When I was a kid, summer always felt like a new beginning with so much opportunity stretched out in front of you: new adventures, new friends, a chance to reinvent yourself. As an adult, you don’t always get the same feeling of excitement, but this year, I feel it again! We have accomplished a lot and have our sights on even bigger and better things. Looking to the future, I can’t help but reflect on the past and how far Interiors Chicago has come. Some of my fondest memories are of our fifth anniversary celebration, which included an insane Showhouse at the Ritz Carlton Residences with an all-star design lineup; partnering with the Design Center at the Merchandise Mart for the inspirational DreamHome; and building meaningful partnerships with DIFFA, ASID, IIDA and AIA. And of course, my personal favorite, the countless coffee chats and dinner dates with some of Chicago’s most talented designers and architects, as well as those upand-comers on the verge of a big break. Needless to say, overseeing this magazine has been a dream come true. But as they say, the only thing that is constant is change, and I was recently named the Midwest associate publisher for Modern Luxury. With my new beginning comes one for Interiors Chicago—Becca West (formerly Soske). For the last 2 1/2 years, Becca has been an incredible ad director, showing her passion for the magazine and a deep respect and understanding of the industry, and I know she will thrive in her new role as publisher. They say when you do something you love, it doesn’t feel like work, and for me, that has been true. I have been in this industry for eight years and loved every minute. I have been able to work with the best in the business in collaborating with all of you, but more importantly, I have been inspired by all of your talent and cherish the friendships I’ve made. I couldn’t be prouder of this magazine, my team and the community we have built. In the capable hands of our editor-in-chief, Andrea Mills, and Becca West, I know it’s only onward and upward. Cheers to summer and to new beginnings!

EDITOR’S NOTE

I recently spent a weekend away with family that, due to distance, I don’t get to see very often. Within minutes after welcome hugs, my 2 1/2-yearold niece grabbed my hand to show me her “room” (the hotel’s standard suite) and the special bed that was just for her. It hit the point home that our space shapes our experience and reminded me of a lecture Jean-Louis Cohen—architect and architecture historian, and professor—recently gave to members of The American Institute of Architects at the WPA showroom. Cohen is an expert in modern architecture and city planning, and the discussion was about Le Corbusier’s theories of decoration and functionalism. What stuck with me was his examination of Le Corbusier’s tiny vacation bunker, Le Cabanon, for the simplicity of the furnishings, the importance of the flow of space, the placement of the windows and mainly how the cabin shows, in Cohen’s words, “that your interior is a microcosm that shapes your view of the larger macrocosm.” Similarly, your view of the world can shape your interior. One of my favorite examples of this is the new construction by a young couple who travel extensively and incorporated elements of Moorish cultures into the style and design of their new home by Searl Lamaster Howe Architects in Evanston (“Global Access”). Since this is the annual Real Estate and Second Homes Issue, we’ve tracked down other decadent residences around the world, and right here in Chicago, that just happen to be on the market (“Destination: Second Home” and “Real Estates” respectively). As always, we bring you what’s new, notable and trending in design and seek out local talent to profile—there is an impressively huge amount of it in Chicago, and I’d love your suggestions of whom to include. Speaking of local talent, as we were wrapping up this issue, NeoCon was in full force, and I had the pleasure of talking to Luminaire owner Nasir Kassamali at one of the off-site parties. He was reminiscing about Massimo Vignelli and his philosophies, which are a guiding principle for Luminaire—a dedication to creating environments and championing product design that affects people’s lives for the better. I am pretty sure that years from now, my niece will have no idea her hotel room was a bland mix of browns and her little legs didn’t have enough room in the crib (she insisted on curling up there nonetheless), but she was so excited, it doesn’t even matter. Good design or not, that space will forever be part of her being and linked to good memories. And really, at the end of the day, any design that makes our lives better, richer and more memorable is a good one.

BATH TIME Kelly Hoppen’s collaboration with apaiser references nature. This tub is part of the aptly named Harmony collection.

Known for her star-studded clientele (David and Victoria Beckham, Madonna, and Elton John, to name a few) and projects that range from chalets to private yachts and jets to family town homes, London-based designer Kelly Hoppen recently partnered with Australia’s apaiser on a new line of bathware. The beautiful collection recently launched in the U.K. and had its debut on this side of the ocean at Maison&Objet Americas in Miami. True to Hoppen’s style, it is a sophisticated, subtle fusion of Eastern influences with a modern, Western slant incorporating neutral tones and organic shapes. Inspired by a lotus flower, the Harmony tub has a reclaimed marble core coupled with apaiser’s environmentally sustainable marble stone composite. Each piece is hand-finished and customizable, allowing designers to enhance the bathing experience. “Sensory appeal has emerged as a worldwide trend in bathrooms,” says Belinda Try, executive director of apaiser. It may sound like the setup of a joke, but artist Francis Picabia’s 1913 voyage home after attending the Armory Show, the first exhibition of modern art in the United States, inspired him to paint “Edtaonisl,” which remained in a corner of his studio until it was discovered by Marcel Duchamp in the 1940s. “Much like the composition, it is a combination of ideas and memory broken apart and reconfigured,” explains Allison Langley, a conservator at the Art Institute of Chicago, who is completing the yearlong restoration of the painting in a public display at the Art Institute of Chicago’s light-filled Morton Wing from now through September. Working in a rectangular public enclosure, Langley will use a small brush to painstakingly fill in areas of paint loss, which have been covered with white putty that is textured to match the original surface. “My goal with the treatment is to make the damages disappear so that one can appreciate Picabia’s dynamic composition and wonderfully varied paint surface,” Langley explains. “By removing the nonoriginal varnish layer, the artist’s intentional surface variations and sheen will be newly revealed.” 111 S. SUMMER STOCK Ragdale, the Lake Forest artists’ residency that is housed on the estate of Howard Van Doren Shaw, continues the tradition of building a summer outdoor performance space with the third annual Ragdale Ring competition. Chicago’s Design With Company, led by the architectural team of Stewart Hicks and Allison Newmeyer, won this year’s competition with “Shaw Town”: a structure that resembles a large-scale wooden toy box complete with oversize pillows for the audience to sit on. In early summer, their team of 11 moved to Lake Forest and lived at Ragdale for the three weeks it took to construct their vision. What was your design inspiration? SH: There’s a lot of overlap with Shaw’s exterior shapes for the pillows and also his interior

