WOMEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE 2013
SCOTLAND YARD HOME OF THE SCOTS Built in 1989, Scotland Yard is home to both the men’s and women’s soccer programs at Covenant. The field, located in the southern part of the campus, just past Ashe Activity Center, is of regulation dimensions (118 yards by 70 yards). Scotland Yard boasts cement bleachers, along with two newer sets of metal stands, and a retaining wall which provides fan seating along with a new entrance and awnings. Across from the north-side bleachers, are the team and press areas on the south side of the field. Both teams sit in covered dugouts. During the summer of 2008, the field was completely overhauled by installing a drainage system and sprinkler system. Also a crowning of the field was performed and a sand base was put in place for better drainage. Lights were installed for the first time before the 2010 season.

NCAA DIVISION III
MEMBERSHIPS
In 2013, Covenant became full members of the NCAA Division III following a four year transitional period from 2009-2013. The largest division, in terms of number of schools and number of participants, is Division III comprised by more than 170,000 student-athletes at 444 mostly smaller institutions. Academics are the primary focus for Division III student-athletes. The division minimizes the conflicts between athletics and academics and keeps student-athletes on a path to graduation through shorter practice and playing seasons, the number of contests, no redshirting and regional competition that reduces time away from academic studies. Student-athletes are integrated on campus and treated like all other members of the general student-body, keeping them focused on being a student first. The college experience is a time of learning and growth — a chance to follow passions and develop potential. For student-athletes in Division III, all of this happens most importantly in the classroom and through earning an academic degree. The Division III experience provides for passionate participation in a competitive athletic environment, in which student-athletes push themselves to excellence and build upon their academic success with new challenges and life skills. And student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their full passions and find their potential through a comprehensive educational experience. The Three D’s: Discover Division III student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their interests and passions beyond the classroom and field of play…to discover themselves. Develop Division III institutions provide an environment that encourages student-athletes to develop into well-rounded adults. Small class sizes, the ability to participate in more than one sport, and an emphasis on participating activities outside of the classroom are all hallmarks of the Division III experience. Dedicate Division III institutions expect student-athletes to dedicate themselves to achieving their potential. Studentathletes must manage their busy schedules, keep up with class work and face the same challenges as the rest of the student-body.

Mark Duble HEAD COACH
Head Coach
Mark Duble will enter into his 20th season as the Lady Scots’ head soccer coach in the 2013 season. He began coaching the Lady Scots club team in 1993 before the program became varsity in ’94. He “grew up” at Covenant, as his father was a Vice-President for Advancement at Covenant College in the 1960’s and 1970’s, and he played for, and captained, the Scots soccer team as a player. In 19 seasons with the Lady Scots his squads have compiled a 206-118-24 record and an amazing 116-25-11 conference record. The 2006 team won the NAIA regional to advance to the NAIA national tournament for the first time in school history. Duble has earned the Conference Coach of the Year award five times, and the Regional Coach of the Year award in 2004-05. All told, during Duble’s tenure as head coach, the program has produced nine all-americans, two national tournament appearances (one in the NAIA and one in the NCCAA), eight conference regular season championships and four conference tournament titles. In addition to the tremendous on-field success, 40 players have earned national scholar-athlete awards from either the NAIA or the NCCAA. In 2012, the Lady Scots posted a 15-5-1 record and 9-1 in GSAC play which earned them a share of the conference regular season title, a first at the NCAA Division III level. The 15 wins was tied for the second most in school history. Covenant placed seven players on the All-Conference team and had one NCCAA AllAmerican (Kathryn Allison).

Heading into the 20th season of its existence, all under current head coach Mark Duble,
2013 SEASON PREVIEW
the Covenant women’s soccer program is getting set to start the 2013 year on Friday at Berry.
The Lady Scots are coming off an outstanding 2012 campaign that saw them claim a share of the Great South Athletic Conference regular season title and finish 15-5-1, but the program has experienced change since last season. Covenant is no longer in the Great South Athletic Conference as the institution was officially accepted into the USA South Athletic Conference over the summer. Covenant was also admitted as active members to NCAA Division III meaning postseason and national award opportunities. The USA South offers a step up in competition, but the Lady Scots look to be in good shape. Covenant was picked to finish fifth in the 13-team league by the conference coaches in the preseason poll. “We are very excited to be headed into the USA South Conference where we hope to compete for the conference title and a bid into the NCAA National Tournament,” said Duble. “The level of competition in the USA South is significant and we are a relatively young team, but we are very accustomed to these type of challenges and we relish the opportunity to challenge ourselves and our conference opponents for a chance for an NCAA berth.” The Lady Scots also had 10 seniors depart after last season, opening the door wide for new talent to shine on Lookout Mountain. Just two seniors in Mary Buys and Beth Wilkening are listed on this year’s roster to go along with 10 freshmen. Buys and junior Ally Jennings look to lead the team in the back line as both were key contributors to last season’s success. Buys had two goals last season and Jennings recorded an assist, but the work of these two players goes beyond the box score. Covenant also boasts two solid goalkeepers in juniors Lucy Johnson and Hannah Bales. Bales got the majority of the starts last season as she compiled a 9-4-1 record with a 0.88 goals against average. Johnson was also impressive as she went 6-1 and allowed three goals in 595 minutes at the net. The Lady Scots received solid play from a pair of midfield freshmen last season in Ruth Terry and Anne Charlotte Strawbridge, both of whom return this year. Terry is the team’s leading returning goal scorer as she netted four last season, which was good for third on the team. Strawbridge had a goal and an assist in 2012 and earned GSAC all-freshmen team honors.

