Brides Visited, a bridal boutique in Ashtead is now stocking Sophia Tolli’s new 2021 collection. A fusion of modern romance and timeless elegance, the Sophia Tolli Australia collection is a celebration of diversity, femininity and individuality. With the vision to make every bride feel confident, empowered and beautiful on their special day, each gown is handcrafted and designed to be remembered forever. To see the full collection and a wide range of gorgeous dresses, visit www.bridesvisited.co.uk
Local make-up artist Gemma Warburton is teaching brides-to-be how to do their make-up. She tells us: “During these bizarre times, I’ve been working with couples as normal as possible, obviously with additional PPE and necessary precautions. I wanted to create a backup plan just in case I was unable to do my job as usual, so at the trial rather than doing the hair and make-up, I’ve been teaching couples to do it themselves. I offer a consultation as usual before demonstrating the look on myself with the client following along. Doing it this way means the bride can copy what I’m doing and if they require products they have access to my kit. I’m available between the trial and wedding, as they practice just in case they need any help via text, FaceTime, calls or emails. I’m doing this at the same price as my normal packages, a huge reduction from my normal prices for make-up lessons and aftercare packages, and I will still provide the usual touch up kit that all my brides get so they don’t have to organise anything on the big day. I strongly feel that just because the world is a bit strange right now, the bride shouldn’t have to compromise on her look.” Check out www.gemmalouisebridal.com for more information.

A NEW LOOK
Following a year-long refurbishment, the former Loch Fyne restaurant in Egham has been loving converted into a pub. Grosvenor Pubs & Inns have breathed new life into the Grade II listed building, with boutique bedrooms and a gorgeous al fresco terrace. Whilst the newly named Kings Arms has retained some of its traditional touches, including exposed brick walls and low-beamed ceilings, the pub has been brought into the 21st century thanks to plush furnishings and rich colour tones. The dining area, with its mirrored panels, statement light fittings and a bold floral wall, offers a high-end experience complete with a seasonal menu highlighting the best of British ingredients and produce found on The Kings Arms’ doorstep. Local bridal boutique, May & Grace has added a new collection to its offering. To find out more, we spoke to Emilie Crease who tells us: “May & Grace has grown this year. We have hand-selected a new collection to complement our offer for brides-tobe. With the rise of intimate weddings and relaxed celebrations, we feel the new Rosa Clará Boheme will complement this style of wedding perfectly. These gowns have moveable silhouettes, luxurious touches, handcrafted details, boho layered skirts and Provençal lace. “Here at May & Grace, we pride ourselves on our customer service and really go above and beyond for our brides. Macdonald Frimley Hall Hotel & Spa has seen a 25 per cent spike in enquiries after launching a series of flexible wedding packages created especially to help couples tie the knot following lockdown. The fourstar venue had responded to significant demand and has re-shaped its offering to accommodate a range of wedding requests, creating a magical experience in a romantic and safe environment. The team of specialist wedding coordinators will take care of every part of the wedding journey, from venue hire to catering and overnight accommodation for guests. At the on-site spa, couples will be able to pamper themselves before the big day, or relax and unwind in the knowledge that everything will be taken care of by the hotel’s team of wedding experts. Peter Redden, the wedding coordinator, said: “The last few months have created a lot of uncertainty within the wedding market, but we are now seeing a marked rise in consumer confidence. This period of lockdown gave us all time to reflect on what is most important to us, and couples are still focused on showcasing their love and commitment to one in other in front of family and friends and are happy to adapt so their special day can still happen. Your wedding is one of the most special days of your life, and we give a promise to each of our couples that we will do everything we can to create the day they have always dreamed of.” For further information, visit www.macdonaldhotels.co.uk/ourhotels/macdonald-frimley-hall-hotel-spa
Safety first
De Vere Hotels has introduced an initiative called the Wellbeing at Heart programme. With the support of their partners, ChemEco, they have carefully crafted a range of new safety measures to make sure every moment of your stay is safe. From meticulous deep cleaning of bedrooms to thoughtful physical distancing measures inside and outside the hotel. The team has created a cashless environment, reduced contact at reception, and all bookings need to be made in advance via their website. There is a robust and heightened cleaning procedure in place for all public areas, particularly around peak times, and you’ll find sanitising stations in key areas throughout the hotel. The staff are fully trained in the wellbeing programme and safety measures and will wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary. You’ll have the reassurance that they are temperature tested every day before starting work too. Guests can also order a range of food and drinks from the Pantry. There is an online ordering system for room service, controlled pick up and table service in the restaurants. This way you can order those items you’ve been looking forward to throughout lockdown, all without any unnecessary paperwork or cash payments. To find out more, visit www.devere.co.uk

