My number one piece of advice is to enjoy the process and make it about what you want. We found that many of our nearest and dearest were quite vocal about what they wanted and how the day should be, which can feel quite overwhelming at times but try to remember it’s meant to be about you and your partner. Pick things that you want, and that will make you both happy and forget about everyone else. The day goes by in a flash so take some time out just the two of you to have a chat and take everything in. Things will go wrong, but that’s okay. On the day, you won’t notice the little things, and all that will matter will be celebrating with your friends and family. Surround yourself with people that you love and trust. My bridesmaids were amazing at keeping my nerves in check and making sure I felt like a special bride. It’s official, I’m a married woman –eeek! After being engaged for nearly 18 months, and with all of the lockdowns and uncertainty, it’s been quite a rollercoaster of emotions, but I couldn’t have asked for a better day. CUMBRIA Set in the Eden Valley, Long Acre Barn is discretely located on a working farm amongst pastoral countryside with stunning views across ancient woodland and a flower meadow. Celebrate in style With a wedding licence for the whole venue, couples have the flexibility to tie the knot anywhere at Long Acre Barn – from the orchard, lawns or Log Store to the main Barn or Granary. As a venue with lots of break out options, it can easily cater for any wedding. On the left side of the property is The Barn and Granary, which has a large sandstone patio, pergola, and quirky wall. The Barn can accommodate up to 140 guests throughout the day, while the Granary can hold 30.
The Victorian orchard is a very relaxing space, with a meandering hoggin path leading to the walled garden, a patio and a seating area outside the Barn. There’s also a large lawn that overlooks the woodland and wildflower meadows.
Across the lawn is the Log Store, a fun and quirky covered space with a firepit, lights and room for 40 nearest and dearest. It’s perfect for barbecues and hog roasts or creating a festival vibe and comes complete with a glitter ball tied to the corrugated roof with a piece of baler twine. We love... With acres of space, there’s plenty of room for camping, and there are family cottages nearby. For couples, there’s a traditional farmhouse cottage with a stunning dual-aspect master bedroom complete with a copper bath, which is included the night before and evening of the wedding.

The Morning Room is where Mrs Potter used to sit and wait for her daughter, Beatrix, to arrive for tea. The last space available is the Sitting Room. Rydal Mount & Gardens, which was a focus for romantic literature, continues to be owned by the Wordsworth family and retains the feel of a lived-in family home. Elyse and Kyle lived close to each other but didn’t meet until a night out. “We were best friends from the second we met,” says Elyse. “Not long after we’d put a deposit down on our first house, Kyle proposed on my birthday. Our cake was a four-tier design from Victoria Cakes. It had a castle on the top and our wedding date and initials written on it in navy icing. We’re both from Bolton and had always loved the exterior of Bolton School Weddings & Events. We didn’t know it was also a wedding venue until we visited during a wedding fair and fell in love with the inside too.
Kyle and I decorated the room with a large dancefloor, a post box, Chiavari chairs and a curtain behind the top table. I attended the wedding in my dad’s Tesla, and Kyle arrived in his friend’s car. We hired a car from Special Wedding Cars for the bridesmaids, which they loved.
For our favours, we gave our guests little boxes of chocolates. We wanted to show off the room, so we opted for a combination of tall and small centrepieces. We also had a floral arch and flowers from The Lavender House that lined the aisle.

I wore a Morilee gown called Surim 2146 from Ava Rose Hamilton. The dress was not what I expected at all! It just felt perfect when I tried it on, and since the design was very princessy, I decided I wanted to wear a tiara and a long veil.
We had a pianist perform as I walked down the aisle. He made our day fantastic and played everything we asked for and even took requests! We hired a DJ for the evening, who was brilliant and we even played Mr and Mrs. The day was amazing, and I don’t think there were any dry eyes during the ceremony.

