from the Principal
Bob Rowe Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of Covington Catholic High School, We are filled with excitement as we begin the 2015-16 school year. A very visible sign of progress at CCH will be when 173 freshmen enter our front doors, as the largest class since 1972. Our total enrollment will exceed 600 for the first time in forty years (up 25% from 485 just five years ago) and Covington Catholic will become the largest high school in the Diocese of Covington. The responsibility of educating 600+ young men spiritually, academically, physically and socially is taken very seriously, and faithfully, at CovCath. I believe our enrollment growth reflects that in many ways. Faculty and staff had the vision and commitment to adapt and become more innovative in all areas of our curriculum. Our coaches/moderators have challenged our students to push themselves to not accept mediocrity or complacency. Our Community Service Program has grown and is leading the way in providing service to others. Our School Board and committee members generously give their time and talents to make sure that we sustainably deliver our mission by advising our administration within a comprehensive strategic framework. Our parents trust us as educators to provide their sons with a top quality and holistic education. As an administration, we are blessed to be surrounded by so many special individuals (Faculty, Staff, Alumni, Parents, Volunteers) who are student-centered and so committed to the success of CCH. We are ready to continue a new chapter here at CCH, which includes some new faces on our Staff and School Board. I wish to comment on several transitions. Thank you to Mr. Mike Guidugli for serving as our Athletic Director for the last 28 years and to Sue Finke for her 11 years of service as our Advancement Director. Both Mike and Sue sacrificed time from their families and handled their roles with calmness, integrity, dedication and professionalism. Both brought priceless insight and experience to our faculty/staff. More on their many achievements and accolades is featured later in this issue. Also, I would be remiss without saying how sad it was to say goodbye to Mr. Dennis Griffin. Mr. Griffin and his family have been instrumental in cultivating the footprint of our campus over the last seven years. Mr. Griffin was a firm but fair man who always had the best interest of others at heart. We as a community are eternally grateful for his kindness, generosity and, most importantly, his friendship. Please enjoy this edition of the JOURNAL as we share some of the ways that CovCath is the best high school opportunity in Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati. As always, you and your families are in my prayers. God’s blessings, Bob Rowe

CCH BRAND AND LOGO
INTRODUCING‌
An updated logo to represent Covington Catholic as we move toward our 100th anniversary and beyond. A set of logos and a corresponding set of usage standards were developed over the past year with input from hundreds of CCH stakeholders including students, parents, alumni, faculty, board members, and branding professionals. We are proudly unveiling them as the new school year begins, and expect that they will quickly become the instantly recognized and eminently respected images of CovCath. Wear them proudly, Colonels!
These logo elements are the basis for many creative combinations that will be used across the full array of school applications – correspondence, signage, sport uniforms, spirit items, you name it!

