NCAA DIVISION III

MEMBERSHIPS

In 2013, Covenant became full members of the NCAA Division III following a four year transitional period from 2009-2013. The largest division, in terms of number of schools and number of participants, is Division III comprised by more than 170,000 student-athletes at 444 mostly smaller institutions. Academics are the primary focus for Division III student-athletes. The division minimizes the conflicts between athletics and academics and keeps student-athletes on a path to graduation through shorter practice and playing seasons, the number of contests, no redshirting and regional competition that reduces time away from academic studies. Student-athletes are integrated on campus and treated like all other members of the general student-body, keeping them focused on being a student first. The college experience is a time of learning and growth — a chance to follow passions and develop potential. For student-athletes in Division III, all of this happens most importantly in the classroom and through earning an academic degree. The Division III experience provides for passionate participation in a competitive athletic environment, in which student-athletes push themselves to excellence and build upon their academic success with new challenges and life skills. And student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their full passions and find their potential through a comprehensive educational experience. The Three D’s: Discover Division III student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their interests and passions beyond the classroom and field of play…to discover themselves. Develop Division III institutions provide an environment that encourages student-athletes to develop into well-rounded adults. Small class sizes, the ability to participate in more than one sport, and an emphasis on participating activities outside of the classroom are all hallmarks of the Division III experience. Dedicate Division III institutions expect student-athletes to dedicate themselves to achieving their potential. Student-athletes must manage their busy schedules, keep up with class work and face the same challenges as the rest of the student-body.

HOME OF THE SCOTS Finished in 2009, the Covenant Baseball Field is one of the most beautiful baseball facilities in the southeast. The ballpark is located on the south end of campus and just a few steps away from the softball field. The park features spacious dugouts, oversized bullpens, and roomy dimensions (LF/RF - 325’, CF - 400’). In the summer of 2010, permanent bleachers were added behind home plate. The playing surface is one of the best kept in the region, thanks to the hard work by the entire Covenant baseball program. Opposing players, coaches, and umpires rave about the quality of the well-maintained infield dirt and grass. The facility played host to the NCCAA Mid-East Regional tournament in 2010 and has also hosted numerous local high school games. The Scots have a 79-47 record at the field in the six seasons of the ballpark’s existence. Covenant went 17-3 at home in 2014. The first Covenant player to hit a home run at the field was Taylor Oldham on March 7, 2009 against Union (Ky.) College. In 2014, the indoor hitting facility (right) was completed inside the Highlands Fieldhouse. The facility has two hitting areas and is used by both baseball and softball programs.

Doug Simons HEAD COACH

Head Coach

Doug Simons will enter into his ninth year as head baseball coach at Covenant in the 2015 season. Simons is now the second longest tenured head coach at Covenant (Mark Duble, women’s soccer, 21 years). Simons came on staff in 2005 to restart the intercollegiate baseball program which had been dormant since the 1980s. “We are a Christ-centered program,” Simons said about his program. “We want to give the young men in our program the opportunity to grow in Christ, get a great education and develop into players who could play at the next level.” Simons came to Covenant after spending 18 years in professional baseball. He’s played in the major leagues with the New York Mets (1991) and the Montreal Expos (1992). Most of his professional career was spent in the minor leagues where he accumulated 72 wins, 20 complete games, and made three all-star teams (1989 California League, 1990 Southern League, and 1995 Texas League). Simons played in the minor league organizations of the Minnesota Twins, Montreal Expos, Kansas City Royals, and Houston Astros. He also played professionally overseas in Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Italy. After his playing days ended in 1997, Simons spent four years as a pitching coach in the New York Mets organization and then four years as a full-time area scout with the Texas Rangers. In 2014, Simons led his program to its first-ever conference title and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Scots claimed the USA South regular season title on the final day of the season and earned the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament where they were seeded sixth in the South Regional. Eight players from that team were selected to an All-USA South team, including five first team selections. In his eight years, Simons has had three NCCAA region player of the year award winners and six NCCAA AllAmericans. Off the field, Simons has had 46 conference all-academic performers, including 10 in the USA South for the 2013-14 academic year. Three of his teams have earned conference Sportsmanship Awards, including the USA South’s in 2014. The baseball program had its first varsity season since the 1980s in 2007. The Scots produced just six wins in each of the first two years and 15 wins the third year. Since 2010, Covenant has finished at or above .500 each season with a modern era record 28 wins in 2013. The 2013 team was selected to its first NCCAA World Series appearance. Simons is a 1988 graduate of Pepperdine University, in his native California. During his three years at Pepperdine, Simons accumulated 28 wins, 18 complete games, five shutouts and, at one point, pitched 30.2 consecutive

