I
t dawned on me a few weeks ago that this is my final issue before I become a married woman – it still feels weird saying that! Our July 2022 wedding is just around the corner, and I don’t know where the time has gone. I’ve just had my final dress fitting, my hair and make-up trial and confirmed all the last-minute details but I still feel like I’m forgetting something! My partner and I are planning to sit down together at the end of the month and iron out all the small details so we can spend the next few weeks relaxing. We were finally able to notice this month, which was a big relief. Our local registry office is still overwhelmed by the backlog caused by the pandemic and is only taking bookings for weddings three months in advance, so we’ve had to wait until now to book our appointment, but thankfully it all went well. If you’re due to tie the knot soon, keep checking your council’s website for availability, as appointments are hard to come by. This issue, to help you on your planning journey, we’ve put together showstopping features focusing on cakes and bridal boutiques. We’re also looking at venues in Sutton Coldfield, Lichfield, Tamworth & North Birmingham, the latest fashion trends and must-see honeymoon destinations. You can submit your wedding or styled shoot at melissa.barker@kdeventsandpublishing.com or www.yourwestmidlands.wedding/get-involved-real-wedding

LOCAL NEWS

SWEET DREAMS Barnutopia Glamping & Venue has made several enhancements to its beautiful facilities including new yurt accommodation. The owner, Katrina Boydon, tells us more: “Our biggest project did not start until late February. Storms forced a decision to replace our large canvas Mongolian yurt with a new wooden structure. We wanted to retain the essential yurt features and create a light, airy space in keeping with Barnutopia’s eclectic collection of wooden octayurts, cabins, stable and bunkhouse. We chose warm orange for the beams to add Barnutopia’s signature splash of colour. The first guests stayed in yurt Axana at the beginning of April and loved it. As with the original yurt, the new luxury glamping unit sleeps up to eight guests in a kingsize bed and two triple bunks – single over double beds. Couples may choose any unit for their wedding suite, but Axana is a favourite. All units at Barnutopia have real beds, linen, power, lights, heating and free Wi-Fi. The venue is located in the stunning Shropshire countryside on the Welsh border and yurt Axana looks out over rolling green fields.” To find out more, visit www.barnutopia.com

NEW VENUE ALERT!
CONGRATULATIONS! Based in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, hairdressing salon, BLACC + BLOND, are finalists at this year’s Salon Business Awards in the Green Salon of the Year category. Anil Salhan, the owner of the BLACC + BLOND salon, commented: “To win the Green Salon of the Year category at this year’s Salon Business Awards would be an incredible achievement. We launched our ‘Green is the new Blacc’ campaign on World Earth Day last year and since then, we have been continuously researching new avenues to become more environmentally friendly, with the aim to be one of the most sustainable hair salons in the UK. Winning this award would show that our efforts truly have not gone unnoticed and would help us shout further about what we do, with the hope that many other salons and businesses will follow and do their part to make the world a better place.” For more information, visit www.blaccandblond.com

LET THE LOVE BE-GIN The Shropshire Distillery is now able to transform its custom-built distillery into a hen or stag party destination, where visitors can have fun crafting their own gins. The gin can even be produced in miniature bottles as party favours for the big day. The distillery is run by husband-and-wife team, Emma and Gareth Glynn, whose shared love of gin was the inspiration to launch the business four years ago. Emma tells us: “Our gin school has been going strong since it opened last year. We’ve been inundated with happy gin students, and are proud to be rated five stars. We would love to start welcoming hen parties or stag dos, looking to do something memorable to celebrate the occasion. They will have exclusive access of the distillery where they will learn about the history of gin, and have fun creating their own spirits, whilst sampling some tasty tipples. There’s something really special about creating gin for one of the most important days of your lives. We store each recipe on file to be ordered again for future gifts and wedding anniversaries.” Head over to www.theshropshiredistillery.co.uk for more information.
Bennetts Willow Barn is a new wedding venue situated on a working dairy farm surrounded by grazing fields and a charming lake. The exterior boasts beautiful flowers throughout the year, picturesque log walls, fairylights, willow trees and a firepit. Outdoor ceremonies are very popular, but couples can choose to run the day how they want, holding ceremonies outside in the gardens, in the yurt marquee or barn. The 20m long yurt marquee is full of rustic charm. If couples hire the yurt marquee, they will have exclusive use of the adjacent gardens, including the firepit and outdoor space for garden games or even a bouncy castle. To celebrate the venue’s launch, the team at Bennetts Willow Barn will be hosting a wedding fair on 25th September, 2022. Couples are invited to come visit the space and see first-hand why it’s perfect for weddings. Check out www.bennettswillowbarn.co.uk for more information.

SARAH GALLIVAN ENJOYS A DAY OF LUXURY AT MODDERSHALL OAKS COUNTRY SPA RETREAT
S
et in 72 acres of private Staffordshire countryside, Moddershall Oaks Country Spa Retreat is a luxurious getaway that has it all. From its firstclass indoor and outdoor spa facilities and treatments, lakeside dining in the newly-refurbished restaurant and drinks overlooking the surrounding woodland, to its five-star boutique suites, on-site wellness centre and stunning spaces in which to tie the knot.
TIME OUT I went along with my mum to enjoy a Tranquillity Spa Day and to explore this gorgeous venue and we were in for a treat. We were greeted with a warm welcome by the friendly team and given a tour of the facilities. The outdoor spa area was my favourite, and we spent a lot of our day there! We started with a visit to the Kelo pine sauna, followed by a dip in the 25sqm vitality spa pool overlooking the surrounding countryside and sampled numerous coffees, hot chocolates and nibbles from the Deli huddled around the outdoor fireplace. On a warm day, the sun loungers would be perfect for catching the rays. It rained while we were there but the seating areas around the pool were undercover and with our fluffy robes, it made for a cosy experience. Indoors, the spa boasts a swimming pool, steam room, hydrotherapy pool, heated loungers, reflexology footbaths and an experience shower, all of which leave you feeling invigorated. For the ultimate time out, the tranquil Sleep Lounge is the place to be with its comfortable loungers and seating, no mobile phones allowed and mood lighting. As part of the spa day experience, we also had an Enlighten Signature 10
Massage – 50 minutes of pure bliss! If you’re feeling stressed in the runup to your day, you won’t be after this full body and scalp massage. A delicious two-course lunch was served in the newly-refurbished restaurant, The Oak House. We sat in a gorgeous booth, overlooking the lake and enjoyed the food on offer – featuring local produce the menus provide a modern take on classic dishes.
TIE THE KNOT Couples can book a spa day with their wedding party the day before the wedding and on the morning of the big day, you can hire the venue’s Blush Lounge for all your hair and make-up needs. What’s more, after saying ‘I do’, you can stay the night in a luxury suite and enjoy a day of pampering the following day as newlyweds. There are two options in which to host your day here, both accommodating 130 daytime guests and 175 for the evening. The lakeside wedding space is a favourite and comprises of an oak gazebo overlooking the lake, Astro-turfed seating areas and beautifully landscaped gardens. The indoor ceremony room is just as stunning, and because we can’t trust the good-old English weather, even if you choose an outdoor wedding, the indoor space is set up just in case of a lastminute downpour!
BOOK IT When you’re choosing your venue, the surroundings and facilities are the main things that you’ll consider, but I was so impressed with the level of service here too. The team all genuinely love what they do and it’s that that’ll make your day all the more special and memorable. Check out www.moddershalloaks.com to find out more and to book a tour.

