Probate Matters? Most lawyers provide probate services for those who want them. But there is no law that says you have to have a lawyer. You choose. At the extremes, you can hire a lawyer to do the whole job, or you can do the whole job yourself without ever involving a lawyer at all. As a half way house, you can do it yourself but just ask a lawyer for advice from time to time on the bits you find trickier. The more traditional sort of lawyer might turn their nose up at this but we pride ourselves on being flexible and will tailor our services to your needs. So, how do you go about getting probate when somebody dies? You have to go to the Probate Registry and submit the original will (if there is one) and what they call the Oath, whether there is or there isn't a will. An Oath is simply a document that proves that you are who you say you are and in which you promise to carry out the duty of being the deceased's representative in accordance with the law. Taking out these grants of probate is something lawyers do all the time , and a good lawyer will happily guide you through the process. Once concluded you will receive an official certificate from the Probate Registry that says that you are now entitled to administer the affairs of the deceased. You then have to gather in all the deceased's monies, make sure it's all properly accounted for and then make sure it gets to the people who are entitled to it, either under the will or under the rules of intestacy, as the case may be. We can help as little or as much as you would like. Call your local office for further advice (details opposite) if you are in need of any assistance. Wilsons Solicitors

Keep Fit Keep Well Keep a Pet! There are hundreds of ways to ward off illness and health problems, but we are repeatedly advised: eat right, sleep right, exercise right - we know all that by now! To avoid sounding like a broken record, here are some different approaches to take for improving your health.

1 Not just a pet... Outside of the wonderful companionship and entertainment that comes with owning one, did you know there are significant health benefits to owning a pet? Extensive scientific research shows that petting cats and dogs not only lowers their blood pressure, but yours too. The purring of cats is especially therapeutic. The 'stress' hormone cortisol is significantly lowered in the presence of a pet; the mind is relaxed and tension eased. And let's not forget the opportunity presented when owning a dog - they need constant exercise which will motivate you to get outdoors and exercise too! Not fully sold? One of the most significant benefits of a pet is their unconditional love and incredible response to emotions. Research has demonstrated that they can sense illness, stress, depression and other ailments in their owners. Your pet will instinctively stay by your side, aiding you through the tougher times of life. If you don't have one, perhaps adding a pet to the family is just what you need to improve your wellbeing!

Yorkshire Crust is a new addition to Tinshill Road in Cookridge. Craig McDonnell and his wife Laura took over from the previous owners, Urban Deli, just 7 weeks ago and have already made an impact and some considerable changes. More than just a deli, by daytime Yorkshire Crust offers good quality, reputable local and Yorkshire products as well as home-made cakes and savouries. But in addition, they also provide cookery and baking classes, restaurant evenings and outside catering, as well as freshly made-to-order take home meals.

Yorkshire Crust This may all seem like a lot to take on board, especially when you include a young baby into the mix, but Craig is familiar with hard work. With 14 years’ experience as a chef, Craig has previously worked in award winning gastro pubs and fine restaurants and his last role was as chef at well respected pub ‘The Fleece’ in Addingham. This is the couple’s first venture on their own though, with chef Craig at work in the deli whilst wife Laura runs marketing and promotion from home in between looking after their first child.

Husband and wife team, Craig and Laura McDonnell

At the deli, Craig has an early start stocking up the range of cheeses and meats, preserves and snacks and baking the fresh bread daily. This includes a sun dried tomato bloomer and gluten free bread and can be pre-ordered to avoid disappointment. Other popular signature recipes include Craig’s chicken liver pate, pork and chorizo sausage rolls and Sue’s gluten free chocolate orange cake. Yorkshire Crust are looking at offering new gluten free products and running a gluten free evening in the near future, following the success of their first restaurant

Cookery lessons with Yorkshire Crust can be tailored to suit individual needs, or follow set lesson plans and are generally held at the client’s home. The concept is a fairly flexible one and can include an evening’s cookery with friends or wine nights, offering guidance on the correct wines with various foods. They will also be running regular cupcake making classes at the deli, running from 6 pm – 8 pm and starting in March. Included in the lesson is afternoon tea and the opportunity to make and take home your own cupcake creations. With so much going on and such dedication, it’s hard not to envisage a rosy future for the Yorkshire Crust. Plans include local farmers’ markets and eventually extending the dining area towards the back of the property so that customers can enjoy the view over to nearby Leeds and Bradford Airport. Further parking is already available to the rear of the premises. A new website will be up and running in a couple of weeks at www.yorkshirecrust.com and, in the meantime, they can also be found on Facebook and Twitter @Yorkshirecrust.

