A Little Piece of History Hospital radio in Coventry initially started in 1971 when an American patient wanted to listen to Coventry City football matches and found out that it wasn’t possible. When he got out of the hospital he set up a trust fund which paid for the landlines to connect the hospital to the Sky Blues old home ground of Highfield Road. All home matches were then broadcast until the move from Highfield Road to the Ricoh Arena in 2005. It was soon realised that the network used for broadcasting the games could be used for a hospital radio circuit. This was the beginning so in 1972 Hospital Radio in Coventry was established. In the early 1970’s the station was known as Walsgrave Radio. In 1980 it joined the Hospitals Voluntary Organisation and the name changed to Coventry Hospitals Broadcasting Service. Many members soon joined, and a variety of programmes were soon winging their way to patients in the numerous hospitals in Coventry. During the1980’s when local radio stations were springing up, there was a steady stream of volunteers eager to learn the skills of broadcasting so they could apply for jobs. Some of our Past volunteers Include: Jeff Harris - Went on to Mercia Sound from us and is now Programmer/Presenter at Radio FAB FM. Jim Lee - Went on to Mercia Sound, then to BBC CWR and is now a freelance journalist who sometimes works as a continuity announcer on BBC4 and BBC7. Sara Blizzard - Also went on to Mercia Sound, starting as a sales person and ended up presenting her own show when station controller, Stuart Linnell gave her a chance. She is now a weather presenter on BBC Midlands Today.
Jenny Costello - Trained with us and later went on to present a show on Radio 1. She is now a presenter on Internet station Solid Gold Gem. Kevin Reide - Now a news presenter for Midlands Today. Barnie Choudury - Barnie volunteered with us during the early 1980’s. From then he became a trainee at BBC and went on to become Social Affairs Correspondent. 2003 saw the introduction of a 24 hour broadcasting system and the use of new software packages, enabling us to broadcast direct from a computer to the patients. This system made it quicker to play a patients request since most of our CD music is held on the database. In July 2006 a brand new hospital was opened and we moved out of a broom cupboard into a state of the art studio which now broadcasts to about 1200 beds through the Hospedia bedside units. In 2014 Coventry Hospital Radio as it’s now known started broadcasting online via it’s own website www.coventryhospitalradio.org as well as throughout Coventry University Hospital.

Meet Our Committee but due to meetings it turns out to be a great deal more. I’m what they call a jack of all trades with my roles covering all admin issues, training new presenters and fitting in 3 different style shows every week.
Gary Davies
Secretary &Training officer After suffering a stroke which stopped me from working in 2003 I found it really hard to find something to occupy myself during the day. As I was interested in music a friend suggested applying to join hospital radio. This I did and started volunteering for Coventry Hospital Radio in 2010. At present I normally volunteer on Wednesday and Friday afternoons averaging about 10 -12 hours a week,
Andrew Smith
Technician & Engineer It’s my job to purchase and keep the equipment and computers throughout the studios working as it should. Also to make sure the equipment works at outside events
As secretary it’s my job to ensure all administrative issues relating to CHR are handled correctly and quickly. Be responsible to the CHR Committee for all issues relating to the membership and with the support of the Voluntary Services Facilitator be responsible for all official correspondence, the convening of meetings, the preparation of the minutes of all meetings and to be the first point of contact for members of CHR regarding administrative issues. I find that volunteering is a way of paying back what I have received and also gives me something to occupy my mind. I have had multiple jobs but at this time am retired through ill health.

Meet Our Committee Dan Sambell
Programme Auditor It’s my job to be accountable for organising the programme schedule, appointing volunteers to programmes, coordinating replacements for absent presenters and preparing play lists, also Instructing the members on the operation of the patients’ bedside entertainment units.
I've been a presenter on CHR for over three years. I combine this with studying Radio & Audio Production at Birmingham City University. My weekly show is dedicated to jazz, soul, funk and reggae music from the 1960's to the present day. If you enjoyed going to clubs and discos you'll love this show.
Nigel Stevens
Fundraising Officer "I'm Nigel Stevens, I’m accountable for raising money for CHR by organising fundraising events, seeking donations, advertising and sponsorship and also responsible for liaising with the Trust’s Charitable Fundraising Manager to organise fundraising events and report back to the Committee.
Whilst this is the music genre, the show also contains celebrity gossip and birthdays and chat about things in the newspapers that have made me laugh or made me mad in the previous seven days. For those who enjoy quizzing, the show also features our weekly Pub Quiz - an opportunity to beat our resident quizzer in the studio! Join me between 3 - 4 pm each Thursday for the Jazz & Soul show"