ERASMUS DARWIN HOUSE, WS13 7AD
www.victoriagibbs.com
Nestled in Lichfield’s idyllic Cathedral Close, Erasmus Darwin House is an independent, accredited museum that was once the family home of doctor, inventor and published poet Erasmus Darwin. This stunning Grade I listed Georgian house is a stone’s throw away from Lichfield Cathedral and previously served as a residence for cathedral officials. When Darwin moved here in 1758, the building would have looked more like the timbered buildings that still surround it. Darwin added the fine façade and reoriented the house to face Beacon Street rather than into the Close. You can still see elements of the Medieval structure that developed into this home, such as the thick walls surrounding the cathedral. In 2009 refurbishment of the two main exhibition rooms took
place and again in 2013, major changes were made to the Inventions Room, bringing the thoughts and inventions from Erasmus Darwin’s fascinating Commonplace Book off the page. CELEBRATE IN STYLE Civil ceremonies usually last no more than 20 minutes, therefore rooms at Erasmus Darwin House are booked on a three-hourly basis with space for up to 30 guests. A combination of rooms can be used for the reception or couples can hire the townhouse exclusively for up to 40 friends and family. WE LOVE... REAL WEDDINGS
Step into spring
Rebecca and Huw had a seasonal wedding at Sandon Hall Images courtesy of Emily Robinson Photography
R
ebecca and Huw met during their first year of university. “On our first night out, I tried to buy Huw a drink and was very disappointed to find that he only wanted a Coke,” says Rebecca. “Needless to say, things went well and we’ve remained joined at the hip ever since. We were surprised to find that our families only lived 20 miles from each other and we had friends in common despite having never met! Huw’s sense of humour and charm had me hooked from the get-go. He very quickly became my best friend – he was always there when I needed him, he made me feel safe and he could always be relied upon to make me smile, even when I didn’t feel like it.” Huw asked Rebecca to be his wife during a trip to Swansea. “Huw asked if I fancied going away to York for a romantic weekend away,” shares the bride. “Annoyingly for Huw, who had a whole plan in his head about where we would go and how it would happen, I said that I didn’t feel like going to York and that I wanted to go to the beach. Huw then whisked me away to the Gower in Swansea – a special place for the two of us as it was where Huw’s family spent a lot of their time and where we had spent a weekend away five years prior. I thought that it was strange that Huw suggested taking badminton rackets and a rucksack down to the beach, which was unheard of as I’m the designated activity planner and bagcarrier in the relationship. I was non-the-wiser and counted my lucky stars that I could wander freely across the beach while Huw hid the ring inside the rucksack. It was there on the beach that Huw got down on one knee and asked the all-important question. After a lot of crying, I said yes!” Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day... 25
We wanted the whole theme to feel fresh and spring-like. The small personal touches were incredibly important to us as we wanted to give a nod to our local suppliers and guests. Sandon Hall was absolutely glorious! We had seen it over Zoom ,and when we were able to go see it in person, the weather was perfect and the venue just shone. From the beautiful historical features to the gorgeous grounds and the wonderfully helpful staff, we were absolutely blown away. Our centrepieces were glass vases filled with fresh flowers and numerous tealights. These were carefully placed around 19thcentury books that we purchased from a range of charity shops. I have a love and respect for reading and liked that we incorporated a little nod to this in the day.
My mum helped handmake the favours. They were personalised wine-glass charms with our guests’ initials engraved into them. My mum runs the most amazing eco-printing business, where she uses leaves and foliage to create gorgeous prints. She designed our invitations and order-of-service using flowers that belonged to my grandma, so it was personal and special to us.
Dean Sharpe’s Floral Studio provided our flowers. We wanted lots of fresh colours to symbolise the start of spring. We had alstroemeria, calla lillies, eustoma, gypsophila, lathyrus, delphiniums and stock. All of these were cream, lilac and sage. We also had lots of lovely eucalyptus and asparagus fern as foliage on the tables and down the staircase. 26
Emma’s Cake Design provided the most amazing cake. It was elegantly iced with an initialled middle tier. The flavours were red velvet, vanilla sponge and strawberry and prosecco.
REAL WEDDINGS
We felt incredibly excited on the morning of the wedding and I couldn’t wait to finally marry my best friend. Our favourite part was saying our vows to one another in the church. We also loved coming down the staircase in a shower of bubbles.
To keep our guests entertained, we had a wonderful band called the Jukebox Jets. They played 50s and 60s rock and roll and they had all of our guests dancing. For our reception, we created a playlist of our favourite love songs from the last 10 years.
We placed disposable cameras on each table. My mum also carefully placed some letters onto glass beads to create an anagram game for in-between the courses. A few packs were placed on each table and people were tasked with trying to unscramble the letters to create the word.
Huw chose navy blue tails with a silver waistcoat and a lilac cravat from Swarbricks.
I wore an Oleg Cassini dress from David’s Bridal. It was beautifully timeless and elegant, and I felt amazing in it. I accessorised with a gold bracelet from Huw and my grandmother’s pearl earrings.
The bridesmaids opted for simple lilac flowing dresses with angel sleeves from David’s Bridal. 27
Laura at Sandon Hall was an amazing support on our wedding day and throughout the planning process. She ensured that everything ran smoothly and nothing was too much trouble. I’d go back just to spend time with her because she was fab!
Emily Robinson Photography and Bowness Film were so professional and we felt like we were models on a shoot – not the awkward couple that doesn’t enjoy having their photos taken.
For our honeymoon, we went to the Maldives for 10 days and it was absolute perfection. We stayed in a water villa overlooking the ocean and got to look out at the crystal clear waters each morning. Who would draw the curtains in a place like that? We snorkelled, kayaked and sunbathed, drank piña coladas and watched the sunset on the beach every night.
Our best piece of advice for any couple about to tie the knot is to write a list of things for your bridesmaids and groomsmen to do. They would appreciate a heads up so that they’re prepared. Also, come up with a list of all of the people that you would like to have photographs with so your photographer is ready. Give this list to your maid-ofhonour/sibling so that they can help fetch people.

