ell, 2020 was a year we won’t forget in a hurry! I know we’re not out of the woods, but I feel like as we wake up to a new year, blinking into the January light, there’s renewed hope and excitement for the future. I bought myself two new outfits for weddings I had in the diary last year, which have been left hanging in the wardrobe, and I’m quietly confident I’ll get to pull them out in 2021! So how are you finding wedding planning during a pandemic? I know it’s been a tough ride, but I hope the fact that Your Yorkshire Wedding has been here, celebrating the best of the local wedding industry, has helped. We will always bang the drum for local indie businesses; they’ve weathered the storm and supported their couples throughout, now’s the time to support them in return. For those of you who are newly engaged over the festive period and Valentine’s Day – congratulations and welcome! We’ve got an epic issue for you, including expert advice for those whose plans have changed dramatically (page 51), a round-up of beautiful venues in and around Leeds and Bradford (page 21) and an introduction to the people behind the area’s best bridal boutiques (page 64). We love to showcase reader weddings (from page 26), so get in touch if you’d like to see yours featured!

SWEET DELIGHTS Like so many wedding businesses, cake designer Sweet Chic felt the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, but owner Helen Birkinshaw was determined to adapt to keep her business alive. “During the first lockdown we started offering personalised iced cookies and chocolate treats,” Helen explains. “There were some beautiful messages of love leaving Sweet Chic HQ.” As more couples were having to postpone their big days, Helen decided it was time to take a risk and launch something totally new. “I teamed up with like-minded small local businesses, who create handmade items, to set up the York Hamper Company,” she explains. “We offer luxury hampers and gifts with a passion for all things handmade and local. I’m both terrified and elated to be starting something new in such uncertain times, but I believe we’re stronger together and we must diversify to continue doing what we love.” The York Hamper Company will soon develop a wedding range, including Sweet Chic bridesmaid proposal boxes, gifts for the bridal party and treats for the night before the wedding. BURSTING WITH JOY We’re wishing a huge congratulations to Jacqui Saxon of The Ultimate Balloon Company, who will be celebrating her 29th wedding season in 2021. “I’m also refurbishing my wedding studio at my Rotherham workshop,” Jacqui says. “This will be ready to welcome visitors again, whenever it’s safe to do so. I have a wealth of experience and I’m now decorating weddings for the children of my original couples – I’m very proud of that.” Not one to rest on her laurels, over lockdown Jacqui honed her skills by attending a five-day virtual balloon convention and plenty of other virtual sessions to learn new and exciting techniques. “I can’t wait to show my new designs to my couples for 2021 and beyond,” Jacqui says. CHEERS TO THAT! Totem Tipi has purchased a mobile caravan bar called Bar-A-Van and has been working on the launch of Bar Totem as a sister company to its tipi and events brand. “Purchasing a business in a pandemic was a little unnerving,” owner Charlie Land says. “However, we’ve used the time to develop the company and our drinks packages. We also provided drinks for our local golf club over summer while their internal bar was not in use.” The company will tailor packages to suit the couple’s needs and tastes, offering drinks from the Bar-A-Van or an internal tipi bar. Looking forward, the company will be partnering with local venues to offer beautifully intimate, COVID-safe wedding packages. “Small weddings with reduced numbers can still be the day of your dreams,” Charlie says. “Tipis make such versatile spaces, which are perfect for this kind of celebration. They can be dressed to reflect your theme, but they also look beautiful on their own.” Visit www.totemtipi.co.uk

Make-up artist Toni Neylon Walker Makeup has released a gorgeous range of make-up brushes and tools. “Co Artistry Tools is an innovative, vegan and cruelty-free brand,” Toni explains. “Being a make-up artist myself means I know what’s needed most in a make-up kit, giving me the opportunity to design something really special.” Specifically designed to be multi-use, the products will simplify make-up application. “I used to find myself buying multiple sets and only using a handful of brushes from each,” Toni tells us. “Co Artistry Tools has been created to give each brush more than one purpose and will perform to the highest standard. I wanted to bring a high-end range to the cruelty-free market, and I’m very proud to have made that happen.” Each set comes with a detailed description of uses, making the whole process stress-free. AUTUMN

delights

Katherine and Sam drew inspiration from the season for their beautiful Oulton Hall wedding Images courtesy of Matt Nicholls Photography

