Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of Covington Catholic High School, As I look at the year in review and reflect upon the accomplishments of the 2016 graduating class, a familiar phrase comes to mind: “Excellence begets excellence”. These young men have received many accolades over the past four years and deservedly so. Their success will help inspire students who come after them to fulfill their potential as well. All four cornerstones of our mission – to educate young men spiritually, academically, physically and socially - were exemplified by this senior class:

• Spiritual: 15,109 hours of Community Service in their four-year CCH career • Academic: • Average ACT score > 26 – our highest ever • 7 National Merit Finalists, the most of any private, public or Catholic school in Northern Kentucky • 14 attendees of the Kentucky Governor’s Programs (GSP, GSA, GSE) • $12.6 million in merit-based scholarship offers • Social: state-level awards for new clubs like Robotics and Mock Trial • Physical: • Multiple regional and individual State titles • Basketball State Championship as sophomores • Soccer State Championship as seniors As I watched the 137 graduates walk across the stage at Thomas More College to receive their diplomas, I thought how confident I am that these young men will be good citizens, husbands and fathers who make a difference as leaders in their careers, their communities and the church. I believe that the dedicated, dutiful and passionate faculty and staff at Covington Catholic are directly contributing to this outcome. The drug testing policy we recently announced for 2016-17 is another example of how we strive for excellence at CovCath. We believe this enhancement to our already extensive commitment to each student’s well-being and holistic education will help each to choose a safe and healthy lifestyle. We have been overwhelmed by positive response and support since the announcement of the updated policy. Our commitment to excellence is also demonstrated through the Bright Minds, Bright Future Capital Campaign. I am happy to announce that we are within reach of our Phase I goal of $8.2 million (includes Phase I capital projects and endowment). Thanks to the generosity of the CovCath community, as of this writing, we are only $180,000 away from our Phase I goal! I am grateful for this Senior Class, our alumni and all CCH stakeholders, who have striven for excellence and continue to enhance our school for the greater glory of God. God’s blessings, Bob Rowe

2016 NORTHERN KENTUCKIAN OF THE YEAR This year, Most Reverend Roger J. Foys was named the 2016 Northern Kentuckian of the Year. The recognition luncheon was held at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center and was attended by 600 friends and supporters of Bishop Foys and Covington Catholic.
Artwork by CCH students was displayed at a reception prior to the luncheon, and the CCH Chamber Choir performed during lunch. The Northern Kentuckian of the Year Award was established in 1996 to recognize individuals who have distinguished themselves as leaders
dedicated to the economic and social well-being of the Northern Kentucky region. After another very successful year, the event has now raised over $1,000,000 for Covington Catholic High School’s tuition assistance program.
UPDATED DRUG AND ALCOHOL POLICY: ALIGNED WITH COVCATH’S MISSION An updated Drug and Alcohol Policy for the 2016-17 school year was recently announced and very positively received. We believe this policy and substance abuse prevention program reflect our commitment to the development of our young men in alignment with CovCath’s Mission (“to embrace the gospel message of Jesus Christ in order to educate young men spiritually, academically, physically, and socially”) – free from the destructive impacts of drugs. Key points of the updated policy include: • 100% of our student population will be tested at least once annually, and will be subject to additional random testing. • Parent and student agreement to the overall policy and student participation in the testing is mandatory for enrollment at Covington Catholic for the 2016-17 school year. • Counseling and substance abuse treatment will be required following a positive test result.
1) NKYL Honoree, Most Reverend Roger J. Foys; 2) Members of the 2016 NKYL Committee; and 3) Luncheon attendees and supporters of Bishop Foys with “rally towels”, and 4) Bishop Foys accepting the award.
• Possession or usage of controlled substances, including alcohol, by students on school property or when attending a schoolsponsored activity, is not permitted. Guidelines for disciplinary action for infractions are articulated in the policy.
words: “I can’t. My school tests”), as well as tools to address usage with appropriate treatment if/when it occurs. Importantly, it is an extension of the very positive partnership Covington Catholic High School has had with DFCA for 9 years. The voluntary participation in CovCath’s DFCA program has included approximately 2/3 of our student population. DFCA will continue to support this program for 100% of Covington Catholic students with resources and positive reinforcement of drug-free lifestyles.
We are expanding drug-testing out of a deep concern for the health and well-being of students. We do not have evidence of widespread substance abuse among our student body. However, the alarming rise of drug use and addiction in the Northern Kentucky community atlarge is well documented, and even one student at risk is one too many. This program, with technical and financial support from St. Elizabeth Healthcare, Medicount Management, and the Drug Free Clubs of America (DFC), is intended to provide our young men with an additional tool for deterrence (five very powerful
We pray that this program will help the students of Covington Catholic High School make positive and healthful choices as they move toward successful and impactful futures within the Northern Kentucky community and beyond.