AND RELAXATION Olivia Gibson visited Oatlands Park Hotel to find out what they have to offer
N
estled in Weybridge lies Oatlands Park Hotel, a luxurious four-star venue bursting full of history and character. I had the pleasure of visiting the property with my sister and spoiler alert – it was an incredibly relaxing getaway. The picturesque grounds were once home to a Tudor palace built by Henry VIII in 1538, which hosted many kings, queens, emperors and earls. Throughout the centuries, the site has been rebuilt and remodelled to become the excellent venue it is today. Oatlands Park Hotel is very accessible with only a 20-minute drive to Heathrow Airport, five minutes from Weybridge railway station and the M25 is only 10 minutes away – plus there’s plenty of free parking on-site! There’s a high street nearly, or guests can take a beautiful walk along the River Thames on a sunny day. If the weather doesn’t hold up, MercedesBenz World and Brooklands Museum is just a short drive away.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS I was welcomed through the doors to the main reception area, which features a striking and modern décor, by helpful staff. I was pleased to see the hygiene and safety measures that had been implicated, including mandatory use of masks when walking around, social distancing, a one-way systems and hand
sanitiser stations. With 144 rooms available, I was delighted to hear that we were staying in a feature room. Inside was a king-size bed, lounge area, prosecco, TV and lavenderscented pillows, which were a lovely touch. The en-suite bathroom was stunning with a free-standing bathtub, spacious shower and Oatlands Park Hotel toiletries. After we settled into our room, we set off to discover the venue and found many period features, artwork and stunning floral arrangements. As my visit was on Halloween weekend there were festive decorations and pumpkins scattered around. The team did a wonderful job of keeping it fun but still elegant!
TO DINE FOR I’m a massive food lover and couldn’t wait to visit The Mulberry Restaurant after hearing so much about it. The room looked beautiful with a high-ceiling, lovely artwork and floor-to-ceiling windows with impressive views. I went with the pumpkin soup for starters, I’ve never tried it before and was surprised by how lovely it tasted. Next, I opted for the battered haddock fillet, mushy peas and chunky chips. I wish I could say I enjoyed the dessert, but I couldn’t get that far due to the generous portion sizes. My sister has a few dietary requirements, but the menu
was outstanding, and she was able to have the stuffed portobello mushrooms and the seasonal risotto. The waiters were so attentive, and we really enjoyed our dining experience.
THE PERFECT EVENING Our next stop was Bar 1509, which had an excellent selection of draught beers and spirits. We went for cocktails, of course, and picked the 1509 passionfruit martini and the french martini, which tasted amazing! The atmosphere allowed us to really relax and take some time to catch-up with each other and enjoy our evening. Then it was off to bed, and I can’t begin to explain how comfortable the bed was, within minutes I was asleep and didn’t wake up once until it was morning. There’s a choice of hot foods or continental options for breakfast – I had poached eggs, hash browns, toast, beans and pastries. I don’t know about you, but there’s nothing better than waking up and not having to worry about cooking or cleaning. After lockdown, this was a much needed trip and we were sad to be checking out, but I’m planning to visit again very soon! To find out more, visit the website www.oatlandsparkhotel.com

C
elestine and Andrew started talking over email. “We decided to meet for a drink at Waterloo Station,” says Celestine. “A drink turned into a bottle of wine, which turned into a two-course meal and a very long first date that neither of us wanted to end. When we finally did say goodbye it was five hours later, and we were already looking forward to our second date.” Before proposing, Andrew asked Celestine’s mum for her blessing. “He then went on an extensive ring search and took my sister for a second opinion,” shares the bride. “The proposal itself was months in the planning with a large supporting cast. We were on a cruise sailing around the Caribbean, and just before dessert was served at a formal dinner, in front of 40 friends and 1,500 people, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.” Here she shares some of her favourite moments from their big day... 41
Our table plan was printed on an A3 board that had a wintry backdrop. We carried the theme across to the table names, place card and menus. Andrew and I visited a few venues around the local area, and once we discovered De Vere Selsdon Estate allowed outside catering, we knew it was the place for us. I’d been to a wedding there about 10 years ago and had enjoyed some spa days there, so I was pretty much sold. Once Andy saw it, he fell in love and by the second visit we was sure it was the one. The parking facilities, décor and the fact our guests could stay the night were great selling points. Our coordinator, Bianca Gardener, went above and beyond and we can’t thank her enough for her help.
We went for a tasteful winter wonderland theme for our big day. We had a balloon arch, artificial candles lining the stairs, lights trailing from the ceiling to look like icicles, silver sashes and plinths to bring the theme together.
Andrew decided to make our delicious wedding cake.
Robert Kursy Catering provided a three-course sit-down meal with soup to start, a roast dinner for main and a choice of two puddings. In the evening, we had a buffet of English and Caribbean food. Our caterer went above and beyond to make our day special, and we were really pleased with their service. 42
In keeping with our wintry theme, we had large glass vases filled with crystals and white hanging flowers.
REAL WEDDINGS
I wore a full-length lace dress trimmed with diamantes and crystals from Elizabeth James Bridal. I accessorised with a fur coat, veil, shoes, jewellery and a tiara. My gown took up all the space in the lift at the hotel, and only the maid-of-honour was able to squeeze in with me, so it took several trips to get the bridal party down to leave for the ceremony!
To transport us to the venue, we hired a beautiful vintage car from Shirley Chauffeurs.
My maid-of-honour opted for a lace dress with a white fur wrap, and the bridesmaids had a similar gown with chiffon at the bottom.
Andrew chose a royal blue Ted Baker tails suit from Moss Bros. His tie and waistcoat were a different colour and design to the groomsmen to help him stand out.
As our guests entered the venue, they were entertained by our saxophonist, Chris ‘Zay’ Williams. He played throughout the dinner as background music, and in the evening we had two live singers and club DJ, Nino Browne. Our friends and family couldn’t stop talking about our choice of entertainment and were overwhelmed by the whole experience.
We were really happy with the whole day, and it turned out better than we anticipated. 43

