guests asking for additional pieces, so I would definitely provide more boxes than you need.

Surround yourself with people that you trust and love. My bridesmaids were amazing in the run-up to the wedding and on the day itself. They spoiled me with two hen dos, which were fabulous, a wedding-themed advent calendar full of fun and thoughtful gifts and endless support and love throughout the planning process. Trust me when I say that you will feel calmer on the wedding morning if you’re surrounded by your best friends. They made sure I looked and felt perfect, and I don’t think I could have done it without them.

Dave and I knew we wanted a band for our evening reception thatwould get everyone up and dancing. We booked an amazing trio wholearnt our first dance song and incorporated some of our favouritetunes into their set list. We were a bit worried that people would getbored or restless throughout the day, but all of our guests were quitecontent chatting during the drinks reception, and I’m quite glad wekept things scaled back as it allowed us to catch up with friends andfamily who we hadn’t seen in a long time due to the pandemic.

Our ceremony was performed by a registrar, who we didn’t meet untilthe morning of the wedding. Originally, this made me feel anxious butthe whole process went smoothly, and the ladies conducting our servicewere calming and reassuring. We incorporated promises to each otherin our vows that we felt represented us as a couple. For those of youabout to tie the knot, try and forget about all of the small things, asthere’s nothing more special than looking into your partner’s eyes andtelling them how much you love them in front of your loved ones.

Talk to your friends and family and see if they’d like to have an active role in your day. Our mums were really pleased that we asked them to be our witnesses, and it was a lovely way of including them in the ceremony. My beloved bridesmaid, Kelly, also sang a song accompanied by Dave on the guitar during the wedding breakfast. It was really touching and one of my favourite moments from the day.

PIECE OF CAKE

My fiancée and I want a black cake for our Halloween 2023 steampunk wedding, but are unsure of anything else in terms of style and flavours. What do you suggest? As part of your consultation, we would normally work with you and create a bespoke hand-drawn illustration of your wedding cake design to begin with. This can be subtly gothic; such as creating the Halloween mood with just the colour palette and a specific selection of sugar-paste flowers; to something that is outrageously steampunk!

With regards to further embellishment, a simple bespoke cake topper can suffice – or alternatively, we can create a fully sculpted wedding cake.

When it comes to flavours, we have a wide range of flavour combinations on our website, but equally, we can accommodate more unusual requests. Why not try a ‘black’ cocoa chocolate cake or a delicious deep red velvet cake?

Q&A Alternative

Whether it’s goth, steampunk or simply something different from the norm, our experts are here to help

THE DARK SIDE

My parents want to pay for my dress, but I’m goth and they just can’t get their heads around my alternative ideas. How can I show them what I mean?

There are now a wealth of non-traditional dresses available for the bride who wants to express her personality. You can be wildly bohemian or totally gothic – or anything in-between. Some of my brides add a hint of their alternative vibe to a traditional dress, and some go all-out in their expression of themselves. It’s therefore really important that your parents understand it’s your day, and that you should feel like the most amazing version of yourself. In the nicest possible way, remind them that they had their wedding how they wanted, so they should let their daughter be the bride she wants to be! I often also tell people how my mum was talked into a dress not to her taste by her mother-in-law. She hated it so much that 55 years later it still irritates her! BRIDE & TESTED

As you’ll know if you’ve been following her Bride’s Dairy features, our own CWM bride, Melissa Barker (now Cullen), tied the knot this summer. When her make-up artist advised at her trial that she begin a skincare regime and invest in a moisturiser, exfoliator and eye cream, we leapt into action to find the best products for her. Here, Melissa shares her skincare journey to W-day…

Glossybox Skincare Exfoliating Clay Scrub £13, www.glossybox.co.uk100ml,

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this exfoliating scrub, but after just one use, my skin felt smoother and healthier. Unlike many other exfoliators I’ve tried, this wasn’t too harsh on my skin, but still did a great job of cleaning my pores. After six weeks of use, I still have over half of the 100ml bottle left, so it’s great value for money, and I’d recommend it to anyone.

