Busy Betty
Stella Swinburne, McCarthy & Stone retirement apartment owner.
Local Matters
My story?
The views of Busy Betty are not necessarily those of the publisher.
“Time and money. Two things I wish I had more of before I moved and now I have both
Pedestrian Crossing Shoppers visiting the Co-Op or the Butchers in Farsley often find their trip takes longer than intended due to the long wait to safely cross Town Street. There is only one pedestrian crossing on Town Street, close to the Post Office, and a second crossing is essential. This is a busy street with lots of traffic and pedestrians and it is only a matter of time before there is a serious accident.
I lived in a three bedroom bungalow before I bought my apartment but it’s amazing how the little jobs that need doing add up. I was forever forking out for someone to fix this or that. Now I don’t have to worry about a thing. I reckon I’m at least £50 a month better off since moving. No gas bills as everything is electric. Just one service charge means no separate water rates, no individual window cleaner or gardener to pay for. And as for external maintenance that’s all included. Even my personal alarm I used to carry with me is redundant thanks to the 24-hour emergency call system. Saving money has also given me more time to enjoy myself and that’s worth more to me than anything else.“
Introducing a new crossing may mean sacrificing one, two or even all the parking bays outside CoOp but as there is a carpark at the rear of the shop, surely it is a price worth paying to be able to shop safely? Litter
Disgraceful. Pudsey’s ‘unofficial dump’
Despite the ‘No tipping’ sign on the Owlcotes roundabout (A6120 / A647) the area seems to have become the unofficial Pudsey dump. There is everything from plastic sheeting and car bumpers to food packaging strewn all over the grass verges. The problem is even worse for pedestrians on the footpath connecting Bradford Road to the Owlcotes Centre. This route (which is clearly visible by train passengers) is lined with litter including cans and wrappers - even discarded children’s toys. This area gives a really poor impression of our community and desperately needs to be addressed.
Ed’s Note: Committed busy body, Betty reports monthly on issues across LS28 & LS13. Covered Magazine is happy to highlight local issues such as the one’s featured in Betty’s article. We’ve successfully campaigned for improvements in other Covered distribution areas and have a good working relationship with Councilors and Leeds City Council itself. If you have a problem with litter, potholes, graffiti, dog fouling, etc and you’ve come up against a brick wall then let us know – we’ll highlight the issue and demand action.
Public Toilets
Contact Betty via chris@covered-magazine.net or call 01113 2819124.
Anyone unfortunate enough to visit the public toilets in Rodley may well think they had wondered onto a horror film set. They are surely a health hazard! Neither Farsley nor Calverly have public toilets – when nature calls, where are we expected to go?

New Rodley WI Group
Despite being the home of the regional Womens Institute HQ, until recently Rodley did not have its own group. Now ‘The Rodley WI’ meet on the third Tuesday of the month in the conservatory at The Owl at Rodley at 7.30pm and they are keen to welcome any local ladies who would like to be involved. The newly established WI group will be hosting a Fun Casino, with croupiers Natascha & Andrew who will be teaching the rules of blackjack and roulette. The ladies will then test their newly acquired skills with prizes for the person with the most casino chips at the end of the evening.

New Support Group at Children’s Hand books and information on other local support Centre for Parents of Children groups will be available to parents. The group with Additional Needs Parents of children with additional needs often have to deal with difficult or challenging behaviour and can at times feel very isolated. With this in mind, a new support group has been formed at the Farsley Calverley Children’s Centre to bring together parents of children with additional needs to help them through the difficult times. The aim of the group is to give parents an opportunity to share ideas and experiences and offer support to each other. They will look at the sensory needs of children with additional needs and what can be done to help meet these needs, including equipment available to buy.
intend to invite professionals to give advice/support where needed.
The next meeting will be held at 2pm – 3pm on Thursday 19 April. Please contact the Children’s Centre c/o Farsley Farfield Primary School for further details. Farsley Calverley Children's Centre offers services and support for families with children under 5 years old living in the local community. Other groups and courses they offer include Parent and Toddlers Groups, ‘Well Baby Clinic’ with Pudsey Health Visiting Team and ‘Doubled Up’ for parents with twins and multiple births.
Nearly New Baby Sale The cost of kitting out your child for the first five years can run into thousands of pounds and yet many items are worn or used so little they are often still in excellent condition when they are out-grown. That’s why Nearly New Sales are such a great idea. In March, ‘First Farsley Guides’ hosted their first Nearly New Sale filling Farsley’s St. Johns Church Hall with everything baby-related from cots to cardies, babygrows to buggies!
Sold! Another transaction takes place (Photo: Marion Cole)
Sellers were invited to sell their used or outgrown baby equipment, toys and clothes. The morning was a great success with over fifteen stalls selling excellent quality, pre-loved items and Guides serving up refreshments to hungry shoppers. Organiser Sarah Haley said ‘The morning has been a great success. We’ll certainly consider doing another Nearly New Sale again soon’.

