ECO-FRIENDLY BEAUTY Grüum, a Manchester-based skincare and haircare brand, has launched a new range of wash bags made from ocean-bound plastic. Ideal for eco-conscious brides and grooms, the bag is available in three colours, is ethically sourced and is 100 per cent vegan. The new range comes as non-profit organisation Plastic Oceans estimates that 10 million tonnes of plastic are dumped into our oceans every year, the equivalent of a truck-load every minute. Andy Shaw, the co-founder, said: “Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. From our ever-expanding range of zero-plastic products to our packaging choices, it’s really important to us. We only want to create products that serve a real purpose, with no gimmicks or labels. Sustainability and inclusivity are core pillars of everything we do, so we don’t make things ‘for him’ or ‘for her’; we make them for everyone, with one fair price for all.” Head over to www.gruum.com to see more.

REST AND RELAXATION The Rena Spa at the Midland, based in central Manchester, is transporting its guests to the rolling countryside of Bordeaux by providing face and body treatments from French beauty brand Caudalie. Whether you have a few stolen hours or a whole weekend to unwind in Manchester, there’s a range of treatments and products to choose from, such as sleep chambers, a heated relaxation pool, steam rooms and an indulgent treatment menu. This ritual begins with a back cleanse, exfoliation, and deep tissue massage and incorporates a nourishing mask applied to the back. This will relieve tension and revitalise, leaving guests feeling rejuvenated. Alternatively, the Crushed Cabernet Scrub Treatment incorporates one of the most popular scrubs from Caudalie’s spas. This exfoliation technique regains the skin’s radiance and softness, providing the optimum opportunity for the skin to absorb hydrating ingredients. The Caudalie signature sculpting massage follows, using the contouring concentrate, which stimulates the systems of the body and encourages the natural elimination of toxins. REAL WEDDINGS

Natural ROMANCE Katy and Andrew tied the knot in a beautiful ceremony at Stanley House Images courtesy of Rachel Ovenden Photography

We loved the manor house aesthetic of Stanley House, and the staff were very friendly. Joe and Natalie were amazing and went above and beyond for us.

Andrew and I wanted earthy tones with a neutral colour palette and lots of candles. Creative Venue Stylist in Burnley provided beautiful Mr & Mrs lights, a postbox, drapes with fairylights, chair covers and sashes.

Our big-day blooms were from The Flower Shop in Clitheroe.

We chose a three-tier cake provided by Finch Bakery. 20

Rachel Ovenden Photography was amazing. The aftercare and attention to detail we received was exemplary.

REAL WEDDINGS

The bridesmaids opted for stone-coloured multi-wear dresses from Victoria Lou Bridal.

I found my dress at The White Gallery in Ramsbottom. I went for an elegant Adrianna Papell gown called Kate. I loved that it wasn’t too large in the body, and I added thicker lace straps to create the look I wanted.

Our guests were entertained by the Northern String Quartet before, during and after the ceremony. Jason Rea Magic then performed at the wedding breakfast, and Stephen Bayliss Corporate Entertainment sang for us in the evening. We were so happy. Every single one of them excelled in what they did and remained upbeat given the uncertain times.

Andrew chose a navy suit with a grey tweed waistcoat from John Francis Formalwear.

We were very excited but nervous due to the COVID-19 announcements. The run-up to the wedding was very emotional due to the ambiguity, but in retrospect, we feel so fortunate that we were the last wedding at Stanley House before we were put into lockdown. 21

C

harlotte and Steve met at work. “He came in for a job interview at the insurance broker I worked for,” says Charlotte. “Steve said that I was the first thing he saw when he walked into the office. He successfully joined the company, and we hit it off straight away.” Steve proposed during a Caribbean cruise. “We booked it for January 2019 to celebrate our 10th anniversary,” shares the bride. “We’d docked in St Thomas on the morning of our anniversary and had gone to get some breakfast whilst we sat on the deck enjoying the view. Steve said he felt unwell and needed to go back to the room. He returned shortly after and said he wasn’t feeling great, so could we go back to the cabin. Unknown to me, he was perfectly fine but had taken the opportunity to run half the length of the cruise ship and down four flights of stairs to prepare the cabin for the big question. When we got back, Steve walked past pretending not to know where it was so I’d enter first. I walked in, and it was completely dark apart from a small ring box on the end of the bed, open with a single bright LED shining down on the contents. I immediately broke down as Steve told me how much he loved me and what I meant to him. We got engaged then and there.”

