oes anyone else feel like they’ve been on a rollercoaster ride over the past year? From lockdowns and restrictions to WFH and Zoom calls – these are all things we have learned to adapt to. Throw wedding planning into the mix, and it’s incredible that we’ve made it through! What has been a silver lining for me in these utterly bonkers times is seeing how the Yorkshire wedding industry has taken everything the pandemic has thrown at it in its stride. Tales of companies diversifying, volunteering and sending homemade presents to their couples have put such a smile on my face and make me proud to support our local wedding superstars. If you want to sing from the rooftops about how wonderful your big-day suppliers have been throughout date changes, postponements and last-minute micro-weddings, then we’d love to hear from you. In this issue, we aim to help you get that to-do list ticked off, with top tips from local experts in our Hot Topic feature (page 74), our round-up of the best urban wedding venues (page 19) and some serious gown inspiration (page 58) courtesy of our fashion editor, Claire Ridley.

Fairytale venue Bolton Castle has been named as Best of Britain Wedding Venue 2020, as voted for by its couples. “Every couple’s wedding at Bolton Castle is bespoke,” general manager Jacqueline Naylor says. “We work hard to ensure their day is the wedding of their dreams. The venue is brilliant for winter weddings, with fire pits, candlelight and evergreen table decorations making the castle absolutely breathtaking. Summer offers exceptional views across the valley from our very own maze, and the castle bathed in sunlight is such a beautiful backdrop. Every wedding is special to us, and we’re grateful to our couples for nominating the venue.” This hidden gem in the Wensleydale valley offers delicious locally sourced menus and a service worthy of its historic royal connections. To find out more about this memorable setting, visit www.boltoncastle.co.uk

NEW VENUE ALERT! Set to open in April 2021, Carlton Manor is a bespoke wedding venue in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Recently acquired by Nic Marshall and Simon Spinks, it will be completely overhauled and rebranded into a stunning multi-use site. With the help of Yorkshire interior designers Matthew Mee Limited, the £2million renovation will transform the venue into a stylish destination for weddings and domestic travel, with the design promising to complement its stunning East Yorkshire location. After the pandemic, a huge wedding boom is expected for late 2021 and 2022, and the private-hire Carlton Manor will help handle the demand and reward patient couples with their long-awaited dream day. Plans for the site include a magnificent master tipi (150 guests) and a charming eight-room manor house, with a secluded two-bedroom hideaway. Why not extend celebrations with a staycation in the ten luxury accommodation pods? Nic Marshall says, “I am incredibly proud and excited to launch Carlton Manor and start welcoming couples from spring – providing it is safe to do so and government guidelines permit. It will be a creative canvas for couples to put their stamp on and make the place their own.” Check out https://experiencecarltonmanor.co.uk

We caught up with the lovely Katherine Armstrong Bisson of florist Fleur Adamo to find out how she’s been helping to-be-weds throughout the pandemic. “Getting married in these difficult times continues to be a rollercoaster,” Katherine says. “Finding understanding suppliers is a huge part of keeping your emotions (and finances!) together. Since last spring I have shared frustration, anger and tears with my couples, but also relief, joy and a huge sense of satisfaction when intimate weddings have gone ahead – showing that love conquers all.” “Working closely with couples is a privilege,” Katherine continues. “Smaller weddings give us the chance to add more to the day to reflect you as a couple. This could be including jewellery in your bouquet to remember someone who can’t be there or being able to dress the venue yourself using flowers, vases and props that I provide.” One of Katherine’s couples, Lizzie and Adam, finally got married in autumn, after the stresses of having to postpone and reorganise. “With a shared vision and the determination of both the couple and the suppliers, it was a beautiful heart-warming day filled with love and happiness,” Katherine says. GO AL FRESCO We’re loving the new woodland ceremony area at Low Osgoodby Grange in North Yorkshire. Perfect for those who want a day with a difference, the space has been licensed by the local council ready for 2021, for ceremonies with up to 200 friends and family. “The newly erected pagoda nestled in the woodland is extremely versatile and allows you to create your dream day,” Holly Fawcett of the venue explains. “We can either help create that dream, or offer you our blank canvas to use as you wish.” Head to the website to find out more www.lowosgoodbygrangeeventsvenue.com