Calverley Community Cinema Villagers in Calverley continue to be treated to films on the big screen when their 12th century church becomes home to a community cinema. St Wilfrid’s Church has joined up with community project Creative Calverley to boost village spirit and bring people together. The 28th April sees the screening of The Empire Strikes Back. Participants are encouraged to dress up in their favourite Star Wars gear. Children are very welcome and under 10’s enter for half price. On the 26 May one of the top ten greatest films “The Shawshank Redemption” is shown. Vicar John Walker said: “It’s going to be a unique experience. How many people get to watch movies in a 12th century church? The only down-side could be the pews – we’re advising people to bring their own cushions.” The screening will be at 7pm (doors open 6.30pm). Tickets cost £4.
An Englishman’s Home is His Shed We will have all heard the old phrase “an Englishman’s home is his castle”. More and more though, it has also been said that an Englishman’s real home is his shed.

So as summer approaches and we return to our gardens once again, spare a thought for your humble shed before a burglar does.
Increasingly there are incidents of theft from sheds and garages in the local area. CASAC have developed a range of home security products that are proven to be effective against burglars. Police are also recommending the replacement of vulnerable uPVC door locks with snap-secure Euro Cylinder locks and high security handles.
E F G O R E RS LA G NE AN A R LE C
There will be some readers who feel they have nothing more valuable than a spade in their sheds. Well, a spade may not be valuable to you, but to a burglar it is a very useful tool for forcing a door or a window.
For the past 11 years CASAC have worked with West Yorkshire Police on crime prevention projects and improving security on homes.
E F NS RG E O VE LA NG O N RA LT-I I BU
Simple measures like chaining bikes together or chaining them to an anchor point can dramatically reduce the chances of them being taken. It is quite common for thieves to walk to their target area with the view of cycling back – deny them their means of transport! Another tip is to keep power tools and hand tools in a locked cabinet. Or perhaps consider getting a shed alarm or heavy duty locks with a door bar for your shed.
CASAC (Community Action and Support Against Crime) is a Leeds based, non-profit Social Enterprise working to reduce burglary in West Yorkshire.

Sadly though, from a policing point of view, very few shed owners are giving their wooden ‘castle’ the security a ‘castle’ deserves. Shed burglaries are on the increase and this is not surprising given what is being kept in them. Stop and think for a moment about what is in your shed. Think about what it would cost to replace the contents. Is there a £1000 mountain bike being protected by a £1 padlock?

Keep Calverley Clean!
Creative Calverley’s latest community initiative is to “Keep Calverley Clean” (KCC). Requests are made for volunteers to spend a few minutes each week to clear litter. On a recent community walk around the village volunteers picked up three bin liners full of rubbish in just an hour. “We were surprised by the amount of litter that we saw and Victoria Park was extremely bad” said Katherine Slater, KCC project leader. ‘Creative Calverley’ and ‘Calverley in Bloom’ are working together to encourage a ‘Community Clean Up’. David Williams from the Calverley in Bloom Committee said “This initiative could not have come at a better time as we are preparing to ‘go for gold’ in this year’s Britain in Bloom award. The sooner we get the litter problem under control the better”. “We have really hit a source of annoyance for a lot of people”. said Gael Timbers, founder of Creative Calverley. Gael spent an hour cleaning litter in her street and three other volunteers offered their time as they saw what she was doing. “Picking up other people’s litter is not ideal, but it does make a real difference. It also makes life just that little bit more pleasant for people living in the village”. Why not start on your own street today? Or join in with community litter picking events. The initiative is a chance to get some fresh air, meet neighbours and help Keep Calverley Clean! For more information email Gael Timbers: info@creativecalverley.co.uk