iran and Michael met online in 2016. “We started talking, but the conversation fizzled out, and it wasn’t until a drunken phone call six months later than we reconnected,” says Kiran. “We met for the first time at a Costa near my work, and we began dating shortly after. We got on really well, and the conversation flowed naturally. He was also incredibly supportive during my period of illness at the start of our relationship.” Michael popped the question in their flat on 29th August, 2019. “We’d discussed wedding dates before and thought 29th August, 2020 sounded perfect,” shares the bride. “I was surprised as I knew we were heading towards an engagement but was oblivious that it would happen that day! He even went through the trouble of asking my dad the night before and creating a custom-made engagement ring. I ruined his plans a bit as I decided to work from home that day, but had a hair appointment in the afternoon, so he re-arranged the flat and laid out candles and pictures of us in the 30 minutes I was gone.”
SETTING THE SCENE “We instantly fell in love with Foxhills Country Club & Resort during our viewing in 2019,” explains Kiran. “The outside was picturesque, and the interior was the perfect fit for our intimate ceremony. One thing that made the decision easy for us was the flexibility of the staff. They were more than happy to change their packages to accommodate us. We did see some other properties in the area, but we didn’t get the same feeling from them, and they weren’t as accommodating to our needs.” The couple decided to go with a white and red colour scheme. “We chose white to represent Michael’s British culture and red for my Indian heritage,” explains Kiran. “We had six white candles lining the aisle, silk petals scattered on the floor and a draping floral arrangement on the registrar’s table. The main arrangement was a central flower wall with white silk flowers and red draping. We all sat on one large oval table in household bubbles, and every guest had their own card and personalised shot glass with a Ferrero Rocher inside.” Their big-day bake was made by Ann’s Designer Cakes. “We placed it on a stand in the corner of the orangery,” shares Kiran. “It was a one-tier design made up of mango and passionfruit with buttercream icing, silk flowers and a Mr & Mrs cake-topper.” Kiran and Michael chose blooms to match their theme from Cathey’s Flowers. “I left it all up to our florist and asked her to base her decisions around our colour scheme, and she didn’t disappoint,” says the bride. “We were incredibly lucky that she understood our vision and took control of the arrangements for us.” The lovebirds decided to make their stationery. “We couldn’t find anything online that suited our theme,” explains Kiran. “We chose red for the writing and got everything printed on soft sheen ivory cardstock at Wowvow. We’re so grateful that they were able to print our designs so quickly.” For the meal, they chose roasted red pepper soup to start, beef or chicken roast for main and a chocolate or 47

strawberry torte for dessert. The happy couple created hampers for guests who were staying at the hotel. “Upon check-in, they received some goodies,” shares the bride. “We filled each hamper with paracetamol, hand sanitiser, confectionery, water, fluffy socks and personalised chocolates.”
DRESSED TO IMPRESS Kiran wore a gorgeous limited-edition dress. “My gown was heavily embroidered, so I decided to wear subtle jewellery,” says Kiran. “I chose a necklace, earrings, Indian bangles, a bag and shoes from Rainbow Club.” Michael and the groomsmen opted for blue suits. “He chose a custom waistcoat and shirt from Edit Suits Co,” explains the bride. “He purchased the remainder of the suit from Next, with cufflinks from Moss Bros, a tie from Calvin Klein and shoes from Clarks.”
TIME TO CELEBRATE “There was no formal entertainment,” shares Kiran. “Instead, Michael’s brother, James, put together a playlist as background music that everyone liked.”
MEMORABLE MOMENTS “I felt very calm on the morning of the wedding, but as we approached midday, my nerves increased as I didn’t know what to expect,” Kiran shares. “The best part of the day was seeing Michael at the altar. I instantly felt calm and ready. He had a quivering bottom lip and struggled to get his words out during the service, which made me feel overwhelmed as Michael never normally cries.” The couple’s family and friends made their nuptials perfect. “My dad brought a camera with him and was standing with the professionals trying to get good shots throughout the day” adds the bride. “From my side of the family, it was only my mum, dad and sister there, so getting to walk down the aisle with my dad was a special moment that I’ll cherish forever. My sister was my rock in the weeks leading up to the wedding and she did her best to keep me calm. I’m grateful to have an older sister as nurturing as her.” “It was so lovely to share our special day with everyone,” explains Michael. “Our photographers from PhotoForrester were amazing. Elliott made us feel relaxed and went above and beyond by sorting things on the day with the venue and registrars.”
HONEYMOON “Due to work commitments and not wanting to risk a quarantine on our return we had a mini-moon in the Cotswolds,” reveals Kiran. “It was a lovely week where we relaxed and reminisced about our wedding day. We distilled our own gin, attempted archery and tried some new things.”

FALL IN
Sarah and Anthony had a laid back autumnal celebration at Cain Manor Images courtesy of Jessica Grace Photography
S
arah and Anthony first laid eyes on each other at work. “We felt an attraction right away,” says Sarah. “We worked together closely and became part of the same friendship group. After being close for a few years, at a friend’s birthday party we realised the attraction was mutual and decided to go on our first date. It went great, and we’ve been together ever since.” Seven years later, Anthony popped the question. “We were sat in our garden on a warm summer’s evening with our little dog, Maud, enjoying a drink from our holiday in Puglia,” shares the bride. “It was a very intimate and low key proposal, which suited us perfectly.” Here Sarah shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

