NCAA DIVISION III

MEMBERSHIPS

In 2013, Covenant became full members of the NCAA Division III following a four year transitional period from 2009-2013. The largest division, in terms of number of schools and number of participants, is Division III comprised by more than 170,000 student-athletes at 444 mostly smaller institutions. Academics are the primary focus for Division III student-athletes. The division minimizes the conflicts between athletics and academics and keeps student-athletes on a path to graduation through shorter practice and playing seasons, the number of contests, no redshirting and regional competition that reduces time away from academic studies. Student-athletes are integrated on campus and treated like all other members of the general student-body, keeping them focused on being a student first. The college experience is a time of learning and growth — a chance to follow passions and develop potential. For student-athletes in Division III, all of this happens most importantly in the classroom and through earning an academic degree. The Division III experience provides for passionate participation in a competitive athletic environment, in which student-athletes push themselves to excellence and build upon their academic success with new challenges and life skills. And student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their full passions and find their potential through a comprehensive educational experience. The Three D’s: Discover Division III student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their interests and passions beyond the classroom and field of play…to discover themselves. Develop Division III institutions provide an environment that encourages student-athletes to develop into well-rounded adults. Small class sizes, the ability to participate in more than one sport, and an emphasis on participating activities outside of the classroom are all hallmarks of the Division III experience. Dedicate Division III institutions expect student-athletes to dedicate themselves to achieving their potential. Studentathletes must manage their busy schedules, keep up with class work and face the same challenges as the rest of the student-body.

Katie Stanford HEAD COACH

Head Coach

Katie Stanford will begin her third year of coaching both the men’s and women’s cross country teams in the fall of 2013. She joined the athletic staff as the head men’s and women’s cross country coach in the spring of 2011. Following the departures of former head coaches Debby Vannoy and Scott Williams, Stanford became the third cross country coach in as many years during her first season with the Scots and Lady Scots. Stanford took over a Covenant cross country program that was coming off of a very successful 2010 campaign during which it ‘unofficially’ saw its men’s and women’s teams respectively finish first and second in the Great South Athletic Conference Championship meet. In her inaugural 2011 campaign with the teams, Stanford continued the squads’ recent successes, guiding the Lady Scots to an ‘unofficial’ first-place finish and the Scots to a second-place prize at the GSAC Championships. Under her direction, the teams combined for two wins, six runner-up performances, and 10 top-five finishes in 2011. Success also found the programs in the 2012 campaign. The women’s team once again “unofficially” won the Great South Athletic Conference championship and two runners earned All-GSAC honors. Stanford also successfully oversaw the revitalization of the cross country trails on Covenant’s campus and, because of this, Covenant hosted a meet for the first time since 2007. Prior to Covenant, Stanford served as the cross country and distance track coach for Chattanooga’s Notre Dame High School, where she worked for one cross country season (2010) and two track seasons (2010-2011), following a four year stint as the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s assistant cross country coach and head recruiter. During her time there, the Lady Mocs were the Southern Conference cross country champions from 2006-2008, and the Mocs were runners-up in 2005, 2007, and 2008. Stanford also served as the women’s assistant cross country coach at the University of West Georgia from 2003-2004 while obtaining her Master of Public Administration. Stanford attended Samford University and earned a BA in Political Science in 2003. She competed for the Bulldogs in cross country, indoor and outdoor track from 1998 to 2003. During her collegiate career, she twice earned All-Conference track honors and was the Atlantic Sun Conference 1500 meter champion in 2002.

Tera Davidson Part-Time Assistant

Tera Davidson is in her first season of assisting with the cross country programs. Davidson graduated from Covenant in 2012 and was a successful cross country runner herself. She earned Great South Athletic Conference Runner of the Year in 2011 as she helped the women’s team to a conference championship. “During my years of running at Covenant, one truth has really shaped my life: nothing worthwhile is ever accomplished without great difficulty,” said Davidson. “Running is a tough sport and those who commit to it are tough people. God has called his children to challenging tasks that require more than our own strength to complete. He has used running to teach me the qualities of endurance, faithfulness, consistency and passion that are very useful to me in my daily battle against sin. I look forward to this task of coaching that God has so graciously called me to. Soli Deo Gloria.” She is married to former Covenant soccer player Hunt Davidson. She is also employed at Chattanooga Neighborhood Enterprise.

