Laying a firm foundation for a healthy church means seeking, knowing, loving and proclaiming Christ (Phil 3). How are you building your foundation in Christ today? A Bold FAITH in God’s Faithfulness “And without faith, it is impossible to please God because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” – Hebrews 11:6 (NIV) A bold faith opposes doubt which slows us, opposes fear which paralyses us and opposes apathy which derails us. Bold faith in God’s faithfulness means our allegiance is unto God. Luke 6:46 says, “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord’ and not do what I tell you?” There is a holy dissatisfaction with our lukewarmness, fear and apathy. Our bold faith in God will see Him restore our spiritual zeal and do far greater things beyond Vision 2028 (Psa 80). How can you be bold in your faith in Christ today? How about B.L.E.S.S.-ing those around you who have yet to know Him? A Burning Focus Towards FRUITFULNESS for God “…whose designer and builder is God …” – Hebrews 11:10b (ESV) God is the Designer and has a destiny for us! God is the Builder and has the resources! He showed us a promise in Isaiah 37:30-31, “And this shall be a sign for you: this year you shall eat what grows of itself, and in the second year what springs from that. Then in the third year sow and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat their fruit. And the surviving remnant of the house of Judah shall again take root downward and bear fruit upward.”Authentic discipleship is about people, not just programmes. Intentional Disciplemaking is about reproducing people of A Certain Kind, not just attending an event. In the process of making disciples, we must not lose sight of the end result of fruitfulness. Will you pray for God to make you fruitful as you abide in Him daily? Are you ready for the harvest of fruitfulness that He has promised? This year as we “Return to Our Foundation”, Covenant EFC’s pulpit and Devotional Journal will be mostly based on the books of Ezra and Haggai. May you have a blessed year of studying, practising and teaching God’s Word (Ezr 7:10)!

Around 85.32% of the population in Thailand are Buddhists. Church growth has been slow despite nearly 200 years of Protestant work, but in recent years there has been growing interest in the Gospel and increased unity among the churches.
Praise God: ■ That the Thai churches are united by the vision to plant 80,000 churches, one in each village, through intercession, evangelism and wise use of resources.

Pray: ■ For Christian leaders to have the vision, integrity and wisdom to lead their churches by example. For more leaders who are adequately trained to disciple new believers. ■ Against a tendency to be lukewarm, that the believers will be convicted to be holy in an environment of sin, vice and corruption. ■ That believers will persevere despite opposition and social pressure against converting from Buddhism. ■ For more workers to win and disciple the largely marginalised tribal people. Some are receptive to the Gospel and are responding in significant numbers. ■ For Covenant EFC’s farming projects in Eden Ministries — for good seasonal weather, bountiful harvests and a rich spiritual harvest. There is a growing network of local farmers and increasing opportunities to witness to them.

The Celebration with Joy Scripture

Observation
How does the celebration with joy in verses 15 to 16 compare with that in Ezra 3:10-13 (with Ezr 4:1-5, 24)?
Deeper Reflection
he completion of the temple (v.15) is followed by “dedication” (v.16). The dedication is a celebration “with joy”. On the surface, “there was little to account for the joyous nature of the occasion”1. The temple is inferior in glory in comparison with Solomon’s temple (Hag 2:3) and “especially the magnificent temples of the ancient Near East”2. But God’s people “celebrated with joy”, because with eyes of faith they could discern the truth that lay behind the physical structure: God is with them. God’s promise and assurance of “I am with you” and “My Spirit is abiding in your midst” (Hag 2:4-5) is the “all that matters” reality that they live in. The presence of God is what this temple is all about. Some 20 years ago, they laid the temple’s foundation with celebration and joy (Ezr 3:10-13). However, it was a short-lived one. But now, the temple is completed – by God’s Word (Ezr 5:1-2; 6:14), under God’s watch (Ezr 5:5) and by God working through the Persians (Ezr 5:6 – 6:13). And they celebrated with joy, because God is for them – despite the long years of setbacks. Because God is with us and for us, there is the hope of celebration with joy in the face of our setbacks (cf. Psa 30:4-5).

The Offering of Sacrifices Scripture

Observation What can you learn about God as revealed in the sacrifices offered to Him in verse 17, 1 Kings 8:62-64 and Leviticus 5:5-7, 11?
Deeper Reflection
he dedication of the temple is marked by the offering of sacrifices (v.17). Dedication to God is an act of giving to God. The dedication service follows the pattern of Solomon’s3 (1 Kin 8). However, the offering of “100 bulls, 200 rams, 400 lambs” (v.17) is “incomparably outshone”4 by Solomon’s “22,000 oxen and 120,00 sheep” (1 Kin 8:63). But does the number matter to God? Does God take delight in the sacrifices offered at the dedication of the Second Temple any less than in Solomon’s? God requires a lamb or goat for a sin offering (Lev 5:6). But, God is a realistic God. He makes provision for those who “cannot afford a lamb”: They can offer “two turtledoves or two pigeons” (Lev 5:7). The realistic God is also aware of those whose “means are insufficient” even “for two turtledoves”; and for them, a grain offering will do (Lev 5:11). Each of us has different capacities in offering ourselves to God (cf. Rom 12:3). Let us not compare or judge, but recognise and accept what we ourselves can offer and what others can offer. But this should still be our spirit: “I will not offer burnt offerings to the LORD my God which cost me nothing” (2 Sam 24:24). But for some of us, that could be just “a grain offering” (Lev 5:11).