Coveredcookbook Starter

French bread for croutons Prawns, include several king prawns 2 Spring onions, thinly sliced Red chilli, thinly sliced 1 tbsp olive oil 4 tbsp white wine 2oz Butter

Main

1lb Lishman’s sausages 10 fl oz Red wine 8 oz Chorizo, chopped 2 sprigs of fresh rosemary, chopped finely 1 carrot, cut into small chunks 2 tbsp olive oil 1 white onion, finely chopped 1 tbsp plain flour 1 red pepper, finely chopped 1 tbsp red onion and port preserve

Pan Fried Prawns with a White Wine & Butter Sauce In a large frying pan melt the butter and oil over a medium heat. Add the prawns and stir well. Stir fry until the prawns start to turn pink (about 3-4 minutes) Add the spring onion and chilli and stir fry for another minute, add the white wine and cook until the sauce is simmered down. Meanwhile, slice the French bread to around 1 inch before toasting lightly. Arrange the toasted croutons on your serving plate before scattering the prawns and sauce over the top. Season with salt and pepper, to taste, and serve immediately.

450g waxy potatoes, such as Nadine or Desiree 75g smoky bacon, cut into fine strips 2 tbsp olive oil

Lishman’s Sausage & Chroizo Casserole with Sauté Potatoes Heat the oil in a large, deep pan. Cut the sausages into chunky slices and brown evenly over a medium heat. Using a slotted spoon, transfer them to a plate whilst you brown your chopped chorizo along with finely chopped onion. Add the carrot, red pepper and rosemary sprigs and cook gently for a minute. Return the sausages to the casserole, add the wine and season lightly. Bring it to a gentle simmer before putting a lid on the casserole, turn down the heat to low and simmer gently for 30 minutes. To finish, mix the flour with the softened butter to form a smooth paste. Stir into the casserole and let everything thicken for a few minutes, whilst stirring. Stir in the preserve before serving in a dish with a side of sauté potatoes.

Dessert

6 oz plain flour 3 oz butter 4 oz caster sugar 1 egg yolk 1 tbsp almond extract 6 oz strawberry conserve 2 large eggs 5 oz mascarpone cheese 2 oz ground almonds Icing sugar to dust

Prick the pastry cases before baking blind for 12-15 minutes, until golden. To complete the tarts, spread the conserve over the base of the pastry cases. Separate the eggs and mix the egg yolks, mascarpone 3 oz sugar and ground almonds. Whisk the egg whites to stiff peaks and fold into mascarpone mixture. Pour over strawberry base and bake at 180 degrees Celsius for around 15 minutes. Dust with icing sugar.

Spring is on the way!

The days are starting to lengthen, and with the occasional burst of sunshine, spring bulbs are appearing everywhere – starting with snowdrops, crocus, dwarf iris and early daffodils. On warm moist days it will be worth starting your protection against slugs and snails, who will love to munch on your early flowers. If the ground is not frozen or water logged, continue to purchase and plant bare root roses, fruit bushes and any other perennial plants and shrubs for a colourful summer display. The dahlia, chrysanthemum and begonia plants which you have kept frost free over the winter, may now be potted up and brought into the warmth. It is important to keep them in a frost free and light environment, to stimulate new shoots – which can then be taken as cuttings or left on the plant to flower this year. Sweet peas may be sown now, pinching out the tops after 6 leaves to make them bush out, and then hardening them off before planting out after the last frosts. Hardy annuals which provide colour in the summer may be started now, followed by half hardy annuals as the month progresses.

Broad beans are very hardy and may be started indoors for planting out later. Apply a dressing of lime to the area where brassica are to be planted, as this will reduce the risk of club root. Crop rotation is important when growing vegetables, use a three year system to reduce the incidence of soil dwelling pests and diseases. Many vegetables may be grown in reasonable containers, florist buckets etc, which means everyone can enjoy fresh produce even without a patch of ground in a garden. Stuart Andrew Mp Last month brought the welcome announcement by the Government that the new HS2 line will include Leeds, linking the North with London with a brand new high speed railway line. This will cut travel times from Leeds to London down to just under 90 minutes and will encourage businesses to consider moving outside of the capital and to invest in the north of England. I have long supported this project and truly believe that it will bring great benefits to Yorkshire. Our railways are almost running at capacity

as it is and it is clear commons sense that a new line must be constructed and this should be built using the most modern technology available. HS2 will make it easier than ever to travel to Yorkshire from London and will no doubt play an important role in increasing investment in Leeds. Of course it is important to bear in mind that HS2 is not a panacea. It is imperative that we improve connectivity around the North of England, between Lancashire and Yorkshire, Manchester and Leeds as well as more locally around individual constituencies. This is why the Government is investing in the Northern Hub and electrification across the Pennines in addition to a range of other projects. It is an encouraging sign for the future of transport in the North.

