NCAA DIVISION III

MEMBERSHIPS

In 2013, Covenant became full members of the NCAA Division III following a four year transitional period from 2009-2013. The largest division, in terms of number of schools and number of participants, is Division III comprised by more than 170,000 student-athletes at 444 mostly smaller institutions. Academics are the primary focus for Division III student-athletes. The division minimizes the conflicts between athletics and academics and keeps student-athletes on a path to graduation through shorter practice and playing seasons, the number of contests, no redshirting and regional competition that reduces time away from academic studies. Student-athletes are integrated on campus and treated like all other members of the general student-body, keeping them focused on being a student first. The college experience is a time of learning and growth — a chance to follow passions and develop potential. For student-athletes in Division III, all of this happens most importantly in the classroom and through earning an academic degree. The Division III experience provides for passionate participation in a competitive athletic environment, in which student-athletes push themselves to excellence and build upon their academic success with new challenges and life skills. And student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their full passions and find their potential through a comprehensive educational experience. The Three D’s: Discover Division III student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their interests and passions beyond the classroom and field of play…to discover themselves. Develop Division III institutions provide an environment that encourages student-athletes to develop into well-rounded adults. Small class sizes, the ability to participate in more than one sport, and an emphasis on participating activities outside of the classroom are all hallmarks of the Division III experience. Dedicate Division III institutions expect student-athletes to dedicate themselves to achieving their potential. Studentathletes must manage their busy schedules, keep up with class work and face the same challenges as the rest of the student-body.

Joanna Ehman HEAD COACH

Head Coach

Joanna Ehman was named Head Volleyball Coach at Covenant in the spring of 2013. She served two years as an assistant under former Lady Scots head coach Heather Taylor, helping Covenant to 47 wins over those two seasons. Ehman will enter her first season as one of the youngest head women’s volleyball coaches in the country as she takes over for Heather Taylor who won 124 games in eight seasons. “I feel blessed to be able to take on this role. Coach [Heather] Taylor has poured so much into the team during her time here and has built a successful volleyball program. Now, after playing for her and coaching under her, I have the opportunity to continue to build on what she established,” said Ehman at the time of her hiring. “Coach Taylor not only has a passion for the game, but a heart for ministering to her players. I am thankful for the example she has set for me as well as the team, and I am excited to move into this role after being mentored by her.” “I am excited to have Joanna’s leadership as we move the volleyball program into the next phase with hopefully full membership in the NCAA and USA South Athletic Conference,” commented Covenant Director of Athletics Kyle Taylor. “She is an incredibly hard worker, knowledgeable volleyball coach, and up and coming recruiter. She has a passion for the game of volleyball, knows her stuff, and what she doesn’t know has the humility to ask questions and learn.” Ehman’s playing experience started when she was a child and continued all the way through college, where she was a setter for the Lady Scots from 2006 to 2009. Her collegiate career defined her as one of the best setters in conference - both the AAC (2006-2008) and GSAC (2009) - and Covenant history. Head Coach Heather Taylor noted Ehman to be a true student of the game and consequently named her captain of the team during her junior and senior years. She finished her final season with 1,769 assists, 699 kills and 1,213 digs in 461 career games. During her high school years, Joanna was a setter and outside hitter for the Lady Eagles of North Cobb Christian School in Kennesaw, Georgia. In 2009, she was inducted into the NCCS Hall of Fame for her efforts on the court. Ehman’s coaching experience began in 2008 when she led a 16-year-old club team for Dig-toWin, a volleyball club operating out of Chattanooga. She gained further coaching experience

with Choo Choo City Volleyball Club, prior to taking an assistant coaching position at Bryan College for the 2010 season. As the top assistant at Bryan, Ehman was able to stake her first collegiate victory during a medical absence taken by head coach Leo Sayles. For the season, the Lady Lions went 22-15 before being eliminated from the semifinal round of the AAC Conference Tournament. Ehman holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in business from Covenant College. She is married to Doug Ehman (Covenant, ‘09) and the couple lives on Lookout Mountain, Ga.

