My number one piece of advice is to enjoy the process and make it about what you want. We found that many of our nearest and dearest were quite vocal about what they wanted and how the day should be, which can feel quite overwhelming at times but try to remember it’s meant to be about you and your partner. Pick things that you want, and that will make you both happy and forget about everyone else. The day goes by in a flash so take some time out just the two of you to have a chat and take everything in. Things will go wrong, but that’s okay. On the day, you won’t notice the little things, and all that will matter will be celebrating with your friends and family. Surround yourself with people that you love and trust. My bridesmaids were wonderful at keeping my nerves in check and making sure I felt like a special bride. I couldn’t have asked for better, and I can’t wait to look back on our photographs with them.

It seems like just yesterday that I was telling our loved ones that we were engaged, and here we are as husband and wife (I don’t think I’ll ever get used to saying that).

Louis Hayes-Davies, the owner, tells us: “We’re delighted to share the next stage in our brand’s journey, a dedicated space where Daimon Barber can take care of all grooming and styling needs effortlessly. More of a club than your typical barber and salon space, we offer our guests a complete and personal experience. Our talented team of barbers and stylists ensure all men’s grooming needs are professionally met, from haircuts, hair styling and wet shaves to facials. Our large retail area includes our Signature Daimon Barber Range of grooming and styling essentials and other selected luxury brands.”
Adam Richards, the general manager of the Bank House Hotel Spa & Golf Club, said: “We’ve been looking at our wedding offering for some time. After much research and discussion, it’s clear that brides and grooms want choice, not to be pigeonholed into a package that may not suit them. Our new wedding planner is a simple tool for people to find out what their actual wedding day might cost from the first enquiry. The key to our new bespoke concept is flexibility and allows couples to spend money on the elements that are important to them and leave out those that are not. No two couples are the same so no two weddings should be the same either.”

Not only that, they chose to donate 10 per cent of new client service fees to OneTreePlanted to help plant trees across theTheplanet.owner of BLACC + BLOND, Anil Salhan, commented: “We have put so much thought and effort into making our space more green, with the aim to become the most sustainable hair salon on the planet, and we’re delighted that the awards have noticed this. REAL WEDDINGS 27
Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...
Kayleigh and Dan met like most modern couples, online. “I was a single mum and had given up hope of any nice men existing,” says Kayleigh. “I saw Dan’s profile and his picture made me think of Jason Statham, so I swiped right. Not long after, we were a match, and Dan sent a message and asked for my number. He asked me out on a dinner date, and I entertained the idea until the very day when I cancelled on him, using work as an excuse. He continued to pursue a date, so I suggested bowling. We enjoyed a couple of games but politely said our goodbyes in the car park. Then, the following weekend I bumped into him in our local Asda and he asked me for coffee. It was at that point that I realised he was a genuine man with a good heart, so I would be silly to pass up the offer. We met for coffee, and from that day on, we’ve been inseparable.” Dan booked a trip for Kayleigh’s 31st birthday. “He took me to a gorgeous country hotel,” shares the bride. “We arrived and had made reservations at a nearby restaurant. We went to dinner, and the waiter who seated us asked for our coats and Dan appeared to be flustered by this. I was unaware at the time that the ring was in the inside pocket of his suit jacket, and he had to discreetly remove it from the pocket and put it on the chair behind him. We had three amazing courses and when we arrived back at the hotel, we decided to go for a walk as the sun was just going down after a beautiful hot day. After playing on a rope swing like children, Dan stopped me and got down on one knee and proposed. I never imagined him to do it so soon, but it was evident that we were made for each other, and everyone could see it. Dan told me he had the ring made as a bespoke piece, and as he went to put it on my finger, he dropped it leaving us both laughing.”
Dan and I chose a three-tier heart-shaped cake from Daves Demon Cakes. It was decorated with ivory icing, ribbon and roses. We had the two bottom tiers as jam sponges and had decided after hearing many stories of the bride and groom missing out on the cake that we would like to keep the top tier for ourselves and our family.
We wanted a property that was local, and we particularly liked that Warwick House was exclusive use which meant we were the only people at the venue on our day. It had plenty of space for us to comfortably fit all of our guests, and it also had the added bonus of a honeymoon suite and additional rooms for our friends and family to stay over too.
Mel from Your Big Day Events was full of fantastic ideas. I really wanted roses in my bouquet, so we decided to make it the main feature in all of our flowers We had a faux flower arch which framed the ceremony and we also used it behind our sweetheart top table, which made a lovely backdrop for our photos.
Our table plan was made by Pure Invitation Limited. We chose a laser cut background and had blush card mounted on top to tie in with our colour scheme. We then placed the card on a mirror, which was provided by Warwick House.

We candlespersonalisedhadmade as favours for our wedding. We wanted to keep it simple but also create a bigandguestskeepsakelovelyforourtotakeawayrememberourday.Wehiredthecentrepieces from Warwick House, and we really liked the simplicity of the hurricane vases. We used them to line the aisle during the ceremony and later moved them onto the tables for the wedding breakfast. We placed sand in the base with pillar candles to add elegance to the aisle, and for the tables, we had a wreath of flowers matching my bouquet put around the base.
My dress was a Maddison James design from Your Wedding Shop. I tried on different styles, but I believe that if you’re going to get married, you need to feel like a bride, and by having a big lace dress with a stunning train, I felt the part. I also purchased a belt that my seamstress Elizabeth Ayers Bridal & Couture attached.
REAL WEDDINGS 29
Dan decided on a blue suit and brown shoes from Peter Posh Formal Suit Hire. Dan wore full tails with a waistcoat, a blush cravat and a pocket square and our son, Harrison, was in a matching suit but without the tails.
We had disposable cameras on the tables during our wedding breakfast and a checklist of photos for our guests to capture. We also had a games room for the children which included giant snakes and ladders, mini-golf, Connect 4 and ring toss.
The part that stood out for me the most was walking down the stairs to meet my dad. I loved standing at the top of the aisle with my dad holding my hand as we paused before proceeding down together to meet my future husband. We felt extremely nervous on the day. I pulled up at Warwick House with my bridal party and spent the first 10 minutes sobbing in the car because I couldn’t believe I was getting married. People always tell you that the day goes so fast, but you don’t really understand until your day comes. From getting ready in the morning to walking the aisle felt like minutes had gone by. I even forgot to put my perfume on!Our wedding day was one of a kind, and I’m not sure many brides can say that they had all four seasons in one thethroughoutcontinuedandandmoreWesunshine.intothensnow,hadceremony,Duringday.ourweheavywhichturnedbrighthadrain,snow,moresun,thecycleday.

