Editorial Thoughts | Let’s Talk
Rebranded and Ready The year 2012 has ended and we welcome 2013 with open arms! This year is going to be exciting. Let’s set the groundwork to ensure such a notion. Starting a new year we begin to set goals, budgets, resolutions, and all those great things. We could go on and on but my suggestion is to be realistic, prioritize and not forget that the things in the past year just don’t disappear because it is a new year. If in 2012 you were late to every appointment, meeting and deadline, and then admit the problem with time management and figure out a strategy to do better because it is an issue not because it is 2013. Set the clocks ahead, discover your best time to make appointments, and if you are not a morning person do not schedule morning appointments. Make goals to be 15 minutes early to your appointment and see how often you can meet your goal and create a positive habit. Maybe your goal is like many others to lose those unwanted pounds that we have wanted to loose
Is it discipline, dedication, or maybe there is really
something medically going on that we just aren’t aware of that is preventing us from losing those pounds. Get to the source and then work on changing your lifestyle to have the fit life you desire. Some struggle with time some struggle with weight but many of us also struggle with finances. Saving money is something many of us often strive to improve to do better with. I suggest talking with a professional financial planner or accountant who can have a great outlook on how to get your finances on track and put things into a better perspective. These are just a few things among many that I have seen as resolutions some want to finish school, purchase a home, find love, start a business and so much more, but as I said above let’s get to the source of why we have not been able to complete some of the things we desire; the source of our incompletion. Start this year out with a great foundation, with awareness to the things to continue to work on that hindered you from completing things in the previous years. Start your evolution, begin the change and get the discipline in the areas that need improvement. We often pour out so much love and concern for others and there issues sew some of that back into yourself so you may be filled as well! . As always I leave you with this…, ! . As always I leave you with this…
Always Remember. ..........
“Beauty has no boundaries, Self-Love has no limits and Fashion is forever! Be the Best of the best, the greatest of the greats, be confident and build a legacy of which you will be proud!”

Attitutude of Gratitude Author Reverend Frankie Morton
Having an attitude of gratitude means no matter what our current circumstances are, we can simply be thankful for things being as well as they are because they could truly be a lot worse. It means no matter what we have or don’t have, we are going to give God thanks. Personally, my attitude of thanksgiving over the course of my life has become a constant behavior pattern during both pleasant and tumultuous times because I have chosen to adopt, embrace, and practice this mind set. Yes, one must “practice” this attitude on a daily basis. This is the same type of attitude the Apostle Paul encourages us to have in the Bible in the Book of Thessalonians 5:16 when he states, “Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” It could be easily argued having an attitude of gratitude on a regular basis can be very difficult or challenging for those who are constant victims of life’s many hurricanes and earthquakes, metaphorically speaking. Nonetheless, the Bible specifically instructs us to give thanks in all circumstances because this is the will of God.
What one can easily learn by choosing to adopt, embrace, and practice this principle of thanksgiving is they will have obeyed God’s instructions concerning this attitude of gratitude and also have rejected the Spirit of Complacency, as a result, bringing about the favor and blessings of God in his or her life because of one’s obedience (Deuteronomy 28:1-14). Therefore, as we rapidly approach this holiday season, let us do so with a Spirit of Thanksgiving! Whether or not we are financially able to purchase the food, clothes, or gifts of our choice for our loved ones, let us thank God for what we do have. Whether or not we receive bonuses or increases in our paychecks, let us thank God for the jobs we do have. Whether or not we have an opportunity to travel to visit our family, friends, and loved ones, let us thank God for having a place we can call home. Whether or not we are physically, mentally, or emotionally healthy, let us thank God for still being here among the living! Because when it is all said and done, someone else is experiencing life at a much more challenging and devastating level.
Volume 3 Issue 2 | 2013 | www.couturelivingmagazine.com
In other words, our attitude should be one of gratitude. I can clearly hear the Apostle Paul stating, “I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances” (Philippians 4:11) and the Psalmist declaring, “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24). Let us also remember during this holiday season we too can showcase our attitude of gratitude by helping those in need such as the hungry, helpless, homeless, and hopeless. What better way this season for us to display a Thanksgiving Spirit in a world whose light has been tremendously dimmed by its high level of both corporate and individual selfishness and ungratefulness, than to explicitly shine brightly our love and gratitude towards the less fortunate by extending a helping hand to those who are in need. When we do this, we embody the Spirit of Thanksgiving.