“I had left nursing and wanted to focus on taking over my own bridal shop when I went on a Blondie tribute night. It turned out Andy and I had mutual friends and we hit it off immediately. He was so understanding and compassionate, and I have never felt more cherished. After only a matter of weeks, he never went home. When you know, you know!” Andy popped the question during a surprise weekend away. “We went to Manchester for the night and then got the train to York the following day,” shares the bride. “My mum had been admitted to a home with her rapidly developing Alzheimer’s, and so once Andy proposed, we booked our wedding within six months to try and ensure she could make it and still know who we were.”
Andy wore a dark grey suit with a waistcoat and braces from Swarbricks Suit Hire. “He chose a gold tie and pocket square, and his brother, the best man, wore green to match my daughter’s dress,” shares the bride. “The groomsmen had a paler grey suit, no waistcoat and wore burgundy ties and squares to match my sister, who was my matron of “Myhonour.”daughter, Amelia, had a deep green velvet midi-length wrap dress and my sister, Nikky, wore the same in burgundy,” explains Wendy. “I gave them both a diamanté choker and a snowflake bracelet for the day, and we all had coordinating porcelain hair pins/combs from The Bobby Pin.”
SETTING THE SCENE
“The food was provided by Twelve Event Management,” remembers the bride. “We had canapés and drinks on arrival, followed by a threecourse meal.”
Wendy and Andy met at a tribute night. “I had a run of personal losses, including my best friend, partner and dad,” says Wendy.
The couple gave their guests seeds as favours. “These were attached to their place names and placed on a small log slice with hand-painted pinecones and poinsettias,” reveals the bride. “We decorated the tables with wreaths that were placed around mason jars with lights and foliage. The tables were also covered in petals and wooden hearts.”

“I ordered my dress directly from Badgley Mischka,” says Wendy. “It was a design called Danica which I added floral straps to. It was very sparkly and had a real Christmassy feel to it. I thought I was desensitized to dresses as I see them every day at my boutique, Lacy Days of Ramsbottom, but I cried when I put this one on. My daughter came with me, and we also brought my mum from the home so she could be there.”

“Our flowers from Fleur Bloom were used in the centrepieces, and we had a long trail along the top table,” recalls Wendy. “We also had wooden love letters, drapes and lights from the ceilings, a Christmas tree andWendycandles.”and Andy chose their cake from Jon’s Cakes and placed it on a log slice decorated with eucalyptus.
“We only visited two venues, and when we saw Browsholme Hall and The Tithe Barn, we knew immediately it was the place for us,” explains Wendy. “We both got goosebumps and booked it the same day! As it was so close to Christmas and everyone was in need of a good celebration, we decided to create a very intimate, festive day with a good party that we all deserved!”

To keep their guests entertained, the couple hired Ian Lavin - The Event Magician, to perform while the canapés and welcome drinks were being served. “He astonished our guests,” reveals the bride. “In the evening, we booked the Steve Farringo Band, who got everyone up and“Ondancing.”themorning of the wedding, I was excited beyond words to marry the love of my life,” recalls Wendy. “I bought Andy a watch, which the best man gave him whilst he got ready, and Andy sent over some beautiful diamond earrings for me to wear on the day. I was in so much shock that we were actually able to get married against the COVID-19 odds that I was bouncing on my toes down the aisle. Andy asked if I was alright when I arrived as I was so hyper and giddy! The ceremony was very emotional, as both Andy’s parents and my dad are no longer with us and my mum was there with a carer to watch us at the church, and although she wasn’t able to stay for the rest of the wedding, it meant so much to have her there. We didn’t get to practice the ceremony due to snow, and so on the day my daughter was asked by the vicar: ‘who is giving this bride away’ to which Amelia replied: ‘hello’ and waved! The vicar said under his breath: ‘I do’ to try and get Amelia to repeat after him, but Amelia said: ‘yes, that’s me’. He repeated it again until she said: ‘oh yes, I do!’ Everyone laughed, including the vicar and my daughter.”

The couple loved their speeches. “My daughter was amazing doing her ‘giving away’ speech, and every speech was both funny and emotional,” says the bride. “The fact that everyone made the effort to come despite the Omicron Variant rearing its ugly head and being so close to Christmas was amazing! One guest, an old friend and work colleague, sadly passed away two months before the wedding, so there were tributes to those missing, including parents during the speeches.”