atherine and Chris met at school. “Chris is a year older, so we didn’t know each other, but we got talking on MSN and MySpace,” says Catherine. “We hit it off straight away due to our shared sense of humour and love of watching movies.” Chris popped the question during a holiday to Somerset. “We had always talked about getting married, and although we weren’t officially engaged, we had discussed 2022 as a potential date,” shares the bride. “I was at university until 2021, so we always talked about getting engaged after that. I was surprised when he popped the question during a holiday in 2020. We booked the trip for my birthday and spent the week in a lodge near the town of Wells. We went for a walk to Ebbor Gorge, and overlooking the beautiful scenery, Chris got down on one knee!”
SETTING THE SCENE “We wanted a venue that was both elegant and modern,” explains Catherine. “We love spa days and had not been to Moddershall Oaks Country Spa Retreat before but had heard it was excellent. When we visited the property, we thought it was stunning and the lake was breathtaking. We fell in love and decided to book it straight away.” The couple gave their guests scratch cards as favours. “We placed them in personalised holders from Etsy,” adds the bride. “We also had pick n mix sweets on the tables.” “All of the signs were from Mally’s Crafts,” reveals Catherine. “For the table numbers, Chris’ mum placed fairylights inside wine bottles.” Catherine and Chris opted for flowers from April Days Design. “We had white and blush pink roses with eucalyptus and other foliage,” recalls the bride. “We decorated the venue with pink napkins, fairylights, pink voile on the chairs and cake table, lanterns and a post box. The colour of the LED ceiling lights in the venue were personalised to match our theme. Our event planner helped us choose colours to match, and we had one setting for the day and one for the evening.” “We chose a two-tiered cake with white icing from Loren’s Cakes and Bakes,” says Catherine. “We opted for a cherry and almond and salted caramel filling and had an acyclic sign next to it with the flavours on.” The catering was provided by Moddershall Oaks Country Spa Retreat. “We had canapés during the drinks reception,” shares the bride. “We selected pork belly, tomato and goats cheese tartlets and mini cheeseburgers, which were a big hit with our friends and family. For the wedding breakfast, we had a three-course meal. We were allowed to give our guests two different options for each course.”
DRESSED TO IMPRESS “My dress was a Jennifer Wren gown from Katie’s Brides,” explains Catherine. “I fell in love with it on Pinterest and found where it was stocked. I always knew the kind of wedding dress I wanted, so I didn’t try on many different styles.” Chris wore a three-piece suit from Marc Darcy, which he bought through Suit Direct. “The suit was called Dion,” adds the bride. “Chris, the best man, his dad and my brother all wore the same. They had Marc Darcy ties in the same pink colour and pocket squares from JJ’s House, who supplied the bridesmaids’ dresses, so they were a perfect match. The girls’ gowns were an A-line floor-length chiffon design in dusky rose.”
TIME TO CELEBRATE “We hired a caricaturist, DJ and saxophone player,” recalls Catherine. “Everyone had a great time and especially enjoyed the caricaturist as it was something a bit different. We also had sparklers which we organised ourselves.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS “We were overjoyed with how the day turned out,” says the bride. “The weather was stunning, and we felt so lucky. Everything went even better than we imagined! Chris was really looking forward to the ceremony, whereas I was so nervous and felt relieved when it was finished. Chris was mostly nervous about the speeches and properly relaxed after that part.” The couple’s family and friends helped make their big day perfect. “Having my younger brother walk me down the aisle was one of my favourite moments,” shares Catherine. “Chris’ cousin, Steph, did a reading for us during the ceremony, and it was so beautiful. One of our friends, Roz, was also particularly helpful on the morning of the wedding and helped put me at ease.”
HONEYMOON “We went to Sri Lanka for two weeks,” explains the bride. “We planned it together, using an independent travel agent. The honeymoon was amazing, it was a jam-packed first week with long days of excursions, but the second week was slower paced with much needed relaxation. We met a few other couples on their honeymoon whilst we were there too! We would definitely recommend Sri Lanka as a honeymoon destination, especially if you enjoy wildlife, exploring and learning about different cultures.”
TOP TIPS “Our top planning tip would be to organise everything well in advance if you can,” reveals Catherine. “I did this, and honestly, I wasn’t stressed in the slightest in the weeks before the big day because I had already sorted everything. On the day, take a moment by yourself to soak it all in. See all of your hard work and planning come to life, watch your guests having a great time, take a look at your new husband/wife and see them enjoying the best day of their life and don’t forget to take a moment just the two of you!” 33

