NCAA DIVISION III

MEMBERSHIPS

In 2013, Covenant became full members of the NCAA Division III following a four year transitional period from 2009-2013. The largest division, in terms of number of schools and number of participants, is Division III comprised by more than 170,000 student-athletes at 444 mostly smaller institutions. Academics are the primary focus for Division III student-athletes. The division minimizes the conflicts between athletics and academics and keeps student-athletes on a path to graduation through shorter practice and playing seasons, the number of contests, no redshirting and regional competition that reduces time away from academic studies. Student-athletes are integrated on campus and treated like all other members of the general student-body, keeping them focused on being a student first. The college experience is a time of learning and growth — a chance to follow passions and develop potential. For student-athletes in Division III, all of this happens most importantly in the classroom and through earning an academic degree. The Division III experience provides for passionate participation in a competitive athletic environment, in which student-athletes push themselves to excellence and build upon their academic success with new challenges and life skills. And student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their full passions and find their potential through a comprehensive educational experience. The Three D’s: Discover Division III student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their interests and passions beyond the classroom and field of play…to discover themselves. Develop Division III institutions provide an environment that encourages student-athletes to develop into well-rounded adults. Small class sizes, the ability to participate in more than one sport, and an emphasis on participating activities outside of the classroom are all hallmarks of the Division III experience. Dedicate Division III institutions expect student-athletes to dedicate themselves to achieving their potential. Student-athletes must manage their busy schedules, keep up with class work and face the same challenges as the rest of the student-body.

HOME OF THE SCOTS Finished for the 2009 season, the Softball program has called this field “home” ever since. The field sits adjacent to the baseball field to complete the baseball/softball complex. The field features a very well-maintained playing surface, oversized bullpens, and spacious dugouts for both the home and visiting teams. In the summer of 2010, permanent bleachers were added behind home plate with a set of bleachers on both the first and third base sides. The scoreboard stands in right field and features the teams’ total runs, hits, and errors along with the current inning and ball-strike-out count. The venue played host to an NCCAA Mid-East Regional tournament in 2012. In 2014, the indoor hitting facility (right) was completed inside the Highlands Fieldhouse. The facility has two hitting areas and is used by both baseball and softball programs.

Sara Russell HEAD COACH

Head Coach

Head softball coach Sara Russell will begin her seventh season at the helm of the program in 2014-15. Russell came aboard the Covenant athletic staff in 2008 to serve as the second coach in the program’s history. Russell arrived at Covenant from Paducah, Ky., where she played and coached at Mid-Continent University, and where her husband, William, served as the baseball coach. William currently works with the Scots baseball staff, assisting head coach Doug Simons, while Sara takes on the coaching duties for the Lady Scots. In her only season as head coach at Mid-Continent, her 2006 squad went 28-26 overall and 14-8 in conference play and won the conference tournament. Russell was named KIAC Coach of the Year. At Covenant, Russell has guided the Lady Scots program to three appearances in the NCCAA National Tournament in 2010, 2011, and 2012. In 2011, Russell coached the Lady Scots to a successful season winning a program record 22 games, concluding with an NCCAA Mid-East Region title, a trip to the NCCAA National Tournament, and the Mid-East Coach of the Year award. In 2012 the team advanced to the NCCAA National Tournament yet again following another season with over 20 wins. During her six years at Covenant, Russell has coached 10 NCCAA All-Americans, eight all-conference performers, and had a team earn the conference’s Champion of Character award (2009, AAC) and Sportsmanship Award (USA South, 2014). Russell grew up in Duncan, British Columbia, where she played on all-star and travel softball teams until she was 18 years old. Her success as a youth included two World Series appearances: 1994 in Portland, Oregon, and 1996 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. While pitching for a traveling team out of Vancouver, she was invited to Mid-Continent for a recruiting visit and tryout that ended up bringing her to the U.S. for a collegiate career. In addition to coaching the Lady Scots, Russell also conducts private pitching lessons for youngsters in the local area. She and her husband, William, live in Chattanooga, Tenn., with their three children.

2015 SEASON PREVIEW

Lady Scots Looking to Take Next Step in 2015 LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The 2014 season was the first for the Covenant softball team competing in the USA South Athletic Conference and, as can be expected, there were some growing pains. The Lady Scots struggled to a 12thplace finish, however, the year did see Covenant improve its overall season win total of the previous year by five games and now they look to take the next step as they begin the 2015 season. This year, head coach Sara Russell is excited to see what her team can do with the infusion of young talent from a strong recruiting class blending with an experienced group of returning players. “I am thrilled about our team,” said Russell, who will enter her seventh year as head coach. “We have a lot of great returning players, as well as a group of newcomers that I am excited about.” Among those returning is sophomore Jordan Brett, who led the Lady Scots in nearly every hitting category last year and was named to the USA South All-Conference second team as a freshman. “I expect great production again from Jordan this year,” Russell said of Brett, who hit .416 (fifth-best in the USA South) with four home runs and 33 RBIs. Joining Brett in the middle of the order is junior Morgan Lane, who also hit above .400 for the Lady Scots with three home runs and 30 RBIs in 2014. Lane was an All-USA South second team selection in 2014. Russell expects similar production from Lane this year after she had more than twice as many extra base hits last year (17) than she did in her freshman campaign (8). Junior Madison Quirk is another returner who can handle the bat and roam center field. Quirk hit .328 with 11 doubles and 23 RBIs last season. Overall, Covenant returns four of its top hitting leaders from last year in Brett, Lane, Quirk and junior Kendall