REAL WEDDINGS

K

atherine and Sam shared two big things in common: their profession and their sense of humour. “We’re both teachers and we met while working in the same school,” Katherine tells us. “We just got on really well; I laughed at his jokes and he loved my smile.” It wasn’t long before Sam was thinking about popping the question. “Sam proposed while we were on holiday in Sri Lanka,” Katherine says. “It was after dinner one evening when we were walking along a deserted beach, while under a clear sky with twinkling stars.” Katherine admits it wasn’t a total surprise. “We had talked about getting married prior to the holiday!” she says. Back in the UK, the two began planning their perfect wedding, and set the date for 19th October, 2019. We caught up with Katherine to find out more…

THE PERFECT SETTING When it came to the ceremony venue, it was an easy choice; Katherine’s parents are both Canons at the beautiful Wakefield Cathedral. “We’ve always loved the size and majesty of it,” she says. For post-vow celebrations they chose the spectacular 18th-century Oulton Hall for its gorgeous interiors and pretty gardens. “As a hotel, it was really convenient for our guests at the end of the night,” the bride says. “In addition, the suite was large enough for our 100 guests and a dancefloor!”

PUTTING THEIR STAMP ON Drawing inspiration from the season, the couple opted for an autumnal theme with a palette of deep red, navy, burnt orange and gold. The flowers reflected this with red roses and astrantia, thistles to represent Sam’s Scottish heritage, blue berries, white roses and deep greens in the background. “For the centrepieces, we had gold bowls brimming with florals alongside tea-light holders,” Katherine says. “The top table had three sections of autumnal-coloured flowers linked together with greenery.” Two stunning white cherry blossom trees created impact in the room. The cake was three delicious tiers of Victoria sponge, chocolate and coffee, all decorated with white icing and flowers. The stationery had a classic feel, with the table plan, place settings, menus and table names all written in gold ink on white card. “The tables were named after railway stations that have significance to us, from where we grew up to where we went to university,” Katherine explains. “We also had a description of the meanings on the back of the place names.” The bride, father-of-thebride and bridesmaids arrived in style at the cathedral in two white Jaguars. After the ceremony, the newlyweds were whisked to Oulton Hall in a Rolls Royce. 27 

REAL WEDDINGS

LOOKING THE PART The bride knew she was after a timeless, elegant big-day look. “I wore a long-sleeved, lace A-line gown,” she tells us. “I teamed it with crystal drop earrings and a bracelet from my mum, which matched Sam’s cufflinks. My shoes coordinated with the blush-coloured silk lining of my dress.” The men looked dashing in navy three-piece suits, with Sam standing out with a Burns-clan tartan waistcoat. They looked fabulous alongside the bridesmaids in their deep red maxi dresses, with low backs and side splits.

IT’S A CELEBRATION! The pair chose live music for each part of the day. “We had a wonderful organist play during the ceremony,” Katherine says. “One of our friends, who is a classically trained singer, performed during the signing of the register. At Oulton Hall, a string quartet set the scene as our guests arrived before a live band got the party going in the evening! They were all a huge success as each set created the perfect ambience for each stage of the wedding.”

ON REFLECTION… Couples often find their wedding day is a rollercoaster of emotions. This was no different for Katherine and Sam. “We went from nervous to excited to exhausted at the end of the night,” Katherine smiles. “The whole day was perfect and exactly what we envisioned – there were no hiccups.” They knew they couldn’t have done it all without their dream team of local suppliers. “Our photographer, Matt Nicholls Photography, was brilliant and took gorgeous photos of us,” Katherine says. “He was also excellent at managing the crowd and keeping everyone entertained. Jodie from the venue was also amazing, helping us to organise the reception while we were planning everything from our home in London.” 29 

KATHERINE’S TOP TIP: “Set up a spreadsheet to keep on top of outgoings.”