Jeni’s Cakes & Flowers provided our big-day blooms. We knew we wanted them to look quintessentially autu mn, colourful but rustic and not too large. Jeni did an absolutely amazing job. She really understood our style and what we wanted. The arrangemen ts were a combination of sunflowe rs, anemones, blue thistles, roses and foliage. We then re-used some of the ceremony flowers for our centrepi eces. We placed them in old gin bottles and jam jars surrounded by low-lev el candles.
Jeni also made our cakes. Our tast ing session was one of the best par ts of wedding planning. Anthony is gluten-free, so both our cakes wer e made to accommodate him, but you wou ldn’t have known! We had a two -tier naked bake; one tier was flavoure d orange, and the other was a Vict oria sponge decorated with fresh frui t. We also had a Bundt cake that was cinnamon flavoured with orange drizzle and embellished with figs and berries. 54
We chose to donate to Prostate Cancer UK and gave pin badges to each of our guests. My dad spent several years battling prostate cancer and unfo rtunately passed away from it just before the wedding. This was one way we felt we could honour him and keep him in our hearts on the day.
We had a pillar candle that we lit near the cakes in memory of my dad and had photos of our families framed and dotted around the venue. We also hired a company called Party Lights to drape a canopy of fairylights in the main hall.
REAL WEDDINGS
Anthony opted for a dark blue three-piece tweed suit from Walker Slater. He accessorised with an orange pencil tie, a tailored white shirt and boots.
Cain Manor provided all the food and the tasting session was good fun. Dean looked after us, and we were lucky enough to have him as the wedding manager on our day. We chose butternut soup to start, seabass with Mediterranean style vegetables for the main and crumble for dessert. We had an evening buffet of bacon and vegetable baps and a cheeseboard. The venue was very accommodating with food intolerances and preferences.
I wore a design by Louise Bentley called Edie. It was the first dress that caught my eye at my appointment at BOA Boutique in Richmond. I liked how simple it was and the fact it wasn’t a full-length gown or too short. I was looking for something that I would feel comfortable in and move around easily, and this dress fit the bill perfectly. I had my hair in a simple bun and styled with a beautiful vine from Miss Clemmie and opted for Rainbow Club shoes for the day and golden Keds by Kate Spade in the evening.
For the entertainment, we hired a band called Ceilidh Tree. We wanted something that everyone could get involved in and meant different groups would mix and have a bit of a laugh. We had been to a couple of weddings with a Ceilidh band, and they’ve always been great fun. The band had played at our friend’s wedding, so we knew we were getting the best.
I had my sister as my bridesmaid. I wanted her to feel comfortable as she had a baby a few months before the wedding, so we chose a beautifu l teal knee-length gown from Seraphine.
I felt a bit nervous but mainly exci ted to put my dress on and see our friends. Meeting Antony at the bottom of the stairs and walking into the ceremony together was a lovely moment. After an emotion al ceremony our exit music lightened the mood, we play ed, Let’s get ready to Rhumble, which got a few laug hs from our guests and felt right given my new last nam e.

EXPERT ADVICE
HOT TOPIC: WEDDING WORRIES
www.irockvisuals.com
Our experts solve your problems
THE LOOK OF LOVE
Q – What questions should we ask our photographer before booking? It’s always really important that you get a great vibe from your photographer and love their work before committing to them. Any opening questions you ask a photographer should be met with a warm welcome and a clear indication, such as what’s included within your package and what you’ll pay in terms of deposit. You should talk to your supplier about their style and the type of shots you want for your wedding. They should also have public liability insurance, so if you’re not sure, then ask. Find out what they cover in the event of a cancellation or emergency. Your photographer should agree to re-schedule at no extra cost. Ask to see examples of their work if you feel you haven’t seen enough. They should be more than happy to provide you with this. It’s always good to try and get to know as much as possible about your chosen supplier. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and relaxed. They are, after all, capturing one of your most special days. Eray Kaya Photographer www.irockvisuals.com
PLANNING SOS
Q – Our summer wedding can’t go ahead due to COVID-19, so we’re planning to get married next Christmas instead. What should we ask our venue before changing our date? Every venue will have a different approach to how they’re handling wedding date changes, and as your contract lies with the venue, you will be guided by the experts on how and when you can alter your date. As you won’t be the only couple in this situation, and with many weddings more than likely reserved for next year already, speaking to your wedding team directly, sooner rather than later, would be advisable. You might want to ask about flexibility for a date change if the current COVID-19 situation continues, or if you’re keen to get married soon, you might wish to consider holding a more intimate ceremony now and book a larger reception later down the line when number restrictions have been lifted. Stay positive and remember why you chose your wedding venue in the first place. Although your big day might not take place on the date you originally chose, hopefully, you’ll still be able to have your dream wedding at your chosen venue in the near future. Here at Farnham Castle, we’re doing everything we can to rearrange our couples dates to ensure when their wedding does take place, that it will be exactly as they’ve always dreamed. Venue teams work tirelessly to ensure that you and your guests have a truly magical experience and are left with incredible memories. Francesca Cribb Farnham Castle www.farnhamcastle.com 67

