MEN’S BASK ETBALL MEDIA GUIDE 2013-14
BARNES PE CENTER HOME OF THE SCOTS Barnes Physical Education Center was built in 1972 and named in honor of Covenant’s second president, Dr. Marion D. Barnes. The facility plays host to the Scots’ basketball and volleyball programs as well as other athletic departmenr needs. During the summer of 2013, Barnes PE Center received a facelift with new interior paint jobs and championship banners honoring all 13 of Covenant’s athletic programs. New bleachers were installed in October of 2013 to update the facility further. Seating capacity is set at 650. The main floor houses the game court to go along with offices for athletic administration. On the first floor are located an aerobic exercise room, weight room and more office space. The third floor has additional coaches and faculty offices and a classroom. Although a small venue, Barnes can become loud and raucous as spectators sit close to the action. In 2012-13, the Scots men’s basketball team used their home-court advantage to secure a 9-3 home record.

NCAA DIVISION III
MEMBERSHIPS
In 2013, Covenant became full members of the NCAA Division III following a four year transitional period from 2009-2013. The largest division, in terms of number of schools and number of participants, is Division III comprised by more than 170,000 student-athletes at 444 mostly smaller institutions. Academics are the primary focus for Division III student-athletes. The division minimizes the conflicts between athletics and academics and keeps student-athletes on a path to graduation through shorter practice and playing seasons, the number of contests, no redshirting and regional competition that reduces time away from academic studies. Student-athletes are integrated on campus and treated like all other members of the general student-body, keeping them focused on being a student first. The college experience is a time of learning and growth — a chance to follow passions and develop potential. For student-athletes in Division III, all of this happens most importantly in the classroom and through earning an academic degree. The Division III experience provides for passionate participation in a competitive athletic environment, in which student-athletes push themselves to excellence and build upon their academic success with new challenges and life skills. And student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their full passions and find their potential through a comprehensive educational experience. The Three D’s: Discover Division III student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their interests and passions beyond the classroom and field of play…to discover themselves. Develop Division III institutions provide an environment that encourages student-athletes to develop into well-rounded adults. Small class sizes, the ability to participate in more than one sport, and an emphasis on participating activities outside of the classroom are all hallmarks of the Division III experience. Dedicate Division III institutions expect student-athletes to dedicate themselves to achieving their potential. Studentathletes must manage their busy schedules, keep up with class work and face the same challenges as the rest of the student-body.

Kyle Taylor HEAD COACH
Head Coach
Kyle Taylor will enter his fifth year at the helm of the men’s basketball program in 2013-14. Taylor is also in his first full year of serving as the school’s Director of Athletics. During his first four years, Taylor has increased the win total each year and is steadily building Covenant into a quality basketball program on the court. In 2012-13, the Scots registered their first winning season in 14 years (1998-99) with a 13-11 overall mark. Taylor is encouraged by the improvements he has seen in the program each year. He is insistent about changing the culture of the program and focused on developing his guys into godly men on and off the court. Meekness, Servanthood, Accountability, Discipline, and Passion are the core values Taylor has implemented for the men’s basketball program over the past four years. He feels blessed by the opportunities he has had to communicate with some great recruits and enjoyed the opportunity to coach many of them. On the court, Taylor is committed to working toward developing a team that is a successful regional power each year. He is passionate about coaching a team that is exciting to watch, competitive, disciplined, up tempo offensively, and great in transition play. The men’s basketball program is committed first to developing players that represent Christ on and off the court. As young men who will graduate and go into all kinds of disciplines, the coaching staff believes it is important that players learn to represent Christ, Covenant College, their academics, and their families with class. The basketball program at Covenant is therefore both a place to understand how to play competitive basketball for the glory of God and also develop into godly men who will continue to be used for Kingdom work upon graduating. An important part of the basketball program during Taylor’s time at Covenant has been the opportunity to travel on missions trips in order to use basketball as a tool for sharing the Gospel with others. In May 2011, Taylor took his team to Greece, and in August 2012, several of his players traveled to Newark, New Jersey to conduct basketball clinics and share the Gospel. The team also took a missions trip to Costa Rica in December 2012. Taylor is a native of Salinas, Calif. He graduated from UCLA in 2005 with a double major in Business/Economics and Political Science. He received his M.S. in Health and Physical Education from Northwest Missouri State in 2008.

2013-14 SEASON PREVIEW
Under fifth year head coach Kyle Taylor, the 2013-14 edition of the Covenant men’s basketball team begins the season on Friday night at Berry in the Berry College Classic in Rome, Ga.
On the heels of the first winning season in the program since 1999, the Scots have to fill the shoes of six departing seniors and seven total letterwinners lost. Together, those seven players accounted for 72 percent of the scoring from last year’s successful campaign. Leading the charge this season is junior Colton McGriff. The 6-foot-6 forward from Birmingham, Ala., was the team’s leading scorer a season ago at 11.3 points per game. McGriff was named to the NCCAA Mid-East All-Region team as he scored in double figures 17 times with a season-high 21 coming against Grace Bible in early December. McGriff should have help from teammates Nate Frierson and Chris Boyd. Frierson is the lone returning point guard with significant collegiate experience on this year’s squad. The junior from Laurel, Md., came on late in the 2012-13 season as he scored a career-high 15 points in Covenant’s 69-60 win at Huntingdon that clinched a winning season. “Nate has always been a good player, but will need to shoulder more of the burden of this role as distributor and quarterback,” said Taylor. “He is also one of our best two defenders, so needs to be great guarding on ball. We’ll also ask Nate to score more this year.” Boyd, a sophomore from Detroit, Mich., provides a solid interior presence for the Scots. The 6-foot-6 forward played in all 24 games as a freshman and averaged four points and three rebounds per contest. “With a thin front line, he will need to be consistent and make an impact every night,” noted Taylor. “Chris has improved significantly this year, so I’m looking forward to his impact.” Covenant returns nine letterwinners from a season ago, but just two starters in McGriff and Frierson. Taylor and assistant coach Brian Millar gathered in a strong recruiting class with players looking to make an immediate impact. Highlighting the incoming freshmen class is Coral Springs, Fla., product Robby Bell. Bell, who stands at 6-foot-3, had an outstanding high school career as he went 71-20 in three seasons as a varsity starter and holds the school record for free throw percentage and is second in 3-pointers made. In addition to Bell, Taylor also sees potential from Z Arima (Herriman, Utah), Ben Phelps (Asheville, N.C.) and Will Portlock (Winter Haven, Fla.). According to Taylor, Arima should be the backup point guard and is a solid defender and outside shooter. Phelps can also shoot the 3 with accuracy, and Portlock is a bigger guard (6-foot-3) who can score, rebound and defend.