CCH BRAND AND LOGO
OUR BRAND As the only all-male Catholic school within the Diocese of Covington, the mission of Covington Catholic is to embrace the Gospel message of Jesus Christ in order to educate young men spiritually, academically, physically, and socially. CCH is in its 91st year of educating young men and has graduated over 8,000 alumni. CovCath can point to many examples of outstanding success in fulfilling that mission, from the breadth and depth of our community service program, to top tier academic results, to consistent regional/statewide success for athletic programs, to a culture of brotherhood that also supports individual growth. With faith at the center of our collective purpose, we value the role that every part of our community plays in achieving this success – students and their families, committed and dedicated staff/faculty, alumni, donors and the community at large. Based on this reflection of Covington Catholic, informed by history as well as surveys and focus groups from a current perspective, key characteristics of the CovCath brand that are represented in these logos include: •C atholic Identity and Tradition: The cross is at the center of our mission. It is same cross as the one included at the center of the school seal, which will be carried forward as a key part of the overall brand representation. • Tradition is the foundation for the future: We reflect that foundation, with a modern “update.” Our logos and fonts have a classic, “clean” and collegiate feel.
What is Brand Identity, anyway? Brand Identity is the collective image that various stakeholders perceive based on everything they see, hear and experience in regards to a given product or service. Long understood by companies like P&G, Disney and Nike, the power of consistent branding is now increasingly being embraced by other institutions ranging from Army West Point (which unveiled its updated, very detailed brand identity in April, 2015) to many high schools. Focusing on brand identity enables Covington Catholic to provide clarity and emphasis to the core values, strengths and competencies that have produced a great school with strong results, tradition and future. Logos are one very visible articulation of a brand. The old adage, “A picture is worth a thousand words” is very true. These images are powerful when deliberately chosen and consistently used. We have developed detailed guidelines and procedures for the coordinated and consistent use of these images, and will trademark the core elements of these logos, as the branding strength they represent is an asset that deserves respect and protection.
•A ll Male: The logos are masculine, strong and bold, with a distinctness that reflects and connects an individual spirit to the community. •U nity and Excellence: By driving consistency with a unified and seamless collection of logos, we demonstrate honor and respect for the excellence of our school’s brand. • Colors: The primary colors are deep royal blue and white, with (limited) use of a lighter blue and a silvery grey as accent colors. Different shades of blue have historically symbolized Mary.
The C logo is the centerpiece of the new athletic turf field, to be unveiled at the August 21st football game and August 22nd soccer game.

2015 Grads Recognized for Scholarship Awards
Senior Tradition
Members of the Class of 2015 were recognized at an academic scholarship signing event in May for accepting scholarships worth a minimum of half of tuition value to the following colleges and universities: Tyler Micek Arizona State University Adam Ruwe Northern Kentucky University Steven Faris Northern Kentucky University Adrian Neff Ohio State University Patrick Ballow Ohio University Austin Picone Thomas More College Robert Urbina Thomas More College Miso Rokvic University of Cincinnati Joseph Pieper University of Dayton Grant Romes University of Louisville Kurtis Stegman University of Louisville Mark Ryan University of Louisville Todd Sheets, Jr. University of Louisville Aaron Buckley University of Kentucky Christian VanDusen University of Kentucky Samuel Kathman University of Mississippi Caleb Summe University of South Carolina
Among the many traditions that define CovCath and, in particular, the senior class, is Bike Day on one of the final days of the school year. Around 7:30 am, the 2015 seniors travelled down Dixie Highway and began rolling into the CovCath parking lot on all forms of wheeled transportation, from rollerblades to three-wheelers. Roll on, Colonels!
Representatives from the colleges awarding these scholarships were present to announce the awards and welcome the students to their respective schools.
Local Summer Service
Global Summer Games Jake Fischer (a senior in 2015-16) attended the World Cup Kendama Championships in Hatsukaichi, Japan, in July and placed 7th overall from a pool of 260+. Kendama is a simple Japanese toy that Jake has mastered with complicated tricks. His travel expenses for the trip to Japan were paid by sponsor Kendama-Co, based out of Denver, Colorado, and Jake was interviewed on WLWT prior to his departure (see link below). http://www.wlwt.com/news/jakefischer-interview/34120018
Over 20 CovCath students volunteered as classroom and field trip assistants with a new Covington Partners Out-of-School Time summer initiative. Most volunteer commitments were for a week of half days, but some did multiple weeks. It was a great way for Colonels to help in our home community while providing them with important leadership service to the youth in this new enrichment program.

Teacher of the Year Excerpted from Covington Catholic Times article by Jake Brueggeman. The 2014-15 Teacher of the Year, chosen by the seniors, was Mr. Al Hertsenberg. Congratulations to Coach Herts for winning this award yet again. The award signifies a teacher’s devotion and commitment to bettering students both spiritually and academically. Mr. Hertsenberg celebrated his 25th year of teaching at CovCath this year.