Danii and Andrzej celebrated their big day at Cider Mill Barns Images courtesy of Heather Rees Photography
D
anii and Andrzej met at their local pub. “I was working there at the time,” says Danii. “Andrzej often came in with his friends and we connected through that. He was going to travel around Canada soon after, so we thought there wouldn’t be a future, but we ended up speaking every day while he was abroad. He came back from travelling early, and the rest is history.” Andrzej proposed during a trip to a Christmas market in Bath. “We were on a walk when he asked, and it was perfect,” shares the bride. “We booked our wedding for May 2020, but due to one of the many lockdowns, it couldn’t go ahead. I decided I couldn’t just let the day pass by sitting inside moping around, so I organised a socially-distanced street gathering. The rules stated we couldn’t party, but we could be in our front gardens, so we decorated the street with bunting and invited our neighbours to set up chairs in their front gardens and join in the celebration. Our neighbour, Ian, is in a band and kindly offered to sing for us with his guitar and sound system. We had live music, a first dance in the middle of the road and many smiling faces to help us celebrate our love.” “We had moved the date to October and then again to May 2021,” explains Danii. “As the date approached, we could see that restrictions weren’t going to be open enough for us to have the wedding we wanted, so we decided to move the date again. However, I couldn’t go any longer without being married to Andrzej, so we decided to legally marry on 7th May. Our venue kindly opened up just for us that day, and we legally wed with our parents, my brother and our son Jacob. It was a short and simple ceremony, but it was magical. We had waited so long, and there was something so special about having no pressure from anyone around. Finally, wedding number three rolled around. It was the day before all the restrictions lifted, and the idea that I was missing out on being able to dance by only a few hours was hard to take. However, it turned out that the dancing wasn’t missed one bit. With the sunshine and heat, everyone wanted to be outside enjoying the weather and garden games, so everything worked out perfectly.” Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day... 37
We looked at various venue and knew we wanted something very light and airy. When we came across Cider Mill Barns, we spoke to the owner, Adrian, who was still in the process of building the space. We visited the site, which was only a shell at that stage, and saw the potential with what he was trying to create. We could sense his passion and attention to detail and knew it was the right property for us. It was a risk that was well worth it as it turned out beautifully, with every last detail carefully thought out and planned perfectly to fit around the events of our wedding day.
I really wanted a wild botanical theme, so our centrepieces went all the way down our three long tables. They were overflowing monstera leaves, ferns and other tropical leaves. We had large candelabras that also lined the centre of the tables.
I’m a graphic designer, so I created the table plan myself and had it professionally printed with a forest green background. This was then secured onto a gold grid and decorated with wild botanicals from our floris t.
Our florist, Wild Bunch Alcester, went to town with my request for wild tropical flowers and decorated the arches and signage with flowing greenery. With green and gold as the theme, there wasn’t much boldness in the colour scheme, so we decided to go bright with the bouquets, bringing in tropical blooms full of pinks and purples.
cake. It was decorated with Deborah Guest Cakes created our three-tiered ed with real botanicals finish buttercream, a personalised name topper, and flowing down. 38
As this was our fourth wedding date, I wanted a statement piece that was present in the ceremony and around the venue. Our stylist, White Violet, handmade a large fabric display stating ‘love always wins’ to help remind us that yes, it was a long stressful ride to get here, but it doesn’t matter because the love was and always will be there.

catering, and in the evening, we Cider Mill Barns did all of the wonderful by Butter Street Bakery. It was introduced a stall with large pretzels handmade el dipping sauces and was a huge complete with white chocolate and salted caram hit with our guests.
For the favours, I handmade clay name tags with painted gold details. These became joint place names and favours as they could be taken home and hung in the guests home or on their Christmas tree as a personalised decoration.
My dress was from the Beautiful collection by Enzoani. The bodice was coated in stitched pearls and beads, which contrasted with the plain skirt. We amended the skirt to have a glitter tulle layer which spark led in the sun. I was grateful for how light and airy the dress felt as it turne d out to be the hottest day of the year! I borrowed a hair accessory from one of my dear friends as my something borrowed and had a plain veil to help the dress shine.

Andrzej and the groomsmen chose grey fitted suits with forest green ties and floral pocket squares.
Andrzej’s cousin, Lucy, has a beautiful voice and kindly sang for our guests while photos were being taken and everyone mingled. It set the scene perfectly and was a nice touch having a family member involved. Due to restrictions, we weren’t allowed to have a live band or DJ in the evening. Instead, we had a selection of garden games such as sack racing, coconut shy, limbo and giant Jenga. It was a huge hit and people had a wonderful time getting involved.

I felt much calmer than expected, but I think that was because the legal part was already completed. We could just enjoy the celebration, knowing there was no chance of being stood up, because we were already married! Apart from feeling very warm, we were just so ridiculously happy that the day had finally arrived and that we could celebrate with all of our loved ones. After the past few years, it was clear that everyone needed to be together in a positive and wonderfully happy way, and we made up for the lost time.

our cake is a great way of tying together your chosen theme or colour scheme and is your chance to showcase your creative side. To help give you heaps of inspiration, we’ve asked local suppliers for their 2022 trend predictions.
“This year has seen weddings come back with a bang. With the backlog from 2020, couples have changed their minds on how they want to celebrate their day, and we see that in the cake sector as well. There are, of course, still the more traditional bakes being ordered, but many are also going for fun and creative designs.” – Samantha from Cake Fantastique.

“Some adventurous couples are ditching white cakes and going for bright pinks, blues or oranges, and fun flavours to match like mango and passionfruit, pink lemonade, or maybe a boozy flavour like gin and tonic with a coloured sponge.” – Samantha Strecker from Cake Fantastique.
❤ Chocolate can be used to decorate your bake. Whether you choose a modern drip effect or a quirky half-and-half creation, your guests are sure to be delighted. ❤ If cake isn’t your cup of tea, then there are some great alternatives available. We love the ohso-popular doughnut wall or tower. This can include a selection of your favourite flavours – plus there’s no need to worry about cutting the cake. Another option is a macaroon stack, this is ideal for those of you with a sweet tooth – yum! ❤ If you want to try something different on your big day, then why not look into purchasing some scones? These can be used as an alternative to your main bake or even as a delicious dessert. Make sure you do some research before purchasing, as some companies offer a variety of flavours, shapes, and gluten-free and dairy-free options. ❤ Cake toppers are a great opportunity for you and your hubby-to-be to show off your personalities – have some fun with it, and don’t be afraid to go against tradition! 43

“Couples are more thoughtful and are trying to reduce their carbon footprint. This means cakes are becoming more organic with dried and rustic flowers and leaves. We’re also seeing more botanical prints with artificial or dried flower combinations.” – Samantha from Cake Fantastique.
“The taste of the bake is just as important as the look of it! My latest popular flavours are mint chocolate sponge with chocolate buttercream.” – Claire from Claire’s Creative Bakes.

“Couples are making sure all packaging used is organic, biodegradable or reusable, and that every element of the wedding is earth-friendly, recycled or reused.” – Samantha from Cake Fantastique.
“I find clients like to make their wedding cake personal to them in one way or another. Some choose to add a native flower, a pet or even a hobby.” – Claire from Claire’s Creative Bakes.

