Ross then crumpled to the ground after seemingly catching his studs in the turf while being pressurised by Graham and he failed to re-emerge for the second half, new signing Kyle McClelland coming on for his Cove Rangers debut.
As the half wore on, Cove were seen less and less as an attacking force, but Mitch Megginson almost wriggled through after a defensive slip-up just past the half hour mark. The captain tried to break between the home central defenders, but Muirhead recovered just in time, and Mitchell was out to fall on the ball.
With seven minutes gone, Lawless clipped a delightful ball over the top for McMillan to run on to. His low cross was partially blocked, but fell to Graham, and the striker fired in a powerful low shot which flew across the box. Turner was free, but couldn’t adjust his feet, and diverted the ball over from close range.
It took eleven minutes for us to get up the park, and we very nearly opened the scoring. Jamie Masson gathered and teased the Thistle defence, before feeding Fraser Fyvie on the left. The midfielder swung in a delightful cross, missed by the home defence, and keeper Mitchell had to look lively to push the ball wide for a corner with Robbie Leitch in close attendance.
A long ball forward found Tiffoney drifting in from the left, he flicked it beyond Scott Ross and drove into the box, but Gourlay was out swiftly and saved the forward’s low shot with his foot, diverting it for a corner.
Tiffoney always looked dangerous coming in off the left and five minutes before the break he escaped the attentions of Scott Ross and blasted towards goal, Gourlay again making an impressive stop.
But with time running out, Reynolds twice found space in the Partick penalty area to snatch an improbable draw.
Mark Reynolds emerged as the unlikely hero with the first double of his professional career as he struck twice late on to secure a point from a game which had long looked lost. Lawless and Bannigan had given Thistle a 2-0 lead, their advantage pegged at that only thanks to another outstanding performance from Kyle Gourlay.

Thistle began the match on the front foot, and very nearly took the lead with just forty-five seconds on the clock.
Kyle Gourlay then had to look lively to prevent Brian Graham from scoring after the striker ran on to a Tiffoney flick.
The home side did go in front in the 17th minute thanks to a moment of real quality. After a patient build-up, the ball fell to Steven LAWLESS twenty yards and the midfielder did not hesitate. He looked up and fired a powerful left-footed strike which cannoned into the net off the underside of the crossbar.

Out of the blue, we surprisingly got a foothold in the game.”
Thistle increased their advantage in the next attack. Tiffoney’s cross from the left skidded off the head of Mark Reynolds, but fell at the feet of Stuart BANNIGAN. The midfielder took a touch, then shot low and hard under Gourlay for a rare goal, his first in eighteen months.
Slack defending almost cost us a second goal. From a free kick out on the left, Turner whipped in an inviting delivery, and with the back line posted missing, Graham volleyed high over the bar from close Havingrange.survived that scare, Cove hit back. Fyvie rolled the ball forward to Masson, who gathered and fed in Towler. Evan sent in a low cutback which Megginson controlled, but his shot on the turn was blocked on the edge of the six yard box.
“
Seconds later, we were level. Logan floated the ball in, Gilmour headed it back across the box and Mitch’s flick was cleared off the line. Again, Mark REYNOLDS was in the right place. He controlled the ball on his chest before smashing a left-foot volley past Mitchell before being engulfed by his jubilant team-mates.

It was to be the midfielder’s last contribution. Having earlier received treatment, Fraser dropped to the turf again, and was replaced by Blair Yule, his return one of few plus points at that stage of the afternoon. Out of the blue, we surprisingly got a foothold in the game.
Shay Logan swung in a free kick from the left, Leighton McIntosh won his header, and when the ball dropped invitingly, Mark REYNOLDS was first to react, his shot from twelve yards deflecting past Mitchell. Suddenly, it was all Cove. Mitch Megginson drove into the box, his low angled shot saved by the legs of the home keeper for a corner.

With sixty-two minutes played, gaffer Jim McIntyre turned to his bench; Leighton McIntosh and Luis Longstaff replacing Leitch and Masson. Longstaff went for a run down the right in a rare Cove attack, and when he found space to send in a cross to the back post, Fraser Fyvie could only head over from eight yards.
Max spent last season on loan at Queen of the South where he was a first team regular, playing more than thirty matches, and featured against us in the two Scottish Cup ties and the Challenge Cup semi-final. He scored on his debut for Scotland Under16s in a win over Australia in January 2019, and subsequently earned two caps for the Under-19s against Israel and Hungary in March of this year. Max was an unused substitute last weekend, but believes this can be a big move for him:
“I was excited when I was told Cove were interested in taking me on loan. Having been at Balmoral Stadium on two occasions last season when I played for Queens, I’m aware of how well the club is run and how good the team are, as well as the brilliant facilities they have.
“I’m looking to play as many games as possible during my loan spell, and bring some of the things I have learnt at Motherwell to the team here.”
Boss Jim McIntyre was busy during the unexpected break between the Hamilton and Partick Thistle matches, signing two talented young defenders on loan from Premiership clubs.
Max Johnston – the son of former Scotland winger Allan Johnston – arrived from Motherwell, and the following week he was joined at Balmoral by Hibernian’s Kyle McClelland.