The longer days and warm sunshine, has encouraged many plants to burst in to growth and flower early. It is exiting to think this is the time to rush outside, and start to sow seeds, plant salad leaves and start to enjoy the new growing year. A word of caution, make haste slowly, it will certainly grow colder before the summer and there may be an occasional frost.
HAGA Trading Hut, Featherbank Lane, Horsforth opens every Friday night from 7pm – 8pm for quality gardening products and friendly advice. For further information please visit: www.haga.btck.co.uk
If you have daffodil bulbs in clumps which have not flowered well, they will have gone blind (stopped flowering) due to being congested. Dig them out now, then replant them in loose groups with plenty of feed. Snowdrops and other bulbs should receive the same treatment where you wish to increase colour around the garden. With the new shoots of delphiniums and other juicy shrubs starting to grow, the slug and snail population will start to come out of hibernation to feast on your plants. There are many ways of controlling them, so take action now to prevent any long term damage. There have been many claims for garlic spray, to deter slugs, aphids and other pests -together with stimulating plant growth. The following recipe has been handed down over the years, so with no guarantees on its effectiveness, give it a try, you may be surprised at the results. Garlic Spray: 125gm of chopped garlic added to one litre of water.- with a small amount of soap. Mix well and leave to steep. Strain or filter, then dilute ten times and use. Start sowing small quantities of cauliflowers, cabbage etc, in pots every two weeks, for planting

Abbey Inn Car Boot Phil Gooding, landlord of the real ale pub The Abbey Inn, Pollard Lane, Newlay, ran the pub’s first boot sale on Sunday 25 March. An encouraging amount of stands turned out for the event, dotted round the perimeter of the car park. A typical, though small, range of spring clear-out goods were on offer. Phil intends holding the boot sales on a regular basis throughout the year and welcomes anybody interested in having a stall to call the pub for details. The Abbey Inn also hosted their own beer festival on the April 13 and 14, the pub hosted real ale and ciders, porters and lagers and finished the event off with some live music on the Saturday night with food served throughout the two days. The pub’s main beer and music festival, however, is to run from Friday June 29 to Sunday July 1 in what is sure to be a fantastic weekend. No calorie counting here – it’s all about the cake! (Photo: Marion Cole)
West Leeds Clandestine Cake Club
There are so many people who love baking cakes. Some have done it from childhood and some have just discovered a new favourite pastime. Whatever kind of baker you are Clandestine Cake Club is the place to be. There is no competition, it's all about baking the cake and bringing it along to one of the lovely cakey gatherings.
Over £1200 was raised and the beneficiaries were Calverley Parkside and Calverley C of E primary schools, also other local charities including The Cats Protection League, Childrens Cancer Charity, RSPCA Bradford and a local hospice.
Showing their cakey wares! Members of WLCCC
The event was organised by a small committee, lead by local mum Rachel Cline who says they are already thinking about next year’s event which will be even bigger and better!
But why Clandestine Cake Club? Well the venue is a secret until revealed to just the attendees just a few days before the event making it all the more fun. It could be a cafe, restaurant, church hall, school... anywhere really! The first West Leeds CCC took place at Leeds West Academy with over 60 attendees – and thirty fabulous cakes! For more information about the Pudsey and West Leeds Clandestine Cake Club contact Sharon Clarkson at www.clandestinecakeclub.co.uk
Spring Craft Fair in Calverley
Pudsey Art Group members take a break from activities (Photo: Marion Cole)
Pudsey Art Club Welcome New Members
If you’ve ever fancied painting or drawing and would like to give it a go surrounded by a friendly group of like-minded people then the Pudsey Art Group is for you.
Calverley Conservative Club was the host for the first Spring Craft Fair in the village. There was a huge variety of handmade goods from original art, cards, bags, knit-ware and jewellery all crafted by local people.
This informal art group meet on Thursdays at 8.45am at Pudsey House, next to the bus station. Some group members have been painting for over twenty years but they stress that the emphasis is on meeting people and enjoyment rather than worrying about the technical aspect of drawing or painting. There is a small charge for attending the group but materials are provided for those who would like to give it a try.
Whilst parents shopped, children were given the opportunity to have a go at crafting themselves as Liz and Michelle from Beanstalk-Creative showed them how to make felt hand puppets and decorate their own bags and plant pots. Some stallholders donated their takings on the day to charity. Charities benefitting from the day included the RNLI.
Emmerdale bad-boy Cain Dingle, aka actor Jeff Hordley, officially opened the first Calverley Spring Clean Garage Sale in March. There were over 70 stalls attracting a crowd of between 1000-1500 to the village.
There's suddenly a lot of talk about cake, and it's all to do with the Clandestine Cake Club. Founded by Lynn Hill from Leeds, her website has now become the social network place for cake lovers to meet up. Following articles on BBC's The One Show and the Alan Titchmarsh Show on ITV the Clandestine Cake Club has now come to West Leeds. So what is a Clandestine Cake Club? It's simple : people bake, talk and eat cake. There aren't many rules for Clandestine Cake Club apart from: No cupcakes, muffins, brownies, pies or tarts. There is no competition, it's all about baking the cake and bringing it along .
Calverley Garage Sale is Huge Success

