Tadcaster hat shop Simply Devine is celebrating in style. Liz DevineWright has taken the overall titles of Specialist Wedding Supplier of the Year and Wedding Boutique & Accessories Supplier of the Year in the English Wedding Awards 2022. Liz collected her two trophies at a ceremony held in the Mercure Piccadilly Manchester Hotel. This is the fourth win for Liz at the English Wedding Awards, as she took the overall titles after winning the Yorkshire regional heats, beating competition from suppliers from the north east and north west. She has previously won a number of the awards at the events in recent years, but this year’s final came on the anniversary of the opening of her Simply Devine shop 18 years ago. Liz explains, “It’s double celebrations for us this week after what has been a very difficult two years for all of us servicing the wedding industry. Government regulations forcing us to close, and heavy restrictions on wedding guest numbers, coupled with race meeting closures has severely impacted our business and the hospitality and wedding industries. Fortunately, we’ve come through this and are celebrating our win and our milestone of completing 18 years in business.” For further information about the shop visit: https://simplydevine.co.uk

WIN FOR SIMPLY DEVINE
In 2018, florist Karon Breckon decided to focus on weddings. Karon explains, “I’d been inspired when I attended a Wedding Business Retreat with Tallulah Rose Flower School down in Bath. I was completely smitten by the style and ethos of the teaching. I was also introduced to British flowers and a more sustainable way of creating flower designs. I love this style of floristry design. And so Meadows and Mulberry Weddings was born.” During the intervening time, 2018 to 2021, Karon has learned her craft, taken part in workshops, created wedding flowers with British flowers at every opportunity as well as get involved in wedding shoots to further enhance her skill set, adopting a more eco-friendly method of creating flowers, avoiding single use plastic. Karon continues, “As a result of this drive to be a wedding florist, I’ve become busier and busier with weddings. And so this year the decision to close my flower shop in Sheffield made absolute sense and focus solely on my wedding couples. “I now have the flexibility to be able to take on weddings throughout Yorkshire and the surrounding counties. Already I’m creating weddings in Northumberland, as well as north Yorkshire whilst my base is still in Sheffield. This will change at the end of 2022. I will be moving my business to north Yorkshire due to relocation. So 2022 has lots in store!” We wish Karon lots of luck with her venture. Weddings really are a lovely area to work in. The landscaped gardens present numerous photo opportunities: the lake, fountain, tempietto, rose colonnade and Italian statues positioned either side of a sweeping grass lawn. TIME TO CELEBRATE Couples can choose to marry inside the Orangery or outside beneath
the Tempietto in the gardens. the capacity depends on the other elements of the day and how the Orangery and gardens will be used. All Saints’ Settrington Church sits alongside the venue so some couples choose to marry there first and walk over to the Orangery. Drinks receptions take place on the terrace of the Orangery and inside depending on the weather. Capacity for drinks reception, dining, and dancing inside the Orangery without a marquee or having to drop any tables during the day is 160 guests. WE LOVE… The Orangery offers a free wedding planning service. Your dedicated wedding planner will meet with you to get all your ideas down on paper, offer their experienced advice and together formulate your itinerary.

Magical MOMENTS REAL WEDDINGS

R
ose and Fin met via mutual friends whilst at York University back in 2013. Having purchased their first home and even adopted Figaro their pet cat, in 2019, Rose had that feeling that a proposal was on the cards. Rose remembers, “Fin had planned a day of my favourite activities for the two of us. Immediately, I was a little suspicious as I’m normally the organiser, but we went to Leeds for a day of crazy golf, bowling, and video games. Before we went out that evening for an Italian that Fin had also booked, I was sitting in our lounge minding my own business and to my surprise Fin proceeded to get down on
one knee! Just before he proposed with the ring, he also gave me a present, a watch, which had engraved ‘Marry me?’ on the strap – a special touch as Fin is an avid watch collector. Knowing I’d hate a public proposal, this was perfect as we could celebrate with pizza and prosecco that evening.” Wedding planning commenced and the couple said ‘I do’ on 21st August, 2021 at St James Church, Norton, with a reception at Whirlowbrook Hall. Here, Rose tells us more about their day…

It really is true when they say that the moment you see your partner at the end of the aisle, any nerves will go away. The date itself had an extra special meaning too since it was also 67 years to the day that my late grandparents tied the knot.
By night, Fin had put on a surprise and hired a saxophonist for two hours to play alongside songs from our DJ which really livened the atmosphere.
For every birthday since the age of 10, my dad would write me a poem in my card which would usually describe the events of the past year. On our wedding day, my dad included a poem as part of his speech which I wasn’t expecting. I thought this was very thoughtful and something I’ll always look back on with fond memories.
We decided to have dance lessons ahead of our first dance. We chose Baby I’m Yours – a nod to Sheffield with the Arctic Mon keys track but we also loved the meaning of the song and the style.