Another CCH Student Scores 36 on ACT Another CCH student earned the top composite score of 36 on the ACT college admission and placement exam. Lucas Timmerman, now a senior, achieved the mark this past spring. He is the son of Jerry and Jennifer Timmerman of Florence, KY, and a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary parish. Nationally, while the actual number of students earning a composite score of 36 varies from year to year, on average, less than one-tenth of 1 percent of students who take the ACT earn the top score. Among test takers in the high school graduating class of 2014, only 1,407 of nearly 1.85 million students earned a composite score of 36. While the achievement is significant and rare, Lucas was the third student at Covington Catholic to earn a composite score of 36 during the 2014-15 school year. 2015 Graduate Adrian Neff and 2015-16 Senior Logan Boyle also received a 36 on the ACT in the fall of 2014.
Colonel of the Year Excerpted from Covington Catholic Times article by Grant Guenther. At the end of the year, the seniors were asked to vote for a Colonel brother who has exemplified many great qualities of CovCath including academics, attitude, and social and athletic involvement. This year, the winner was Samuel Kathman, also the President of the Student Senate. Sam certainly was a good choice, as he is a dual sport athlete, does lots of community service, and (as the Senate President) is the main representative of our student body.

Colonels Conquer Europe Six students, one parent and two teachers embarked on a whirlwind tour of London, Paris, Florence and Rome early in June. From Beefeaters in London, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Michelangelo’s David in Florence, to the Colosseum in Rome, they saw it all. They ate loads of pizza and pasta, fish and chips and crepes. Highlights of the trip included riding the London Eye, climbing Sacré-Cœur in Montmartre, and attending a general audience with Pope Francis. They also enjoyed LOTS of gelato - they never passed a gelato shop without stopping in for more! Next year’s trip, open to all CCH students, alumni, and families, is an eight-day tour of Germany and the Alps. Contact Mrs. Julie Stengle for details.

It was founded three years ago by the Kentucky Science and Technology Corporation with the support of Governor Beshear’s office to make it a third Governor’s School program, thereby reaching teens across the state. GSE teaches students critical life and work skills of problem-solving, teamwork and iteration in an environment where it is safe to fail. Working in small business teams, students design and build a product prototype and learn the components of a business model. Emphasis is on the triple bottom line – focusing not only on profit but also on people and the planet. On the last day teams give oral business pitch presentations to a panel of business owners, investors and professionals.”

Days of Reflection Excerpted from Covington Catholic Times articles by Jake Brueggeman, Paul Huber and Austin Hussey The Freshman Day of Reflection was a terrific day for the freshmen to ponder their first year at CCH and reflect on their lives. The most powerful part of the day was when seven seniors gave speeches about their personal lives and experiences at Covington Catholic. They gave advice to the freshmen and asked them to learn from their mistakes and successes. They led freshmen through small group discussions that reflected upon the talks. The Sophomore Day of Reflection was led by Chandler Brooks. Six seniors gave talks on: family values and how decisions affect others; the importance of school and how it affects your future; the value of friendships and club involvement at school; social life and being yourself; and examples of how all these things have played out from one senior’s perspective. The Junior Day of Reflection was led by CCH religion teacher Mr. Rich Andolina. The focus was on chastity. It was very eyeopening as the juniors listened with respect and learned about the seriousness of the topic. The day was successful, and Coach A led an awesome Day of Reflection.