As a group of retired ladies and gents they joked that too many of their members have died so they are keen to recruit new members! If you would like to find out more contact Shirley on 0113 2566433.

Stuart Andrew MP Talks
From my time as a Leeds City councillor I have long been interested in planning issues and planning policy. I am therefore pleased that the Government is seeking to simplify the process on this very important matter; protecting greenfield sites and giving local communities the final word on development issues in their area. There have been a number of such planning issues which I have encountered since becoming an MP and I am involved with several local community groups, such as Wharfedale and Airedale Review Development (WARD), working to protect the interests of the residents in areas threatened by overdevelopment. Currently Menston is at risk of having its infrastructure pushed to its limits with two new developments permitted by Bradford City Council on greenbelt land and there is talk of similar developments taking place on the Billings in Rawdon.
Covered Magazine 23 A number of colleagues and myself Local recently wrote to the Prime Minister Matters regarding the draft National Planning Policy Framework, asking that the Government ensure that brownfield sites are prioritised for development over greenfields and a solid commitment to sustainable development is made. I therefore welcome the final NPPF guidelines published in March as a clear sign of the Government’s commitment to protecting our countryside. This will make sustainable development a priority, putting local people in charge, building more affordable homes, supporting local jobs and local firms, stopping urban sprawl and protecting the character of local neighbourhoods. Protections for the Green Belt, for National Parks and Areas of Outstanding National Beauty will continue. It is vital that we take steps to protect the countryside and our local communities for future generations. However, as a note of caution, we must keep a close eye on things and ensure there are not unintended consequences as a result of the changes. Stuart Andrew MP Member of Parliament for Pudsey, Horsforth & Aireborough
Are You Due A Tax Refund? You are a pensioner or low earner and paying tax on interest. Just over 8.5 million people, including pensioners have money in a bank or building society. Many of these will have only a small liability to tax but are not entitles to receive the interest gross. They may therefore be paying too much tax and must make a claim to receive a refund You have not been given the correct tax code. The majority of pensioners will be entitled to the full age related allowance however many are not claiming this.
You have more than one job and have been put on emergency tax code You are a higher rate tax payer paying into a personal pension scheme and/or making gift aid payments. Relief for payments to pensions is given at basic rate only at source but you are entitled to claim higher rate relief that is currently a further 20% of the gross amount but a claim must be made.

St. John’s Goes Green Local residents and neighbouring churches were recently invited to St. Johns in Farsley to attend a Green Awareness Day. The church is proud to be the first church within the Bradford diocese to introduce solar panels on their roof, helping to reduce energy consumption and actually generate revenue as well as reduce bills. Representatives from Phoenix Works who installed the church’s solar panels attended the event giving advice to anyone wishing to install solar panels on their own homes. Thomas Newby from Phoenix Works said ‘ Installing solar panels will reduce your electricity bill and consequently your carbon footprint whilst generating a financial return through the Feed-in Tariff scheme to off-set the cost of the system’. With the recent sunny weather the solar panels have generated a lot of energy,400 KW hours in March alone. The church hopes to recoup the cost of the installation in just 8 years and then continue to get a good return for their investment. Rosie Tudge said ‘We felt that given the good south facing roof on the church, which is not overlooked by trees, we were in a position to help reduce our carbon footprint. We are keen to continue finding ways to reduce our carbon emissions and have other projects we are hoping to go ahead with this year’. Around 100 visitors attended the event to learn more about sustainable energy and were treated to soup and hot drinks, courtesy of the ‘sun’.