The person who made our day extra special was my dad. He isn’t one for public speaking and had been so nervous in the run-up to the big day. He got in touch with his sister who couldn’t attend the wedding and between them, they wrote a poem about my childhood antics. It was a tale of a father and daughter who only got to see each other at weekends and the adventures we went on. It also had the sentimental value of having my aunty involved. We are yet to go on our honeymoon as we have two small children, but we have agreed that even though we haven’t been to a sunny climate we have many years together to go on adventures, but our children won’t stay small forever.

ROMANCE Rustic Kathryn and Mike said ‘I do’ at St John The Baptist Catholic Church followed by a reception at Blithfield Lakeside Barns Images courtesy of Ginger Jam Photography 32
The couple’s original venue fell through. “We found Blithfield Lakeside Barns four months before we were due to get married,” explains Kathryn. “Whilst the fact it was available helped, the setting attracted us as it was so stunning and overlooked the reservoir. It’s only 10mins from our home and has a light and rustic“Weatmosphere.”triedtodoas much DIY as possible and asked our friends and family to help,” recalls the bride. “Our favours were wooden place names with personalised games and for our table plan, we wrote our guests’ names on cards and attached them to a white mirror.”
“I wore a Maggie Sottero gown called Ariella which I purchased at The Bridal Barn,” explains Kathryn. “I always thought I wanted a mermaid-style gown but didn’t expect to have anything with straps, pearls and crystals, but when I tried it on, I felt lovely in it and knew it was the one. I accessorised with a cathedral-length Art Deco-style veil, a vintage-inspired hair piece and a pair of earrings that originally belonged to my mother and were worn ballroom dancing in the early 70s. I received a beautiful Gucci necklace from Mike on the morning of the wedding, but due to the neckline of my dress, I wore it as a bracelet instead.”
Kathryn and Mike met online in 2015. “Mike was genuine and kind, and he liked that I was intelligent and funny,” says Kathryn. “He proposed on Christmas morning in 2019. We were at home and had come downstairs to open presents with our daughter. They both disappeared upstairs and came back with a small wrapped gift. I opened it and saw a sparkling diamond ring! Mike said: ‘well, will you?’ and I told him: ‘only if you get down on one knee.’ He did, and I said yes. Our daughter was ecstatic!”
“I had three bridesmaids that were 13, eight and seven months old, so they wore different dresses,” recalls the bride. “I started by getting a floor-length tulle design for our niece and had dresses made in ivory tulle, with a V neck and satin bodice in dusky pink for the other two. They all looked wonderful together!”
Mike and his groomsmen opted for grey suits with pink ties from Dapper Dan Formal Suit Hire For Men and Boys.
Kathryn and Mike placed flowers, candles and lights in bottles for their centrepieces. “Our blooms were from Fine Flowers,” reveals Kathryn. “We opted for a hand-tied bouquet, two for the bridesmaids, buttonholes for the groomsmen, corsages for our mums, top table arrangements, two pedestals and hexagon backdrops. All of the arrangements included roses and foliage and were described as country-garden themed.”
“We had a handmade wooden sweet cart with spindle wheels,” remembers the bride. “We also had a wooden hexagon backdrop behind the top table, photographs of us on string lights hanging over the cake table and photos of our dads who are both in heaven.”
Kathryn arrived in an Imperial Landaulette vintage car from Anthony James Wedding Cars. “Mike chose a Mustang Shelby GT500 as seen in Fast & Furious and Gone in 60 Seconds,” says Kathryn. “It really looked the part!” “Instead of a three-course meal, we opted for afternoon tea with vintagestyled crockery provided by Derby Vintage China Hire,” shares the bride. “It included sandwiches, homemade scotch eggs, sausage rolls, pork pies, scones served with jam and clotted cream and a selection of cakes.”
DRESSED TO IMPRESS
REAL WEDDINGS 33
“We were originally supposed to get married in April 2021,” shares the bride. “We decided to postpone in September 2020 for another year as the COVID-19 rates had gotten worse. As we weren’t getting any younger, we decided to try for a baby. We welcomed our daughter in September 2021, which meant there was an extra special guest in attendance.”
SETTING THE SCENE
“Mike was nervous on the morning of the wedding,” remembers the bride. “I was so excited to finally be marrying the man of my dreams. We loved saying our vows in front of our family and friends, and having our first dance was so lovely. We have to say a special thanks to Ginger Jam Photography and Thomas Mason Films. It felt like we had two extra friends with us rather than suppliers working. They helped throughout the day, and our guests commented on how friendly they were.”
HONEYMOON Kathryn and Mike went to Cyprus for their honeymoon. “We went for 10 days as a family,” says Kathryn. “We planned it together as we wanted somewhere family-friendly. It was amazing to relax after a stressful few months, but it also meant we didn’t get the wedding blues.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS
TIME TO CELEBRATE
“We kept our guests entertained with a few garden games,” reveals Kathryn. “The mini table games and sweet cart kept everyone happy, as did our speeches. We had a DJ from TCK Entertainments play music in the afternoon and get the party started in the evening. We also had a magic mirror with props, which everyone got involved with. A copy of each photo was included in a guest book, and we loved looking through this.”

