Shropshire venue, Walcot Hall have appointed Caviar & Chips as their residency caterers for weddings and events in 2021. Set in 30 acres of countryside, the Georgian house was once owned by Clive of India and was rescued from demolition in the late 1920s. Luke Whitney, the estate manager at Walcot Hall, said: “We’re excited to appoint Caviar & Chips as resident caterers for our weddings and events. BARNUTOPIA, SY10 9BS 01691 791 624 | www.barnutopia.com Barnutopia has a long history and was originally based at Park Hall Army Camp outside Oswestry. It was later moved to Tanycoed Farm in the 1970s and was used as a space for cattle. The current owners then took over the property in 2015 after it had stood empty for 20 years. Following a successful planning application to expand as a wedding venue, the owners have continued to add to the site to create a luxurious setting. The barn is wood-clad on one side and connects to the opensided Dutch barn on the other. There are large sliding doors that open directly onto the yurt field that offer views of the Gyrn Moelfre and breathtaking Shropshire countryside.
CELEBRATE IN STYLE The Yurt Field and The Dell aren’t licensed for ceremonies but can each accommodate 120 guests. The Event Barn is also available with room for 120 friends and family. Couples that choose to tie the knot outside can retire to the
Farmhouse Dining Room to complete the legal component of their wedding. This charming space can accommodate up to eight nearest and dearest. For 2021, Barnutopia has set up a tiered headcount package that can accommodate up to 15 for micro weddings, 30 for mini-celebrations, 45 for midi-nuptials and 100 for maxi weddings. icola and Craig met in a local bar. “It was Christmas 2012, and we were both out for the evening with our friends,” says Nicola. “As it was Craig’s 30th birthday celebration, he was in fancy dress as Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story. I had no idea who he was supposed to be, and his sense of humour was the main thing that attracted me to him.” Five years after they met, Craig popped the question at their favourite restaurant. “We were enjoying our meal when Craig got up to go to the bathroom and asked me to order him a cheesecake,” shares the bride. “Five minutes later, he came back dressed as Buzz Lightyear singing! The other dinner guests joined in with him, and he surprised me by asking me to be his wife.” Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

My flowers were ivory roses, and the bridesmaids had bouquets of gypsophila.
Just driving up the driveway, we knew The Ashes Barns was a special place. The barns have oak beams, stable doors, polished oak floors and look beautiful without being dressed.
We decorated the venue with flowers, tea lights, wicker hearts and light-up love letters.
Jenkinsons Caterers provided a carrot and coriander soup and roast pork with mash, cabbage and leak. On each table, one guest was selected to wear a Buzz Lightyear apron and hat and carve the meat. 30
Our cake was three tiers and decorated with ribbon and diamantes from Annie’s Cakes of Art. It was filled with chocolate, lemon and Victoria sponge. In front of the bake, we placed a toy Buzz Lightyear and Jessie from Toy Story.
REAL WEDDINGS
I wore a fitted strapless dress called Oringo by Pronovias from Bridal Couture by Josephine. It felt lovely, and I didn’t want to take it off. I accessorised with a sparkly belt and long veil.
The bridesmaids chose long navy dresses from Chi Chi London, and the younger girls wore ivory stain tulle dresses from Next.
Craig opted for a Ted Baker suit with a navy polka dot tie.
On the morning of the wedding, I was nervous but at the same time strangely calm. I found out I had pneumonia just before the wedding, but nothing was going to stop me getting married! Jessica Mair Hair & Makeup Artist did a super job at making sure I looked amazing.
We hired Main Course – The Singing Waiters to surprise everyone. We were so excited to see everyone’s reactions, they set an amazing atmosphere, and our guests loved them. In the evening, we had a live band called Warning Tones perform. They had our loved ones on their feet from the first song. They were professional and lovely guys. Craig had even arranged to secretly sing with them! 31

The love of my life After having to cancel their wedding due to the pandemic, Martha and Daniel planned their big day at Macdonald Ansty Hall in just six weeks Images courtesy of Alice & Grace Photography