Application What changes in perspective and attitude do I need to make in recognising and accepting what I can offer to God and what others can offer?
Prayer O God, everything in heaven and earth are Yours. I am Yours – all of me; for You have created me, and redeemed me with an infinite price. Deeper Reflection
hy is there a “sin offering” in the dedication of the temple (v.17), but not in Solomon’s dedication service (1 Kin 8:62-64)? The “sin offering” is for cleansing of sin. The people of God recognise the sin that had forced them, who had worshipped at Solomon’s temple, into exile to Babylon, as well as God’s mercy that has now brought them back. They have now returned to God to be redeemed, restored and rebuilt. And what is the theological relationship between “sin offering” and “dedication” of the temple (which presupposes and includes the dedication of the people who dedicate the temple)? Cleansing from sin and consecration to God go together. There can be no consecration without cleansing, and cleansing must necessarily be followed by consecration. The focal point of cleansing and consecration is the temple, which points to the communion with God in His presence. The temple is where God dwells among His people and where He meets with them and speaks to them (Exo 29:42-46). When we “walk in the light” (consecration), we have “fellowship with God” (communion) and “the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin” (cleansing) (1 Jn 1:6-7): These three all go together.

Observation What is the significance of “for all Israel” (v.17) when it was only people from the tribes of Judah, Benjamin and Levi, who returned to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple (Ezr 1:5)?
Deeper Reflection
n the dedication of the temple, “12 male goats” are offered “as a sin offering for all Israel” “corresponding to the number of the tribes of Israel” (v.17). But, only three tribes – Judah, Benjamin and Levi – returned to Jerusalem, as a chastened and purified remnant, to rebuild the temple (Ezr 1:5). Nevertheless, God sees them, by the theological principle of corporate solidarity, as one whole people of God – “all Israel” representing the 12 tribes. “All Israel” has its theological continuity to the Church, the new covenant Israel (compare Exo 19:4-6 with 1 Pet 2:9; Jer 31:31-32 with Heb 8:6-9). God’s ideal is that He works out His purposes through a faithful “all Israel”. But God recognises the reality that “all Israel” consists of a mixture of the committed and uncommitted, the mature and immature, and that oftentimes, He finds only a faithful remnant that says, “Here am I! Send me!” (cf. Isa 6:8). But this is never too incomplete for God to work out His purposes as through “all Israel”. God works in the eschatological already-and-not-yet reality: The Church is the fullness of Christ and yet growing towards the fullness of Christ (Eph 1:22-23; 4:11-13).

Deeper Reflection
zra 4:8 to 6:18 was originally written in Aramaic. Aramaic was used in the Babylonian and Persian empires as a diplomatic and commercial language 6. Prominent in Ezra 4:8-6:18 is the dominance of Persian royal power over Israel’s work of rebuilding – in both opposing and approving the work. The Persian dominance takes up 45 out of the 52 verses in the long narrative, as shown in this outline: Persians opposing the work (Ezr 4:8-24), Israel resuming the work (Ezr 5:1-2), Persians approving the work (Ezr 5:3 – 6:13) and Israel completing the work (Ezr 6:14-18). It is theologically significant that this narrative in Aramaic begins with “a letter against Jerusalem” (v.8) but ends with “as it is written in the book of Moses” in the dedication of the temple (Ezr 6:18). God has the final say. In the rebuilding of the temple, the Word of God is the first word: it begins with “in order to fulfil the word of the LORD” (Ezr 1:1). And now at its completion and dedication, the Word of God is the final word. Opposition may stop the work of God (Ezr 4:24), but not the Word of God (Ezr 5:1-2; 6:14). Just as for Paul, he may be imprisoned, “but the word of God is not imprisoned” (2 Tim 2:9).

Do you also use your body to honour Him, for example, doing good works and completing your school work diligently? Romans 12:1 says that using our bodies to honour God is a form of worship to Him. A New Start with the Passover Scripture

Observation What is the significance of the long journey of rebuilding the temple in Ezra 1 to 6 climaxing with the Passover (vv.19-21)?

he over-20-year-long journey of rebuilding the temple in Ezra 1 to 6 (538 – 516 B.C.7) climaxed with the Passover (vv.19-21). The Passover was last observed in King Josiah’s days (2 Chron 35:1-19). The Passover is observed on “the fourteenth of the first month” of the new year (v.19). When God first instituted the Passover for Israel, God said, “This month shall be the beginning of months for you…the first month of the year to you” (Exo 12:1-3). The first Passover marked “the beginning” of Israel, who would be delivered from Egyptian bondage to become a covenant people of God (Exo 19:3-6). For the Jews who had just completed rebuilding the temple, the Passover was of great significance to them, as they recalled their past covenant unfaithfulness to God that led to their exile in Babylon, and how they had returned to their land and rebuilt the temple. The Passover marked a redemptive new beginning for them. We all have committed covenant unfaithfulness to God, somehow or other – for “we all stumble in many ways” (Jas 3:2). But we can always have a redemptive new beginning in “Christ our Passover Lamb” who “has been sacrificed” (1 Cor 5:7).