Aimee and George met at work. “We were instantly attracted to each other,” says Aimee. “George was on secondment for a year, and when he returned, he plucked up the courage to ask me on a date. I couldn’t say ‘yes’ quick enough, and the rest is history.”

George arranged a surprise trip to Hawaii for Aimee’s 30th birthday. “He had everything planned for some time but decided to pop the question a day into the trip as he couldn’t stand to wait,” shares the bride. “We rushed down to the beach before the sun set, and George revealed a customised deck of Top Trumps with our friends and family on them. After a minute or so, I turned over a card which said ‘will you marry me?’ and George got down on one knee.” Here she shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...
REAL WEDDINGS 37
George and I chose a three-tier blue cake from F & H Country Cakes. The exterior was fairly simple and the flavours were chocolate, blueberry and lemon. We topped the cake with little Lego figurines of us. as George loves Lego, and we have visited Lego HQ in Billund.
The castle has some beautiful urns at the bottom of the main set of stairs, whichwe filled with white roses and blue hydrangeas from Floral Roundabout. Wewanted something simple and elegant, and the hydrangeas were a nod to George’smum, who passed away in his 20s. We had a floral centrepiece at the ceremony, which we also used on the main table during dinner.
For our favours, we gave our guests seeds, which we purchased from Elle Bee Design. We wanted something that was environmentally sustainable which people would use. We also included some keys that were bottle openers as we liked the idea of unlocking/opening the next stage of our lives. Our table plan was also from Elle Bee Design. We chose table names based on places we have been to and loved, such as Hawaii and Milovice.
Eastnor Castle is simply magical, the grounds and interior of the castle are breathtaking, and they offer attractive pricing bearing in mind how grand it is. We wanted somewhere that felt like a fairytale and a few of our guests told us that it was the best wedding they’d ever been to, which we were thrilled with.
38
The centrepieces were elaborate candelabra with ivy creeping over them as we love the idea of nature taking over. It all felt quite Gothic and a little bit like the castle from Beauty and the Beast.
I wore a Louise Bentley dress from The Wedding Wardrobe that was regal and connected to nature. I accessorised with white sapphire earrings and a flower crown.
George chose a custom-made Tom James Company suit. He went with ablue cheque fabric with a golden brown herringbone waistcoat and Loakebrogues. The groomsmen all wore blue Ted Baker morning suits with a teal, peacock lining. The bridesmaids opted for sky-blue satin gowns from Chi Chi London, and the younger girls had white satin versions.
We had some circus games and a photo booth with a guest book for people to glue their pictures in. It rained on the day, but thankfully some of the games worked indoors.
Eastnor Castle required us to use their caterers, A to Zest, who were fantastic! We designed a menu with them which included dishes that we have enjoyed together as a couple over the years.
REAL WEDDINGS 39
We booked a live band through Entertainment Nation called Sound Plan, who were great. They accommodated a personal set list with loads of our favourite tracks.
It was important to George that we had a midnight feast, specifically pork baps, so we organised for Pig On The Hill to bring a hog roast in a little horsebox, which parked outside the front of the castle in the evening. It was a bit hit! I was nervous throughout the day, but George switched from being mega-panicked in the lead-up to the day to a complete show-stealer, he was really relaxed and loved the fuss! When I got to the end of the aisle, George squeezed my hand and told me how beautiful I looked, and from there, I knew the day would go fine.

We have to give a huge shoutout to Weddings by AR. The Bridgerton effect
As nearly all of the filming for the show took place in the South of England, many of the real locations you see in the show can in fact be hired out for your wedding celebrations.
The parklands of Stowe House (www.stowe.co.uk) in Bedfordshire was the location for these scenes, the 17th-century Ducal Palace boasts individuality and elegance for a fairytale wedding.
Everyone’s favourite period drama re-entered our lives with a bang at the end of March when season two of Bridgerton became Netflix’s most viewed English-language TV series, watched for 251.7 million hours in its debut week alone.
VENUES
One aspect that defines the awe-inspiring beauty of the show is the grand country homes and sweeping ballrooms.
In the opening episode of the first season, the outdoor Vauxhall Ball set the standard for the grandness we could expect.
The ballrooms in Leigh Court (www.leighcourt.co.uk) in Bristol are where we see many of the characters dance together at a number of parties held throughout the series. The 19th-century mansion is surrounded by 27 acres of wooded grounds and green lawns, and the grand double staircase in the Great Hall is perfect for making your first entrance as a married couple.
COLOUR PALETTE The Regency era was defined by the baby blue colour that can be spotted in almost every episode. Known as Regency blue, it is the perfect hue to weave into your flowers, decorations or dress code. For a 21st-century update, Pantone have named the colour of 2022 ‘Very Peri’. The shade of violet-infused blue is perfect for a subtle nod to the Bridgerton world. Soft tones of blush and pink were also extremely popular at the time and are perfect for creating an ultra romantic setting when you tie the knot. Take inspiration from Princess Beatrice of York’s wedding to Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in summer of 2020, the pretty pinks and fresh natural palette were a more modern twist on a classic regal wedding.
And the show is certainly not going anywhere, having been renewed for both seasons three and four back in April of last year, following the huge success of season one. Many of us are captivated by the opulence and extravagance of high society shown on our screens and so desperate to feed some historical glamour into our own lives – especially during our big day. Regency era and Bridgerton-themed celebrations are set to be one of the biggest wedding trends this year. Achieving this lavish style may seem impossible at first but we’ve broken down some of the simplest ways to inject 18th-century luxury into your nuptials.