elements—like grouping things in threes—and his cutouts. We wanted to make it playful too; people will be sitting on these giant pillow buildings. It’s a big commitment to enter and win a competition. What was your motivation? AN: A design competition is a way to explore and further our work. We’re interested in the overlap between narrative and architecture, and a project like this gives us ideas that we’ll play with for years. What’s it like to see this all come together? SH: Everyone on the team has really varied backgrounds—one person is a comic book artist— and so we’re all learning as we’re doing. CELEBRATING LE CORBUSIER August commemorates the 50th anniversary of the death of Swiss-born French architect, painter, author, urban planner, designer and theorist Charles-Édouard Jeanneret-Gris. Better known as Le Corbusier, the architect’s anniversary is attracting attention around the globe—from a major exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in Paris to a lecture with French architect and history professor Jean-Louis Cohen here in Chicago. Widely known as one of the most influential architects of the 20th century, Le Corbusier, it seems, is still able to inspire rage (recent discoveries of his

writings suggest, to some, he was a Nazi sympathizer) and inspiration (his architectural theories of purism and use of steel, plate glass and reinforced concrete are hallmarks of modernism today). He connected architecture to revolution, but he also connected housing to quality of life. Professor Cohen’s presentation to American Institute of Architects members at the WPA showroom this spring connected Le Corbusier’s path to his legacy. As Cohen sums it up, “The proof of Le Corbusier’s success is the vast amount of copies still being produced today.” –AM

Last summer, Marta Calle left her bigwig post as president and chief merchant of Northbrook-based Crate & Barrel after 14 years, and a recruiter was helping her look for the Next Big Thing. It never crossed her mind that she’d stay in Chicago at a startup with some young guns. But the founders of Interior Define (interiordefine.com), a 1-year-old company that’s changing the way people shop for modern sofas, had their hearts set on Calle, who had brought style and vision to Crate & Barrel and its colorful little sister, CB2. From his home in pastoral Montana to his gallery in Chicago, Ty Best turns a spectacular range of natural materials such as wood, bronze, marble and leather into haute seating, tables, lighting and accessories. Though his signature style is honed in a peripheral locale, his work radiates zeitgeist in top showrooms across the country. His cast bronze Flint sconce, for example, has the sensibility of a drawing in space. Or, as Best puts it, the sconce is simply “French with my flavor.” His bold, sculptural work has deep interpretive currency, making his pieces akin to those of an important art acquisition. “People have to have a connection to it; the brand is not something that everyone can wrap their head around,” Best explains. Some of his latest products debuted at the recent NeoCon show in Chicago and feature new materials for the designer, such as pure cast bronze with watercolor paper from France, seen in the Flint sconce here, and burnished brass paired with marble in the stunning Calderwood console. For some homeowners, a big remodeling project can’t be over soon enough. Not so for Barbara Bernick, who loved updating her 1920s Tudor home (with the help of designer Aimee Wertepny of PROJECT Interiors) in River Forest so much that she never wanted the process to end. So, she opened Update Interiors—a shop in Oak Park that lets her pick out furniture and home accessories indefinitely. “I’d always wanted to start a business, and I thought this would be a cool way to continue my passion but not break the budget or overstuff my house,” says Bernick, who stocks an eclectic mix of items you won’t find at mainstream stores. Some of her favorites right now: chunky neoprene woven baskets from

Rome that add a pop of bright purple, cobalt blue or inky black to an otherwise neutral room; industrial-looking vintage lunchboxes and water jugs from India; and ethereal, life-size wire sculptures of humans made by the Phillips Collection. Bernick and her staff consider Update Interiors to be a small-town kind of shop—they’ll spend hours trying to track down the right coffee table for your space, free of charge—and Bernick aims for a chic but accessible vibe. “We steer clear of traditional and run-of-the-mill, but we’re not too outlandish either,” she says—just how you want the 2015 version of your gorgeous home to look. 122 N. INNER CIRCLE “Gwyneth [Paltrow] gave clear direction on the vibe they wanted for the space and left the design work to my team,” says designer Kara Mann. “The idea was to create a space that felt like a private home—we wanted visitors to feel as if theyʼd arrived at a chic friendʼs apartment and to integrate the retail element in a more organic way. It was about the culmination of all of these wonderful elements that make up a space rather than price tags,” she adds.