The Passover Lamb Must Be Sacrificed Scripture Luke 22:7-20

What is the significance of verse 7 which states that the Passover lamb “had to” be sacrificed, in the context of Jesus eating the Passover with His disciples and instituting the Lord’s Supper (vv.15-20)?
Deeper Reflection
t was in eating the Passover with His disciples that Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper (vv.15-20; cf. 1 Cor 11:23-26). Jesus’ eating of the Passover with His disciples anticipates His death on the cross where “My body…is given for you” (v.19) and “My blood” “is poured out for you” (v.20). It is not without theological significance that Luke introduces the particular day that the Passover is to be eaten as the day “on which the Passover lamb must (or, had to) be sacrificed” (v.7). Neither Mark nor Matthew introduce this day in this way (Mk 14:12; Matt 26:17). A key Greek word that Luke uses in relation to Jesus in his Gospel is dei (“must”, or “has to”). It speaks of the “divine must” in Jesus’ life and mission. Jesus “had to be in My Father’s house” (Lk 2:49). He “must suffer many things and be rejected” (Lk 9:22). He “must journey on” to Jerusalem (Lk 13:33) where “the Passover lamb must be sacrificed” (v.7). Clearly, Luke is saying that this Passover lamb is Jesus. God takes upon Himself the “divine must” to save us from our sin. God can choose not to. And this “divine must” inevitably has to lead to the outcome where “the Passover lamb must be sacrificed”. For “without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness” (Heb 9:22).

he Jews “observed the Feast of Unleavened Bread seven days with joy” (v.22) as they observed the Passover (vv.19-21; cf. Exo 12:6, 17-18). The Passover speaks of redemption, while Unleavened Bread speaks of sanctification. Paul calls the Corinthians to get rid of “the old bread leavened with malice and wickedness” and keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread with “the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth”, because “Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed” (1 Cor 5:7-8, NIV). We are redeemed for discipleship, and discipleship is redemptive in nature. Thus, the Passover and Unleavened Bread go together. One cannot do without the other. For the Jews who had rebuilt the temple, the Passover is a redemptive new beginning, and Unleavened Bread is a new beginning of consecration to God. The first Unleavened Bread is called “the bread of affliction” (Deut 16:3), by which Israel remembered God’s deliverance of them from the Egyptian affliction (Exo 12:17). Now in the new exodus, the Jews consecrate themselves to God with gratitude and gladness for their deliverance from the Babylonian affliction. Consecration to God is a delight, not a dread.

urification and separation marked the people of God as they observed the redemptive Passover: priests and Levites “had purified themselves together; all of them were pure” (v.20) and “all those who had separated themselves from the impurity of the nations of the land” (v.21). It is practising the theology of the inseparable redemption-sanctification, which has its theological roots in Israel’s origin as a nation. The Passover and Feast of Unleavened Bread are observed together (Exo 12:5-6, 17-18). Only those who are circumcised can eat the Passover (Exo 12:43-49). It was in commanding Abraham to “walk before Me and be blameless” (Gen 17:1-2) that God gave him the command of circumcision (Gen 17:9-14), failing which is breaking the covenant (v.14). The circumcision that God requires is circumcision of the heart to love Him wholeheartedly (Deut 30:6). It is in conjunction with the command of observing the Unleavened Bread that God gives the command: “Sanctify to Me every firstborn” (Exo 13:1-3). Passover, Unleavened Bread, circumcision and setting apart every firstborn – all these boil down to what biblical Christianity is all about: “Follow Me” (Matt 9:9; Jn 1:43).

he whole narrative of Ezra 1 to 6 begins and ends with the same theological note: “the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia” (v.1) and “the LORD… had turned the heart of the king of Assyria [referring to Cyrus14] towards them” (Ezr 6:22). This “sandwich” structure implies that “all that has been narrated in between [v.1 to Ezr 6:22] has been the activity of God, however much its causation and outworking may seem to have developed on the purely human plane. A story that could have been told simply in terms of imperial policy (Ezr 1), national feeling (Ezr 3), petty provincial feuding (Ezr 4), bureaucratic oversights (Ezr 5) and royal generosity (Ezr 6) is only fully told as a story about the action of God. He is the one who has ‘stirred up’ Cyrus (v.1), ‘stirred the spirit’ of the returning exiles (Ezr 1:5), continued His covenanted mercies (Ezr 3:11), raised up prophets to encourage the people (Ezr 5:1), set His eye upon the elders of the Jews (Ezr 5:5), ‘turned the heart’ of Cyrus toward them (Ezr 6:22), and brought about the completion of the temple (Ezr 6:15)”15. Ezra 1 to 6 points to “the unseen control of the God of Israel”16, whose “unchanging purposes are worked out in ever-changing circumstances”17.