S

tef and Arron went to the same secondary school, but it wasn’t until a few years later when they were both working at their local cinema that they were introduced. “We met in 2010, but as I only worked there when I was back from uni, we didn’t get to know each other properly until the summer of 2011,” Stef explains. “We just clicked and enjoyed the same things.” By 2018, Arron was dreaming up the perfect proposal. “He booked a surprise trip to Venice,” Stef remembers. “One evening, we took a boat to San Giorgio Maggiore, one of the islands that you can see St. Mark’s Square from, there was no one else around when Arron got down on one knee!” The pair soon set the date for 10th August, 2019, and chose Dunedin Country House as the setting. Wed-fest Bright colours, pretty wildflowers and a festival vibe in a tipi – Nicki and Toby didn’t let a pandemic stand in the way of their dream wedding Images courtesy of Jemma King Photography

N

icki and Toby met by chance in York. “We got talking on a night out,” Nicki says. “Toby lived in London at the time, but was in York visiting his brother. I was convinced I’d met him before, and we’ve hardly been apart since!” Both being teachers, they decided to go away for half term, but unable to wait any longer, Toby proposed to Nicki on the last day of term. “I thought he might have popped the question while we were away, so I was very surprised to come home from work to a proposal,” she smiles. The pair set the date for a church ceremony at All Saints in Pocklington for 19th August, 2020, but they couldn’t have imagined how the world was about to change. Nicki tells us how they planned their dream wedding during a pandemic…

37 

We’re both from different parts of the country, so it was important to us to have our wedding in the town we have made our home. We came across tipi company Boutipi at a wedding show and knew immediately it would create the feel we wanted. Pocklington Cricket Club was the perfect setting for our tipi.

Our transport was a little unconventional. We hired a tuk tuk from Ey Up! Tuk Tuk. It was a great part of the day and a very popular photo opportunity for our guests! 38

We wanted a relaxed festival-style wedding full of bright colours in pink, yellow, orange and teal. Our local florist, Mouse House, provided a gorgeous mix of colourful wild flowers, which were even more beautiful than we envisaged. I knew I wanted a flower crown, and the blooms suited this perfectly.

Our incredible cake was made by Rosa at Tea Time Yorkshire. It was a vegan semi-naked creation with two tiers of lemon and elderflower sponge and one of raspberry and vanilla sponge, all adorned with wildflowers.

REAL WEDDINGS

I spent many days in lockdown making wool tassels to hang from the tipi poles. In the days leading up to the wedding we spent hours decorating the venue ourselves with fairylights, garlands, flags, lanterns, foliage and brightly coloured ribbons.

Toby wore a navy check slim-fit suit with a floral tie and pocket square to match the bridesmaids’ sequin and tulle midi dresses. The groomsmen rocked navy three-piece suits from Burton.

Rosa and the team at Tea Time Yorkshire were outstanding. They served nibbles alongside our welcome drinks, created a delicious afternoon tea for our wedding breakfast and served a tasty barbecue in the evening. They were fabulous for catering to both us as vegans and our meat-eating family and friends.

We painted some A-boards and a pallet with chalkboard paint and Toby used colourful chalk pens to create the table plan, welcome sign and order-of-the-day. We were over the moon with the results and may have to set up a sign-writing business!

Our favours doubled as place settings, with each guest receiving a bottle of limoncello with their name attached on a luggage label. I also made each of our loved ones an orange-flavoured shortbread biscuit with marbled icing.

We set up games to entertain our guests, including giant Jenga, a tin can alley, croquet and limbo. We also had a band called The Jetters, who were incredible and performed outside in the tipi to keep in line with guidelines at the time. 39 ď ľ

I ordered a lace halter-neck dress from ASOS as a back-up option as bridal shops were closed because of COVID restrictions. However, I absolutely fell in love with it! I teamed it with mint-green platform shoes and my late-grandma’s sixty-year-old veil – it was almost identical to the lace on my dress.

“Not being able to see anyone for the five months before the big day meant that we full appreciated having our closest family and friends there to celebrate with us.”