Farsley and District Art Club Farsley and District Art Club was founded in 1960 when a group of like minded people decided to put things on a formal footing. In 1965 they were given a studio in Westroyd House, New Street. Six years ago they moved into a well appointed stand alone studio in the grounds facing. Quite a large facility, necessary for their 75 members. Westroyd Studios are open on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7.30 to 9.30, on Thursday afternoons from 2 to 4 and also most Thursday evenings for tutored workshops. There are also scheduled workshops on some Tuesdays and Saturdays, field work as and when, coach trips to galleries as far afield as London and, a club tradition, a week in Scarborough. It’s just as well that attendance isn’t compulsory … The high spot for the club is their annual exhibition, this year Saturday 20 to Sunday 28 April; 11-4 at

Year of the Snake Just when you thought New Year was over. Well, it needn’t be. The Chinese New Year offers a further opportunity for celebration and a second chance for lapsed resolutions. Most people unfamiliar with Chinese culture associate their New Year with a single day celebration involving fireworks and dragon and lion dances. But there’s a lot more ceremony and protocol than that. For example, the reunion dinner on Chinese New Year’s Eve is comparable to Christmas dinner. All elders are revered on the day itself and, on the second, married daughters visit both sets of parents. The date of the Chinese New Year is fixed by cycles of the moon and can therefore vary by up to one month on the Western calendar. This year it was 10 February – a transition from the year of the dog to that of the snake, according to the twelve year cycle. People born in the year of the snake are regarded as stylish, thoughtful, wise and clever on the one hand, but stingy and conceited on the other. This year of the snake is reputedly a good one for planning and research – wise precautions in a year also prone to instability and unexpected change.

Director fuels up for cycle challenge on snakes and spiders With half a century behind him and, as some may say, carrying a few too many pounds, the last thing friends and colleagues of local businessman Tony Passmore thought he would do was cycle 500km from Vietnam into Cambodia in 6 days – but that’s exactly what he did recently. But that’s not all – in addition to cycling in temperatures in excess of 35 degrees, the challenge was spiced up as Tony was also given additional sponsorship by some to eat any unusual ‘foods’ he could find. This led Tony, Managing Director of Leeds based bathrooms to building company Passmore Group, to eat snake, tarantula, locust and cockroach as part of the deal! All for a good cause though, he raised over £2,500 for the Leeds Children’s Charity, who send local under privileged kids on holiday to a camp near Morecambe. Speaking to Covered, Tony, who is not a cyclist but loves his food said, “the biggest challenge apart from the huge distance was the extreme heat and humidity, with daytime temperature exceeding 35 degrees – not the sort of temperatures to be cycling in for sure.

But the added pressure of eating such unusual foods added spice to the challenge”. He added that one of the best experiences apart from the food was cycling past local children who, despite having little or nothing in the way of possessions, were always smiling and running to meet him and his fellow cyclists, shouting hello and doing hi 5’s (Tony travelled as part of an organised group run by Charity Challenge). With regards to the fundraising, Tony is delighted to have raised enough money to send 16 children away on a much needed holiday. He said “I am overwhelmed at the help and support I have received from friends and colleagues in raising such a lot of money, which is far more than I had ever hoped. It is nice to be able to make a difference to the lives of those less fortunate than myself.” For more information and pictures, check out Tony’s web site www.tonysbikeride.com

INTERIORS What’s hot & what’s not?

Texture! Touch! Classy! Interior trends in 2013 – mix it up! Each year brings an exciting new array of attractive interior looks which will spruce up your home, giving it a stylish, welcoming, and most importantly, a comfortable look. After all, it’s not just a house, it’s a home. Style it to suit you! Here are some great tips on what will be trending in 2013; mix it up and try a few differnt styles to bring out your home’s personality.

1 Beat the blues with some brilliant hues Bland shades and tacky wallpapers are gone; it’s time to bring the walls to life with some slightly saturated yet bold colours, such as sapphire, beige, and coral in your living room. Try pairing this with white skirting boards and door panels to create a sleek, neat and modern look, while still giving your home

a comforting aura with the warm, immersive hues. Symmetry is stylish, and if colour coordination is not for you, the reappearance of fashionable fresco is worth trying!

