SCOTLAND YARD HOME OF THE SCOTS Built in 1989, Scotland Yard is home to both the men’s and women’s soccer programs at Covenant. The field, located in the southern part of the campus, just past Ashe Activity Center, is of regulation dimensions (118 yards by 70 yards). Scotland Yard boasts cement bleachers, along with two newer sets of metal stands, and a retaining wall which provides fan seating along with a new entrance and awnings. Across from the north-side bleachers, are the team and press areas on the south side of the field. Both teams sit in covered dugouts. During the summer of 2008, the field was completely overhauled by installing a drainage system and sprinkler system. Also a crowning of the field was performed and a sand base was put in place for better drainage. Lights were installed for the first time before the 2010 season. The inaugural match held at Scotland Yard pitted Covenant against Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI) on September 2, 1989. Behind a goal from Jimmy Weekley, assisted by Brian Peeples, in the early minutes of the tilt the Scots came out with a 1-0 victory over the Metros. Covenant would finish the opening season at Scotland Yard with a 7-1-1 home record. In 2012, Covenant men’s soccer ranked 15th in all of NCAA Division III in attendance averaging 437 fans per match, including a season-high 1300 for the Homecoming contest.

NCAA DIVISION III
MEMBERSHIPS
In 2013, Covenant became full members of the NCAA Division III following a four year transitional period from 2009-2013. The largest division, in terms of number of schools and number of participants, is Division III comprised by more than 170,000 student-athletes at 444 mostly smaller institutions. Academics are the primary focus for Division III student-athletes. The division minimizes the conflicts between athletics and academics and keeps student-athletes on a path to graduation through shorter practice and playing seasons, the number of contests, no redshirting and regional competition that reduces time away from academic studies. Student-athletes are integrated on campus and treated like all other members of the general student-body, keeping them focused on being a student first. The college experience is a time of learning and growth — a chance to follow passions and develop potential. For student-athletes in Division III, all of this happens most importantly in the classroom and through earning an academic degree. The Division III experience provides for passionate participation in a competitive athletic environment, in which student-athletes push themselves to excellence and build upon their academic success with new challenges and life skills. And student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their full passions and find their potential through a comprehensive educational experience. The Three D’s: Discover Division III student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their interests and passions beyond the classroom and field of play…to discover themselves. Develop Division III institutions provide an environment that encourages student-athletes to develop into well-rounded adults. Small class sizes, the ability to participate in more than one sport, and an emphasis on participating activities outside of the classroom are all hallmarks of the Division III experience. Dedicate Division III institutions expect student-athletes to dedicate themselves to achieving their potential. Studentathletes must manage their busy schedules, keep up with class work and face the same challenges as the rest of the student-body.