The run-up to the wedding was very stressful. We had already made the difficult decision to reduce our guestlist to 30 people, but even five days before we weren’t sure if we’d get to have a reception. On the morning, we were so relieved that it was finally happening. It made us appreciate what’s important about the day, which allowed us to stay relaxed and not stress over minor details.

PERFECTLY FORMED While an intimate wedding may be small on guest numbers, this styled shoot shows it can be big on dreamy details Images courtesy of Bec Kerr Photography

S

heffield photographer Becky Kerr’s vision for this styled shoot was a relaxed, yet intentional micro-wedding. “I feel passionately that while traditional big days might be on hold, a microwedding can be just as big on dreamy details and gorgeous moments,” Becky says. The Chilli Barn in Otley was the perfect backdrop; its country setting providing a source of inspiration with its rolling hills, light-dappled woodland and beautiful stone courtyard. Reflecting the rural setting, the styling was overflowing with abundant flowers and foliage in a rich autumnal palette, with flickering candles and a divine grazing platter creating the most welcoming atmosphere. The wedding dress mixed exquisite detailing with a flowing fit, and the stunning hair and make-up complemented the relaxed approach. “Our talented team showed that an intimate wedding can still be considered and curated while maintaining a laid-back and easy vibe,” Becky says. ew Whitby venue Sneaton Castle, which has recently been transformed by the owners of The Stables at Cross Butts, was meant to be hosting its first wedding in 2020. As this couldn’t happen, Paylor Photography organised a collaborative shoot here instead, to showcase the venue and a team of talented local suppliers to couples. The rustic, vintage theme was accented with a pretty palette of pale pink, lemon and coral. At the centre was a bride in a handmade Kate Clara Couture gown with gorgeous lace embellishments. The abundant flowers, fully decorated tables and chic styling all added to the enchanting atmosphere inside. Outside, the gardens were beautifully captured between heavy downpours – you can’t plan everything! 47 

PLANNING SOS

PLANNING S O S We get the wed-min lowdown from some of Yorkshire’s most sought-after suppliers

OMG you’re engaged! After all the excitement of the proposal, there’s the dawning realisation that you have to plan a once-in-a-lifetime event – oh, and you’re the centre of attention. Do not fear! We’ve asked some of our favourite wedding companies to give us their top tips for what to consider before booking your suppliers and how you can adapt your day if you plan to wed during the pandemic. We’ve even split the suppliers up into three handy rounds, as a guide to when you should be booking each type of business. Starting with…

ROUND ONE – THE VENUE AND PHOTOGRAPHER. SPICER MANOR

What should couples consider before booking their venue? ❤ Choose a venue that can adapt to the size of your wedding and is versatile enough to deal with unexpected changes. Also, make sure you understand the wedding package and check there are no hidden costs. Be clear what you’re paying for and what’s included – so you don’t get any unwanted surprises! ❤ Try not to be too fixed on a date. Find a setting you love that works for you, then check their availability and choose a date. This helps to avoid disappointment and added stress. How can you help couples adapt their day during the pandemic? ❤ We have two ceremony options as well as wedding breakfast and reception choices; whether you want a large or small day we can

adapt to your preference. At Spicer Manor, you hire the whole house and the Coach House, so you can make decisions right up until the last minute about where you want to hold different aspects of your day and how many bedrooms you require.

www.dynamicpictures.co.uk

❤ Our chef is very flexible and can change the number of meals needed within a week’s notice. Having exclusive use means there are no other couples to work around. Lisa Hunt | www.spicermanor.co.uk

RJH WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY

TOTEM TIPI

What should couples consider before booking a tipi? ❤ When booking a tipi, the first question to ask yourself is how many guests you have, as this dictates how many tipis you’ll need. It’s also good to think about the type of wedding you’d like, whether that’s a formal seated affair or a more relaxed festival-style feel. Getting an idea of the couple’s vision helps us to tailor the perfect package. How can you help couples adapt their day during the pandemic? ❤ The great thing about tipis is that we can create the size of venue that suits your numbers; if you need to cut the guest list, we can reduce the amount of tipis needed and vice versa. These versatile structures feel intimate and cosy for 30 guests or can accommodate a large gathering of more than 200 people. Charlie Land | www.totemtipi.co.uk