REAL WEDDINGS
M
artha and Daniel met at a pub in Meriden. “Since that first meeting, we’ve been inseparable,” says Martha. “We met up every day following our first date and found we had lots in common. We love rugby, with Dan supporting Wasps RFC and me supporting Exeter Chiefs, so we spent our third date at a local game.” Daniel popped the question during a trip to Rhodes for Martha’s birthday. “The day before my birthday we went quad biking and planned to drive down to Lindos, but it was so hot, and the bike was quite slow, so we didn’t make it,” shares the bride. “Dan then suggested we go back out in the evening, which I thought was strange but went along with it. We went to Kallithea Beach and found a cliff you could climb up, so we made our way to the top to watch the sunset. We were taking pictures of the view when Dan asked me to stand on the edge so he could take a photo of me. I didn’t think anything of it, and when I turned around, he was on one knee with the ring in this hand. I was so shocked and instantly cried. It was perfect.”
SETTING THE SCENE “We originally wanted to get married at Kalithea Springs, which was next door to where we got engaged,” explains Martha. “We spent a couple of days there and had our big day booked for May 2020, however, the pandemic meant we had to cancel. We were heartbroken, and unfortunately, our travel provider wanted extra money to change it to next year, which we couldn’t afford. We still wanted to get married this year if we could since everything was planned and ready to go. Dan knew of Macdonald Ansty Hall, and I had driven past it a few times and loved the look it. We booked it six weeks before the wedding and are so glad we did! The venue was perfect for us, and with all the uncertainty, we just wanted to be married and have a special day. It’s definitely a story to tell the grandchildren!” The couple decided to give their guests Cancer Research pins as wedding favours. “Cancer is something that’s affected both our families,” Martha adds. “It meant a lot to us to be able to give money to them.” Due to the pandemic, the lovebirds were unable to have a traditional table plan. “Since we had limited numbers, we decided on a U-shaped table, so that all our guests could interact with each other,” says the bride. “For our cake, we chose to have a fruit cake and Victoria sponge and a tier for each.” Martha and Daniel chose fishbowl centrepieces. “We found them on Facebook Marketplace,” explains Martha. “I decorated them with artificial flowers and lights that looked great. For our flowers, we chose traditional roses and alstroemeria from The Village Flower Shop. I wanted soft colours and the pinks and whites went well with the bridesmaids’ dresses.” To decorate the space, the couple hired Twinkles and Tiaras to put up a lace backdrop, blossom trees and cream carpet for the ceremony. “I wanted my dad to drive me to the venue, so we arrived in his car,” says the bride. “We only live 10 minutes away, so it made sense, and I didn’t want to wear a mask in the car.”
DRESSED TO IMPRESS Martha wore a dress from Cotton and Lace. “I loved it so much, and as soon as I put it on I just knew it was the one,” says Martha. “I had no idea what style I wanted and thought I wanted a fitted gown, but this dress was so different and made me feel amazing.” Dan chose a tailored suit from Moss Bros. “He was originally going 35

TIME TO CELEBRATE “We kept it quite simply and just had a Spotify playlist which I put together,” shares Martha. “My brother also created a game of Mr & Mrs that we played with our shoes, which kept everyone entertained after the speeches.”
MEMORABLE MOMENTS “I was so nervous that I didn’t sleep the night before,” Martha shares. “I just couldn’t believe it was finally happening. You dream about your wedding and never did I think that a global pandemic would cancel our plans. It just felt so surreal, during all the panic you forget that you will actually be married and that night it hit me, and I was so emotional. As soon as I saw Dan, I felt a sigh of relief, not that I didn’t think he would be there, just that he made me feel instantly relaxed and happy.” The weather turned out perfect for their big day. “We were able to take some amazing photos in the garden with Alice & Grace Photography,” adds the bride. “Macdonald Ansty Hall were also fantastic throughout the whole day. Every little detail was planned to perfection, and we were over the moon with how everything turned out.”
HONEYMOON “We, unfortunately, didn’t get a proper honeymoon due to the restrictions,” shares Martha. “Instead we spent two nights in Norfolk, which was perfect. We were so tired and just needed time to relax. We’re hoping to have a proper honeymoon in 2021.”

Weddings at Grendon Court Barn The 18th century Wedding Barn at Grendon Court in south Herefordshire was originally built as a threshing barn, but has now been painstakingly restored to create a magical space for wedding ceremonies, feasting and dancing. Many tiny windows are carved into the sandstone walls, the high ceilings and ancient oak beams contrast with polished concrete floors and contemporary floor-to-ceiling glass entrances to create a rural yet elegant style.
We’d love to show you around the beautiful barn and gardens and to hear about your wedding plans. Please do get in touch if you’d like a brochure, or to book a visit enquiries@grendoncourt.co.uk

What should couples expect when booking your services? Our cars come chauffeur driven, and brides-to-be will be pleased to learn that we take the front passenger seat out, so there’s more room for the all-important dress.

How long before the wedding should couples book? We take bookings up to two years in advance, and although COVID-19 has disrupted 2020 for many couples, we have been happily moving bookings to 2021 and refunding deposits as its been a tough situation for many. We haven’t done as many weddings this year, but we’ve still made sure that brides arrived in style to their ceremony and have been able to enjoy driving around in a cute classic.