REAL WEDDINGS
N
o one could have predicted how Tabs and Nick’s first date would have started out seeing as she was supposed to be being set up with someone else! Not hitting it off with her date, Tabs asked to swap seats discreetly with her best friend, Eve, after the meal and ended up sitting next to Nick − the rest is history! Tabs tells us, “Nick’s intelligence was one of the things I was most attracted to along with his sense of humour and how unbelievably kind he is. Nick was most attracted to my sense of humour – you can’t take yourself too seriously!” Nick bought the ring back in 2019 on the day that Tabs’s fiveyear-old nephew Ben was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Tabs explains, “He said to himself he wouldn’t propose until Ben was better and thanks to God, after an op to remove it and a year of chemo and radiotherapy, I got a ring but better still Ben got to ring the bell!” In September 2020, Nick got down on one knee in one of their favourite London haunts and a year later, on 18th September, 2021 they tied the knot at Birdsall House.
SETTING THE SCENE “Birdsall House is just perfection!” Tabs gushes. “There are not many stately homes that have been in the same family for centuries and so steeped in history. Positioned in an unspoilt part of north Yorkshire it’s incredibly private but with so much space to play around with. Plus, owners Cara and James have created the perfect family home so it feels incredibly personal and truly relaxed.” It was also important for the couple to be married in a church and with St. Marys on the grounds of the estate it was an obvious choice. As a nod to the pair’s memories of living in London, they chose a classic white taxi to transport them from the church to the grounds. “It seemed a bit ridiculous having a car to drive me five minutes from the house to the church and back again but as we left the church the driver suggested going for a 10-minute drive to allow everyone to get back to the house and for us to catch our breath. My goodness – what an incredible drive that was. Just us as newly married husband and wife – with a glass of fizz in hand! We drove through my parents’ village and everyone at the pub was waving and cheering. Such a lovely moment!” Food was a part of the day the newlyweds wanted to be remembered. “Tom Coe at Coe Catering comes highly recommended not just from the Birdsall team but across north Yorkshire. We really wanted a dish we had in Provence as a starter which was gazpacho with basil sorbet – simple flavours but delicious! Often you go to a wedding and the food isn’t memorable but so many people have spoken about the food after saying how amazing it was. The next day I noticed that two friends even text me during the meal with a picture of their fillet steak saying how incredible it was! “We all know that after an hour or two of dancing, people get hungry so we had Knead and Feed pizza guys come and serve unlimited pizza until the early hours. It was so good I had a cold slice the next morning! “We weren’t going to do favours but then I went on gardening leave between jobs and found I had some time on my hands. Nick and I love going out for food and drinks so we created a mini Good Pub Guide – from the Three Chimneys in Skye to The Wiverton Bell in North Norfolk – we covered the breadth of the UK. Our tables were named after the pubs featured in our wedding favours and were held up by a wine cork to carry on the theme.” The table was finished off with a fantastic bowl of flowers spilling out over the table from florist, Lucy and her amazing team, along with some tall tapered candles. 33

REAL WEDDINGS LOOKING THE PART Being a lady that knows exactly what she wants, Tabs tried on one dress and one dress only. She explains, “I’ve always known what I like and what I don’t. I’m proud to say that I get that from my mum. I suppose being a bride in my mid ’30s I know myself and my body. I’m a size 16-18 and one thing I’d love to see change is the sample sizes − why should I have to squeeze myself into a size 10? Surely, they should have two sample sizes, a 10 and maybe a 16? I also bought an embellished dress from Never Fully Dressed which I changed in to for the partying teamed with a pair of Veja trainers and my classic red Nars lippy. Nothing was going to stop me from dancing all night!” When it came to the men it was a resounding answer: “Tails all day long! Men look so utterly handsome in tails and it’s so rare they get to wear them!” Nick was kitted out at Ede and Ravenscroft for his outfit, which matched the bridesmaids and had some beautiful diamond Asprey cufflinks gifted to him by his Mum for his 18th birthday. The three best men also wore tails.
TIME TO CELEBRATE During the wedding reception the newlyweds had chosen Kate Lister and her partner Alex Hill (both of Foo Birds) to perform whilst the guests sipped champagne in the sunshine. “Her voice is like caramel and they sang some fantastic soul, jazz and pop songs.” Tabs continues, “Then in the evening we had Flynn and Tonics who totally got the party started, they even let me perform an impromptu version of Say You’ll Be There by the Spice Girls. Once they had finished their set they then DJ’d for us. Our first dance was I’ve got you Babe by Etta James.”
MEMORABLE MOMENTS “I felt incredibly relaxed and ready to get down the aisle!” Tabs remembers.“ I suppose having dated for a decade and being older, we knew what we were doing. I also naturally love being centre of attention so I suppose this was a perfect day for me! Nick was incredibly cool, calm and collected. “My Dad is a Bishop and we asked him to take the service. It made it unbelievably personal from the vows to the address, he just smashed it. Dad also took me down the aisle, which meant changing from his Father of the Bride frock coat to his cassock during the first hymn. Luckily my brother-in-law, sister and friend were doing the music so we just had to have another chorus at the end to give him time to get back from the vestry! It was a right family affair and everyone said how special it felt.”
TABS’S TOP TIPS: “Keep your guests in mind – don’t let the initial drinks reception go on too long leaving people standing around and I truly believe you should go for quality over quantity even if that means inviting less people!” 35