Empire waist gowns were extremely popular during the time period and it’s unsurprising considering how flattering they are. For an ultraromantic style look for a dress with capped sleeves also. Corsets were, of course, a huge part of fashion in the Regency era and now they are once again having resurgence. Whilst during the time period they were a part of the undergarments worn by the bride, now they can be a featured part of your ensemble.
FLOWERS Any watcher of Bridgerton will know the budget they had for flowers when making the show was pretty impressive. The dreamy purple wisteria that draped over the exterior of the Bridgerton family’s residence caused fans mass hysteria, as many were keen to recreate the swoonworthyAlthoughlook.it can be hard to get your hands on, if you’re having a spring time wedding you may be lucky as many country house wedding venues have wisteria climbing up the outside of their buildings. It’s definitely something worth asking your venue about.Ifyou want to recreate the lush floral arrangements seen in Daphne’s wedding to the Duke of Hastings in the first season, shown last year, English garden-style arrangements with fresh greenery are best to create that clean and natural setting. Standing beneath a floral arch, just like Daphne and Simon, when saying your vows will ensure your photographer can capture some dreamy and ethereal images from your ceremony.
Sending out your invitations to your guests is one of the first ways to set the tone for your wedding. Handwritten notes featuring swooping calligraphy perfectly encapsulate the elegant nature of yourIncorporatecelebration.watercolour and impressionist-style florals into your stationery for a whimsical affair. Gold detailing and other refined touches make sure your wedding stationery gives a perfect nod to the Regency era. Sealing your invites with a wax seal will make guests feel as though they’re receiving salacious gossip from Lady Whistledown herself.
One easy way to add a touch of gilded glamour to your look is by accessorising with opera gloves. To modernise your wedding gown a sheer pair is the way forward.

FASHION It’s not just on screen fashion that has been inspired by the extravagance of the Regency era. Those attending this year’s Met Gala were asked to adhere to the dress code ‘Gilded Glamour’, taking inspiration from the high society of Gilded Age New York during the late 1800s. For a wedding gown fit to make you a diamond of the first water lots of inspiration can be taken from the dresses of this time.
Grooms can take inspiration from the dukes of Bridgerton and wear a morning suit complete with a tailcoat for a look that can compete with Jane Austen’s Mr Darcy. To ensure all your guests are involved with the theme of your celebrations, a black tie or formal wear dress code can encourage everyone to attend in their finery.
CAKE One of the most spectacular visuals from Daphne and Simon’s wedding was a massive wedding cake that stood at 4.5-foot tall. In addition to its impressive height, the centrepiece was extremely detailed, right down to the Bridgerton and Hastings crests iced on. Detailed, extravagant cakes are certainly making a comeback in 2022. This year the UK’s oldest British caterer is recreating a royal wedding cake made by its founder 126 years ago, to celebrate their 175thSearcy’sanniversary.catering (https://searcys.co.uk) has taken a trip back through its archives to the cake made for the1896 royal wedding of Princess Maud, then the future Queen of Norway, to Prince Carl of Five-tiersDenmark.of Dundee fruit cake are covered with delicate marzipan and white and gold lattice work icing before topped with carefully crafted sugar work of flowers, fruits, cherubs and lions all recreated by the cakemakers. This style of cake is perfect for those going all out regalia-inspired on their wedding day. Pressed floral cakes are a great option for those still inspired by the 18th century but wanting a more earthy, whimsical feel for their day. Bakeries typically use edible flowers grown, picked and hand-pressed. They can be designed according to your favourite flowers and even match your bouquet.
DECORATION Maximalists rejoice as the only way to decorate a Regency era-inspired wedding is to go all out. And we mean ALL OUT. Look to see if your venue has a chandelier, as this is a perfect way to recreate the grand atmosphere seen in the Bridgerton world. Oversized centrepieces are a signature of nearly all the weddings and balls held in the series. Work with your florist and wedding planner to create some awe-inspiring table decorations your guest will remember.
One of the ofmemorablemostelements Bridgerton that audiences hold close to their heart is the orchestral renditions of pop throughoutsongsthe show.
45 INSPIRATION
For your tableware, fine, floral china is a gorgeous nod to 18th-century Britain and the perfect decorative touch for the detail-orientated bride. Gold cutlery or gold-rimmed glassware flaunt opulence and abundance but can be inexpensive if hired. Having a champagne tower at your reception is the perfect indulgence enjoyed by high society – and your guests too. It’s a great touch to follow your wedding toast or a grand welcome as your guests enter.
ENTERTAINMENT
Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift played by string ensemble provides the backdrop for Anthony Bridgerton and Kate Sharma’s courtship in season two. If you wish to recreate this soundtrack for your own love story, a string quartet or harpist will produce the perfect atmosphere for walking down the aisle or during your first dance. If you too want a mixture of classical and chart tunes, ask your guests to suggest some of their favourite tracks to be played by your musicians. If you plan on getting hitched in the warmer months, traditional lawn games are an amazing era-inspired way to entertain your guests after the ceremony. A game of croquet before the evening celebrations is fun for both young and older guests alike.

“To ensure your flowers look their best, it’s important to pick options that are in season. To create a winter-inspired wedding, look for delicate ranunculus, camellia and anemones and pair these with berries to create a festive feel. Foliage is also important, use brunia, silver eucalyptus and pine cones, but don’t be afraid to incorporate spruce to create a winter wonderland.” –Kerry from Sorella Florist & Event Stylist.
“For flowers that look their best and have a real impact, see what’s currently in season. Autumn has some amazing options such as dahlias, gladioli, anemone crocosmia and cosmos, and you could also incorporate berries, seed heads and grasses. It’s the time for harvest, so you can go to town on edible elements within your floral designs.”
“The all-dried flower trend is halting now, and I’m finding that if dried materials are requested, it’s now in conjunction with fresh flowers. We’re seeing a mixture of these two styles, particularly in a warm, peachy colour scheme. The colour lilac/mauve is also creeping into couples’ arrangements.”