MEET JULIE BERESFORD FROM NOTHING BUT WEDDING CARS 07950 233 240 | www.nothingbutweddingcars.co.uk Tell us about your company. We’re a family-run, multi-award-winning wedding car company based in Sutton Coldfield. In 2020, we have won numerous awards including The Wedding Industry Awards 2020, The Wedding Business Awards 2020, The Global Wedding Awards 2020 and we have just been informed that we’re regional finalists in The Wedding Industry Awards 2021. Our warm and friendly approach, attention to detail and customer-centric focus have contributed to our amazing success. What do you offer couples for the big day? We have a fleet of seven outstanding vehicles; three vintage Volkswagen Campervans, a Beetle Cabriolet, a vintage-style Regent Landaulet and two modern cars. If you’re looking for something vintage, quirky or luxurious, then we have something to suit. What should couples expect when booking your services? We’re a professional and customer-centric company. From the initial enquiry, we work with couples to help them plan their dream transport. We offer a flexible approach with multiple trips and multi pick-up options available, if practical, to help keep the costs down. Our customers are at the centre of everything we do, and so we offer a package of extras, at no additional cost, helping to make each wedding extra special. The vehicles are maintained to an exceptional standard and deep cleaned before and after every wedding or viewing appointment.
48
How long before the wedding should couples book? With so many wedding being postponed to 2021 and now 2022, we would highly recommend you book your transport well in advance to avoid being disappointed. A deposit is all that’s required to secure the car of choice, so don’t risk delaying. What are your top tips for couples? Research to find a reputable wedding car company. Check reviews on Trustpilot, Facebook and Google, paying particular attention to reviews written by customers who have had to postpone due to COVID-19, this will give you a good insight into how they perform in challenging situations. Look for a company that has a website as well as a social media presence. Websites take time, effort, and money to build and manage, and are a good indicator of how serious they are about their company and the service they offer. When possible arrange a viewing appointment, as photos can be old or even airbrushed. During the lockdown, reputable companies will offer the option of virtual appointments. If you’re staying at the venue, the transport could be used by your partner, and then you have the benefits of the car for photos and even a romantic drive. If you’re affected by COVID-19, it’s important to liaise closely with your supplier to give them maximum notice of any changes. Take a fair and reasonable approach as you may need to be flexible about the vehicles you can have for your new date. Those of you having micro-weddings, your choice of wedding transport is more important than ever, as it not only provides your transport but is also the backdrop for your photos. There has been some confusion about wearing face masks, as wedding cars are not classed as private hire vehicles, passengers are not required by law to wear a mask, however, some companies may insist that you wear them.