Q – We’d love some outdoor shots of our winter wedding. Do you have any ideas of how we can get amazing pictures in any weather?
JUST ONE SLICE
Q – My wife-to-be and I want to incorporate the festive season into our wedding cake. Can you suggest any flavours or decorations?
The most important thing to consider with winter weddings is light. As the afternoons grow darker faster there’s a smaller window for light. Seasonal weddings can be a double-edged sword. It can be amazing and give a beautiful golden light, but it can also bring terrific rainstorms. Some tips that I like to tell couples is to have a ‘first look’ before your ceremony. This means that you get to have a special moment as you greet each other for the first time, but it also ensures that you can take advantage of the brighter light of the day, which will ultimately create lovely portraits together. Keep an eye on the weather forecast. If there’s the possibility of rain or snow be prepared. Get some cute welly boots and clear umbrellas. Going out in the wet weather can be fun if you embrace it. Ultimately, the main stress comes from being underprepared, so if you’re well-equipped, then you can weather any storm together. Jessica Grace Photographer www.jessicagracephotography.co.uk
WINTER WONDERLAND
Q – How can we create wintry stationery to tie in with our Christmas wedding?
Do you prefer a more traditional look with reds, greens and golds, or are you after a more modern theme with blues, whites and silvers? Either will make a stunning cake design and tie in with your theme perfectly. If you’ve opted for a more traditional bake, why not incorporate some beautiful shades of red with roses, styled with deep green ivy and holly leaves? Add gold accents with edible gold leaf, which will create a glamorous feel. If this is too bold for you, then pair it back by swapping the red roses for cream roses and bringing in small touches of red with holly berries. Alternatively, those of you who are more swayed towards the winter wonderland style, there are so many shades of blue you could choose from. Keep the flowers simple with an all-white display and let the cake make the impact with some edible glitter or silver leaf that will catch the light beautifully. If you prefer paler blue tones, then look for glitter details, snowflakes embossed into the icing and 3D snowflakes to add depth and dimension. When it comes to what’s inside the cake, why not delight and surprise your guests with some flavours that immediately make you think of Christmas, such as chocolate orange, gingerbread spice or chocolate and Irish cream?
Winter is a wonderful time of year to get married, and there are many ways you can embrace the season through your stationery. Don’t feel tied to bright red berries, Christmas trees or a holly theme. Instead, you could incorporate these festive vibes with wintry blooms or modern greenery details. You might also think about introducing a touch of sparkle to your stationery, either through the use of pearlescent card and envelopes or metallic foils, the options are endless! Greenery is an enduring wedding theme, which works particularly well for winter weddings. This design features the pale blue tones of eucalyptus sprigs and other foliage, together with a modern font it’s a versatile style that would work perfectly for any country venue or barn. If you’re keen to acknowledge the Christmas feel, but without being too festive, then you could consider incorporating some classic colours into your stationery. This menu design (pictured) features beautiful crimson and snow-white watercolour winter roses, rosehips and foliage on a navy background to present a festive three-course menu. This design would lend itself beautifully to signage and other table stationery. There’s something truly festive about stars, particularly if they bring a bit of sparkle too. Jazz up a flat print and add a bit of shine by printing onto pearlescent paper, or go for metallic foil elements to make your stationery shine.

Intimate wedding inspiration
A
s a result of COVID-19, more couples are planning intimate nuptials, so to help you create the perfect celebration, we’ve rounded up some of the regions best suppliers and asked for their top tips on creating a fabulous wedding even with a small guest list.
MEET CELEBRANT, HELEN NOBLE FROM THE CELEBRANT OF SURREY
www.constancedoyle.com
Small but mighty is the way to approach a micro and intimate wedding. Think of it as an upgrade. By having an intimate celebration, you can enhance the experience. Everyone will get the best view of you declaring your love for each other, and you can really feel the support and love in the room. The ceremony is the epicentre of the day, and your stylist and florist will be able to enhance the space. Whether you choose a copper frame, moon gate or balloon arch, your suppliers will want to make your day super special and look amazing. If you place the chairs at your service in a horseshoe shape rather than in straight rows, it will create a more intimate feeling. My 25 years of experience mean I can take ceremonies in any which way. Your suppliers will create the feel, vibe and energy you’re after. It’s not about the number of guests, it’s about the quality of love in the room. Everyone from the suppliers and guests to the couple themselves is devoted to making this day the best one of your lives thus far. Remember you have the power to be picky, so if you find someone who isn’t on board with your vision, give that privileged place to someone who is. You have got through an engagement in a pandemic, your love is already made of strong stuff! The situation hasn’t diluted your feelings or made them fragile, so think strong thoughts and reflect those values you hope to live your marriage by in your vows.

MEET DANCE EXPERT, EMMA BREWER FROM FIRST DANCE LTD
www.robertlongford.com
07966 513 981 | www.firstdancestudios.co.uk The show must go on! This is very much our motto at First Dance Ltd at the moment. We’re open and ready for business and even though guest numbers may be restricted, why not still put on a show? You may not want a full production number, but you can spend some quality time together leading up to the wedding to learn a first dance and surprise your guests. The dance can be as natural or as wacky as you like and if you make sure you get someone to record you on the night, you can live stream it or send it to friends and family all over the world. When choosing your dance teacher, make sure you’re in a well-ventilated studio and that you maintain a twometre distance between you and your teacher. Once the COVID-safe procedures are in place, we guarantee that you’ll have fun and learn a lovely new skill too. For those of you who are nervous about going into a studio, lots of studios offer Zoom lessons too. This might be slightly harder and take more time, but anything is possible! 71

Create a bubble list for your group pictures. This will help avoid any confusion, streamline the process and keep your guests safe. Chat with your venue about suitable places for a big group photo that will allow everyone to socially distance. With fewer guests at your micro wedding, use the extra time to create some amazing images with your photographer. Just because your big day is small doesn’t mean your pictures have to be! Style up your nuptials. There are so many beautiful ideas out there, such as flower walls, balloon arches or even fun face masks. It’s still your big day, and your friends and family will love the chance to celebrate with you in style.

