SID’S ON THE SLITHER AND WE WANT HIM BACK!

John gledhill Ivor Hughes eric wells

Welcome to another packed edition of Covered – the magazine with commitment to the community. It would be trite to add my own festive greetings to everyone else’s, bad manners if I didn’t. So, here they are. But what I’d like to say more than anything is a big thank you to everyone who has helped Covered not only carry the title through its first full calendar year, but also release a sister edition in the Pudsey area. That’s not all – a third edition is planned for Otley/Ilkley early in the New Year - cementing our position as the area’s best distributed monthly. Changes achieved during 2012 haven’t only been external. We now have large well appointed offices in West Park. We have a yet wider pool of contributors and a dedicated sales team - though I’m still a long way from having a corporate jet. Or company car for that matter. But Covered would not have made it to where it is today without the continued support of the communities by way of readers, organisations happy to share their news and any number of officials and official bodies willing to do the same. Then there’s the support from our advertisers who, at the end of the day, make it all possible. Did I forget to mention the team? Them too, I suppose – they’ll cry otherwise. “Of the community, by the community and for the community.” That’s what I say (Abraham Lincoln nicked it from me). Yours in genuine gratitude,

Chris Barnham Editor

Busy Betty

This month I have been out and about enjoying the festive celebrations in our community. I attended both the Farsley and Pudsey Christmas light switch ons. And what great events they both were! Congratulations to all those involved in organising both evenings. Since Leeds City Council cut funding a few years ago, it has been up to local businesses to organise and sponsor such events. It was a great reminder of what we can be achieved when we all work together. Show your support to our local businesses and they’ll return the favour. It is also worth remembering that while the huge multi-nationals get away with tax dodging, our local shops don’t! Keep this in mind when the January sales begin!

The views of Busy Betty are not necessarily those of the publisher.

weeks. Possibly months! It looks disgusting and is a slip hazard. The majority of dog owners are responsible and clearly not only care for their pets but for the appearance of our area too, taking home their dog’s waste. As always, it is the minority who give dog owners a bad name. If you don’t want to do It’s that time of year again. Santa is leaving parcels, the dirty work, don’t get a dog! and it seems he is not the only one. Some dog owners believe that if they collect their canine’s ‘deposits’ in Finally, why not spread some Christmas spirit – a bag, it can be left on the footpaths for someone can you get a few bits and pieces for your elderly else to collect. Well unfortunately, I hate to break neighbour when you pop to the shops? And Betty’s it to these dog owners but there is no dog-poo fairy advice for this time of year? Wrap up warm and and she won’t remove your rubbish - no matter how take care on slippy footpaths - ice may not be all you might slip on! nicely it is wrapped! My photograph was taken on the footpath just down Have a great Christmas and Happy New Year the road from the Busy Household. This is one of two parcels that have been there for weeks and Love Betty

New Year

new you! What better time is there to recreate yourself than the New Year? We all fall into the habit of declaring our New Year's resolutions over a glass of champagne and then two weeks later reaching for a carton of cigarettes or ignoring healthy salads for tasty treats. How about adopting a new persona without having to make empty, cliché resolutions?

The Right Side of the Bed

'But what if my bed's against the wall?' Don't be silly, it's just an expression. You are in control of your attitude just as much as you're in control of which side you get out of bed; if you feel there's a wall of stressful responsibilities blocking it, then knock it down with an attitude of positivity! Start each morning by focusing on the things that make you smile, rather than on the fuss the snow may cause this morning; it may be a loved one, your favourite TV show or even a favourite restaurant you'll be eating at over the weekend which encourages you. It certainly won't occur overnight like good ol' pessimistic Ebenezer Scrooge, but give it a go and you'll be surprised by how much a positive attitude changes a day's outcome. Can't think of anything optimistic? Then stay in bed and be miserable! The key to productivity is positivity.

stress that causes you to smoke - you may start feeling disappointed by your failure to do so. Take your time! Try developing some new habits as the new year approaches, they may eventually become as addictive as tobacco! Try upping your water intake; you will feel revitalised every day. Carry a diary containing your weekly schedule, or even manage your money more meticulously; it will make you feel top of the world - never again will you have to look into your bank account and feel disappointed. Around Christmas, this is a lifesaver!