OUR TOP TIPS

❤ If you’ve opted for a themed celebration, then try to incorporate aspects from it into your cake. It’s the perfect place to showcase your creativity and reflect your personalities. ❤ Cake freezes perfectly, so if you have any leftover and it wasn’t frozen previously (check with your supplier), freeze it and enjoy it for months to come. You could even keep some for your first anniversary. ❤ Do some research before setting a budget as some embellishments and flavours will cost more than others. ❤ Once you’ve found a supplier, work with them to create a bespoke design for your big day. Tell them about your likes and dislikes and show them photos of other creations that have caught your attention. Remember, a bespoke option will cost more than a standard design, so factor this into your budget.
“A flavour which I find is always popular is my version of a Bakewell tart. almond sponge with cherry preserve, flaked almonds and delicious icing.” – Claire from Claire’s Creative Bakes.

“Whatever you choose, it’s all about doing what you want and love, so enjoy it!” – Samantha from Cake Fantastique.
“I think 2023 will see more naked cakes but with dried flowers and pretty pastel, palms as decoration. Stencils can be so stunning and in my opinion not used enough.” – Claire from Claire’s Creative Bakes. OUR TOP TIPS ❤ For your evening food, why not opt for a crepe or waffle van? ❤ If you’ve decided against a traditional white bake, then ruffles are a fun alternative. Not only will it make the design stand out but it’s also a fun way of incorporating your theme. ❤ Flowers are a wonderful way of decorating your bake. Blooms can be carefully painted to look like a watercolour masterpiece, made using sugar or even sculpted out of icing. ❤ A marble effect looks sophisticated and is a great way of incorporating your chosen colour scheme. These fab bakes can be decorated using flowers or a variety of shapes that complement your favourite hues. EXPERT ADVICE
HOT TOPIC:
wedding worries Our experts solve your problems
SUMMER ROMANCE
What flowers and colours would you suggest for a summer wedding? We’re all happier in the summer when the sun is shining and the evenings are lighter, it’s when our gardens bounce to life with colour and interest, so why shouldn’t your wedding be the same? Bright vivid hues are easy to achieve with a beautiful mix of summer flowers. Why not be brave and mix a vibrant purple with a hot pink and yellow? Flowers such as dahlias are available in lots of shades and can be a good substitute for a rose if you prefer to step away from the more
traditional look. Astilbe adds interest and texture, while wax flowers, asters or lavender create a more wild look. Iris or delphinium can work well if you need to create height in your arrangements whilst still injecting interest. Never forget foliage, green is the colour of nature, so be it delicate grasses for a messy design or kentia for a tropical feel, just the right amount will help your flowers pop. Kristie McCullough www.sorelladecor.co.uk
FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD Several of our guests have dietary requirements, when should I tell our caterer? My daughter and I started growing fruit and veg during lockdown, which I then used to make jams and chutneys. These became very popular in my local community, so I started offering grazing boxes which included afternoon teas and cheese boards. This then led me to where I am today catering for wonderful events and weddings. As a small business that caters for large events, it’s extremely important to ask at the point of the order if there are any allergens or dietary requirement as using an item that someone has intolerances or allergies to could cost them their life or cause extremely complicated health implications. Ask your guests at your earliest convenience about any allergies/dietary requirements so you can pass them on to your cater to ensure they can accommodate any special requests. THE SOUND OF LOVE We’d love some live music at our drinks reception, but don’t want anything too intrusive as guests will want to chat and catch up. We’re considering a harpist, but what are the benefits? Having live background music at a drinks reception can really help set the atmosphere and put people at ease, so that they can feel relaxed while chatting to family and friends. Something non-intrusive and not too loud would allow for conversations to be enjoyed without having to raise voices. I have played the harp at many drinks receptions and found it to be the perfect instrument for setting the scene, while not drowning out normal exchanges between the guests. Amplification can be useful in some circumstances, and all of my harps have electric pick-ups, but unless the number of guests is above 100, I have seldom found it necessary. It’s worth considering the space you’re using and how many musicians can be accommodated. Obviously, a harp takes up less room than a group of instruments and can generally fit in a corner quite well. Outside drinks receptions can be really spectacular in the right setting, and once again the harp comes into its own. I have a lightweight carbonfibre harp which I can carry in one hand, making it ideal to easily pick up and move into whichever part of the garden you are using. It also has
MUSIC TO MY EARS My wife-to-be and I are thinking of booking our entertainment, but we’re a bit worried about hiring someone that we’ve never met. What are the benefits of going through an agency? Finding your dream wedding entertainment can be a tough job, especially if you’re feeling anxious about booking an act you’ve never heard live. It’s perfectly natural to feel like this, and it’s something that many couples experience. Booking though a reputable agency is one of the best decisions you’ll make throughout the entire wedding planning process. The musicians are top quality, whether you choose to book a rustic acoustic folk band, a modern dance band or a captivating classical musician, you can rest assured they’ll be of the highest calibre. At Entertainment Nation, all our acts have been vetted by industry experts and we only work with bands who have experience and talent in abundance, so you’re guaranteed a fabulous performance and a full dancefloor. Agencies are there to help you choose your band and help you throughout the entire booking process. There are no silly questions so ask away! One of the best reasons to book with a respected agency is that your booking is safe. You will receive a secure contract and a backup plan for any unforeseen circumstances, such as a band member being sick. An agency booking protects against these types of mishap, meaning you can relax and focus on enjoying your day. 48
the advantage of being impervious to sun or rain, so there will be no panics to run inside if a shower should appear. It’s sound is easily equal to that of my larger concert harps and carries well in an outdoor space. Repertoire on the harp and many instruments can be varied and tailored to the genre of music you desire. A wide selection of styles will ensure that every guest will hear music to suit their tastes at some point. When choosing an instrument, it’s worth considering access, drop off points and parking before booking to assist your proposed entertainer in deciding the logistics. The videos of each act are a true reflection of their performance and will give you a great idea of how the band will look and sound on your wedding day. If you’re still not convinced, read verified reviews from real couples on sites like Trustpilot, Facebook, and Google for an insight into what to expect. always hear about the bride struggling to find the perfect dress, and there’s so much pressure to get it right, but you never really hear the same for the groom-to-be. When we popped into our local suit store a few weeks ago, it surprised me when Dave said he felt stressed trying to make the right decision as he is usually very calm and collected. He tried on a few different styles and colours, but none left him feeling wowed or in his words: ‘like a suit I’m going to get married in’. He came away from that first appointment feeling confused about what to wear and, if anything, a bit deflated. We decided to leave it for a few weeks and then try again. This time we went to a different store that Dave’s brother had used for his wedding. We visited on a weekday, so it was very quiet, and the team gave Dave their undivided attention. Nothing was too much trouble and, within 30 minutes, Dave had found the perfect suit and was grinning from ear to ear. The team helped reassure him about what style suits his shape and what would look good with our sage green colour scheme. He opted for a three-piece blue suit with a grey waistcoat, brown shoes and a sage green tie and pocket square. As Dave wanted to stand out on the day, we hired the same suit but with a blue waistcoat for the groomsmen and our dads to wear. We’re going back soon to get everyone else fitted, and I’m excited to see them all together on the day.
READY, SET, FILM! We were unsure throughout the planning process if we were going to book a
videographer mainly due to our budget. Dave wasn’t keen on the idea after seeing a few highlight films and with a lot of expense at the time, we decided to leave it. So it surprised me when a few weeks ago Dave said he wanted to book one. He’d seen a friend’s recent wedding video and liked the idea of being able to watch the day back. I’m pleased we decided to go for it, and luckily the supplier that we wanted still had availability. We’ve opted for a half-day package, which includes the ceremony, drinks reception and speeches. Although I would have loved to have had everyone getting ready and our first dance on film, it just made more sense for us financially to go for the smaller package. I’m really excited to see how it will turn out and be able to get all our friends and family around to watch it after the wedding. Check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing my dress alternations, hair and make-up trial and last-minute planning.