ASSISTANT COACHES

Jason Rhine Full-time Assistant

Jason Rhine was hired in August of 2013 and the 2013 season will mark his first with the volleyball program. Rhine came to Covenant from Trinity International University where he assisted for three seasons under Trojans head coach Karen Hall while completing his Master of Divinity at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. While at TIU, Rhine was responsible for practice planning, scouting and in-game coaching. Additionally, he assisted in recruiting, travel arrangements and other duties. “I am excited about bringing Jason on board at Covenant,” Ehman said. “He has a heart for the Lord and a clear passion for coaching as his ministry.” Rhine also gained experience as a coach as he guided two different teams within the Wisconsin Juniors Volleyball Club organization in 2012 and 2013 along with two seasons as head coach at Quality Schools International in Dongguan, China from 2008-09. “I’m really excited to help further the mission of Covenant College by joining the volleyball program,” said Rhine. “I hope together we can build upon recent success as we look toward post-season eligibility in Division III.” Rhine graduated cum laude from Wheaton College in May of 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Computer Science and Biblical Studies. He completed his Master of Divinity degree in May of 2013 and graduated summa cum laude. “I am confident that bringing his experience and new perspective into our program is a step in the right direction as we work to be competitive in the USA South,” continued Ehman.

2013 SEASON PREVIEW

New head coach. New assistant coach. New conference. New is the word around the 2013 version of the Covenant volleyball team. First-year head coach Joanna Ehman, along with new assistant Jason Rhine, mixed with a new conference membership in the USA South make up much of the storyline for this year’s Lady Scots. Ehman takes over for Heather Taylor, who stepped down after eight seasons and 124 victories, after serving for two seasons as Taylor’s top assistant and a four-year playing career as a Lady Scot. The first-year coach also recently brought along Rhine from Trinity International University to be her full-time assistant. The last two seasons have yielded two of the best teams in school history. Last year’s squad finished 25-8 overall and a perfect 10-0 in the Great South Athletic Conference to capture the program’s first conference championship since 1979. In 2011, the Lady Scots finished 22-9. Gone are the days of the Great South Athletic Conference as Covenant was officially accepted into the USA South Athletic Conference this summer. In addition, Covenant was accepted as active members of NCAA Division III meaning eligibility for postseason competition at both the conference and national levels. The USA South offers a step up in competition, but Ehman believes her team can compete. “It’s exciting to think about the level of competition we are going to face this season,” said Ehman. “Every game in every match is going to be important, and not just for us. It’s going to take a lot of focus and hard work from our girls, but I know we are in a good position to establish ourselves as strong competitors in the USA South.” USA South coaches also believe that Covenant can compete as they voted the Lady Scots to finish second in the South Division and fourth overall in the 13-team league. Only Maryville, Averett and North Carolina Wesleyan were ranked above the Lady Scots. The key reason why both Ehman and the USA South feels that Covenant can play at a high level? Four returning starters, plus a returning libero, and incoming freshmen that could play an immediate role. Covenant returns the reigning Great South Athletic Conference player and freshman of the year in Chelsea VanDyk. The sophomore from Manhattan, Mont., led the GSAC in several offensive categories last year. VanDyk registered 433 kills, the most for a Lady Scot since Kate Hampson’s 490 in 2006, while averaging 3.77 kills per set and producing a hitting percentage of .390. VanDyk earned GSAC player of the week honors twice during the year and was also selected to the NCCAA Mid-East all-region team. The lone senior on this year’s squad is libero/defensive specialist Estes Carlson. The Eaton, Colo., native played in every set last season and tallied 501 digs (4.36 per set) to easily lead the team and the conference. Carlson was named to the GSAC all-conference team and was an NCCAA MidEast honorable mention. Her leadership will be counted on as the Lady Scots have a roster with 10 of 12 players as either a freshman or sophomore.