REAL WEDDINGS
A family unit

M
ichelle and Matt have been together for 17 years! Too busy having fun, travelling and building a home together, marriage wasn’t a priority. However, that changed once their youngest daughter, Lauren was born in 2014 and the idea of becoming a family unit and sharing the Vosper surname became so appealing. On Michelle’s 40th birthday, Matt proposed. Pregnant with their second daughter, Fern, Michelle excitedly accepted and wedding planning commenced! Having been postponed once due to Covid, Matt and Michelle finally said their vows on 23rd October, 2021 at The Arches, Dean Clough Mill, Halifax.
39
We loved The Arches from the minute we walked in on one of their wedding open days. The canopy of lights in the venue just brings it to life.
For favours, we did personalised Mr & Mrs Vosper sparklers which the guests lit for a sparkler arch outside in the evening. The campervan photobooth gave our guests – especially our younger guests three hours of true creative fun!
Mutedowl did all our wedding stationery for the day – a black wire grid with some simple foliage. The black and white popped brilliantly against the floral styling on the day.
Three Little Birds Bakery made our cake in a semi-naked style with macaroons. 40
Emma the Florist is just amazing. Her and her partner Giles were foraging the week leading up to the wedding, the tree branches in the large windows created such gorgeous shadows in the low autumnal light.
REAL WEDDINGS
Stacy from Smithy’s Events provided a children’s games area including gnome toss, hoopla and beat the buzzer – we had seen this set up at an open day for The Arches. The space allowed a dedicated area especially for our younger guests.
Sian, our wedding planner also offered childcare. She was brilliant! She did a combination of on-the-day planning which took the pressure off me in the weeks up to wedding and met with me in advance to help Fern, my youngest, get to know her and help me relax on the day.
Matts grandad’s war suitcase was turned into a gift card box, with a photo of him and his army friends on show – he was a brilliant photographer and this was his role in the army – it was a nice family touch.
Mark the Head Chef for The Arches is brilliant, there’s a wide range of menu options to choose from or you can create your own suggestions. The evening food option was also really popular – mini dishes which people could just accept standing whilst enjoying the evening reception. Matt was so impressed with Joshua Adams Menswear, Cleckheaton, and after a couple of trips had picked himself a gorgeous Marc Jacobs suit in grey with a faint rust check. He chose a black waistcoat, different to the groomsmen, and a rust tie.
I chose the Octovia gown from designer Rebecca Ingram with the detachable train. We bought the dress from The Bridal Boutique Baildon – again wanting to keep as many suppliers local to where we live as it’s a fantastic village. 41
I loved the autumnal mix match look from the start of my Instagram trawl of wedding looks. I had three adult bridesmaids – one wearing cream, one in chianti red and one in rust orange. Our two daughters wore matching flower girl dresses.
We had Ash Francis booked throughout the day. He’s an acoustic singer and guitarist – he played pre-ceremony, ceremony, the reception session as well as our first dance – You’ve got the Love by the Florence and Machine.
During the wedding reception, we booked Mark Waddington, an upclose magician. Mark moved around all the long banqueting tables as we enjoyed our wedding breakfast.
MICHELLE’S TOP TIP! It will all come together as you hope and plan, so try to enjoy the process and most definitely enjoy the day – take a moment just you and your partner to look around and smile at having those you care for with you.
I’m very chatty and confident talking in front of people and had been winding Matt up that I wanted to say something during the speeches, when really Lauren had been practicing a lovely reading, We Want to be your Penguin, at school. She read it perfectly to Matt – it was our way of saying we would always be together as a family. Matt loved it!

S
hoot coordinator Eleanor Jayne Makeup Artistry organised this outdoor shoot at the stunning Kirkham Abbey. Ellie tells us, “I had the idea for the shoot after having enquiries from couples getting married in the winter. Many couples opt to get married in the warmer months, but there are so many opportunities to inject personality and creativity into a winter wedding. I knew I wanted the shoot outside, and early in the morning in order to capture the atmosphere created by the morning light, fog and frost.” Ellie chose Kirkham Priory as it has a beautiful bridge and the River Derwent running alongside. Ellie adds, “Zoe at Treasured Brides was so kind to work with us. At the fitting with our model Alina, I was immediately drawn to the long-sleeved Daniela Di Marino dress from the Incanta collection. It perfectly fits the organic, whimsical theme planned with so much beautiful detailing throughout the bodice, sleeves and skirt. On the morning of the shoot, we got so lucky with the weather. We were shooting between 8.30am and 9.30am when the fog was just lifting and the morning light created such a beautiful glow. It helped create some incredible, dramatic shots.”

FABULOUS FLORALS
These local florists tell us why these arrangements work so well…
To have and to hold
I love these bouquets because they shout ‘autumn wedding’. It’s always so lovely to work with seasonal colours; I love all of the seasons. Karon Breckon www.meadowsandmulberry.co.uk
This bouquet holds many memories. My first wedding booking! My favourite incredible David Austen roses with their amazing textures and scent and my most requested bouquet from brides. Helen Emson www.willowandbearfloraldesign.com

I really love the modern and structured look of a bouquet with no foliage, as well as the tonal colour palette of soft whites and pinks. Bethan Howlett www.bureaubotany.co.uk

Made with predominantly British grown flowers and created with lots of variety and texture, this was one of our favourite end-of-summer colour palettes. Sam Haigh & Erika McManus www.tweedlefloraldesign.co.uk
This summer berry colour palette really pops against a white dress and incorporates seasonal berries and flowers to coordinate with the summer. Kelly Stanford www.foxflora.co.uk 53

One of the biggest tips I can provide to my couples is that colour makes your flowers work harder for you! Consult with your florist to guide you on colour, design and flowers that fit seamlessly with your day. Kelly Stanford www.foxflora.co.uk
An elopement wedding for a small gathering, with a table decoration up above the guests. It’s a favourite of mine because it has the candles below, which when lit, adds to the ambiance and romantic setting. Karon Breckon www.meadowsandmulberry.co.uk
Top table
A slimline bowl arrangement which can sit well on both long and round tables, with a feature piece to carry the floral design across the table and float away at the end works so well. Sam Haigh & Erika McManus www.tweedlefloraldesign.co.uk 54

This a modern take on a centrepiece, with lots of depth, varying heights and negative space. There's both an untamed but clean feel to it, and we just loved creating it! Kim Chambers https://dreamboatsandcarousels.co.uk

Footed bowls are a firm favourite of mine, and are the perfect way to create a big impact with florals whilst keeping below your guest’s eyeline when they’re sat on the table. They work really well on both round tables and trestle tables. Bethan Howlett www.bureaubotany.co.uk

Showstoppers Instagram-worthy pieces of art!
This hanging installation is one of my all-time favourites. Tipis are a huge blank canvas (quite literally) and they’re just calling out for the tall space above your heads to be filled with a showstopper of a floral cloud. Bethan Howlett www.bureaubotany.co.uk

The wow factor is woven into every seam of D A N U B E . A stunning boho wedding jumpsuit, featuring palazzocut pants, a stylish sleeveless bodice with lace detailing throughout that goes down in the back to create drama. Made from stretched satin crepe, DANUBE brings comfort and elegance in equal measure.
M E L A N I E is a modern graceful wedding gown that almost floats on air with its softly gathered chiffon skirt that stands in sharp contrast with a fitted bodice, and dainty double straps. The V-neckline in the front and the open back notch up the sheer drama as the bride walks down the aisle.