Wyoming Retreat Seventy-two members of the Class of 2017 travelled to the beautiful lands of northwest Wyoming for the annual CovCath sophomore retreat. Two separate groups of Colonels and their adult leaders made the trip, one in early June and the second in July. Besides taking in the majestic scenery of Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons, hiking mountain upon mountain, and enjoying events like horseback riding and a rodeo, the guys became closer with God and with each other through the retreat activities. One of the adult leaders on the trip, Mr. David Gronotte, Jr. (Class of 1993), shared the following from his experience: “I had the privilege of being a leader on the Covington Catholic Wyoming Retreat, and I wanted to send a quick note with some of my thoughts. First of all, I feel completely blessed that I had the opportunity to participate in this amazing experience for myself, the other adult leaders, and the incredible group of students that made the journey out West. The students behaved very well, and certainly represented the school and our community in the most positive way possible. All of the adult leaders received numerous compliments as we made our adventure throughout the week. The staff at the ranch repeatedly made comments such as, ‘I wish all of our visitors would behave like the Covington Catholic boys,’ and ‘I am so impressed by their manners, and how helpful and kind they are to each other.’ The flight attendants on each of our four flights also commented on how impressed they were with these young men, particularly because they were so polite and kind. The airport staff approached me to let me know that all of our students were so wonderful, using their manners and being polite
to everyone around them. They told me they wished all of their customers would behave like our young men did. When we went into the town of Dubois, WY, all the shop owners and workers made comments about how much they enjoyed having the Covington Catholic students there. They told me that they loved how well-behaved they always are. When we went to the Jackson Hole Rodeo, not only did the announcer love the fact that the guys would stand and do their cheers to get the crowd excited, but all the guests at the rodeo enjoyed them. Several people came up to talk with the students or one of the adult leaders to say how much they liked their spirit, and that they were respectful of the event and very polite. These young men also made a tremendous impression on everyone when we attended Mass at Our Lady of the Mountains in Jackson Hole. The priest, deacon and all the congregation were so happy to see us walk into Mass, and they commented to the adult leaders later how impressed they were with our students and they loved that all the students actively participated in the Mass. As you can imagine, these few examples made me feel so proud to be a part of something that is doing so many positive things. I loved every minute of our adventures, from the hikes to horseback riding to the rodeo to trips into town, but the lifelong impact the retreat had on these guys and me is the greatest part of this experience. Coach Hertsenberg and Mr. Lubbers did an amazing job leading these guys, and were great examples of how to be Christian men. Their leadership and excellent devotion to these students was inspiring to me, and also made me especially excited since I know that my two sons who will be attending CCH in the near future will get to benefit from their influence and example.”

Covington Catholic art teacher Mr. Tim Haders has given much to his students over his 30+ year career at CCH. This spring, former student Zach Holbrook (Class of 1995), led an effort for the Colonel community to give back to Mr. Haders’ family. Mr. Haders’ wife, Kathy, was recently diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. To help the Haders with the costs of home accommodations for her special needs, Zach launched a funding campaign that raised over $61,000 from 566 donors in two months’ time. One supporter posted the following on the funding site page: “Zach, this is so awesome! What a testament to the men and women that have taught all of you guys through the years at CCH, and of course, to Tim Haders. I am sure he is humble as always about this gesture, but what an honor for so many people to step up to this challenge. I for one am so proud of the men that they continue to turn out of this school and will always be a loyal fan and contributor.”