similar phrase occurs in the beginning of Ezra 1 to 6 in Cyrus’ decree (Ezr 1:1-4) and in the conclusion: “the house of the LORD, the God of Israel” (Ezr 1:3) and “the house of God, the God of Israel” (Ezr 6:22). In particular, God is referred to as “the God of Israel” – the covenant God. In biblical theology, God’s covenant with His people and His covenant love (steadfast love) towards them are inseparably intertwined (e.g. Psa 89:28, 33-34). In one way, theologically, Ezra 1 to 6 is the story of how God’s “steadfast love endures forever toward Israel” (Ezr 3:10-11, ESV). Psalm 136 is a psalm of thanksgiving (Psa 136:1-3, 26), and for one singular reason: “His steadfast love endures forever” – which is repeated in all the 26 verses. Israel’s pilgrimage from the exodus (Psa 136:10-15), to possessing the land (Psa 136:16-22) is filled with the assurance that “His steadfast love endures forever” at every point of their journey. This is a theological picture of our discipleship journey. Even in our weakness and humiliation, or when we are down, God is there with us, for “His steadfast love endures forever” (Psa 136:23). And we are securely enveloped by our Creator and the Ruler of all, who loves us with His unfailing, unchanging and undying covenant love (Psa 136:1-9, 26).

Fill two mineral water bottles with drinking water. In one of the bottles, add in some dirt and mix it well. Show both bottles to your family and friends, and ask them which they prefer to drink from.

LEARNING POINT
Unclean water can cause you to fall sick. Water needs to be purified before it is fit for drinking. Similarly, an unclean heart can cause you to do or say things that will hurt yourself and others. In the Old Testament, the Israelites sinned against God when they lived according to the ways of people who didn’t worship God. This happened after they mingled with them for too long. The Israelites were not careful in preventing their hearts from becoming unclean through the influence of wrong ways. That is why Ezra and the people “separated themselves from the unclean practices of their Gentile neighbours to seek the Lord” (v.21) so that they could purify their hearts. We must also purify our hearts by following God’s ways, not the wrong practices that go against them.

Temple Without Torah Scripture

Observation What is the significance of the expression “Now after these things” (Ezr 7:1) in bridging verses 13 to 22 and Jeremiah 7:1-10?
Deeper Reflection
fter these things” (Ezr 7:1) refers to the completion and dedication of the temple and celebration of the Passover (vv.13-22); thus, bridging Ezra 1 to 6 and 7 to 10 with a 60-year gap in between18. Thus, “after these things” also signifies “the divine timing”19. 60 years is a long time. But the Lord is a God who waits, purposefully and patiently. Ezra 1 to 6 and 7 to 10 show two historical movements with theological significance: Reconstruction of the temple (Ezr 1-6) must necessarily be followed by reformation through the Torah (Ezr 7-10). Ezra, who leads in this reformation, is a man of the Torah (Ezr 7:6, 10). The temple cannot be without the Torah. The temple is incomplete without the Torah. The people of God in Jeremiah’s days find security against the Babylonian threat in the temple: “This is the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD” (Jer 7:4). But, to God these are “deceptive words”. Why? They worship God (Jer 7:2), but are not living by His Word (Jer 7:3, 5-11). Temple without Torah. God seeks “true worshippers” who alone can worship Him “in the Spirit and in truth” (Jn 4:23-24, NIV), because they who “continue in My word” are “truly disciples of Mine” (Jn 8:31).

zra 7 to 10 begins with the priestly linage of Ezra that traces back to Aaron (vv.1b-5). It seeks to establish “the legitimate authority of Ezra”21 as a priestly scribe (v.6, Ezr 7:11). The genealogy also showed the historical and theological connection of the theme of temple and priesthood: • Seven high priests to the destruction of the temple: Seraiah to Amariah (v.1c-3a) • Azariah (v.3b) – the first high priest in Solomon’s Temple (1 Chron 6:10) • Seven high priests before the construction of the temple: Meraioth to Eleazar (vv.3c-5b) • Aaron (v.5c) – first high priest of the Tabernacle (Exo 40:1, 12-13)22 Ezra as a priestly scribe played a vital role in the “reconstitution of the Mosaic system”23 (v.6 – “the law of Moses”) in the reconstructed temple (as seen in Ezr 7-8). God is in the genealogy, even though He is not mentioned. God faithfully preserves the temple and the priesthood (cf. Ezr 2:36-42), despite the unfaithfulness of His people that led to the destruction of Solomon’s temple. God providentially prepares Ezra for his crucial role at the right time (“after these things”, v.1). In Jesus’ days, the temple and the priesthood were corrupt (Mk 11:15-17; 15:1-3, 6-11). But Jesus Himself is the ultimate temple (Jn 2:13-21) and high priest (Heb 7:23-27).