It really does do what it says on the bottle, rebuilding the strands for healthier-looking, glossy hair. I've used it every day for four days and can already see such a difference, the frizz is smoother, and my hair looks more wavy than unruly! It's become my new haircare essential.” – Claire Ridley

THICK AND UNRULY Viva La Moisture Shampoo (£19.99), www.salon64products.co.uk “This shampoo uses only natural, cruelty-free ingredients to help hydrate tired locks. I’ve even received a few compliments since using it.” – Melissa Barker

DULL AND FINE OGX Frizz Free + Keratin Smoothing Oil Shampoo (£5.32) and Conditioner (£5.32), www.superdrug.com “The smell of this shampoo is what does it for me, the scent lasts for days and the products leave a fantastic shine. Enriched with keratin oil, the strengthening formulas tend to brittle hair damaged by excessive heat, chemical processes or general wear and tear, so it’s perfect for the summer months ahead. A lovely product to use.” – Rachel Westall

DRY WITH SPLIT ENDS Christophe Robin Regenerating Mask with Prickly Pear Oil (£50), and Christophe Robin Regenerating Shampoo with Prickly Pear Oil (£31), www.christopherobin.co.uk “This regenerating duo, infused with prickly pear oil, smells fantastic. After just one use, the nourishing formulas have transformed my hair, leaving behind a shiny finish with less frizz – hallelujah! The mask worked wonders for me, and I love how you only need to wait five minutes for it to work its magic – I can be very impatient sometimes. All in all, I would highly recommend it!” – Olivia Gibson

FINE HAIR LACKING VOLUME Grow Gorgeous Volume Duo (£27), www.growgorgeous.co.uk “After rinsing the products out, my hair was left intensely soft and smooth, and instantly felt like it had more body, even when soaking wet – the Grow Gorgeous Volume Conditioner is the detangler my dreams are made of! I was careful to take my time blow drying, section by section with a barrel brush and was amazed to see that my lifeless, flat hair looked double the thickness and had a bounce to it. I genuinely cannot wait to continue using.” – Beth Morton 72
Haircare challenge
DRY AND DAMAGED Naturecan CBD Infused Coconut Shampoo (£16.99) and Conditioner (£16.99), https://uk.naturecan.com “I won’t lie, I’m a bit dubious about products containing CBD as I’ve tried moisturisers with it and honestly can’t tell the difference. However, this shampoo and conditioner surpassed my expectations tenfold. It left my dry and damaged hair looking healthy and glossy after just one wash. I actually said ‘oh my gosh look at my hair!’ as I swished it like I was in a TV advert, and the coconut scent is divine! Tip: you really do have to ‘thoroughly’ massage it into your hair and scalp as directed to get it to lather up.” – Danielle Harvey

Beauty
Q&A
Our local experts answer your questions FINE LINES FIXED! I’m getting married at 40 and have a few fine lines and wrinkles. How can I best conceal these on my wedding day without looking caked in make-up? Congratulations on your exciting upcoming wedding! A great way to prevent the exaggeration of fine lines is to use lightweight products, this prevents the make-up from caking. Using a silicone based mattifying product such as The Trinny London Miracle Blur or the Hourglass Vanish Airbrush Concealer will help to minimise the appearance of fine lines. The Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powders do a great job of giving the skin a diffused glow at the end of makeup application. I hope it goes well! I know you’ll look amazing! Ellie Ryder www.eleanorjaynemakeupartistry.com
STAYING POWER I find my make-up, especially mascara, smudges during the day. How do I make sure it stays in place on my wedding day? Smudgy mascara is a tricky one and super common. Using a waterproof mascara will help and a tiny bit of translucent powder just to soak up any excess oils from concealer or foundation in that area will keep you smudge-free on your big day! Victoria Farr www.victoriafarr.co.uk 73

BEAUTY NEWS
FULL BLAST
There are plenty of hair products out there offering volume and texture, but the problem with these is that they’re formulated with typical texturising ingredients that weigh strands down. What’s more, fine hair in particular comes with its own challenges as it can’t hang on to the added body boost. So, Living Proof decided to step up to the plate and create its new Full Dry Volume & Texture Spay that not only does what it says on the can but also provides flexible hold for even more style-staying power. Perfect for the ultimate bridal updo – use it as your braid aid, messy bun hero or bouncy blowout finisher. £28, available at www.lookfantastic.com

SUITED AND BOOTED

I feel selfish admitting that I didn’t realise how stressful suit shopping would be for Dave. You

always hear about the bride struggling to find the perfect dress, and there’s so much pressure to get it right, but you never really hear the same for the groom-to-be. When we popped into our local suit store a few weeks ago, it surprised me when Dave said he felt stressed trying to make the right decision as he is usually very calm and collected. He tried on a few different styles and colours, but none left him feeling wowed or in his words: ‘like a suit I’m going to get married in’. He came away from that first appointment feeling confused about what to wear and, if anything, a bit deflated. We decided to leave it for a few weeks and then try again. This time we went to a different store that Dave’s brother had used for his wedding. We visited on a weekday, so it was very quiet, and the team gave Dave their undivided attention. Nothing was too much trouble and, within 30 minutes, Dave had found the perfect suit and was grinning from ear to ear. The team helped reassure him about what style suits his shape and what would look good with our sage green colour scheme. He opted for a three-piece blue suit with a grey waistcoat, brown shoes and a sage green tie and pocket square. As Dave wanted to stand out on the day, we hired the same suit but with a blue waistcoat for the groomsmen and our dads to wear. We’re going back soon to get everyone else fitted, and I’m excited to see them all together on the day.
READY, SET, FILM! We were unsure throughout the planning process if we were going to book a
videographer mainly due to our budget. Dave wasn’t keen on the idea after seeing a few highlight films and with a lot of expense at the time, we decided to leave it. So it surprised me when a few weeks ago Dave said he wanted to book one. He’d seen a friend’s recent wedding video and liked the idea of being able to watch the day back. I’m pleased we decided to go for it, and luckily the supplier that we wanted still had availability. We’ve opted for a half-day package, which includes the ceremony, drinks reception and speeches. Although I would have loved to have had everyone getting ready and our first dance on film, it just made more sense for us financially to go for the smaller package. I’m really excited to see how it will turn out and be able to get all our friends and family around to watch it after the wedding. Check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing my dress alternations, hair and make-up trial and last-minute planning.

