Step ito spring F

or me, spring is a wonderful time of year. I love seeing nature come alive again, and being able to go outside without it being dark is something I’ve truly missed. Although I adore Christmas (who doesn’t?) I’m not a fan of the winter months and am so glad we can finally say hello to spring! With a new season comes lots of wonderful real weddings, and I can’t wait to hear from those of you who are set to tie the knot in the next few months. As many of you know, my wedding is in July 2022, so we’re finally in the home stretch and counting down the days. We opted for a summer wedding, partly due to my disdain for the cold weather, but also because when we got engaged in 2020 we were in the middle of one of the many lockdowns and were unsure if we’d be able to get married anytime soon. We booked our venue for 18 months later, and here we are about to walk down the aisle and say ‘I do’. For those of you who are newly engaged, believe me when I tell you that your day will arrive in the blink of an eye! My number one piece of advice is to take your time and enjoy the planning process. In this issue, we showcase some of the best entertainers, answer your hot topic questions and reveal the latest news from around the West Midlands. Remember, if you’ve recently celebrated your day or have been involved with a styled shoot, you can submit it at www.yourwestmidlands.wedding/get-involved-real-wedding or email me at melissa.barker@kdeventsandpublishing.com

BOOGIE TO THE MUSIC Dayton Music UK is staring as the male lead in the National Theatre Tour, Endless Love. Featuring the nostalgic songs of Lionel Richie and Diana Ross, the tour is travelling around the UK, so there’s a chance to see it wherever you’re based. Dayton was also named as a finalist for Best Regional Best Musical Act at The Wedding Industry Awards. Dayton first started in 2013 when he was 32. “My wife and I become emotionally invested in each couple’s special day. Being chosen is such an honour, one we never take for granted. Throughout the process, we create great relationships with the couples, so they feel like they are speaking to a trusted friend, rather than a service provider. I’m often rebooked to sing and DJ at their future events, christenings, birthdays, anniversaries. That’s such a magical feeling!” Head over to www.daytongrey.co.uk for more information. 9

We want our customers to be able to choose and wear a ring that meets their expectations and reflects their personalities. Barnutopia, in the Shropshire countryside, opened as a glamping site with three Mongolian yurts in 2015. Two years later, the owners expanded as a wedding and events venue and have continued to add to the space to create a charming setting to say ‘I do’. Approaching through the main gates, guests will be greeted by a long red brick stable block that dates back to 1892. The event barn opens directly onto the yurt field with spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. All parts of the site are easily accessible, including the nine luxury glamping units, two fully-equipped kitchens and bathroom blocks with unlimited hot water. All units are fully furnished with beds, power, heating and free Wi-Fi.

Creating Magic

& Making Memories

Woodland romance REAL WEDDINGS

Surrounded by friends and family, Beth and Scott tied the knot at Crumplebury in Worcester Images courtesy of Duncan Cox Photography

B

eth and Scott met while on a photography course. “Scott was learning about portrait photography, and I was the subject,” says Beth. “We kept in touch as acquaintances over several years before developing a stronger friendship which blossomed into a relationship. We bonded over our slightly warped sense of humour and love of all things vintage. Aside from his good looks, I love Scott for his intelligence and how when he is talking about something he is passionate about, it’s infectious, and you can’t help but be excited with him. He is there for me and supports me in everything I do. He gives me the confidence to break out of my comfort zone and travel to new places.” Scott tell us about the proposal: “I had lots of ideas of how to propose to Beth, but so many were either predictable or too obvious. It takes a lot to catch Beth by surprise and so it had to be something completely random. I decided to make a cake and use icing around the cake to ask the question (along with the ring). Typically, Beth did not make it easy! All my planning on the day was thwarted by Beth having a nightmare day at work which meant I had to go and pick her up. Thankfully, I just had enough time to finish the baking and the all-important decoration. Upon getting home, Beth went upstairs to get changed and, on her return, found me standing in our kitchen with a cake which I turned to reveal the words “will you marry me?” before getting down on one knee with the ring. Needless to say, the proposal took Beth completely by surprise and turned a bad day into an incredible one. Just in case the cake and the ring were not quite enough to seal the deal, I had also booked a table at a restaurant we both wanted to try and presented her with another box; this one containing a new dress and shoes for her to wear that night.” Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day... 27

We were both very clear that we wanted our ceremony to be in a woodland in autumn. We wanted a venue that had everything in one place with a rustic nod that was still stylish and had the wow factor. Crumplebury had all of this and more. We went to see Crumplebury while it was still being built following a week of torrential rain. While it was close to opening, it was still very much a building site, and we had great fun wading through mud to get inside. Regardless, we could see how magnificent it would be on completion. With its huge windows letting in all the light and incredible views of the surrounding countryside, we knew we had found our venue. The owners, Joe and Keeley, were so enthusiastic and showed us the options in the woodland where the ceremony could be held. There was no doubt in either of our minds that this was where our ceremony had to take place. The favours were seed bombs and jams and chutneys made from fruit and vegetables in our garden.

Scott and I wanted the day to feel relaxed and for the flowers to reflect this. My bouquet from Bloomery was unstructured and wild, featuring deep autumnal tones and foliage, and included flowers suitable for drying so that they could be kept and displayed long after the day.

