Fenom
Proposal
For senior show, the designer plans to create a unique publication inspired by the poem Phenomenal Woman by Maya Angelou. The publication would take the form of a magazine, showcasing five women personally known by the designer. The magazine will be called Fenom and will start with a forward where the poem will be displayed. Each of the five women showcased will receive two spreads, a total of four pages each, where they will be shown through photographs taken by the designer. The designer will also conduct interviews with each woman and showcase the best responses in the form of an article. The designer hopes to create a cohesive magazine that celebrates powerful women who have been formitive in her life. For inspiration, the designer will look back on 20 and 21st century magazine design, drawing from creatives like Alexey Brodovitch. The research portion of the project would be based on Brodovitch, as well as one or two other artists the designer decides to use in the style of the magazine.
Artist’s Brief As a girl who has always “marched to the beat of her own drum,” I’ve never had a problem garnering attention, and neither does my design. Through a strong marriage of photography, typography, and form, I create bold design guaranteed to catch the eye and leave a lasting impression.
Gallery Plan In the gallery space for Fenom, there will be a display of 3-5 of the best spreads from the publication. Each spread will be blown up to no less than 4 feet in width, and the spreads will be stacked vertically on the wall. There will also be a small magazine holder affixed to the wall so that the publication can be readily available to the viewers who wish to view a hard copy.