Fashionable furnishings; bronze, brass and wood

Why not sport a sophisticated set of wooden furnishings? Modern, painted coffee tables and dining furniture can’t beat the classic look of antique mahogany and pine. Wood is back in fashion, bringing a touch of nature and hominess to your rooms. Vintage and antique pieces of wooden furnishing have personality and uniqueness, but if that’s not you, spruce up your front room with some fashionable brass ornaments and furnishings. They’ll create a sleek, metallic and mature look. Get rid of any tacky plastic and ‘modern’ metal furnishings – this is the year to add rustic style to your home!

3

Feel the cosiness

We feel with our eyes as well as our limbs – this year, cool, pastel colours for thick carpets combine both our senses to help truly experience comfort. Pale greys, soft pinks and clean creams are some of the few trending carpet colours – avoid noisy patterns and dyes, which scream tacky! Nothing makes you feel at home more than a plush carpet complimented by calming hues.

Le Tour 2014 in Yorkshire Detailed routes for the first two (Yorkshire) stages of the 2014 Tour de France were announced at press conferences on 17 January. First at the British Embassy in Paris and then that evening at Leeds Town Hall. Stage One - Leeds to Harrogate via Harewood, Otley and Ilkley. Stage Two - York to Sheffield. Keith Wakefield, Leader of Leeds City Council, welcomed maybe 200 journos, cameramen and photographers. Then Tour Director Christian Prudhomme and Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire Gary Verity sang the praises of both the Tour and the county. Stage Three - Cambridge to London. Only the closing route through London was announced, so Transport for London Planning Director Ben Plowden had little to add. With around 120 kilometres of cycling yet to be found, between two points otherwise 60 kilometres apart, there must be plenty of towns competing for the spoils. Cambridge City Council told Covered that an announcement would not be made before October

Four main speakers at the conference – Keith Wakefield (City of Leeds), Gary Verity (Yorkshire), Ben Plowden (London) and Christian Prudhomme (the Tour).

– suggesting that it may well have been Yorkshire’s ability to make detailed proposals that tilted the scales in England’s favour. Talk has already started about the possibilities of an étape (stage) for the public and maybe an annual pro-am-charity event afterwards. Though widely supported, Welcome to Yorkshire has received no firm proposals as yet, nor has any to put to the Tour or county authorities. Watch this space.

Calverley Spring Clean Garage Sale 2013 Saturday 16th March: 12 - 4pm

Back by popular demand – Calverley will once again be holding a village-wide garage sale event on Saturday 16th March, from 12 – 4pm. The event, which is being organised by the two local primary schools, Calverley Parkside and Calverley CofE, will see residents opening up their garages, gardens and driveways to sell a whole host of preloved items, from bikes to clothes, toys to furniture and electrical goods; as well as home-made crafts, baking and much more. The Calverley Spring Clean took place for the first time in March 2012 and was a tremendous success. Over seventy individual stalls were held and the event attracted hundreds of people, from the surrounding area and beyond, who bagged some fantastic bargains. The event even had celebrity support, with Jeff Hordley, who plays Emmerdale’s favourite bad boy, Cain Dingle, coming along to open proceedings. This year’s event promises to be even bigger, with many other people keen to hold stalls, who have been stockpiling their wares ready for this year’s garage sale. Georgina Thompson, who helped organise the event last year, comments: “It really was a fantastic day. Lots of stallholders made some healthy profits, as did the two local schools. However, perhaps the best thing to come out of the day was the fantastic community spirit it unleashed. Local people, young and old, were out in their gardens and on the streets, talking to neighbours, earning a bit of money and having fun at the same time. We also had lots of support from local businesses and organisations, who either sponsored the event or provided services for free, such as free printing of fliers or advertising and we are hoping this will be the case again this year. “Spring is the time we all traditionally want to clean up and clear out and the beauty of this event is that it’s incredibly easy for people to take part. There’s no loading up the car to travel to a car boot sale or tip and the items are being recycled not going to landfill. So please come along and support what promises to be another fantastic day.” To find out more about the event, become a sponsor, or hold a stall, please email: calverleyspringclean@gmail. com or find us on Facebook ‘Calverley Spring Clean’.

Cobbled Square Some time ago, as part of the final phase of the Farsley Town Street regeneration programme, the site of the old toilet block was converted to a seating area. Unfortunately, the Council, in their wisdom, put in a small grassed area, with a seat on it, which they subsequently failed to maintain. As a result, local councillors, who had been the instigators of the regeneration scheme, met with Council Officers and agreed that a block paving surface should be put down to replace the grassed area, and that repairs be carried out to adjacent brick walls, which would then be planted with flowers. This work has now been done.