can’t believe that this is the penultimate bride’s diary before I walk down the aisle. It’s so strange knowing that in just a few months I will become Mrs Cullen. I know a few of my married friends have chosen to keep their maiden name or hyphenate but for me, taking Dave’s last name was really important. My parents have been together for more than 30 years, but never married. I always hated having a different last name to my mum; so it might sound silly, but I like the idea of our family having one name and I’m really looking forward to sharing that with him (also Twilight is secretly one of my guility pleasures – so the 15-year-old in me is excited to be taking on the Cullen name). In this issue, read all about Dave trying to find the perfect suit and our search for a last-minute videographer.

BRIDE’S DIARY Here are our top tips that we’ve learned during wedding planning:
VENUE
CATERING
❤ Check if you’re allowed confetti. We’re only allowed real petals, and bio-degradable versions aren’t an option. ❤ Find out if you can have sparklers as some venues don’t allow them. ❤ Check whether there are any local taxi companies in the area. If so, pass along the details to your guests.
❤ Ask your supplier if cutlery and linen are included in your quote. ❤ Make sure your supplier caters for all dietary requirements. ❤ Before booking, find out how many options you get to pick for each course.
PHOTOGRAPHER
JEWELLERY
❤ Talk to your photographer about visiting the property before the wedding. We’re planning to meet ours at the venue so he can see where the best photograph opportunities are. ❤ Find out how long your online gallery will be active for. ❤ If you’re feeling anxious near the wedding, get in touch with your photographer. They’ll be able to talk through the day with you to help calm your nerves.
❤ Think about the details on your dress before buying your jewellery. If your gown is heavily beaded, it might be worth choosing simple, understated options. ❤ It can be overwhelming trying to decide what to wear. Talk through options with your wedding party to see what other people suggest. ❤ Pick out key elements of your dress and see if you can complement them with your jewellery.
ALTERNATIONS
CAKE
❤ Before booking your alternations, it’s worth shopping around. I sent ❤ Work out how many guests you’re going to be having and tell your a picture of my dress to five different companies and explained what I cake maker. They will be able to advise how many tiers you need to wanted done, and made my decision based on their quotes. accommodate everyone. ❤ Depending on how intricate your dress is, alterations can take ❤ A lot of cake will be leftover at the end of the night, so purchase cake anywhere from two to eight weeks, so make sure you book your boxes so your guests can take a slice home. appointment early. ❤ Order a sample box so you can try different flavours before making ❤ If you’re nervous about your first fitting, ask one of your bridal party to your final decision. go with you. 55

he team behind this styled shoot wanted to create something big, bright and bold. “We wanted the photos to be fun and colourful with a touch of elegance,” says organiser Sarah Day from One Day Film Productions. “We began planning in December, 2021, starting with key contacts: Annabel Sarah Bridal and Anthony Hall Photography. We quickly found a venue stylist, White Violet, and exchanged thoughts on how we could bring together all our ideas. I wanted to find start-up companies in the local area, like myself, who were starting their wedding business journey or needed a stronger social media presence. The teamwork shown in this group of suppliers has been astounding. We gelled well together, and I’m super proud of how it all came together to produce such
amazing results.” The models, Hannah and Russ, are a real couple. “Their big day was supposed to be in 2020, but it was postponed due to Covid,” shares Sarah. “After getting their hopes up one too many times, they decided to tie the knot in a registry office and hoped to have their party at another time. However, circumstances changed, and they never managed to have their big day. When the opportunity arose to be the models for this styled shoot, they jumped at the chance so that they could say their vows and get some photos of themselves in wedding attire. Although this is a styled shoot, there was a real love story behind it, and it’s safe to say that we all treated the day like it was a real wedding, with the utmost care and focus.” 57

Using mineral UV filters that act like a mirror, it protects against the force of UV radiation and prevents light-induced skin ageing. This daytime companion is water resistant too and boasts a rich texture to gently pamper. £34, available at www.drhauschka.co.uk

Revolutionary U.S. skincare brand goodhabit has recently launched in the UK with a range of products that have effective, naturederived ingredients at their core. Each is created with the same goal of achieving radiant, glowing, healthy skin every day. The best news is you’ll never find microbeads, nonoparticles, parabens or phthalates in goodhabit’s formulas or any harmful ingredients at all for that matter. I love Clean Scene Micellar Gel. A rinse-free gel it whisks away both waterproof and long-wearing formulas as well as dirt, excess oil and impurities without stripping your skin of essential moisture. Gentle enough to use on your entire face, even eyes and lips, it’s also powerful enough to deliver a clean finish in a single swipe. £24, www.goodhabitskin.com 65

