The Banks - Masterplanned Residential Subdivision, Wellington, $30m, July 2008 - Ongoing Cardno Landscape Architects were instrumental in delivering the vision for Duck Creek’s Comprehensive Development Plan, a key document which enabled the high profile Master Planned Residential Subdivision to gain unchallenged resource consents through a publicly notified process and to begin construction on schedule. The “Duck Creek” project will enable approximately 320 homes to be constructed alongside the waterway of the same name in Porirua City’s hill suburb of Whitby. Master Planning for the project was a joint effort between the land owner, Porirua City Council and the local community.

LANDSCAPE CONCEPT INTENT The intent of the landscape concept for Whitby Costal Estates "Duck Creek Streamside Sections" is to develop sustainable high quality riparian environments along the length of Duck Creek that creates a variety of passive recreation facilities for the community along with sound ecological habitats for local wildlife. It is also intended that the upgrade of the creek environment and surrounding reserve areas will integrate into the greater Whitby pedestrian walkway systems and reserves enhancing the natural beauty and character of the region.

JAMES COOK DRIVE

Along a portion of Duck Creek a 3m wide pedestrian walkway/cycleway is to be installed. This walkway will provide opportunities to get close to the creek itself and is proposed to have seating areas included at key locations. It is also proposed that entry/exit points will be restricted to pedestrian and cyclists only access by the use of bollards and appropriate barriers along with the addition of lighting bollards to provide a measure of safety for nighttime use.

E

The creek itself has been designed to guarantee fish passage and create a series of diverse habitats with a series of pools and run/riffle areas. The development of an attractive riparian canopy of native trees which provide shade and shelter along Duck Creek will help to create a habitat that is more conducive for aquatic and bird species to inhabit this area. Low maintenance plant species which have fast growth rates that will aid in reducing soil erosion along the creek corridor have been chosen. It is proposed that a phased system of planting is to be undertaken over approximately an eight (8) year period to create the final desired native forest canopy environment along the streamside zone. The wetland pond areas which treat stormwater, reducing sediment and other elements from entering the creek system, will be screened by native planting and include other native planting of rushes and sedges that will aid in improving water quality.

Constructed Wetlands The negotiated outcome provides a central spine linkage along the majority of Duck Creek, and involves stream restorative works to create a native riparian habitat and passive recreation facilities. Cardno Landscape architects worked closely with ecologists, planners and engineers to design the most natural creek environment possible and a community resource with fantastic amenity value. I was involved with this project when I first joined Cardno in 2013, with my responsibilities including the detailed design of the streetscape and the riparian corridor which complement each other and provide a relevant sense of space and place for residents. Key environmental issues such as flooding have been addressed and innovative methods for stormwater treatment and floodwater management have been implemented, thereby improving the water quality entering the nationally significant Pauatahanui Inlet arm of Porirua Harbour.

Photos of The Banks in construction and completed

I was instrumental in the design of the stormwater wetland ponds, alongside the civil engineering team and provided a point of difference to the usual stormwater retention basins. By re-contouring the ‘engineered’ basins into natural slopes and curves, Cardno was able to deliver bio-filtration wetlands that also provided a habitat for eels and fish through ecological planting and design. I provided on-site construction supervision to ensure a natural looking result.

Pinot Grove Recreation Reserve Martinborough, Wairarapa, 2013

Pinot Grove

Once complete, Pinot Grove subdivision will see approximately 100 new homes built in the heart of Martinborough. Landscaped with formal Mediterranean styled hedges, mature trees and gardens, Pinot Grove has been designed by Cardno’s Landscape Architects to offer easy care living in a stylish, private environment. Specifically designed as a boutique subdivision no cost has been spared and everything from the street surface treatments to the landscaping has been designed to the highest quality - including the installation of over $600,000 worth of trees, boundary hedging and other shrubs to add to property values and enhance residents private outdoor living. I was involved in the conceptual and detailed streetscape design of the entire subdivision, lot layout design and the recreation reserve design. A key feature of the development is the Recreation Reserve which will not only provide an aesthetically pleasing amenity space for the residents of the subdivision, but will also further increase the values of the surrounding properties. Design elements that have been incorporated into the reserve include a heated swimming pool, summer pavilion, tennis court, petanque court, playground and BBQ area, several shade structures, accent lighting and water features. This project was delivered within budgets and on programme.

Spring Farms Eastern Village - Entry Design, West Sydney, $200,000 August 2014 The Eastern Village is the latest stage of the 700 home, $80 million master planned community to be released in Camden, Sydney’s West. Cardno’s Landscape Architects were consulted to provide concepts for the entry design to the Eastern Village and to develop feature acoustic walls that would frame the project and reduce the amount of traffic noise coming into the community from Liz Kernohan Drive.