A LITTLE ROMANCE Venues and suppliers up and down the country are adapting their offering to fit our ‘new normal’, including Westfield Farm Weddings at Grand Get-Togethers. “We have redecorated and enhanced our facilities for micro-weddings,” says owner Molly Coombs. “We were lucky enough to host a couple of intimate weddings in 2020, and following the pandemic, they’re definitely here to stay. Smaller weddings are both personal and beautiful and we love everything about them.” The licensed venue is the ideal location for an intimate celebration, and its now offering a low-season and midweek micro-wedding package for up to 30 guests, available for weekends from November to March and midweek all year round. “The package is here to stay and we look forward to welcoming many more couples with their nearest and dearest,” Molly says. A YORKSHIRE STAYCATION

www.victoriabakerweddings.co.uk

The rise of the staycation has been a silver lining of the pandemic – especially as Yorkshire is such an incredible location to explore. Yorkshire Hideaways has just launched as the newest county to join the Hideaways Holiday group. The sixth regional brand in the group, it places an importance on local knowledge and will be based in Leyburn. There is a gorgeous range of accommodation available, from cosy cottages, dog-friendly options, a castle, a lighthouse and even a property on the Castle Howard estate, which is furnished with items from the stately home. “After a somewhat challenging year, we’re eager to see what 2021 will hold and we’re thrilled to start on a positive footing,” managing director James Boyce says. “We’ve sourced not only an exemplary collection of properties but also an equally brilliant team who bring a wealth of unbeatable local knowledge. FLORAL FABULOUS While so many weddings were being put on hold, florist Vanessa Wellock of Wildflowers made the most of her extra time to develop her skills and range of products. Firstly, she took her level three teaching certificate at Craven College before securing a role teaching there. She also now offers one-day courses for those who wish to improve their skills in flower arranging. What’s more, Vanessa has added some gorgeous new products to the Wildflowers website, which are perfect for microweddings and postponements. “I have added a faux flower section,” Vanessa explains. “Couples can find faux bouquets, headdresses and arrangements all available to order and ready for whenever your big day takes place. We also offer dried hydrangea wreaths and hearts – perfect for dressing your venue.” Look out for the company’s new range of scented candles too! Check out https://wildflowersuk.co.uk 10

REAL WEDDINGS

hen Briony and Mark first met through mutual friends, sparks flew immediately. “We instantly clicked,” Briony said. “I knew I’d be with him forever. It felt like we’d known each other for years and he soon became my best friend.” So it was no surprise that one day Mark would be planning to pop the question. “For years we’ve gone on holiday to Cornwall with our beloved cocker spaniel, Charlie,” Briony tells us. “2017 was no different, and we set off with our two good friends, Hayley and James.” When they arrived, Mark explained that he had booked a lovely dinner at Lewennick Lodge in Newquay. After the meal, he asked Briony to join him on the balcony, which looks out across the ocean and an amazing sunset. “I refused to go out because it was too cold,” Briony laughs. “So a disgruntled Mark said he was off to take the dog to the toilet in a nearby field.” He soon rang Briony to ask her to bring him a poo bag. “Naturally, this wound me up. What sort of dog owner doesn’t take a poo bag out with them?” Briony says. “I marched across the car park, and when I got there he gave me an envelope. Inside was the most thoughtful love letter.” Luckily, her friend had arrived at this point, and after peering over Briony’s shoulder and seeing the letter she frantically got her camera out, just in time to capture the moment Mark got down on one knee. “We all cried and squealed with excitement,” Briony says. “I couldn’t believe it!” Back at home, the pair set the date for 30th May, 2019. We caught up with Briony to get the lowdown on how they planned their dream day at Wharfedale Grange…

THE PERFECT SETTING As soon as the couple stepped foot in Wharfedale Grange, they knew it was exactly the luxurious barn feel they were looking for. “The venue was breathtaking and every single detail had been thought of,” Briony says. “The North Barn, which was filled with hundreds of twinkling fairylights, had an intimate feel for our ceremony, while the South Barn was brimming with luxurious touches, from the bespoke wooden tables and crystal chandeliers to the huge rose gold mirror ball.” The wedding planners, Claire and Zach, even created a bespoke gin bar for the day, and the bottomless prosecco tap in the ladies’ bathroom was a winner!