SCOTS ASSISTANT COACHES

Scott Whitted Assistant Coach

Scott Whitted is in his second season as an assistant for head coach Doug Simons. Whitted is originally from Pennsylvania where he played baseball at Temple University in Philadelphia. At Temple, Whitted played under NCAA Hall of Fame coach James “Skip” Wilson. The Owls were a top 20 program and had made an appearance in the College World Series. After his sophomore year at Temple, Whitted transferred to Covenant. At Covenant, he was a dual athlete in soccer and baseball earning MVP awards in both sports. While at Covenant, he was scouted by the Kansas City Royals and awarded NCCAA All-District awards his junior and senior years. After graduating from Covenant, he then turned his passion for baseball into a passion for coaching. He has coached in various arenas from private and public high schools to coaching his son’s in Little League and travel ball teams. As a high school coach, he won a state championship and had numerous appearances in the state playoffs. Most recently, Whitted spent three years as the Head Assistant and Pitching Coach at Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, Ga., from 2011-13. Emmanuel made appearances at the 2012 and 2013 NCCAA Division I World Series, finishing 3rd in the nation in 2012. During those two seasons, Emmanuel pitching staffs set consecutive season records for the lowest team ERA. Whitted welcomes the opportunity to coach at his alma mater and be a part of the ministry at Covenant. He is married to Lisa (Bryan) Whitted (Covenant ‘84) and the couple has four children, Caitlyn, Kelsey (Covenant ‘13), Chapman (Covenant freshman) and Jackson.

2015 SEASON PREVIEW

Scots look for USA South title repeat in 2015 LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- After a run to the regular season championship a season ago, the Covenant baseball team will begin its quest for a second straight NCAA tournament berth when they open the 2015 season on Friday against non-conference foe Emory & Henry. The Scots, under ninth-year head coach Doug Simons, return six All-USA South performers from last season and were picked to finish second in the conference’s preseason poll released two weeks ago. Covenant went 26-15 last year, 19-8 in the USA South, and earned the conference’s automatic berth to the NCAA tournament for the first time in program history. It marked the second straight season the Scots made an appearance in a national tournament. Gone are the likes of David Lockwood, Chris Rollins and Paul Phillips, but Simons believes his team has the talent available to make another run for a regular season USA South crown and an NCAA tournament berth. “We are in a position to have as much talent on our team as any other team in the USA South,” Simons said. “I don’t believe we will be outmatched, talent-wise, in any game this season.” Offensively, the Scots should have one of the best lineups in the conference. Senior Scott Gillespie is the team’s leading returning hitter after he batted .361 with 16 doubles in 2014 en route to being named to the USA South All-Conference second team. Senior second baseman Will Cleland hit .331 with 19 extra-base hits and earned postseason honors from the USA South, ABCA and D3baseball.com. Senior Will Carlton and junior Perry Rigby look to be Covenant’s top power hitters. Carlton had four home runs last season to lead the team, while Rigby belted three. Senior KC Simons is coming off a career year offensively with a .317 average to go along with a team-best 30

SCOTS walks. Sophomore Alex Kerr figures to get increased playing time this season after he batted .394 in 15 games as a freshman.