The tennis team experienced many firsts this season: won the NKAC Division I championship; finished undefeated in Northern Kentucky; won the 17th Region Title (14th consecutive); won the Sectional Championship for the first time; and was State Runner-Up for the second time. The thrill of these great accomplishments was only surpassed by the experience to host on our very own, on-campus, tennis complex. The team swept the Regional singles and doubles semi-finals on our own courts in front of a cheering crowd that was the talk of the tennis Austin Hussey teams in the state. Austin Hussey won the singles title for his fourth year over Colonel freshman Max Cook. Anthony Bosch and Blake Heimbrock fought hard to get by teammates Jake and Jared Haught to win the doubles title in a super-tie-break final. From the Advancement Director
Laura J. Sage, Ed.D. EDUCATING COLONELS…TODAY, TOMORROW, and for a LIFETIME Dear Alumni and Colonel Community, Since 1925, Covington Catholic High School has endeavored to educate young men spiritually, academically, physically, and socially. We believe every young man who desires a Covington Catholic education should have the opportunity. With this philosophy, the school has educated over 8,000 young men, providing each with an excellent education and the community with educated and responsible citizens. Since its founding, Covington Catholic has built a reputation of excellence that is still its standard today. To achieve our goal that every young man who desires a Covington Catholic education should have the opportunity, the school offers tuition assistance, work study program, and academic awards. In addition, as future technology needs increase and enrollment expands, CovCath will rise to the challenge of meeting these requirements. But, we need your help. These programs are funded through donations to Annual Appeal, General Endowment, Named Endowments, and Planned Giving, via a variety of methods that benefit TODAY, TOMORROW, and FOR A LIFETIME. TODAY. You can give TODAY by contributing to the Annual Appeal. The Annual Appeal kicks off at the beginning of the school year and funds the Tuition Assistance Program at CovCath. You can write a check, give electronically, or spread your donation out over 12 months by giving through Recurring Gifts. No matter which method you use to make your gift, your donations are put to immediate good use. As one of our recent graduates, Joe Marino (Class of 2015), said about his graduation, “I did not do this alone. This school is a gift.” TOMORROW. You can give to make sure that CovCath’s mission will continue TOMORROW. Consider setting up a Named Endowment. An Endowment allows the school to use the interest earned from your donation. The principal from your donation is never touched, thus allowing the gift to continue its impact into the future. FOR A LIFETIME. Consider including CovCath in your Planned Giving. It offers the opportunity to make a LIFETIME contribution and establish a personal legacy while also receiving tax and other financial benefits. There are many options that can be matched to your personal financial objectives and situation, including some with income payments back to the donor and also a charitable deduction. All of these gifts help to ensure a secure future for Covington Catholic. While these tools are critical to funding ongoing operational needs, capital campaigns raise funds for longerterm capital improvements to our facilities and structure. Gifts to a capital campaign may take a similar form - cash, other assets, endowments, planned giving, etc. - but they are applied to a defined set of improvements. You have the opportunity to give the gift of a CovCath education to current and future students. Your CovCath legacy can begin today, continue tomorrow, and last for a lifetime. Many blessings,
Laura J. Sage, Ed.D. Director of Advancement Covington Catholic Journal

Giving TODAY – ANNUAL APPEAL The Annual Appeal provides tuition assistance to our students and is distributed in the year of the contribution. These gifts are critical in enabling CovCath to provide a holistic educational experience to many current students. Joe Marino (Class of 2015) provided this perspective on what his CovCath experience, enabled by tuition assistance funded by Annual Appeal contributions, meant to him:

The Annual Appeal campaign kicks off in September with a mailing that will tell you more and request your support. Donations can be made at any time throughout the year in any amount. All donors to the Annual Appeal are recognized in the JOURNAL at the end of the year (see page 25 in this issue for the results of the 2014-15 campaign).