PUTTING THEIR STAMP ON Briony and Mark knew from the beginning that they wanted a classic, luxury feel with neutral tones accented with gold and silver touches. “We wanted our flowers to be very natural in colour, with lots of creams and greenery in a loose style,” Briony explains. “My bouquet was made up of peonies, hydrangeas and David Austin roses, complete with eucalyptus and herbs. On the tables were urns filled with cream flowers and greenery spilling out, alongside candlesticks and tea lights. Over the top table hung a beautiful floral installation. We also kept a family tradition of having small corsages for every lady at the wedding, which were handmade by my mum.” There were lots of lovely personal touches throughout, as friends and family helped make the day extra special. “My uncle is a talented chef, and he kindly handmade fudge and personalised it with our names and wedding date for the favours,” Briony says. “One of my best friends made all of our wedding stationery for us, my aunty created a beautiful doughnut tower and Mark and I created a sweet table for the kids.” There was also a special table with photographs of the 25

couple’s grandparents who were no longer with them and one of their beloved cocker spaniels, Barney. The pair chose a four-tier white iced cake; the natural look and pretty fresh flowers fit with the day perfectly. Inside was delicious sponge cake in raspberry and vanilla, red velvet, lemon and passionfruit and coconut. To make sure they arrived in style, two matching cream wedding carriages transported Briony and her party from her mum’s house, where they got ready, to the venue. Mark and his groomsmen all met in the bridal room at Wharfedale Grange, where the venue laid on a delicious breakfast for them.

REAL WEDDINGS

LOOKING THE PART Briony went on a girls’ day out with her mum, aunty and cousins to try on dresses and get an idea of what style would suit her. “I had no intention of getting my dress that day,” she says. “I thought I wanted a fitted, boho style, but when I tried on my ballgown I knew it was the one. The structured bodice and sleeves gave me the classic feel I wanted, whereas the tulle skirt and soft colour were not at all what I thought I’d go for!” Her style was completed with a classic-glam make-up look and gorgeous locks with plenty of volume. Briony’s bridesmaids looked stunning in silver embroidered dresses from ChiChi London. Mark had his suit tailor made at Moss Bros, and opted for a navy skinny-fit three-piece suit with a subtle check, finished with a champagnecoloured lining with the couple’s wedding date embroidered on it.

IT’S A CELEBRATION The couple aren’t huge party animals, so it was a relaxed vibe they were going for. “Guests could design their own cocktails from the bespoke gin bar,” Briony says. “To set the scene we had a string quartet; I entered to Secrets by Dallas String Quartet and we left to Beyoncé’s Halo. They also performed at our drinks reception.” The evening reception kicked off with the newlyweds’ first dance to Hold My Girl by George Ezra, complete with a confetti canon! “It was a moment we’ll never forget,” Briony says. “We were under the amazing mirror ball while confetti poured down over us.” Jonny Ross Music then provided the entertainment with a saxophonist and DJ.

ON REFLECTION The couple are so happy that they have some amazing photos to look back on for years to come. “The photographs were one of the most important aspects of our wedding planning,” Briony tells us. “Hayley Baxter is so talented and managed to capture everything perfectly. From the moment she arrived to when she left we felt at ease, and I truly believe this is why our photographs are so beautiful.” The couple also invested in videographer Jason Lynch to capture the day. “We wanted the film to look cinematic, and that’s exactly what we got. Jason and his colleague shot everything so naturally, a lot of guests didn’t even notice them filming!” The day was not without its nerves. “I could barely eat my breakfast,” Briony says. “As soon as I was waiting to walk down the aisle my nerves just disappeared and I was so excited to be getting married to Mark. He was the opposite, he wasn’t anxious at all in the run-up to the day, but admitted when he was waiting at the end of the aisle his heart was pounding. When I appeared, he said it took his breath away and he got really emotional; it was such a lovely moment.” So what did the newlyweds take away from their perfect wedding? “Our whole day was so special,” Briony says. “It was like being in a dream and we never wanted it to end. We will never forget it and we’re so lucky we got to share it with our closest family and friends.”