Ameliorate Replenishing Facial £24,Cream75ml, www.ameliorate.com

I was a little apprehensive about trying this face cream, as more often than not, new products make my skin break out. I was pleasantly surprised that after just one use, my skin felt hydrated and smooth and best of all, it didn’t cause any unwanted reactions. I’ve been using this twice a day for six weeks, and I’ve definitely seen a smoother and softer result.

Perricone MD Cold Plasma Plus + Eye £83, www.lookfantastic.com15ml,

This cream is designed to reduce the look of dark spots and smooth the appearance of lines, wrinkles and uneven texture underneath your eyes. I’m 27 and like to think I don’t have too many wrinkles yet, but I do have dark circles, so I was interested to see whether this cream would help. After six weeks of use, it had decreased the puffiness around my eyes and has made the dark circles less noticeable. It’s left my skin feeling soft and hydrated, and a little goes a long way.

JUST CHILL

When Patchology’s Rosé Sheet Masks landed on my desk in the middle of the summer heatwave I couldn’t wait to get home and chill. Literally that is, as the pack states “served chilled,” so I popped them in the fridge post haste. I’d been suffering with very dry skin, which had me in a panic about Melissa’s impending wedding day and how it would affect the look of my make-up – one more reason to take this mask out for a spin as it’s packed with hydrating hyaluronic acid. Even the pack adorned with champagne glasses looks wedding ready!

So, I smoothed one of these chilled sheets masks onto my hot and bothered face and settled myself on the patio with a glass of wine and a book. Let me tell you, after a scorching day, this was heaven. It calmed my angry skin right down, but not only that, the dry patches were much improved after massaging the remaining serum into my skin. In fact, my make-up artist wasn’t sure what I was worried about when I shared my dry skin woes on the big day, and my foundation went on a dream. Thanks Patchology! £28 for four masks, https://patchology.co.uk

THINK PINK

Premium Spanish spa brand Germaine de Capuccinni will be ditching the usual grey bottle of its hero product, Timexpert SRNS Repair Night Progress Serum, in favour of a pink version in honour of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.

The brand’s most technologically advanced booster serum for youthful, rejuvenated skin is packed with no less than 22 active ingredients. Having evolved over the years, its new formula includes an innovative ingredient that increases the power of absorption by eight, making the serum penetrate deeper for fast, effective results. At night, while your skin is more receptive, it repairs damage and re-activates cellular regeneration. During the day it protects skin against environmental factors and external aggressors. £127.50, https://germaine-de-capuccini.co.uk

RAISING THE BAR

Far from an ordinary bar of soap, le savon lune from silver-based brand ARgENTUM is an ingenious cleanser in solid form, making it perfect for popping into your suitcase as you head off on honeymoon.

Any water content in the product is replaced with the brand’s patented fusion of silver hydrosol and DNA HP, and targets blemishes while leaving skin clean, cushioned and visibly healthier. Great for men or women, the formulation is also enhanced by bentonite, a colloidal clay composed of aged volcanic ash, traditionally used for its healing effect. Combined with other winning ingredients, this ensures a purifying action without dehydrating or irritating your skin, keeping it in check without upsetting its natural balance. £80, www.argentumapothecary.com

SILKY SMOOTH

According to experts, keratosis pilaris or strawberry legs is something that’s present in 80 per cent of adolescents and 40 per cent of adults and is aggravated by heat and sun exposure. At last count #strawberrylegs peaked at 144.9 million views, but is still growing. Enter Luna Daily’s Everything Oil, this skincare saviour is clinically proven to visibly reduce ingrown hairs, scars, stretch marks, dark spots, redness and bumps for smooth, soft skin. Plus, this lightweight and deeply moisturising, multi-tasking oil is gentle enough to use anywhere on your body. £18, https://luna-daily.com

AU NATUREL

If you prefer to de-fuzz at home, check out Parissa’s 100 per cent natural cruelty-free and leaping-bunny-certified wax range. The products and their packaging are all made from sustainable, ethically-sourced, natural materials, so if you care as much about the environment as you do about what you put on your skin, give them a go. Say “no” to synthetic waxes!