We were thrilled Chicago was the most popular pick and proud that the top of our city’s design and fashion industry helped make it happen. Judging by the line down Walton Street hours before the store even opened, we weren’t the only ones excited. The previously vacant (and water damaged) space was quickly transformed into a superchic “apartment” thanks to the design vision of Kara Mann and the building team at LG Construction + Development. Amanda Norcross, a graduate from SAIC with a master’s in architectural preservation, and Scott Paterek, a 20-year veteran of residential interior design, have combined their talents and opened the hottest new interiors destination in Chicago. Design zealots, rejoice; Norcross and Scott carries more than 30 different lines, and it specializes in hard-to-find Scandinavian brands such as Sne Design, of which Norcross and Scott is currently the only U.S. retailer. The pair was drawn to the magnetic vibe of Andersonville; they both have long-shopped its streets to source one-of-a-kind treasures for their own homes. “We love the neighborhood because of its vibrancy, eclecticism and go-to reputation for design, so it was a natural choice when selecting a location for our store,” says Norcross. Set in the light and airy atmosphere of the shop is furniture, lighting, art and gifts, all carefully handpicked from top-of-the-line designer collections, many of which are exclusive to Chicago. “Our common goal in opening the store was to present fresh products and designs to Chicago,

...continued designer explains. “She and her late husband weren’t interested in having a huge house, but they wanted it to feel spacious and light-filled.” Indeed, sunlight floods the living room, where a set of retractable glass doors create a 55-foot opening that frames expansive views of the sparkling blue pool and majestic mountains behind the house. “The outside is an integral part of the inside, which is a wonderful way to live,” the homeowner explains. “It makes you happy and brings you peace.” Enhancing that feeling is a quiet palette of neutral hues. In the living room, for example, a sisal rug provides a textural backdrop for a pair of custom sofas covered in linen. “She didn’t want it to be too standoffish,” Handman explains. “She wanted people to walk in and just exhale.” For the dining area, Handman continued... 62 INTERIORS SUMMER/FALL 2015

GO WITH THE FLOW From above: To create distinct seating areas in the living room, Handman designed a pair of matching sofas covered in textured linen and positioned them back-to-back. “Placing them together created more of an open plan that you can walk around,” Handman explains. A pair of glass lamps enhances the feeling of openness; the dining chairs are covered in linen and are interchangeable with those at a game table in the living room. Handman designed the built-in rift-sawn oak buffet with a honed granite top.

ROOMS WITH A VIEW From left: The en suite is enveloped in French limestone and was designed so light would stream in from both sides of the lush property. ...continued selected a Le Corbusier table with a glass top and incorporated a wall-mounted buﬀet—one of several “floating” pieces made of rift-sawn oak that Handman designed for the interior, including the vanity in the guest bathroom—and a pair of long side tables in the master bedroom. “Th is house is decorated in a way that’s very comfortable, simple and stunning,” the homeowner explains. “Shelly is so talented and creative, and he is the nicest person.”

While working on the project, Handman became so entranced by the sunshine and mountain views that he bought his own desert getaway not too far from his client’s. “I hadn’t been to Palm Springs in 15 or 20 years and still pictured Bing Crosby, Dinah Shore and that whole era, but it was so young, hip and spiritual,” Handman explains. “You’re at work, but it feels like you’re on vacation. It’s a really nice way of doing things.”

Chicago interior designer Wendy Labrum (wendylabruminteriors. com) isn’t the kind of designer who imposes her own aesthetic on a client. A style chameleon, she prides herself on designing stunning spaces tailored to her clients’ unique personalities and individual tastes. So when a friend recently asked her to recreate the vibe from the sleek and chic California home featured in The Holiday, Labrum was all in. Her client, Brennan Barthelemy, a Texas native known for her warm, laid-back personality, had recently continued...

...continued purchased a 3,500-square-foot duplex condominium in the heart of Lincoln Park. While it was not Barthelemy’s first time to the real estate rodeo, it was her first experience taking on a gut renovation. “Th is was a significant undertaking,” Barthelemy says. “The condo needed a major face-lift in a short period of time, and I travel a lot for work. I knew I needed someone to take the reins and manage the process. So I turned it over to Wendy to do everything from head to toe.” The fi rst order of business was stripping away the condo’s numerous Asian accents, which included some of the windows, redoing the millwork, and gutting the kitchen and baths. A clean slate was needed in order to reimagine the space as the sleek and airy yet laid-back comfortable home with which Barthelemy had fallen in

love with on the silver screen. With “Montecito chic” as her mantra, Labrum selected a neutral palette of whites, creams, soft grays and pale greens in beachy, textural fabrics (linen, cotton, sea grass) that created an inviting and fresh vibe. The kitchen was outfitted with soft gray cabinets, open shelving, Carrara marble countertops and oversize lanterns over the island. “Brennan is very warm and casual,” Labrum says. “She wanted an inviting kitchen where people could gather while she was cooking.” A pair of vintage Moroccan chairs from Jayson Home became the starting point for furnishing the living area. “I had this vision in my head, and when I stumbled upon the chairs, I built everything else around them,” Labrum says. ...continued in the lower-level living room (a nod to Barthelemy’s Texas roots) to the vintage Robert Longo lithograph—the exact one that hung in Amanda’s (Cameron Diaz) home in The Holiday. “I couldn’t believe she was able to find that, it was such a surprise!” Barthelemy says. Perhaps it was a good omen too because shortly after completing the home of her dreams, she met the man of her dreams, who now shares it with her. “I always envisioned sharing this space with someone,” she says. “And luckily, the decor is very neutral—he loves it!” Clearly, Barthelemy loves the fruits of Labrum’s labor as well. “When people walk into my house and ask, ‘Did you do this?’ I laugh and say, ‘Not at all!’ Every ounce of credit goes to Wendy.”