“Brides are requesting lush, all-flower bouquets with no foliage, and are loving very big blousy blooms, particularly roses.” – Caroline from Flowerology. “Flowers such as dahlias are available in lots of shades and can be a good substitute for a rose if you prefer to step away from the more traditional look. Astilbe adds interest and texture, while wax flowers, asters and lavender create a more wild look. Iris or delphinium can work well if you need to create height in your arrangements whilst still injecting interest.” – Kerry from Sorella Florist & Event Stylist.

Melissa x
It’s finally here, my last bride’s diary entry before I become a married woman! When we first got engaged nearly 18 months ago, the wedding seemed so far away that it almost didn’t feel real, and yet here we are about to walk down the aisle. The last few weeks of planning have been a bit manic with all of our suppliers getting in touch asking for lastminute details, and although it can feel a little overwhelming, it’s also really exciting! This issue is all about my dress alterations, hair and make-up trial and keeping positive as the big day approaches...
Having had several meltdowns over this, my advice to any nearlyweds-to-be is to try not to panic and trust your suppliers. As long as they have good reviews and are confident in their capabilities, then leave it to them – they’re the experts after all!
FACING FACTS
As someone who likes to micromanage everything, this situation was certainly out of my comfort zone. I took two of my bridesmaids with me for my first appointment for moral support, and the seamstress, Danielle, was wonderful. She made us feel really at ease and like nothing was too much trouble. She knew right away how to alter my dress and was able to do it within a quick timeframe. I left the appointment feeling much calmer but also a little apprehensive about how the dress would eventually turn out. Fast forward a month, it was time for my second fitting and for the bridesmaids’ dresses to be altered. After a morning of panicking and worrying, I can’t put into words how relieved I felt when I tried on my dress and it fit like a glove. It still needed a few tweaks here and there, but overall I felt much happier as I was no longer drowning in a sea of fabric and worrying that my boobs might fall out at a moment’s notice! Danielle was also very reassuring to the bridesmaids who were worried about parts of their dresses and, within a week, we had all three back looking perfect.
FITS LIKE A GLOVE I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t incredibly nervous for my first dress fitting. I purchased my gown over a year ago, and I’ve gone through phases during that time where I’ve loved it and also doubted it. It was a size too big when I bought it, so looking back at the pictures it was hard to imagine what it would look like fitting properly. I think my main worry was ‘what if it doesn’t look like I imagined or even worse, what if the seamstress makes it too small or too short!?’

From Miss to Mrs
As someone who has only worn make-up once for prom night many years ago, I was unsure of what I wanted when it came to my bridal make-up. Make-up is not my forte and, much to my friends’ amusement, I can’t tell you the difference between highlighter, foundation and concealer – and that’s just for starters! For this reason, I chose a hair stylist and make-up artist with great reviews, who are familiar with my venue and whole-heartedly put my trust in them. During my trial, she sat me down and asked what I wanted, and I was honest and said ‘no idea’. She laughed and reassured me that I’m not the only woman in the world who doesn’t wear make-up (even though it feels like it sometimes). She went for a very natural look and talked me through the process. Even though my make-up looked great and was very subtle, it was still a shock to see myself with it on. It took me the whole day to get used to it, but I was really pleased with the result, and felt like a princess.Whenit comes to hair (you’ll be pleased to hear I’m not as clueless), I had a rough idea of what style I wanted but was torn between a half up and half down look or an up do. My hair stylist was wonderful! She created both looks for me, took loads of pictures and made sure I was happy with both styles. After a lot of deliberation I’ve decided on an up do, as my dress has dramatic front and back detailing that I didn’t want anything to detract from. I left my hair and make-up in place, like they suggested, for the whole day and it still looked wonderful by 11pm. I was really pleased with the whole experience and being dressed up made me feel so excited to finally marry my best friend. Thank you all for sticking with me throughout my wedding journey. I hope you enjoy planning your own day and everything turns out perfectly!

BRIDE’S DIARY 51
CHOOSING YOUR GROOMSMEN Thankfully this was quite an easy one for me. My best man has been my closest ally and confident for 15 years now, so there was no hesitation in my mind when asking him. My biggest concern was that having four groomsmen might be too many, but I couldn’t imagine any of them not being next to me for support, so the thought of losing one of them from the party would have been like removing oxygen. Another thing I’m grateful for is that they all get along brilliantly. I’ve heard some real horror stories about infighting between people’s bridesmaids and groomsmen, so this is definitely something to consider when selecting your party. You might love them all, but do they like each other? You’d think that people would pull together for their friend’s biggest day, but you never know.

Hindsight is a marvellous thing
wedding is don’t lose any sleep over not inviting someone, chances are they probably weren’t going to invite you to their wedding anyway!
Hello readers, as I’m sure you’re all well aware, my beautiful Melissa has been detailing our journey from our couch-based lockdown proposal to the wedding altar, and what a journey it has been! Thankfully Melissa is the most organised person on the planet, so my involvement in this process has been minimal at best, however that being said, I’ve picked up one or two things along the way that Melissa has generously given me this space to share...
Melissa’s hubby-to-be opens a window into the wedding planning journey from the groom’s perspective
PLANNING YOUR STAG DO I’ll be honest, I never really saw the purpose of a stag do. Admittedly in my mind, I had this warped perception of the event being a trip to a dubious location to take part in nefarious activities. I’m not a particularly good drinker, and as I creep onto the darker side of my 30s, I’m even worse at handling a hangover, so the prospect of this seemed less than appealing. Sitting down to discuss with my (similarly worldweary) best man, we came to the reassuring realisation that a stag do can be whatever you want it to be. In my instance, I like Centre Parcs, and the thought of a trip there (and many, many barbecues) seemed like a slice of heaven, so this was a bit of a no-brainer. Ultimately my advice to any groom-to-be is don’t be afraid to book something that will make you happy. If your groomsmen deserve their place in your party, they won’t challenge your choices.
THE SPEECH This is a big one, probably the biggest responsibility of the groom. The wedding day is such a big event in a person’s life, and the speeches really stick with attendees – good or bad! My first piece of advice would be not to leave it to the last minute. It’s certainly one of those things that can be put off, but I promise it won’t be worth the anxiety! There are thousands of great speech templates online that you can use as a starting point. Once I got started, I found writing about my loved ones and the significance of the day was easy, as it’s your opportunity to be honest, and just gush about everything. You proposed for a reason and this is your chance to share it with everyone, including your bride. Write from your heart, speak from the bottom of your lungs and try not to stare at your feet the whole time! Oh, and practicing the speech once or twice before the big day probably isn’t a bad idea!
Thank you for reading and good luck!