There are a wide range of options available depending on your experience and hair type. I tried Parissa Legs & Body Warm Wax (£13). Just pop it in the microwave to warm it up and you’re off! Everything you need is included from spatulas to strips. I decided to wax one leg and shave the other for comparison. There’s a slight chance I over heated the product as my waxed leg was livid with me afterwards. However, the redness had all gone down by the morning and I was left with a silky-smooth result versus the shaved leg, which was dry and still a bit rough. The waxed leg was good to go beyond the spray tan too, so I didn’t need to risk any damage, and lasted past Melissa’s wedding and well into the following week before I needed to take further action. My advice would be to start with the wax strips if you’re not used to waxing at home or have sensitive skin, but I was super-pleased with the results.

TIME TO SHINE

The days of using a wealth of products on your hair are over with TAOH, as the brand makes taking care of your locks a doddle with its line of key products with all-in-one solutions to help you achieve the glossiest, most luxe-looking and healthy tresses no matter the type or condition.

The Hydrate Shampoo (£17) and Conditioner (£18) are now a mainstay in my shower and are infused with organic plant oils that have breathed new life into my hair. By far my favourite product in the range though is the TAOH Oil (£20). Argan, macadamia and kukui oils help to restore the life and shine of locks, while promoting scalp health to encourage growth and vitality. It also prevents split ends, calms frizz and detangles. I used it after washing my hair the morning of Melissa’s wedding and received multiple compliments throughout the day about how shiny it

Peace Out’s Retinol Face Stick (£28) and Retinol Eye Stick (£25) offer an encapsulated retinol blend that softens the look of wrinkles and texture without any of the harsh side effects. In addition, the fruit enzyme complex combines papaya and pumpkin to target pores and reveal brighter, smoother-looking skin. Nicole Petty, haircare expert for Milk + Blush, shares 2022’s most popular wedding hair trends and how to achieve them

▲ FLIPPY BOB

We often think of long hair being the height of romance, but shorter wedding hair is having a moment in 2022. Many have taken inspiration from Kourtney Kardashian's latest look and have adopted her flippy bob for their big days.

To get the look, use a hair mousse for plenty of volume. Then, with a round brush, blow dry the ends upwards to create the flick. Follow with the cool setting to help your locks stay in place and finish by spritzing with hairspray.

▲ MESSY BUN

Although, achieving the perfect messy bun can feel like an impossible task TikTok has the answer with a viral hack that’s seen more than six millionSectionviews…your hair into two ponytails and twist into rope braids. Next, tie the ends of the hair back into the pony to create two loops. Finally, thread one loop through the other to create the bun and secure in place with bobby pins. To elevate the look into the bridal realm, pull out some face-framing tendrils and loosely curl them for the ultimate romantic up do.

Nothing exudes glamour like Hollywood waves, a firm favourite among brides. Jennifer Lopez showed just how stunning the style can be at her recent wedding to Ben Affleck, styling her hair in loose curls, with the top layer pulled back into a subtle bouffant.

To recreate the look, use a oneinch curling iron to curl the tresses in layers from the bottom up, holding the curling iron horizontally and rolling the hair downwards as though you’re using rollers. Finish by gently combing through and positioning the hair to create continuous waves before holding the still-hot curling iron against where they dip and clip them in place to cool and set.

▲ HALF-UP, HALF-DOWN

Romantic, versatile and effortlessly elegant this has been one of the most popular styles for brides to wear this year.

Almost anyone can wear a half-up, half-down do, but for those with fine hair, consider investing in some extensions for more body. Focus on creating some height at the crown with some volumising spray and backcombing.

British independent designer, The Camden Watch Company has announced its move into jewellery. The new Memento Mori 925 sterling silver unisex ring is adorned with the company’s Memento Mori design.

Memento Mori translates as: ‘Remember you must die’, a recurring theme in Victorian jewellery and art. Contrary to how that may sound, Memento Moris was intended as a celebration of life, to remind us that life is short and every second counts.

Anneke Short, designer and co-founder of The Camden Watch Company, said: “While watch design has always been a passion, I originally studied jewellery making and decided it was time to pursue this. While I love all the products we make, the Memento Mori seemed most natural, especially with its link to the Victorian era who had a fascination with collecting Memento Mori keepsakes.”