MOCK TRIAL TEAM RESTS ITS CASE Covington Catholic participated for the first time this year in the Kentucky mock-trial competition, placing seventh in the state. Students play the parts of trial lawyers and witnesses, and they are judged on their ability to argue their side of the case. This year’s case was one about Left to right: Kristin McCall, Marcus Maier, J.J. Snidow, election Kyle Crail, Trey Rottinghaus, Will Akin, Danny Matos, Zach Thapar, Avery Dietz, Nate Schumacher, fraud. Judge Amul Thapar, Jacob Kennedy. According to junior Kyle Crail (Team Captain), Mock Trial has helped him build skills in three important ways. “We build teamwork as we brainstorm and analyze the case theory; we use critical thinking skills when the case takes an unanticipated turn; and, we learn and practice how things like voice inflection can improve the impact of our
Last spring, roughly 1.5 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools across the country entered the 2016 program by taking the PSAT/NMSQT Qualifying Test. Of those juniors, only 16,000, or about 1%, were named National Merit Semifinalists, based on their scores on this exam. Finalists, named from among these academically talented students, will advance one step further in the competition for some 7,400 scholarships worth more than $32 million, to be awarded in the spring of 2016. Nationwide, about half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title. WINTER & SPRING SPORTS RECAPS Archery The archery team fielded a team of 27 archers for the 1st season as a CCH varsity sport. The team completed its first season in April after finishing in 7th place at the 6th Regional Tournament, shooting a team score of 3022 and led by Noah Davis who shot a 284. Overall, the team did very well in its first year and were competitive throughout the season. Success should continue next year as the entire team will return, as there were no seniors on the team this year. The team was also awarded a nearly $5,000 grant to purchase equipment from the Friends of the NRA organization. Basketball The 2015-16 basketball squad tried to make it three straight Regional Championships, but fell short in the finals to Newport Central Catholic. However, the Colonels had a successful regular season, finishing 28 – 7 while also earning a #1 state ranking. The Colonels and Coach Ruthsatz have one of the winningest programs in the state of Kentucky over the past 3 years, and will look to continue that trend next season. The future is bright for the young Colonels who started only one senior; the team will be poised to return atop the 9th Region and with a trip to Rupp Arena in its objectives. Swimming The swimming and diving team finished yet another successful season in 2015-16 recording a 1st place finish in every regular season meet. The team won the 9th Region for the 18th year in a row, winning 9 of the 12 events, and setting 4 meet records. The Aqua Colonels completed the season at the state meet as runners up behind powerhouse Louisville St. Xavier. The hard work and effort
12
COVINGTON CATHOLIC JOURNAL
paid off as many swimmers left the state meet with strong finishes in their individual events or team relays. This surge was led by Brendan Meyer who finished 1st in each of his 4 events, end route to being named the NKY Swimmer of the Year. Wrestling The wrestling team continued to make strides of improvement in 2015-16, its third season. The Colonels placed as high as 4th in one regular season tournament, and finished with 4 placers at the regional meet, 3 more than last season. Now with record numbers on the roster, and losing only 5 seniors, the team has a strong foundation to build the program. Coach Smith, after this first year coaching, will continue to improve the wrestling program with a young and eager squad coming back in 2016-17. Bowling The Colonel bowling team had a successful season finishing second in the region with a regular season record of 37-26. The team ended the season finishing 4th place in the Regional Tournament. Junior Adam Zimmerman set two individual school records this season, finished 14th in the state tournament, and was a first team Northern Kentucky selection. He will look to lead the way for the Colonels next season after 6 seniors graduated from this year’s team. Tennis Following a State Runners- Up finish last season, the 2016 tennis team battled to a quarterfinals finish losing to Louisville Trinity. However, the tennis squad earned its 15th straight Regional Championship. In addition, the
Haught brothers (Jake and Jared) won the doubles regional title and Anthony Bosch won the singles regional title. Sophomore Max Cook earned the team’s best finish in the state tournament finishing in the top 8 out of 32 participants. The tennis team will look to build on the 2016 season with a relatively young and experienced roster returning next year. Track & Field The track & field team met new challenges in 2016. After being left with only four seniors on the roster, the team was also moved up to AAA. However, young talent stepped up with a strong underclassmen roster guided by senior leadership to compete and battle throughout the season. The Colonels tied for 2nd place in the Regional Tournament; however, they were unable to score any points against the extremely competitive schools in the AAA State meet. Coach McCoy will have some talent moving up over the next few years as the freshman team finished 1st Place at the Freshman Regional. Baseball Coach Krumpelbeck and the baseball team completed its 30th consecutive season with 20 or more wins, finishing with a final record of 26 – 9. Despite a strong regular season, the Colonels fell short in post season play losing to Beechwood in the district finals and Highlands in the 9th Region Tournament. On a brighter note for the future, the JV team finished Regional Runners up, and the freshman team finished as Regional Champions.
ALL-STARS Congratulations to the Colonel student-athletes who were named to the Fall and Winter sports NKY All-Stars by Enquirer Media. Very notably in Soccer, Bryce Day was named Player of the Year, and Jeremy Robertson was named Coach of the Year. Additionally, Bryce and Ben Darpel also were named to the All-State 1st Team (East Division), Michael Wessels was 2nd Team, and Sam Romes was Honorable Mention. In Swimming & Diving, Brendan Meyer was Swimmer of the Year (as well as 1st team All-State) and Evan Brungs was Diver of the Year (and 2nd team All-State). In addition, numerous Colonels were recognized for Academic All-State Honors. Sport