Advice for Multi-Tasking Even the most skilled multitasking working woman knows keeping everything on track is tough. From work schedules to social calendars to finding time for yourself, it’s easy to get stuck in a rut with a chaotic routine. Day to day is a challenge enough and that holds true for moms across America, even famous ones like actress Malin Akerman. Akerman admits the joy of motherhood and all of the increased activity that comes with it makes her balancing act tough, especially with her new role on the small screen. The ABC “Trophy Wife” star wants to make the right choices without sacrificing time, taste or nutrition, while savoring every moment with her baby and husband. “Now more than ever, I appreciate the little delights in each day. For me, that’s everything from getting to spend extra time with my family to enjoying my favorite snack during a break on set,” said Akerman. “I fell in love with Müller yogurt because it’s a delicious, nutritious snack that’s easy to grab and go.”

Akerman has mastered these simple tips to make it all work: • Don’t Skip Breakfast. It’s important for the entire family to start the day off right. Breakfast gives you energy for the day and keeps you from caving into all the bad options when hunger hits mid-morning. • Ready for Anything. Because of her hectic schedule, Akerman stocks the fridge with nutritious snacks that are easy to grab and go. Her favorite treat is new Müller FrütUp Mango, a creamy yogurt topped with whipped fruit mousse which she describes as pure bliss.
• Take a Stroll: Akerman always tries to stay active. She loves going on long evening walks with her husband and son.
• Play Guessing Games: Akerman likes to keep her muscles guessing, so she is always changing up her exercise routine. Right now, her favorite exercises are cycling class or pilates. • Buddy-up: She really enjoys exercising outside in the summer. Akerman just grabs a girlfriend and goes for a hike. She loves that it keeps both of them on track. For a behind-the-scenes look at Akerman’s daily routine, summer tips for a successful balancing act and a full line-up of tasty yogurt flavors, visit www.Facebook.com/ mullerquaker.