The ultimate

Olivia Gibson discovers why Dubrovnik is the perfect honeymoon destination

After what felt like an eternity of not being able to travel due to restrictions, I was so excited to visit the Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel – especially after seeing images of the stunning property online. For the first time in three years, I packed my bags and headed to theDubrovnikairport!  is a wonderful place to visit, evident even from thousands of feet up in the air. The crystal-clear waters, beautiful beaches and picturesque landscapes create the perfect backdrop for honeymoons –no wonder it’s known as the Pearl of the Adriatic. After a short flight, we touched down and the real adventure began!

THE PERFECT SETTING

With a beachfront location and a showstopping backdrop of the Adriatic Sea, the five-star hotel offers some of the best views in Dubrovnik. From the moment I arrived, the staff were so welcoming and accommodating –nothing was too much trouble.

With 292 luxurious rooms, I couldn’t wait to see where I would spend the next few nights and wasn’t disappointed when I entered the spacious deluxe double room. The air-conditioned space featured double sinks, a waterfall shower, bath, seating area and a queen-sized bed. My favourite part of the room was the balcony, where I spent most of my time soaking up the sun on the lounges.

The hotel has everything needed for memorable holidays from restaurants, bars, pools, a spa area and a gym – there’s something for everyone to enjoy. The well-maintained facilities were excellent, and I especially loved the outdoor pool area surrounded by sun lounges – the perfect location to relax your senses.

The beach was located only a few meters from the property and was a wonderful place to relax. With a peaceful atmosphere, crystal-clear waters and the sound of crashing waves, what better location to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life? I loved relaxing on the sun loungers with a book while enjoying the sea breeze.

FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD

As a massive food lover, I couldn’t wait to try some local delicacies. The hotel is home to three restaurants; each offering something different to cater for all tastes.

When we first arrived at the hotel, we had a welcoming meal in the Momenti Restaurant. Here I enjoyed a prawn and beetroot starter, sea

bass with potatoes and asparagus for main and a tasty chocolate cake for dessert. The food was incredible, especially the fluffy and dreamy potatoes!

Each morning I was greeted with delicious food, from cereals, pastries, granola and fresh fruit to a selection of hot food, including sausages, omelettes, bacon and hash browns.

The buffet restaurant was superb, with a laid-back atmosphere and a variety of delicious food. Every night the chefs used fresh ingredients to create a fantastic selection of Mediterranean and international specialities that even the fussiest eaters would enjoy. A highlight of my trip was sitting outside on the terrace during dinner, which had a romantic atmosphere and was the perfect location to watch the sun set. For those chilly evenings, guests can sit indoors while enjoying the stunning views thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows. One of my favourite meals from the restaurant was a spaghetti dish - the flavours were unbelievable and I wish I knew the recipe!

For more of a relaxed meal, the Miramare is a beachfront restaurant that offers panoramic views and a wide range of food. It was here where I enjoyed a chicken BLT, the best sandwich I’d ever eaten, and sipped on someWecocktails. hadafarewell meal at the Momenti Restaurant on our last night at the hotel’s sister property – Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel. After a short walk, we arrived at the sophisticated space and enjoyed a goose liver pate with puff pastry pears, followed by scallops and a hazelnut and destination

chocolate cake to finish. Croatia is well known for its wine, so of course I had to try a few glasses.

I couldn’t fault the service, the staff were always very attentive, friendly and professional. My glasses were never empty, and I felt really looked after.

TIME TO EXPLORE

What better way to explore Dubrovnik than on an electric tuktuk? The tour started at the portside market in Gruz Harbour where we got a chance to see the local area and fishermen. We had so much fun whizzing around the streets and enjoying the incredible views, especially from the Franjo Tuđman Bridge. I loved visiting the top of Srđ mountain and seeing the beautiful islands off the coast. The guides were excellent and they shared so much history and knowledge.

The hotel is only a few minutes from the charming Old Town, which is enclosed by Medieval walls, and is a must-visit destination. Game of Thrones fans would recognise the spaces from the much-loved show as the town was a filming destination for some very iconic scenes.

In the Old Town you’ll find cobbled streets, bars, shops and restaurants, alongside many historical features and architecture. The town has survived many historical events, such as the 17th century earthquake and The Croatian War of Independence in the 1990s.