Our big-day bake from Cakes By Karen continued our autumnal theme and was decorated with seasonal fruits. It was sat atop an aeroplane door which Scott had salvaged. Being a massive aviation fan, he had to find a way to get planes in there somehow! For the wedding breakfast, we wanted one long banquetingstyle table to create a laid back feel. The table decorations were loosely down the centre of the table with moss, leaves, ferns, milk bottle vases, owl feathers and the place settings, made by us, were green with an oak leaf cut out.

The focal point of the ceremony space was an impressive grand piano. This was dressed with leaves, candles, crystals, milk bottles (to give nod to Scott’s family heritage) and macramé from Ohh, Knots. There were lanterns dotted around the woodland floor, and crystals hung throughout the branches. 28

Scott wore a Marc Darcy three-piece tweed suit with a pair of classic Jefferey West boots from Country Master. Rather than settling for a traditional buttonhole, Scott’s suit was adorned with a full pocket meadow to continue the wedding’s colour scheme and theme. One of the groomsmen has a penchant for kilts, and it was agreed that he could swap the trousers for his kilt after the ceremony. He duly surprised us by revealing that he had had a kilt custom made to match the fabric of the bridesmaids’ dresses!

REAL WEDDINGS

People always assumed that I would have a very colourful, nontraditional dress, but it was important to me that whatever dress I wore did not steal the show in the wrong way. The dress I wore was Adélaïde by Élysée, which I purchased at Mimi Toko. It was the perfect balance of traditional and vintage Hollywood glamour. I accessorised with antique and new marcasite jewellery with a long lace-trimmed veil.

Music is very important to us, especially live music, so we hired an acoustic guitarist and a brass band to entertain our guests. Cotswold Wedding Guitarist – Matt Bee played on our return to the main building after the ceremony and had a ‘jukebox guitar’ option so that guests could choose a song from his guitar case and put it on a board to create a playlist.

The bridesmaids wore off-the-shoulder swing dresses by British Retro. The colours looked great with the blue in the groomsmen’s suits and the green of the woodland surrounding us. Their accessories were small crystal necklaces that were part of my gift to them, small floral hairpins that I made and converse-style wellies. Scott loves New Orleansstyle brass bands, and Brass Junkies played a great mix of classic music interspersed with modern hits for our guests to dance to.

Our day was incredible and completely surpassed our wildest imaginations. It was relaxed, casual, intimate and full of love. We were able to enjoy every moment with our friends and family. 29

One thing we both remember from the day is how much we laughed. Especially as I attempted to walk down the aisle! While I had remembered to test out my heels on the terrain the day before, I hadn’t given due consideration to the length of my dress and veil. I had to be rescued three times by a swift bridesmaid and my helpful father when I got stuck to trees and ended up dragging a very large branch several yards in my determination to make it to the end of the aisle before the music ended. Our version of the handfasting asked, those who wished, to come up and add to our cords while also providing a word of blessing. It was wonderful to have this level of inclusion and also feel that the values of those dearest to us were being bound into our new lives as man and wife. Sacred Honouring Handfastings completed the ceremony with a toast of mead and a hearty huzzah!

Scott had spent a lot of time working on his speech but somehow managed to misplace it while getting ready, so he had to wing it on the day. As much as he was panicking, he still managed to thank everyone, including our amazing suppliers and bring tears to my eyes with his beautiful words.

We ended our day as we had planned; sat around a fire, chatting with the ones we love, hot chocolate in hand and married.

race and Ben met at a birthday party. “I’d just returned from Las Vegas, and Ben was travelling there in a few months, so we were chatting about things to do and places to go for the majority of the barbecue,” says Grace. “After the party, I added Ben on Facebook. After several attempts and last-minute cancellations, we finally went on our first date 18 months later. The thing that attracted me to Ben was his sense of humour. I left the date with my jaw aching from how much I’d smiled and laughed the entire evening.” For Grace, the proposal was a complete surprise. “He popped the question three weeks into lockdown in April 2020,” shares the bride. “Every year, my family have a big Easter egg hunt, and the more obscure the hiding place, the better. I was sad that we weren’t able to get together, so Ben suggested we do our own hunt, get dressed up and make the most of the day. After finding my Easter egg, I realised it was already open, and there was a small letter inside the egg telling me to turn around. Behind me, Ben was down on one knee in our garden. To make it even more special, he had FaceTimed my parents so they were able to be there (virtually), and he recorded the whole thing from our bedroom window, so we can look back on it forever.”