KEME HENDERSON:
SOMETHIN’ SWEET
Couture Living Magazine | Cover Story Who am I? I am a woman who dares to live my life on my own terms, who values individuality, loyalty, and integrity. I love to laugh and my laugh typically either annoys people or causes them to laugh harder. I am a lover of music. I believe that everyone has value and their opinions, even if I don’t agree, matter. I am a woman whose grandmother taught her it was okay to not fit into an image that someone had of her. It is okay to just be me! I am a woman who is finally following her own life path and not making explanations for the choices I have made or will make. I am an auntie who loves her nieces and nephews with her whole heart, a daughter, sister, and friend. I am an entrepreneur and the proud owner of Somethin’ Sweet.
The story is very funny how Somethin’ Sweet developed. I have been baking since I was in high school. My grandmother was an excellent baker, but it was my godmother, Rosie Nell Wilson who made me fall head over hills in love with baking. I think it was all in the way it made her feel when she was in the kitchen. I remember sitting in a chair and just watching her. She would be laughing and talking to me the entire time. It was something in the way it made her spirit happy to be baking and the way she knew it would make her loved ones feel to taste it. That’s where SS (Somethin’ Sweet) began to be formed without me even knowing it. Later I would go on to win my high school departmental award for Home Economics. People laughed. I didn’t.
Author CLM Editorial Team
For years I would cook and bake for my brother and cousins on football Sundays and for my family and friends. For years they would tell me I should sell it. It wasn’t that I hadn’t thought about it or even dreamed about it, the reality was I was operating my life out of fear and if you live in that, it cripples any dreams you have and literally forces you into
a safer road traveled. I became in contact again with my high school sweetheart after many years and began cooking for him on football Sunday as well. One day he left me the best gift I was ever given, “The Automatic Millionaire” by David Bach. I read it within days and money meant something different to me and a little spark happened. . This same gentleman sat down at my dining room table and asked, “Do you ever think about selling the cookies and cheesecakes?
Volume 3 Issue 2 | 2013 | www.couturelivingmagazine.com
I mean you love to do it, you are good at it, and people want it. Why not go into business and sell it?” I didn’t tell him at that time that I would sometimes drive by bakeries thinking, if only I had enough money, time, support, I would do it. I didn’t tell him how there had been times I tried not to think about it so that I didn’t have to be filled with the regret of not acting on my desire. From time to time I wonder if it was just the right time in my life for me to start “living” or if having people outside of my family and close friends saying my product was good enough. Whatever the reason, the window became wide open with the curtains drawn and I’ve never looked back. Quitting is not an option. I will make this work and not because I’m so great, but because I will do the work required to make it happen and no matter how many “no’s” I hear, I will keep doing it until I take my last breath. “I’ll wrestle me up a future or die trying.” Zora Neale Hurston |1 3 |
Couture Living Magazine| Cover Story Challenges: I wish there were more hours in a day. I literally do every aspect of my business right now and work a pretty demanding job during the day. I have to be 100% at my day job because one, I have children’s lives in my hands and I don’t take that lightly and two because I love practicing social work also. I know many entrepreneurs have cautioned that money isn’t the issue, but I need an investor or the right opportunity to present itself so that I can devote all of my efforts, time and energy to SS. Another challenge is sleep deprivation. I didn’t know I could push my body to the limits I have to make sure I read enough, work enough, network enough. With all the challenges, NOTHING compares to the joy and life SS has brought to my life. I say over and over again, it is the child I never had. It is my baby and I protect it at all costs. What motivates me is the people before me who took nothing and turned it into something and the children I have encountered in my years of social work who show a level of resiliency that is humbling. They really make me push to do more and be better.

I have a several mentors. I would say it is difficult to have too many because it is easy to have mentors that want to turn your vision into what they think it should look like so, I take what I can from people but always go with my gut. Chef Jeff Henderson has been one of my biggest mentors/friends and he frequently gives me advice then says “Go with your gut.” I love that about him. He is a very busy man yet still finds time to answer my calls, texts, and emails and even meets up with me one on one. He had even more odds than I do stacked against him, but he just kept pushing. He is the chance encounter that I feel propelled me and showed me that it doesn’t matter the odds if you are bold enough to get past them. I also have the man who gave me the push to even begin SS. Along with him and his older brother; they are the business side that keeps me moving forward and asking the important questions. A few other people I look up to are Daymond John, Jim Koch, Sara Blakely and of course the Oprah Winfrey. I love the stories where people kept telling them “no” and they kept on trying. They inspire me.

Couture Living Magazine | Cover Story With inspiration comes goals…. To make sure that when people think of gourmet cookies and cheesecakes in Indianapolis, they think of SS. I want to dominate my market. Long term, I want to obtain a building/home for SS and several others that I am currently keeping under lock and key. LOL As one of my mentors once told me, “Be careful who you share your dreams and plans with.”
“These days I relish that old hymn, (“Wouldn’t Take Nothing for My Journey”). Why? Because I know that even the worst of times are always preparing me for the best……What I know for sure: No matter where you are on your journey, that’s exactly where you need to be. The next road is always ahead. Now, I wouldn’t take nothing for my journey now.” Oprah
Volume 3 Issue 2 | 2013 | www.couturelivingmagazine.com
If I could share a piece of advice it would be…make sure it is something you are passionate about or you will quit. If you just want to own a business to make money but have little desire in the actual business, it won’t work. It is a labor of love and you have to be willing to fight through the ups and downs. Final, be fearless and live YOUR life, not what someone else would have you live. I live my life based on some fundamentals. I treat people like I want to be treated, I pray, I forgive people even if I don’t allow them back into my life, I live my life according to how it makes my spirit feel (I won’t live by other people’s rules, standards, religious beliefs or their life path), I stay humble, I spend time with loved ones, I enjoy my own company, and probably the biggest thing that keeps me on my life path is, I find reasons to laugh. Laughter mends the broken things that the heart never thought it could. It is self medication and my saving grace. It gets me through all the rough times of life and SS.