Out with the not so old. The ‘Cobbled Square’ seen here having been grassed over has now been returned to the modern day equivalent of cobbles.

area had been known as Cobbled Square, so this seemed very appropriate. We intend to put a sign in place, indicating the historical name Cobbled Square, when the work is completed.

Councillor Andrew Carter told Covered: "To be frank, what was done originally was unacceptable, as well as being impractical. Councillor Wood and I identified more suitable hardstanding materials, as well as re-using some of the cobbles that were taken up when we got the ginnel opposite resurfaced. TV STARDOM BECKONS FOR STANNINGLEY BRIDAL SHOP Staff at a Stanningley bridal shop are set for TV stardom when a new documentary hits our screens this month. The team at Confetti and Lace, on Bradford Road, were chosen to star in 'The Wedding Shop', a one-hour documentary to be shown on ITV1 on 28 February. The show takes a behind-the-scenes look at the day to day life of the award-winning bridal shop, and follows the stories of four local brides-to-be - from finding their dream dress to celebrating their big day. Filming was done at the Stanningley shop - and at Confetti and Lace's Harrogate branch and sister store Yorkshire Menswear in Rodley - between January and September 2012. Stanningley branch manager Jane Carter, who oversees a team of seven at the store, said that all the staff enjoyed the experience. She said: "The first time the cameras arrived, we were all a bit self-conscious and nervous, but after nine months of filming, we were all used to it - we nearly forgot they were there at times. The brides who took part were absolutely brilliant too. "The film crew were really lovely - they became part of the Confetti and Lace family, and when filming

finished, we all really missed having them around." Jane and her colleagues recently travelled down to London for a special preview screening of the show, and they are looking forward to the broadcast later this month. "It was really exciting to see how they had condensed 167 hours of filming down into one hour of television," said Jane. "We can't wait for it to be aired - having seen it, we'd urge everyone to tune in. Even if you're not getting married or interested in weddings, it is a really heartfelt and honest programme. It shows exactly what happens in a bridal shop, and shows how much we care about each and every one of our brides. It really is mustsee TV." Confetti and Lace, which has previously featured in cult BBC3 show 'Don't Tell The Bride', is owned by businesswoman Abbi Lewis, who recently opened her fourth store, Abigail's Bridal Boutique, in Leeds city centre.

PUDSEY BAR HIT BY BURGLARY A PUDSEY bar owner has vowed to rebuild his business after thieves ransacked his town centre venue. Daniel Wilford, owner of Cafe Liqueur on Lowtown, said that burglars stole more than £10,000-worth of bar equipment and stock while the bar was closed during the recent cold snap. The 28-year-old, who had ploughed his life savings into launching the bar in December 2011, lost so much equipment in the raid that he was forced to close the venue for more than three weeks. As Covered went to press, he was expecting to re-open on a limited basis in early February. Daniel, who previously managed the Shamrock pub in Pudsey, said that the burglary happened in mid-January, when the bar was closed for two days due to heavy snow. The thieves, who broke in through the back, took valuable equipment including a £3,000 coffee machine, a hot water boiler, a touch-screen cash register and two flat-screen TVs. They also made off with a significant quantity of spirits. Daniel said: "They took so much stuff that they could probably open their own bar with it all. "When I discovered what had happened and the destruction they caused, my heart sank. I have put so much effort and money into getting the business up and running, and into building up a customer base over the past year, that to have it put at risk like this is devastating. "In this business, particularly if you're competing against the big chain pubs and bars, every day you're closed counts."

Daniel, who employs a team of three staff, said that once the bar reopened, he would be focusing on winning back his regular customers and building up the private hire side of the business. He added that existing party bookings were still being honoured. "My biggest concern was that, by being closed for so long, my customers would find somewhere else to go," he said. "But a lot of our customers have been great, and even during the closure I've been getting calls from people who want to book the venue, which is good news. "We were doing really well before this happened, and the last thing I want to do is let my customers down. I am determined to come back from this stronger than ever." He also appealed for anyone with information to contact the police. The burglary came as insurance company figures revealed LS13 and LS28 to be among the top burglary hotspots in the UK.

JORDAN UPHOLSTERY

“I’ve been manufacturing suites for the best part of 30 years. Although we’ve traditionally supplied to trade, recently we’ve made the decision to open our doors to the general public. With us, you’re buying direct from the manufacturer, so you can have your choice of style, size and fabric without paying astronomical prices. Anyone calling in would deal with me personally and I’ll oversee it right through to delivery. You’ll never get lost in the system with us, we are small enough to give the personal touch but large enough to deliver All of our furniture is hand made in our on-site factory so we control the quality from start to finish and are able to offer you the highest standards of craftsmanship and of course, exceptional value for mone money.”