CALIFORNIA DREAMIN’ When restaurateur Patrick Cullen was envisioning Bucktown’s San Francisco Bay-inspired Presidio, he had a clear direction: “We wanted people to feel like they had just entered their friend’s cool, urban loft,” he says. Fitting, then, that he hired longtime pal and principal of Wolf Home Design, John H. Wolf, for the job. And judging from the cozycasual seating to stop-and-stare art to exposed brick walls and glam touches, we think he hit the mark. Lounge Act

Bridging the Gap Named after San Francisco’s national park, Presidio’s menu is inspired by the fresh, forwardthinking cuisine of the Bay Area. And while Cullen wanted the interior of the restaurant to embody a similar vibe, he trusted Wolf to hold subtlety in high regard. The most obvious nod to San Fran is a custom steel-framed diptych of the Golden Gate Bridge as seen from the park by California-based G. Dan Mitchell, grounded by evocative gold sconces. Custom midcentury seafoam chairs with vintage brass drawer pulls pop against an industrial Caesarstone-topped communal table, while plush oxblood velvetTeflon banquettes provide cozy seating against the dining room’s brick walls.

When it came to the lounge, Wolf ventured to balance function with style. “We wanted to create a space that was comfortable and durable but still sexy,” he says. Custom plum settees and metallic benches provide ample room for gathering, while laser-cut cold-rolled steel tables create space for casual diners. The swanky furniture is balanced by an eye-catching trio of prints by British artist Brock Elbank. “His work is so cheeky and playful—it definitely provides a talking point,” says Wolf.

“The bar chairs were really the nucleus to the rest of the design,” says Wolf, who custom-created the metal stools with up-cycled plum-dyed hide from Argentinian cows that had died from natural causes. “It’s an environmentally sensitive fabric as well as being incredibly durable and, of course, chic.”

Wolf created a “foyer” at the restaurant’s entrance by moving the pre-existing bar back by 10 feet. “It was about letting people walk in and take a moment to enjoy the space,” he says. “We want people to feel like they’ve just entered a friend’s living room.”

The number of Stanley Cup championships won by Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews. In November, Toews paid $3.5 million for a gorgeous home in Lincoln Park— trading up from a three-bedroom condo he owned in Lakeshore East. The five-bedroom, fivebath property has 6,400 square feet of space spread over four floors. There’s an elevator, and above an attached garage is a sizable deck featuring an outdoor kitchen. There have been no published reports about expanding his trophy case.

One of Logan Square’s many attributes is probably the most obvious: its architecture. According to the Chicago Architecture Foundation, Logan Boulevard is one of the best-preserved sections of the city’s boulevard system— and its historic character has proved a draw to businesses and residents alike. According to the Chicago Association of Realtors, prices for detached singlefamily homes have increased by 33 percent year to date. Even so, Logan is still relatively affordable with a median house price of $748,000. Barry Howard and his family embody the changes happening in the neighborhood now. GLOBAL ACCESS Searl Lamaster Howe Architects builds a young couple’s dream home—a unique, modern interpretation of a Mediterranean retreat inspired by their travel around the world. By Tate Gunnerson // Photography by Tony Soluri

Ten months after Nadim and Beth began dating, they embarked on a yearlong journey around the world, visiting far-flung locales such as Turkey, Egypt and Uganda, where they volunteered in an orphanage. “Make it or break it,” Nadim explains. “It felt like three or four years of dating, and it brought us very close together.” They approached the construction of their first home in Evanston’s historic district with similar abandon, signing the construction contract before their six-month long engagement. Three months into their life as newlyweds, they learned that they were expecting their first child, a daughter. “Our goal all along was to move into the new house before she arrived,” Beth recalls. “It was a race to get everything done in time.” To help them realize their vision of a modern Mediterranean home, they called upon Greg Howe of Searl Lamaster Howe Architects, who had designed Nadim’s parents’ sleek downtown apartment in the early 2000s. “The general layout is pretty much a direct development of a sketch that Nadim put together,” Howe explains. “We tend to attract clients with a really strong aesthetic who become very engaged in the project, and Beth and Nadim are the extreme of that.” Indeed, while traveling together, the couple had

discovered that they shared an appreciation for design and a similar taste in architecture. An interior courtyard in Ecuador, for example, evoked fond memories of Spain for Beth, who had lived there for two one-year stints, and reminded Nadim of his grandparents’ home in Syria. “Wherever we traveled, we saw unique architectural styles,” Beth explains. “It was so inspiring.” In turn, the house Howe designed is a pair of gable-roofed structures built around an intimate courtyard with a rustic stonewall. A corridor with a barrel ceiling connects the segments. Like the facade of the home, the hallway is stripped of ornaments, walking the line between tradition and modernity. “It’s about light, shadow and form,” Howe explains. “The visual interest comes from the play of light and dark.” On the second floor, the passageway overlooks the living area, which has 19-foot cedar ceilings and tall windows that flood the area with daylight. Its railing includes a trio of iron pieces, two of them fabricated from the original that the couple won at auction. It’s just one of a large bounty they scored that day, including Juliet balconies and a set of antique double doors from Argentina that now hang in the living room. “We felt like we won the lottery,” Beth says. “It was so exciting.” Inspired by the idea of designing her own home, Beth took the lead on the interior design. For the open kitchen, she worked with Howe to select modern Italian kitchen cabinets in a similar hue to the contemporary porcelain flooring in the adjacent living area. The modern elements coexist peacefully with an antique Persian rug and a Chesterfield sofa, thanks to a palette of white and cool blues that unites them. “It’s a quiet backdrop that lets the architecture speak for itself,” Beth explains.

A custom bookcase includes a bench for extra seating and a place to display souvenirs from the couples’ global treks. “There’s a story behind every detail in this house,” Nadim explains, pointing to a large brass-and-crystal chandelier illuminating an intimate seating area in front of a custom limestone fireplace that Howe designed. The ornate piece is one of a trio of fixtures in the house that came from his grandparents’ home in Lebanon. “Having these kinds of meaningful things is what makes this a home,” Nadim explains. Not to mention their 8-month-old daughter, Lola, who was born just two weeks before they moved in. The new family recently hosted friends with a daughter the same age for an afternoon of food, conversation and salsa dancing by the outdoor fireplace. They are quick to give credit to the entire design team for the success of the project. “Greg was the deciding factor whenever we had a disagreement, and he really cared about making us happy,” Beth explains. “We use and love every part of this house.”