Be Aware| Elevated Awareness Author Tia Grady
LZHEIMERS AWARENESS Alzheimer’s dementia is a condition that affects memory, coordination, thought processes and behaviors. The most common form of dementia is Alzheimer’s. It is also the sixth leading cause of death in this country. The common misconception is that Alzheimer’s is a condition of the elderly population. The reason this may be mistaken as a condition of the elderly is due to the fact that the most common risk factor is older age. However, early or younger onset of this disease can affect up to five percent of the population with this condition. Some people begin to experience symptoms as early as the 40’s or 50’s. Those with younger onset of Alzheimer’s may have difficulties with being diagnosed correctly because physicians do not normally look for Alzheimer’s in younger people. They may be in any of the stages of Alzheimer’s before they are diagnosed. Risk factors of this disease include age, genetics, and family history. Signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s include memory loss, confusion, challenges with daily life, decreased or poor judgment, trouble communicating in speech or writing, misplacing things, social withdrawal, and changes in behavior. At this time there is no cure for Alzheimer’s; however, there are advancements in the treatment of this debilitating condition. Treatments for this disease include medications for memory loss, sleep changes, behavior treatments, and alternative treatments. There is not one test that can be performed to determine a definitive diagnosis. A comprehensive medical evaluation will need to be completed by a physician. A diagnosis can be determined with a complete medical history, mental status testing, a physical and neurological exam, and any other tests that can rule out other causes of dementia-like symptoms. If any of the signs are noticed in you or anyone you know, please seek consultation from a physician. The sooner a diagnosis can be determined, the better chance there is of benefiting from treatment. For additional information please contact your physician and also, the Alzheimer’s Association is available 24 hours a day at 1.800.272.3900. And remember Health First, Self-First.

Story Tells Author LeAnne Joshua-White
Black Chokeberry Black Chokeberry is the first published novel by Martha Nelson. It is the story of three independent women, Ellen, Ruby, and Frances, coming to a crossroad in their lives at the same time. The story is a chronological string of events drawing the women together, and forging bonds despite their differences. Ellen has divorced her husband of 24 years, and relocated to Oswego, New York, the city of her youth, with her dog, Henry. She is dealing with several issues throughout this novel, divorce, loneliness, and depression. Back in Oswego, she is determined to float along existing on candy bars, reflecting on the state of her life, and enjoying the company of her dog. However, Henry has other ideas and is the catalyst to bringing Ellen and Ruby together, and haphazardly Ellen and Frances. Ruby lives across the street from Ellen, still living in her childhood home, alone. Her parents passed away but Ruby continues to live as if they are still alive. Ruby believes sacrifice, frugality, and reclusive ways will get her into heaven; however, on a whim, she approaches Ellen’s home and has an unexpected encounter with Henry that ultimately removes her from her comfort zone.
The character of Frances is then introduced in the aftermath of Ellen and Ruby’s first encounter. Frances is the counterbalance to Ruby, and has known Ruby for years, as she also lives on the same block, but next door to Ellen. She is open, friendly, and a free-spirit, although she is still caught in the past and dealing with her own losses. The central characters in the novel have met, and tentative bonds have been established. A winter storm comes through town, damaging Ellen’s car and she experiences a breakdown and ultimately a break through. Frances suffers a stroke, and is hospitalized. Ruby has recently returned home, only to injure herself, and is in a precarious situation at best. All three women have a need, and through fate and circumstance, realize their only hope is each other. Through two climatic events, the women discover each other, and most importantly they discover themselves. When I read the back cover of Black Chokeberry, I was instantly attracted to the story of three women, coming together, and triumphing in the face of adversity. I wasn’t sure if the characters would be young women, or older women, but I settled in to read expecting a sad story with a happy end. The author, Martha Nelson, effectively brings Ellen, Ruby, Frances, and even Henry to life. I can easily imagine the backstories of each character and the hurdles they each endured in life as real life events.
The trigger points bringing the women together are highly coincidental, but isn’t that usually the way it goes? These women in the fall “season” of their lives each comes to a point of acceptance that has eluded them for a long time, and the author effectively weaves their stories. As I worked my way through Black Chokeberry, I continuously thought of my mother, and the issues and challenges she is going through as an older woman. I couldn’t help but cry and cheer for all three of the women. I recognized parts of their story are reflective of my story, my mother’s story, and other women in my family. Girls grow into women that get married, raise families, have careers, and then come to a “what now” phase in their life when their partner in life is suddenly gone, their children have grown up and started their own families, and they’ve retired. Black Chokeberry is relatable and a good read. My only caution is the end. While each of the women finds what they need, the conclusion put me out of sorts. I found myself flipping the page looking for an epilogue, and when I didn’t see it, I was disappointed. I’d recommend this book to my mother and older female relatives; maybe through Ellen, Ruby, and Frances, they will see resolution does come, just maybe not how you expect it. Author Martha Nelson