The manager believes both youngsters have many attributes that will serve the club well in the season ahead:
The twenty-year old central defender made his Hibernian debut in July in a Premier Sports Cup win over Clyde, played in two further cup-ties, and earned his first Premiership appearance against Livingston last month. He feels Cove could be an ideal platform for him to take the next step in his career:
“It was good to make my debut last week; it’s up to me to try to get a regular place in the team.”
“Like the other young players I have signed, Max and Kyle will have the chance to learn from the excellent professionals we have here, experienced guys like Mitch Megginson, Fraser Fyvie, Iain Vigurs and Mark “TheyReynolds.givememore
“I’d been out on loan with Falkirk before, went up against Cove, and liked how they played. I’m the sort of defender who likes having the ball at his feet, I’m happy to play out, but also to do the defending, the dirty work.

strength in depth, and options from the bench, which is what all managers are looking for.”
Jim has now made seven signings since taking over at Balmoral, the new boys joining Gerry McDonagh, Evan Towler, Luis Longstaff, Cieran Dunne and Charlie Gilmour at the club.
Kyle is a Northern Ireland Under-21 internationalist and joined the Easter Road side this summer from Rangers, where he gained experience in their Under-18 and B teams, and featured in the UEFA Youth League. He also turned out for Rangers B when Cove beat them 5-1 in the SPFL Trust Trophy in November 2021.

“It was just a routine warm-up, I didn’t roll the ankle or anything, it just became inflamed, and I couldn’t put any pressure on it.
“As soon as we came back training after the summer, I could feel the problem was still there. It was niggling away whenever
Blair had hoped that a bit of rest during the close season would allow the injury to heal, that he would recover fully, but it re-emerged almost immediately:
He felt a problem in his ankle during the warm-up ahead of the St Johnstone friendly and pulled out of the starting line-up, not anticipating then that his season was about to be delayed by months:

BLAIR YULE
“The issue began last September, and it flared up again in January, but it was all very manageable, and I was able to play through it without any great worries.”
While all at the club have been frustrated by the difficult start to our cinch Championship campaign, one man has perhaps felt it even more acutely than anyone else.
Having been a key member of the side which gained three promotions and elevated Cove Rangers up the Scottish football ladder, Blair Yule has been left kicking his heels on the sidelines this season, having had to come to terms with the longest injury absence of his career.
For the next three weeks, Blair rested the ankle and got treatment on it, and went out for a fitness test on the Balmoral pitch ahead of the Championship opener against Raith Rovers:
“Being named in the squad for the Thistle game was such a relief, and it was great to get on for the last fifteen minutes, just in time for Mark Reynolds to turn into a goal machine!”
“It felt great that day, I was able to do some sharp turns, and I didn’t feel as if we had overdone it, but in hindsight, I maybe pushed it a bit too hard, and we were back to square one.”
—
“That’s been tough. I’ve been lucky in my career, never been out for longer than two weeks in the past, but it’s something that affects most footballers at one time or another, and I have had to learn to be patient.
The rehabilitation had to start all over again, and Blair had to exercise patience:
“I got a jab to help with the healing process, and since that Raith game it’s been a slow and steady build-up, strengthening the muscles. I was back running again a fortnight ago, and was able to train properly last week.
I tried to put in the work, and it all came to a head at McDiarmid Park when I realised I wasn’t going to be able to play.”
It was really difficult. All I wanted to do was get out there and help the boys.” Blair Yule
“
“We all knew the full-time teams would have a huge advantage in this league, and you can see that in the games we’ve played. The good thing is that the dip in results has come early, and I’ve no doubt we can get a run going. The draw against Hamilton, then the comeback against Partick might be the turning point.
1415
That is something Blair Yule has had to work hard on for the past couple of months, but hopefully his injury nightmare is at an end, and he can now reclaim his place at the heart of the team.
“You need to be strong if you’re going to survive a football dressing room, and we have such a brilliant bond here at Cove, all the players get on, we all have each other’s backs, and despite some disappointing results, we all try to maintain the positivity you need in this game.”
Watching the team struggle to get results had been even more painful for Blair than the injury itself:
“I got the comments, they were going ‘Oh, there’s Blair, chilling in the physio’s room again’, but it was all done in the right way, and it helps with your mental toughness.
“It’s such a tight division; we just need to play as we know we can, and hopefully get some breaks along the way.”
“It was really difficult. All I wanted to do was get out there and help the boys. Seeing them facing up to challenging times and not being able to play my part was the most frustrating thing.
Fit again, one thing Blair won’t miss is the windingup he’s been subjected to by his team-mates:

Last week’s match at Firhill showed just how tough, and how unpredictable, the Championship is going to be this season. Partick are one of the favourites for promotion, they should be given the squad Ian McCall has assembled, and it was always going to be a difficult afternoon for us, but Kyle Gourlay put in another excellent performance, and the boys showed great spirit in digging out the draw.
If I’m honest, I wouldn’t have expected Mark Reynolds to be the goalscoring hero, certainly not in the way he finished the chances off, but he earned us what could be a valuable point. Not many teams will avoid defeat there in the months ahead.
JIM MCINTYRE
Seven games in, we still have to meet Arbroath and Dundee, both games here at Balmoral, to complete the first quarter of the campaign.
There has been some frustration – we deserved more from the games against Morton and Hamilton in particular – but I have seen plenty in our general play to give me cause for optimism. Individual errors have hit us hard, the players know that, and it’s something we are going to have to cut out moving forwards. For the most part, the team has shown it can compete at this level.
At that stage, having played all the other teams, we can properly assess where we are.

There will be changes, some of the guys getting much-needed time on the pitch.
...I have seen plenty in our general play to give me cause for optimism.”
It will give me an opportunity to see them in action, but it will also give them the chance to prove to me that they deserve to be in the side.
Without devaluing the SPFL Trust Trophy, this afternoon’s tie is clearly a chance for me to do that.
Of course, we would like another cup run, but the priority is the league, and that will play a part in my thinking today.
Enjoy the game! Jim McIntyre

2021
It has been harder than I had hoped to bring new players in, but with the recent captures of Max Johnston and Kyle McClelland, I’m now close to having the squad I want. We do still need a striker, someone to give Mitch Megginson a bit of support, and I will continue to work hard on that front.
I have had to ask too much of some of the players during the early part of the season; they will now get a bit of a breather, and a chance to let minor knocks heal more easily.
What I do now have is better options, allowing me to change up the starting line-up, and to make alterations from the bench.

Ultimately, we don’t want to be in that position in the first place, because it gives us a mountain to climb, but we need to take the positives from the game. For the second match in a row, the boys showed great spirit and fight to avoid defeat. Firhill is a difficult venue for any team, so to emerge from the fixture with a point could prove to be valuable come the end of the season.
The boys kept battling, and we created an opportunity from a free-kick, which Mark Reynolds managed to put away. We found some momentum, and you noticed the home crowd began to get nervous. We used this to our advantage, and from another set-piece we grabbed an equaliser.
“

It has been a turbulent start to the league season, and last weekend’s match at Firhill was a prime example of that. It was a tricky opening hour to the match, as we fell two goals behind and if it wasn’t for Kyle Gourlay, we could have conceded more. But we have got that attitude of never say die, we don’t stop until the referee blows that final whistle.
There’s no point being a Cove Rangers player if you don’t have that desire to win games and trophies”
We have already emerged victorious against Raith Rovers this campaign, beating them 2-0 in our cinch Championship debut. But if we are to progress this afternoon against the current trophy holders we will have to be at our best, and we will need your support throughout, similar to the backing we got back on Flag Day.
“
We had a good run in the SPFL Trust Trophy last season, reaching the semi-final, but we were disappointed to not reach the final. Last season’s successful cup campaign shows the drive we have to get far in every competition we enter. There’s no point being a Cove Rangers player if you don’t have that desire to win games and trophies, and that is no different this year.
After a difficult start to our Championship campaign, today’s match in the SPFL Trust Trophy allows us to turn our attention elsewhere and play without the pressure of picking up points in the league.
…we have got that attitude of never say die, we don’t stop until the referee blows that final whistle.”
Another positive from last weekend’s game was seeing Blair Yule back on the pitch after spending a period out of action due to injury. He’s been an integral part of the team which has come up from the Highland League, and has shown his quality throughout every season since. He brings energy and a drive to our midfield. Even although it was a short period on the pitch, it’ll get his legs going again and his match sharpness will improve every week from here on, which will help him push for a place in the starting eleven.