2015 SEASON PREVIEW

Other returners include sophomores Nicole White and Kaitlyn Sirmons, and senior Morgan Strennen. Senior pitcher Cori Hilt is expected to have an impact for the Lady Scots, both in the circle and as a leader to the group of freshman in the recruiting class. Hilt started 20 games in the circle as a junior and threw 128.1 innings with 18 complete games. The freshman class looks to give Russell depth in the pitching rotation and take some of the burden off Hilt and junior Hannah Rogers. Hilt and Rogers combined to throw all but two innings last year. Russell is looking forward to the extra options and utilizing each pitcher’s strengths to exploit matchups that favor her team. Freshmen Cris Gant (Gardendale, Alabama), Tyler Epes (Water Valley, Mississippi), and Joni Johnson (Forest Hill, Louisiana) all could see significant innings at pitcher this year. Gant, Epes, and Johnson are part of one of the biggest recruiting classes in Russell’s tenure, with 11 freshmen on the roster, many of whom are expected to make an impact. “We have a big recruiting class this year and every freshman on our roster brings something really cool to the table for us,” Russell said. Highlighting the class are two sets of twins: Joni Johnson and Jami Johnson (Forest Hill, Louisiana) and Shade Epes and Tyler Epes (Water Valley, Mississippi). All four players looked good in fall practices and Russell has high hopes for them this year. Other freshmen looking to have an impact this year are first baseman/outfielder Jacey Massetto (Saugus, California), infielder Kasey Hart (Savannah, Georgia), catcher Shannon Schmitt (Clermont, Florida), first baseman/ outfielder Tatum Watford (Orangeburg, South Carolina), infielder Amanda English (Orange Park, Florida) and infielder Kat Andrews (Ocala, Florida). “These players will make my job filling out the lineup card every day very hard,” said Russell. “We have so many good players who are pressing for playing time.” Looking at the big picture, the Lady Scots are picked to finish 11th in the USA South preseason poll, which is where they were picked to finish last season. But Russell thinks with her team’s improved depth, a solid defense, and a strong batting order, that Covenant has a good chance of finishing closer to the middle of the pack in the USA South conference. “We are looking to take a step up in our competitiveness this year,” Russell added. Covenant will open its season on Saturday, Feb. 14, when they host Berry for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.

WE ARE THE

SCOTS NATIONAL TOURNAMENT TEAMS 2010 - NCCAA National Tournament

PROGRAM HISTORY

The 2010 team struggled to start the year, but finished the regular season winning 9 of 13 games. The Lady Scots went 4-2 in the regional tournament before finishing runner-up. Covenant received an at-large berth to the NCCAA National Tournament in West Palm Beach, Fla. The Lady Scots lost 1-0 to Central Baptist and 4-0 to Judson (Ill.) in the tournament.

2011 - NCCAA National Tournament Winning a program-record 22 games, Covenant claimed its first and only NCCAA Mid-East Regional championship by defeating Oakland City 4-3 and 10-4 in a best of three series. In the national tournament at Botetourt County, Va., Covenant fell in nine innings to North Greenville 2-1 before being eliminated by Central Baptist 4-0. Covenant finished the year 22-14 overall and had four NCCAA AllAmericans.

2012 - NCCAA National Tournament Covenant made its third consecutive trip to the NCCAA National Tournament after finishing runner-up in the regionals but received an at-large berth to the national tournament for a second time. Again facing stiff competition at the national level, Covenant fell to Cal Baptist 4-0 in the first game and 1-0 to Trevecca Nazarene (who defeated the Lady Scots in the regionals). The Lady Scots ended the year 21-22 overall.

WE ARE THE

SCOTS Parents/Boosters/Alumni/Fans Are you a Booster?

A booster is an individual that:

COMPLIANCE

• Promotes Covenant athletics program. • Makes a financial contribution to Covenant athletics or its booster organizations. • Assists in the recruitment of prospects for Covenant. • Provides benefits (e.g., jobs, occasional meals) to enrolled student-athletes. Once a booster.....Always a booster. It is important to remember that once an individual has been identified as a booster, he or she retains that status forever. If you have questions whether you are considered a booster of Covenant Athletics or if you have questions about what you may or may not do as a booster, please feel free to contact the Compliance Office at tim.sceggel@covenant.edu. What is an extra benefit? Fans and boosters may not provide anything to prospects or currently enrolled student-athletes (or their families) without prior approval from the Compliance Office. If a student-athlete and/or his or her family accepts any benefits of special consideration (e.g., transportation, clothing, money, meals, etc.) based on his or her athletic skill, the student-athlete will lose his or her eligibility and Covenant will be subject to NCAA penalties. Extra benefits can include, but, are not limited to: • Money, gifts, clothing, tickets for entertainment, haircut, and use of a car. • Free or reduced-cost room or board anywhere. • Free or reduced-cost merchandise or services. • Use of Athletics Department copy/fax machines, long distance telephone services or free use of a cell phone. • Typing or editing reports, papers, letters, etc. for a student-athlete. • A loan of money or the consigning of a note to arrange a loan. • The sale or trade of complimentary admissions for merchandise, services or debt repayment. • The sale or trade of ANY items a student-athlete has received for his or her participation in athletics (e.g., gear, clothing, awards). This list is not exhaustive. Please refrain from offering prospects and/or current student-athletes and their families and friends anything that is not available to all students or the general public. Any questions or concerns should be directed to: Tim Sceggel Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance & Operations Email: tim.sceggel@covenant.edu or phone: 706.419.1517