The Viewpoint
How Women Can Find “Me Time” In Today’s Fast-Paced World Author Dr. Wendy James
Do women have more choices today? Why? Today, 40% of women are the breadwinners. More women are pursuing higher degrees, Masters, and Ph.Ds. than men. There are a higher percentage of women raising their children as single moms. As a result, women are attempting to do it all, and rarely take time for out of the day for themselves, their man, and their girlfriends. How is that balancing thing going? Does multitasking work? As women, we are always multitasking; work or stay at home mom, picking up the kids, taking them to their activities, cleaning the house, going to the store, cooking, doing the laundry and checking our email. I interviewed working women on balance, and one woman emailed me at midnight and I responded, “How is that balancing thing going? That I am responding to you at midnight says something about my balancing too!” Can we do it all? Can we be the best? As women we may struggle with balancing our various roles at work, at home, in marriage and with our children. We want to meet all the demands of running a household to be the best employer/employee, the best wife, the best mother and the best of friends.
| 18 |
Doing it all, at what cost to us? We are the pleasers, we want to do it all, yet at what cost to us? We need time to turn technology off, take a break and do something we enjoy that takes us away from our “normal” routine. That means taking time for ourselves, taking time with our man and attempting to get away and spend meaningful time with the one we love. Do women control the relationship and schedules? Women control the relationship. Control is different from manipulation. We make sure things get done and schedules are organized. When can we change a schedule for me time? Can we just use the eraser? I remember when my husband and I were visiting my sister-in-law. She had a schedule on a whiteboard of all the kids’ activities of what was happening and when. She pointed at the board and said, she and her husband had no time for each other. My husband took an eraser, went over to the whiteboard and wiped out a kid’s activity. He said, “Now you have a free evening”. His niece shouted, “You can’t do that. That’s my pony show”.
Girlfriends, you get the idea, we are in control! Therefore, we can use an eraser and make time for what is important in our life. Our husbands do! Are we in control of our life? How can we find time for us and for our man? We control our life. We determine when we need to take time for our life and life with our man and our children. We can be selfish and we get to determine what we want to do when. We can have our “me” time and remember don’t forget about time with just you and your man. Therefore, we need to take the time to step away, turn off our “normal” life and focus on what we want to do and have fun! That means turn off technology; cellphones, computers and emails. Taking ourselves away allows our subconscious mind to solve problems while we are consciously enjoying an activity. You will be better at everything you attempt to do if you allow time to breath, relax and focus on “me” time. Dallas, TX Based- Dr. Wendy J. The Male Perspective Share meals together: According (sic) research by CASA, children who share regular meals with their parents earn better grades in school than those who do not. Set a goal to share a meal with your child at least two days per week. Dinner doesn’t have to be elaborate. The focus should be on communication. Plan fun activities: No matter where you go or how much money you spend, every moment Article provided by (Family Features) and Photo courtesy of Getty Images spent with your child is a chance to create positive memories. Set aside time to celebrate your kids’ accomplishments and special occasions. This will increase the child’s confidence and encourage them to keep trying. Everyone knows the classic love story. Man and woman fall in love, get married, have a baby and live happily ever after. However, real life isn’t always the fairy tale. While today’s version of the modern family has changed over time, the importance of parental involvement in children’s lives has not. However, one out of every three American children (about 24 million) lives in a home without their biological father. According to research by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University (or CASA), these children are more likely use drugs and experience educational, health, emotional and behavioral problems. “Having both biological parents active in a child’s life has proven to have a positive effect on both the child’s social development and academic achievement,” says Dr. Janet Taylor, an author and community psychiatrist in the New York City area who frequently counsels families. For kids, growing up in an environment where both parents are involved is important to their long-term development, health and well-being. Dr. Taylor provides the following advice for dads on how they can stay active in their child’s life, even if they are not the primary caregiver. #11623_AR Source: Identigene