LARGER THAN LIFE Texas transplants embrace city life with a new home base in the Gold Coast—a condo reimagined by Sarah Whit Interior Design. By Amalie Drury Photography by Tony Soluri

Step one: Give away all of your furniture. It was an inevitable part of the process when Ana and Patrick McCauley gave up suburban life in Houston to follow Patrick’s executive pharmaceutical career path to Chicago. And none of their Texas-size sofas or tables, it turned out, would be able to come along. The couple initially thought of looking for a suburban Chicago home similar to their Houston spread, but after a stint in temporary corporate housing in River North, they decided to give city life a whirl. “I loved being able to walk everywhere and not have the need for a car,” says Ana. “The energy of being outside with so many people—we really liked that.” They found a nicely sized condo—four units combined by a previous owner—in the Gold Coast, a neighborhood they gravitated toward for its leafy, established character. “This place was the only one we saw that felt homey,” says 93 INTERIORS SUMMER/FALL 2015

Patrick, who disliked many of the linear, front-to-back floor plans they toured. “It’s a big U shape, so it has a great flow for entertaining and hosting guests.” (Ana and Pat are both from families of seven siblings; nieces and nephews abound.) With four bedrooms and clocking in at roughly 3,500 square feet, the condo was large, but scale is relative when you’re living in a high-rise for the first time. Their old dining room table, for instance, wouldn’t fit into the elevator at the new place, so they had it cut in half and reassembled upstairs. Still, the table felt too massive. They needed to start fresh, with decor to match their new lifestyle, so the McCauleys turned to Sarah Vaile and Hayley O’Hara of Chicago-based Sarah Whit Interior Design. “We interviewed six or seven diﬀerent designers, and Sarah really took the time to listen and get a sense for our taste,” says Patrick. “She made us feel like we were her only client.” Vaile and O’Hara took stock of the space, the bones of which had been tastefully updated by its prior occupants. “We came in for the fun part, which was to give it a personality,” says Vaile. “We decided to go for a classic city feel with a clean palette that wouldn’t compete with the expansive views of Lake Michigan. Ana and Patrick gave us an empty canvas and invited us to bring our most exciting ideas.” The designers focused on black and white, then layered in pops of color and exotic accents that hinted at Ana’s Latin American roots. Their inspirational starting point was a Mongolian print that covers a bench in the foyer; it was bright and worldly, and it reminded them of a beautiful Hermès scarf.

ROUND TABLE After many unsuccessful attempts at finding the right dining room table for the space, Vaile and O’Hara had one customized with a hand-painted design that subtly references the Asian inﬂuence of the colorful upholstery on the chairs. 94

BAR NONE Previously a children’s room that was a result of combining units, the cozy man cave features a full bar, two TVs, custom hide stools and vintage football photos from Patrick’s alma mater.

A space that had previously been a children’s playroom is now Patrick’s “man lounge,” complete with a custom wooden bar; a clubby chestnut leather banquette; multiple TV screens for game-watching; and walls filled with vintage football photos celebrating his alma mater, Notre Dame. In the living room, a black-and-white wool-and-silk rug features a striking geometric pattern designed by Vaile, O’Hara and their clients specifically for the project. Black wainscoting was added to play up the drama of a 15-foot-long hallway, and piles of pillows in contrasting prints have turned the home’s low rectangular radiators into inviting window seats. The McCauleys thought they’d miss their Lone Star amenities—the big house, the yard—but Ana says they feel comfortable and happy here. “I always say I was born near the equator for a reason, but being in this location and having a home that captures our spirit has made me love Chicago,” says Ana. “Our life is completely diﬀerent than it was in Texas, but Sarah and Hayley made the transition so seamless. There were zero challenges. When we met, we clicked.”

Close to Home A brother-sister duo give a historic address a modern-day makeover that doesn’t sacrifice an ounce of its timeless beauty and splendor. By Rebecca Taras

When you move into an iconic structure like the Palmolive Building, one thing’s for certain: An ordinary living space simply won’t do. The former Playboy Building is dripping with classic elegance, so it was just natural that resident Christopher Taylor chose to incorporate that same grandeur into his new abode. “I specifically liked the art deco influences in the units—the millwork, window casings, fireplaces and more traditional floor plans,” explains Christopher. “I looked at a few buildings in the area, but none could compare to a historic landmark with modernized 98 INTERIORS SUMMER/FALL 2015

technology and infrastructure that is managed by a firstclass building staff—it’s a little piece of Manhattan’s Upper East Side in the heart of the Gold Coast.” The managing director for a leveraged finance firm didn’t have to look far to find the perfect person to transform the 2,400-square-foot unit into the relaxed yet refined home of his dreams. Christopher’s sister, Kate Taylor, owns a full-service design firm—Kate Taylor Interiors—so it was a match made in heaven. Family ties aside, Christopher loves the sense of uniqueness that Kate puts into each of her projects. “My vision for the home was to create a sophisticated and comfortable space with subtle references to the history of the Palmolive Building and the art deco design of the building,” says Christopher. “Kate executed that vision flawlessly and brought it to life.” Of course, perfection didn’t happen overnight. It took six months to transform the two-bedroom, 2 1/2-bath condo into home sweet home. Thankfully, the space already 101 INTERIORS SUMMER/FALL 2015