The cross country teams both experienced

2012 SEASON IN REVIEW

success in head coach Katie Stanford’s second season. The men had three top-five finishes, while the women had three wins and five top-five finishes. The women won both the GSAC Pre-Conference and Conference meets, although with Covenant’s transition to Division III, the Lady Scots were ineligible for the official conference title. Covenant also hosted a meet for the first time in recent memory. The Scots and Lady Scots competed against Maryville College on August 31 in the Scots Opener on Lookout Mountain. Both the men’s and women’s teams came out in first place in front of a boisterous home crowd. The women were led all year by sophomore Beth Burgess who set personal bests in distances of 2-mile, 5k, and 6k this season. Burgess finished in the top 10 five times and placed 16th competing with several NCAA Division I runners at the UTC PowerAde Invitational. Alongside Burgess was freshman Spookie Eaves, who won two meets individually and placed in top 10 five times. Eaves and fellow freshman Melanie White each earned GSAC All-Freshman honors. Stanford was pleased with her women’s team as a whole as they battled injuries during the second half of the season. “Struggling with injuries during the 2nd half of the season, the girls gutted out one more race [at NCCAA nationals] and I’m proud of them. We ended the season on several positive notes and that is all you can ask for.”

24

The men this season were led by a pair of Stephens. Sophomore Stephen Dillon placed in the top 25 four times and set a new personal best in the 8k at the NCCAA Cross Country National Championships with a time of 28:40.74. Dillon was second in the Scots Opener, 23rd in the UTC PowerAde Invitational where he and the rest of the men’s team competed against some Division I talent. Another sophomore, Stephen Harper, also had four top 25 finishes. Harper placed 24th in the UTC PowerAde Invitational. Harper was third in the Scots Opener and placed 13th in the Maryville College Invitational. Covenant had several newcomers to the team this season that progressed as the season went on. By the end of the year, sophomore Jake Sikkema and senior Nate Shelden had set a new personal best in the 8k, while sophomore Jack Williams nearly set a personal record in the 8k as well. “These guys worked really hard this season and I’m glad their hard work paid off and they can finish the season on a high note,” added Stanford. With success experienced this season with young teams, the future looks bright for both cross country programs as Covenant moves into the USA South Conference and full-time NCAA Division III membership next season.

CROSS COUNTRY MEDIA GUIDE 2013

COVENANT COLLEGE

WE ARE THE

SCOTS Parents/Boosters/Alumni/Fans Are you a Booster?

A booster is an individual that:

COMPLAINCE

• Promotes Covenant athletics program. • Makes a financial contribution to Covenant athletics or its booster organizations. • Assists in the recruitment of prospects for Covenant. • Provides benefits (e.g., jobs, occasional meals) to enrolled student-athletes. Once a booster.....Always a booster. It is important to remember that once an individual has been identified as a booster, he or she retains that status forever. If you have questions whether you are considered a booster of Covenant Athletics or if you have questions about what you may or may not do as a booster, please feel free to contact the Compliance Office at tim. sceggel@covenant.edu. What is an extra benefit? Fans and boosters may not provide anything to prospects or currently enrolled student-athletes (or their families) without prior approval from the Compliance Office. If a student-athlete and/or his or her family accepts any benefits of special consideration (e.g., transportation, clothing, money, meals, etc.) based on his or her athletic skill, the student-athlete will lose his or her eligibility and Covenant will be subject to NCAA penalties. Extra benefits can include, but, are not limited to: • Money, gifts, clothing, tickets for entertainment, haircut, and use of a car. • Free or reduced-cost room or board anywhere. • Free or reduced-cost merchandise or services. • Use of Athletics Department copy/fax machines, long distance telephone services or free use of a cell phone. • Typing or editing reports, papers, letters, etc. for a student-athlete. • A loan of money or the consigning of a note to arrange a loan. • The sale or trade of complimentary admissions for merchandise, services or debt repayment. • The sale or trade of ANY items a student-athlete has received for his or her participation in athletics (e.g., gear, clothing, awards). This list is not exhaustive. Please refrain from offering prospects and/or current student-athletes and their families and friends anything that is not available to all students or the general public. Any questions or concerns should be directed to: Tim Sceggel Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance & Operations Email: tim.sceggel@covenant.edu or phone: 706.419.1517
