INSTITUTIONAL DESIGN | University of Graz Satellite Campus The NEXT University is a satellite campus, located in Norfolk, Virginia, for the Environmental Studies Department of the University of Graz, Austria. It is hoped that this environment, so radically different from its landlocked European home country, will begin to engage student learning in different ways. The design of this building addresses the physical, emotional and psychological, as well as the genereal cultural characteristics of the Austrian students. The functional elements of the space draw on the Austrian desire to compartmentalize their lives and are clearly identifiable by changes in flooring materials and ceiling heights, among other things. According to the Person-Environment Fit Theory, giving students visual reminders of familiar surroundings increases the likelihood of them performing at their peak.

COMMERCIAL DESIGN Soundroom

COMMERCIAL DESIGN | Soundroom Flamenco is a popular Spanish style of music and dance that is characteristically high-spirited and meant to be an impromtu display of passionate emotion. A music studio located in Madrid, Spain, the Soundroom was inspired by the unpredictable movement in the multi-tiered rues of the Flamenco dress. The staircase acts as the grounding element from which all 3 studios, curved walls and ceilings emanate.

RESIDENTIAL DESIGN | Mobile Domicile
The Mobile Domicile was an opportunity to fully design the interior space of a 140 square foot RV with 9’-6” ceilings. The client planned on living full-time in the unit and requested a full bath, kitchen, living/dining/work area, a private bedroom and plenty of storage. A kangaroo pouch was the primary inspiration behind the design which came from the client’s plan of traveling the Australian continent and her preference for feeling ‘cozy.’

RESIDENTIAL DESIGN | Mobile Domicile
The Mobile Domicile created a space for its owner that is as functional as it is visually appealing. Its diminutive size created a multitude of challenges, including needing adequate and efficient storage that would not be obtrusive as well as designing a space that felt cozy without being cramped. A 360 degree rotating wall with a mounted flatscreen affords the client the option of viewing the TV in both the private bedroom loft and the public living area without requiring a second television. Due to the clients desire for a spacious bathroom, it is the only area that makes use of the the full 9’-6” ceiling.

The following 3 diagrams are part of a series in which various elements of architecture were studied in an eort to better understand design intentions of castles inhabited in Tudor England. The results will be applied to a project currently in progress as inspiration for circulation, space planning, and other relavant aspects of design. RAGLAM CASTLE PLAN

SKETCHING, PHOTOGRAPHY & DRAFTING| Barcelona Pavilion Study
The building site was speciďŹ cally chosen by Mies van der Rohe because it allowed the structure to be viewed in a multitude of ways. He designed the building in such a way as to prevent visitors from simply transversing the site but rather forcing them to enter the building and experiencing all aspects of the design. Mies van der Rohe positioned each element of the design on either a horizontal or vertical plane. What ďŹ rst appears to be a random placement of both stone and glass walls, upon further inspection can be understood as a deliberate interruption of the expected circulation using a grid as an organization method. This technique was often employed by Mies in order to create distinct spaces and to direct visitors through the building. Also memorable was his use of striking stone materials such as Golden Onyx and Verde Antico Marble from Tinos Greece.