What should couples consider before booking their photographer? ❤ Established photographers often get booked 12 to 18 months in advance, sometimes longer, so consider your photographer as the next step after securing your venue.

www.rjhweddingphotography.co.uk

❤ Think about having two photographers, not to be needlessly indulgent, but because there’s so much going on that having two pairs of eyes will help you get more from your photography. Also, for those special moments like coming up the aisle and morning preparations, you’ll get two perspectives, two individuals and two stories becoming one. ❤ I consistently hear couples say that they don’t look good in photos, but they soon realise that results are very different when the image is taken on a phone or selfie stick, and interacting with a person rather than doing it yourself helps you relax and produces more flattering shots. Trust that investing in a professional photographer will accentuate your best features and produce results you’ll love. How can you help couples adapt their day during the pandemic? ❤ Ask your photographer if they can produce a sneak peak of some of the images on the day. This means that your guests who haven’t been able to attend can still share in the moment. Add a hashtag to the mix, and the guests that are there can create a stream of live moments that will help others feel part of the day. Rob Harris | www.rjhweddingphotography.co.uk 51

ROUND TWO – PUTTING YOUR STAMP ON. THE FLOWER SHOP SOUTH ELMSALL

What should couples consider before booking their florist? ❤ Don’t think you can leave booking your florist to the last minute, most good florists get booked up well in advance and will limit how many weddings they do in one day. Choose a reputable supplier who can work with you to achieve the style of wedding you dream of.

www.nataliehamiltonphotography.com

❤ If a couple has a budget, we will work with them and make suggestions to help them achieve this. We create florals based on your requirements, rather than offering a set package. How can you help couples adapt their day during the pandemic? ❤ If you have to scale down your wedding, make sure you communicate with your florist to get their help to accommodate these changes. For postponements, we will simply transfer everything to your new date to make it as easy as possible.

What should couples consider before booking their cake artist? ❤ Don’t finalise your cake until you’ve made your major wedding decisions, as you’ll want the design to suit your venue, season, gown, flowers and the menu. ❤ Arrive at your consultation prepared. If you’re looking for a custom design, bring along inspiration such as a swatch of lace from your dress, an invitation or a photo of your flowers. How can you help couples adapt their day during the pandemic? ❤ Give yourself options. If you need to postpone, it’s a good idea to have a few different dates in mind so you can ask your suppliers which they have available. All being well, there will be at least one date they can all reschedule to – and that date was clearly meant to be! ❤ If you’ve had to reduce your guest numbers, consider asking the venue to slice up your cake into individual cake slice boxes with pre-addressed labels so you can post them to those who were unable to attend – at least they’ll get to experience a slice of your day. SWEET CHIC

What should couples consider before booking their cake designer? ❤ Look for a cake designer that takes an interest and is passionate about your vision, as well as someone who designs and creates cakes that excite you and opens your mind to new ideas. Most importantly, you need to trust them to create a showstopper cake for your special day.

Jackie Axe | www.southelmsallflorist.co.uk

❤ Your cake should express your personality and style. Let your cake designer guide you, and don’t be afraid to explore alternative coverings, details and designs, whether that’s a decadent dessert table, edible centrepieces or a tiered cake wrapped in solid chocolate. How can you help couples adapt their day during the pandemic? ❤ As much as it’s agonising, postponing is also an opportunity to revisit your choices and perhaps add those details that the budget didn’t previously allow. If you’re downsizing, you may feel you no longer need that five-tier cake, but if you still want the scale, then talk to your designer about artificial tiers. Alternatively, look at a more personalised offering such as dessert tables, personalised treats or an edible display. This will create a talking point and an intimate wedding full of personal touches. Helen Birkinshaw | www.sweetchic.co.uk