Giving TOMORROW – ENDOWMENTS Endowments provide needed future educational resources for Colonels. The current needs for tuition assistance are double the amount raised through our Annual Appeal and existing Endowments, and these needs continue to increase each year. Endowments provide you, the donor, with an opportunity to make a lasting contribution to students’ educational needs and establish a personal enduring legacy. You can contribute to the General Endowment or set up a Named Endowment with a (minimum) $10,000 contribution. If desired, donations can be made over a period of up to five years, culminating in the establishment of a Named Endowment honoring your family or a loved one. Examples of these types of gifts are shared below. Joe & Ginnie Schmidt Scholarship Endowment “We established an endowment at both CovCath and Notre Dame Academy because we liked the idea of endowed scholarships that continue to aid students with financial need. We, as well as our children, attended either CovCath or NDA. This was a great way to help future students and carry on the Catholic education tradition.” Ginnie & Joe Schmidt (CCH Class of 1961) Greg Keller Scholarship Endowment “I established an endowment to honor my longtime friend and fellow alum, Greg Keller. Greg was a CovCath honor student and athlete. He went on to earn three college degrees. Greg passed away in August of 2000 after a three year battle with Hodgkin’s disease. I felt the best way to honor his life was to establish an endowment in his name that would benefit CovCath’s new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) program. In my opinion, the STEM program is the most important discipline (aside from religion) that the school has ever sponsored. This program expands the career horizons of every young man in the program. I hope this endowment will help draw publicity about the program, garnering it more financial support, but also attracting bright students from around the area.
Scott McKinley (CCH Class of 1981) with members of the CCH Robotics Club.
Charles and Jane Summe Scholarship Endowment “We wanted to show our parents how much our Catholic education meant to us and also to show our appreciation for the sacrifices that they made in putting six Colonels through Covington Catholic. To that end, we decided to establish an Endowment at Covington Catholic in their name. It is a lasting legacy that recognizes our parents and pays tribute to the gift that they gave to us. The best part about an endowment is that it will continue to give each year, will help others enjoy the gift of a great Catholic education and will further the mission and goals of Covington Catholic.” Kurt Summe (CCH Class of 1983)
Class of 1949 Scholarship Endowment “I was happy to contribute to the Class of ’49 Endowment, along with my fellow classmates. I feel strongly that the success I have had in life, both spiritually and financially, has been due to the education I received at Covington Catholic.” George Brinkman (CCH Class of 1949) Note: Class of ’49 has raised a total of $100,000 for the Class of 1949 Scholarship Fund since it was established in June of 2014. It was started anonymously by a 1949 alum who challenged his fellow classmates to raise $75,000. Once the Class of 1949 reached the $75,000 goal, then they received a $25,000 challenge grant from another anonymous donor. They accomplished their goal in June of 2015. Covington Catholic Journal

Giving FOR A LIFETIME – PLANNED GIVING Planned Giving offers the opportunity to make a lifetime contribution and establish a personal legacy. It provides an array of options for donors of various means to support Covington Catholic High School while also receiving possible tax and other financial benefits. Unlike typical cash donations, gifts are often made from assets in your estate rather than disposable income. Some may provide income payments back to the donor, as well as charitable tax deductions or a better overall balancing of tax consequences for your estate. Some of the most common types of planned gifts are outlined below.
What

Beneficiary Designations
• S ome assets like Life Insurance, Insurance Annuities, IRAs, and Retirement Plans will allow the owner to designate CCH as a (partial or whole, primary or secondary) beneficiary, often enabling tax savings in the near and longerterm that can be re-invested for future income
Real Estate
• L ive in your home now, but make a major gift by donating it after your lifetime (and the lifetime of your spouse or other persons you choose to retain rights to live in the home), with significant potential current and longer-term (capital gains; estate) tax advantages
* To learn more about Planned Giving options, please consult with your personal financial and/or legal advisor(s). The following provides personal perspective from David C. Diedrich (Class of 1970) on how planned giving provided him a way to impact in a significant and long-lasting way: I recently revisited my estate planning documents and gave serious thought to how my donations could help the largest number of people and provide a long-term benefit, not just a short-term bandage. I came to two important realizations. One being I was truly blessed with great parents who provided the foundation of love, morality and guidance that forged the person I am; the second being the realization the most important foundational experience I had, other than

my parents, was my Catholic education. Covington Catholic has positively impacted generations of families, and continues to do so, year after year, opening a window to the world of possibilities for those who attend. I realized this is where young men will be helped by my donation, and that my gift will be used judiciously and administered with integrity. I decided to make Covington Catholic a significant beneficiary in my
Estate’s final distribution and established an Endowed Scholarship to be forward-funded at my passing. There is a tremendous sense of gratification received from contributing to the education of these young men. I urge you to consider Covington Catholic in your Charitable Giving and Planning. Please do what you can, you’ll be glad you did. All of us together can make a big difference!