Get involved at school: Fathers are a positive force in their children’s education. According to a study by the National Center for Education Statistics, when fathers get involved in their child’s education, the child is more likely to get good grades, enjoy school and participate in extracurricular activities. The absence of some men may be due to not fully knowing the paternity of the child. “Paternity questions are actually more common than you think. In fact, a recent survey found that one in five Americans said that they, or a close friend or family member, have questioned paternity,” adds Dr. Taylor. In these cases, the mother may choose to take on full responsibility, or the man may be reluctant to be a father to a child that he’s not sure is his. Regardless, addressing paternity questions is the most responsible and caring decision for the child involved. Test kits like the Identigene DNA Paternity Test are available at drug stores and supercenters, and offer 100 percent accurate and confidential results within a matter of days. Holiday Tips: Six Ways to Save during the Holidays Author Lisa Gilliard, M.B.A., M.A.
As the holidays approach, it is easy to become slightly overwhelmed with balancing the regular outgoing expenses such as bills, car maintenance, and small repairs with setting aside a lump sum of money to spend on loved ones. Well do not fret. This year you will not need to pick up a second job for the holidays or get into debt by trying to overextend yourself financially. This year, if you follow these six simple tricks to save money and with some planning and creativity you can enjoy the same holiday excitement without the financial backlash.
1.) Create a gift giving list. Jot down a list of everyone you intend to purchase a gift for and the maximum amount you will spend on one person. 2.) Create a holiday budget. Purchase only what is on your list and do not exceed 1% of your annual income. In your budget, do not forget to include specialty wrapping paper, stationary, cards, holiday food, and décor needed. 3.) Become a fan of “Early Bird Specials.” Many stores have specials that offer shopping incentives throughout the year. You can begin to shop for the holidays months in advance in order to stay on budget and get the best deals. By shopping earlier, you will prevent overspending and will have the ability to conduct price comparisons between stores, order catalogs, and online. 4.) Shop Online. There are several websites that offer free shipping with a minimal purchase order. By placing your orders online you will avoid the long lines and temptation to purchase items that are not on the original gift list. 5.) Be creative. Handmade gifts offer a personalized touch and are often less expensive than store bought items. Think of the individuals on your gift list and how to incorporate your own talents into the gift you have in mind. 6.) Use your credit cards. Throughout the year try to pay down your credit cards so that during the holidays you can dedicate one specific credit card to holiday purchases. Credit card companies offer incentives such as cash back rewards or frequent flyer miles for making minimal purchases with your card. Use this to your advantage. Spend to save. With these helpful tips you can minimize your spending and maximize the cheer this holiday season. Happy Shopping!