PLANNING SOS

ROUND THREE – ENTERTAINMENT. DJ MARK GREEN

What should couples consider before booking their DJ? ❤ After mass rescheduling of events in 2020, diaries are now filling up fast for weddings through to 2023. To avoid disappointment, get your preferred suppliers secured as early as possible. For me, the main thing is to get the evening service confirmed. You can add on additional services such as sax accompaniment or ceremony music arrangement at a later date when you have a better idea of how you want your wedding to unfold. How can you help couples adapt their day during the pandemic? ❤ If you find yourself having to downsize your wedding, you can still have an amazing day. I’ve performed at three COVID-secure weddings, and each has been truly magical. As a DJ, my usual hype-man role has been made redundant, and instead I’m now supporting my couples by creating the perfect soundtrack to their day. When planned out professionally alongside the food, decor, venue, etc., having the right musical ambience can really enhance the experience.

follow-up packages so couples can hit the dancefloor when they’ve been given the green light.

PHIL RICHARDS MUSIC

What should couples consider before booking their live music? ❤ One of the main things to think about is whether the musician has wedding experience, as a fantastic performer may not know the ins and outs of a wedding day. Things such as timing ceremony songs accurately, creating the right ambience at the champagne reception without being intrusive and choosing the right moment to get the crowd up on their feet are all skills that a professional wedding musician will have honed over the years. ❤ Consider the wide variety of packages that musicians can offer. You may want someone for just the ceremony or drinks reception, but musicians like myself can cover all your music needs for the full day – taking a burden off your mind. How can you help couples adapt their day during the pandemic? ❤ The pandemic has undoubtedly caused difficulties, but throughout the pandemic it’s been fairly consistent that live music is still allowed, provided it’s not too loud as to cause people to raise their voices unnecessarily. This means that acoustic options – such as guitarists, pianists and duos – have become increasingly popular, either amplified at a low volume or completely unplugged. Hannah Faulder catches up with some of Yorkshire’s best bridal boutique owners and designers SAY HELLO TO KERENSA DYSON OF BIJOU BRIDAL BOUTIQUE

SAY HELLO TO DESIGNER FELICITY ABEKAH OF FELISITI GREIS

Describe your boutique and

What designers do you stock? Alan Hannah, Ivory & Co. by Sarah Bussey, Mia Mia, Olivia Rose Bridal by Romantica and Nicola Anne. Bridesmaids’ dresses are by Motee Maids. How did you come to launch your business? Bijou Bridal Boutique was a dream come true! After raising my family, it was time to think about what I Kerensa’s favourite dress: wanted to do for myself. I’d always Mystical by Nicola Anne wanted a bridal boutique, which was a nod to my family being in retail and sales. After finding the right premises and researching the market, I opened my boutique in 2014 showcasing British bridal design – and I’ve never looked back! How has the pandemic affected your customers? A small number of my brides have gone ahead with their 2020 wedding. One in particular had their heart set on a day in September as it was the date that her parents and grandparents got married. Moving to 2021 would have meant changing the date as the venue was already booked. All organised for a micro-wedding in September, the venue called them a week before to say they’d had a cancellation the day before their special date in 2021, so they’ll be partying until late to make it past midnight and celebrate on the same day as her parents and grandparents!

Describe your brand and service in five words… Luxury, elegance, quality, authentic and craftsmanship. How did you come to launch your business? In 2013, I was commissioned by a friend to design a dress for a wedding she was attending. She looked stunning, and word of mouth soon travelled and the next commission I got was for six bridesmaids’ dresses. This saw the birth of Felisiti Greis and my foot in the door of the bridal industry. It’s an incredible honour to create one-of-a-kind bespoke dresses for brides. https://elsielovephotography.com

service in five words… Special, personal, welcoming, professional and unforgettable.

How have you adapted during the pandemic? We have international and out-of-town brides, so offering a virtual service has always been a part of our process. Having this in place helped us navigate well during this pandemic. We operated virtually and designed two beautifully handcrafted couture gowns for brides who wed in October 2020. How did you come to launch your business? I started working in high street retail at 16, where I quickly progressed from shop assistant to manager. I’ve always had a love of all things creative, and sewing has been my passion since I was young. I decided to combine my retail and creative talents and opened an alterations shop. After just 18 months, I took the plunge and found bigger premises and Cinderella’s was born.