REST AND RELAX

Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel is home to the Balance Mediterranean Spa by Valamar. Here we indulged in the most relaxing session, which started with a 35-minute de-stress massage. I was nervous at first as I’d never had a massage before, but the team were fantastic and put my mind to ease. I walked out of the room completely relaxed and headed straight to the relaxation room on the waterbeds. My body felt amazing and it’s fair to say I will be getting another one soon! There are many other treatments guests can book, including facials, pedicures, manicures, body treatments and more.

The facilities in the spa were great with a steam room and saunas. After a few hours of relaxing, I went into the indoor pool for a swim and enjoyed the fruit-infused water and to The Afrodita Spa, which was for ladies only.

Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel is perfect for those on a budget who still want to enjoy pure luxury. This four-spa hotel has many stylish rooms, a refurbished lobby and pool area.

FUN IN THE SUN

I highly recommend visiting the Coral Beach Club Dubrovnik for those staying in either hotel. With beach activities, excellent dining, entertainment, bars and spa elements, this popular space is not one to miss! The food here was fantastic and it’s the ideal space to spend a few hours relaxing with a cocktail in hand.

THE FINAL VERDICT

I couldn’t fault my stay at the Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel. If you’re searching for the perfect honeymoon destination, look no further. The hotel provides the most romantic setting to relax and enjoy quality time with loved ones.

From the moment I arrived in Madrid, a two-and-a-half hour flight from London, I was greeted by a myriad of narrow streets and large squares filled with landmarks to fill my Insta feed at every turn, from the iconic Royal Palace of Madrid and Plaza Mayor to the eclectic mix of boutiques, tapas restaurants and bars. This extended bank holiday is a great time to visit when the weather has warmed up (average temperature 67 degrees) but the heat of the summer hasn’t yet descended on the city.

A WARM WELCOME

Nestled in the heart of this largest city in Spain, tucked away on Calle de Echegaray, sits the five-star Gran Hotel Inglés, Madrid’s oldest hotel having opened its doors for the first time in 1886. Located a 25-minute drive from the airport, I was excited to visit this boutique property, a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, that oozes the glamour of bygone times from the moment you step into the decadent 1920s-inspired lobby with its feature bar, mirrored walls and Art Deco touches.

into a delicious menu of pastries, cold meats and cheese, eggs benedict and a selection of miniature desserts washed down with a Cosmopolitan cocktail, all while enjoying live music from talented singer, songwriter and guitarist Gigi (www.instagram.com/gigimcfarlane).McFarlane

with a choice of L’Occitane bath products. A highlight was the balcony providing outside space in the city –stepping on to it and admiring the view, I felt like I was in a movie.

DINE IN STYLE

Restaurant Casa Lobo in the hotel is well-known on the Madrid dining scene, with its open-plan kitchen serving traditional dishes. A highlight for me was the Show Brunch, priced at 45 euros per person and served every Sunday in the lobby, where I tucked

TAKE A DIP

A fun way of giving my body a little TLC after a day spent sightseeing was a visit to the dedicated spa facility and wellness area where I reserved the jacuzzi and had exclusive use of the entire spa. Tempting treatments on the extensive spa menu that uses Sisley products include an aromatic Californian massage.

WHAT TO SEE

A visit to the tourist hotspot Sol-Gran Via is a must, where adjoining streets blend culture and history with theatres, restaurants and shops. El Retiro Park provides a green oasis in the heart of the city, the perfect spot for a picnic with its pretty Rosaleda Rose Garden and a large artificial lake where rowing boats can be rented.

DO NOT DISTURB

The hotel boasts 48 luxurious rooms and suites, from the spacious Deluxe and Grand Deluxe Rooms to the Echegaray Suite (bearing the same name as the street outside) which was my home-from-home for three nights. This stylish space sleeps up to four people in two large suites interconnected by a hallway (perfect if you’re enjoying a family-moon).

There are two king-size beds with a pillow menu that guaranteed my beauty sleep, two fully equipped bathrooms with waterfall showers and a freestanding vintage-inspired bathtub

Last but certainly not least, the La Latina neighbourhood situated in the heart of Madrid, dating back to the Middle Ages, is home to the famous El Rastro Flea Market which was top of my list to discover. Allow some time in this bustling area that offers a romantic mix of old meets new. Viva España!