can’t believe that this is the penultimate bride’s diary before I walk down the aisle. It’s so strange knowing that in just a few months I will become Mrs Cullen. I know a few of my married friends have chosen to keep their maiden name or hyphenate but for me, taking Dave’s last name was really important. My parents have been together for more than 30 years, but never married. I always hated having a different last name to my mum; so it might sound silly, but I like the idea of our family having one name and I’m really looking forward to sharing that with him (also Twilight is secretly one of my guility pleasures – so the 15-year-old in me is excited to be taking on the Cullen name). In this issue, read all about Dave trying to find the perfect suit and our search for a last-minute videographer.

I
BRIDE’S DIARY Here are our top tips that we’ve learned during wedding planning:
VENUE
CATERING
❤ Check if you’re allowed confetti. We’re only allowed real petals, and bio-degradable versions aren’t an option. ❤ Find out if you can have sparklers as some venues don’t allow them. ❤ Check whether there are any local taxi companies in the area. If so, pass along the details to your guests.
❤ Ask your supplier if cutlery and linen are included in your quote. ❤ Make sure your supplier caters for all dietary requirements. ❤ Before booking, find out how many options you get to pick for each course.
PHOTOGRAPHER
JEWELLERY
❤ Talk to your photographer about visiting the property before the wedding. We’re planning to meet ours at the venue so he can see where the best photograph opportunities are. ❤ Find out how long your online gallery will be active for. ❤ If you’re feeling anxious near the wedding, get in touch with your photographer. They’ll be able to talk through the day with you to help calm your nerves.
❤ Think about the details on your dress before buying your jewellery. If your gown is heavily beaded, it might be worth choosing simple, understated options. ❤ It can be overwhelming trying to decide what to wear. Talk through options with your wedding party to see what other people suggest. ❤ Pick out key elements of your dress and see if you can complement them with your jewellery.
ALTERNATIONS
CAKE

OLD HOLLYWOOD STYLE We’re having a glitz and glamour-themed wedding but are on a tight budget. Do you have any suggestions? Glitz and glamour on a budget… here, I feel the guests are one of the biggest assets in this theme! Go for black tie and cocktail dresses, or even better full-length gowns and all the guests will bring another level of style and sophistication to your wedding! Anna Winkworth | Thicket Priory www.thicketpriory.co.uk
ECO QUEENS I want to plan an eco-friendly hen party for my best friend. Please help! A hen do at home is the ultimate easy, affordable and sustainable hen-do. You can combine all your bride-to-be’s favourite ideas into one accessible fun-filled day and night. You can encourage all your guests to car share so no minibus is needed and there’s no waiting around in the cold for transport to arrive. Eating and drinking will be cheaper and it’s easier for older relatives to join in the fun too. Have fun knocking up your own cocktails or arrange for a butler to come to you. You could also arrange for a buffet or backyard barbecue caterer to feed you all, so there’s no washing up afterwards! If your bride-to-be enjoys crafting, why not bring in a workshop provider to offer something fun and informative that leaves everyone with a pretty, useable item or two to take away. Examples include candle-making or making your own natural toiletries, from lip and cheek tints to soaps, bath bombs or body butter. Sessions like this can be done around the kitchen table or from benches in the garden. Another popular craft workshop suitable for a hen party at home is flower crown making. Afterwards, you’ll be able to take Instagram-worthy photos of you all looking like festival queens or forest fairies, depending on your vibe. No more flower crown filters needed! MUM’S THE WORD What gift could I purchase for Mother of the Bride and Mother of the Groom? I think it’s really lovely when couples give presents together and make both mums feel special. A lovely note as a thank you and some anecdotes and stories written down is a lovely touch and would be sure to pull on their heart strings – a great way to start bonding as a new family. My Billet Doux makes cushions with antique and vintage fabrics and ribbons with a secret pocket for a notebook which could contain such words – a one-of-a-kind gift to celebrate and remember the beautiful wedding day. WORDS OF WISDOM I’m having an outdoor ceremony. I don’t know whether to book a humanist or an independent celebrant. Can you help? A celebrant led wedding ceremony is meaningful, relaxed, fun, totally personalised and engaging. Both humanist and independent celebrants write and conduct celebratory wedding ceremonies that focus on the couple and their story. In Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Channel Isles, the ceremonies that humanist celebrants conduct are legally recognised. Right now, the national human rights charity, Humanists UK is fighting for legal recognition of all humanist weddings, to bring England and Wales in line with the rest of the UK. There is a Law Commission Review due out in summer 2022, that will hopefully help to realise this long overdue change in law. Until laws are changed, couples having any celebrant led wedding ceremony will need to arrange the legal documentation of their marriage with the Registrar, and this can be done for around £50. The main difference between humanist and independent celebrants is that humanist celebrants are trained and regulated by Humanists UK, which has been delivering non-religious, inclusive, bespoke ceremonies for around 100 years. Budding celebrants are interviewed for their skill set and values, and trained and mentored by other humanist celebrants in the network. They’re accredited shortly after delivering their first ceremony and once up and running, are subject to regular peer reviews and annual CPD. The national network of humanist celebrants works together to assure quality and reliability of all celebrants and all celebrants must be accredited and a part of the national Humanist Ceremonies network in order to operate. Ceremonies are meaningful, but non-religious and inclusive. If you choose a celebrant to conduct your wedding, you’re already on the right path to having an amazing wedding day with the ceremony as its beating heart! If you’re not sure whether to book a humanist or an independent celebrant – please don’t just go on price. Draw on reputation, word of mouth or do some online research. Go onto a celebrant’s website and social media – or ask your wedding venue if they’ve seen celebrants in action. Online, look at a celebrant’s style of writing, photos of weddings they’ve carried out, watch any videos they’ve posted, and most importantly, read their reviews. If you like their style, give them a call or set up a Zoom meeting before you book! Rachael Meyer | Humanist Celebrant www.rachaelmeyer.com