THICK AND UNRULY Viva La Moisture Shampoo (£19.99), www.salon64products.co.uk “This shampoo uses only natural, cruelty-free ingredients to help hydrate tired locks. Finding a product that works for me is quite a challenge, but after a few uses, I noticed that my stubborn mane didn’t feel as knotted and looked healthier. I’ve even received a few compliments since using it.” – Melissa Barker

DRY WITH SPLIT ENDS Christophe Robin Regenerating Mask with Prickly Pear Oil (£50), and Christophe Robin Regenerating Shampoo with Prickly Pear Oil (£31), www.christopherobin.co.uk “This regenerating duo, infused with prickly pear oil, smells fantastic. After just one use, the nourishing formulas have transformed my hair, leaving behind a shiny finish with less frizz – hallelujah! FINE HAIR LACKING VOLUME Grow Gorgeous Volume Duo (£27), www.growgorgeous.co.uk “After rinsing the products out, my hair was left intensely soft and smooth, and instantly felt like it had more body, even when soaking wet – the Grow Gorgeous Volume Conditioner is the detangler my dreams are made of! I was careful to take my time blow drying, section by section with a barrel brush and was amazed to see that my lifeless, flat hair looked double the thickness and had a bounce to it. I genuinely cannot wait to continue using.” – Beth Morton 66

DRY AND DAMAGED Naturecan CBD Infused Coconut Shampoo (£16.99) and Conditioner (£16.99), https://uk.naturecan.com “I won’t lie, I’m a bit dubious about products containing CBD as I’ve tried moisturisers with it and honestly can’t tell the difference. However, this shampoo and conditioner surpassed my expectations tenfold. It left my dry and damaged hair looking healthy and glossy after just one wash. I actually said ‘oh my gosh look at my hair!’ as I swished it like I was in a TV advert, and the coconut scent is divine! Tip: you really do have to ‘thoroughly’ massage it into your hair and scalp as directed to get it to lather up.” – Danielle Harvey

Q&A Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best
TREND SETTER What are the latest make-up trends? In the world of bridal make-up, the only true trend is a natural and glowing appearance, which has stayed true over many years. A bride will always want to look and feel like a more special version of herself. I believe a bride should enhance her natural features as well as staying true to herself. You want to look back on your wedding photographs and still love your make-up, so it needs to be elegant, classy and timeless. Product choice is down to your skin type and the overall look that you want to achieve. The skin is the canvas on which your artist will create a radiant look, so taking care of it in the run-up to the wedding is imperative. Remember, more skincare equals less make-up. Georgia Round www.georgiaroundmakeupartist.com
DRESSED TO IMPRESS What should my hubby-to-be expect from his first suit appointment? Ideally, your hubby-to-be will book an appointment one or two months before the wedding. Each designer has different options when it comes to fit and style, so those few months will give you plenty of time to find the perfect suit. Our suits are off-the-rack, which means they are already made, however after choosing a style, we can make small adjustments to the waist, leg, and sleeves if needed. Find a specialist who can offer advice and spend time with your partner going through all the options to help find him a perfectly-fitted suit for your big day. SOUTH AFRICA
Mantis, a conservation-focused hospitality group with luxury properties located across the globe, has announced the opening of the Founders Railway Carriage at Mantis Founders Lodge in South Africa. Originally built in the 1970s, the carriage is permanently stationed at the top of a hill within Mantis’ private concession. Ideal for honeymoons, the railway carriage features indoor and outdoor dining, lounge areas, and an expansive deck with a private swimming pool. The newly-built Honeymoon Pod was designed to be an escape for couples. Perched above the central lodge, the suite offers unobstructed views of the valley. Romantic services can be arranged including intimate dinners for two and picnics overlooking the waterhole with amazing game drives to view the big five. The railway carriage belongs to conservation pioneer and Mantis founder and chairman, Adrian Gardiner, who tells us: “In 1990 I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to buy a train carriage which I converted into a first-class coach, and I managed to come to an agreement with the railways which enabled me to attach the carriage to the regular passenger services. It has long been my dream to bring the carriage to its very own station. Now others can enjoy it and create their very own personalised holiday adventures for generations to come while experiencing the excitement of sleeping on board a railway carriage.” To find out more, visit www.mantiscollection.com

A romantic escape Travel editor Melissa Barker reveals why Mauritius is the perfect honeymoon destination
A
fter being stuck in the UK for what feels like a lifetime, I’m sure that I’m not alone in saying that I’d forgotten how exciting travelling could be. I was apprehensive about flying again, but the moment I stepped off the plane in tropical Mauritius and the heat hit me, I felt at ease. Whether you’re after rest and relaxation to recover from the stress of wedding planning or an action-packed adventure, Beachcomber has a resort to suit. With eight properties in Mauritius, each offering something different, the team can tailor-make your holiday across a range of price points. I was lucky enough to visit four of the luxurious hotels during my stay and it was certainly a trip to remember! For those of you who don’t know much about Mauritius, it’s located in the Indian Ocean and is brimming with culture and Instagram-worthy snaps at every turn. Roughly an 11-hour flight from the UK with Air Mauritius, it’s famous for its picturesque beaches, breathtaking lagoons and crystal-clear reefs. The spoken language is English and Mauritian Creole, so you won’t need to worry about translations, and it’s the only known habitat for the now-extinct dodo bird. VICTORIA BEACHCOMBER RESORT & SPA The four-star Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa is situated on the North West coast and is conveniently located between the tourist hub of Grand Baie and the capital city of Port Louis. The sea-facing rooms offer the perfect space to begin your stay in style, with king-sized beds, balconies, walk-in showers, fluffy towels, complimentary toiletries and luxurious baths. Those who want to celebrate married life in privacy can book into the adult-only ‘Victoria for 2’ section. Tranquil and romantic, this area is ideal for those who want to relax in each other’s company while enjoying the on-site amenities.