Competent in the Word Scripture Ezra 7:6-10
Observation What is the significance of Ezra’s journey from Babylon to Jerusalem (vv.6b-9) sandwiched between Ezra and the Word of God (vv. 6b and 10) in the context of verses 6b to 10?

zra’s journey from Babylon to Jerusalem was mentioned four times in four verses (vv.6b-9). And sandwiching Ezra’s journey was: Ezra was “skilled in the law of Moses” (v.6a) and “Ezra set his heart to study the law of the LORD…” (v.10). The Word of God was central in Ezra’s journey. Ezra was “skilled in the law of Moses” (v.6a). He was competent in the Word of God. The word “skilled” in Hebrew is “literally ‘rapid’”24, which suggests “a quickness of grasp and ease of movement amid this complex material [‘the law of Moses’] which was the fruit of his devoted study [v.10]”25. When we read the Scriptures, we find ourselves in two inescapable realities: we interpret the Scriptures and we theologise from Scripture – rightly or wrongly. Hence, interpreting the Scriptures properly and correctly is of paramount importance. But there is this sad reality: “It is ironic that though there has never been a day when Bible study has been so accessible, with study Bibles, attractively produced notes and handbooks, not to mention the growing volume of audio-visual material, yet ignorance of the Bible is so profound.”26 We have no excuse to be ignorant or shallow in knowing and understanding God’s Word (see Lk 12:48b).

Prayer Lord, all arenas of life require skill and competency, and we seek to be knowledgeable in them. But it is so strange that we do not apply this attitude when it comes to what is most important in life — the Scriptures. o be competent in the Word we must first be committed to the Word. Wholehearted commitment: “Ezra had set his heart to…” (v.10) the devotion, dedication and determination of his heart towards the Word of God. Holistic commitment: Ezra’s commitment to God’s Word encompasses study, practice and teaching, in that order. The word for “study” is literally “to seek, search”27, implying that Ezra “spent time searching through the instructions in the Mosaic law books to find out what God had decreed”28. Ezra’s commitment to study hard “suggests that a simple, uneducated, off-the-cuff interpretation was not his ideal”29. To “practice” implies “acceptance or internalisation of God’s truth into a person’s belief and behaviour pattern”30. Study and teaching without practice is hypocrisy. Practice and teaching without study can lead to heresy. But teaching is “the natural product”31 of both study and practice. What we teach ought to be what we have first lived, and what we have lived we ought to have first made sure of in the Scriptures. Yet, true teachers are also imperfect but growing learners and “livers” of the Word. They teach after they have lived, and they learn to live as they teach.

Complete in the Word Scripture

Deeper Reflection
erse 10 shows a person complete in the Word of God – which is also portrayed in Hebrews 5:11 to 6:1. Study the Word: The believers whom the writer of Hebrews addressed were not growing. They were still spiritual infants who “need milk” and could not take “solid food” which is “for the mature” (Heb 5:12-14). Their immaturity is spiritual-intellectual immaturity. There were truths that the writer found “hard to explain” to them (Heb 5:11), because they found it hard to understand. Understanding the Word is spiritual-intellectual in nature, which we must grow in. The head (intellectual) and heart (spiritual) dichotomy is a false dichotomy. To understand the Word, we must study the Word. Practise the Word: When we “practise” the Word, our “senses” will be “trained to discern good and evil” and true and false (Heb 5:14). Discernment is a mark of maturity. The antithesis of discernment is being “tossed here and there by waves and every wind of doctrine” (Eph 4:14). Teach the Word: We are to grow to a stage where “by this time you ought to be teachers” (Heb 5:12). Teaching the Word is a basic ministry of every growing Christian. This is disciplemaking – “teaching them to observe” the Word of God (Matt 28:19-20).

ing Solomon gave gifts to the queen of Sheba out of “his royal bounty” (1 Kin 10:3), and King Ahasuerus supplied plentiful wine to his subjects out of “the king’s bounty” (Esth 1:7). The “king’s bounty” is literally “the king’s hand”. So, “the hand of God” is God’s royal bounty32 – which was upon Ezra (vv.6, 9). The phrase also denotes God’s permanent grace, favour and help resting on His people33. We can be sure of the hand of God resting upon us when we keep a threefold commitment to God. Commitment to the will of God: King Artaxerxes “granted” Ezra “all that he requested” and he “came to Jerusalem” successfully, “because the good hand of his God was upon him” (vv.6, 9). Ezra was on a mission that God had called him to. Commitment to the Word of God: God’s hand was upon Ezra (v.9) “because Ezra had set his heart to study…to practice…to teach” the Word of God (v.10). Commitment to walking with God: Twice, it is said that the divine hand upon Ezra was the hand of “his God” (vv.6, 9). “His God” speaks of the Lord and Ezra having a close personal relationship. In Ezra’s first person account, it is “my God” (Ezr 7:28).