Remembering Dennis Griffin (1942-2015)
Mr. Dennis B. Griffin entered into eternal life peacefully in April, 2015. Throughout his life, he humbly established a broad and deep legacy as a loving family man, innovative entrepreneur and business leader, community visionary, and extremely generous philanthropist. By all accounts, he saw his gifts of time, talent and treasure as ways to enable other people and organizations to achieve their objectives. Covington Catholic High School has been the very grateful recipient of Mr. Griffin’s and his family’s generosity in countless ways, including the acquisition of land adjacent to the CovCath campus. That purchase set the stage for other enhancements and expansions now underway that support the delivery of our Mission into the future. Mr. Griffin and his wife, Joyce, were honored as the 2010 Northern Kentuckians of the Year. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
WILLIAMS FUND SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED Todd A. Sheets, Jr., a 2015 graduate of Covington Catholic High School, was the recipient of the $5,000 Williams Fund College Scholarship awarded by the Kenny and Brian Williams Fund. Ken Williams, Sr., who is on the board of directors for the fund named after his sons, and David Thiel, Jr., also a member of the fund’s board of directors and a 1986 Covington Catholic graduate and classmate of Ken Williams, Jr. (“Kenny”), presented Todd with the award. The Kenny and Brian Williams Fund was founded by David Thiel and six other friends of the Williams brothers as a way to honor them after their tragic deaths. Kenny died in 1994 after falling from a Cincinnati skywalk. Brian died in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. The brothers are Covington Catholic alumni who were known for their spirit, athleticism, academic excellence and zeal for life.

PFETZER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED Steven Faris, a 2015 graduate of Covington Catholic High School, was the recipient of the $1,000 Jeffrey A. Pfetzer Memorial Scholarship. Mr. Michael Cayse presented Steven with the award at the school’s Baccalaureate Luncheon on May 19, 2015. The Pfetzer Memorial Scholarship was founded in 2004 in memory of Jeffrey Pfetzer (CCH Class of 2001). Jeffrey died from a tragic fall in 2002 at the University of Kentucky where he completed his freshman year of college. His family and friends established this scholarship fund as a way to recognize
a CCH student who embodies the qualities and character of Jeffrey. Steven Faris attended St. Agnes School previous to CCH and is the son of Travis and Michelle Faris. Steven will attend Northern Kentucky University, where he also received the Kentucky Governor’s Scholarship. He was selected for the Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts in 2014. At Covington Catholic High School, he was a member of the Art Club and Magnified Giving Club and earned a CCH varsity letter for community service. Covington Catholic Journal

2015 Northern Kentuckian of the Year Earlier this year, Andrew J. “Andy” VonLehman (CCH Class of 1971) was named the 2015 Northern Kentuckian of the Year. The recognition luncheon was held at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center and was attended by 500 friends and supporters of Mr. VonLehman and Covington Catholic, including the Most Reverend Roger J. Foys. Artwork by CCH students was displayed at a reception prior to the luncheon, and the CCH Chamber Choir performed during lunch. The Northern Kentuckian of the Year Award was established in 1996 to recognize individuals who have distinguished themselves as leaders dedicated to the economic and social well-being of the Northern Kentucky region. After another very successful year, the event has now raised over $1,000,000 for Covington Catholic High School’s tuition assistance program.

Sue Finke Retirement Sue Finke has long committed herself to the benefit of CovCath as a volunteer, a parent, and, for the past 10+ years, as the Director of Advancement. Sue is now moving to another exciting phase of her life, being a daily caregiver to her grandchildren, and finding many other ways to enjoy her family. During her time as the Director of Advancement, Sue’s leadership has created value and opportunity for Covington Catholic. From her networks and her ability to tell the CovCath story, she has brought willing donors to fund many great assets and programs for our school. In the past couple of years, Sue has led the preliminary phases of our capital campaign, which is positively poised to deliver great additions and enhancements to our school. Notably and hopefully, these include the creation of the recently dedicated new tennis complex, renovation of the athletic field and stadium, the establishment of a new classroom wing for the new Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) program, and growth in our endowment to support teacher excellence and student scholarships/tuition support. Many thanks and best wishes to Sue!