Did you know that a significant portion of our student body is first introduced to CovCath via programs like CCH Summer Camps and/or youth athletic teams such as Colonel Youth Football (CYF)? This year, we have over 600 kids registered to attend the large variety of camps that include options for boys and girls across all grades. The opportunities include: Archery Football Band Digital Design Baseball Soccer Theatre Animation Design Basketball Wrestling Art Engineering Design Robotics CYF will have three teams for fall 2016: 7th / 8th Grade, 5th / 6th Grade, and 3rd / 4th Grade. All grade levels will be playing in the Greater Catholic Youth League (GCYL). The CYF and GCYL teach “Heads Up Football” for player safety. Boys whose families are members of any Catholic parish in the Diocese of Covington are eligible to play for CYF (whether attending a Catholic parish school or not). For more information on any of these programs, go to covcath.org/summercamps
Commitment, dedication and sacrifice. These are the words that Father Matthew Cushing used to describe the CCH “Spirit that Will Not Die” at the recent baccalaureate luncheon for the CCH Class of 2016. Father encouraged our graduates to carry these values throughout their lives. These sentiments from Father Cushing, along with the other aspects of the baccalaureate luncheon, the Senior Mass, and the graduation ceremony, captured the spirit of the CovCath community that I have witnessed during my first four months as Advancement Director. The commitment of time and expertise from parents, alumni, and friends who volunteer in a variety of capacities immediately impressed me. I came to realize that CovCath could not function, and more importantly could not accomplish all that it does, without the expertise, creativity, and industriousness of these selfless individuals. The dedication of our faculty and administration, along with their credentials and secondto-none academic instruction, is truly remarkable as seen in the achievements of this year’s senior class. I have found the faculty and staff to be warm and welcoming as I have melded into this CovCath family. Our students are equally impressive. I have had the opportunity to meet a number of them and learn about and observe their experiences and contributions in the classroom, in the community, and in the church. Before I came to CovCath, a parent told me his sons enrolled in CovCath as boys and graduated as men. Observing these fine young men, watching how they conduct themselves, and hearing them speak on graduation day certainly confirmed this to be true. I have also had the opportunity to meet a number of our generous CovCath alumni and donors and count them among some of the most welcoming and generous individuals that I have encountered in all my years in education and advancement. I have no doubt that their devotion to the school is deeply influenced by their own student experiences and an unwavering belief in the school’s mission. In a very short amount of time, I have witnessed the commitment, dedication and sacrifice inherent in every segment of the Covington Catholic family. Parents, faculty, students, alumni, donors, and friends of Covington Catholic all display these characteristics, with each group’s motivation rooted in the gospel of Jesus Christ, With a Spirit That Will Not Die. God’s blessings,
Judith M. See Director of Advancement