We need to grow in knowing and trusting who God is, as well as growing in our character to be like Jesus. Listening to the sermon or Bible stories shared by our church leaders can help us know about God’s Word. But reading, memorising and studying God’s Word will help us to grow more. So let’s take the time and effort to dig deep into His Word, just as if we were searching for hidden treasures!

“It’s Good that I’m Afflicted” Scripture
Ezra 1:1-5; 7:1-13
Observation What is the significance of the revival movement in the two rebuilding returns starting in Babylon instead of Jerusalem (vv.1-5 and Ezr 7:1-13)?
Deeper Reflection
zra-Nehemiah tells of three rebuilding returns to Jerusalem. Zerubbabel led in the first return to rebuild the temple (Ezr 1-6), Ezra led in the second return to rebuild God’s people through the Word of God (Ezr 7-10) and Nehemiah led in the third return to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. There is one significant phenomenon common in all the three returns: “The flames of revival were kindled and fanned not in the environs of Jerusalem but in the exilic setting of Babylon.”34 The returning exiles “who had personally experienced the trauma of exile were the seedbed from which the restored community would grow”35. The Psalmist in Psalm 119 experienced revival out of suffering (Psa 119:50, 67, 71-72). He “went astray” from God; and for that he “was afflicted” (Psa 119:67a). It was a redemptive affliction. For it was in “my affliction” that “Your word has revived me” (Psa 119:50). So, he could say, “It is good for me that I was afflicted” (Psa 119:71a). For it was through affliction that he learned God’s Word (Psa 119: 71), which “revived” him, so that “now I keep Your word” (Psa 119:67), and God’s Word is “better to me than thousands of gold and silver pieces” (Psa 119:72). We must return to the Word to be revived by the Word.

Prayer The only wise God, who is good, whose steadfast love and faithfulness endure forever, You cause all things, including afflictions, to work together for good. ing Artaxerxes sent Ezra to Jerusalem with three responsibilities pertaining to the law of God. He was to investigate the Jews in Judah regarding how closely they followed the law of God in their temple worship (v.14)37, to “appoint magistrates and judges” to “judge…all those who know the laws of your God” and to “teach anyone who is ignorant of them” (vv.25-26). King Artaxerxes made a policy “of allowing subject nations to read their own writings and follow their own laws and customs”38, and “his actions were helping to preserve the word of God for future generations”39 of Israel. It is ironic that the Word of God which many kings of Judah and Israel failed to keep, was now being given official authorisation by a pagan king! When the words of God written on a scroll were read to King Jehoiakim, he cut the scroll and threw it into the fire that was in the brazier (Jer 36:1-8, 20-23). But God commanded Jeremiah to write again “all the words of the book” which Jehoiakim had destroyed, “and many other words were added to them” (Jer 36:32). The post-exilic people of God declared: “the word of our God endures forever” (Isa 40:8).

Living as God Intends Scripture

Observation What are the themes in verses 11 to 14, 15 to 24 and 25 to 26?

zra was sent to Jerusalem “at the self-centred request of the king”40 – “so that there will be no wrath against the kingdom of the king and his sons” (v.23). But as far as Ezra and “his God” are concerned, it was a God-centred mission. The sandwich structure of the pagan king’s decree (vv.11-26) presents a theological paradigm of the life God intends for His people to live: Word of God (v.14); Worship to God – the gathering and transportation of gifts, funding and reception of vessels from the king and the residents of Babylon and of the province Beyond the River for the temple (vv.15-24); and Word of God (vv.25-26). Worship to God is what we live for. The theme of worship is at the heart of the decree, taking up 10 verses. Worship is living a life marked by “Father, glorify Your name” (Jn 12:28) – in major things like fulfilling our God-given life mission (Jn 17:4), and in mundane things like eating and drinking (1 Cor 10:31). The Word of God is what we live by. Word and worship fundamentally have to do with knowing God. We must know God as He truly is from His Word, that we might worship Him truly.

What Saturates Your Life? (1) Scripture Ezra 7:12-26
Observation How many times does King Artaxerxes refer to God in his decree in verses 12 to 26, and what is the significance of that?

he decree of King Artaxerxes – a pagan king, authorising Ezra to attend to matters pertaining to the law of God and the house of God − is saturated with God. Of the 15 verses of the decree (vv.12-26), God is referred to in 13 verses. The divine name is mentioned 16 times in relation to various things. There is something subversive and provocative in this phenomenon. The decree is a secular writing that is so sacred, a political writing that is so theological, and a self-centred writing45 that is so God-centred. What saturates your life? Is it God or something else? To saturate is “to fill (something) completely with something that permeates or pervades”46. A life saturated with God is a God-intended ideal that we must pursue, but will never reach in this life. For Paul, “to live is Christ” (Phil 1:21), and his life purpose, passion and pursuit is to know and gain Christ (Phil 3:8), but knowing that he can never say “I have already attained it” (Phil 3:12). The realistic discipleship journey is marked by the daily challenge of the Spirit-andflesh conflict within us (Gal 5:16-17). In this journey, we can still truly say “To me, to live is Christ”, with Christ increasing, and I decreasing (Jn 3:30), more than yesterday, less than tomorrow.