SETTING THE SCENE “We’d originally planned to get married on a cruise, but due to COVID-19, we decided to choose somewhere local that meant something to us,” explains Charlotte. “Lytham St Annes is a place close to our hearts that we visit regularly. We wanted a venue that had a sea view and a welcoming feel to it. The Clifton Arms Hotel was perfect! It’s an independent family-run hotel that was refurbished in 2020. Bernard, our wedding planner, has worked at the hotel for more than 45 years and was amazing! Nothing was too much trouble.” For their favours, the couple gave their guests candles and home-brewed beer made by Steve. “He designed and printed the labels for the bottles,” adds the bride. “He also created our table plan based around an imaginary cruise itinerary with ports of call being the table names such as Barcelona and Gibraltar.” “Our centrepieces were tall cylinder vases containing dendrobium orchids and floating candles,” recalls Charlotte. “Our flowers were orchids, ivory roses, and blue thistles finished with navy ribbons from Bond & Bloom.” Charlotte and Steve chose a two-tier cake from Treats of St Annes. “It had a Mr & Mrs topper and dangly bride and groom figures,” says the bride. “It was decorated with navy drip icing and made up of vanilla sponge and strawberry jam.” “We decorated the space with a fairylight backdrop, ivory blossom trees, light-up letters, lanterns and petals from Sophisticated Events,” shares Charlotte. “Clifton Arms Hotel were kind enough to arrange the chair covers and sashes for us.”

DRESSED TO IMPRESS “I wore a Stella York wedding dress from Ava Rose Hamilton,” explains the bride. “I loved the lace slim fit style, beaded

25

crossover neckline and long train. I accessorised with a bag, shoes and a hair clip.” Steve chose a navy suit, grey waistcoat and matching pocket square from The Bridgewater Menswear. To help him stand out, he wore a Rolex pocket watch and Marc Darcy navy tie. “The bridesmaids opted for navy halter-neck dresses from Next,” adds Charlotte. “The design had lace on the bodice and tied in perfectly with our colour scheme.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE “To keep our guests entertained, we hired Sarah Davies Harpist to perform during the ceremony and meal,” recalls the bride. “She played a mixture of classical and modern music that sounded great. In the evening, the Brothers Of Swing performed. They sang a wide variety of genres and got everyone up dancing.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS “We both felt fine on the morning of the wedding, but Steve did get a little nervous when called upon by the registrar,” laughs Charlotte. “After 18 months of the pandemic, it was great to have all our family and friends there to celebrate, and we felt so fortunate and blessed. We’d planned to use a local taxi service to take us to the beach to have our photos taken at sunset, but sadly the minibus was delayed, and the light was fading. This was when our photographer, Simon from Creative Camera, offered to drive the 10 minute trip in his Mini. Without him going the extra mile, we would have missed the sunset and wouldn’t have the photos we truly wanted.”

MINIMOON For their minimoon, the couple went to The Woodland Spa in Burnley. “It was wonderful,” says the bride. “We’re planning a seacation cruise around the UK later in the year as well.” 26

eborah and Joe have been friends since they were nine years old. “We went to high school and college together,” says Deborah. “We had lots of mutual friends and started to meet up when we were both at university and enjoyed spending time together.” Joe proposed at their home seven months after they moved in. “He wanted to take me on a walk, but I was being grumpy and didn’t want to go,” shares the bride. “He decided to surprise me by asking me at home instead.” Here she shares some of her favourite moments from their big day... 29

HOT TOPIC:

wedding worries Our experts solve your problems

READY, SET, PLAN! Q – We’re getting ready to book a celebrant. What should we ask before booking? Congratulations on deciding to have a celebrant-led ceremony! You already know that you want something different for your wedding day and are happy to go off-script to achieve the ceremony you really want. A celebrant-led wedding is intimate and special, but the right supplier can elevate the merely fabulous to create something completely magical. Your supplier is going to spend a lot of time with you, getting to know you and learning about your journey so far. They will listen to your story and weave it into your wedding script with the right amount of gravitas, warmth, humour and sentiment for you as a couple. For this reason, you need to make sure that they’re right for you. My number one piece of advice is to speak to as many celebrants as you need to in person, by phone or by video call and find out what their style is. Ask them questions about themselves, the way they work and what type of wedding they most like to officiate. Do they have a similar vibe to you and your fiancé? Do they have a similar sense of humour? Will they be able to set the right tone for your day and get the party started in style? With the right pairing, both parties should arrive on the day feeling comfortable and calm, like they’ve been best friends for years! Deborah Bootle Celebrant www.ribblevalleycelebrant.com 46