BRIONY’S TOP TIP: “Stick to the vision you’ve always had and you’ll create the most special day of your life.” 27 27

hen Jenny and Stuart met at work, their relationship developed in the most natural way. “I wasn’t looking to meet anyone,” Jenny says. “However, I soon found myself looking forward to work and seeing Stuart. We had endless conversations and made each other laugh. It all developed from there.” When Stuart decided it was time to pop the question, he knew the best place to do it. “We were on a Christmas trip to New

York,” Jenny says. “He got down on one knee in front of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree; it was 6am and the crowds hadn’t started to form. Christmas is my favourite time of year so it was perfect.” Back in the UK, the pair got planning their dream day for 26th May, 2019, and chose the stunning setting of Raven Hall Country House Hotel in Ravenscar. IN THE

REAL WEDDINGS

nick of time Jessica and Alex pulled out all the stops and planned their intimate micro-wedding in just 24 hours Images courtesy of Charlotte Elizabeth Photography

I

t was Alex’s ginger hair and the fact he was wearing a kilt in one of his pictures that made Jessica swipe right on Tinder. “He says I was wooed by his conversational skills on our first date,” Jessica laughs. “He says he was attracted to my smile and confidence. We had a lot in common, and he helped me start long-distance running.” The pair had decided that they wanted to get engaged, but Alex was the one to pick the moment to pop the question. “He proposed after we’d finished our first

marathon in York,” Jessica tells us. “It was very romantic but neither of us could really walk or move post-marathon!” The couple planned their big day at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, but the government announcement that the country would be going into lockdown meant planning went into overdrive. They brought the wedding forward to 3rd November, 2020, and had to prepare in just 24 hours. Jessica tells us how they did it… 37 37

We chose Yorkshire Sculpture Park because it’s so beautiful and fairly local to where we live. It has gorgeous grounds and views – and they said our dog could come to the ceremony!

We decided to have a meal for our 15 guests at Quirky Corner in Meltham after the ceremony, which was allowed at the time as we were in tier two. It was where Alex and I had our second date, and the owner kindly agreed to open the restaurant especially for us. It’s a family-run business and they were so lovely; the food was amazing and we had the place to ourselves. 38

After the lockdown announcement, we felt really demoralised, with just a week to go to our big day. Then, we realised we could move it forward. We found out we could go ahead at 4.30pm on the Monday and we got married at 4pm on the Tuesday!

REAL WEDDINGS

The florist managed to get everything together so quickly for us and we were so grateful – at first she didn’t think she could do it! I had a stunning bouquet and we had buttonholes made along with a lovely flower collar for our dog. It was very important to us that she was part of the day.

I found my dress in Bridal Factory Outlet, Northallerton. I didn’t know what I wanted when I started looking, but after trying lots of different styles I found one that I fell in love with. I teamed it with a veil and my mum’s bracelet.

Alex wore a kilt; he’d been meaning to get his own for a while and this seemed like the perfect opportunity. It took him so long to get into it that he was nearly late!

I’m a teacher, and because cover was so stretched at school I didn’t want to take the full day off. My hairdresser managed to fit me in at 7am, I was working by 8.30am and left at lunchtime to get my make-up done. My mum runs a post office and luckily one of her customer’s daughters is a make-up artist and she managed to fit me in! Looking back at the photos, I’m so glad I could get it all done.

My great auntie is a registrar, so she was an invaluable source of help. If anything, it all coming together so quickly made it even more special. How many couples can say they planned their wedding in 24 hours? 39

JESS’ TOP TIP: “Ask anyone you know for help; people will surprise you and you’ll receive help from the most unexpected places!”

Our original photographer couldn’t make the date, so mum got on the case and thankfully found Charlotte Elizabeth Photography. Everything came together beautifully and we’re so grateful to all our suppliers for being so flexible and jumping in to save the day!