What Saturates Your Life? (2) Scripture Ezra 7:12-26

he God-saturated decree of King Artaxerxes (vv.12-26) reflects in some specific ways what it means for God’s people to live a Godsaturated life. God is above us as “the God of heaven”. The divine title – mentioned four times (vv.12, 21, 23), underlines the sovereignty of God; for “it is Heaven that rules” (Dan 4:26). God is around us with His presence. “The house of God”, repeated six times (vv.16, 17, 19, 20, 23, 24), is God’s “dwelling in Jerusalem” (v.15). The God who condescends Himself to be with us is the God that “heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain” (1 Kin 8:27). We are in God in covenant relationship with Him as our covenant God, and we as His covenant people. “Your God” – repeated eight times (vv.14, 17-20, 25-26), is an expression of the covenant relationship: “I am your God, and you are My people” (Exo 6:7). Covenant relationship is both personal (“your God”) and corporate as “the God of Israel” (v.15), “the God of Jerusalem” (v.19) and “their God” (v.16). Central in covenant relationship is covenant faithfulness – keeping “the law of God” (vv.12, 14, 21, 25, 26). The God-saturated life begins with the divine initiative of grace towards us.

Observation What observations can you make about “Artaxerxes, king of kings” when you compare verse 12 with Daniel 2:37?

ing Artaxerxes began his decree by identifying himself as “king of kings” (v.12). Assyrian, Babylonian and Persian kings commonly used the title “king of kings” since their empires incorporated many kingdoms47. King Nebuchadnezzar was “the king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given the kingdom, the power, the strength and the glory” (Dan 2:37). Thus, the rabbis have rightly applied to God the title “King of the king of kings”48. Artaxerxes had decreed Ezra to act “according to the will of your God” (Ezr 7:18), and “whatever is commanded by the God of heaven” was to be done zealously “to the full” (Ezr 7:23, ESV). “Whatever” looks like a blank cheque from the Persian king, but in actuality, the “whatever” is subject to limitation49. However, there are two ways to look at the “whatever”: the historical “whatever” and the theological “whatever”. Theologically, Artaxerxes’ decree – “the king’s heart” – is “in the hand of the LORD” (Prov 21:1a). And “the God of heaven” will have it carried out according to His will and whatever He commanded, for He “turns it wherever He wishes” (Prov 21:1b).

Play a game with your family members called “guess the tool”. Each person takes turns to name a task and the others have to name the tool that is needed to do it. Whoever guesses correctly first wins. For example, if the task is to take a picture, the correct tool is a camera. (Note: It is possible to have a few correct answers).

Q1: How would you feel if you did not have the proper tools to help you complete a task, such as not having any sharpeners to sharpen your pencils? LEARNING POINT
1 Peter 4:10-11 tells us that God wants us to do good works to serve others, especially those in need. Doing that will reveal His love to the world. Some tasks are easy, such as sharing your stationery with those who don’t have any. Other tasks may take extra effort to achieve, like going on a mission trip to share the good news of Jesus. Whatever these tasks are, God has given us the strength, ability, help and resources to achieve them because He wants His kingdom’s work to be done on earth. If we lack certain abilities, we can ask Him to provide them because He gives freely. In the end, all praise will go to Jesus because all is done through Him.
ACTION POINT
List down one good thing you want to do for your neighbour or someone in need. Think about how you can achieve it and ask God to provide the necessary tools or abilities to do it. It could be money to buy stationery for your friend, or patience to help your friend in his schoolwork.

Looking Back: The Grace of God Scripture

Deeper Reflection
his is a significant week for Covenanters. It marks the week leading up to our 39th Anniversary as a congregation. As such, this week’s devotional thoughts focus on looking back over the years as God has formed us into a spiritual family, as well as looking forward to what may be for our future. We begin this day with God’s grace upon us. The Apostle Paul writes that it is purely by God’s grace that we are saved (vv.5c, 8). The idea of salvation is that of being made spiritually alive (vv.5a, 6) in contrast to being spiritually dead (vv.1, 5b). We are where we are today as Christians, as sons and daughters of the King, purely because of God’s wonderful grace. Likewise as a church, we recognise and acknowledge that we are where we are this day purely by the grace of God. This brings forth a deep sense of gratitude to our great God who did not treat us (“objects of wrath”, v.3b) as we deserved (vv.4-5). How gracious our God is! Thank you, Lord! Then we also notice that God pours out His grace upon certain people. James 4:6 tells us that God gives more grace! I don’t know about you, but I can certainly do with more of God’s grace in my life! And to whom does God give more grace? God gives more grace to the…humble. Even as we consider how gracious God has been to us as individuals and as a church, let us continue to humble ourselves before the Lord, so that He will continue to pour out more of His grace over our lives!