HOLIDAY FIRE SAFETY Author Tia Grady
It is easy to think a house fire would never happen to your family, but during the holiday months, there are more potential fire risks around your home than you would think. A fire grows so rapidly one spark can fill a room with toxic smoke in just seconds. U.S. Fire Administration studies show within three seconds of ignition, a fire can completely engulf a dry scotch pine; within 40 seconds, an entire room can be filled with thick, fatal, toxic smoke by a flashover. The great news is a tragedy can be prevented in less than seconds. What can you do to help keep your family safe this season? Prepare, plan, and prevent. 1. Prepare Every level of your home and all sleeping areas should have a fire alarm. Alarms should be tested every week and you should be able to hear them behind closed doors. Involve your children in the testing so they know what the alarm sounds like and what they should do if it goes off. At least twice a year, batteries should be changed. An easy reminder to change the batteries is to do it each time you change the clock for daylight savings time. 2. Plan Be sure your family has a fire escape plan in place. Draw up a floor plan of your home and designate at least two exits from every room. Rehearse the plan with your children and specify a meeting place outside of your home such as the mailbox or neighbor’s driveway. A good idea is to have a fire drill and practice getting out of the house with your children at least twice a year. Teach older children to stay low in case of fire, feel doors before opening them, and to never return to a house once they have escaped. 3. Prevent Home Heating Safety: It is no surprise home heating fires escalate during the winter months. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) states with increased fireplace usage, chimney fires are a greater risk, as are fires caused by errant sparks. Take a safety minute today and call to have your chimney inspected and cleaned. | 2 2|
The Chimney Safety Institute of America recommends cleaning your chimney once a year to reduce the risk of fire and also carbon monoxide poisoning due to creosote build-up or obstructions in the chimney. Always use a fireplace screen to prevent sparks from escaping out of the fireplace. Never burn wrapping paper in the fireplace as it can cause an intense burst of heat that can lead to a fire. Space heaters are also involved in a large number of accidental home fires. Actually, space heaters are responsible for the majority of fatal home heating fires. According to the NFPA, the most common reason for a space heater fire is leaving it too close to something that can burn, such as a blanket or curtains. Space heaters should be positioned at least three feet away from objects and placed on a firm surface to prevent tipping. Never leave a space heater unattended and always shut them off before going to bed. Articles such as coats and mittens should never be placed on a space heater to dry. Candle Safety: Candes are another common reason for house fires. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), candles account for more than 12,000 fires annually. The CPSC advises if you decide to use candles in your holiday decorations, always blow them out before you leave the room. Be sure to store matches and lighters out of your children’s reach. Teach your kids if they see an unattended, lit candle they should always tell you. Your kids can play a big part in keeping your home safe for the holidays. Cooking Safety: During the holiday season, more home fires start in the kitchen compared to any other room in the house. It is not surprising to know more kitchen fires start on Thanksgiving than on any other day during the year. The best way to prevent a cooking fire before it starts is quite easy – cooks should stay in the kitchen. Never leave a cooking pot or oven unattended, not even for a minute. Designate the area around the stove as “kid free”. Also be sure to keep dishtowels and other things that can burn well away from the stove. While you are cooking, it is also a good idea to turn the handles of pots inward, just in case small kids do enter the “kid free” zone and reach for the handles. Simple steps can help to prevent some of the most common home fires during the holidays. Most of these steps only take a minute and could prevent what could be a lifetime of regret. And remember, Health First, Self First!

FASHIONABLE FLATS Author CLM Editorial Team
Numerous women have either taken an oath to only wear flats, while other women have exiled them from their wardrobe entirely. Being on the go can be quite cumbersome in heels! Moving for hours on end during the day and so many women do it daily! Yes, it is great to be fabulous and have the stamina and strength to walk endlessly in a stiletto, but it’s not the best thing for your body. Yes… to be fabulous and beautiful there is a cost sometimes its pain, but why put yourself through that when you can have a fashionable lovely flat that is just as awesome and suitable for running around miles on end through the day! There are many options to a flat but also different style that definitely can spruce up a suit, skirt or jeans and blouse. When wearing flats can be stylish and just as fun as their stiletto friends, and more or less have comfort that those heels will not outdo. No matter your shoe delight be sure to take it easy on your toes and slip into a pair of comfortable, chic flats. The following tips will help you receive high ratings of fashion forward statements even when you aren’t wearing heels!