Spring Farm

I was involved in this project from the concept stage while working in Cardno’s Australian offices on secondment. Concept and detailed landscape plans needed to address colours, decorative finishes, nodal areas as well as soft landscaping and planting. Landscape concepts for the entrance and feature walls took cues from existing built structures, colours and patterns within the community. I created multiple quick 3D concepts within SketchUp, which were presented to the client who chose different elements they preferred from each. Key design features included the laser cut corten steel sculptures, which are to be strategically placed around the entrance to the Eastern Village to add impact. Striking grasses are to be planted which will tie in with the colours and patterns of the corten sculptures and the patterns on the feature acoustic walls. A detailed costing was conducted and the chosen concepts developed within the projects $200,000 budget. Upon approval of the design, detailed construction drawings have been competed that are ready for tender and construction. Cardno will take the project to completion, monitoring the install and maintenance.

Retirement Village

Whitby Retirement Village Porirua, Wellington, $1m, 2012 - Ongoing Whitby Retirement Village was expanding, incorporating a number of new houses and apartment buildings into its village setting. Cardno was consulted to provide the landscape design for within the new and existing village community areas, provide a new pathway network and design a vegetation buffer to comply with consent conditions on the publicly opposed new apartment high blocks.

Whitby Lakes

The development of Whitby Retirement Village and the landscape design took into consideration the growing number of residents and their particular usage needs, access and views to the lake and neighbouring shopping mall, as well as providing visual amenity for the surrounding community.

Concept Section of Entrance Gate

View corridors to the lake within the village were highlighted and accentuated by exotic vegetation, consistent with the surrounding Whitby area, which provided stimulating foliage and colours for the residents and promotes bird life. A pedestrian circulation network was a key design feature and created a safe environment for both residents and visitors. I was involved with the concept design of this project, working closely with the architects to provide beautiful gardens for the residents, while also creating vegetation buffers from the exterior of the site. This project ended up being opposed by local residents and business owners due to the size of the expansion and towering heights of the apartment buildings within a fairly residential area. I was asked to provide expert evidence at the council hearing on the landscape matters while also providing a visual landscape assessment for the proposed designs. The design was approved and construction began shortly after.

Whakatu Landscape Plan and Awa Enhancement Hawkes Bay, New Zealand - 2015

Whakatu River Enhancement Walkway

The community of Whakatu in Hastings, New Zealand, along with the local district council, wanted a conceptual plan for the Whakatu River that enhanced its ecological and cultural qualities, while providing public spaces for the community to use. I was involved with this project from the start and while attending meetings with council and community members, a concept was developed that enhanced the existing ecology and incorporated the existing site uses, infrastructure and historical cultural sites. Creating a community vegetable garden was an important part of the proposal as historically this was a food collection site. A conceptual plan was developed and presented at a community consultation with success. A detailed plan is now being developed after my departure from Cardno.

Whakatu Enhancement Plan

Lake Illawara Boardwalk and Foreshore Park Wollongong, NSW, Australia - 2013

Joe’s Bay Foreshore Park

I was given the sole lead on this project which was for the Lake Illawara District Council. A proposal was needed to present to a community consultation that showed the integration of two boardwalk design options along the lakes edge, into a new foreshore park on Lake Illawara in front of existing residential houses. The design intent was to create this integration while also allowing public access to the water and surrounding amenities. An ecological seawall was designed to create terraces from the park edge down into the Lake. These terraces allowed for natural growth of marine life and vegetation, while creating a natural edge condition. A viewing platform along the water’s edge provided the public with spaces to sit, connect to the water, and to launch kayaks. From the viewing platform, a pathway connects the public to a walkway through to Lakeview Parade. The planting design allowed for open loose spaces, while providing screening for the existing residents along the parks edge.

Cordeaux Road Cordeaux Road Shared Pathway Development NSW, Australia, $5.6m - 2014, $5.6m The $5.6 million project involved 1.25km of road widening and realignment, replacement of an existing vehicle bridge, construction of a 2.5m wide shared pathway, extensive mitigation and restoration planting as well as careful consideration of surface finishes and landscape treatments appropriate for the highly historical area of Mount Kembla.

Landscape plans and specifications were prepared to satisfy the intent of the design brief as well as allow tender and construction of the works. It was essential that the history and character of the Mt Kembla village was expressed and maintained in the finishes and materials of the shared path. A Vegetation Management Plan was essential for detailing how the existing vegetation would be removed, replaced and/or retained during and after construction of the shared pathway.

Involved from the very outset of the project Cardno’s Landscape Architects were consulted to help determine the best approach for the design. From the initial consultation with the client, Wollongong City Council, it was obvious the proposed shared pathway would prove challenging given the topography of the area, constraints of the existing property boundaries, and close proximity of the American Creek channel and associated flood levels.

Graphics and 3D Visualisations Two months after starting at Cardno, I was given the opportunity to manage the Cardno inter-business unit visualisations. Cardno’s Wellington Business Unit Manager saw the opportunity to utilise my graphical skills and market them to Australia’s Cardno Business Units as a more affordable and efficient option to their existing outsourced graphical designers. My responsibilities included communicating with a number of Cardno Project Managers in different cities across Australia, organising and delegating visualisations to effectively coordinate inputs to achieve a high quality result on time and within budget.