PLANNED TO PERFECTION Q – How can we find the perfect wedding planner? One of the best questions to ask is whether or not the supplier is specialised. Can they do any type of wedding? This is important because booking someone who is a jack of all trades means you may not get as much value for your money as you would with someone specialised. This is because specialised suppliers will have spent time learning and perfecting their niche. For example, if you’re having an indoor wedding close to home, then you don’t want to hire someone who focuses on destination weddings as they wouldn’t be able to provide you with the services you need. Moreover, ask to see their contract and their terms and conditions. Many planners don’t have much wriggle room when it comes to this, so you need to make sure it suits your needs. Each contract will be similar, but little things may be different depending on the supplier, such as what would happen if a late payment was to occur. BOOGIE ALL NIGHT

EXPERT ADVICE

Q – My hubby-to-be and I want fun entertainment. Do you have any suggestions for finding a supplier? When it comes to wedding entertainment, every act is different, but there are a few things you’ll need to know, whether you’re booking an acoustic duo, a string quartet, or a nine-piece Motown band. Firstly, ask if they offer to learn any song requests, it’s always good to know this in advance rather than a month or so before your wedding. Some acts will include song requests in their packages or can learn a song for an additional fee, however not every supplier offers this, especially if they have an extensive repertoire already, but it’s always worth asking! Similarly to this, you should also request to see their repertoire before booking to make sure you love the songs you’re going to be listening to. Ask whether your entertainer requires a meal, particularly if they’re performing during your evening reception or throughout the day. Some acts always request a meal, and some aren’t fussed! If you’re worried about the price of supplying a meal for your entertainment, ask your venue if they can offer crew meals, which are slightly cheaper than guest meals. Finally, ask for proof of PAT tested equipment and Public Liability Insurance. Almost every venue will require your entertainment to have this, so it’s good to check this from the moment you book. Becky Chamberlain Musician www.beckyandjoshduo.com

A DAY TO REMEMBER Q – How can we find the perfect celebrant? Choosing the right celebrant for your ceremony is an important decision, so shop around and don’t rush into booking anybody until you are sure they are the right supplier for you. Start by looking at websites and social media, this will give you a feel for their vibe. For example, if their gallery is full of sassy and fun pictures from previous ceremonies, then explore further to see if it’s the right balance of excitement and romance for you. Make contact and expect a timely response – it will give you an idea of how much value the celebrant puts on customer service. A tardy response may indicate a shoddy commitment to being on hand to respond to you in the future when you need advice. Meet face-to-face or via Zoom! It’s extremely important to have a good relationship with your supplier. Are they onboard with your theme, and do they have lots of wonderful ideas to enhance your ceremony and make it personal to you as a couple? Do they pay attention to detail? At Pink and Ginger, our motto is, “Your Day, Your Way,” it’s your ceremony, after all! Are they bubbly and enthusiastic without being overbearing? A celebrant’s enthusiasm should be infectious. They should leave you excited and confident that all your plans are coming together. They should take pride in ensuring you are happy with every single detail and be prepared to make amendments at your bequest. Your ceremony will be bespoke to you, so nothing less than perfect will do. Nikki Bithell Celebrant www.pinkandgingerceremonies.co.uk 47

Fall in love with musical-inspired shoot at Ivory Tower Images courtesy of Emily Robinson Photography

F

rance is one of the chicest and musical countries in the world, so what better way to bring these two elements together than a wedding?” says Sommy Echezona from M.Fiore Events. “We wanted to focus on the elegance of a spring colour palette and bring the musical elements to the forefront of this shoot. We chose a pastel colour palette with earthy soft tones to pair with the contemporary venue, the Ivory Tower. The gorgeous images from Emily Robinson Photography, along with the video by Maxine Furness Films, brought the concept to life amazingly. Emily and Maxine truly captured the idea, capturing the love and the warmth of the day along with the musical elements from Elinor Nicholson Harpist that left all the suppliers in awe during the ceremony and the first dance.” The décor was supplied by Amoré Events Stylists. “They created elegant and stunning setups that elevated the images, with the clean placing of the waterfall candles for the ceremony and wedding breakfast, beautifully paired with Lune Valley Crockery Hire’s tablescape,” shares Sommy. “The perfect touch was the gift boxes provided ByAraa, which incorporated the theme effortlessly. My personal favourite was the wedding breakfast setting mixed with the candles and flowers by Honeys Hideaway. The pale blues, yellows and lavenders make an elegant statement feature for the sweetheart table. The couple is literally surrounded by floral heaven! The French touch of the hand-painted