SAY HELLO TO DESIGNER KATE FEARNLEY OF KATE FEARNLEY BRIDAL Describe your boutique and service in five words… Unique, luxurious, bespoke, personal, modern. How did you come to launch your business? Established in 2002, we’re an award-winning made-to-measure, bespoke and couture bridal service, and we’ve just launched a range that will be appearing in boutiques across the country. After gaining my fashion and textile degree, I set up an independent label focusing on occasionwear. The boutique itself has been in my family for three generations, and I took it over and started offering a bespoke and couture service. We are appointment-only, and the relaxed and personal service we offer is part of the bridal experience.

How has the pandemic affected your customers? We’ve had highs and lows in these unprecedented times. Couples have been put under a lot of pressure with restrictions and venues having to close. One of our couples had to bring their wedding forward at very short notice to avoid lockdown delaying their day. All the suppliers did an amazing job of making the couple’s big day one to remember. What are your top tips for brides looking for their dream dress? ❤ Don’t set your heart on a particular style – try on a variety of shapes and styles. ❤ Make sure your budget includes alterations, accessories and dress cleaning. How have you and your customers adapted during the pandemic? We’ve had some lovely brides finally having their special day after rearranging it several times. It might not be what they had originally planned, but they looked beautiful in their dresses and embraced the intimacy of this new form of wedding. It means the world to know that we contributed to making that bride feel fantastic. What are your top tips for brides looking for their dream dress? ❤ Invest in good-quality underwear. ❤ Go out of your comfort zone when trying on styles – you might be surprised at what you end up choosing. ❤ Not everyone suits white, so choose a colour that works with your skin tone such as shell pink. SAY HELLO TO LISA MARIE WASDEN OF CRISTELLO COUTURE BY LISA MARIE

How did you come to launch your business? I was ready for a change of career, and had been looking for a business in the wedding industry. Having been a ceremonies officer for the registry office for several years, I was noticing how many brides’ dresses weren’t fitting them very well, and couldn’t understand how a bridal boutique would let that happen. One thing lead to another, and with the love and support of my husband and children I launched Ever After Bridal Wear. How have you adapted during the pandemic? Several of my brides have gone ahead with intimate ceremonies and had wonderful days where the getting married part was more important than the reception. We’ve also taken the opportunity to connect with other wedding industry friends; I recently took part in a gothic photo shoot, where we lit a candle in the darkness to prove that the wedding industry is still very much alive. How did you come to launch your business? The inspiration came when I married my husband in Tuscany in 2015. I planned the whole wedding from start to finish and it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I wanted to help other brides have that incredible experience; this gave me the focus and determination to do it in style! Q&A Local pro Kate Pymm Make-Up answers your question…

We’re having an intimate wedding by candlelight. What make-up will ensure my features stand out in this romantic lighting? For this type of ceremony, you want your skin to give off that warm candlelit glow, so I would focus on really highlighting your skin. Concentrate on the upper cheeks, the central section of your forehead, your brow bones and the cupid’s bow. Skin is definitely the main focus here. Look for a primer that has a radiance to it, a radiance fluid used underneath your preferred foundation or just a beautiful highlighter. I’m a huge fan of radiant skin, so for me I can’t get enough glow! It will look so stunning in this setting too. Aside from giving warmth to your skin, I would opt for the softest smoky eye, a soft contour and full lips. Line your lips first, before applying a strong colour to really make a statement. Red, berry or a pop of pink are all ideal shades to reflect the season, and of course, your outfit!