SAVE THE FIRST DANCE I want lovely photos of my first dance. What tips can you suggest? First things first, those disco lights your DJ is providing might bring a vibe to the party but you don’t want to be shades of green, red and blue in your photos therefore I recommend asking the DJ to hold fire on any coloured lights till after the first dance. Secondly, don’t feel like you need to pick a song that’s ‘traditional’ pick something that has meaning to the both of you. Songs have such an amazing nostalgia, pick something that takes you both back to a moment. Thirdly, confetti cannons during the first dance are epic! My next tip would be to make the next couple of songs after the first dance bangers! People tend to save their best songs till later on in the night but put on the songs that are guaranteed to get everyone up and dancing and start the party like you mean to go on. Lastly, embrace your moment, no elaborate dance routines required (unless you want to!) don’t overthink it, enjoy your moment and soak up all the feelings of the day. AFTERNOON TEA A dream for a micro wedding or vintage-themed affair, an afternoon tea is sure to bring a smile to everyone’s faces.
D
C D is for DOUGHNUTS The doughnut wall: surely the best invention to hit the wedding market in recent years! These hoops of joy are bound to prove popular, and provide great fuel for the dancefloor.
E
E is for ECO-FRIENDLY One way to make your big-day dining sustainable is to opt for biodegradable dinnerware if you’re eating al fresco or in a buffet-style setting. Look for ethically-sourced and environmentally friendly materials such as bamboo, wood, paper or plant-based compostable products. It’s also worth checking out your venue’s policy on recycling.
F
C is for COCKTAILS Why not create a bespoke cocktail for your drinks reception, something that reflects your theme or you as a couple? Check out www.yorkshirebartender.co.uk
B is for BARBECUE Sure to please, a barbecue is the ideal fit for a summer wedding. It’s simple to cater for all tastes and dietary needs, plus the theatre of the food cooking amongst you creates a wonderful atmosphere.
F is for FAVOURS Factor some treats into your wedding favours for happy faces all around. How about some personalised cookies or mini bottles of your favourite tipple? Check out www.junipercakery.co.uk

L
H
G is for GRAZING Still massively on trend, grazing platters are a great way to encourage interaction between your guests and are superdelicious to boot. There are so many options from cold platters and salads to street food options and barbequed meats all to be enjoyed and remembered. Check out https://bluescatering.co.uk
H is for HOG ROAST The versatility of a hog roast makes it one of the most popular forms of wedding catering. Serve with an array of salads and sides for an informal wedding breakfast feast or incorporate as an evening food station. Check out www.spittingpigyorkshire.co.uk
I
I is for ICE CREAM Van, bike or trike: ice cream can be served at your wedding in a variety of quirky ways and will be most welcome on a hot day. Check out www.theicedreamexperience.co.uk
K
K is for KNOWLEDGE The benefits of consulting a professional can never be underestimated. Whether it’s your venue’s recommended caterer or one you’ve sourced for yourself, they’ll work closely with you to create the menu of your dreams. They’re a fount of all wisdom when it comes to your wedding breakfast, so don’t be afraid to ask them anything.
N
M
P
Q
L is for LATE The wedding breakfast can end up being served quite late in the day by the time you’ve said ‘I do’, and popped off for your photographs. So, to prevent your loved ones flagging, ensure there are plenty of delicious canapés on hand for the drinks reception. A selection of five to six is a good guide and we love the idea of mini fish ‘n’ chip cones or warming bitesize pies for the winter. N is for NO WASTAGE Food wastage at weddings is a huge issue, so find out if your venue is signed up to a scheme such as Too Good To Go (https://toogoodtogo.org) that connects its app users to with businesses that have surplus food, allowing it to be enjoyed rather than wasted. If not, you could consider donating any leftovers to the local food bank.
P is for PIZZA Pizza trucks are a great option for the evening reception. With a variety of flavours on offer, there’ll be something to keep even the most fussy eaters happy. Check out www.kneadnfeed.co.uk
84
M is for MOBILE BAR The choices are practically endless with more fun and fab ideas cropping up all the time. We love horsebox bars that serve speciality tipples such as an array of gins or prosecco for your postvow reception.
O is for ORIGIN Some venues grow their own herbs and vegetables and many caterers will support local farmers by using their meat and produce. Serving locally-sourced food at your wedding not only adds to the ambience, but also supports the community, ensures quality and offers sustainability by reducing the miles it’s had to travel. Q is for QUICHE Buffets are still the most popular option for an evening feast. If that conjures up less than appetising images of quiche and sandwiches for you, fear not. The modern buffet is a thing of beauty with options like street food stations, tapas, sausage sarnies and mini sliders. Check out www.hinchliffes.com/Event-Catering
R
T
R is for RAISE A GLASS Make sure your guests have a glass in hand to toast your nuptials. Try some local flavour by checking out your local vineyard, and who doesn’t love a pimp your prosecco station?
S
T is for TRADITIONAL Have a think about the ambience you’re trying to create and that’ll steer you towards a dining style. Is an elegant, more traditional seated three-course dining experience your thing, or do you dream of a relaxed boho-vibe with food trucks or table plan-free grazing?
W
S is for STREET FOOD Street food no longer conjures up visions of dodgy burger vans. It now means fresh, exciting cuisine cooked with love, with flavours from all over the world. Check out www.elkantina.co.uk
U
CATERING
U is for UNDERNEATH THE ARCHES Whatever food option you go for, make it beautiful! Ceremony arches can be moved and utilised in your reception space – they provide a stylish backdrop for any food, dessert or cake table for example.
V
V is for VEGETARIAN and VEGAN One stress-free way to ensure all dietary needs are catered for is to create an inclusive menu with options to suit everyone. The days of bland and uninspiring vegetarian food are long gone. Alternatively, offer dishes with an interchangeable element should someone need a vegan or dairy-free option, that way you can still have your dream menu with just a few switches. Talk to your caterer about your requirements as they’re sure to have the inspiration and expertise to pull it off. Check out www.bilberrybee.co.uk
W is for WORLD CUISINE Spice up your life with an exciting international menu. If you love overseas travel and want the all-important meal to reflect this, talk to your caterer about serving your favourite world cuisine. Your wedding will be the talk of the town!
Y is YORKSHIRE PUDDING Extra yorkies with your roast is a must! We’ve even seen Yorkshire pudding wraps and even a Yorkshire pudding cake over the years! Check out www.weddingcaterersyorkshire.catering
X Z
X is X MARKS THE SPOT Don’t forget to incorporate catering options into your RSVPs. Your caterer will need to know of any food intolerances or dietary requirements ahead of time when tailoring your menu.
Z is for ZINFANDEL People tend to prefer certain types of wine over others, depending on the season. For example, if your wedding is outdoors and during the summer, white wines and even rosé will be a big hit. Red wine is perfect for cooler months. Zinfandel goes well with barbeque, red and grilled meats, and spicy foods. This bold red wine has intense flavours like black pepper or chocolate. 85