CoveredCoach - with Susan Harper Todd
Live The Life of Your Dreams One of my favourite quotes is “The danger is not in aiming too high but in aiming too low and achieving it”. We can create whatever we want in life - you might find that hard to believe, but having climbed Mount Everest I absolutely know that we can. You really CAN live the life of your dreams and I want to help you do that. Sailing across the Atlantic and climbing Everest taught me that we already possess all the tools and wisdom that we need to be able to create the life we want to live, we just don’t realise it. My role as an Intuitive Life Coach is to shine a light on the wonderful gifts you have hidden away within you, to give you back your selfbelief and help you to get from where you are now to where you want to be. For those of you who want to change something in your life, throughout April I am offering free introductory coaching sessions. So if you want to turn your life around please email: susan@ susanharpertodd.com to arrange a free session. I really want to help, because I just know how amazing you really are. Destined for the Manby Rally in Lincolnshire July, Kevin Bicknell and Dave Evans are hoping to attract sponsorship for – and on – their car. (Photo: Jake Harvey)

Pudsey’s Kevin Bicknell and navigator Dave Evans start their rally journey together when they head to the Manby Rally, Lincolnshire, for their first competitive race in July.
Calverley United - 0 Old Modernians -2
Calverley United suffered the summer blues as they were beaten 2-0 by Old Modernians in the Yorkshire Amateur League Senior B at Victoria Park. Calverley have struggled of late after previously working themselves up to an impressive third in the table and after uncharacteristic defensive errors were punished by an efficient Mods side. The hosts never really got started and Modernians took the lead with a scrappy goal from a couple of yards following a spilt cross from the left hand side. Calverley’s closest effort of the first half came from a Matthew Hall free-kick that forced the Modernians keeper into a decent save. After a stern talking to at half-time, the home side hoped for an improvement, but were again guilty of contributing to their own downfall when early in the second period Modernians notched their second goal. Calverley tried to mount a comeback but were limited by a solid Modernians back four. A looping header from substitute Lee Bryant looked to give the hosts hope but his effort hit the bar as Calverley tried in vain. Central midfielder Matthew Hurrell was awarded man of the match for Calverley who with just three games of the season left can probably see promotion just out of their grasp. Calverley United have a young team however and a comfortably mid table finish this season will be solid foundations to build upon for next season.