This year has been unprecedented and the pandemic has changed how couples all over the world celebrate their love with friends and family. We’ve put together our tips to help you celebrate your love with elegance and style in a COVID-safe manner within government guidelines. Start your research early and don’t let the pandemic sour your love. Event spaces, wedding guidelines and rules are changing frequently across the country and internationally, so you need to start the planning process as early as possible. This could mean booking your planner early, collating a moodboard, looking for inspiration via wedding magazines and guest considerations. The quicker you have a definite shortlist, the quicker you’ll be able to make bookings
and have your dream wedding before things change again. To ensure your guests are comfortable and safe, make sure your prospective venues have COVID-safe practices. Include these safety measures on your invitations to give friends and family the assurances and comfort they need. Due to limited numbers, focus on the experience for you and your nearest and dearest by creating a memorable and atmospheric day. Think about stimulating the five senses. What are the scents, textures and colours that are dear to you? Consider the look, feel, emotions and memories you want to evoke with your event and plan everything around these themes. Intimate weddings can achieve this cosiness and warmth much easier than grand affairs. Use experienced professionals. Find vendors that understand your vision, whose brand aligns with the look and feel of your wedding and whose work you love, so you can trust them to do a superb job. For all vendors, be sure to read the contract and fine print. You want to be sure your interests are covered if the government makes changes or if a vendor has a COVID-19 emergency.

INSPIRATION FLOWERS MEET CAKE MAKER, SHENAZ LAKE-THOMAS FROM LAKE THOMAS CAKES 02089 428 782 | www.ltcakes.co.uk As we’re facing challenging times, don’t give up. You can still have the cake of your dreams, even at a small wedding. Scale your bake down. Smaller creations look just as effective but are more cost-effective. Naturally, you’ll have fewer guests celebrating your big day, but other people who were unable to attend can still have a slice if you wish to distribute it. If you feel your creation is too small, then consider having some fake tiers made. This will make it look bigger, and your guests won’t even realise some are not real. Cupcakes and individual cakes are the perfect alternative to a grand design. These can be displayed on a tower and can be used as a dessert for your guests. When it comes to flavours, if you want your bake to last, you could consider having a fruit cake. If you choose to have a large creation, this can be cut and frozen, and when it’s thawed out will taste amazing. Decorative pieces such as flowers and toppers can be added to a smaller design and look just as effective as it would on a bigger cake. Discuss your ideas with your supplier, and they will be able to offer you suggests on how you can save money and create a gorgeous design.
OUR TOP TIPS ON CHOOSING A FLORIST When it comes to your flowers, keep things simple. Your big-day blooms are a great way of showing your personalities and incorporating your chosen theme or colour scheme. There are a wide variety of arrangements available, and by using them on a smaller scale, you’ll be able to save money. Keep in mind that some flowers are seasonal and may be difficult to source or too expensive to purchase at different times of the year. If you have your heart set on a particular flower, talk to your florist and ask if there are any alternatives or if there’s any way you can purchase artificial versions. These often look great and can be preserved as a memento of your special day. Although your wedding is small, it doesn’t mean you can’t make the space beautiful. Look for table arrangements, flower walls, bouquets, buttonholes and flower crowns. The list is endless. Skim through social media and magazines to try and find inspiration and show your findings to your chosen supplier, so they have something to work with. 75

his gorgeous shoot took place at the Victorian Warren House. The stylist and organiser, Jessica Fasciano from The Italian Dream Weddings and Events tells us: “The concept for our shoot was fresh mint. We wanted to create a luxurious and elegant look with a fresh twist for couples that want to tailor their big day. What brought me to develop this project is the fact black brides are often underrepresented, so I wanted to focus on our lovely models and add a trendy colour to create a modern, chic shoot.” 77

ith intimate weddings being the only option for couples in the current situation, a team of talented suppliers worked together to create this stunning set of images, layered with thoughtful touches, greenery and natural foliage. We spoke to the celebrant, Helen Noble, to find out more. “Having the great team of suppliers that Becky from I Do Handmade put together enabled me to choreograph and direct the ceremony to ensure Pearce Wedding Photography could move around us easily from a safe distance. The shoot was held in the gardens of The Barn Hotel, the perfect location for intimate and medium-sized events. The property has many private corners and the outdoor spaces play host to a variety of perfect photo opportunities.” The models were real couple, Jemima and Carl. “Their big day had been affected by the pandemic, and they were, like so many couples, in limbo waiting to see what they were able to do,” shares Helen. “To be able to give them some personalised ceremonial content and design touches meant they felt the suppliers were 100 per cent on board, and we created a day that felt really special and celebrated their union. We all got a bit teary with joy!” To decorate the space, the team used a variety of rustic elements. “The copper framed backdrop from I Do Handmade, woven with faux white roses and greenery put the couple at the focal point during the outdoor ceremony,” explains Helen. “The table for two was dressed using a copper hoop and handmade Mr & Mrs blocks. We loved working with The Dandelion Art, who provided the hand-lettered banner, and Peggy & Patina for the stunning floral table display.” “Church buildings had closed their doors during the pandemic, but it was important for Jemima and Carl to have their faith expressed,” adds Helen. “Therefore, they chose a bible passage which they read to each other as their vows, that were beautifully presented by The Dandelion Art as a keepsake. As an independent celebrant, I can invite prayer, blessings and all those present to join in if they wish to do so.” Inside the barn, the handmade favours were provided by Bomboniere by Maria, and the two dressing tables were finished off with gold diamante trim charger plates and candle holders from Borrowed Hire. “Betty Bee Bakes created the stunning cake, and Bish Bosh Becca chose a statement pair of silver wire and pearl earrings and a matching cuff bracelet to tie the theme together,” Helen says. “The dress from Matchimony was a white strapless design with edged corded lace and a billowing chiffon skirt, and the hair accessories were hand-beaded with glass beads and pearls from Bunny Loves Evie.” To finish the look hair and make-up artist, Gemma Louise Bridal used waves on Helen to complement Jemima's relaxed dress, so that the sense of style threaded through the look of the day. Jemima’s look was later changed into a loose up do, with neutral make-up to enhance her natural beauty. “It was a shoot of love and devotion as well as style and design,” adds Helen. 83