2015 SEASON PREVIEW

“Every one of our starters has the potential of becoming all-conference,” added head coach Simons. “We have three catchers who can all start for us, along with some freshmen who have the potential. Gillespie is our best hitter. Cleland and Rigby are also very good and I’m interested to see how Kerr plays with more playing time.” Defensively, the Scots are strong. Simons and Cleland will be in their fourth year of the double-play tandem up the middle infield, while the outfield boasts players with both speed and strong arms. “Our whole infield is the best defensive infield out there, while also filled with guys who had a lot of offensive success,” remarked Simons. “I wouldn’t trade them for anyone. I feel our outfield will be stronger this year, both offensively and defensively, as long as we stay healthy.” On the mound, Covenant returns two top starters. Junior Garrett Kriston was masterful at times last season compiling a 7-3 record with a 3.57 ERA, while throwing a program-record 75.2 innings, and was an All-USA South first team selection. Kriston began the year with 17.1 scoreless innings and had four starts with at least 10 strikeouts. Senior Micah Mabe will look to return to his all-american form from 2013 after a tough season in 2014. Mabe went 4-2 with an ERA of 4.31 in 56.1 innings of work. “I believe we have two number one starters,” Simons said of his top two returning pitchers. “I’d match them up against any two starters we play against.” The third spot in the rotation is up for grabs as the season draws closer. Sophomore Jordan Lester along with junior Jonah Paul and newcomers could compete for the last start of a weekend conference series. The recruiting class brought in by Simons will add depth to the team. Junior transfer Ryan Reilly (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) could be a big boost for the Scots with his ability to roam center field and provide another quality bat in the lineup. Freshman catcher Joel Johnson (Montgomery, Ala.) adds depth behind the plate while freshman Caleb Bloye (Dallas, Ga.), cousin of sophomore Taylor Bloye, has talent on the mound and as a hitter. Several other freshmen could also see significant playing time. With high expectations, Simons has his team taking the same approach they have every other year. “Obviously, we would like to win every game we play. We can’t control winning, but we can control the process of how we play. We try to win each pitch, each series of pitches which then turns into plays and series of plays.” After a three-game weekend series with Emory & Henry, Covenant opens up its defense of the USA South with a three-game series vs. Methodist on Feb. 13-14 at home.

2014 SEASON IN REVIEW

Scots capture USA South in memorable 2014 LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- For the second consecutive year, the Covenant baseball team played in a national tournament. A year after appearing in the NCCAA World Series, the Scots took another milestone step forward in the program’s history by winning the USA South and participating in the school’s first NCAA tournament. In head coach Doug Simons’ eighth season, the Scots continued their recent trend of success. By finishing 26-15 overall, it marked the fifth consecutive 20-win year and .500 or better season. The Scots won a program-record 26 regular season contests and set a new mark with 19 conference wins. Entering the year, Covenant was picked to win the USA South in the preseason coaches’ poll. After getting off to a 3-3 start in league play, the Scots won 11 of the next 12 conference games to gain a lead in the standings. Consecutive series losses to Methodist and Maryville left Covenant three wins back of first place heading into the final series against Averett. Needing a sweep over Averett to win the conference, the Scots took care of business on their home field. Covenant run-ruled the Cougars 14-2 in the series opener and followed that with wins of 14-7 and 5-2 to earn the program’s first conference title and an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament. Covenant received the six-seed in the NCAA South Regional in Demorest, Georgia and opened up postseason play with an 11-3 loss against top-seed and nationally-ranked Shenandoah. Facing Rhodes in an elimination game, the Scots fell just short of keeping their season alive in a 5-3 loss. Eight players were named to All-USA South teams, the most in program history, following impressive seasons. Will Cleland, Perry Rigby, David Lockwood, Will Carlton and Garrett Kriston were all first team selections. Scott Gillespie and Chris Rollins earned second team honors, while KC Simons was a third team choice. Paul Phillips was Covenant’s representative on the All-Sportsmanship team. Cleland was also honored with all-region honors from the ABCA and D3baseball.com. Covenant also had eight players earn weekly USA South honors, headlined by Kriston being a three-time Pitcher of the Week. Jordan Lester, Carlton, Cleland, Rigby and Z Arima were recognized during the year. As a team, the Scots led the USA South in hitting with a .320 average. Seven regular starters hit above .300 and the catcher position, split between Arima, Forrest Hunter and Alex Kerr, accumulated a combined .349 average. Carlton, the only regular to hit below .300, led the team with four homers. Lockwood put an end to an outstanding career with a .316 average, 44 RBIs and 21 doubles. The 44 RBIs ties a program mark and the 21 doubles tied his own school record set back in 2012. Lockwood leaves Covenant with several program career records including hits (220), doubles (66), RBIs (141) and total bases (334). The team set several new program records during the year as well. The Scots defeated Greensboro 29-4 on March 22 to set a new program mark for runs scored and hits with 27. Coming into the season, no Covenant team had tallied 20 hits in a game but the Scots did it three times against Greensboro (27), Maryville (23) and Berry (22). Covenant set a school record and tied the USA South mark for most steals in a game with 16 coming against Bates on Feb. 18. The team also tied its record for most innings played in a 16-15, 13-inning loss to Berry on March 18.