Meet Our Committee which was also the year I started with CHR.
Simon Tidmarsh P.R. Officer
I’m accountable for raising the profile of CHR, promoting the station through various networking channels such as Facebook, Twitter, local media etc. With the support of the Voluntary Services Facilitator edit and publish a CHR monthly communication media on CHR and ensure its distribution to all members. I have studied media, especially radio since 2011 at City College Coventry
I am also a presenter at the radio station and my shows have become very popular playing some great music. I personally think the best part of my show is the stressbusters which is an hour of relaxing music which aims to bring back happy memories. It is always nice when I hear the audience like listening to the stressbusters section of my show either inside or outside the hospital. CHR means a lot to me as it has helped me grow into the person I am today, not just helping me become a better presenter but also giving me confidence in talking to the members of public week in/week out and this also gave me the passion to study media (also thanks to Gary for sticking behind me for 5 years and more). CHR has found me some new friends who I have grown a fantastic relationship with and it always feels like I’m in a family environment."

Meet Our Team In Portugal where I grew up there are no radio stations in the hospitals so I think this idea is fabulous. I’m also enjoying so much developing my skills by doing radio. During the day my time is taken up working as a museum assistant and tour guide at Coventry Transport Museum.
Marta Amado After I arrived in Coventry in September 2014 I started looking for jobs or places to volunteer. I found the Coventry Hospital Radio website and contacted Gary. I started training in October 2014 and now present a regular show on Wednesdays at 6pm. The title of my show is Musical Landscapes where I play international music, talk about cultural suggestions and try and encourage the listeners to let their images flow, or bring back their wonderful memories. My aim is to make the patients days happier while they are in the hospital. Born in Coventry a few years ago. I have been involved in hospital radio in Coventry and Nuneaton. I started at Coventry Hospital Broadcasting in the early 70's when it was in its infancy, and the studio was literally a broom cupboard. I also helped with the set up and inception of Nuneatons hospital radio. Between family, hospital radio and CCFC not much time for anything else, I have to fit work in somewhere.
Writing is my passion since I was a little girl. I became a writer with two romance books published in Portuguese. I am at present writing my third book, this time in two languages: Portuguese and English. Inspiration comes from everywhere, from a song, a landscape, a newspaper article, a situation in the street, in work. People, etc. I also love dancing, especially ballroom dancing, Salsa, Kizomba and Bachata. I love creativity and the infinite possibility of creating something In Portugal I did an acting course and also some theatre plays. I loved this as theatre is another passion of mine.

Ken Cupid
Born in Gulson Road Hospital, I've lived all my life in Coventry. I attended Sherborne Fields
I am retired and have been volunteering with Coventry Hospital Radio since 2014 and currently present a gospel show which goes out every Sunday evening at 7pm.
School and Princethorpe College in my youth. Have been a regular attendee at Cov & Wark Hospital and Walsgrave from the days of Dr. Williams to the Haematology Dept today. I work for a well known bank, have an affinity for cricket, rugby union and rugby league, I also regularly attend St. Thomas More Church in Cheylesmore where I am a reader. Very proud of what I do and I hope to take that forward for CHR in the future.
The aim of the show is to let my listeners know that Jesus is still alive today and also to make them feel happy whilst recovering in the hospital. When not attending the radio I have plenty of hobbies to keep me occupied such as playing cricket and quite a few instruments such as guitar, mandolin, banjo and drums

Meet Our Team Music has always been my biggest love, I play guitar, piano, mandolin and bodrhan. I also love films, theatre and CCFC (for my sins!). As well as that I'm a loud ginger music lover.
Tara Court As well as volunteering at UHCW, I also work here in the renal department. I'm married with three cats, (no kids!)
My favourite group has to be Elbow. The lyrics are poetic and lively and the music is swooney and lovely. I've seen them live 3 times and cried each time due to the overwhelming beauty of the music and the on stage chat of their singer Guy Garvey. Seeing Elbow is a religious experience. My favourite song of theirs is Scattered Black and Whites. It's just beautiful.
Nutan Desai
Sat Dhaiwal
After retiring in 2007 I started voluntary work at University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire serving tea to the patients on various wards and helping with administrative work at the Arden Centre, a bit later I joined hospital radio. I also love drawing and painting in my spare time and singing. I also teach yoga and nin yoga classes mainly for women, so in general I like to keep myself busy.
I worked for BBC CWR as the Coventry Blaze Ice Skating Team correspondent between 2000 and 2005, I like to entertain the listeners whilst also informing them about what is going on. I'm an easy going person who enjoys family life.