had great bones, so there was no need for any remodeling. “The focus of this project was more about design and decoration,” says Kate. “We added new furnishings, paint, wallcoverings and lighting throughout, as well as some new cabinetry and moderate updates to the kitchen and baths.” But don’t mistake new with trendy. Kate prefers to stay true to classic and timeless designs, which in this case were showcased via brass accents, a cool gray color palette and tasteful fabrics. “We really highlighted Christopher’s highend tastes with the textiles used throughout the home— custom drapery, custom upholstery, throw blankets and pillows,” says Kate. “We incorporated a lot of pure cashmere, wool, silk and linen that added texture,” she adds. With the use of Loro Piana fabrics from Italy, Kate also custom-designed the chairs in the dining room that, according to Christopher, have proven to be conversation starters. But the designer’s philosophy on furnishings isn’t all

about reinventing the wheel. “In any space, I like to combine high and low, old and new,” explains Kate. So, think everything from Restoration Hardware to Mecox Gardens to Chicago Upholstery & Drapery Co., with the ultimate goal being quality finishes and materials without being stuffy. Of course, personal touches also played an important role. “I travel quite a bit for work and pleasure, so it felt appropriate to integrate that part of my life into the look and feel of my home,” says Christopher. “There are a few pieces in my home—such as a framed list of London Underground stations—that represent my time studying abroad while bringing back a lot of good memories.” Architectural details like herringbone floors and fine millwork make for the ultimate sophisticated bachelor pad, and one of the places Christopher spends most of his time is the study that previously served as a bedroom. “Kate did an excellent job turning the space into a really comfortable environment, complete with a soft leather sofa and lounge chair upholstered in Loro Piana fabric, great lighting accents and a plush area rug,” says Christopher. “All of these elements helped to create a very casual and inviting space, not only for me, but also for entertaining friends and family.” Speaking of entertaining, Christopher is not selfish with those sweeping views of Michigan Avenue and is known to host an extravagant Mag Mile holiday parade party. Rooms with a view? In spades.

DINNER PARTY The dining room offers sweeping views of the city skyline through floor-toceiling windows dressed with custom drapery and blinds. “I discovered Loro Piana working at Nate Berkus Associates,” says Kate. “They started more than 100 years ago as an apparel company and are famous for their wool and cashmere—the best of the best when it comes to textiles,” she adds. Kate had the hardwood floors stained and refinished to suit her brother’s refined, masculine taste.

In just four years, the New York-based Egg Collective design studio has hit its stride, snapping up design accolades (including a spot on the 2014 Forbes magazine “30 Under 30” list) such as the inaugural American Design Honors award. The prize is in recognition of emerging talent, after the internationally flavored WantedDesign exhibit that coincided with the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York this past May. Known for its crisp, clean aesthetic; pure forms; and craftsmanship, the company’s girl-power principals, Stephanie Beamer, Crystal Ellis and Hillary Petrie, come from art, architecture and woodworking backgrounds. “We’re inspired by modern artists, Shaker furniture and nature,” says Petrie. “Materials that have a life tell a story,” adds Beamer. One of their latest pieces, the Russell table, is a modern hybrid of farm and work table, and the Densen dining chair’s hide seat was inspired by a World War II backpack. ITALIAN MASTERS The stunning renovation of the grande dame Excelsior Hotel Gallia deﬁnes the connection—quite literally—between Milan’s old and new design zeitgeist. By Patti Dickey

Neighbor to a gleaming modern skyscraper, sporting a glistening new wing and located directly across from Milan’s iconic train station, Milano Centrale (modeled after Washington, D.C.’s Union Station, and a magnificent structure in its own right), Excelsior Hotel Gallia, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Milan is nestled on its own tree-lined drive in the heart of the Porta Nuova district. Known as Palace Gallia when it made its debut in 1932, the hotel was closed for an extensive multimillion-dollar renovation that took four years to complete. Recently unveiled to the traveling public, the end result is a seamless marriage of the elegant belle epoque style of the original hotel and the stunning sleekness of 21st century design cues in the modern wing. The renovation was led by acclaimed designer and Triennale di Milano favorite Marco Piva and overseen by General Manager Marco Olivier. “This project pays homage to the city of Milan and offers travelers from all around the world a special venue that integrates and enhances the values of architecture, design and fashion,” Piva explains. As you enter through the impressive facade, the lobby evokes an elegant mixture of old and new. Piva kept the original, magnificent staircase that spans eight stories, but now it is enhanced by a lighting masterpiece that spills down almost the entire eight-story span. Designed by De Majo, an innovator in Italian glasswork since 1947, this impressive 98-foot-high Murano glass chandelier forms a stunning waterfall of 180 light cylinders that bathe the staircase in a rich, dramatic glow. ...continued enhances the ambience of elegant, understated glamour. The overall lobby redesign is subtle, however, with no one element going over the top. Also, as a nod to the old, Piva kept two of the original marble lobby columns, which now grace the top of the exquisite brown granite steps (with tiles from B&B Italia) leading from the lobby into the more intimate spaces of the hotel. Again, lighting in these areas is stunning and serves to highlight the enveloping sensory experience of the hotel redesign. In addition, the air is scented with the delicate fragrance of fleur d’oranger. The aroma helps lull you into the proper sense of serenity and security. “This sparkling hotel is set to be a new destination authority in Milan by delivering indigenous experiences and exceptional service,” Olivier says. Public areas are specifically arranged to facilitate intimate conversation, and Miami’s Luxury Living Group, one of the hotel’s interior partners, selected furnishings from Fendi Casa for the most prominent public areas of the hotel. Additional elegant details, featuring aluminum, marble and art decoinspired etched glass, were sourced from B&B Italia. All the decor objects infuse the public spaces with a feeling of Milanese elegance from another, more elegant era—yet they all carry a distinctly modern vibe as befits the old-meets-new renovation’s intent. “I wanted to create the place that is linked to Milan’s history of excellence, a special venue that serves a distinct class of welcome and refined hospitality,” Piva says. The hotel’s library is a quiet, serene, art- and book-filled space located adjacent to a “living room” area, artfully creating a roomwithin-a-room. The low-key cigar room beckons for a fine brandy and cigar after dinner. Books are scattered everywhere throughout the hotel, both in public and private spaces—a warm gesture, perfect for a moment’s rest with a good read. The original, fully restored belle epoque structure is connected to the new adjacent modern structure (which features an exterior wall of glass and steel that, by design, resembles a flowing curtain) by a grand 328-foot promenade featuring small boutique windows displaying the wares of fashion designers like Valentino, Dior and Ermenegildo Zegna from Via Monte Napoleone, the heart of the Milanese fashion district. Along the way, visitors experience a smooth transition from classic stone to glass-sheathed modern.