REGIONAL SHOOT

hen this winter inspired shoot landed in our inbox, we just knew our readers would love it. We spoke to the florist, Rhoda Bouaziz from Rhoda Louisa Floral Events to find out more: “This is about a journey and taking the positives from an unusual word event that has struck us all in many ways. Reading the book The Secret by Rhonda Byrne and watching the movie Dare to Dream inspired me to find like-minded suppliers to collaborate with that also put their heart and soul into their work. Our romantic winter shoot highlights these inspirational people who came together with their vibrant energy and skills to create naturally styled scenes. Great Fosters provided the fabulous backdrop to overflowing British greenery, a pre-worn iconic gown, and clothing fit for the most peacock-like grooms, creating an anthology of ideas for those planning their nuptials. Trying to be as environmentally friendly as possible, naturally, I decided to use foam-free, British farmed flowers and sustainable techniques, including some charity shop finds! I’m ever so grateful to Great Fosters, all the creative talents, models and amazing suppliers for agreeing to work with me on this project.” Kerry J Tuckett from Very Me adds: “The dress is Liesel by Vera Wang, soon to be dyed and recreated into a cocktail dress. We removed the tulle at the top, lace from the lower godet, and more than a hundred metres of crin, nets and tulle to allow an ethereal feel to the movement of the dress. A simple two boned petticoat from www.jupon.com gave the model room to move with all these layers. I knew as soon as it landed in my workroom that Sophie would be the perfect model for it. With Rhoda’s ideas for the shoot, I was determined that the man’s clothing needed to reflect her vision, but also be sympatico of the grandeur of Great Fosters. Anthony Blay had a great selection to choose from. Clashing patterns being very much in vogue on the catwalk, the dark grey check, the floral and fruit patterned shirt were a must. Even the tie has a jacquard weave, rich burgundy shoes topped off the look, purely a mistake, the white socks seem to be the correct thing, when seen all together. Overall, Adam looked young and on-trend. The second suit is more suave and sophisticated, but still, the floral theme shows that it’s not only the bride who can be individual on the day.”

THE CROWN AND THE David Emanuel shares his top tips to help you say “yes” to the dress
n w o g F
ashion designer and broadcaster David Emanuel is a much-loved household name, regarded as the don of bridal fashion since creating that iconic wedding dress for Lady Diana Spencer 40 years ago. CWM’s Kelly Andrews caught up with him at the launch of Bromley Brides’ new Wonder Room to find out about his plans for celebrating this career milestone.

What advice would you give to a bride-to-be setting foot inside a bridal boutique for the very first time? Try to keep an open mind and be objective. Think about what you’ve got at home. You might have an evening dress and you love the shape. So, why don’t you think about that same shape for your wedding dress? A lot of brides get completely wound up, particularly the ones who’ve over-shopped. When they tell me they’ve tried on 200 dresses, there’s clearly something wrong there. Equally, they might come in with a set idea – “I want skin tight, I want sexy.” It’s interesting, as it changes. I’ll say to them, “Put it on and look in the mirror. On your wedding day, are you going to be comfortable?” Then of course, you’ve got to take the time of year into account, where it’s happening, where the party’s going to be and all of that.
102
What do you need to consider before you start shopping? It’s all to do with the personality and character of the bride. If she’s a showy girl, that’s lovely, put her in a showy frock, but if she’s quiet, put her in something more modest. I go back mostly to Say Yes To The Dress, when the first question I ask is: “Do you have a budget?” She might say £3,000 and we can stretch to various styles with that. Then she’ll say, “I want more,” at which point the mother pipes up saying she’ll throw in another thousand. If they’d just said that in the beginning it would have been an
FASHION INTERVIEW easier task. I tell you, that show kept me on my toes!
It doesn’t have to be fantasy; you need simplicity for longevity.
What are the common pitfalls that brides should avoid when dress shopping? Invariably, brides will go on the internet and they’ll see these very glamourous models wearing these fabulous dresses, and they’ll rip pages out of magazines, but are they being realistic? Look in the mirror and be honest with yourself, try to be objective. I know it’s difficult, but look at yourself and think: what do I really want? You’ll go through various stages; you’re not going to get the first dress. I’ll suggest something, and the bride might say she couldn’t possibly, but I’ll insist she slip into it. Once she realises how great she looks, we go down a different path. So, keep an open mind, and let the girls at the boutique do their job, which is to make you look wonderful. You’ve got to trust them. Don’t forget: they’ve dressed hundreds of brides.
Do you think the Covid-19 pandemic has had an effect on the way brides think? I think, if anything, it’s got to completely focus the brides, because they’re under pressure. They might have booked, then have to unbook, and they’ve got to replan. It’s changing by the day – guest numbers are limited, but you know what? That’s not a bad thing actually. Let’s think about it: you don’t have to worry about auntie Flossie and uncle Albert who you only see once every two years! All that pressure is gone. You really should want just the people who love you to be there. Then, if you want to have a bigger party next year, or whenever, the heat is taken off. It should be a joyous time, enjoy it.
Based on your experience on Say Yes To The Dress UK, what’s your take on the ever expanding bridal entourage? Too much! You might have six people, with six points of view, six different tastes. No, we’re concerned with the bride. Sometimes, even the bride’s mum can’t get it, so you’ve got to rely on the very good stylists at your boutique, who are there to help you.