With access to Mont Choisy Le Golf, an 18-hole golf course located 10 minutes away from the resort, a host of water sports, pools and five restaurants, there’s plenty to see and do during your time here. TROU AUX BICHES BEACHCOMBER The five-star Trou aux Biches Beachcomber is situated on the coast with nearly two kilometres of white sandy beaches and a turquoise lagoon. The villas and beachfront suites have private pools that are built in crescents to create a village-like feel. The villas open out onto large pools, which look glorious first thing in the morning, and the outdoor showers are pure bliss! The resort has large pools in each of the main areas, and with the sea only ever a few minutes away, it’s easy to feel relaxed and stressfree here. With an emphasis on environmental preservation, all the Beachcomber properties are eco-friendly and use environmentally-friendly bottles, reuse water and some have on-site beehives to produce honey. DINAROBIN BEACHCOMBER GOLF RESORT & SPA AND PARADIS BEACHCOMBER GOLF RESORT & SPA Dinarobin Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa is a gem for those wanting to get away from it all. This five-star hotel is in the South-West part of the island and shares facilities with Paradis Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa. WINE AND DINE When I think of the food and drink in Mauritius, I immediately think of rum. This tipple is used in several drinks and traditional dishes on the island. One of the most popular is Ti Punch, a rum cocktail that has a real kick to it, especially if you’re a lightweight like me! The Beachcomber properties have a range of restaurants, each serving different cuisines. Nautil Café at Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa has a large lunch menu accomodating even the fussiest of eaters, while Trou aux Biches Beachcomber has six restaurants offering different cuisines from Asia to Mediterranean. At the Mahiya restaurant, you’ll have the opportunity to wear traditional Indian clothes and watch the chef work through the glass window before tasting the delicious Indian cuisine. Finally, Paradis Beachcomber has an incredible seafood restaurant called Marlin. With options to suit all dietary requirements, the staff will go above and beyond to ensure you have everything you need, and the food is amazing – I’m still thinking about the iced nougat weeks later, delish! EXPLORING THE ISLAND There are lots of fun and interesting places to visit while on your honeymoon with Mautourco. The local market at Port Louis is a great way of seeing how the locals live and what produce is on offer. You can grab some souvenirs for the family and help support the community in the process. The Rhumerie de Chamarel is a rum distillery surrounded by tropical gardens that look gorgeous even in the rain. The restaurant is a must-try, especially the rum baba – a soft dessert, almost like a doughnut, that’s been soaked in rum. Take part in a fascinating tour followed by a tasting with all the drinks available to purchase in the gift shop. If you’re heading down South, take the time to visit Chamarel Falls. It’s the highest waterfall in Mauritius, and there are tortoises, monkeys and more natural wonders nearby.

REST AND RELAXATION The spas at the Beachcomber properties are superb and offer treatments ideal for post-vows R&R. The signature massage includes a sugarcane scrub, which helps remove any dead cells and leaves your skin feeling soft and like new. You can do this together before enjoying a back, leg and neck massage. One of the stand out things that Beachcomber offer is yoga by the beach. A great way to relax and rejuvenate, the teachers are very knowledgeable and will show you breathing techniques and stretches to help with your day-to-day lives when you finally return home. FUN IN THE SUN The activities available across the Beachcomber properties are ideal for those who want to learn a skill or try something new. The expert team will be able to accommodate all abilities and help you try water skiing, windsurfing, sailing, snorkelling, pedal boats, tennis or wakeboarding. As part of the honeymoon package, you’ll receive champagne or sparkling wine in your room and a choice of one Beachcomber experience, such as a massage, a boat cruise, wine tasting, a cooking class, horseback riding or an introduction to scuba diving. I’d recommend the sunset boat cruise, where you enjoy a glass of bubbly while taking in the coastal sights at the most beautiful and romantic time of day. HONEYMOON BLISS If you’re looking for an adventure, a relaxing beach stay or a familymoon, Mauritius is the perfect destination. There’s plenty to see and do around the island, and the Beachcomber resorts will leave you feeling like royalty. I truly loved my time in Mauritius, so much so I don’t think my hubby-to-be will need much convincing to consider our own honeymoon there! Escape to
the forest
Sarah Gallivan discovers the great outdoors at Nottinghamshire’s Sherwood Hideaway
E
xperience a luxury escape in the heart of Sherwood Forest at The Sherwood Hideaway at Thorseby. Surrounded by woodland, this selection of luxury lodges and log cabins is an oasis of calm. I stayed with my husband, our two children and dog and it was the perfect opportunity to reconnect after leaving the hustle and bustle of daily life behind us – upon arrival I felt instantly relaxed. Choose to explore and enjoy the range of activities on offer or simply kick back and relax, the choice is yours. CHOOSE YOUR HIDEAWAY With a choice of traditional, rustic and woodland lodges, one, two or three bedrooms and the option of taking your furry friend along to a pet-friendly lodge, there’s something for everyone. We stayed in a Rustic Pet-Friendly lodge and it was gorgeous. Indoors it boasted stylish interiors, modern fixtures and fittings and a cosy log-burner effect fire. We were greeted with a much-welcomed bottle of wine, locally produced fine chocolates and a selection of treats for the pooch – even he didn’t miss out! Outdoors, there’s the added bonus of a private hot tub, barbeque area and decking area looking out into the forest and the lodges are well laid out allowing for ample external space and privacy.

HONEYMOONS
DISCOVER AND EXPLORE Cycling – Take your bikes to explore more of the Thorseby Estate, Sherwood Forest and surrounding areas. Trails are well marked out along road and dirt tracks and they suit all abilities. What’s more, each lodge has its own cycle rack so your bikes can be easily stored. Walking – We took a walk through the estate to Thorseby Hall, the Grade I listed 19th-century country house. The tree-lined paths were easy to follow, and my son and daughter loved delving deep into the woods. The walk took 45 minutes at a steady pace and the coffee and cake in the Thorseby Courtyard, children’s woodland play area and military museum was well worth the stroll.
TIE THE KNOT You can reserve these luxury lodges as accommodation for nuptials at nearby venues or if you’d love a woodland wedding, The Sherwood Hideaway can provide a marquee in which to host your day.
Fishing – If fishing’s your thing, Sherwood Hideaway guests have access to a private members-only fly-fishing lake, approximately 1 mile from the retreat. Falconry – Walk through the woods with the birds of prey or have them visiting the lodge on your own decking area, book a birthday package or take part in a Falconry Day where you’ll learn how to fly and handle hawks, falcons, owls and eagles, as they glide through the treetops. Relaxing – Thorsby Hall Spa is on your doorstep. With its fully equipped gym, indoor pool with jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and range of innovative treatments, why not go and indulge?