Release your inner Da Vinci!

Everybody has the capability to be creative - too often is the word ‘can’t’ used. ‘I can’t draw!’ ‘I can’t cook!’ ‘I can’t play guitar!’ Can’t, or won’t? Even the world’s greatest artists, musicians and writers had to start somewhere! Thomas Edison failed 1,000 times before finally inventing the light bulb. We’re not saying you’ll become a famous inventor with perseverance, but creativity is a wonderful outlet, a 2 Helpful Habits great way to relax and ease stress, and an excellent Who says that New Year’s resolutions have to be approach to feeling good about yourself. Learn an applied instantly? But what better way to make a instrument, start painting. Even write down a few new you than to start kicking old habits and bringing little limericks or anecdotes, releasing your inner in the new? Sure, smoking's a habit, but pressuring thoughts and emotions. Best of all, you may amaze yourself to stop for the New Year may worsen the yourself - and if not at first, practice makes perfect.

WETHERBY WHALER IN GUISELEY BRINGS BACK MEMORABLE FESTIVE TRADITION The Wetherby Whaler restaurant in Guiseley has brought back a much-loved Christmas tradition in tribute to the site’s history and former owner Harry Ramsden. A huge Christmas tree with presents for young diners formed part of the Christmas celebrations at the Harry Ramsden’s restaurant in Guiseley, and the Murphy family, owners of the Wetherby Whaler were keen to resurrect the festive custom. Philip Murphy, Co-owner of the Wetherby Whaler, said: “We are extremely proud to bring this tradition back. The Harry Ramsden’s Christmas tree was such a special spectacle that families from all over the country used to come and see it. Customers have often told me about their recollections of the tree and we wanted to bring these fond memories back to life for them. After decorating it over the last couple of days, the tree looks fantastic and I am looking forward to seeing our customer’s faces when they come and see it.” If you can’t make it to Guiseley then the Wetherby Whaler group includes another four high quality fish and chip restaurants, in Wetherby, Wakefield, York and Pudsey. Current owners Phillip and Janine Murphy began trading in fish and chips in 1969 so you can be assured the trip will be well worth it.

Calverley Players Present Ladies Day ‘Ladies’ Day’ was first presented in Hull in June 2005 and has since been performed all over the country and, most recently, at the Calverley Mechanics Institute. The play, written by Amanda Whittington, was performed by Calverley Players for four nights attracting an audience of approximately 200. The play follows four fish-filleters from Hull as they try to escape the tedium of the fish plant with a day at York Races. The play is funny, occasionally raucous and at times poignant. Audience members said: ‘There was a bit of everything: comedy, sadness and a good storyline' and ‘It was really enjoyablejust right for us'. The cast comprised local ladies Jill-Marie Shepherd, Julie Boldy and mother and daughter duo Sheena and Melissa Roberts. Completing the line-up was the only male cast member Paul Dargan. Directing the play was Alan Firth who has been directing for over twenty years. Previous plays at Calverley include John Godber's 'Teechers' and Jimmie Chinn's 'Albert Make Us Laugh'. The next production is scheduled for June 2013. Calverley local Colin Trenholme is still writing it. He joked that this will be a fantastic opportunity to see a world premiere!

Covered Community Champion Awards Are you a community champion? Do you know someone who is? Covered is looking for community champions – someone who has gone above the call of duty to improve the local area or who has gone the extra mile in providing great service or value.