Meet Our Team decided I wanted to give something back to a place I feel at home in so I decided to volunteer for hospital radio. At present I present a show on Thursday afternoons covering Reggae and Soul, occasionally throwing in an 80’s show case, that is another music love love of mine.
Denise Francis
I started volunteering in December 2013 because I love music, It has helped me through may dark times throughout my illness. I loved the care care that I received from the doctors and nurses so I
I get pleasure knowing I’m giving back something for 20 plus years that I have been a patient. I have made many friends and know that sometimes a song can put a smile on a someones face or take away the troubles people may be going though.
I feel that I am doing something useful and also making new friends within the radio and the people I meet round the hospital. As well as the radio I also volunteer at the air ambulance charity shop in Atherstone as a fundraiser and also as a till operator.
Joe Challis I’ve been with volunteering on Wednesdays and Thursdays at Coventry Hospital Radio since 2001. My role is going around the wards collecting requests from the patients. I enjoy my role as
I have a lot of hobbies and interests to keep me occupied including DJ at local events and parties, 10 pin bowling, keeping in touch with friends on facebook, listening to popular music, season ticket holder for Leicester Tigers (Rugby Union), go to pub to meet friends (no alcohol involved), watching reality programmes, regular visitor to Blackpool and an avid Blackburn Rovers fan.

At present I am doing a lot of voluntary work

Radio has been part of my life from an early age. I started with CHR in 1992, this was when the studios were based at Walsgrave Hospital.
Hughie Greenwood
The station was then called Coventry Hospital Broadcasting Service (CHBS), I started doing the Friday 8 till 10pm show, I have been doing my present Saturday evening show since 2002.
I have been volunteering with Coventry Hospital Radio since 2013, over that time I have presented quite a few different shows, at the moment I present three shows a week, on Mondays and Thursdays I normally cover requests coming into the studio and on a Friday I co-present a sports prediction based show with Manj Sandhu. I enjoy doing my part at the radio because it helps me with my skills. I first tried to DJ at college and have always wanted to try live shows.

Meet Our Team I find hospital radio a great opportunity to put something back and at the same time playing great music to help people who are going through difficult times. I simply love radio!
Bob Griffiths I did hospital radio over 40 years ago and as I am now retired discovered CHR were looking for volunteers so I thought it a good opportunity to get back in to it. I started the training programme in late June 2016 coming to the studio every Wednesday afternoon. My show is based on UK and US hit singles and albums from mid-50’s to present day, including some new releases as well. My show has three features: First Hit/Last Hit or Latest Hit track by international recording artists. Bob’s Country Corner featuring two tracks, primarily American artists such as Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Glen Campbell. However, there is a developing country scene in the UK e.g. The Shires, Ward Thomas. Three Themed Tracks: one track in each half-hour for a theme on the day e.g. food, weather, or even a particular artist or band with a new album.
I started listening to music at around 8 years old! My sister, some years older than me, was buying records such as Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musicals and US singers like Johnny Ray and Frank Sinatra in the early 50’s. Dad played big band, Glen Miller, and some classical records. And then along came Elvis. I was hooked and it has been that way ever since. What an extraordinary period: Buddy, Ricky, Chuck, Don & Phil, Eddie and then ‘Oh Boy’ on TV with Cliff, Marty and Gene. I grew up in Birmingham: great rock bands, jazz and folk in the 60’s. Played drums for a spell and then as a ‘roadie’ for a group. On holiday in USA a few years back I visited Nashville and Memphis: sat on the drum kit at Sun Studios and visited Graceland. Still thinking about buying a drum kit! Have lived in Oxford, Warwick, Peterborough and Derby for work. I have two married daughters, three grandsons and one grandchild on the way. My wife and I moved to Stratford-upon-Avon in 2015. Stopped moving at last! We enjoy walking, wine, cinema, theatre and friends. Oh, and music!