WE ARE THE
SCOTS 2013-14 SEASON PREVIEW
Covenant was picked to finish seventh in the USA South preseason coaches’ poll in the 11-team conference. Even with that initial ranking, Taylor is optimistic about his team and where they stand within the league. “I think the conference is wide open. The top seven teams are all good (nobody is great), and all those games are winnable for us,” remarked Taylor. “It’ll be a really fun year because every night will be a dogfight between two good teams. There are not many cupcakes on the schedule in conference play, but also not many games that you look at and say ‘how can we win?’” Taylor’s goals for his team this season include winning 17 games, breaking into the top four of the league standings and winning a conference tournament game. Covenant has not had consecutive winning seasons since late in the 1980s when Gene Fitzgerald was the head coach and put together four straight winning years, the most in program history. Taylor continued, “I’m really excited about this season and this group. We need to continue to improve on last year’s winning season. Stay humble, stay hungry.” Covenant’s first home game is schedule for Wednesday, November 20 against Sewanee at 7:30 p.m.

For the first time since 1998-99, the Covenant
2012-13 SEASON IN REVIEW
men’s basketball program experienced a winning season. The 2012-13 edition of the Scots gave fans a thrill as the men finished 13-11 overall which included a 9-3 home record. The season got out to a rough start as the Scots lost three of their first four contests, with a win over Emory & Henry in the home opener the lone victory. But Covenant turned it on in December through the middle of January. Consecutive victories over Oglethorpe and Sewanee brought the men to 3-3 as they headed to Michigan for two games. Playing in front of a large contingent of Scots fans in Holland, Mich., home of Hope College, Covenant fell to perennial power Hope before besting Grace Bible (Mich.) in the second game. The team then took a week-long missions trip to Costa Rica. Partnering with the women’s team, players and coaches worked with several local churches, an orphanage, and a widow’s ministry during their stay. The men’s team also had the chance to get in a couple of games as they went 1-1 on the trip. Upon returning to campus, the Scots won their first five games to run their win-streak to six and move to 10-5 on the year. Covenant finished the season with two victories over Huntingdon as they claimed the program’s first winning season in 15 years. Covenant received a four seed in the NCCAA MidEast Region Tournament, but fell in the opening round to close out the season. “We had a great year this year and accomplished our primary goal (a winning record),” said head coach Kyle Taylor, who finished his fourth year at the helm. “I am really proud of how mentally and physically tough we were this year. That was the biggest difference between this year’s team and my previous teams at Covenant, and it made all the difference in the world.” The backbone of the team was its senior class. Six seniors -- Rosbie Mutcherson, Callum Sears, Damien Chaney, Jon DeVries, Sam Bowman, Joey
32
Danek, plus assistant coach Peter Wilkerson -played their final games. The group experienced the ups and downs of the program, but the team improved in the win column each of the four years. “I am going to miss our seven seniors (including Wilkerson),” continued Taylor. “They made an incredible mark on this program that will never be forgotten. They labored tirelessly, and persevered through some tough times to lay a solid foundation for future Covenant men’s basketball players to build upon.” Sears posted his 1,000th career point with a 22-point effort in a win over Hiwassee. Sears finishes his Covenant career with 1,061 points in 99 games. DeVries had the team’s individual gamehigh for points with 27 in a victory over Crown, and Bowman grabbed a game-high 18 rebounds in the NCCAA region loss. Covenant prided itself on defense the whole season. The Scots held their opponents to 60 points or fewer 11 times this season and nine of their 13 wins came by fewer than 10 points. Covenant allowed its opponents just 61.3 points per game and 41.6 percent shooting from the field. “Our defense was stout this year and great to see us getting stops when we needed to,” noted Taylor. “Our players believed we were going to win late in games and knew it needed to happen on the defensive end and with rebounding. We were 7-4 in games decided by 6 points or less.” Sophomore Colton McGriff led the Scots in scoring at 11.3 points per game, while Bowman was the team’s leading rebounder with 6.3 per contest. McGriff was named 2nd Team NCCAA Mid-East AllRegion and 2nd Team GABCA All-State. Bowman was also a GABCA 2nd Team All-State honoree. Other postseason awards went to DeVries (NCCAA Mid-East Region Honorable Mention). For his work in the classroom, DeVries was also an NCCAA Scholar-Athlete along with sophomore guard Nate Frierson.