WE ARE THE

SCOTS 2013 SEASON PREVIEW

Another key member of this year’s squad will be junior setter Stephanie Kirkpatrick. The all-academic performer from Huntsville, Ala., showed what she was capable of last season in her first year of being the starting setter. Kirkpatrick recorded 1021 assists (8.88 per set) and had 40 or more assists in four matches, including a career-high 52 against Piedmont. Kirkpatrick was named to the GSAC all-conference team, NCCAA Mid-East all-region squad and earned academic honors from the GSAC and CoSIDA Academic All-District. “Those returners will play an important role as we move forward,” noted Ehman of VanDyk, Carlson and Kirkpatrick. “Other underclassmen will have the opportunity to take on new roles as well.” Sophomores Cora Schroeder and Hannah Rogers also return after each having a successful freshman season to solidify the rotation. The other returner from last season is sophomore Kelsey Mathis. Ehman has brought in four freshman in Journey Amos (Houston, Texas), Caroline McLeod (Dallas, Texas), Caroline Cone (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) and Mariah Corney (Fullerton, Calif.). “I am looking forward to seeing our freshmen class contribute this season,” continued Ehman. “We are bringing in a great group of girls who are eager to work hard and establish themselves quickly in the program and I believe they have the tools necessary to make that happen.” Sophomores Jaclyn Stuart (Locust Grove, Ga.) and Anna Swain (Woodruff, S.C.) round out the 12-member varsity team this fall. The schedule is a tough one for the Lady Scots as they have only eight home matches this season. Covenant will host a USA South quad-match on October 19 with North Carolina Wesleyan, Maryville and William Peace coming to Lookout Mountain. Covenant will play two matches that day against North Carolina Wesleyan and William Peace. “With the combination of moving into a new conference and a significant amount of travel with this year’s schedule, we definitely have our work cut out for us,” Ehman added. “This team is made up of hard workers who are motivated to build on the success the program has been experiencing over the past few seasons, though, and I know we are up for the challenge.”

For the second consecutive season, the Cove-

2012 SEASON IN REVIEW

nant volleyball team posted 22 or more victories. The Lady Scots finished the 2012 season with a 25-8 record and accumulated a plethora of accolades along the way. Covenant finished with a perfect 10-0 record in conference play to earn the GSAC regular season title as the Lady Scots dropped just one set in conference matches. The conference title for the Lady Scots marked the first NCAA Division III conference title for the volleyball program. The last two seasons, Covenant has posted a record of 47-17 overall and 19-2 in conference matches. The volleyball teams have also garnered numerous individual awards throughout the last two years as they became the strongest program within the GSAC. The postseason awards were many. First, freshman Chelsea Van Dyk was voted GSAC Freshman of the Year and Player of the Year and also earned a spot on the NCCAA Mid-East All-Region team. Sophomore Stephanie Kirkpatrick was selected GSAC All-Conference, NCCAA Mid-East All-Region, and CoSIDA Academic All-District. Junior Estes Carlson and senior Jessica Chittenden each received All-GSAC honors as well. Freshman Cora Schroeder was chosen as a GSAC All-Freshman performer along with Van Dyk.

Head Coach Heather Taylor earned Coach of the Year honors both in the GSAC and the NCCAA Mid-East Region. Taylor recorded her 100th win as head coach at Covenant during the season as well. One of the highlights of the season came during Homecoming weekend. Covenant hosted a tri-match and, in its second match of the day, faced Asbury University. Asbury had defeated the Lady Scots in three sets in the 2011 NCCAA Mid-East Region tournament which had Covenant looking to avenge the tough postseason loss. Asbury went ahead 2-1 going into the fourth set on this Saturday afternoon. Covenant responded and pulled out the next two sets to cap the come-from-behind win. Covenant had a stretch during the middle part of the season where they won 12 of 13 matches. The Lady Scots finished the regular season having won eight in a row and then won the first match at the NCCAA Mid-East Region Tournament before falling twice to get eliminated. Chittenden and Cheney are the two graduating seniors on this season’s team. With almost everyone expected to return next season, Covenant looks to have more success as the school moves into full-time NCAA Division III member status and also a member of the USA South Conference.

In addition, Chittenden, Kirkpatrick, and senior Paige Cheney were all recognized on the GSAC All-Academic team.