GUEST LIST Being the social beast I am, I found putting together a finalised wedding guest list quite difficult. Much to Melissa’s dismay I wanted to invite everyone I’d ever met and their postman. However, (thankfully) the capacity of our venue and overall budget (I don’t think I appreciated how expensive day guests are) put the brakes on my invite rampage and forced me to reign in my somewhat.expectationsIfoundthatIfeltquiteguiltyaboutnotinvitingeveryoneI’veeverspokento,butyoudefinitelydoneedtodrawthelinesomewhere.Myadvicetoanyoneplanninga

A touch of class
Amelia Thompson, the owner of Amelia Thompson Weddings, worked with a group of talented suppliers to create this styled shoot. “I made contact with Swinfen Hall Hotel, as I knew this Grade II* listed 18th-century manor house would be the perfect backdrop for our shoot,” says Amelia. “Everything about these images are luxurious, from the two stunning gowns and dinner tuxedo to the incredible floral arrangements. We used a bold colour palette inspired by the latest wedding trends, incorporating this into the florals, stationery and attire.
We showcased two beautiful gowns to represent both a day and evening look. These Abella and Maggie Sottero gowns were provided by Wedding Belles of Four Oaks and accompanied by elegant pearl accessories. The groom wore a classic tuxedo provided by Sanders Hirewear. All the suppliers pulled their expertise together and created an incredible shoot which we are all very proud of. To capture all the elements of this fantastic shoot was Creative Depiction Studio, who has a non-obtrusive and candid style.”

My wife-to-be and I want to find the perfect photographer. How do you suggest we go about this?
Choosing a wedding band who’ll keep everyone entertained can be tricky, so we suggest you hire a pop and rock band. These versatile groups will likely play everything from 50s rock ‘n’ roll, to soul classics and indie anthems as well as modern chart hits, so there’s something for everyone to Alternatively, enjoy. an acoustic folk band would also work really well. They tend to have similar repertoires to pop and rock bands but add a folky twist to each song. They’ll turn up in rustic attire, making them perfect for barn-style weddings. Before you choose a band, search through their repertoire or sample set list to get a feel for what they are likely to play. If you’re struggling to decide, then by all means phone an agency to ask for suggestions – they’ll be more than happy to help!
We have guests of all ages coming to our wedding, and we want a band that will keep them all entertained. Do you have any suggestions?
DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY
Listen to any recommendations from your venue or loved ones. It’s reassuring to know someone has worked with them before and that they deliver a high-quality product. Lastly, meet any photographers you have short listed face-to-face or call them for a chat. You will spend a large amount of your wedding day with them, so it’s important you gel. Do they put you at ease? Does the conversation flow? The more relaxed you are with your photographer, the more natural your photos will be.
Our experts solve your problems
Finding the perfect photographer can be tricky as there are so many to choose from. Look online for examples and see what sort of style you gravitate towards. For example, is it light and airy or documentary? Once you’ve decided on this, begin searching for photographers with that style.

Begin by asking if the supplier charges by the hour or by part of the day? Weddings rarely run on time, so it’s a good idea to check that the harpist won’t suddenly stop and depart after two hours! Are they willing to play the kind of music that you like? Can they provide you with sample clips or videos of them performing and are they willing to learn a piece of music of your choice?
Buying a suit online is easy enough, but buying one that fits well and looks good is a little more complicated. Though tailoring is an art, it’s also a science of sorts with endless variables and numbers to input and weigh up. Ordering a suit without measurements is like driving blindfolded. The simplest way of finding yours is to measure an existing suit that you like the fit of. Most retailers have instructions for how they measure their garments, but in any case these are the general rules:
Not knowing where to start may seem daunting and sometimes even challenging but try and take the time to enjoy the planning process. Start by doing your research and creating a visual moodboard for your big day. This will help you understand what sort of venues to look for and give you an idea of the cost. Next, create a plan for your nuptials and prepare a list of questions based on this before visiting each venue. You may have a large party and need to know crucial details such as capacities, or whether the property can hold civil ceremonies or evening celebrations. Keep in mind how you can utilise each space to save you from having to book more than one venue.
You will need to discuss whether or not you will need amplification. Most harpists can provide their own, but some venues can help with this if not. Be aware that marquees tend to absorb sound, so amplification is recommended.Cantheyplay
I’ve just started planning and want to find the perfect venue. What should we take into consideration before booking?

THE PERFECT CHOICE
Waist: Take a pair of trousers that fit well (jeans or chinos will work just fine) and lay them completely flat. Measure the waistband from edge to edge, and double the result to get your waist measurement. Otherwise, wrap the tape around the part of your body where your waistband usually sits.
Chest: Lay the jacket flat with all buttons closed and run a measuring tape from armpit to armpit. If you don’t have a jacket that fits well, have someone measure around the broadest part of your chest (usually around nipple height), under your arms and level with the ground. Keep a finger between the tape and your body to allow for comfort.
Inseam: Lay a pair of existing trousers flat and measure the distance from the fork of the trousers (where both legs meet) to the hem. If you don’t have a pair with the right inseam, stand straight-legged and measure the inside of your leg from your groin to where you want your trousers to end (between your ankle and the top of your shoe sole). It’s important to try and avoid gowns that will compete for the limelight and that each dress represents the brides’ personalities and styles too. For instance, one dress might be a princess ballgown whilst the other could be a sexy, low back number – this will look great as long as the fabrics work together. Fabrics, colour and embellishments can make a big difference to the overall look. Remember its your choice and as long as you’re both happy, the only thing your guests will remember is that you looked amazing and that they had a great day celebrating your wedding with you, after all, that’s what it’s all about.