Observation What is the very nature of God, according to the Psalmist? When God does something, what is the description of the thing done?

hen the Bible tells us that “God is good,” it is not merely men ascribing to God a moral quality. Rather, goodness is the very nature of God Himself. God is morally perfect and He is the measure of everything. Dr J.I. Packer wrote in the New Bible Dictionary: “It is not that the biblical writers assess God in terms of a prior concept of goodness, but rather that, contemplating the supreme glory of God’s perfections, they apply to him the ordinary word for acknowledging worth. By so doing, however, they give that word a new depth of meaning. They define good in terms of God; not vice versa.” Wow! Ultimate reality, our God, is a good God! How wonderful can that be? And not just that, all He does, is therefore good! Covenant EFC started off in 1978 with 17 members as a church plant from Emmanuel Evangelical Church. Today, we average a worship attendance of about 5,500 with three worship centres. That surely is the good work of our good God! God also reminds us that His heart is not that the goodness He has blessed us with remains with us only. Rather, God blesses us with His goodness and blessings that others may through us also receive His blessings. In other words, we are to be channels of God’s blessings. The more we give as God gives, the more the world will know of this good, good God whom we call “Father”.

Looking Back: The Faithfulness of God Scripture

Observation What is your understanding of faithfulness? What do you think it means when the Bible says “God is faithful”?
Deeper Reflection
he idea of faithfulness is a relational word. We are faithful primarily to people rather than to things. It carries with it the idea of being steadfast, being true to our word given to another even under difficult circumstances (e.g. our marriage vows). Our God is a faithful God! He keeps His promises to His people. A particular promise was given to Covenant EFC when she was then called Emmanuel Christian Fellowship. At that time, we had about 40 to 60 people and held our very first 24-hour prayer chain from 6 pm on 8 August to 6 pm on 9 August (National Day). In the 2 to 4 am prayer slot, God laid a promise on one of the folks praying. It came from Isaiah 60:22: “The smallest one will become a clan, and the least one a mighty nation. I, the Lord, will hasten it in its time” (NAU). The Hebrew word for “clan” is “eleph” and means, literally, a thousand. Back then, we were the smallest church in the smallest denomination in Singapore. For us to have had 100 people in our service would have been a revival! And God was faithful. By the year 2000, we had grown to about 400 as a congregation. Some 300 of these folks moved with us to the west into our first centre at Bukit Panjang. On that day, 10 September 2000, our very first service witnessed an attendance of over 1,000 people! It was only after that first service that the awareness hit home that God had fulfilled His promise to us that day. We witnessed with our own eyes His Word coming to pass and we knelt and worshipped! Truly, God had kept His promise to us and fulfilled it in His time. That is who our God is! That is how we hope to live as His people – to be faithful to Him because His is faithful to us!

Looking Forward: Favour of God Scripture

Observation What does it mean to find favour in the sight of the Lord, and how do we obtain it?
Deeper Reflection
o favour someone is to esteem or delight in that person, often with a desire to connect or spend time with him or her. The favour of God is the tangible evidence of God’s approval of a person. God’s blessings upon Abraham is one, but not the key, indicator of God’s favour. “The LORD appeared” to Abraham many times and spoke directly with him throughout his life (see Gen 12-24; Gen 18 is one such occasion). God established His enduring covenant with Abraham (Gen 17). God was conspicuously present in Abraham’s life. The fact is that God made His presence the cornerstone of His covenant with Abraham and his descendants when He declared “to be God to you and to your descendants after you…I will be their God” (Gen 17:7-8, NAS). The favour of God is His resident presence in our lives. It can neither be earned nor obtained by us, it is given to us by God completely out of His divine initiative. The favour of God to us is possible only because of His grace (Eph 2:8-9). Who then does God give the favour of His presence? In truth, God is actively looking for “those whose heart is completely His” (2 Chron 16:9, NAS), those who “seek the LORD...call upon Him” (Isaiah 55:6, NAS), and those whose heart and spirit are humble, broken and contrite (Isa 66:1-2; 57:15; Psa 51:17). Although the favour of God cannot be earned, He may be sought and invited by people with brokenness of spirit, contriteness of heart, humility of soul and a surrendered life.

Application What do I really desire: the favours of God or God’s favour, and how must my heart and life be changed to receive it?
Prayer Dear Lord, thank You for Your grace of unmerited favour. Change my heart, O Lord, and make it ever true. Help me see how poor and broken I am and how undeserving I am of Your grace and love, and in so doing, create in me a broken spirit, a contrite heart and a humble soul that I may be a worthy vessel of Your presence in my life. Amen.