macarons, music notes by Wilde Bakery, and the couple’s favourite band table sign are all elements that capture the theme, bringing everything together.” The bespoke bridalwear and veils, by Daniel Chu, really encompass the theme. “Each gown flowed effortlessly, and had such intricate details that set the chic and luxe tone for the shoot,” explains Sommy. “We had accessories for the bride, supplied by Cassie M Bridal, whose hair combs, with pearls and silver crystals were used in the delicate hairstyles, designed by Hair Creations By Colette. In addition, we had a bespoke hair bow, supplied by The Boho Bride, which tied the theme together perfectly. Furthermore, Natalie from Nala & Knot created a modern make-up look for our bride, using earthy tones. The editorial was further elevated by the romantic and intricate stationery by NorthernmadeCo. They combined the French elegance with subtle musical elements such as the invites having a music score in the background, the bouquet ribbon bow, which quotes the Elvis Presley song Can’t Help Falling in Love and the band name table sign. We wanted to inspire couples who are planning their weddings and showcase how you can personalise your big day through these small details. I felt so lucky to work with such amazing and talented suppliers who ran with this concept and brought it to life.” 49

Winter luxe “Think earthy, graceful and romantic in soft neutral colour palettes. Our Prosperity Range combines natural tones and pampas with the most gorgeous soft pink preserved roses and protea stems.” – Jen Murray from Adamapple.

“A classic winter wonderland wedding with frosted foliage is a classic and timeless style.” – Bethany from Flowers By Jemma Holmes.

“Classic whites and greens always look good against the dark winter sky and hopefully the snow-covered ground.” – Lynne Godfrey Symonds from élégance en fleurs. “Dried flowers are a huge trend right now. For a long time, couples have had to choose between fresh or artificial flowers but preserved versions mean you can keep them in your home as decorations long after the big day. They need very little maintenance, and by keeping them dry and out of direct sunlight, they will last around three years.” – Jen from Adamapple. www.adamapple.co.uk

www.adamapple.co.uk

“We anticipate that there will be less emphasis on dense foliage, with bouquets expected to be slightly smaller in size.” – Lynne from élégance en fleurs. “Sweet tones of burgundy, whites, light pink and foliage create a lovely ambience without becoming overly festive, which can easily be done.” – Bethany Byrne from Flowers By Jemma Holmes. www.flowersbyjemmaholmes.co.uk

Gorgeous flowers all year round

“Long gone are the days of brittle, colourless flowers collecting dust in your kitchen. Welcome glorious luxury blooms dried and preserved to create stunning masterpieces. Whether you’re dreaming of a boho, industrial-chic or country garden wedding, these will suit almost every style. The preserved rose stems that we use in our bouquets look and feel like a fresh rose, so you can have your cake and eat it too!” – Jen from Adamapple. 53

“There are so many colours used for summer weddings, so we would suggest picking your favourite palette and not swaying to far from it. This will help you avoid your wedding becoming too busy or messy. Designs which include a tonal palette such as pinks and purples work well for this time of year.” – Bethany from Flowers By Jemma Holmes. “Using wheat and delphinium grown here in the UK complemented with preserved roses is perfect for a boho or country-chic theme.” – Jen from Adamapple.

“We love when couples go for pastel yellows, baby pinks, whites and blues. There is a wide choice of seasonal flowers available such as tulips, daffodils and hyacinth, which are great for achieving a fresh and vibrant look.” – Bethany from Flowers By Jemma Holmes.

“The preserved roses in our Blush Range are soft to the touch and look like they have been freshly plucked from the stem. Matched with a huge stunning dried pink protea stem which is freeze-dried in our studio and surrounded with striking ivory pampas, this bouquet screams luxury.” – Jen from Adamapple.

“Pastels are a beautiful colour scheme for spring. Garden roses in soft tones with plentiful, structured petals add elegance to any design.” – Lynne from élégance en fleurs.

“As the cooler nights draw in, our Pure Range is the perfect autumnal choice. Preserved eucalyptus that rustles in the breeze coordinated with neutral soft bunny tails and preserved ivory roses.” – Jen from Adamapple.

“Autumn is naturally more rustic than other seasons. We anticipate dried flowers will continue to be a popular choice, particularly when mixed with fresh flowers in orange, combined with a pink and purple palette.” – Lynne from élégance en fleurs.

“Our advice is to talk to your florist in the early stages of your wedding planning!” – Lynne from élégance en fleurs.

“Venue decorations are likely to be even bigger than before.” – Lynne from élégance en fleurs.