If you want to get married, and you’re fortunate enough to be able to do it with the people who matter the most around you, then just do it. At the end of the day, it’s a celebration of your love, and that is special no matter how many people are there to witness it

mma Pearson of Ambience Venue Styling chose Yorkshire Wedding Barn as the backdrop for this super-stylish collaborative shoot. “I wanted to create a look with statement pops of colour,” Emma tells us. “We went for coral as the accent shade. This was seen in the linen and florals, making a bold statement against the

The navy tones contrasted brilliantly against the coral and really highlighted the gold elements.” Throw in some cool geometric shapes, neon signs and a talented team of local suppliers experimenting with the latest styles, and you’ve got a whole load of inspiration for the modern couple! 43 

hen Charlotte Kaye of Charlotte Elizabeth Photography visited Standedge Tunnel & Visitor Centre, it stood out in her mind as a unique and stunning venue. She knew it was the perfect setting for a styled shoot that she had in the pipeline with local wedding experts Bijou Bridal Boutique and Nicola Whitfield MUA. “Standedge Tunnel has lots of outdoor space,” Charlotte tells us. “I wanted to create a rustic look with a palette of greens and whites to mirror this, and to show off the separate ceremony and reception spaces. We even got to use one of the canal boats that carry couples to the venue!” Enjoy!

No need for needles! CLEAN AND CLEAR

We all know about the barrage of environmental abuse our facial skin battles on a daily basis, but what about our scalps? They too are faced with the impact of sweat, pollution, and various styling products. Centred creative director Kieran Tudor says, “Good scalp health is crucial for strong, healthy, beautiful hair, yet it’s often overlooked when it comes to hair care regimes.” A deeply nourishing blend of olive, argan and hemp oils, Centred En-Root Scalp Treatment replenishes moisture to dry brittle hair, while exfoliating the scalp and removing product build up and dead skin cells. What’s more, the blend of rosemary and peppermint essential oils stimulates blood flow to the hair follicles maximising hair growth potential. Priced at £36 from www.wearecentred.com

Self-tanning fave Skinny Tan has unveiled its latest product – Notox Beauty Elixir. It’s a smoothing, plumping facial serum specifically formulated to supply your skin with instant anti-aging effects and a glowing gradual selftan. So, say “no” to Botox, and “yes” to Notox! Getting Zoom-ready and embracing the minimal make-up look has never been easier. Notox Beauty Elixir is available at www.skinnytan.co.uk, priced at £19.99.

F

amed for her flawless skin, popular TV personality Jess Wright is a busy, gogetting woman. Whether she’s on a shoot, busy filming, hosting her podcast – Girls #NoFilter, planning next year’s wedding to William Lee-Kemp, or hard at work in her role as Crystal Clear’s first celebrity ambassador, her perfect skin is the envy of all. Keen to know her secret, CWM beauty editor Kelly Andrews sat down for a chat with the reality star to get the lowdown, just for you! Jess, thanks for making time in your hectic schedule to talk to us and huge congratulations on your forthcoming wedding. How do you imagine your big day? Thank you! I imagine it to be beautiful, full of love and hopefully classy. As long as I’m surrounded by my family and loved ones, that’s the most important thing. How did William propose? He did it on the balcony of our beautiful hotel room in the mountains in Courchevel. It was both spectacular and amazing. What’s your vision for your bridal beauty look? Good skin is the perfect base so I’ll be prepping with some fab Crystal Clear COMCIT facials in the run up to the big day for sure. Then I’ll want my make-up to be slightly natural, with that dewy glow and some wispy lashes.

Absolutely

FLAWLESS

Our beauty editor caught up with Jess Wright to discuss wedding plans and just how she achieves that perfect complexion

70

Do you have a picture of your dream dress in mind? I’ve tried on so many dresses, but I definitely have a vision. I think I’ve chosen the one. Completely understand you playing the cards close to your chest there! We look forward to the surprise. As the voice of experience, can you share with us your top wedding planning tips? I’d say, make sure you have a good wedding planner. Also, do the guest list, but don’t send the invitations out until later, as it’ll definitely alter as time goes on! So many couples have been forced to re-plan their weddings as a result of the pandemic. Have you encountered any such difficulties and do you have any advice for other couples facing the same challenges? We’ve considered moving the wedding, but