Mantis, a conservation-focused hospitality group with luxury properties located across the globe, has announced the opening of the Founders Railway Carriage at Mantis Founders Lodge in South Africa. Originally built in the 1970s, the carriage is permanently stationed at the top of a hill within Mantis’ private concession. Ideal for honeymoons, the railway carriage features indoor and outdoor dining, lounge areas, and an expansive deck with a private swimming pool. The newly-built Honeymoon Pod was designed to be an escape for couples. Perched above the central lodge, the suite offers unobstructed views of the valley. Romantic services can be arranged including intimate dinners for two and picnics overlooking the waterhole with amazing game drives to view the big five. The railway carriage belongs to conservation pioneer and Mantis founder and chairman, Adrian Gardiner, who tells us: “In 1990 I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to buy a train carriage which I converted into a first-class coach, and I managed to come to an agreement with the railways which enabled me to attach the carriage to the regular passenger services. It has long been my dream to bring the carriage to its very own station. Now others can enjoy it and create their very own personalised holiday adventures for generations to come while experiencing the excitement of sleeping on board a railway carriage.” To find out more, visit www.mantiscollection.com

A romantic escape Travel editor Melissa Barker reveals why Mauritius is the perfect honeymoon destination
A
fter being stuck in the UK for what feels like a lifetime, I’m sure that I’m not alone in saying that I’d forgotten how exciting travelling could be. I was apprehensive about flying again, but the moment I stepped off the plane in tropical Mauritius and the heat hit me, I felt at ease. Whether you’re after rest and relaxation to recover from the stress of wedding planning or an action-packed adventure, Beachcomber has a resort to suit. With eight properties in Mauritius, each offering something different, the team can tailor-make your holiday across a range of price points. I was lucky enough to visit four of the luxurious hotels during my stay and it was certainly a trip to remember! For those of you who don’t know much about Mauritius, it’s located in the Indian Ocean and is brimming with culture and Instagram-worthy snaps at every turn. Roughly an 11-hour flight from the UK with Air Mauritius, it’s famous for its picturesque beaches, breathtaking lagoons and crystal-clear reefs. The spoken language is English and Mauritian Creole, so you won’t need to worry about translations, and it’s the only known habitat for the now-extinct dodo bird. VICTORIA BEACHCOMBER RESORT & SPA The four-star Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa is situated on the North West coast and is conveniently located between the tourist hub of Grand Baie and the capital city of Port Louis. The sea-facing rooms offer the perfect space to begin your stay in style, with king-sized beds, balconies, walk-in showers, fluffy towels, complimentary toiletries and luxurious baths. Those who want to celebrate married life in privacy can book into the adult-only ‘Victoria for 2’ section. Tranquil and romantic, this area is ideal for those who want to relax in each other’s company while enjoying the on-site amenities.