Meet Our Team I enjoy visiting different wards and meeting some of our potential listeners, it’s great to be able to have a chat with the patients and promote hospital radio, at the same time it’s a very rewarding experience and I hope they find it equally rewarding.
Annette Gutteridge After my husband (Colin) started volunteering I decided in June 2014 to join Coventry Hospital Radio and try it out. At the moment I am volunteering every Tuesday between 2pm and 6pm visiting the wards collecting requests and also
Co-Presenting a show as part of a husband a wife team is only part of what keeps me occupied. When not in the studio I enjoy gardening, and our four grandsons (two of them twins) also keep me busy! I also attend Bilton Evangelical Church and assist with a local toddler group
I started volunteering with Coventry Hospital Radio in January 2014 after searching through the internet and finding the CHR website. At present I have 2 shows, on Tuesdays I co-present, and visit the wards for requests with my wife (Annette) On Saturdays I present my own show called Colins Choices where I play any genre of music and include such features as news, competitions, local events etc. Being in hospital as a patient can be a daunting prospect, especially if the person has no friends or family close by. Being part of CHR’s Husband and Wife team keeps me busy as well as having hobbies including model railways and chess.
Colin Gutteridge I’m also a regular attender at Bilton Evangelical Church in Rugby By broadcasting a radio show I hope to put a little bit of pleasure into their stay, and that gives me a great deal of satisfaction.

I also enjoy playing touch rugby and I go to the gym regularly.
After completing a university degree in 2013 I became a volunteer presenter with Coventry Hospital Radio presenting a sports related show with patients requests in between. I am currently working part time and thought it a good idea to join radio to try and give back what others have give me.
Manj Sandhu
My hobbies consist of playing sports like cricket, tennis and football. I also have a few interests in life such as music and socialising with family and friends.

different field of employment. I do the radio show because I love music, have a stupid collection of records which I want to share with the world.
Chris Jennings After doing some work every Thursday for a charity called Aquarius visiting people in hospital I had an interview for CHR. I now have my own show every Wednesday afternoon playing Northern Soul, Tamla, 60’s, R&B, Psychedelia, Funk, Punk, Oldskool, Rave, Hip Hop and everything in between. I am primarily volunteering for Aquarius to build experience in order to work in a
I love the buzz I get from doing the show and feel an enormous sense of well being knowing that I’m helping others in difficult times. I collect records and music memorabilia and have done for years. I have lived in S.E, Asia off and on for the last 10 years. I love abstract art, Aviant Garde Jazz and Ambient Kraavt Rock amongst many other genres of music. I climb hills and walk up mountains for fun. I love travel, exploring and experiencing totally new countries and cultures.

Dom Mottram
Hi, I’m Marty I played bass guitar in a band in the 60's and 70's, I have just passed my MOT and enjoying life to the full.
Born in the hospital before they knocked it down. Spent the majority of my life living around Europe trying my best to learn languages and have fun. Now spend my days living the dream playing with trains!
My all time favorite group is the Eagles.

When there are no requests I play the top 50 requested songs or the most requested artists. I enjoy music and want to share that enjoyment with those who are listening. I tend not to do much talking as I like now to let the music do all the talking for me.
Nigel Malka It was about August 2014 that I walked in to the volunteers office at the hospital and asked how I could become a radio presenter with Hospital radio. A couple of years on I am now the presenter of a 3 hour request show playing the requests which come in over the past week.
John O’Farrell Started volunteering with Coventry Hospital Radio a couple of decades ago around 1998 when radio was broadcast in black and white. Still presenting in the same way playing some easy listening with some ramblings in between, hopefully I bring a smile to someones face who really needs one.
I also have two shows on a Sunday corresponding with church services playing Christian music. I am retired and have many interests to keep me occupied, an itinerate preacher, church history and bible study, walking, bowls, chess, writer of plays, films and poetry, building show jumping courses, film maker, theatre lighting design and reading.
Aloka Sudiwala I have been working with the Asian radio industry for over 19 years (off and on) catering to a vast majority of the Asian population across the country and worldwide. I am also a journalist contributing to the local newspaper in Coventry.

Request Collecting One of the most important roles CHR carry out is visiting the wards, which we do on a regular basis, visiting and talking to the patients is an essential role within the radio. Some of our patients get little or no visitors so a visit and a chat from one of the Coventry Hospital Radio team is met with much pleasure and there is always something to find to chat about. Obviously the reason for visiting the wards is to collect the patients requests which are then taken back to the studio, they are then played at the first opportunity along with a little bit of friendly banter about the patient and their choice of song. The type of music generally played through requests is eclectic to say the least, typically you can always rely on a little bit of Frank Sinatra, Glenn Miller and of course The King Elvis Presley.