The idea behind this marriage of styles is simple—celebrate classic Milan with the vibrant and new Milan. The best of both worlds is successfully melded into one coherent structure. The columns in this new structure, the lobby level of which is dedicated to meeting areas, are massive, gold and crisscrossed with light. The spaces in the new building are large, airy and drenched with light that’s a heady combination of natural and cast by the beautifully designed chandeliers. Appropriately, furnishings here tend to have a more contemporary vibe. Similarly, guest rooms in the new section sport a cutting-edge design without sacrificing the comfort expected from a Starwood Luxury Collection property, the hotel’s parent company. Throughout both the original and new structures, Piva designed and curated the artwork with overall continuity in mind. The result is in an original collection of over 500 paintings, photographs and sculptures that are exclusive to the hotel, which are scattered throughout the public spaces and found in each guest room. One-of-a-kind pieces for the guest rooms were created by Poltrona Frau, one of Italy’s leading luxury furniture-makers. In addition, the room interiors feature still more objects designed specifically for the hotel by artisans primarily from Milan. As in the whole hotel, lighting in the guest rooms receives special attention: The fabulous chandeliers here were specially commissioned and produced by Zonca Illuminazione for Piva’s own Meneghina lamp collection. The table lamps, which so elegantly complete the sumptuous rooms, were manufactured by Flos. Overall interior design of the guest rooms and the corridors was provided by Cassina—a magnificent effort that addresses every detail you’d expect to be associated with personal luxury. The design details will delight the casual observer and bring joy to the discerning design fan to boot. Whatever delight the renovation brings to the eye, comfort is neither compromised nor sacrificed in Piva’s continued... 108

Breakfast is served in Gallia Restaurant, an elegant and open space that features yet another spectacular chandelier, this one from B&B Italia. Between the numerous buffet tables featuring all sorts of cereal, pastries, oatmeal and breakfast meats; and the cooking stations for eggs, pancakes and waffles, there’s something for everyone. Casually sophisticated, Gallia Restaurant is also open for lunch and dinner, with a focus on Mediterranean cuisine. The lobby-level Gallia Lounge and Bar beckons for coffee, light lunches and a relaxing afternoon tea with delectably handmade pastries. On the lower level, The Wine Cellar features two connected event spaces—the lounge offers convivial wine tastings and dining experiences, while the more intimate cooking station hosts chefled cooking classes in a sleek and sophisticated venue, perfect for a small luncheon. Top dining accolades, however, go to the Terrazza Gallia and Terrazza Gallia Bar, which will open in September. The design is a contemporary reinterpretation of the 1930s art deco style. The menu is Italian, and the food will be divine. The patio offers breathtaking views of Milan’s cityscape. Comfortable sofas promote downtime with deep and comfortable seating. It seems all of Milan has recently fallen in love with rooftop dining, and this addition will no doubt quickly become a hot spot for Milan’s elite (Margherita Missoni has already hosted a party at the site). The seating inside is eclectic, decadent and

sumptuous, highlighted by 27 custom-made chandeliers by traditional blown-glassmaker La Murrina. After a night on the rooftop, a morning trip to the gorgeous new Shiseido Spa Milan is a must. Spanning two levels of indulgence and luxury, the sanctuary is not only Milan’s largest, but also Shiseido’s first in Italy. You know you are in expert hands when you choose a treatment from the impressive menu of beauty and wellness services. There’s a hair salon, barbershop, nail salon, serene indoor pool with an outdoor sundeck, and fitness center with state-of-the-art equipment from Artis by Technogym and a trainer to help amp up your workout. The far-reaching renovations extended to 235 luxurious guest rooms (12 of which are handicap-accessible), including 53 suites. One of those new accommodations, the Katara Suite, is located on the seventh floor and boasts its own elevator and private spa. The other signature suite at the Excelsior Hotel Gallia is the twobedroom Gallia Suite, located on the fifth floor. Designed as a sophisticated private residence, this suite features a beautiful loggia with historical columns and Carrara marble statues leading to an eye-popping piazza view. The remaining suites are grouped into five different themes. Design Suites (five dedicated to renowned Milanese designers and architects) commemorate Vico Magistretti, Achille Castiglioni, Gio Ponti, Luigi Caccia Dominioni and Franco Albini with rooms that contain some of their most iconic creations. Art Suites are located in the modern part of the hotel and feature a sliding panel that highlights the historic facade of the original building. Atelier Suites are designed to recall the mood of Milan’s creative fashion workshops and are located in the original building. Fun Signature Suites are like residential art galleries that make very theatrical use of illumination, colors and artwork. Finally, Executive Suites evoke the feel of contemporary Milanese lofts. While Pilsen might once have been a place you avoided after sundown, it’s no secret that the Lower West Side neighborhood is quickly joining the ranks of cool places to hang—by day and night. Proof? The old adage that if you follow the artists, you find the trends holds true: From Hebru Brantley to organic tacos and cold-pressed juices to sprawling murals and coworking lofts, longtime Chicagoans would be hard-pressed to find reminders of the once grungy neighborhood. Here, we uncover the places and spaces that are making Pilsen your hip new hangout.