We recommend having your appointments at the same time. We have two beautiful suites adjacent to each other where the same party of guests can view both brides without them seeing each other. We usually have two stylists who work together to ensure that the dresses don’t clash but work together to create an overall showstopping look.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDES
FALL IN LOVE
What hairstyles would you suggest for an autumn wedding? For autumn brides, try incorporating rustic colours into your hair accessories, including burgundy, oranges, chocolates and reds. I find dried flowers for the bride, and bridal party work very well as they are long-lasting and create a seasonal feel.
Q&A andFashionbeauty
Fishtail plaits are great for this time of year as they can be pulled out as big as needed. Alternatively, look at a curled half-up style, or a full twisted up do with a dried flower comb, pins or a flower crown.

“Shimmering champagne gold is the most subtle of this palette’s six-shade collection, creating a soft, glowing look that I loved. While those looking for a bold, striking look, will adore the darker brown options. The other shades are red/gold inspired and all suited my skin tone perfectly. Each hue is easily blendable and all work well as a subtle daytime or standout evening look. They’re long-lasting and after a full day, my eyes still looked fabulous.”

“I’m always on the lookout for pigmented eyeshadows that are quick and easy to apply, and this dual-ended product didn’t disappoint. On one end of the stick is a creamy crayon that glides over the eyes and blends out beautifully, then flip the product over to find a non-sticky glitter liquid that stays on all day – it’s the perfect duo!” – Olivia Gibson YOU CAUGHT MY EYE!

“This fab new kit has everything you need to create the perfect brow. I won’t lie I panicked slightly when I opened it up, not knowing where to start, but the super-helpful folk at Deck of Scarlet have included a stepby-step how to on the reverse, so all was well. The final look is subtle and totally natural, the perfect complement to a bridal make-up look. The highlight for me is the sculpting wax. It held my brows in place all day without leaving them feeling greasy or crunchy – both of which I’ve experienced with other products!”
“In the spirit of full disclosure, I did not get this No Makeup concept initially. But having tried it, I’m more than a convert, I’m an addict! The light-reflecting pigments provide a soft, satin finish while the serum texture formulated with acyl-glutathione means it glides on and blends like a dream. It didn’t crease and my eyes looked brighter. It also acts as a great base for a bolder eyeshadow look, but works just as well on its own for subtle everyday wear.”

“Hypoallergenic, ph balanced, paraben-free, gluten-free, mercury-free and formulated with eco-cert approved ingredients – what’s the catch? There doesn’t seem to be one! I was a touch sceptical at first, but I’m actually rather impressed with it. The formula is silky when wet and completely matte when dry. Although I didn’t put it to the test of crying and have no skin allergies, I can confirm that it’s smudge-proof, builds well without getting claggy and was very kind on my eyes.”

THE LANDINGS RESORT
The Landings Resort & Spa is a beachfront hotel with a private marina, positioned on Rodney Bay. The Resort invites you to enhance your stay with its all-inclusive package, allowing you not only to sample their extensive food and beverage offerings but full access to the quality fitness centre, unlimited use of the sea kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and snorkelling gear. During my stay, I enjoyed the resort’s entertainment. Taking in the Caribbean vibes, we enjoyed a delicious barbecue feast on the beach while watching fire throwers and limbo dancers doing their thing on the stage… and did I mention there was rum punch?! If your honeymoon is more of a familymoon, the resort has you covered with its awesome Kids Club and babysitting service. What more could you ask for?
As the St. Lucians say, “No pressure, no problem!” So many tropical islands provide luxury, but only St. Lucia offers this alongside the feeling of joy and laughter courtesy of the amazing people. Such a friendly country, I was so warmly welcomed – and laughed a lot! This is the ultimate location to unwind after planning your big day. If you don’t know much about St. Lucia, it’s an eastern Caribbean Island with a pair of dramatically tapered mountains, known as the Pitons. These volcanic mounds are a spectacular landmark of the island, lush and green and ready for the adventurer in you to explore. St. Lucia’s tropical climate makes it a prime spot for year-round sunshine and warm weather. Prepare for short downpours as those surrounding rainforests bursting with colour need watering.
Enjoy breathtaking, tropical views whilst listening to turquoise waters rolling in with a glass of St. Lucia’s famous rum punch in hand 86
Caribbean vibes
The revamped, luxurious 7,000-square-foot spa at The Landings features serene therapy rooms, some with outdoor hydrotherapy terraces so you can relax and take in the views after your treatment. As well as enjoying massages, manis and pedis, you can request a hair stylist to ensure your locks have full attention during your fabulous stay. There’s also a state-of-the-art fitness centre with on-site staff and personal trainers to keep you in shape.
If you like to do more than lay on a sun lounger, then St. Lucia has much to offer whether that’s zip-ling through the rainforest or taking a guided hike up St. Lucia’s signature Pitons. During my stay, I enjoyed a visit to Project Chocolat from the well-known Hotel Chocolat. I was blown away by the luscious rainforest location, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to the cacao groves. I was then invited to make my very own chocolate bar and tasted some amazing foods from their cacao inspired menu which included cacao mac ‘n cheese and even cacao burgers!
FIVE STAR LUXURY
You can’t go to the Caribbean without enjoying the freshest seafood. However, the local specialties are a must try from curried goat to breadfruit (similar to potatoes but sweeter and starchier), and saltfish (stewed fish, which is usually sold dried and salted, with boiled green bananas, locally referred to as green fig).