With access to Mont Choisy Le Golf, an 18-hole golf course located 10 minutes away from the resort, a host of water sports, pools and five restaurants, there’s plenty to see and do during your time here. TROU AUX BICHES BEACHCOMBER The five-star Trou aux Biches Beachcomber is situated on the coast with nearly two kilometres of white sandy beaches and a turquoise lagoon. The villas and beachfront suites have private pools that are built in crescents to create a village-like feel. The villas open out onto large pools, which look glorious first thing in the morning, and the outdoor showers are pure bliss! The resort has large pools in each of the main areas, and with the sea only ever a few minutes away, it’s easy to feel relaxed and stressfree here. With an emphasis on environmental preservation, all the Beachcomber properties are eco-friendly and use environmentally-friendly bottles, reuse water and some have on-site beehives to produce honey. DINAROBIN BEACHCOMBER GOLF RESORT & SPA AND PARADIS BEACHCOMBER GOLF RESORT & SPA Dinarobin Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa is a gem for those wanting to get away from it all. This five-star hotel is in the South-West part of the island and shares facilities with Paradis Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa. Offering access to the 18-hole par 72 golf course, water sports and eight inviting restaurants (four at each hotel), there is a wide range of accommodation to choose from, and some even come with a private chef and a golf buggy so you can travel around in style. The spectacular views of Le Morne mountain are Insta-worthy, and the luscious greenery will make you feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life – perfect for your post-wedding bubble! a shuttle service that runs between the two resorts, which is great fun and gives you the freedom to explore without worrying. WINE AND DINE When I think of the food and drink in Mauritius, I immediately think of rum. This tipple is used in several drinks and traditional dishes on the island. One of the most popular is Ti Punch, a rum cocktail that has a real kick to it, especially if you’re a lightweight like me! The Beachcomber properties have a range of restaurants, each serving different cuisines. Nautil Café at Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa has a large lunch menu accomodating even the fussiest of eaters, while Trou aux Biches Beachcomber has six restaurants offering different cuisines from Asia to Mediterranean. At the Mahiya restaurant, you’ll have the opportunity to wear traditional Indian clothes and watch the chef work through the glass window before tasting the delicious Indian cuisine. Finally, Paradis Beachcomber has an incredible seafood restaurant called Marlin. With options to suit all dietary requirements, the staff will go above and beyond to ensure you have everything you need, and the food is amazing – I’m still thinking about the iced nougat weeks later, delish! EXPLORING THE ISLAND There are lots of fun and interesting places to visit while on your honeymoon with Mautourco. The local market at Port Louis is a great way of seeing how the locals live and what produce is on offer. You can grab some souvenirs for the family and help support the community in the process. The Rhumerie de Chamarel is a rum distillery surrounded by tropical gardens that look gorgeous even in the rain. The restaurant is a must-try, especially the rum baba – a soft dessert, almost like a doughnut, that’s been soaked in rum. Take part in a fascinating tour followed by a tasting with all the drinks available to purchase in the gift shop. If you’re heading down South, take the time to visit Chamarel Falls. It’s the highest waterfall in Mauritius, and there are tortoises, monkeys and more natural wonders nearby.

REST AND RELAXATION The spas at the Beachcomber properties are superb and offer treatments ideal for post-vows R&R. The signature massage includes a sugarcane scrub, which helps remove any dead cells and leaves your skin feeling soft and like new. You can do this together before enjoying a back, leg and neck massage. One of the stand out things that Beachcomber offer is yoga by the beach. A great way to relax and rejuvenate, the teachers are very knowledgeable and will show you breathing techniques and stretches to help with your day-to-day lives when you finally return home. FUN IN THE SUN The activities available across the Beachcomber properties are ideal for those who want to learn a skill or try something new. The expert team will be able to accommodate all abilities and help you try water skiing, windsurfing, sailing, snorkelling, pedal boats, tennis or wakeboarding. As part of the honeymoon package, you’ll receive champagne or sparkling wine in your room and a choice of one Beachcomber experience, such as a massage, a boat cruise, wine tasting, a cooking class, horseback riding or an introduction to scuba diving. I’d recommend the sunset boat cruise, where you enjoy a glass of bubbly while taking in the coastal sights at the most beautiful and romantic time of day. HONEYMOON BLISS If you’re looking for an adventure, a relaxing beach stay or a familymoon, Mauritius is the perfect destination. There’s plenty to see and do around the island, and the Beachcomber resorts will leave you feeling like royalty. I truly loved my time in Mauritius, so much so I don’t think my hubby-to-be will need much convincing to consider our own honeymoon there! Escape to

Sarah Gallivan discovers the great outdoors at Nottinghamshire’s Sherwood Hideaway

xperience a luxury escape in the heart of Sherwood Forest at The Sherwood Hideaway at Thorseby. Surrounded by woodland, this selection of luxury lodges and log cabins is an oasis of calm. I stayed with my husband, our two children and dog and it was the perfect opportunity to reconnect after leaving the hustle and bustle of daily life behind us – upon arrival I felt instantly relaxed. Choose to explore and enjoy the range of activities on offer or simply kick back and relax, the choice is yours. CHOOSE YOUR HIDEAWAY With a choice of traditional, rustic and woodland lodges, one, two or three bedrooms and the option of taking your furry friend along to a pet-friendly lodge, there’s something for everyone. We stayed in a Rustic Pet-Friendly lodge and it was gorgeous. Indoors it boasted stylish interiors, modern fixtures and fittings and a cosy log-burner effect fire. We were greeted with a much-welcomed bottle of wine, locally produced fine chocolates and a selection of treats for the pooch – even he didn’t miss out! Outdoors, there’s the added bonus of a private hot tub, barbeque area and decking area looking out into the forest and the lodges are well laid out allowing for ample external space and privacy.

DISCOVER AND EXPLORE Cycling – Take your bikes to explore more of the Thorseby Estate, Sherwood Forest and surrounding areas. Trails are well marked out along road and dirt tracks and they suit all abilities. What’s more, each lodge has its own cycle rack so your bikes can be easily stored. Walking – We took a walk through the estate to Thorseby Hall, the Grade I listed 19th-century country house. The tree-lined paths were easy to follow, and my son and daughter loved delving deep into the woods. The walk took 45 minutes at a steady pace and the coffee and cake in the Thorseby Courtyard, children’s woodland play area and military museum was well worth the stroll.
TIE THE KNOT You can reserve these luxury lodges as accommodation for nuptials at nearby venues or if you’d love a woodland wedding, The Sherwood Hideaway can provide a marquee in which to host your day.
Fishing – If fishing’s your thing, Sherwood Hideaway guests have access to a private members-only fly-fishing lake, approximately 1 mile from the retreat. Falconry – Walk through the woods with the birds of prey or have them visiting the lodge on your own decking area, book a birthday package or take part in a Falconry Day where you’ll learn how to fly and handle hawks, falcons, owls and eagles, as they glide through the treetops. Relaxing – Thorsby Hall Spa is on your doorstep. With its fully equipped gym, indoor pool with jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and range of innovative treatments, why not go and indulge?