PETS AT WEDDINGS
Q – My wife-to-be and I want to incorporate our beloved dog into our Christmas-themed wedding. Do you have any ideas on how we can do this?
JUST ONE SLICE
Q – We’re having a winter wedding and would love to incorporate the time of year into our cake. How can we do this? I adore winter weddings and love using a range of striking yet warm textures to create a showstopping cake. ❤ Opt for natural textures that you see in winter settings such as pine cones and berries. ❤ Look for bold reds, burgundies and claret. ❤ Dark winter roses, green foliage and a touch of gold will look striking against a bright white or pale ivory sugar paste. ❤ Winter flavours to warm up your wedding cake include spiced carrot with white chocolate, chocolate and ginger and dark chocolate with white chocolate peppermint buttercream. ❤ Complement the cake with unusual themed accessories such as antlers or pheasant feathers. Laura Nolan Cake expert www.nuthousebakery.co.uk
Firstly, you’re not alone in your wish to include your cherished dog at your wedding. It’s fast becoming a popular trend and consequently, more venues are now pet friendly. As a wedding day dog specialist, I have helped many couples include their beloved pet at their wedding. My daughter actually started my business idea off when she asked me to handle her pooch, Spencer, on her big day. Depending on where you’re getting married, you can arrange for your dog to be your ring bearer. Some churches will allow this but not all. This is where I suggest you hire the services of a chaperone. It will take all the stress out of the day if you have someone dedicated to looking after your furry friend. Alternatively, you could have them there for wedding photographs. With the help of a chaperone, none of your guests will spend the day worrying about looking after them. Many couples love to see their pooch arrive all groomed and wearing a flower collar or a silk bow tie with a matching harness and lead. I would say three hours is probably the maximum amount of time for your dog to be with your wedding party. Once dinner is served, your chaperone can depart with your pup to your chosen carer so you can enjoy the rest of your night knowing they’re taken care of. MUSIC OF MY HEART
Q – We want a harpist to play some festive songs at our wedding. Do you have any suggestions that won’t sound tacky or over the top? Whether you want a striking festive song for the entrance of the bride or something more romantic and subtle for the signing of the register and drinks reception, there are so many lovely seasonal options to choose from. Christmas songs often talk of love and are perfect for weddings, evoking a feeling of comfort and wellbeing. Here are some of my suggestions: ❤ Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. ❤ Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire. ❤ When You Wish Upon a Star. ❤ I’m Dreaming Of A White Christmas. ❤ Children’s Christmas films often take us into a fantasy world, and there are some great options full of love and hope, such as As Long As There’s Christmas from Beauty and the Beast and Let It Go from Frozen. ❤ There are lots of traditional songs focusing on the meaning of Christmas that are relaxing and slow, like Away in a manger. ❤ However big or small your wedding, you can be assured that harp music will add to the romantic and intimate atmosphere to make your day extra special. Helen Barley Harpist www.helenbarley.co.uk
FESTIVE SPICES
Q – What flavours would you suggest for our Christmas-themed wedding cake? Christmas is a special time and gives you a wide choice of delicious flavours. ❤ One of my favourites is a Moroccan orange cake, which is very rich and decadent, filled with a raspberry curd buttercream. ❤ A Baileys sponge filled with a light chocolate ganache. ❤ On the more traditional lines, there’s the bakewell, a light almond sponge filled with vanilla bean buttercream and a cherry curd. ❤ Making the most of the season, how about a delicately spiced pumpkin sponge filled with a rich mascarpone cream? ❤ Red velvet is a deep colour and always looks stunning when cut and served to your guests. ❤ I never like to leave out the one that has stood the test of time, the traditional Victoria sponge. Filled with either raspberry or strawberry conserve and vanilla bean buttercream. Jackie Diamond Cake expert www.facebook.com/jackiediamondcakes 54
DRINK IT ALL IN
Q – We want to hire a horsebox bar for our upcoming wedding and would love to incorporate the time of year into our drinks. Do you have any suggestions? Christmas is the most amazing time to get creative, and it’s our favourite time of the year. It’s simple to evoke all the senses with a festive-inspired drinks menu. Why not start with a delicious mulled wine or hot spiced apple juice as your welcome drinks? Not only will this warm your guests, but it smells amazing. If you’re looking for an alcoholic drink, one of our favourites is our Christmas FizzGINgle Cocktail, which is a generous measure of winterberry gin, topped up with prosecco and a sprinkling of fresh berries. Other options include a salted caramel espresso martini or even a white hot chocolate with a white chocolate liqueur to finish off the evening. Christianne Hemming Drinks expert www.chinagrey.co.uk

ith so many different styles and themes to choose from, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed when planning your big day. To help you create the perfect look, we’ve chosen four popular trends and asked local suppliers for their top tips.
Boho chic MEET WEDDING DRESS EXPERT, JENNIFER JAMIESON FROM AVA MAY BRIDAL
www.rosiekelly.co.uk
There are so many ways to interpret the word ‘boho’. If you Google the definition, you’ll find descriptions like ‘unconventional’, ‘arty’ and ‘informal’. I love this theme, and when my partner and I got married, I wanted a more chilled out vibe as I’d been married before and had the full traditional white wedding but it never really felt like me. The best advice I can give to any bride-to-be is to follow your heart. My favourite gowns are always the ones that are a bit different, so don’t be afraid to be you! I would opt for burnt oranges and reds and colourful flowers. For the dress, check out our range from Wilderly Bride, they epitomise femininity and honestly are just so beautiful. Boho can be done indoors or outdoors, but I’m a huge fan of a woodland wedding. Think tipis with firepits and dancing under the stars, this can even be done in your garden! Paint the picture of your dream wedding in your head and just run with it. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune either. Flowers can be picked from gardens and decorations can be homemade. Embrace the unconventional and rock your inner goddess!