Farsley Fighting for Play-offs
Farsley enjoyed an exquisite March in the Evo-Stik First Division North as they went unbeaten and rose up into the play-off positions. Neil Parsley’s side romped to five victories and two draws, one of which was away at 3rd placed Witton Albion. The impressive month of March also saw the Farsley side win all four home matches at Throstle Nest as they surged into 5th; the last play-off place available. April will see the season come to a finish and Parsley’s men face three of the bottom six clubs in their remaining matches of the season. Farsley now know that play-off hopes are in their own hands and victories in their remaining four games could see them fighting for promotion to the Evo Stik Northern Premier. Hot on the heels of Farsley however, are Garforth Town who lurk in the shadows, only out of the play-offs with a goal difference of 29 to Farsley’s 32. The season is sure to go all the way down to the wire and Farsley will be hoping that star men Gareth Grant and Ben Jones are on top goal-scoring form to secure a play-off place and promotion for a second successive season since their reformation in June 2010. Farsley’s final match of the season is at Throstle Nest when they face Ossett Town in what could be a crunch match so make sure to get down and show your support on April 21st 3pm kick-off.
Kevin has grown up with rallying. His Dad and Uncle built their own grass track car, his cousins were into banger racing and even his milkman was a Formula Ford driver! Mr Bicknell, 35, remembers his first taste of driving. Following a move to Jersey in 2002 he was introduced to sand racing and after buying a £50 car spent a full season racing on the beaches. “I had some big accidents as well which was good! I won a few races but kept blowing up cars! I think I blew up six in 12 races!” One of the most memorable moments that he recalled was; “racing down a narrow stretch, six inches of space either side of a two brick walls and I was clocked doing 127mph!” Co-driver Dave Evans also has a wealth of experience in rallying as a navigator, he claimed “I much prefer to be the navigator; you need brains to do the job. It’s more of a thrill for me to navigate.” As a navigator you have to deal with an incredible amount of pressure; “The pressure is constant, even on the simple things, you can’t let your mind wander and that’s hard when fatigue starts to set in on the long stages.” Both Kevin and Dave claimed that the main purpose was to go out and have fun. The sport is costly with entry fee alone for the Jersey Rally in October at £450 with overall costs coming to about £1,000 for the weekend. Currently the car is open for sponsors, and what better way to get your company name spread around the country than for crowds to see it whizz past them on a race car. The two said; “It’s an expensive sport and we’re open to sponsors. Currently the car has no sponsors and it’d be great if some local businesses want to be involved.”
Spot the ball – Cardiff put the pressure on Leeds (Photo: Jake Harvey)
Leeds look Sharp Ahead of Cup Clash
Leeds United Ladies kept up their pursuit to become league champions as they saw off visitors Cardiff City Ladies 2-0 at Throstle Nest thanks to goals from Hayley Sharp and Jess Holbrook. Leeds took the lead mid way through the first-half, midfielder Sharp darting across to the near post to head home past the stranded Raian Nokes in the Cardiff goal and give the hosts a half-time lead. The second-period brought much of the same, Amy Turner went close while Sharp brought a brilliant save from Nokes and Jess Holbrook saw her well struck effort cleared off the line. Leeds continued to knock at the door, and when a loose ball fell to substitute and England International Leah Galton, she could only head against the crossbar from close range.
Cardiff then looked to have equalised but for a terrific save by Jules Draycott, she in turn hammered the ball forward, over the top of the Cardiff defence to the on rushing Galton, who got there with her head before Nokes to gift Holbrook the simple task of making it 2-0. Manager Chris Welburn said after Covered will follow the pair on all their adventures the match, “It was difficult, Cardiff are strong and and for more information on how to sponsor well organised, on the other hand I feel we dictated the newly formed team; e-mail Kevin Bicknell the play today and can be slightly disappointed not to have scored more.” kdmotorsport@hotmail.co.uk

Pudsey Primrose Run the Mile
Win £50 in the
Covered
Pudsey Primrose Primary school and others across Leeds and Yorkshire helped to raise money for Sport Relief last month. Pudsey Primrose’s Joanna Colman organised the school’s pupils and staff involvement, encouraging them to run the ‘Sports Relief Mile’ on the school’s field in aid of raising money for the charity. The day saw pupils from Reception all the way up to Year 6 running the mile and attending the day in their own sports clothes. Primrose’s Deputy Head Tony Lavelle said, “It was great for the kids, we have over 300 pupils here and all of them have actively contributed to Sport Relief today.” The pupils at Pudsey Primrose [pictured] clearly enjoyed playing their part in the fundraising for Sport Relief as they jogged around the field towards the finish line to complete their mile. The school raised a fantastic £416.10 in total for the charity.

Pudsey Libs Pulled Back Pudsey Liberal Club were held to a 2-2 draw at home to struggling Horsforth Fairweather as they drop down to third in the Leeds Combination AFL Division One. Pudsey went into the match looking to win comprehensively but were stunned as a resurgent Fairweather side attacked downhill to put pressure on the Pudsey defence. Strong defending and some great saves from the home keeper kept the green of Horsforth at bay as they knocked at the door for the opening goal with a succession of corners and freekicks. It was Pudsey however who broke the deadlock against the run of play late in the first half, a ball over the top of the visitors defence was latched onto and coolly finished with Liberals only shot in the first period. Pudsey went in 1-0 to the good and showed the difference in league positions is taking chances. The goal gave the hosts a lift and they pushed on in the second-half to put pressure on the Horsforth side eventually taking a 2-0 lead courtesy of a wonderstrike. A long throw into the box was headed clear only for the Pudsey midfielder to smash home a volley into the top corner from all of 20yards. Pudsey must have thought the game was won but a spirited comeback from the visitors saw them pull one back with 20 minutes to go, a well placed glancing header across the goal to set up a tense finale. Horsforth grabbed the equaliser with 10 minutes left on the clock, picking the ball up midway into the Pudsey half and slaloming through the team before finishing off with his right foot into the bottom right left hand corner. Both sides battled valiantly and a point apiece was arguably the fairest result on a sun glistened Sunday afternoon.