SETTING THE SCENE “I always knew I wanted to get married at St Mary’s Church in Kingswinford as it’s just around the corner from my parent’s home and has special meaning to me,” explains Grace. “We didn’t want our guests to have to travel far from the ceremony to the reception, so when we found Brockencote Hall Hotel and saw they had accommodation, we knew it was a winner. As soon as we were able to visit in person, we fell in love. The sweeping drive, grounds and stunning exterior were an absolute dream and fitted in with everything we envisaged for our day.” The couple gave their guests scratch cards as favours that doubled as place names. “We placed them in small black envelopes and wrote each person’s name in silver calligraphy with a penny attached,” adds the bride. “My dad loves scratch cards, and every Christmas, he would use them as place settings, so it felt like a fun nod to a family tradition. Plus, if someone won big, the bar tab was on them!” “Our table plan was a large white acyclic sheet with the same font that we used on our invitations,” recalls Grace. “For our centrepieces, we continued the monochrome theme with black candlesticks with extra-long tapered candles to give the table some height. We paired these with floating candle glasses and three bud vases with a selection of white flowers in.” Grace and Ben chose to have white and green flowers from The Secret Garden Weddings. “Ben is from Leeds, so I knew I wanted lots of white roses to tie in with his hometown,” reveals the bride. “We had the most stunning top table arrangement and chose climbers for outside the church door with lots of greenery, which made a fantastic entrance. The florist also did a beautiful gypsophila wreath for my mum’s front door, which lasted six weeks after the wedding.” “Our cake was a last-minute purchase as we had always said we weren’t too concerned about having one, but I’m so glad we did,” says Grace. “We chose a three-tier design made up of buttercream and raspberry jam. It was covered in white icing, but the bottom tier had individually piped flowers to give it some texture.” The lovebirds hired transport from Class Act Wedding Cars. “I chose to walk from my parent’s house to the church, and our driver crawled alongside on the other side of the road,” shares the bride. “When we did eventually use the white Mercedes to transport us to Brockencote Hall Hotel, the service was top notch. We had a glass of champagne and got to enjoy half an hour alone.” “Behind our top table, we had the most fantastic moongate, which was complete with a neon sign,” explains Grace. “As we sat in front of the windows and the sun started to set, this proved a great backdrop to our meal and made the perfect photo opportunity later on in the night.” 33

REAL WEDDINGS

Brockencote Hall Hotel provided the catering. “With Ben being from Yorkshire, it was always going to be roast, and he was very specific that it needed to include Yorkshire puddings,” laughs the bride. “For our starter, we wanted to go for something light that would suit the time of year, and the chef put together a melted Camembert parcel with salad and salsa with fried walnuts on top, which was absolute perfection. The chef created a chocolate mousse for dessert. In the evening, we had bacon sandwiches and potato wedges as well as a dessert bar of our favourite things – Krispy Kreme doughnuts, chocolate teacakes, white and black chocolate cupcakes and blondies from our favourite bakery.”

DRESSED TO IMPRESS “I wore an Essense of Australia dress called D2771 from Wedding Belles of Four Oaks,” recalls Grace. “It was the complete opposite of everything I thought I wanted. I envisaged a simple satin ballgown with a dramatic back but never got the wow feeling from any of them. When I finally tried this dress on, I didn’t want to take it off and was distracted for the rest of the appointment, just thinking back to that dress! I just knew that’s what I wanted to get married in. I styled it with a simple fingertip veil, as the dress is so detailed and the train is so long I didn’t want to take away from it. I had Jimmy Choo shoes, which felt bridal enough, but I knew I can wear them again and again. For jewellery, my parents bought me three cluster diamond earrings to wear, and Ben gifted me an encased diamond Tiffany & Co necklace to match.” Ben decided to wear a tux from Peter Posh Formal Suit Hire. “When I saw him in the tux, my jaw dropped at how handsome he looked,” adds the bride. “He was keen to not stand out too much in comparison to the groomsmen, so we made subtle tweaks such as him having black buttons on his shirt and a different buttonhole.” “The bridesmaids wore dresses from ASOS,” Grace reveals. “The hunt for theirs took longer than my dress search! It was difficult as for most of the year restrictions were still in place, so we couldn’t get together. I hadn’t seen the bridesmaid dresses on any of the girls until the wedding! I knew I wanted something simple but a little sexy since my dress was so fitted. They were a pale green leaning towards grey colour with a cowl neck, which flattered the girls, and had a large slit up the front.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE “We thought after the last 18 months everyone would just enjoy seeing

each other and chatting, so before the meal, we just allowed everyone to enjoy each other’s company,” says the bride. “After the meal, we had a DJ from Chamberlain Events and then as a surprise to everyone, we had an ABBA tribute band called Strictly ABBA. The music went quiet, and my bridesmaids were saying ‘what’s going on?’ Then suddenly out they came. It was fantastic and such a great surprise for everyone!”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS “We felt so in love,” shares Grace. “It sounds like a cliché, but to be marrying each other surrounded by all of our family and friends was a surreal, but amazing feeling. We just felt so much love in the room. Aside from marrying Ben, the best moment for me was getting to walk from my parent’s house round to the church. All of their neighbours, who I’ve grown up around, came to wave me off. To walk along the road and have cars beeping was such a funny experience. It also allowed for my dad and I to enjoy the experience rather than being overly emotional. For Ben, he loved every moment, but a huge standout was at the very end of the night where we sat with all our best friends in the bar, just chatting and laughing.” “Whilst we all sat at the end of the wedding in the bar, two of our friends got an Uber round trip to McDonald’s and turned back up with loads of chicken nuggets meals,” explains the bride. “It was such a funny end to the night and just perfect for us!” “Our wedding stylist, Lesley at White Fern Weddings, was absolutely unreal, she was there for every query, question and worry,” Grace adds. “I was so flippant with what I wanted, and she managed to create something magical. Staci at Brockencote Hall Hotel was also fantastic, and nothing was too much trouble for her. I genuinely miss chatting to her! A shout out must go to the best man for his speech as well, Ben had been best man for him a few months prior, and they both did each other proud with lovely, heartfelt speeches.”