BEAUTY INTERVIEW

at the minute it’s a day-by-day update, so we’re going to make the final decision in the spring. If you’re not time restricted, I’d say move yours to 2022 if possible, so you can really enjoy the process rather than struggling through the pandemic. Leading a jam-packed celebrity lifestyle while planning a wedding must make you an extremely busy lady! How do you juggle it all while still looking fabulous and flawless? I love keeping busy, so I was really excited about planning a wedding on top of my already hectic lifestyle, but unfortunately

that hasn’t happened as the pandemic and various lockdowns have slowed me down. It has meant though that I’ve had plenty of time on my hands to plan the wedding! What are your make-up bag must haves? I love Chanel foundation for a quick matte bronze. Also, a good eyebrow pencil and a nourishing lip balm. I always keep the Crystal Clear Beach Glow Tanning Drops in my kit too. They’re amazing for adding a subtle glow to your skin and you can dial it up depending on the depth of colour you’re looking for. Tell us why you love Crystal Clear. I’m so excited to be chosen as the first ever ambassador for Crystal Clear Skincare. Their products are my holy grail and having tried so many different brands over the years, I just love the results you get with Crystal Clear, so it’s amazing to be working with the brand. The range is extensive with something to suit all skin types and concerns. The Ionic Sonic2 Microdermabrasion Kit is my ultimate secret to Insta-ready, super-cleansed skin. I’m also a big fan of the salon treatments, especially the COMCIT facial. It really is the most fantastic treatment for softer, firmer and hydrated skin.

Which is your favourite product from the range? I’d have to say The Lifting Wand, one of the brand’s beauty tools. It comes with its pharma-grade product, which is packed with hyaluronic acid. You use it for 60 seconds every day and it gives you deep hydration, depuffs eyes, plumps skin and lifts it. It’s really easy to use and fits into your daily routine. For a quick skin fix, I’d also highly recommend the 10 Minute Glow Mask, which literally does what it says on the tin and gives you glowing skin in just 10 minutes. It’s incredibly satisfying to peel off as well! What’s your number one beauty tip for brides? Focus on your skin. Glowing skin is the best thing on your wedding day in terms of beauty, so do whatever you need to make it feel its best. Finally, what’s next for you? Hopefully my wedding! Also, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, the musical I’m in. This is all dependant on the pandemic though. Sending my love to everyone at this time. Q&A

Our local pros answer your questions

Bohemian by Nicola Anne

As I’ve not been able to visit any boutiques yet, can you tell me what new trends and looks I should be looking out for? It’s been a tough year thanks to the pandemic, and in many cases it’s been hard for some bridal retailers to choose their new collections in time for the post-festive influx of newly engaged brides. However, with magazines like Your Yorkshire Wedding going digital, as well as various other online platforms, we’ve had the opportunity to view the latest styles that would have been hitting the catwalks at the biggest trade shows. Our thirst for all things wedding has been quenched! Sleeves are making a huge comeback. From floaty chiffon detachable styles to fitted lace on illusion tulle, we have the sleevelovers covered. The new 2021 Whimsical Beauty collection from Nicola Anne features gorgeous detachable sleeves on some of its gowns – perfect for those brides who want to have a different look from day to night in the cooler months. We’re arranging to have this British-made collection in the boutique as soon as possible after reopening – get in touch to find out more. SPRING FORWARD How do I get a fresh, dewy beauty look for my spring wedding? Preparation is key here. It may sound obvious, but in the lead-up to your day, drink as much water as possible. Use a hydrating face mask two to three times a week, and look for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, which is superhydrating, and vitamin C for brightening the complexion. If possible, I would go lightweight for the base; it’s not always necessary to have full-on foundation. Some CC creams and tinted moisturisers give enough coverage as well as looking less heavy on the skin. Team this with radiance fluid, a little translucent powder and concealer. Finish your base with a subtle highlighter on the high points of the face to create that dewy feel. For a spring wedding, I would opt for a soft, bright lip; something that provides a pop of colour, perhaps to match your bouquet. For your eyes, opt for neutral shades with long lashes. Complete the look with blush in soft coral or pink on the cheeks.