Amber and Steve met through work. “We worked together for roughly a year before Steve asked me to go on a date to our local pub,” says Amber. “Ever since then, we haven’t spent a day apart.” Steve popped the question on Christmas day. “He was so nervous in the morning, and I had no idea it was coming,” shares the bride. “It was the best day ever! Flower Glade provided the blooms which tied in with our winter theme. I created the table plan using string, card and a photo frame.
We chose a one-tier ivory cake decorated with silver pearls and a grey ribbon.Our favours were personalised champagne flutes which doubled up as place names.
Ferrari’s Country House Hotel & Restaurant has stunning grounds and the staff were wonderful. The day ran so smoothly and everyone commented on how amazing everything was.
Steve and I decorated the space ourselves and handmade our table names.
Steve chose a chequered suit with a grey cravat.
To keep everyone entertained, we played an Italian game during the meal and had a DJ and magic mirror in the evening. I loved the fit of my dress, and I knew when I put it on that it was the one.
On the day, Steve felt very nervous until after the ceremony.

My mum walked me down the aisle and did the best speech ever. It meant the absolute world for my mother and best friend to do that for me on my special day.

Aisha and Yamin met via her uncle. “As a practicing Muslim, I had always wanted to go down the traditional route of finding a spouse by having an arranged marriage,” says Aisha. “This is where your family introduces you to someone they think may be your perfect match, you then go on dates and get to know the person before deciding whether or not they are the one for you. When I felt I was ready to start searching for my soulmate, I told my family, and they began to suggest potential matches. My uncle informed my father of a potential match, and introduced me to Yamin. My uncle has known Yamin and I since we were born and has always thought we would be perfect together. Our first date was in July 2019 at a coffee shop. However, after this date, we decided not to progress any further as neither of us felt ready to commit. Then came lockdown, and during this time, we both had a lot of personal growth and felt we were ready to progress. Yamin could not stop thinking about me and he suggested we go on a second first date. This was again at a coffee shop, and we hit it off. We met every weekend to get to know each other. After four dates, he knew he wanted to marry me. I had a feeling of happiness and love whenever I thought about Yamin, and so I knew he was the one for me.

FACING FACTS
It’s finally here, my last bride’s diary entry before I become a married woman! When we first got engaged nearly 18 months ago, the wedding seemed so far away that it almost didn’t feel real, and yet here we are about to walk down the aisle. The last few weeks of planning have been a bit manic with all of our suppliers getting in touch asking for lastminute details, and although it can feel a little overwhelming, it’s also really exciting! This issue is all about my dress alterations, hair and make-up trial and keeping positive as the big day approaches...
From Miss to Mrs
As someone who likes to micromanage everything, this situation was certainly out of my comfort zone. I took two of my bridesmaids with me for my first appointment for moral support, and the seamstress, Danielle, was wonderful. She made us feel really at ease and like nothing was too much trouble. She knew right away how to alter my dress and was able to do it within a quick timeframe. I left the appointment feeling much calmer but also a little apprehensive about how the dress would eventually turn out. Fast forward a month, it was time for my second fitting and for the bridesmaids’ dresses to be altered. After a morning of panicking and worrying, I can’t put into words how relieved I felt when I tried on my dress and it fit like a glove. It still needed a few tweaks here and there, but overall I felt much happier as I was no longer drowning in a sea of fabric and worrying that my boobs might fall out at a moment’s notice! Danielle was also very reassuring to the bridesmaids who were worried about parts of their dresses and, within a week, we had all three back looking perfect.
As someone who has only worn make-up once for prom night many years ago, I was unsure of what I wanted when it came to my bridal make-up. Make-up is not my forte and, much to my friends’ amusement, I can’t tell you the difference between highlighter, foundation and concealer – and that’s just for starters! For this reason, I chose a hair stylist and make-up artist with great reviews, who are familiar with my venue and whole-heartedly put my trust in them. During my trial, she sat me down and asked what I wanted, and I was honest and said ‘no idea’. She laughed and reassured me that I’m not the only woman in the world who doesn’t wear make-up (even though it feels like it sometimes). She went for a very natural look and talked me through the process. Even though my make-up looked great and was very subtle, it was still a shock to see myself with it on. It took me the whole day to get used to it, but I was really pleased with the result, and felt like a princess.Whenit comes to hair (you’ll be pleased to hear I’m not as clueless), I had a rough idea of what style I wanted but was torn between a half up and half down look or an up do. My hair stylist was wonderful! She created both looks for me, took loads of pictures and made sure I was happy with both styles. After a lot of deliberation I’ve decided on an up do, as my dress has dramatic front and back detailing that I didn’t want anything to detract from. I left my hair and make-up in place, like they suggested, for the whole day and it still looked wonderful by 11pm. I was really pleased with the whole experience and being dressed up made me feel so excited to finally marry my best friend. Thank you all for sticking with me throughout my wedding journey. Having had several meltdowns over this, my advice to any nearlyweds-to-be is to try not to panic and trust your suppliers. As long as they have good reviews and are confident in their capabilities, then leave it to them – they’re the experts after all!