“Beautiful floristry can really create and enhance the atmosphere at any wedding, so it’s something to keep in mind when you consider what you’d like on your special day.” – Lynne from élégance en fleurs.

www.flowersbyjemmaholmes.co.uk

“Blooms, such as phalaenopsis or protea, would also look beautiful in seasonal bouquets and designs.” – Lynne from élégance en fleurs.

“Autumn is my favourite flower season as there are so many options available. You can create natural designs including wooden logs, foliage and autumnaltoned florals, pumpkins and candles. Alternatively, you have the option to go big, bright and bold with lots of fiery tones finished with foliage.” – Bethany from Flowers By Jemma Holmes.

addison Troth, the senior wedding coordinator at Stanley House, tells us more about these gorgeous images. “We wanted to showcase our function rooms to remind people of what a beautiful venue Stanley House is. It was a good opportunity to meet with suppliers that we haven’t worked with before and to do something different. Our inspiration for the shoot came from the function rooms themselves. Our upstairs room, The Barn Suite, is a bright, glamorous space, so we went down the route of whites and greens, which made it feel light when you walked in. The natural beams were used to hang centrepieces from which we had never done before, Amoré Event Stylists put the idea to us, and we loved it. In our downstairs event space, The Stables, we went for a rustic feel. Both of our function rooms are very versatile, and look great with either a glam or boho theme. The Ivory Dressing Room provided us with the perfect dresses to match both spaces.”

Love is in the air

County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

I

can’t quite believe that my wedding is only 10 months away! The time is going by so fast, and it still feels like we have so much left to plan! As some of you may know, within the first few months of being engaged we’d booked our venue, photographer and caterer and were on the lookout for the rest of our suppliers. With the pandemic pushing most weddings back in to 2022, we found that a lot of companies we were interested in booking weren’t available. Not to be defeated, we carried on searching knowing it was best to get everything sorted as early as possible. My fiancé, Dave, and I are enjoying the process, but it can feel slightly overwhelming at times. With such a big family and many coming from abroad, we’ve found it difficult trying to keep everyone happy while also maintaining our original budget, but we’re still super excited to see what the day will look like.

FLORAL WONDERS I love flowers and fully believe they can transform any venue into a beautiful space, so choosing the perfect florist was really important to me. I wanted something to tie in with our blush and sage green colour scheme but also complement our barn venue. Despite working in the wedding industry for more than five years, I’m ashamed to admit my knowledge of flowers isn’t great, so I needed a supplier who would

60

be able to make suggestions and help us bring our vision to life. Whilst looking through social media, I happened to come across a stunning, oversized bouquet that was exactly what I wanted. I looked up the company and found they were based just five minutes from our wedding venue – I thought it was fate! The florist had a range of pre-made packages that suited our needs perfectly. We checked the company’s reviews online, confirmed availability for our day and discussed our needs. The team were fantastic and even suggested ways of helping us save money, which we really appreciated. We booked bouquets, buttonholes, pew ends, centrepieces and an arrangement for the top table, which we’re excited to see. As we were in lockdown at the time, we were unable to meet our florist in person, so when restrictions lifted slightly we travelled to meet them at a wedding fair. Being able to discuss our vision in person made us feel confident about our decision, and I’d definitely recommend meeting face-to-face if possible.

DRESSED TO IMPRESS After being engaged for a few months, I decided to give in to my mum’s nagging and go dress shopping. I’m short, curvy and very selfconscious, so I was dreading trying on gowns! We visited our local boutique, and since I had no idea of what style I wanted, I must admit I felt quite overwhelmed. I started with a fishtail, which I liked the look of, but it just didn’t feel like me; I also felt like I couldn’t sit down without bursting out of it! I quickly moved onto an A-line silhouette. The second gown I tried on was one I’d seen online and loved. It had three-quarterlength sleeves, a detailed bodice, a plunging neckline and lots of lace. On paper, this sounds like everything I didn’t want in a dress, but strangely enough, it turned out to be the one. I tried on a few different options afterwards (mainly for fun), but I found fault in all of them

and always came back to my dress. It needs some alterations as it’s slightly too big, but I purchased it there and then. I would share a picture with you all, but Dave reads this and is (annoyingly) traditional so is against seeing the dress before the big day! One thing I didn’t anticipate was how I would feel after purchasing it. I always thought I’d feel over the moon, but instead, I felt quite panicked. Not because I didn’t love the dress, but after years of writing about weddings, I felt so much pressure to have this overcome-withemotion moment when wearing the one for the first time, that I started to question if I’d made the right decision. I’ve since come to realise that everyone is different, and I absolutely adore my dress whether I cried or not. I’ve spoken to a few of my married friends, and some had similar experiences, which was reassuring to hear! My advice to any bride-to-be is to go with your gut, don’t panic about how you should be feeling or what you should be wearing, do what makes you happy! Make sure you check in next issue to hear all about our engagement shoot and my search for a hair and make-up artist.