In 2013, Covenant became members of the USA South Athletic Conference. The conference is comprised of schools from Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia. All told, the USA South has 13 full-fledged members along with two associate members (one in women’s lacrosse and one in football). In volleyball and women’s basketball, the conference is split into two divisions (North and South). Covenant plays in the South division in those sports with Huntingdon, LaGrange, Maryville and Piedmont. In all sports, with the exception of cross country, the top eight teams in the conference regular season standings advance to participate in the conference tournament. Nathan Pifer HEAD COACH
Head Coach
Nathan Pifer will enter into his fifth season at the helm of Covenant’s men’s soccer program in 2013. He is the fifth coach in the history of Covenant men’s soccer (John Miglarese, Dr. Brian Crossman, Dave Fortosis, Walter Bowman). Throughout his coaching career, Pifer has earned championship success as a head coach at both the intercollegiate and interscholastic levels. After graduating from Covenant in 1984, Pifer had successful coaching stints at Montreat-Anderson and King, before taking the head men’s job at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas. At Midwestern State, Pifer took his teams to the NAIA national tournament in his first seven seasons, and finished as the National Runner-Up in 1991 and 1995. He was nominated for NAIA National Coach of the Year in 1987, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, and 1996. MSU then moved to NCAA Division II status, and his team didn’t miss a beat, breaking into the Division II Top 25 in its inaugural campaign and in the following 1998 season with a ranking as high as #15 in the nation. In 1999, MSU finished 14-5-2 and won the Lone Star Conference championship. In his ten years as the men’s coach at MSU, Pifer was 163-61-13. In 1996 MSU asked Pifer to take over the helm of the women’s soccer program in addition to his work with the men’s team, and he built the women’s team into a program that won the Lone Star Conference for two consecutive seasons. His success in the women’s game then led him to take over as the head women’s soccer coach at the University of Tennessee at Martin in 2000. The Skyhawks had been 3-34 in their first two years of existence, but Pifer vastly improved the program and led the team to consecutive 9-7-2 seasons in 2002 and 2003. After six seasons at UT-Martin, Pifer moved to Christian Academy of Knoxville, where he served as the school’s Assistant Principal and girls’ soccer coach. In his three seasons as CAK’s head coach, Pifer and the Warriors won state championships in 2006 and 2008, and just missed-out on a third title in 2007 when the team lost a heartbreaking four-overtime game to Chattanooga Christian School in penalty kicks. After three seasons he had rung up a very impressive 64-6-3 record and was named the Prep-Xtra Coach of the Year in 2006 and 2008. During his time at Covenant, Pifer has amassed a 45-35-5 record over four seasons. His first season, the Scots went 13-6-2 and placed third at the NCCAA national tournament. The following year (2010), Covenant was 14-9 overall and again made a trip to the NCCAA national tournament this

At Covenant, he has coached three NCCAA All-Americans (Julian Allgeier, twice, and Chris Pifer) while having five players on honorable mention. In addition, Pifer has had 18 NCCAA ScholarAthletes during his tenure. Pifer earned a Master of Art in Education from Western Carolina University in 1989, and an Education Specialist degree in Instructional Leadership from Tennessee Tech University in 2008. He and his wife, Angie, have been married for 28 years and have two sons, David, who played for the Scots’ soccer team from 2007-10, and Chris, who played for the Scots from 2009-12.

ASSISTANT COACHES
DREW COURTNEY
Full-time Assistant & Head JV Coach 2013 will mark Drew Courtney’s third season with the Covenant men’s soccer program. Courtney serves as head coach Nathan Pifer’s top assistant and JV head coach. A Chattanooga, Tenn., native, Courtney graduated from local Chattanooga Christian School where he played four years of varsity soccer. Courtney then continued his playing career at NCAA Division II Lander University in Greenwood, S.C., where he was a four-year starter in the midfield. During his time with the Bearcats, the Lander squad earned three consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament, including appearances in the elite eight and sweet sixteen. After finishing at Lander, Courtney moved west to join the Southern California Seahorses of the Premier Development League (PDL). Courtney played one season there and moved back east for stints with the Mississippi Brilla of the PDL and the Chattanooga Football Club of the National Premier Soccer League. He continued to compete with CFC through the summer of 2011. Prior to Covenant, Courtney served as the Graduate Assistant for Belhaven University (Jackson, Mississippi), beginning in 2009. The Blazers went 26-6-5 during Courtney’s two seasons there and earned a trip to the NAIA national tournament in 2010. Courtney was the head coach for Mississippi Brilla in the summer of 2012. He has also coached several club teams, including two years with the Mississippi Brilla Jrs. Courtney was named Club Coach of the Year in 2010. He is the son of two Covenant graduates: Lea and Susie Courtney. His father played soccer during his time as a student in the ‘70s, while Susie played basketball and was a member of the cheerleading squad shortly thereafter. The Courtney family currently resides on Lookout Mountain. Courtney received a bachelor’s degree from Lander (2008) and a master’s degree from Belhaven (2011), both in Business Administration. Drew and his wife, Cassie, also reside on Lookout Mountain.