FITS LIKE A GLOVE I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t incredibly nervous for my first dress fitting. I purchased my gown over a year ago, and I’ve gone through phases during that time where I’ve loved it and also doubted it. It was a size too big when I bought it, so looking back at the pictures it was hard to imagine what it would look like fitting properly. I think my main worry was ‘what if it doesn’t look like I imagined or even worse, what if the seamstress makes it too small or too short!?’

THE SPEECH This is a big one, probably the biggest responsibility of the groom. The wedding day is such a big event in a person’s life, and the speeches really stick with attendees – good or bad! My first piece of advice would be not to leave it to the last minute. It’s certainly one of those things that can be put off, but I promise it won’t be worth the anxiety! There are thousands of great speech templates online that you can use as a starting point. Once I got started, I found writing about my loved ones and the significance of the day was easy, as it’s your opportunity to be honest, and just gush about everything. You proposed for a reason and this is your chance to share it with everyone, including your bride. Write from your heart, speak from the bottom of your lungs and try not to stare at your feet the whole time! Oh, and practicing the speech once or twice before the big day probably isn’t a bad idea!
PLANNING YOUR STAG DO I’ll be honest, I never really saw the purpose of a stag do. Admittedly in my mind, I had this warped perception of the event being a trip to a dubious location to take part in nefarious activities. I’m not a particularly good drinker, and as I creep onto the darker side of my 30s, I’m even worse at handling a hangover, so the prospect of this seemed less than appealing. Sitting down to discuss with my (similarly worldweary) best man, we came to the reassuring realisation that a stag do can be whatever you want it to be. In my instance, I like Centre Parcs, and the thought of a trip there (and many, many barbecues) seemed like a slice of heaven, so this was a bit of a no-brainer. Ultimately my advice to any groom-to-be is don’t be afraid to book something that will make you happy. If your groomsmen deserve their place in your party, they won’t challenge your choices.

Hello readers, as I’m sure you’re all well aware, my beautiful Melissa has been detailing our journey from our couch-based lockdown proposal to the wedding altar, and what a journey it has been! Thankfully Melissa is the most organised person on the planet, so my involvement in this process has been minimal at best, however that being said, I’ve picked up one or two things along the way that Melissa has generously given me this space to share...
CHOOSING YOUR GROOMSMEN Thankfully this was quite an easy one for me. My best man has been my closest ally and confident for 15 years now, so there was no hesitation in my mind when asking him. My biggest concern was that having four groomsmen might be too many, but I couldn’t imagine any of them not being next to me for support, so the thought of losing one of them from the party would have been like removing oxygen. Another thing I’m grateful for is that they all get along brilliantly. Our big day is in September, and I’m worried the weather is going to be awful. How can we capture stunning pictures even if it rains? Weather can be tricky, especially if you’re getting married in the UK. As a photographer, I always encourage my couples to embrace the elements. Rain can add so much drama, romance and beauty to an image. I love the saying ‘life’s not about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain’ as it explains the importance of finding beauty in every situation. You can use umbrellas and create some really fun, playful shots. However, if you don’t feel comfortable braving the elements, then this is where your venue’s interior becomes important. When looking for the perfect wedding venue, make sure you choose somewhere with lots of natural light and an interior that matches your style. If the inside of your venue has dark walls and small windows, you’re going to get darker, grainier photos. Whereas if the interior is light and airy with lots of large windows to let in natural light, then you’ll be able to capture much clearer, crisper shots.