Melissa. x

Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.

BRIDE’S DIARY

We haven’t decided on a table plan yet, but we like the idea of names hanging from string surrounded by gorgeous flowers.

I love confetti pictures, and it’s something I really want our photographer to capture on the big day. We’re currently looking into eco-friendly options and trying to decide which colour to use.

Our photographer has suggested taking pictures of my dress in different parts of the venue, and I’m excited to see what he comes up with.

Seeing as this July it rained, a lot, we’ve purchased some white umbrellas just in case the weather turns bad for our July wedding next year.

How stunning is this flower arch?! I’d love to incorporate something like this into our day.

Our colour scheme is blush and sage green, so we’re going to incorporate both hues into our table decorations.

The chalkboard signage trend is here to stay! I, for one, adore it and am thinking of using one as our welcome sign.

To decorate our wedding chairs, we’re thinking of acquiring wooden bride and groom signs.

To keep the rings safe, we’re planning to buy an engraved box that we can keep for years to come. 61

REGIONAL SHOOT

Celebrant Kelly Garrick organised this football-inspired styled shoot at Fleetwood Town FC Images courtesy of Ashley Barnard Photography

C

elebrant Kelly Garrick organised this football-inspired styled shoot. “I wanted to collaborate with Fleetwood Town FC to celebrate love taking place on match day,” says Kelly. “I arranged a meeting with the club and took along some flyers with the words ‘I vow to always love you even during the football season’ and discussed the possibility of holding weddings on the pitch. The venue jumped at the chance to create something special and agreed to hold the shoot. With excitement, I called upon all my creative friends, and we were spoilt for choice with the event spaces. With the famous football pitch as the main stage, we also showcased the Parkside Lounge for the romantic wedding breakfast and evening celebration, which has a panoramic view over the pitch. This lounge is modern, spacious and has a state-of-the-art colour changing ceiling. I wanted to showcase that love happens anywhere, even at a football stadium. Having led hundreds of weddings during my career, I have seen first-hand that imagination can be a reality. I vowed to showcase that romantic weddings and football can be teamed together.” “As I was wrapping up all the last-minute details for the shoot, our model, Darren, called me one night and asked if I had a few minutes to chat through an idea he had,” explains Kelly. “He wanted to surprise his wife on-site and renew their wedding vows at the shoot! I was so psyched and loved the idea. I, of course, ran it by all the vendors and the venue before giving him the green light. Everyone was so excited and loved the idea. We decided upon a handfasting where the couple’s hands were tied together with ribbons symbolising the binding of their lives, the vows they renewed to one another and the union of their hopes and dreams. We chose the club colours for the decor. The black ribbon symbolised love, wisdom, success and strength. The red ribbon symbolised passion, courage and health, and the white ribbon symbolised peace, truth and devotion.” 63

I absolutely love mine – it’s taken the stress out of washing my hair in more ways than one. Check out www.aquishair.co.uk where the AQUIS Copper Sure Rapid Dry Hair Wrap is priced at £30. 76

SILKY SMOOTH

Silk is by far the best material to use in a cleansing routine as the natural amino acids leave skin noticeably radiant and delay the ageing process. Cotton is, in fact, abrasive on a cellular level so, cleansing with a flannel causes friction leading to fine lines. This Is Silk’s 100 per cent silk face cloths boast a weave that gently exfoliates, conditions and smooths skin, leaving it glowing. What’s more, they’ve been naturally dyed black to avoid unsightly make-up marks, which can blight their white counterparts even after a thorough wash. Emolyne Ramlov, founder of the eponymous make-up brand, talks inclusivity and bringing a colour boost to your bridal beauty

Tim McBaj

It’s our first anniversary soon and there’s been so much to learn over that time. Covid made things difficult as we actually went into lockdown around two weeks before launch. But we’d worked so hard for two-and-a-half years and I didn’t want to delay. It was a risk, but luckily it went crazy. Black Lives Matter came along and as an inclusive brand headed up by a black woman there was a lot of interest in what we had to offer. Everything happens for a reason.