2014 - NCAA Tournament

The 2013 team became the first in program history to reach the NCCAA World Series. It appeared as if the season was over for the Scots after finishing third in the NCCAA Mid-East Regional, but the Scots were selected as an at-large and seeded 10th at the NCCAA World Series in Mason, Ohio. Covenant went 0-4 in pool play at the World Series.

After claiming the USA South regular season championship, the Scots earned the conference’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. It marked the first time in Covenant athletics history that a team had qualified for an NCAA championship tournament. Led by eight all-USA South performers, Covenant was placed in the South Regional as the No. 6 seed. The Scots went 0-2 in the regional which was hosted by Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia.

WE ARE THE

SCOTS Parents/Boosters/Alumni/Fans Are you a Booster?

A booster is an individual that:

COMPLIANCE

• Promotes Covenant athletics program. • Makes a financial contribution to Covenant athletics or its booster organizations. • Assists in the recruitment of prospects for Covenant. • Provides benefits (e.g., jobs, occasional meals) to enrolled student-athletes. Once a booster.....Always a booster. It is important to remember that once an individual has been identified as a booster, he or she retains that status forever. If you have questions whether you are considered a booster of Covenant Athletics or if you have questions about what you may or may not do as a booster, please feel free to contact the Compliance Office at tim.sceggel@covenant.edu. What is an extra benefit? Fans and boosters may not provide anything to prospects or currently enrolled student-athletes (or their families) without prior approval from the Compliance Office. If a student-athlete and/or his or her family accepts any benefits of special consideration (e.g., transportation, clothing, money, meals, etc.) based on his or her athletic skill, the student-athlete will lose his or her eligibility and Covenant will be subject to NCAA penalties. Extra benefits can include, but, are not limited to: • Money, gifts, clothing, tickets for entertainment, haircut, and use of a car. • Free or reduced-cost room or board anywhere. • Free or reduced-cost merchandise or services. • Use of Athletics Department copy/fax machines, long distance telephone services or free use of a cell phone. • Typing or editing reports, papers, letters, etc. for a student-athlete. • A loan of money or the consigning of a note to arrange a loan. • The sale or trade of complimentary admissions for merchandise, services or debt repayment. • The sale or trade of ANY items a student-athlete has received for his or her participation in athletics (e.g., gear, clothing, awards). This list is not exhaustive. Please refrain from offering prospects and/or current student-athletes and their families and friends anything that is not available to all students or the general public. Any questions or concerns should be directed to: Tim Sceggel Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance & Operations Email: tim.sceggel@covenant.edu or phone: 706.419.1517