Finishing Touch Flawless Dermaplane Glo, £19.99 Available at Argos, ASDA, Boots, Tesco and Wilko Dermaplaning as a salon treatment has been around for a while, and quite frankly the very thought of it has always terrified me. So, I wasn’t too sure what to expect of this tool. I did my research on the benefits, genned up on this super-useful tutorial and I was ready to go. Wow, I don’t know what I was so worried about. It was easy to do and took no more than five to 10 minutes. Probably 10 for me as I got a bit addicted and couldn’t stop – I don’t recommend that though. It’s an incredibly satisfying process seeing all of that peach fuzz and dead skin disappear. I couldn’t believe how smooth my skin felt afterwards. Leave your skin to rest for around eight hours afterwards before you apply any skin products or make-up as it’s quite an intense exfoliation process, then repeat every two to four weeks. I can’t wait to see how regular use improves my skin further. I’m definitely sold on dermaplaning!

https://youtu.be/S2b5jX4yNyA

Kevyn Aucoin Kaleidochrome All-Over Highlight Palette, £39 www.lookfantastic.com This multi-tasking palette offers four shades of highlight suitable whatever the look you’re going for. I particularly loved the darker rose Space Party, which I used on my cheeks over my blusher for a radiant glow and Super Cosmic, which I added to the arch of my eyebrows and very top of my cheekbones. It really brought a multi-dimensional look to my make-up that can be tailored for day or night.

Eve Lom Radiance Transforming Mask, £65 www.spacenk.com

TRIED AND TESTED

I was surprised to find a balm texture when I first removed the lid, so was interested to see how this would go. Using the supplied spatula to remove the required amount of mask from the tub, I opted for generous dollop and began to massage it into my face as instructed. Its thick formula felt incredibly luxurious and I could already tell it was going to provide a pampering experience. I was particularly delighted by the advice to leave for a minimum of 30 minutes, which gave me an excuse to relax for a decent amount of time – none of this 10 minutes rubbish! When it was time to remove with warm water, I was delighted to find my skin looking renewed, beautifully supple and glowing.

PUT A SPRING IN YOUR STEP CWM’s beauty editor puts this season’s best buys to the test creating a head-to-toe makeover session you’ll love

Sculpted by Aimee Connolly Lip Duo, £18 www.sculptedbyaimee.com I’m a huge advocate for lip liners and their myriad benefits, but I do struggle to know which shade goes with which lipstick, find the two become separated and will admit to resenting buying both in the first place. So, these Lip Duos are a blessing! Not only are they perfectly colour matched offering you two products for the average price of one, but if your make-up bag is already packed, like mine, they offer a smart solution. I tried Mauve Match, which is a versatile neutral shade, ideal for everyday wear.

No Secrets One Body Jelly, £49 www.nosecretsbeauty.com This jellied body oil smells absolutely incredible with No Secrets’ signature blend of essential oils – bergamot, juniper, petitgrain, eucalyptus and lavender. Less messy than a traditional body oil, you just need to massage a little in at a time for smooth and beautifully soft skin. Plus, the amazing fragrance lasts. Perfect for a pamper.

Margaret Dabbs Cracked Heel Treatment, £18 www.margaretdabbs.co.uk Let me start by confessing that my heels are horrendous, always cracked and dry and nothing I try makes a difference. Until now that is. This product was well and truly put through its paces by my horrible hooves and the results were instant. After just one application the sandpaper effect was gone and with continued use it really is a miracle worker. It’s my new beauty essential, and I can’t wait to get the flip flops on! 73

BURST WITH JOY!

Q We want to have a huge wedding celebration when the pandemic is over. How can we dress our venue to create a real party feel? You will have waited for what seems like a lifetime for your wedding, and you’ll want to give your loved ones an unforgettable occasion. Stunning balloon decor is a really cost-effective way to dress your venue and wow your guests. Ballon art isn’t all about kids’ parties and balloon animals. I promise all my couples that the creations will

still be floating and enchanting guests by midnight – my balloons are always the last ones at the party! I love meeting wedding couples at my workshop where you can see my latest designs and we can discuss how to make your day extra special. SMALL BUT PERFECTLY FORMED

Q We’ve had to downsize our wedding, but we still want a showstopping cake. Help! Small wedding cakes can still look amazing; it’s all about the way you dress them and how you display them. Go for large flowers on plain, soft-coloured cakes to create impact or bright and bold colours work brilliantly on tall slim cakes with a statement topper. Adding a touch of sparkle is a foolproof trick to catch the eye. Consider where you will display your cake. Try not to put it in a corner, but choose a central location with plenty of natural light or a spotlight for a more dramatic effect. A cake stand will add height and grandeur, and make sure the table isn’t too big as this can swamp a smaller cake. Finally, don’t over-decorate it – less is more! Q We’re having a relaxed marquee wedding. What catering should we choose to suit this? What better way to enjoy your wedding breakfast than with a sharing picnic in the comfort of your marquee? THE MUSIC OF LOVE