B

orn in Uganda and raised in Denmark Emolyne Ramlov discovered a passion for make-up upon entering her teenage years. Until the age of 13 when she moved to Europe she hadn’t been permitted to wear make-up, which in Africa was seen as a distraction from studying and an unwelcome beginning to a flirtation with the opposite sex. So, it was a complete culture shock for her as she sat alongside her new classmates to find them in full beat and looking glam. “I went home and said to my mum: ‘We need to talk!’ She took me shopping and I filled my basket with as much make-up as I could. I needed to catch up and I haven’t stopped since,” she tells us. County Wedding Magazines’ beauty editor, Kelly Andrews, met up with Emolyne to discover more about her journey from passionate teenager to creating her very own make-up brand. What was the inspiration behind Emolyne? As my love for make-up grew I visited plenty of big stores looking for products to suit my skin tone, but couldn’t find the right ones. They had two to three reds perhaps, but none that I 78

liked or were complementary. As I grew older I realised that this was a problem across a lot of different product ranges. There was no single brand offering a matching lipstick, liner and nail polish, so I thought: “Well, I’m just going to do this then!” I use a lot of reds and nudes myself, so it made sense to start there, making sure that no matter the skin tone someone would be able to get at least one of each. I created 15 reds and 15 nude shades and even then I wasn’t sure if I should stop! The range has five colours for light, five for medium and five for dark skin tones. It allows people to pick a different colour for different seasons, as our skin tone changes throughout the year. I also created a kit to save my customers time, meaning once they discover their perfect shade they can easily find the matching products. When it came to naming this huge range of shades I wanted to be able to tell a story while keeping the brand personal, so I immediately thought of Africa. It was a way of honouring my place of birth and bringing the whole story together. Plus, I knew I could never run out of names if I looked there for inspiration!

Tell us more about the ideas, ethics and beliefs the company is founded on. I wanted this brand to be for everyone, no matter their gender or race – if you’re into make-up this is the place for you. The selection is big enough that everyone can feel included, which was the key. How do we achieve that perfect marriage between skin tone and make-up shades? The easiest way for us was to put models on our website covering as many different skin tones as

BEAUTY INTERVIEW

we could. That way customers can see whose is the closest to their own and how each shade looks on her. Tell us about your own beauty regime. I keep it simple. I wash my face every morning and evening, as well as steaming to open the pores, which allows serums to absorb more effectively. I use serum everywhere – hands, face, neck. These are the areas that start to show signs of age once you reach 40, so it’s important to look after them. A dermatologist once told me to use serum on my dry hands, and up to then I’d always thought it was just for the face, but I’ve never looked back. Ole Henriksen’s Truth Serum is my favourite, and not just because he’s a fellow Dane! What are your make-up bag must-haves? Uganda, Casablanca and Abuja are my favourite Emolyne shades. But it’s like being asked about my favourite child – they’re all my babies! I mainly wear a nude during the day for meetings, and in the evening I prefer reds. I’m particularly into red oranges at the moment. I always carry a nail polish with me too – Cameroon is versatile and works for all skin tones. And tissues... a mum can’t work without a tissue! What’s your top wedding-day make-up look? I’d go for something light depending on hair colour and skin tone. Keep it simple, elegant

and clean to keep focus on the eyes. You want your new spouse to see you sparkle. For light skin tones I’d recommend Luxor, Eritrea or Ciaro. For medium tones Tanzania, Kampala or Uganda work beautifully. And for darker tones Nairobi, Asmara or Marrakech are all perfect. Begin by using your favourite moisturiser, I’m a fan of a thick formulation in the winter. That serves as a base for the foundation and concealer. Then, keep building the look until you’re happy. Don’t start too strong as it’s hard to take anything back once you’ve gone too far.

“Enjoy and play with colour. Rule your shade and don’t be afraid to try something you haven’t tried before, they’re there to be explored.” What advice would you offer a bride who might not be used to wearing make-up but who wants to step it up for the wedding? I’d tone it down, don’t use too much. A little colour makes the lips pop, and match that to the eyeshadow for an on trend monochromatic look. What’s the one make-up secret you wish everyone knew? Moisturise properly before you do anything else. That’ll give you that all-important glow and

sets your make-up for long-lasting perfection. It was essential to me that our lipsticks last so you don’t have to keep topping it up throughout the day and that’s particularly important for a bride. What’s your proudest achievement so far? Definitely having the brand recognised for inclusivity. I love to see people go on the website and realise just how much choice there is, and hearing them say they just don’t know which to choose. The other thing for me was being able to make the products vegan and cruelty-free. I wanted to educate people to care about what they put on their skin, so this makes me really happy. Is there anything you’d still like to achieve? So much! Every day we listen to our consumers and what they want. So, the next phase for Emolyne Cosmetics is incorporating more skin tones for them, as well as including more models they can identify with. I also want to grow the product categories while staying within the 15 reds and 15 nudes concept. Look out for our pop ups too. Our original plans for these had to be cancelled due to Covid, but I still want somewhere for people to experience the range in real life, so they’ll be coming soon.