WE ARE THE
SCOTS 2013 SEASON PREVIEW
Also returning this season is junior Bethany Logan and sophomores Rachel Bernard and Jenna Vreeland. All three players saw significant playing time in 2012 and look to contribute this season. There is a wealth of incoming freshmen on the roster as well. Duble expects Natalie Smith (Johnson City, Tenn.), Kaitlyn Winking (Waynesville, Mo.), Rachel Setzer (Knoxville, Tenn.), Andrea Hunt (Greenville, S.C.), Anna Porch (Arden Hills, Minn.), Gabby Powell (Woodbridge, Va.) and Madison Smartt (McMinnville, Tenn.) to “come in with immediate impact potential and enhance an already stellar returning lineup.” Three other freshmen also joined the Lady Scots this season in Abby Horton (Ringgold, Ga.), Sophie Gianis (Sag Harbor, N.Y.) and Katherine Keller (Dyersburg, Tenn.). Entering into a new phase of the program’s history with the transition complete to the USA South and NCAA Division III, Duble is looking for his young but talented team to make the adjustment to a “higher level of play.” The schedule certainly offers the challenge. Covenant will begin the season at Berry on Friday followed with a match against Guilford on Saturday. Six times this season Covenant will play matches on consecutive days, with four of those occurences coming inside USA South play. Covenant will host three of the top four preseason USA South selections in Maryville (Oct. 2), Meredith (Sept. 28) and Piedmont (Oct. 30), and go on the road to preseason favorite Averett (Oct. 25). “Overall, we are looking for our girls to make a quick transition with an eye on challenging for a conference title over the next few years,” said Duble of the new conference. In non-conference play, Covenant will face HCAC preseason favorite Transylvania along with Centre, Birmingham Southern and Sewanee, among others.

The women’s soccer team had its most success-
2012 SEASON IN REVIEW
ful season since moving from the NAIA. The Lady Scots finished 15-5-1, just one win shy of tying a school record for victories, and claimed a share of the GSAC regular season title with a 9-1 conference record. The conference championship is the first NCAA Division III conference title for the women’s soccer program. The season brought many highlight moments, but one of the most notable ones came during Homecoming. On October 6, Covenant defeated Tennessee Temple 2-0 to give head coach Mark Duble his 200th career victory at Covenant. After the match, current and former Lady Scots players came out to midfield to congratulate Duble, who finished his 19th season as head coach, on his milestone victory. The Lady Scots had an eight-match winning streak, and won 11 of 12 at one point during the season. Defense was a big reason why Covenant was able to notch 15 victories. The Lady Scots allowed just 16 goals all year, a goals against average of 0.76, and went a stretch of four matches without allowing a single score. Covenant recorded 11 shutouts, out of 21 total matches, as a team this season. Covenant managed to win 15 matches despite having to play not one, but two schools ranked No. 1 in Division III. The Lady Scots opened the season on the road against preseason No. 1 Messiah College and were defeated 4-0. Messiah would go on and win the Division III championship. Covenant also hosted top-ranked Emory University on October 22 and fell 3-0.
42
The Lady Scots were the only team in all of Division III that had to face two teams ranked No. 1 at the time of their match. Senior Katelyn Newsome led Covenant with nine goals on the season and earned a spot on the GSAC all-conference team. Six other Lady Scots joined Newsome on the all-GSAC team including senior Kathryn Allison, junior Mary Buys, senior Sheri Koenig, sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Bales, senior Mo Cross, and freshman Anne Charlotte Strawbridge. Newsome also earned NCCAA Mid-East All-Region honors, finishing second in the Region Player of the Year voting, along with Allison, and Cross. Cross was second on the team in goals (five) and points (15) and led Covenant in assists with five. Freshman Ruth Terry had four goals. The women were defeated in the semifinal round of the NCCAA Mid-East Region Tournament by Trevecca Nazarene 2-0 to end the season. In addition to on-field success, Covenant also produced eight players on the GSAC all-academic team led by Ally Jennings, Hannah Weichbrodt, Amy Dykstra, Beth Wilkening, Newsome, Allison, Koenig, and Buys. Five Lady Scots were recognized on the NCCAA Scholar-Athlete team with Newsome, Koenig, Weichbrodt, Wilkening, and Buys all earning honors. Covenant will graduate 10 of its players this year. However, several contributors on this season’s squad will return next year for Duble and the Lady Scots.