As a redshirt freshman in 2013, Halpin played in all 12 games and started seven after entering the season as WKU’s No. 2 option. Behind a starting Halpin, WKU went 6-1 in 2013 as he anchored an offensive line that helped former All-American running back Antonio Andrews set a WKU single-season record for rushing yards (1,730). Quarterback Brandon Doughty also established a single-season passing yardage record (2,857) with Halpin under center in 2013 before shattering his own mark with 4,830 yards in 2014.
Call to Action: Colonel “Young Alumni” Hi, this is Will Huber, CCH Class of 2012. I have only been away from CovCath for a couple of years, but was excited by the opportunity to come back this summer as an intern. I have been working to establish a Young Alumni Program focused on alums who have graduated since 2008. The objective of a Young Alumni Program is to provide a network to truly leverage the power of being a CCH Colonel. A group of young alums will be meeting soon to discuss the specific types of unique events and activities we will create – whether social, spiritual, educational, professional, or a combination thereof. We all have experiences that we can share to help our CCH alumni brothers and continue the spirit that will not die. Whether you are in Northern Kentucky, or somewhere else, I would love to hear from you. We will link you in no matter where you are! If you’d like to be part of our committee, or just want to be informed of our progress, email me at whuber@ covcath.org or call the CCH Alumni office at (859) 448-2312.

From the Alumni Director
Richard Dickmann ’80 As we enter the 2015-16 school year, Covington Catholic’s student population will exceed 600 for the first time since 1972. We are working hard to ensure that this growth is well managed to deliver the positive outcomes it can bring. Over the last 15 years, CovCath has experienced significant enrollment growth. This trend has led to the establishment of a planning and construction committee to envision future school and facility requirements to better meet the needs of our students. The outcomes include new and enhanced academic programs, such as the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math program (STEM), new facilities and an overall “Campus Master Plan,” all intended to support sustainable excellence in the pursuit of the CCH Mission. This progressive and disciplined attitude has carried over into greater spiritual experiences, academic and athletic achievements, and social growth and service opportunities for our students. We have celebrated results and anticipate continued positive growth in all components of our mission and believe they work synergistically to help develop well-rounded and accomplished young men. I know that the administration is doing everything in its power to make Covington Catholic the best school in the tri-state. I believe that if everyone could see what I have seen over the past five years, all would be very surprised at just how much CovCath does with so little. However, the fact is that tuition revenues only cover approximately 75% of the cost to run the school. Every Catholic high school in the country relies on its alumni for annual and ongoing support. We greatly appreciate the donors who give to the Annual Appeal, but are hopeful that the number of people who give can be increased. In my role as Director of Alumni Relations, I routinely hear variations of the following questions from alumni: • When are WE going to get lights? • Why can’t WE have facilities like theirs? My first reaction when I hear these questions is a positive one in that WE is always part of the conversation. As alums, WE feel a strong connection to our school and WE envision ourselves as being part of the present and future successes and needs of our alma mater. That mindset is necessary for CovCath to continue to accomplish its mission of educating young men for generations to come and providing these future leaders with the necessary tools to make this mission possible. My second thought is that WE as alums must continue to channel this mindset into action, thereby contributing our talents, our time, and our treasure to this mission of which WE are a vital component. During our last capital campaign that resulted in the completion of the academic building, WE as alums did not contribute during the silent or public phase to the degree hoped or, possibly, to our abilities. As WE continue with this present campaign, I challenge us to make to make a larger impact this time, one that is commensurate with our concern for our school. Covington Catholic Alumni rank amongst the best when it comes to supporting causes and donating to non-profits. We are a very generous group of men. Alumni can play a much larger role in contributing to an institution that develops our young men into future community leaders and positive role models for generations to come. WE are CCH Alumni and WE can impact the future of Covington Catholic in a positive way. WE can provide the lights, the facilities and the winning Spirit that will not die!