FALL IN LOVE

Q – I need some ideas for a hairstyle for my late autumn wedding, what can you suggest? When choosing your hairstyle, you should consider the style of your dress, its neckline, your hair type, whether you’re wearing it up or down, your face shape, wedding theme and accessories. Once all these factors have been discussed, you can begin choosing the perfect style for you. Autumn is my favourite wedding season. It’s such a romantic and atmospheric time of year with the most beautiful colours. Here are some of the most popular styles: ♥ The messy up do. This is my all-time favourite and is such a versatile look. It can be done high up, low down with plaits or with twists. It’s a perfect style for bad weather and looks chic at the same time. An autumnal headpiece such as a flower crown made with dry blooms, silk or fresh flowers in burnt oranges, golds and browns and can be worn with or without a veil.

80

♥ The braid is ideal for a boho look accessorised with vines, tiaras or smaller hairpieces. ♥ Half up and half down is a timeless beauty. I would only suggest this look if your locks are naturally curly. If not, go for loose flowing plaits which will hold your curls. ♥ Sleek Chinon is a romantic hairstyle that brings class. It can be done on mid-length hair or longer and is great with a veil or smaller hairpieces. With all these styles, follow your hairdresser’s home care advice to get the best results. The pocket-sized palettes come with four different shades to match any make-up style and I loved mixing them to create a bespoke hue. To achieve a luminous complexion, I applied to the high points of my face including my cheekbones, brow bone, cupids bow and bridge of my nose, and this buttery, powdered formula blended in beautifully. A big bonus for me was that you can add a small amount for a natural look or build up for a glam finish that looks great in photos.” — Olivia Gibson

Day one: layering Glass Glow on the cheekbones before foundation application, I received compliments on my luminous complexion! Most of the buildings are constructed on stilts that allows for natural thermal flow to cool the rooms and this structure also ensures there is minimal contact with the earth below. The whole spa is built underground which provides natural cooling too – almost 80% of the wood used for both structural elements and furniture is recycled. Rates: Three nights at Santani Resort & Spa starts from £2,660 (double room, half-board basis including wellness package and experiences). A 14-night bespoke itinerary starts from £6,995pp (price based on two adults sharing and includes accommodation on mix of half- and full-board basis, experiences and personal chauffeur. Excludes flights).

Kalundewa Retreat

An eco-retreat tucked away in a lush 100 acres in Dambulla drawing its beauty from the mystic Kalundewa Mountain range. The isolated farming community contribute to the hotel resulting in a handful of eco-friendly dwellings to minimise human impact on the intricate ecosystems that flourish in the forest, lakes and waterway. Eco & Sustainability Credentials: The retreat blends both agriculture and tourism, and contributes to the welfare of its neighbouring rural farming community. Its vision is to go 100% organic with all cultivation processes. Currently 100% of the electricity consumed is generated by solar panels. Irrigation is via restored waterways and windmill-pumped ground water, and the natural well feeds spring water into the main pool. Rates: Three nights at Kalundewa Retreat starts from £1,850 (double room, full-board basis including experiences). A 14-night bespoke itinerary starts from £6,995pp (price based on two adults sharing and includes accommodation on mix of half- and full-board basis, experiences and personal chauffeur. Excludes flights).

Leopard Trails

This bespoke, luxury, tented safari operates within the buffer zones of both Wilpattu and Yala National Parks with the aim of minimising its impact on the environment. Its existence is to showcase a true wilderness experience but prioritise above all else, the protection of nature. Eco & Sustainability Credentials: Leopard Trails works hand in hand with the local community with campsite staff and drivers handpicked from the local community; fruit, vegetables, meat, seafood and other provisions are sourced from local suppliers and, where possible, equipment is manufactured and maintained within the local area. The team actively discourage the use of plastic water bottles and only use reusable stainless steel thermos flasks. Many rangers are either qualified in eco matters or have been responsible for implementing award-winning ecotourism and sustainability initiatives. Rates: Three nights at Leopard Trails starts from £2,660 (double room, full board-basis including experiences). A 14-night bespoke itinerary starts from £6,995pp (price based on two adults sharing and includes accommodation on mix of half- and full-board basis, experiences and personal chauffeur. Excludes flights). All properties can be booked as part of a tailor-made holiday to Sri Lanka with Sri Lanka Bespoke: www.srilanka-bespoke.com 89