HONEYMOON “We’ve always wanted to go to New Zealand on our honeymoon, but obviously this wasn’t possible with travel restrictions,” recalls the bride. “Around a week before the wedding, we booked a last-minute trip to Paphos, Cyprus. It felt so lovely to just be together and relax, after not only the wedding but the last 18 months. We only had four days there, but that was more than enough and made our love bubble last longer.” 35

Vanessa and Stu had a bright and bold celebration at The Old Library in Birmingham Images courtesy of Louise Holgate Photography

anessa and Stu dated when they were teenagers but ended up going their separate ways. “We met again on Tinder after both becoming single around the same time,” says Vanessa. “We added each other on Facebook and started chatting. We met up to take my dog for a walk in the park and we’ve been together ever since.” “We didn’t get engaged,” shares the bride. “Having both been married before, neither of us wanted a big engagement, but we had talked about getting married, so when we decided it was time, we booked a celebrant and a photographer. We didn’t tell anyone as we wanted it to be just the two of us. We eloped to Glen Coe in Scotland and got married outdoors in September 2020. Stu bought me a ring from an antique shop in Edinburgh, which I’d seen and loved. He nipped back to get it, then gave it to me six months later on my birthday. It wasn’t intended to be an engagement ring, but I’ve worn it on my left hand since getting married. We decided to have a party with our friends and family in Birmingham to celebrate.” Here she shares some of her favourite moments from their big day... 39

We wanted something bright and spacious that you could add plenty of colour to, and The Old Library was perfect.

The cake was made by my friend. We asked her to create something colourful, and she absolutely delivered with a stunning bright pink and orange cake with gold leaf. She added a tiny little dog wearing a flower crown and orange feathers to represent our dog, Merry. She also made a selection of super gooey delicious brownies for our guests.

g up different coloured paper Sharelle, our events planner, spent hours puttin ing and were really budgetlanterns with streamers. They looked amaz Amazed as a focal point since friendly. We had a neon sign from Vowed and the room was so big. 40

For centrepieces, we bought some small potted succulents and had photos from our wedding dotted around. Sharelle from Appl e Tree Weddings & Events worked her socks off decorating the venue, it was beyon d what I imagined, and I can’t believe what she achieved in a short space of time.

Our flowers were stunning. Jo at The Solihull Florist created a spectacular bouquet with thistles to tie in with our Scottish wedding and a bright orange celosia, a flower I’d never seen before, but it added so much depth to the arrangement.

The Wandering Pizza Co provided the catering. We wanted our guests to have something but nothing too formal. A pizza van seemed like a good option as not many people dislike pizza! They had vegan and gluten-free options too, which was a plus.

I am a professional magician and member of The Magic Circle, based in West Midlands and perform regularly at weddings both large and small across the UK. I offer a wide range of wedding packages including;

TABLE MAGIC IN BETWEEN COURSES | MINGLING DURING RECEPTION | MINGLING DURING PHOTOGRAPHS | CLOSE-UP/MINGLING BEFORE AND AFTER THE SPEECHES BESPOKE PACKAGES TO SUIT INDIVIDUAL REQUIREMENTS

Entertaining at weddings is my favourite part of the job! I perform in many different areas, both on stage and with close up, but there is something so special about being part of a wedding day. I consider it such a privilege to be able to add value to what is already such a joyful event and to be able to establish connections through the medium of magic, between strangers who share a love of the happy couple but who may not be known to each other until that day.

Meet Dayton Grey from Dayton Music UK 07946 336 061 | www.daytongrey.co.uk

Dayton Grey UK first started in 2013, when I was 32. I initially performed as part of a duo named Domino with my close friend Helen Hale. I was surprised to find myself so at home on stage, and I soon gained confidence. In 2014, I performed my first wedding as a soloist. The feeling was like no other! Eager to explore my place in the industry, I took part in several wedding fairs. Things took off quickly, and all subsequent bookings came from recommendations, guests from previous weddings, social media, or TV shows. Then the pandemic hit. The impact on our amazing industry was devastating. It didn’t just affect suppliers financially. Weddings planned by couples for years were suddenly, and heartbreakingly, cancelled and rescheduled only to be cancelled again. My wife and I spent countless hours consoling devastated couples, rearranging their original suppliers and being a soundboard during difficult times. As a supplier, my wife and I become emotionally invested in each couple’s special day. Being chosen is such an honour, one we never take for granted. Throughout the process, we create great relationships with the couples, so they feel like they are speaking to a trusted friend, rather than a service provider. I’m often rebooked to sing and DJ at their future christenings, birthdays and anniversaries. In 2021, I was awarded Wedding Musical Act of the Year in the West Midlands by The Wedding Industry Awards. Being my first time nominated, winning was a huge surprise! I have just received the same award for a second consecutive year. In addition to performing covers, I write and record original music. My debut single raised over £4000 for Fibromyalgia Action UK, and two recent collaborations with writer/producer Alex Lloyd went straight to number one in the Amazon Music charts. During the first lockdown, I was approached to be the male lead of a new national theatre show, Endless Love. Our opening show in February at The Lighthouse Theatre, Kettering, was incredible. Phenomenal vocalist, Leanne Sandy performs Diana Ross’ songs while I present Lionel Richie’s hits. Throughout my career, I’ve been blessed to share the stage on several occasions with Ray Lewis, former lead singer of The Drifters, invited to be an industry expert judge on BBC1’s All Together Now, and performed as a mystery singer on BBC1’s I Can See Your Voice. I recently appeared on ITV’s new primetime show, Starstruck. I can provide the perfect music for your ceremony, ambience for your pre-drinks and/or wedding breakfast and fun-filled evening reception! Additionally, I offer a DJ service to ensure your entertainment flows flawlessly, so, you can be assured that you are in safe hands! 46

MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT

Meet harpist Helen Barley 01384 877 572 | www.helenbarley.co.uk

I’m a harpist based in Kinver specialising in weddings and am passionate about helping couples have the best day possible. I’m a graduate of the Royal Manchester College of Music, and I later did my post-graduate studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. My work with a group of autistic children led me to buy a small harp as an experiment. Both the children and I completely fell in love with the instrument, and so a period of intensive training followed, including lessons from some of the country’s top harpists. I now enjoy singing at weddings and other functions. I sing and play covers in many different genres of music, offering a wide range of styles. I also teach the harp and am the director of the Kinver Harp Ensemble. My wide variety of harps are available for all situations, and amplification can be provided if required. I give my full commitment to providing the perfect music for the ceremony, drinks reception or wedding breakfast. To that end, I offer a free consultation for couples to see and hear the harps and discuss their options. My charges depend on the date, location and which part of the wedding need my services. My minimum cost is £290 for any part of the wedding. For two parts, such as the ceremony and drinks reception, I don’t charge by the hour as I’ve found weddings rarely run on time, so I prefer to charge for the event and then it doesn’t matter if everything runs a bit late. I work alone and only play one wedding a day, so it’s essential to book as soon as you have secured your date and venue to avoid disappointment. My favourite part of playing at weddings is contributing to a couple’s happiness. I feel privileged to be part of such an important occasion, and I love every moment of it. 49

My passion is makeup and to make every Bride look and feel amazing, after all a Wedding Day is one of the most important days of your life and it will probably be captured in hundreds of photos. I use gorgeous skincare products and luxury makeup brands and professionally apply to ensure each of my brides is glowing, confident and ready for her special day. Bridal trials can be held at home or at my new studio in Halesowen and with a variety of Wedding Packages and bespoke ideas I’m sure I have an option for you.

INDUSTRIAL

REGIONAL SHOOT

CHIC Be inspired by this modern shoot at Iron House Images courtesy of Story Cabin Wedding Films

M

ichelle and Amy from The Wedding Bubble tell us more about how this set of images came to life: “Iron House is based in the heart of Birmingham in the Hockley district of the city. Home to the famous Jewellery Quarter, the Iron House is surrounded by original Victorian architecture, which can be seen at the venue’s entrance and follows through to the bare brick walls and ironframed windows on the inside. Inspired by our love of the city and its industrial qualities, we wanted to show the raw beauty it can create as an alternative backdrop to a wedding. Our concept called for wild, unstructured florals and candles as a contrast against the harshness of the space, and we had the perfect florist and stylist in mind to bring this to life in Little Garden Flowers and

Junie Poonie. “We were keen to use a real couple for this shoot rather than models, and after being contacted by Sarah and David, we knew they were the perfect pair! They had, unfortunately, had to cancel their 2021 wedding due to COVID-19 and were super excited to be involved and this came across in the images and video captured by Story Cabin Wedding Films and RM Wedding Films. We used gorgeous outfits for both the bride and groom from TDR Bridal Birmingham and hair and make-up by Sarah Russell. From Kimmies Kitchen treated us to an incredible two-tier cake for the shoot, which as well as photographing beautifully, was the most delicious treat for the team to enjoy whilst wrapping up at the end of the day!” 51

EXPERT ADVICE

HOT TOPIC:

wedding worries Our experts solve your problems

REST AND RELAXATION

My anxiety has been bad recently and my bridesmaids want to organise a spa trip to help me relax. I’m nervous as I’ve never visited one before, do you have any tips? Whether it’s your first time in the spa or your 100th, we can all struggle to switch off our minds and get out of our heads from time to time. Here are my top tips on how to stay grounded and confident in the moment: Celebrate your body – If body confidence is your weak point, instead of judging yourself for the negative thoughts you have, pivot your mind to recognising the role that your body plays in your overall wellbeing. As you look at yourself, appreciate every part of you (even the bits you sometimes don’t love) and celebrate all that it does for you. It’s important to remind yourself that you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do. If, when at the spa, you prefer to wear a more covered swimming costume over a bikini, then do! Whatever you choose, wear it with confidence for your beautiful body. Finding a treatment that works for you – Spas are more accommodating than ever before, with each offering menus that can often be tailored to your needs. If you’re nervous, perhaps build some

initial confidence with a facial treatment, and on your next trip, you might surprise yourself and want to book in for a whole-body massage! Switching off during a treatment – One of my favourite ways to switch off is by reciting a mantra and sticking to it. If you’re still struggling to switch off, move your focus to the sounds around you. Listen to what you can hear, maybe it’s the birds chirping outside or the calming music. Ensure you’re well-rested – When we’re tired, the mind will usually work overtime, and it’s harder to calm our thoughts down. So, the night before coming to the spa, it’s important to get a good night’s sleep. Try switching off your phone before you get into bed, and instead have a relaxing bath or read your favourite book. If you wake up and still aren’t feeling as well-rested as you’d like, try doing a quick meditation. Plan your trip with people who empower you – While going to the spa alone can be just what you need, often spending the day with the people who empower can allow you to enjoy it that bit more. This quality time with someone else can boost both of your confidence and bring you to a state of mutual relaxation. Penny Weston www.moddershalloaks.com