THREE’S COMPANY

Dusek’s, Thalia Hall and Punch House 1227 W. 18th St.

There’s no need to travel all over the city to have an epic night on the town. In fact, we say the corner of 18th and Allport streets is the perfect trifecta of eating, drinking and entertainment. Housed in a landmark building steeped in history, Thalia Hall was originally founded in 1892 by a man named John Dusek. Grab a microbrew and a bite (pastrami spiced fluke, anyone?) from Michelin-starred chef Jared Wentworth at Dusek’s restaurant, then head upstairs to the lovingly restored venue, Thalia Hall—modeled after the Prague opera house—for a little music, commentary or comedy. Then finish the night off in the 1970s-inspired basement for a thumping scene complete with boozy concoctions served in vintage punch cups at Punch House. For a dose of healthy the next morning, grab a cold-pressed juice from Belli’s Juicebar.

One of the pioneers of Pilsen, Modern Cooperative is a design destination without any attitude. Born of a love of midcenturymodern furniture and a mantra of reclaiming and repurposing, the gallery like space owned by Tiffany Paige and Mike Biersma is stocked with a mix of vintage Danish furniture, modern Scandinavianinspired accessories and a welledited selection of pieces by more than 100 local artists. Since Paige and Biersma opened the space in 2013, they have expanded it to include two streetfront properties, a sale basement and a workshop space where they host events and classes with their roster of artists.

The first time we met Phillip Foss he was in stiff chef whites dishing out fancy food at the Palmer House Hilton’s Lockwood. The next time he was selling us one of his tasty meatball sandwiches off his MeatyBalls truck. These days Foss is the brains behind EL Ideas, an off-the-beaten-path BYOB restaurant in Douglas Park just west of PIlsen that features some of the city’s most creative food. (Don’t just take our word for it—the restaurant has earned a Michelin star.) Foss is nothing if not versatile. At EL Ideas, the passionate Foss taps into his classical culinary training and a ton of imagination for the 13-course menu, which ranges from the traditional (lamb with fiddlehead ferns) to the inventive (french fries and ice cream) to the downright wacky “culinary cocaine,” a mix of dehydrated coconut and lime. Israeli developer Ofer Mizrahi has transformed 100,000 square feet of an adapted warehouse into an urban oasis with a top-fl ight restaurant; a European-style coﬀee house and wine bar; and a gated courtyard dotted with palms, rainbow eucalyptus and pop-art sculptures. Modern oﬀerings centered on architectural and sculptural form, and included pieces from Chicago’s Casey Lurie, who was honored as one of the show’s rising talents. There was an artsy vibe as well and even a hint of baroque, with cool and glam lighting using Venetian glass from La Murrina. Celeb-spotting highlights were Kelly Hoppen, Karim Rashid, David Rockwell, Paola Navone and the designer of the year, Zanini de Zanine, who were all at on-site presentations. Philippe Brocart, managing director of the show, which is celebrating its 20th year, explains the

The Swiss brand Laufen, known for innovative bath style, chose the spot as its new North American headquarters after its director of marketing, Marc Viardot, met Mizrahi at the shows in London and Belgrade, Serbia. The Laufen showroom features a Konstantin Grcic and Toan Nguyen installation transplanted from Salone del Mobile, that spotlights their sinks in the slim revolutionary material called SaphirKeramik. With a mixed-use building by London-based architect Ron Arad on the docket in 2016, Mizrahi feels the future is bright. “The power of this place is the energy. The big gate is like an old city. Ty Tabing wasn’t planning to get the job. He was visiting Chicago on a brief vacation last August, recharging from two years in Singapore where he’d been spearheading a new business district along the city’s central river. “A friend of mine, who is close to the mayor, said she was going to take it upon herself to find me a job before I left town,” he says. “And lo and behold, she did. By the time I left, I had an interview. By the time I was home, I had an offer.” The gig was as the executive director of the inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial, which will open Oct. 3 and run through Jan. 3. The Biennial promises to be North America’s largest survey of international architecture, and despite Tabing’s serendipitous recruitment, he couldn’t be a better fit for the role. Before Singapore, Tabing spent 15 years developing Chicago’s infrastructure. He served as a Chicago city planner for seven years, after which time he worked at the Chicago Loop Alliance for eight more, convincing businesses like Boeing to set up their headquarters downtown, and launching the short-lived but vastly successful Looptopia fair. The Biennial will be the first exhibit in history to take over the entire 50,000 square feet of the Chicago Cultural Center, with interactive features like an $8,000 house hailing from Mexico built right inside for visitors to tour. But it’s the 63 partnerships and more permanent possibilities occurring across the city that Tabing seems most excited about. His legacy will be the result of a competition to remake the Chicago Park District’s lakefront kiosks—what he describes as the “shabby concession stands” selling soda and hot dogs during the summer months. One new stand will be picked from international entries, and three others will be created by local architecture programs: The Illinois Institute of Technology, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Illinois at Chicago. That’s only four kiosks to start, but longer term, Tabing would like to leverage the Biennial to update all 40 of these buildings along the lake. “It’s really about bringing architecture and design to an area that’s devoid of architecture and design,” he says. “The upgrade will allow a greater sense of place. It will make people want to linger along the lakefront.”