Hidden amongst Cumbria’s stunning countryside is The Den At Four Acres, a new wedding venue which is full of inspiration
Adrian and Sarah Carruthers have recently opened a beautiful tipi wedding venue, The Den At Four Acre in Kirkbride. They have changed their career direction slightly to include running this bespoke venue. Sarah’s dream was to create a magical venue nestled in beautiful countryside amongst trees, high hedgerows and meadowland. The interior of the venue reflects the outdoor door space with ivy and floral decorations, mixed with old metal cartwheels, an indoor firepit, wooden ladders and leather couches. A section of the tipi is dedicated to the dancefloor, which was created from reclaimed wooden boards, and the trestle tables and benches can seat up to 200 guests. The front of the tipi looks onto an outdoor garden which will soon have an outdoor ceremony space. There is plenty of seating and a stone campfire in the middle to sit around on summer evenings. All the outdoor and indoor spaces are subtly lit with festoon and fairylights, which creates a magical space both day and night. The Den At Four Acre is open from April to September and is available on a dry-hire basis over three days. All of the food, the bar and the entertainment are the bride and groom’s choice as can they hire in whatever they like, whether it’s a formal sit-down meal or a laid-back hog roast in the garden. It’s a chance for couples to make their day bespoke.

During my stay, I enjoyed a visit to Project Chocolat from the well-known Hotel Chocolat. I was blown away by the luscious rainforest location, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to the cacao groves. I was then invited to make my very own chocolate bar and tasted some amazing foods from their cacao inspired menu which included cacao mac ‘n cheese and even cacao burgers!

ACCOMMODATION
Whatever your accommodation preference: marina view, beachfront or ocean view, you’ll be blown away. My marina view suite was equipped with a state-of-the-art kitchen and private plunge pool. Listening to the birds with a cup of tea in hand in my plunge pool is a memory I’ll never forget.
You can’t go to the Caribbean without enjoying the freshest seafood. However, the local specialties are a must try from curried goat to breadfruit (similar to potatoes but sweeter and starchier), and saltfish (stewed fish, which is usually sold dried and salted, with boiled green bananas, locally referred to as green fig).

MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES
The flight time may be long, however, it was comfortable, and oh boy, does Sri Lanka make up for the time spent in the air. Upon arrival at the airport, we were whisked away at a rate of knots towards our destination of Cinnamon Bentota Beach hotel. My advice? Save the jet lag slumber for a little while longer, as you’d be mistaken to not fully immerse yourself in the changing landscape you’ll experience on the journey there. The hustle and bustle of Colombo is an assault to the senses – albeit an exciting one. Arriving in the morning, we watched as parents took their children to school on TukTuks and workers started their day. However, soon enough, the city rolled away and we were treated to the lush green landscape Sri Lanka is so famous for. Arriving at the Cinnamon Beach Hotel was an altogether memorable experience. A luxurious property nestled in the mesmerising Indian Ocean along the southern coast of Sri Lanka, it has a heritage dating back to the 60’s and was designed by one of Asia’s most influential architects, Geoffrey Bawa. It is the ultimate tropical destination perfect for an art and architecture enthusiast or a lover of exquisite oceans.
There were countless reasons why Sri Lanka was my number one bucket list destination – with the tropical island pipping New Zealand, the Maldives and Vietnam to the top spot – but the one that stood out to me is the fact it is a Buddhist country, with a culture based on peace and family.
A GASTRONOMIC DELIGHT
Other highlights for fellow foodies included high tea looking out over the ocean, plus the authentic Sri Lankan cooking lesson and Chef’s Table Experience and dinner – all of which are able to be booked directly through the hotel. If you’re looking for a special honeymoon treat – I’d recommend all of the above!
While tired and hungry from our journey, these emotions were soon replaced with appreciation of the traditional welcome we received. Heading into the hotel we were given a quick tour of the awe-inspiring grounds and facilities, and it was straight down to breakfast. With many restaurants on site, Ottimo and Zest are used as a buffet option for all three meals, suffice to say, there’s something for everyone. However, when in Rome and all that – we immediately tucked into curry for breakfast, a habit we all continued throughout the stay.