“Historically, matte lipsticks have been my worst enemy – being a notorious lip-biter they show up all my flaws. But it’s safe to say that this product has changed my mindset. The best thing about this particular shade is that it’s bold enough to look like you’ve made an effort without being OTT – the perfect lazy-girl hack! It also has incredible staying power, but that does mean you need to be careful to apply correctly the first time as it doesn’t budge!” – Beth Morton

Illamasqua Beyond Lipstick, www.illamasqua.com, £20 “Upon application you could definitely tell this was a luxe cream lipstick as it has a balm consistency and left my lips feeling nourished with a noticeable shimmer. Plus, I didn’t have the typical drying of the lips, which I find some products cause. This lipstick is one to keep on you and reapply throughout the day for longevity.” – Danielle Harvey

Our experts help you navigate the new normal

FLOWERS FOREVER

Q We’ve had to postpone our wedding to winter from August. The trouble is, I wanted summery flowers for my bouquet. What are my options? Postponed weddings are a reality right now, with couples having to adapt their guest list and venue – but to change the theme is hard as its such a personal choice. Bouquets are a big part of the colour scheme and vibe of the day, so it can be heartbreaking if you can’t have what you want because you’ve had to change your date. Faux flowers are the perfect solution, and handmade, eco-friendly faux flowers are even better! Ecoblooms is a small business that crafts flowers from donated recycled plastic bottles. They never wilt or die, so

can be bought years in advance (yes, some couples are that organised). Most importantly, they are not affected by the seasons. If you want sunflowers, peonies or daisies in December, you’ve got them! I’ve supported so many couples over the past year who are dealing with this new normal – rearranging flowers to accommodate different venues or orders changing as party numbers reduce – but what they don’t have to worry about is their flowers. It’s an honour to be asked to create something for such an important moment in people’s lives, and I’m here to bring your ideas to life no matter what obstacles are thrown in the way.

DELICIOUS DISHES

Q Our wedding is now much smaller than we originally planned. How do we create an intimate feel for our wedding breakfast? All is not lost! The great thing about having a small wedding for a reduced number of guests is that you can really go to town and spoil those closest to you who are able to attend. Our grazing tablescapes present two or three courses at the table, all at the same time. This creates a really relaxed and intimate eating experience with minimal interruption from waiting staff. The grazing options look divine, and make for fabulous table displays. They can be made for any number of guests to share, so they’re very versatile if restrictions change. SMALL BUT PERFECTLY FORMED

Q We’re now planning a micro-wedding for 15 people early next year. How can we adapt our large venue to make it feel more intimate? There are key elements to focus on when turning your venue into a more cosy space for your micro-wedding: ❤ Zoning. The most effective way to make a large space feel more personal is to create separate zones throughout the day. For example, one area for your ceremony, which can be turned around for your wedding breakfast, and one for your drinks reception, which can be reworked into your evening celebration space. ❤ Styling. Why not hire some gorgeous flower walls or hang some beautiful drapes to make the area feel cosier? You could hire real trees to break up the space and add some amazing natural decor. If your venue has high ceilings, tall decorations will help to fill the empty space.

www.emmaryanphotography.co.uk

❤ Lighting. We’re talking fairylights, candles, disco balls – anything that creates a warm glow, rather than a harsh bright light that will emphasise the size of the space. ❤ Table plan. If you originally planned for multiple round tables, then one long banquet table may be a better fit for a small wedding breakfast. Not only are all your loved ones effectively sat on the top table, but it’s also a great way to fill the space without your tables looking sparse. Hayley Melling | The Oakwood at Ryther | www.oakwoodatryther.co.uk

IN-TENTS!

Q We’d love a yurt wedding, but we’ve now postponed our day to winter. Is it still possible to have our dream setting? Yurts are one of the few structures that are perfect for winter, providing a beautifully cosy atmosphere throughout the colder months. The first thing you’ll need to think about is heating. Keeping your guests warm and toasty will make the day so much more enjoyable. Our smaller yurts can hold a wood-burning stove in the middle, which not only keeps you snug, but also makes a great focal point. We can also provide specialist marquee heaters to warm up the bigger spaces. Working on a thermostat, they automatically blow in warm air if the temperature drops – don’t worry, they sit outside the structure so they don’t distract from the aesthetics. We also recommend ensuring you choose a yurt (or yurts) with plenty of space inside for all your loved ones, so no one has to stand outside during your drinks reception if the weather is bad. We also suggest the addition of hard flooring if there’s a chance the land could get boggy. Lotty Stapleton | Yorkshire Yurts | www.yorkshireyurts.co.uk 76

HEAD TO THE EAST