What are your tips for creating the ultimate timeless look? You want to keep it relatively simple, but dramatic. You see, an iconic wedding gown has to have something about it – Diana’s was a 25ft train. Well, it needed drama, this was St Pauls, it was enormous, you couldn’t do a simple, quiet little dress. Or like Meghan’s gown – the story on that dress was the embroidered flowers from the Commonwealth. Big veil, but that was her message, and that was a simple dress.
Tell us about your involvement with Bromley Brides. When I found out (owner) Becky Griggs had been planning to expand and was still going ahead, I thought that was really courageous. I was blown away by the store the first time I came here, it looks great. I like people who take risks, good for her! The Wonder Room is camp and mad, great for a party. Get the dress, then celebrate it! It’s the 40th anniversary of Princess Diana’s iconic wedding dress next year. Do you have any plans to mark the occasion? I never thought I’d be sitting here talking about 40 years! I don’t know where the time’s gone, it’s like a dream. A lot has happened in my life, and this is a very exciting time. We’ve been bombarded by people wanting to do interviews and documentaries, so we’ve got to sit down, let the dust settle and go through everything. When I travel the world, designing Diana’s wardrobe is my calling card – everyone knows who I am because of it. Everywhere I go, people talk very highly of her, and it’s exciting that people still want to do something for her. What was it like to work with Princess Diana? She was the sweetest girl, as divine as you saw
her, no different. It wasn’t all done for the TV and press, she really was lovely. One time we were doing a fitting at Buckingham Palace and we didn’t have our van with us that day, so she asked us how we were getting back. We were planning to call a black cab, but she insisted on taking us herself. She had this little Ford, so we climbed in - Diana driving, me in the front and Elizabeth in the back. It was hysterical, when we stopped at traffic lights, people were aghast. There she was, giggling, it was so much fun. That’s what I remember about her, the fun. I was very fortunate, very honoured and lucky to design several foreign tours for her, and there were a lot of clothes to be done. She’d ring on a Monday and say, “Hi, it’s me.” She’d go on to say that she’d got something special and had nothing to wear, so I quickly had to think. We’d turn up the next day with sketches and some fabrics, and by Friday it was all wrapped and sent for her to wear that evening. We had to turn it around fast, and do you know, without fail she’d always say, “Thank you so much, I know you worked so hard.” It was touching. If you’re lucky along this road, you’ll meet one or two special people and she was one of them. You’ve dressed plenty of famous bodies over the years, who was your most memorable? I was in Paris, as Elizabeth Taylor couldn’t come to London for a fitting. She was at the George V Hotel in a huge suite, and I put her in a chocolate brown Chantilly lace cocktail dress. She looked fabulous and I didn’t have to put one pin in it. She threw open the double doors, and burst through them crying, “Franco, Franco, what do you think?” There he was, Franco Zeffirelli, the film director! All I could think was: “OK David, keep calm.” He loved the dress, but, she said, there was just one little problem. She would be wearing it to the White House and might have to dance with the President, but wasn’t sure she could. With that I grabbed her and spun her around the whole suite. “I think I can dance in this dress,” she said when we stopped waltzing. Listen, when those eyes fixed on you it was all over. She was special, she was real. It’s magic, private moments like that, which make your career, they’re precious. As I’m saying it, I could be back there, it seems like yesterday. Yet, I can’t believe… 40 years!

SANTA BABY
Q – I want to incorporate my love of Christmas into mine and my bridesmaids’ accessories. Do you have any suggestions? Getting married at Christmas is a great way of incorporating this magical season into your wedding. Add rich colours and textures to your bridal party’s look and decorate the venue with plenty of wintry flowers, roaring fires, seductive candlelight and red wine. Popular hues for this time of year are rich burgundy, champagne white, gold and rich green but the choices are limitless from emerald and blue to grey, pink and silver. Small and delicately arranged red holly branches could be incorporated into your hair accessories and bouquet. White combined with darker shades work well this time of year, so take advantage of it. Your bridesmaids could go big on their accessories but don’t forget about the groom. The traditional white buttonhole could be replaced with berries or velvet poinsettia, which has a natural rich burgundy colour. Grey or burgundy suits looks fabulous this time of year, especially when decorated with purple or pink buttonholes. When choosing your bridal gown, don’t let white be your only option. If you like gold, champagne or any other off-white shades, then don’t be afraid to go for it. Look for dresses with long, lacy sleeves, gold elements or perhaps a gorgeous crystal sash. The mother-of-the-bride or groom can also shine by wearing rich velvety tones and deep colours.

WALKING IN A WINTER WONDERLAND Q – I’m looking for a dress that will keep me warm at my December wedding while still being fashionable. Do you have any suggestions of what I should look for?
SNOW IS FALLING
Q – I’d love to incorporate seasonal colours into my hair and make-up. Do you have any ideas? For an atmospheric winter wedding, consider wearing white, silver and lots of sparkle. A strong lipstick is always a good option and will ensure you don’t end up looking too pale. If you’re having a Christmas wedding, opt for reds and golds and top off your outfit with a white velvet cape. Linda Leonard Hair and make-up artist www.lindaleonard.co.uk 104
A bespoke velvet gown would be perfect for a winter celebration. Choose a soft, ivory velvet trim with luxurious faux fur and subtle hand-beading that will look magical when the crystals catch the light. We often make velvet capes for our winter brides, and they always look fabulous, especially if the hood is trimmed in faux fur. Opt for a gown with sleeves. You could choose a detachable top that you can be removed in the evening to create two different looks. Fabrics like silk satin or Mikado work well for this time of year. Corded or guipure lace looks fabulous, especially with hand-beaded crystals and seed pearls. A long simple veil will enhance your look. The finest and softest tulle will allow your gown to be seen and create a sense of mystery and drama. Alternatively, you could opt for a bespoke veil with coordinating embellishments.