If you’re looking for something ala carte, the beachside Sea-MeatsSpice Seafood restaurant is the place to be. With the Head Chef looking after the menu, be prepared for a gastronomical sensation, before retiring to the plush sofas for a sundowner with the sand between your toes. The Fuze bar is perfect for a nightcap, and with dramatic ceilings and art aplenty, it oozes luxury.
Travel goals
While the unstable social climate was garnering news coverage at the time of my trip, there is not one point during my stay that I felt any unrest. From the second the tropical heat hit me as I arrived, to the moment I stepped back on the plane with a heavy heart upon my departure, I felt totally secure.
OUT ON THE WATER However, for me, the highlight was most definitely the boat ride on the Madu Ganga and visit to the Mangrove Forest. With an excellent tour guide, we jetted down the river doing our best to spot all the animals that were highlighted as making the river their home. From bear monkeys to water monitors to jellyfish, to kingfisher’s – it was a veritable treat for an animal lover like me. The jury is still out on whether I’m happy or disappointed that the crocodiles kept themselves at bay. And with Mangrove forests stabilising the coastline, reducing erosion from storm surges, currents, waves, and tides, the intricate root system of mangroves also makes these forests attractive to fish and other organisms seeking food and shelter fromWithpredators.littlestops along the way, it was truly special to see cinnamon being made amidst the forest –and I’d recommend bringing some pocket change as it’ll be a feat to walk away empty handed. If you’re one for a spot of shopping combined with a walking tour of a beautiful town, make sure you head to Galle. We combined this with the river tour, and it was well worth the hour’s drive. A stunning town steeped in history there are views for miles and it would be well worth booking with Walkers Tours, and in particular Ashoka Dissanayke, to learn more about this beautifully resplendent town’s heritage. If you do head to Galle, don’t forget to leave space in your luggage for your journey home. With boutique shops and traditional stores alike, I’d challenge anyone to leave empty handed. If you’re looking for souvenirs or mementos of your trip – this is the place to get them.
ADRENALINE JUNKIE If watersports are your thing, you won’t be disappointed at Cinnamon Bentota Beach. Taking place on the Bentota river, there are endless options from water skiing, to jet skis, banana boats and doughnuts. While first trying my hand at the doughnuts, the jet ski was a definite front runner. With the water so calm and the river so vast, it was the perfect opportunity to open up and let rip!

A PEACEFUL NIGHT’S SLEEP Cinnamon Bentota Beach offers 16 Suites with unique sets of artworks that were commissioned from Sri Lankan artists as part of Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts’ pledge to support the local arts and crafts. Eight artists were commissioned to depict a theme and record what they felt the name of the suite meant to them - resulting in each suite telling a story of the people and languages of Sri Lanka.
Well known for its jungles, Sri Lanka certainly didn’t disappoint on this front. Tearing ourselves away from the array of calming pools – and pool bar – we headed to the Lunuganga Geoffrey Bawa’s Country Estate, where we were treated to a tour. If art and culture is your thing – this is one excursion not to be missed. The country house of the renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, the estate is just a short distance from the hotel, and had been used as a cinnamon estate during the Dutch era and then a rubber plantation under the British. In 1949, the estate was bought by Bawa and was converted into a weekend house where he created a tropical version of a European Renaissance Garden. It took the architect 40 years to complete the house.
TOURISM SUPPORT Sri Lanka has had its fair share of upheaval, from the 2004 Tsunami, the terrorist attacks in 2019 and now the national crisis. However, in my opinion this is all the more reason to go and visit this wonderful country, and give its tourism industry the boost it so desperately needs. Not only did I feel safe wherever I travelled in Sri Lanka, I am already planning my next trip back, and this time I may buy an open-ended ticket home…