DELECTABLE DELIGHTS Most of our guests have dietary requirements. How can we cater for everyone? A grazing table is a great way to cater for everyone as it can be split into different sections to cater for various dietary requirements. Most grazing tables we create at Cranberry & Thyme have vegan, gluten-free, vegetarian and meat sections all on one table, with fresh fruit and raw vegetables, olives and dips to accommodate all needs without people feeling left out or having to bring their own food. For those with specific allergies, ask your supplier to create a separate platter just for them. Libbi Coldicott www.cranberryandthyme.com 55

REGAL ELEGANCE How can we incorporate our Bridgerton theme into our styling? The recent Bridgerton trend has seen a rise in the subtle mix of modern and vintage. To give homage to Bridgerton in your décor and styling, my recommendation is to go big. A stunning concept would be large arrangments of pastel coloured flowers for the centre of each table, with candlesticks decorated with various coloured candles. Large candelabras or birdcages decorated in florals would also suit this style. A beautiful mix of coloured vintage crockery and cutlery will add to the look. Keep the table cloths simple in white, ivory cotton or even lace. Don’t be afraid to mix colours whilst adding hints of elegance. Would Lady Banbury have it any other way? Naomi Jade Francis www.facebook.com/vintagevenuestyling

LOVE LETTERS What are the dos and don’ts of wedding stationery? Before you start ordering stationery, consider what themes and colour schemes you want at your wedding. From then, you can begin collecting invitation samples to see what you like best. Not only does this mean that you can see the invitations in real life and check out their quality, but you can also try a few different stationers and see what their service is like. I recommend choosing your invites before the rest of your stationery and then matching them accordingly, as you don’t want to change your mind on your design halfway through your stationery journey. Save the dates let everyone know the date of your wedding, and can include a few key details. These are some of the most important pieces of stationery to have as they make wedding planning easier, as well as give guests a sneak peek of your day. If you’re having a destination wedding or a wedding in a busy holiday period, you may want to send your save the dates up to a year in advance, allowing guests to book time off work, book hotels and flights, and save money for your big day. Your invitations are your most important and anticipated pieces of wedding stationery, so make sure you send them with lots of time to spare. Take into consideration the time it will take for your stationers to create and deliver your invites, as well as how long it will take for you to choose, personalise, and send them to guests. Some wedding invitations can be bought as bundles, including guest information and RSVP cards. This makes ordering your stationery super easy with the cards all sharing the same design. Make sure you include RSVP cards and guest information cards in your invitations. This makes managing your guest list so much easier and will help you plan the next stages of your wedding, such as meals and seating plans. Specifying an RSVP date is essential to getting your replies back and will prevent you from paying for unnecessary things down the line. Of course, all the extras can be ordered at any time throughout your wedding journey, but we recommend you order these around two months before the big day so that you haven’t got so much to worry about at the last minute. It’s hard to imagine life after the wedding, but sending thank you cards is an important final part of the journey so you can thank guests for coming and for any gifts that you received. We recommend sending these a couple of months after the day. This gives you enough time to settle into married life and go on your honeymoon without making guests wait ages for their cards. Lisa Forde www.treeofhearts.co.uk 56

PLANNED TO PERFECTION I’m a groom-to-be and want to be involved with the planning process. Do you have any tips? Here are some things to consider when planning your big day: Groomsmen – The groom chooses his best man and ushers. Just be wise when choosing your best man; you want someone fun, but they also have to be responsible as well. Don’t be pressured into choosing someone you don’t want. Guestlist – Who are your must-haves on both sides? Start by writing a list of those who must be invited from your side and then begin on your second tier. You will be responsible for obtaining all addresses that your partner may not have. It’s also your responsibility to track down missing RSVPs from your side of the guest list and any missing menu choices, if applicable. Attire – What you and your groomsmen wear will depend on your wedding colours and the formality of the event. Make sure the outfits complement what the bridesmaids are wearing and doesn’t overshadow you and your partner. If you all opt for the same or similar suits, I’d suggest the groomsmen have the same ties and being the groom, you should have something more unique. Gifts – Thanking bridesmaids, groomsmen and parents for their help, support and appreciation is a wedding tradition. Personalised gifts with your wedding date or thank you note are very popular but as to what you get them will really depend on their interests, so give this some thought. Vows and speeches – If you’re writing your vows, please don’t wing them! When it comes to your speech, you should thank your guests for coming, everyone at your wedding party, maybe add a note to your partner and you could even tell the story about how you met. Just remember to keep your speech short and sweet. Host – Your wedding day will be one of the most important, meaningful and memorable days of your life. Wake up early and enjoy taking in every moment. Katy Osborne www.kovasupport.com

Whimsical ROMANCE

REGIONAL SHOOT

After a flood meant this styled shoot had to be re-arranged, the team of suppliers worked tirelessly to create this beautiful set of images Images courtesy of Grace Dove Photography

W

e had been planning this shoot, with a much wider supplier list, for a few months,” says photographer Grace Dove. “However, the week before the shoot, there was a lot of flooding, which completely threw our plans. A lot of the suppliers ended up having to pull out, but the few of us remaining were determined to make it happen, even with the weather not on our side! Within 24 hours, we completely reorganised the shoot, going from doing the whole thing at Bennetts Willow Barn, whose grounds were flooded,

to just doing prep there and driving to the Malvern Hills for an epic elopement shoot at the end of the day. Everyone mucked in, and it was a real team effort. We kept the original plan of a botanical/green theme by incorporating foliage into the bouquets and tablescape. “With the Malvern Hills, we wanted an adventure, boho feel, which we created with the bride’s walking boots, the flowercrown and denim jacket. It was the most incredible day and showed that if there is a will, there’s a way, no matter what the obstacle!” 59