The boho look is all about enhancing your natural beauty. A great way to achieve this is by building thin layers of liquid and powder products. Liquid/cream products will create a natural texture, and setting these products with a powder will keep your make-up in place all day. I know ladies with dry skin will be shuddering at the thought of using powder but gone are the days of chalky looking products! I love By Terry’s Hydra-Powder. It’s packed full of hyaluronic acid which will keep your skin fresh. This theme is inspired by nature and the outdoors. One of my favourite products to use for a gorgeous flush on the cheeks is Daniel Sandler’s Watercolour Blushers. Hues to choose from are earthy tones or soft rose petal hues. Pinks have always been one of my most requested bridal looks, as it’s very wearable and exudes femininity. I would also recommend keeping the eyes, cheeks and lips in the same colour family for a harmonised finish. 59
01746 768 968 | www.mylittleweddingshop.co.uk Here at My Little Wedding Shop, we love a vintage vibe, whether it’s the use of perfectly spaced covered buttons, lace detailing or full-length sleeves. The beauty of this theme is how effective it can be when mixed with a modern twist. Having a vintage feel to your wedding doesn’t mean you have to go all out with afternoon tea etc, you can pick out elements you like to complement your individual style. A beautifully tailored bridal gown is timeless and combined with a statement piece of lace is a wonderful way of incorporating a period feel into your outfit. This could be by accessorising with a statement, high collared lace cape or having a panel feature in an otherwise plain dress. Finish with a high-low hemline to bring your design up-todate and show off your beautiful shoes. For a more glamorous inspired look, we love taking inspiration from the 1930s Hollywood scene with a bias-cut. These are perfect for a bride wanting a more fitted silhouette without going for the restrictions of a full mermaid. It’s incredibly comfortable to wear and creates a stunning silhouette that can be complemented with a statement veil instead of a long train. These accentuate the natural curves of your figure and create a flow with the fabric. It works perfectly with a smoky eye and deep coloured lips to add a sultry feel. For a softer look, the ballgown silhouette works perfectly with lace sleeve. The slightly fuller Bishop sleeve is very popular right now, it gathers into a cuff at the wrist to create a very elegant look. Using a more contemporary lace with a symmetrical design is a great way to update this style and can be worn as part of a separate overlay. Combining these ideas along with a bride’s style is what makes creating bespoke bridalwear so much fun and ensures that our brides have a dress that is perfect for their day.

When choosing your dress there are lots of different ways to incorporate colour. Lots of designers now have various shades of blush and nude in their standard ranges alongside the traditional white and ivory. If an overall hue isn’t for you, then think about adding accents through your accessories, veil, headpiece or even an underskirt. For the bride who really wants to go bold, then a bespoke dress would be the perfect solution. For example, you could opt for a brightly coloured lace overlay or add layers for a more subtle look. Many dress designers are now offering embroidery, which is ideal for adding little colourful touches. A non-white dress should be the starting point of your overall theme, using two to four hues will keep your theme nicely balanced or alternatively you could use multiple shades of the same colour. Ensure your chosen gown suits your skin tone and hair. Opt for complementary hues for your flowers and of course your bridesmaids’ dresses.

Modern luxe MEET LOCAL JEWELLER, ELIZABETH TERZZA hello@elizabethterzza.com | www.elizabethterzza.com Modern brides do things their own way, so why not choose something borrowed or something blue when you choose something for you? You might decide to wear a jumpsuit or separates instead of a traditional wedding dress, so make sure you keep it fresh and simple and don’t forget to add a touch of your personal style. It’s your accessories that really complete your look, and it’s so easy to choose classic pearl bridal jewellery, but why not go for something unique and sentimental? You can re-wear your jewellery over and over again so treat yourself to something bespoke that you will cherish forever, a future heirloom with its own story to tell. For example, this beautiful necklace pictured was inspired by a bride’s Italian heritage and her love for olive trees. Get in touch with your local jeweller, and they’ll be able to create something special for you.

07779 279 705 www.stephaniekylesbridal.com Sleeves are the way to go to achieve a modern look. A sleeve can be added onto any dress, but make it a feature, not just a cover-up. Be bold with the design, my personal favourite is the balloon sleeve which is a mixture of ’70s flare and a contemporary twist. Whatever you choose, make sure you keep it clean and classy with a hint of lace detail. Try mixing and matching. Two-piece wedding outfits have been creeping in for a while now, and I think this creates a great current design. You can choose what style skirt and top you want and its a great way to be creative and experiment. A cross between a cape and veil is wings! This trend is just fabulous. Capes can cover up too much of your gown, and a veil isn’t for everyone. Tulle wings can be added to most dresses with straps and sleeves and can easily be detached to create two separate looks. 63

The whole ambience was kept edgy and moody to add a little drama and mystery. With today’s brides being more experimental, we decided to create a look that’s not only striking but also wearable.” 65

The main thing you need are suppliers who have amazing skills and the ability to bring an abstract vision to life.” 73

Hot on the heels of its sell-out Nettle Venom Anti-Ageing Cream, Heaven Skincare has unveiled its Nettle Venom Eyes. This latest addition to the range is 100 per cent plant-based and contains founder Deborah Mitchell’s patented Nettatoxin, which works in the same way as bee venom, but uses only vegan-friendly ingredients. It’s designed to ease puffiness and dark circles around the eyes while relaxing fine lines and wrinkles. When you apply the nettle venom around the delicate eye area, the body’s natural defence kicks in. Of course, there’s no damage, but the skin is tricked into thinking there has been and starts healing, leaving behind tight skin that feels renewed. Priced at £55, it’s available at https://shop.heavenskincare.com