As the summer months begin to wind down toward fall, so begins another season of Covenant men’s soccer.
2013 SEASON PREVIEW
The program, under fifth year head coach Nathan Pifer, looks to have one of its best seasons since Pifer’s arrival.
There is also change in the program as Covenant heads into its first season as members of the USA South Athletic Conference and full-fledged active members of NCAA Division III. After four years of being ineligible for conference championships and NCAA postseason opportunities, Covenant is hoping to take full advantage of its new status. Even with the new excitement and opportunities around the program, a summer tragedy lingers in the hearts of all Scots both inside and outside the men’s soccer program. In July, rising junior David Taaffe passed away after suffering injuries in a fall during a hiking trip in Switzerland. Taaffe was 20 years old. He was a consistent starter as a midfielder in his first two seasons. The team plans to dedicate the season in memory of Taaffe. The team’s first home match of the year on September 3 against Sewanee will be tabbed as “David Taaffe Night” as the team honors its teammate and brother. “I am excited for the team as we dedicate this season to the memory of our brother and teammate David Taaffe and compete for a championship,” said Pifer. Competing for a championship is top priority for the Scots. The USA South coaches picked Covenant to finish fifth in the 10-team league this season. The talent on the roster certainly warrants such a high ranking. Seniors Matt Hudnut, Garrison Dale and Shuler Polk return to lead the team along with 17 returners overall, including five starters. Hudnut, a St. Louis, Mo., native, is the team’s leading returning goal scorer as he tallied eight last season. The midfielder is known not only by his full beard and long hair, but also his flair for the dramatic as he has notched seven game-winning goals over the last two seasons, including four in overtime periods. Hudnut has 14 goals in his career and was named NCCAA Player of the Week once last season. After scoring a career-high six goals last season, Dale is the second leading scorer returning in 2013. The senior from Statesville, N.C., scored two of his goals in Covenant’s 2-0 victory at Maryville last season. Polk, a Greenville, S.C. native, made the most of his first season of holding the starting job as keeper. The senior, who recently got married, made 98 saves and had four shutouts as a junior and was named to the the NCCAA Mid-East all-region squad. Also returning is a solid back line with juniors Roy Anderson, Hunter Harrison and Hudson Brock. Anderson started 17 matches last year and had two assists to go along with his defensive work. Harrison was an NCCAA Mid-East all-region selection in 2012 as his rugged play secured the back line and he also added a pair of goals. Brock was named NCCAA Player of the Week in late October last season after netting a game-winning score at Huntingdon. Together, the three players saw action in all but five matches in 2012. The Scots also hope to get a boost from redshirt sophomore Gordon Carpenter. Carpenter sat out all of last season with an injury but the fleet-footed 5-foot-7 midfielder is healthy again and ready to see the field.

Pifer has also added several newcomers that could see immediate action and play a major role on the team. Two NCAA Division I transfers in Snoopy Davidson (South Carolina) and Alex Lupinek (Lipscomb) along with NCAA Division III transfer Michael Arango (Gettysburg) highlight the recruiting class. “All three guys should have an impact immediately,” said Pifer of his transfers. “Davidson and Arango should boost the scoring end of things for us.” Davidson, younger brother of former Covenant player Hunt Davidson, recorded four goals and two assists in two seasons as a Gamecock while playing in nearly every match in both years. Lupinek and Arango each spent one season at their previous school before deciding to transfer. Pifer also noted that a more traditional newcomer in freshman Jonathan Blackmon heads up a “strong freshmen recruiting class.” Blackmon comes to Covenant from Briarwood Christian in Birmingham, Ala., where he helped lead his team to a state championship and was nominated for Gatorade Player of the Year as a junior. Other freshmen include Matt Schroeder (High Point, N.C.), Parker Vaughan (Dayton, Ohio) and Caleb Allen (Matthews, N.C.). In order to make a championship run this season, the Scots will have to make their way through a difficult conference and non-conference schedule. Non-conference tilts include Birmingham Southern, Emory, Hanover and Transylvania, among others. Inside the USA South slate, Covenant will host the preseason favorite Methodist and preseason runner-up North Carolina Wesleyan over Homecoming weekend on October 11-12. Added Pifer, “Our history with these teams has been good and we feel that we will be competitve enough to have a chance at winning a conference championship. We know there are no easy games and we will prepare for that challenge.” There is a lot to look forward to from the Scots in 2013 as the program moves into a new chapter in its history.