Nominations can be for a person in service (Police, Fire Service, Ambulance, Council Employee, etc) a local business owner and/or their employees or just a neighbour who takes the trouble to mow communal areas. New Coffee Mornings at Farsley Farfield Café Following the lack of funding and subsequent management reorganisation at the community cafe, two local Farsley mums have decided they would like to keep the spirit of the cafe going and volunteered to run their own coffee morning. Every Wednesday, committed coffee lovers Adele Bowden and Katrina Wallace don their aprons and get behind the counter to serve up a selection of teas and coffees to a bustling brood of mums looking for a mid morning caffeine boost! There are a variety of home-made treats thanks to Adele and Katrina who are responsible for much of the baking. Adele has even been known to learn to bake something to suit even the most restrictive diet or special requirements whether that is dairyfree or sugar-free. ‘I haven’t quite managed a calorie-free treat yet though’ she joked. The non-profit making cafe aims to give a little something back to those that support it. They have recently hosted their first Christmas party and plan to have lots more events in the New Year. Farsley Farfield cafe is open to all – not just mums, but expect to be surrounded by them! – on Wednesdays 10.35 – 12.30 during term time.

Stuart Andrew MP Creativity has been the word of the month in the Pudsey c o n s t i t u e n c y, with a number of local schools participating in the ‘We Made It!’ competition. This new and exciting competition set schoolchi ldren the challenge to design a brand new invention, with the winning entry m a nu f a c t u r e d in a real factory. As a judge I was able to see all of the entries from my constituency first hand and was bowled over by the excellent standard of designs and inventions. These ranged from bug repellers to docking stations and all were unique creations which the pupils had clearly spent a lot of time working on. I was therefore pleased to discover that the winning entry from my constituency, ‘The Complete Shades’ by Jack Poole, Robert Ward and Lewis Woodhead of Pudsey Grangefield School, are among six of the entries selected as national winners. I am thrilled to be able to attend the awards ceremony in Parliament and look forward to meeting these bright students from Pudsey. I was also honoured to be asked to host a lobby event at Bliss, the special care baby charity’s parliamentary event on Tuesday 20 November. This was a chance for Bliss, MPs and parents to discuss the importance of the frontline nursing workforce on babies born too soon, too small and too sick in England. It came a few days after World Prematurity Day and one year after the launch of Bliss’ SOS campaign (save our special care babies, save our special care nurses). I first became involved with Bliss through my constituent Nicola Emsley and have worked with her on her campaign to improve services for premature babies in Leeds and would like to take this opportunity to recognise her tireless efforts and campaigning. And finally, I would like to wish all of my constituents the very best over the Christmas period.

Eric Knowles explained to me what sets Moorcroft apart from many of its competitors

Covered Roadshow Student John Gledhill got more than he had bargained for on one early assignment through Covered The employment team at Leeds Trinity University and Covered magazine have negotiated an innovative staggered placement scheme. Spreading the usual six week block placement over six months gives students the opportunity to report a far wider range of events and to be part of the full cycle of several editions rather than a snapshot one or two. One early surprise was that one Covered photographer is widely published in the international antiques and lifestyle press and would be inviting us on external assignments. London, Paris? Not yet – but Barnsley was a good start. BBC Antiques Roadshow’s Eric Knowles was VIP speaker and greeter at a promotion by Moorcroft Pottery – a select decorative brand adhering to arts nouveau and deco traditions that made it famous in the first place. In Cannon Hall, home of Barnsley Museum’s own collection of antique Moorcroft. Eric Knowles in action was itself an education. A Northern Soul DJ before starting his career at Bonhams, he knew how to work an audience – whether two or twenty or, in my case, just one. Having time for, and engaging with, all who put and keep him on TV and in print – and as a director at Moorcroft. Other lessons on the day? Well, apart from Moorcroft being outside a student budget, it quickly became apparent that celebs such as Eric are quick to accept you as a professional if you have the confidence and ability to present yourself as one. Still working on those, and glad to be getting chances such as this.