Michael Van Clarke 3 More Inches Volumising Mousse £12.50, www.vanclake.com
“The amount of styling product I go through is staggering. Not because I use a lot, but because I can’t find anything that does what it says on the tin, without making my fine hair greasy, and weighing it down. So, ‘here we go again,’ I thought as I tried this, the next on my quest. But, as soon as I squeezed Waterfall from the tube, I knew it would be different, feeling somehow light in texture. Plus, the fragrance was divine! Designed for fine to medium locks, my hair drank the lotion in, and by the time I blow-dried it, it was super-shiny, light and manageable, with no oily residue to be found. For me, it’s the holy grail of styling products!” – Kelly Andrews
“I’m a bit of a mousse novice, so I’m surprised that the first one I tried I love! It definitely gave my normally fine hair volume. I could feel the difference straight away, from the first use and blowdry. It left my hair soft and silky with no residue left behind – you wouldn’t even know I’d used any product! This is perfect for those brides wanting a naturally voluminous look and feel.” – Danielle Harvey
Philip Kingsley Elasti-Styler 5-in-1 Treatment, £34, www.philipkingsley.co.uk “This new product from Philip Kingsley promises to strengthen, tame and add shine, even to hair that’s hard to manage. My short locks tend to stick out in every direction, but with a small amount of the treatment, I found it very easy to style. I tend to use when my hair’s wet, but it’s also great for styling and taming frizz on dry tresses. My hair smelled great, and I even received a few compliments. I’d highly recommend it.” – Melissa Barker
GREAT HAIR DAYS SheaMoisture Sugarcane Extract & Meadowfoam Seed Silicone Free Miracle Styler £14.99, www.boots.com “Call me a cynic but I’m always a bit dubious of anything billed as a miracle product. However, this leave-in conditioning treatment does exactly what it claims to. Made with a blend of natural botanicals it does it all – detangles, nourishes, softens, adds shine and the list goes on. I put it to the test when I was in dire need of a trim and it worked like magic taming my unruly hair, making it easy to style, frizz-free and fragrant. I didn’t even have to use my heated tongs to tweak it into shape – hallelujah!” – Sarah Reeve 82
We put the latest hair-styling products to the test
Fudge Professional Salt Spray £11.50, www.beautybay.com “There’s nothing better than achieving natural beach waves from the salt, sun and wind from a day spent at the seaside. However, since we can’t just pop to the ocean every day to achieve this desired look, Fudge Professional Salt Spray does the same job. My hair is on the fine side, and I love adding texture and waves to add volume and movement. The lightweight texture offered me medium hold, without turning crunchy and drying out my locks. It’s so easy to use, simply spray onto towel-dried hair, give a slight scrunch with your hands and leave to air dry. My top tip would be to plait your hair after use to create more defined waves.” – Olivia Gibson