Here come the girls County Wedding Magazines senior editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

I

can’t believe that in just a few months time I’ll officially become Mrs Cullen – eek! Dave and I have been engaged since Christmas Day 2020 and are due to get married this July. With all of the uncertantity surrounding COVID-19 restrictions, it’s been quite a stressful journey. However, now that the date is drawing closer I’m finally starting to feel excited. In this issue, read all about my experience going shopping for the bridesmaids’ dresses.

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

a Monday when it was quieter and I’m so glad we did! The consultant was absolutely lovely and couldn’t do enough for us. She made Kelly feel amazing and we didn’t feel pressured at all. With no time constraint, Kelly was able to try on every dress that caught her eye – it was a struggle to choose just one, she looked and felt stunning in them all. She eventually chose the same dress as Olivia, and in my humble (non-biased) opinion, they all look fabulous and I can’t wait to walk down the aisle with my beautiful friends. Overall, shopping together was a nice experience and it was great spending time with the girls, but I’d definitely recommend that fellow brides-to-be start shopping for dresses sooner rather than later – particularly if you have got quite a few bridesmaids! I also can’t stress enough to avoid popular visiting times at your chosen boutiques. It will create a completely different experience and ensured everyone feels relaxed and can enjoy it. Check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing our search for the groomsmen’s outfits and a last-minute videographer.

Choosing who I wanted to be my bridesmaids was one of the easiest decisions I had to make. My sister-in-law, Nolwenn, has been part of the family for a few years now and I really wanted to involve her in our day, so I was pleased when she wanted to be one of my bridesmaids! I also asked my two best friends and fellow County Wedding Magazines editors, Kelly and Olivia, who were over the moon when I asked them (virtually) during one of the many lockdowns. With the easy bit done, we were on to the task of choosing their bridesmaids’ dresses. With conflicting schedules and unpredictable restrictions it was hard to decide on a date that worked for everyone but we were eventually able to book an appointment for the beginning of December 2021. Shopping for their outfits was one of the things I was most excited about when we got

engaged. I love all the girls dearly and really wanted them to feel special and a part of our big day, so making sure that they were comfortable was my number one priority. I wanted them to choose their own style and the only thing I asked was that all the dresses were sage green, which worked out perfectly as the girls all love that colour – it was meant to be! We booked a Saturday appointment and oh my gosh it was busy! The girls had to share a changing room and only managed to try on a handful of dresses before our time was up. What shocked us all was just how long the dresses take to come into the store. Starting our shopping eight months early we all thought we’d have plenty of time to shop around, but we found that all of the gowns wouldn’t be in the store until early May 2022, which would only leave us with two months for alterations – this of course, sent my stress levels through the roof! Despite all of the craziness and the insane amount of people in the boutique, Olivia and Nolwenn both managed to find their dresses on that first visit; Nolwenn opted for a sleeveless A-line gown and Olivia chose a similar style but with floaty off-the-shoulder straps. Kelly and I both felt overwhelmed by the first appointment, and sadly she came away empty handed, so we decided to go back on

Here are some things that we’ve learned during wedding planning.

BRIDE’S DIARY

VENUE

PHOTOGRAPHER

❤ Make sure a registrar or celebrant is available on your wedding day before confirming with the venue. ❤ Find out what is and what isn’t included in the booking price. ❤ Check whether your venue has any sound limiters or a curfew in place. ❤ Ensure the venue has liability insurance in case the worst was to happen. ❤ How will the venue handle poor weather or last-minute changes? ❤ Before booking, check the venue’s COVID-19 policies.

❤ If like me, you’re nervous or unsure in front of the camera book a prewedding shoot – it really does make a difference. ❤ Before booking, decide on what style of photography you like and set a budget. ❤ Lots of photographers don’t have prices stated on their website; find five you like and email them all asking for quotes so that you can compare. ❤ Find out how many images you’ll be receiving and how long your photographer will spend with you on the day. ❤ Most suppliers will require a meal, so factor that into your catering budget and check if they have any dietary requirements. ❤ You’ll be spending a large portion of the day with your photographer, so it’s important you get on well, and they make you feel relaxed.

FLOWERS ❤ Some flowers are seasonal and may not be available at the time of year you’re getting married, so be prepared to discuss this with your florist. ❤ Your supplier will have a wealth of knowledge and will be able to advise you on what blooms will suit your day. ❤ Check your quotes include VAT. ❤ Think carefully about if you’d like real or dried flowers. If you’re unsure it may be worth talking to a few different companies to discuss the pros and cons. ❤ Your florist should suggest ways you can save money, for example, re-using blooms from your ceremony for the reception. ❤ There are so many ways that you can preserve your flowers after the wedding, so it’s worth looking at your options.