On September 3, 2013 the Covenant Scots men’s soccer team will remember their teammate and brother, David Taaffe, before that night’s match against Sewanee. David was an example of a player that glorified God in his actions on and off the field. He respected his opponents, loved his teammates and lived for Jesus. His leadership, love and dedication will live in our hearts forever. Thank you, David. We miss you and will always remember you and are confident we will see you again.

The men’s soccer team finished the 2012 season
2012 SEASON IN REVIEW
with a 10-10-1 record and reached the NCCAA Mid-East Region Championship match. The Scots got off to a rough start, losing five of their first six matches, but then won six of seven to climb back over the .500 mark. Covenant’s attack was centered around junior Matt Hudnut, senior Tyler Morrison, and junior Garrison Dale who combined to score 21 of Covenant’s 35 goals this season. Hudnut had a flair for the dramatic as he had a pair of “golden goals” on backto-back nights in September to kickstart the Scots’ winning streak. Morrison had a hat trick in a 4-3 overtime loss at Emory, while Dale scored two goals in a 2-0 win over Maryville.
over Spalding. The Scots would win six of seven matches from September 19-October 6. The men earned the third-seed in the NCCAA Mid-East Region tournament. The Scots routed Campbellsville 4-1 in the semifinal round, but fell 1-0 to Union (Tenn.) in the region championship match. The loss marked the second consecutive season that Covenant finished runner-up in the region. Before the season even began, the team had the opportunity to go on a Missions trip to the Cayman Islands. The Scots played several games against local competition and also shared the Gospel with local youth players and other residents.
Hudnut was named NCCAA Player of the week on September 24 after he recorded those two gamewinning goals in overtime. Sophomore Hudson Brock was also tabbed as an NCCAA Player of the Week on October 31. Covenant had four players on the NCCAA MidEast All-Region team led by senior Chris Pifer, sophomore Hunter Harrison, senior goalkeeper Shuler Polk, and Hudnut. Polk allowed 25 goals on the year for a 1.38 goals against average. Pifer produced two scores, both coming on penalty kicks, while Harrison also found the net twice from his defender position. Pifer was also voted as a second team NCCAA AllAmerican earlier this week. Pifer is the first Scots player to receive All-American status since 2010. One of the key highlights as a team was a 2-0 road win over Maryville College on October 2. The win meant Covenant brought back the Highland Cup, a trophy awarded to the winner of the matchup between the two schools who share the “Scots” nickname, for the first time since its inception a few years ago. Covenant got off to a rocky start as they were defeated by No. 3-ranked Messiah to begin the season and would lose two more before earning its first win

Once a booster.....Always a booster. It is important to remember that once an individual has been identified as a booster, he or she retains that status forever. If you have questions whether you are considered a booster of Covenant Athletics or if you have questions about what you may or may not do as a booster, please feel free to contact the Compliance Office at tim. sceggel@covenant.edu. What is an extra benefit? Fans and boosters may not provide anything to prospects or currently enrolled student-athletes (or their families) without prior approval from the Compliance Office. If a student-athlete and/or his or her family accepts any benefits of special consideration (e.g., transportation, clothing, money, meals, etc.) based on his or her athletic skill, the student-athlete will lose his or her eligibility and Covenant will be subject to NCAA penalties.