THE CROWN AND THE David Emanuel shares his top tips to help you say “yes” to the dress
n w o g F
ashion designer and broadcaster David Emanuel is a much-loved household name, regarded as the don of bridal fashion since creating that iconic wedding dress for Lady Diana Spencer 40 years ago. CWM’s Kelly Andrews caught up with him at the launch of Bromley Brides’ new Wonder Room to find out about his plans for celebrating this career milestone.
Dave Benett for Getty Images
What advice would you give to a bride-to-be setting foot inside a bridal boutique for the very first time? Try to keep an open mind and be objective. Think about what you’ve got at home. You might have an evening dress and you love the shape. So, why don’t you think about that same shape for your wedding dress? A lot of brides get completely wound up, particularly the ones who’ve over-shopped. When they tell me they’ve tried on 200 dresses, there’s clearly something wrong there. Equally, they might come in with a set idea – “I want skin tight, I want sexy.” It’s interesting, as it changes. I’ll say to them, “Put it on and look in the mirror. On your wedding day, are you going to be comfortable?” Then of course, you’ve got to take the time of year into account, where it’s happening, where the party’s going to be and all of that.
94
What do you need to consider before you start shopping? It’s all to do with the personality and character of the bride. If she’s a showy girl, that’s lovely, put her in a showy frock, but if she’s quiet, put her in something more modest. I go back mostly to Say Yes To The Dress, when the first question I ask is: “Do you have a budget?” She might say £3,000 and we can stretch to various styles with that. Then she’ll say, “I want more,” at which point the mother pipes up saying she’ll throw in another thousand. If they’d just said that in the beginning it would have been an
FASHION INTERVIEW easier task. I tell you, that show kept me on my toes!
It doesn’t have to be fantasy; you need simplicity for longevity.
What are the common pitfalls that brides should avoid when dress shopping? Invariably, brides will go on the internet and they’ll see these very glamourous models wearing these fabulous dresses, and they’ll rip pages out of magazines, but are they being realistic? Look in the mirror and be honest with yourself, try to be objective. I know it’s difficult, but look at yourself and think: what do I really want? You’ll go through various stages; you’re not going to get the first dress. I’ll suggest something, and the bride might say she couldn’t possibly, but I’ll insist she slip into it. Once she realises how great she looks, we go down a different path. So, keep an open mind, and let the girls at the boutique do their job, which is to make you look wonderful. You’ve got to trust them. Don’t forget: they’ve dressed hundreds of brides.
Do you think the Covid-19 pandemic has had an effect on the way brides think? I think, if anything, it’s got to completely focus the brides, because they’re under pressure. They might have booked, then have to unbook, and they’ve got to replan. It’s changing by the day – guest numbers are limited, but you know what? That’s not a bad thing actually. Let’s think about it: you don’t have to worry about auntie Flossie and uncle Albert who you only see once every two years! All that pressure is gone. You really should want just the people who love you to be there. Then, if you want to have a bigger party next year, or whenever, the heat is taken off. It should be a joyous time, enjoy it.
Based on your experience on Say Yes To The Dress UK, what’s your take on the ever expanding bridal entourage? Too much! You might have six people, with six points of view, six different tastes. No, we’re concerned with the bride. Sometimes, even the bride’s mum can’t get it, so you’ve got to rely on the very good stylists at your boutique, who are there to help you.

What are your tips for creating the ultimate timeless look? You want to keep it relatively simple, but dramatic. You see, an iconic wedding gown has to have something about it – Diana’s was a 25ft train. Well, it needed drama, this was St Pauls, it was enormous, you couldn’t do a simple, quiet little dress. Or like Meghan’s gown – the story on that dress was the embroidered flowers from the Commonwealth. Big veil, but that was her message, and that was a simple dress.
Tell us about your involvement with Bromley Brides. When I found out (owner) Becky Griggs had been planning to expand and was still going ahead, I thought that was really courageous. I was blown away by the store the first time I came here, it looks great. I like people who take risks, good for her! The Wonder Room is camp and mad, great for a party. Get the dress, then celebrate it! It’s the 40th anniversary of Princess Diana’s iconic wedding dress next year. Do you have any plans to mark the occasion? I never thought I’d be sitting here talking about 40 years! I don’t know where the time’s gone, it’s like a dream. A lot has happened in my life, and this is a very exciting time. We’ve been bombarded by people wanting to do interviews and documentaries, so we’ve got to sit down, let the dust settle and go through everything. When I travel the world, designing Diana’s wardrobe is my calling card – everyone knows who I am because of it. Everywhere I go, people talk very highly of her, and it’s exciting that people still want to do something for her. What was it like to work with Princess Diana? She was the sweetest girl, as divine as you saw
her, no different. It wasn’t all done for the TV and press, she really was lovely. One time we were doing a fitting at Buckingham Palace and we didn’t have our van with us that day, so she asked us how we were getting back. We were planning to call a black cab, but she insisted on taking us herself. She had this little Ford, so we climbed in - Diana driving, me in the front and Elizabeth in the back. It was hysterical, when we stopped at traffic lights, people were aghast. There she was, giggling, it was so much fun. That’s what I remember about her, the fun. I was very fortunate, very honoured and lucky to design several foreign tours for her, and there were a lot of clothes to be done. She’d ring on a Monday and say, “Hi, it’s me.” She’d go on to say that she’d got something special and had nothing to wear, so I quickly had to think. We’d turn up the next day with sketches and some fabrics, and by Friday it was all wrapped and sent for her to wear that evening. We had to turn it around fast, and do you know, without fail she’d always say, “Thank you so much, I know you worked so hard.” It was touching. If you’re lucky along this road, you’ll meet one or two special people and she was one of them. You’ve dressed plenty of famous bodies over the years, who was your most memorable? I was in Paris, as Elizabeth Taylor couldn’t come to London for a fitting. She was at the George V Hotel in a huge suite, and I put her in a chocolate brown Chantilly lace cocktail dress. She looked fabulous and I didn’t have to put one pin in it. She threw open the double doors, and burst through them crying, “Franco, Franco, what do you think?” There he was, Franco Zeffirelli, the film director! All I could think was: “OK David, keep calm.” He loved the dress, but, she said, there was just one little problem. She would be wearing it to the White House and might have to dance with the President, but wasn’t sure she could. With that I grabbed her and spun her around the whole suite. “I think I can dance in this dress,” she said when we stopped waltzing. Listen, when those eyes fixed on you it was all over. She was special, she was real. It’s magic, private moments like that, which make your career, they’re precious. As I’m saying it, I could be back there, it seems like yesterday. Yet, I can’t believe… 40 years!