Q How do we achieve a classic feel for our music in the day, but still get the party started in the evening? This really depends on your tastes as a couple, but try to balance this with what your guests will enjoy. For instance, you might be into heavy metal but this might not get all your loved ones on the dancefloor! Try to strike a happy compromise with what everyone will enjoy. During the day, it’s wise to book a performer that isn’t too obtrusive so that guests can chat and mingle. Consider a violinist or acoustic guitar – something light but upbeat. Retreat to ty the ci

Hannah Faulder visits The Marylebone, and finds out that it offers the best of both worlds for a minimoon in the capital

A

s the country prepared for Lockdown Part II, my husband and I managed to sneak in a last-minute escape to the city to enjoy a much-needed retreat at The Marylebone. Nestled in the hotel’s supertrendy namesake neighbourhood, between the Georgian Welbeck Street and the partpedestrianised Marylebone Lane, you’re just a short walk from London’s most famous Monopoly locations, from Bond Street to Mayfair. Stepping out for a stroll from the hotel, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re in a bustling Cotswolds village – that is until you happen upon Oxford Street. But this is what makes it such a wonderful destination for a minimoon or post-wedding break: it’s close to the action, but it provides a tranquil retreat from it too.

STAY Cross the threshold, and you’ll find a neutral palette offsets the pops of colour and modern paintings on the walls perfectly. Look carefully, and you’ll notice a subtle design scheme reflecting the four seasons as you walk through the hotel. Following an extensive refurbishment, the striking decor extends throughout, and no luxurious touch has been spared. Classic timber flooring, marble-topped counters and wood panelling blend seamlessly with curated artwork and designer furniture. There’s a

whole host of event spaces too for weddings and celebrations with real character; I particularly loved the verdant Palm Room and the sociable al fresco terraces. Our corner suite was chic and fresh, its spacious circular layout houses a small kitchen area, complete with Nespresso machine, a sumptuous living area, dining table and huge marshmallowy bed. “We could live here,” my husband and I kept saying to each other. We sat, champagne in hand, and gazed out of the window over the pretty streets of Marylebone with the city lights glittering in the distance; it had a distinct Mary Poppins vibe. The striking marble bathroom boasted a huge bath, walk-in shower and trendy Malin+Goetz toiletries. The welcome pack with COVIDsafe goodies like hand sanitiser was gratefully received, and the hotel clearly states all the measures it has taken to look after guests’ wellbeing. Looking to really treat yourself and your loved one? The super-stylish Marylebone Suite has a showstopping cedar-clad terrace, with a retractable roof, awesome vistas and an outdoor TV and fireplace – it’s certainly memorable! While you’re here, why not treat yourself to some R&R in the Third Space Health Club, with its gym and 18m pool.

EAT We dragged ourselves away from the champagne and fluffy robes long enough to enjoy the hotel’s restaurant, 108 Brasserie. This is not a typical hotel restaurant, more a fabulous eatery for locals and tourists alike

that just happens to be attached. Set on the cobbles of Marylebone Lane, the outdoor seating with patio heaters makes it look so inviting. Inside, you’ll find traditional style with a modern edge, from rich upholstery and parquet flooring to antique mirrors and decadent florals. The meals on the globally inspired menu feature fresh ingredients with a focus on seasonality. Yummy burrata, salads and decadent desserts were the order of the day, making the restaurant a mustvisit for guests.

EXPLORE The next morning, we treated ourselves to a full English breakfast (one vegetarian) in bed, with hearty portions served under silver cloches, before heading out on foot to explore the neighbourhood. This soon turned into a wonderful day strolling through the nearby Royal Parks, spotting parrots and pelicans before ducking into a café for a takeaway coffee as we meandered up The Mall to take in Buckingham Palace. Next up was a stroll through Hyde Park and into the shopping mecca that is Oxford Street before heading back for a quiet drink at the hotel’s bar – perfection! If you don’t get the best weather, though, the capital’s attractions are within easy reach on public transport – or you could just hunker down in your room and luxuriate in your newly wedded bliss.