Acquire Flats with Flair Flats usually aren’t as vivacious as heels but look for flats in chic colors, lush textiles and textures to help spruce up the appearance without having to opt to high heels. Embellishments can also add a lot of character to a pair of flats, although it’s best not to go overboard with them, you still want to portray a chic image not a peculiar one, and it’s a lot more versatile as well.

Flats and Hemlines Wearing flat shoes can make your legs appear shorter. When you choose to wear flats with skirts, go for a hemline that is above the knee, to reclaim a look of length to your leg. Wearing flats with longer skirts can give you a dated appearance if it’s not done properly.
Tailored and Pointed Toes Crop pants and flats are a perfect match. Long pants if tailored to the appropriate length can be flattering as well. Make sure your pants are not too long, not only does it not look together but it ruins the pair of pants from dragging the floor. Unless you’re ultra-thin or slender built, avoid wearing really tight pants or skinny jeans with flats, as this can sometimes bring more undesired attention to parts of your body you would rather not emphasize, it may also make your build look unflattering. Instead, consider pairing flared or wide-legged pants with pointed-toe flats for an ultra-modish look.

Venetian Décor gives new life through its exquisite furniture, pillows, cosmetic and jewelry travel bags, eye masks, phones covers, and personal accessories that are one-of-a-kind timeless pieces. Venetian Décor, puts a new twist on family history and old world charm. We asked Pam to share some insight about Venentian Décor. She shared some great advice about how to work the Venetian into your home. Following are amazing, easy to-do shabby chic tips from, designer Pam Beattie.
Shabby Chic Tips: • Give a piece new life by painting a dresser. Take out the bottom drawer, add a basket and convert to a foyer table • Remove the bottom drawer of a bedside table or end table and wallpaper the inside with a funky pattern to create a new look. I’d suggest painting the table a Tiffany blue with a retro black and white printed wallpaper • Add funky table legs to an old drawer (from a table or dresser) and create an end table that is all your own and one-of-a-kind • Tiffany blue, egg shell blue, etc. are great colors to use when restoring a shabby chic piece, so are white and silver • Use a wonderful old cabinet with lots of furniture knobs that you can interchange. Create a more three dimensional feel using polished chrome hardware giving it a haute new look

Shabby Chic Tips:
• Create distressed designs on an old piece to give it a real shabby chic style • Fur is back! Fox, mink, and beaver…fashionistas are wearing what they want again…fur! Some of the most A-list women have been caught wearing fur recently, Kate Moss, Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, and Joan Collins, just to name a few. Draping a fur blanket over the foot of the bed makes for an instant shabby chic look • Buy an old lamp from a vintage boutique and replace the lamp shade to make it all your own • Using an old set of wine/martini glasses, accent the stem and base with glitter • Rhinestone button magnets make statement pieces. Using heirloom broaches, rhinestones, and buttons, personalize your home and/or message boards with this shabby chic tip
Trending colors to watch out for and utilize during the holiday season upon us; oratorio red, oxblood gold, lame, sulo gold, forest green, pine green, calico rose, blatantly red, refined copper, herati leaf, bach blue and blush golden sun. Metallic tones are very big as well. Pearls, seed pearls and sequins can be used to bedazzle and accent powder room hand towels, and are a DIY project. Satin and silk ribbons can be used to garnish your Christmas tree, and are an elegant must-have, instead of using the traditional garland.

AN ENHANCED ARRIVAL EXPERIENCE One element that has been preserved is the welcoming approach to the resort, complete with several new elements that are tied together with a contemporary design aesthetic. The lobby is designed in a cool and deep blue color palette with driftwood, mahogany, and beige accents. Giacometti-style artistic statues are positioned at the lobby entrance. In the center of the lobby area, clusters of upholstered seating are centered around a striking crystal chandelier (from the Tzar’s Palace in Russia), making for a convivial environment for socializing with fellow guests. THE CULINARY SPIRIT OF THE CARIBBEAN The Clubhouse, the center of the action at The BodyHoliday, has received a complete facelift resulting in a modern, full-service facility that can better serve guests’ needs, whether it be planning out their activities for the day or spending a rainy afternoon in the new game room.