Whatever your accommodation preference: marina view, beachfront or ocean view, you’ll be blown away. My marina view suite was equipped with a state-of-the-art kitchen and private plunge pool. Listening to the birds with a cup of tea in hand in my plunge pool is a memory I’ll never forget.

There were countless reasons why Sri Lanka was my number one bucket list destination – with the tropical island pipping New Zealand, the Maldives and Vietnam to the top spot – but the one that stood out to me is the fact it is a Buddhist country, with a culture based on peace and family.
MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES
An island country nestled in South Asia, Sri Lanka has always been a bucket-list destination for Louise Prance, with her recent trip living up to her expectations and then some… 88
Other highlights for fellow foodies included high tea looking out over the ocean, plus the authentic Sri Lankan cooking lesson and Chef’s Table Experience and dinner – all of which are able to be booked directly through the hotel. If you’re looking for a special honeymoon treat – I’d recommend all of the above!
While tired and hungry from our journey, these emotions were soon replaced with appreciation of the traditional welcome we received. Heading into the hotel we were given a quick tour of the awe-inspiring grounds and facilities, and it was straight down to breakfast. With many restaurants on site, Ottimo and Zest are used as a buffet option for all three meals, suffice to say, there’s something for everyone. However, when in Rome and all that – we immediately tucked into curry for breakfast, a habit we all continued throughout the stay.
Travel goals
While the unstable social climate was garnering news coverage at the time of my trip, there is not one point during my stay that I felt any unrest. From the second the tropical heat hit me as I arrived, to the moment I stepped back on the plane with a heavy heart upon my departure, I felt totally secure.
A GASTRONOMIC DELIGHT
The flight time may be long, however, it was comfortable, and oh boy, does Sri Lanka make up for the time spent in the air. Upon arrival at the airport, we were whisked away at a rate of knots towards our destination of Cinnamon Bentota Beach hotel. My advice? Save the jet lag slumber for a little while longer, as you’d be mistaken to not fully immerse yourself in the changing landscape you’ll experience on the journey there. The hustle and bustle of Colombo is an assault to the senses – albeit an exciting one. Arriving in the morning, we watched as parents took their children to school on TukTuks and workers started their day. However, soon enough, the city rolled away and we were treated to the lush green landscape Sri Lanka is so famous for. Arriving at the Cinnamon Beach Hotel was an altogether memorable experience. A luxurious property nestled in the mesmerising Indian Ocean along the southern coast of Sri Lanka, it has a heritage dating back to the 60’s and was designed by one of Asia’s most influential architects, Geoffrey Bawa. It is the ultimate tropical destination perfect for an art and architecture enthusiast or a lover of exquisite oceans.
OUT ON THE WATER However, for me, the highlight was most definitely the boat ride on the Madu Ganga and visit to the Mangrove Forest. With an excellent tour guide, we jetted down the river doing our best to spot all the animals that were highlighted as making the river their home. From bear monkeys to water monitors to jellyfish, to kingfisher’s – it was a veritable treat for an animal lover like me. The jury is still out on whether I’m happy or disappointed that the crocodiles kept themselves at bay. And with Mangrove forests stabilising the coastline, reducing erosion from storm surges, currents, waves, and tides, the intricate root system of mangroves also makes these forests attractive to fish and other organisms seeking food and shelter fromWithpredators.littlestops along the way, it was truly special to see cinnamon being made amidst the forest –and I’d recommend bringing some pocket change as it’ll be a feat to walk away empty handed. If you’re one for a spot of shopping combined with a walking tour of a beautiful town, make sure you head to Galle. We combined this with the river tour, and it was well worth the hour’s drive. A stunning town steeped in history there are views for miles and it would be well worth booking with Walkers Tours, and in particular Ashoka Dissanayke, to learn more about this beautifully resplendent town’s heritage. If you do head to Galle, don’t forget to leave space in your luggage for your journey home. With boutique shops and traditional stores alike, I’d challenge anyone to leave empty handed. If you’re looking for souvenirs or mementos of your trip – this is the place to get them.

Well known for its jungles, Sri Lanka certainly didn’t disappoint on this front. Tearing ourselves away from the array of calming pools – and pool bar – we headed to the Lunuganga Geoffrey Bawa’s Country Estate, where we were treated to a tour. If art and culture is your thing – this is one excursion not to be missed. The country house of the renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, the estate is just a short distance from the hotel, and had been used as a cinnamon estate during the Dutch era and then a rubber plantation under the British. In 1949, the estate was bought by Bawa and was converted into a weekend house where he created a tropical version of a European Renaissance Garden. It took the architect 40 years to complete the house.
A PEACEFUL NIGHT’S SLEEP Cinnamon Bentota Beach offers 16 Suites with unique sets of artworks that were commissioned from Sri Lankan artists as part of Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts’ pledge to support the local arts and crafts. Eight artists were commissioned to depict a theme and record what they felt the name of the suite meant to them - resulting in each suite telling a story of the people and languages of Sri Lanka.

ADRENALINE JUNKIE If watersports are your thing, you won’t be disappointed at Cinnamon Bentota Beach. Taking place on the Bentota river, there are endless options from water skiing, to jet skis, banana boats and doughnuts. While first trying my hand at the doughnuts, the jet ski was a definite front runner. With the water so calm and the river so vast, it was the perfect opportunity to open up and let rip!
TOURISM SUPPORT Sri Lanka has had its fair share of upheaval, from the 2004 Tsunami, the terrorist attacks in 2019 and now the national crisis. However, in my opinion this is all the more reason to go and visit this wonderful country, and give its tourism industry the boost it so desperately needs. Not only did I feel safe wherever I travelled in Sri Lanka, I am already planning my next trip back, and this time I may buy an open-ended ticket home…