DRESSED TO IMPRESS Q – I’m looking for a stylish suit to wear at my upcoming wedding. I’d love something that ties in with our winter theme without being over the top. Do you have any suggestions? One of the most critical questions we ask grooms-to-be is, what do you plan to do with the suit after the big day? Often they are planning to wear it again to other weddings, so it’s worth factoring this into your fabric choices. A midweight around 12oz will do you for most months of the year. The key to using it in the winter is texture. Hopsack and glencheck are my personal favourites and look awesome. If this isn’t crucial, then you can afford to be heavier on the cloth weight, which will drape even better too! For a relaxed, barn style wedding mid-weight tweeds are a great option. The material makes up wonderfully, has bucket loads of texture and depth and photographs like a dream. Look for herringbone and twill. If you’re having a formal affair, then a luxurious flannel is your friend. The slightly mottled texture gives a warm, deep feel, whilst screaming sartorial elegance. Most tweeds and flannel colours mirror the colder seasons too. Burnt orange, mocha brown and forest green alongside the ever classic navy and mid greys. Lastly, note that heavier cloth works well with a softer made suit. Think less padding and more Italian style. Let the quality of the cloth do the work, and the softness of the suit do the comfort. COLOUR POP Q – I want to wear a colourful wedding dress. What should I look for? Here at TDR-Bridal Birmingham, we love a splash of colour! Not only is it a great way of expressing your personality, but it can also pull together your theme and if done right make a beautiful aesthetic for your guests that they’ll remember for years to come. Many dresses come with colour options, so if you find a design you love, check if there’s a way of incorporating your chosen hue into the design. Always ask your boutique for their opinion and what the options are before you buy, as there may be a way to add some amazing beadwork or three-dimensional flowers, which are on trend right now. It may be something as simple as a bow or belt, there are lots of different ideas depending on the design you choose. It’s always important to think about how to incorporate the colour into other parts of your wedding or décor so that you get a really cohesive theme. Another thing to consider is what flowers you want. Do they come in the hue you’re looking for and do they complement your gown? All too often blooms can be overlooked until the last minute, and if it’s not an exact shade your chosen, then it may end up looking a little mismatched. Fundamentally introducing colour is fab, just do your homework first and ensure you plan everything down to the last detail, taking as much advice from the experts around you as possible. Q&A
Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best this winter SPARKLE AND SHINE Q – How can we incorporate Christmas hues into my bridesmaids’ hair and make-up? I love a Christmas wedding, especially if the weather is on your side. The most important thing is to take care of your hair before your wedding. This is especially important in the colder months as the winter air can make it look dry and a little dull. I always offer my clients a deep conditioning treatment and shine to make the locks look glossy and healthy. With the potential for rain, snow or sleet – or even the wind messing up your bridesmaids’ hair, I always recommend an up do. This will stay in place and hold any decorative items regardless of the weather. Fresh flowers can be the perfect romantic finish to your girls’ hairstyles, but you’ll have to make sure the blooms you have chosen can withstand the colder temperatures. Snowdrops are a good choice or hardy greens such as ivy and ferns. Add a sparkly tiara or decorative accessory to create a festive look. A simple pop of colour such as plum or red lip will offset paler skin beautifully and look great against their dresses. Use a simple black liquid liner on the eyes that will pair beautifully with the bold lip. Don’t forget to use waterproof products to avoid any smudges! If you’re like me and not a lip girl and would rather go for statement eyes, try a smoky eye with added glitter and sparkle. You could also add a shimmer of gold into the crease or corner of the eye. Laura Timms Hair and make-up artist www.lauratimms.co.uk
SEARCHING FOR THE ONE Q – I’d like to wear a stylish dress that will also keep me warm at our winter wedding. What I should look for? Try and find something with a high neck and/or sleeves. We have a fabulous dress by Kenneth Winston called 1879, which has a detachable train so you can create two looks in one. The gown is a champagne colour and is adorned with embroidered cotton lace. It’s the perfect dress for a winter wedding and will definitely make an impact on your guests. Julie Reilly Wedding dress expert www.perfectionsbridalstudio.com