Keeping Your Trees Happy in the New Year – and Beyond After record rainfall during a cool summer, then floods and gales and now with freezes threatened on top of waterlogged soil, our trees have never had it so bad. Not to mention the question of whether the spread of the imported disease of Ash dieback can be arrested and eradicated, unlike the Dutch elm disease that hit our stocks so badly in the late seventies. It’s not only the trees themselves that are under threat. Trees close to houses or highways can do serious damage. And it doesn’t take a whole tree to cause havoc with your drainage system or less robust structures such as fences, greenhouses, garages, sheds or conservatories. You may be insured, but next year’s premiums would be under threat – especially if you benefit from the no-claims discounts introduced to home insurances a few years ago. There has never been a better time to call in the experts, the professionals. A healthy check and any diagnosis can be swift. Remedial action can be prescribed there and then – unless of course samples of soil or vegetation have to be sent away. But better to be safe than very sorry indeed. Then preventative medicine by way of a care, preservation and maintenance plan. You know it makes sense.

Thank You Pudsey Shoppers! Every month shoppers at ASDA Pudsey are asked to nominate a local charity or cause to receive a one-off donation of £200. Earlier this year, one of the funds chosen to benefit was The Isabella Grace Fund. Ryan and Lyndsey Senior established the fund in April 2012 after tragically losing their daughter Isabella, aged just ten weeks old. The Fund was formed to raise the awareness of Bronchiolitis and RSV which sadly claimed young Isabella’s life. Ryan and Lyndsey would like to thank all the ASDA shoppers that nominated their fund and thank everyone that has donated or have attended or helped out at any of their charity events. Ryan said: ‘The support that we have received since tragically losing Isabella in February has been both very heartwarming and overwhelming. Isabella's memory will be cherished forever and her legacy will live on. To each and every one of you from the bottom of our hearts we thank you for supporting the Isabella Grace Fund’.

This massive beech tree at Brodsworth Hall near Doncaster was found to have a rotted trunk last year. It was felled by professionals rather than left to chance.

Farsley Celebrates 30th Christmas Lights Switch On Thousands of people turned out in Farsley to mark the 30th anniversary of the Christmas Lights Festival in the Village. Live music was provided by Rock & Roll Sam, and local singer song writer, Daniel Seviour. Santa led the parade, along with the Leeds Pipe Band. Children and parents from local schools, Cubs, Scouts and Guides also took part in the procession. The evening ended with a spectacular firework display. Councillor Andrew Carter, who chairs the Farsley Christmas Lights Organising Committee, said: ‘We had a great night, with a fantastic community spirit. I would like to thank all the members of the Farsley Business Forum, and local businesses, for their support, without which we could not have put on such a great evening’. Councillor Rod Wood added: "All the effort was well worthwhile. A lot of hard work went into this year's preparations, and it paid off".' Meanwhile, Pudsey also celebrated with a parade that included not only Santa but the village’s most famous bear.

The event was organised by several scout leaders including Adam Frost, Marion Hall, Carol Chambers and Brian Rhodes among others. Carol, who has been a scout leader for thirty years, told Covered; “It’s been a lovely evening. Everyone is having a really good time. We do get together now and then but it has been really nice to reunite so many of our previous members to celebrate such a lovely occasion’.

65th Anniversary of 2nd Bramley Beavers Group Members of the 2nd Bramley Beavers Group, both past and present, gathered at the scout hut to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the group’s establishment. Past members were treated to a variety of refreshments – while reminiscing about their time as young scouts themselves. Photos of old camping trips and expeditions brought back fond memories.

Christmas Wreath Making Workshop The talented ladies at Ivy Florists, Pudsey, have been ensuring that the front doors of Calverley are some of the best dressed this season by running a Christmas Wreath making workshop. The two hour workshop was held in Calverley CE Primary School. For a small fee each of the seventeen keen crafters went home with their own spruce wreath decorated with a festive assortment of ribbons, baubles, cones, cinnamon and chillies. Refreshments were also provided with proceeds going to the school. ‘It’s been a really fun evening. All of the wreaths are so gorgeous’, said attendee Hayley Youdan, ‘It has been really good value for money. I can’t wait to get mine home and on my door!’