WEDDING DRESS ❤ Try on a variety of styles to find what best suits your shape. ❤ Trust your bridal consultant and listen to their recommendations, after all, they’re the experts. ❤ Choose a dress that you feel comfortable in and makes you feel like the best version of yourself. ❤ Wear white or skin-coloured underwear to your appointment. ❤ Start shopping nine to 12 months before the wedding to ensure you have plenty of time to get the gown in-store and alterations to be done. ❤ The shopping process can be daunting, so don’t feel pressured to purchase a dress for the sake of it, when you find the right gown, you’ll know it. 67

SMOOTH OPERATOR

Award-winning haircare brand, Innersense Organic Beauty, has launched Serenity Smoothing Cream (£24), a nutrient-rich formula suitable for all hair types delivering a flawless and bouncy blow dry with a sleek look. Baobab and frangipani help to lock in moisture, as well as providing care for hair exposed to heated styling tools and strengthening strands without weighing them down. Meanwhile, vitamin-rich mango seed butter, avocado and coconut oils nourish and boost hydration while smoothing the cuticle to reduce frizz. Find it at www.naturisimo.com 78

A GROWER, NOT A THROWER

Recycling in the beauty industry is notoriously difficult, but here’s a clever invention by award-winning eco-pencil company Sprout World, designed not only to reduce waste, but to give something beautiful and useful back to the planet – recycling at its finest I have to say! Introducing Sprout Makeup Pencils (£9.95), the world’s first zero-waste plantable make-up pencils. Yep, plantable! Just use as normal and instead of throwing them away when they become too small to use, flip them around, stick the end into a pot of damp soil and ta-da – beautiful, bee-friendly wildflowers will start to sprout within 1-2 weeks. Check out www.sproutworld.com

CHILLED-OUT SKIN

Adaptogens have been used for thousands of years in ancient Chinese medicine and ayurvedic remedies to help mitigate the effects of stress on the body, and until recently have mostly been used in herbal supplements and teas to regulate stress levels. But they could also offer the solution to stressed-out skin. MARA Volcanic Sea Clay Detox Masque (£48) contains aswagandha, a skin-strengthening herb and adaptogen powered by antioxidants, which works to fight free radicals, boost hydration and soothe stressed-out, blemish-prone skin. Find it at www.cultbeauty.co.uk

Have the ravages of winter left your skin dry, dull, sensitive, flaky and tight? As we embrace the spring, get your glow back with Q+A Snow Algae Intensive Face Cream (£12). If, like me, you’re reaching for Google, allow me to explain. Snow algae, also known as watermelon snow, is a species of green algae containing astaxanthin, a potent antioxidant great at improving dryness, sun damage and protecting against free radicals. I’ve only been using it for a couple of days and my dry skin is already showing signs of improvement. Find it at www.qandaskin.com

Having seen Skin Proud Frozen Over (£16.95) go viral on TikTok I was keen to know more about this cryotherapy gel moisturiser. Q&A Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best

TREND SETTER What wedding dress styles are popular at the moment? More than ever, brides-to-be are searching for unique dresses that are out of the ordinary and can be personalised. This trend has occurred from the ever-growing Pinterest boards and Instagram-worthy weddings. As a result, we are seeing the importance of our seamstresses more than ever. They work closely with our brides to help achieve exactly what they had envisioned. The regency era of puff sleeves are making a comeback within the bridal industry, as are square necklines and clean line skirts that are ideal for a less is more theme. We are also noticing lots of new 2022/2023 gowns with 3D detailing, so we expect this will be the next big wedding dress trend.

STEP INTO SPRING I want to incorporate flowers into my hair to tie in with my spring theme. Do you have any ideas of how I could do this?

I love adding fresh flowers into a bride’s hair as it looks elegant and beautiful. To incorporate flowers, you need to consider how it will work with your style. If you’re planning on having a low or high bun, neat or messy, your flowers need to last all day and be secure. I advise my brides to speak to their florist to organise their hair flowers. A florist will be able to wrap the flower stems onto a wire to make them stronger so they can be attached to your locks. If you have photos of your trial to show the florist, they will then be able to see the size of flower needed to fit in with your style. For a down or half-up look, fresh blooms can look soft and elegant placed at the back of the hair or even just gripping one side so you can see the flowers from the front. Another option is to wear a flower crown. This look is becoming more and more popular and has a spring/summer feel. This can be worn with the hair down and loose or an up do with loose tendrils coming down. Instead of fresh flowers, dried versions can look very effective too. Although, be aware that as lovely as it all looks, it can be very difficult to attach it without some of the tiny petals breaking off. If you don’t want to spend too much, a simple clipping of gypsophila can create a delicate look or be used for decorating the bridesmaids’ hair. ESTAMINE Possibly the Algarve’s best kept secret – an incredible restaurant located on Isla Deserta, only accessible by boat. Few places come close to this family-run gem, where you can enjoy fresh fish and seafood along with other Algarvian specialities on your very own deserted island with 360 degree ocean views. When seen from above, the restaurant itself takes the shape of a crab among the sand dunes, an architectural tribute to their neighbours scuttling along the shoreline. Clams ‘Bulhao Pato-style’, prawns, deep fried in a delicious secret spice and its charcoal grilled catch of the day, simply can’t be beaten. Visit: www.ilhadeserta.com/estamine-restaurant

BOVINO Bovnio Steakhouse can be found within Quinta do Lago itself and serves some of the finest steaks and wines around along with an apothecarythemed cocktail menu. The seafood is exquisite too and don’t forget to add a side of triplecooked chips or mac‘n’cheese. Visit: www.quintadolago.com/en/restaurants/bovino-steakhouse