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE
Dear CCH Alumni, Parents and Friends, I’m pleased to share that thanks to the support of many generous donors, we are within reach of our Phase I Capital Campaign goal of $7,590,000 for capital projects. As of this writing, we are promoting a $100,000 Challenge match from 1961 alumnus Tony Zembrodt in hopes of accelerating achievement of our Phase I goal. Once we surpass our Phase I goal, we’ll begin applying gifts to our Phase II project. Phase II will include gymnasium renovations and a new Multipurpose Gymnasium, which will be used for gym classes, intramural sports, indoor practice space for all sports teams, Bingo, and alumni functions. Achieving the goal is urgent because we must receive Diocesan approval this summer in order to accomplish our timeline for Phase I: LIGHTS! Begin construction of Stadium renovations, including lights, following the 2016 fall sports season. + STEM! Begin STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), and cafeteria/ alumni additions in the Spring of 2017. = ACTION! Make your gift today - help us begin construction this year.

YUNG FAMILY TENNIS COMPLEX FORMALLY DEDICATED The Yung Family Tennis Complex at Covington Catholic High School was dedicated and celebrated on April 14, 2016, with donors, team players and their families, community guests, and school administration in attendance. The Yung Family Tennis Complex features six beautiful new courts, seating, fencing and a shelter. A project many years in the works, “We’re very excited to have this topnotch facility on our campus, allowing us to practice and host matches in our own backyard,” Colonels coach Al Hertsenberg said. After an opening prayer led by Fr. Mark Keene, Covington Catholic Principal Mr. Bob Rowe spoke about the long journey to complete the tennis complex project. “From acquisition of various properties beginning in 2007, to work done to prepare the site in 2009, to the purchase of the neighboring Church of the Nazarene made possible by the Dennis Griffin family, the effort required the vision, dedication and collaboration of many people. Through the efforts of key volunteers like Kevin Molony, donations were secured to fund the construction of the complex. Ultimately, because of some very generous donors, the school was able to fulfill its dream of having state of the art tennis courts.” Mr. Rowe recognized the following people: Diocese of Covington: Most Reverend Roger J. Foys, Bishop of Covington; Don Knochelmann, Buildings and Grounds; Mike Clines, Superintendent of Schools; Dale Henson, Chief Financial Officer.

THE ANNUAL APPEAL Thank you for supporting the 2015-16 Annual Appeal. The Annual Appeal helps fund the Covington Catholic High School tuition assistance program. Gifts to the Annual Appeal gave 120 students (approximately 1/5 of our student population) the opportunity to attend CovCath last year. Without your support this would not have been possible.
As one of our students recently expressed in a letter to a donor, “Thank you for helping me attend Covington Catholic. I am so blessed to have supportive people like you in my life.” Please continue your support in 2016-17 by visiting www.covcath.org/annualappeal or using the enclosed envelope.

JEROME J. MOSER SCHOLARSHIP FUND Jerome J. Moser Scholarship Fund Established The Jerome J. Moser Scholarship Fund was recently established to provide financial assistance for young men to attend CovCath. The endowment was a Christmas gift from Jerry’s loving wife, Eileen Wendt-Moser. Eileen and Jerry’s son Tim attended the all-school mass on April 21st, where the scholarship was officially announced. Jerry, a 1949 graduate, spoke emotionally to the students about his time at CovCath and how it influenced his life. Jerry and Eileen are parishioners at Blessed Sacrament Church. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1950 – 53 and retired from Columbia Federal Savings and Loan, where he was Vice President. Jerry and Eileen said that they don’t have need for material gifts at this time in their lives. So, Eileen chose to give Jerry a Christmas gift that will keep on giving to Covington Catholic students for years to come. COVINGTON CATHOLIC JOURNAL
