What areas of family law can you help me with at Pudsey Legal? Is it true that divorce is a very costly and lengthy process? As long as the divorce is not defended or disputed by the other party for whatever reason it is usually a straightforward process, which can take up to 6 months. This does not have to be costly; we offer fixed fees that assist in keeping costs down. Q. If I’m getting divorced, will I have to appear in court? It is generally a paper exercise and you do not have to attend court if matters are agreed. However, if the divorce is disputed or legal costs are not agreed between the parties then you may have to appear in court. Q. Can we separate without getting a divorce? Yes, you can but if you wish to marry again in the future then a divorce is required. Q. Does a divorce always mean sorting out the family finances and home(s)? Not always, but it does help if you deal with financial issues and obtain a clean break, to enable you to move on independently.

Hello and welcome to Edition 26 of Covered – the magazine that delivers. What a month for the weathermen! Over the last thirty days we’ve had freezing temperatures, snow, sleet, hail, rain, glorious sun and gales – have I missed anything? I’m sure you’ll all join me in hoping more clement weather from now on. Certainly our hard working distributors will. It usually takes around 7 working days for the team to deliver 45,000 magazines, with most staff hitting about 600 letterboxes per day. Whilst the ice and snow was at its peak, this was reduced to around 130 magazines per day and there were 2 days when deliveries were not possible at all! Apologies to those that received their copy of Covered slightly later than usual, we’ll put in an order for snowshoes, ice picks and ropes next year! Or maybe, the local authorities could pay some attention to paths and pavements once the roads are clear. The provision of more grit bins would help I’m sure but it seems that very few streets meet the criteria to receive one. Let me know if you’re in an area where you feel a grit bin is desperately needed, we’ll push your local representatives to take a second look. The Local Pantry is a shop and café situated in Leathley on the main A658 road to Harrogate. On the site of the former Hunters’ Garage, it may still look like a petrol station from the outside, but inside has been lovingly refurbished to incorporate a café, kitchen and generous sized shop. The large windows provide beautiful views over towards Otley Chevin and there’s even a secure children’s play area to the rear of the premises.
The Local Pantry Opened in 2011, The Local Pantry is owned and run by a local family who have experience from restaurant and supermarket backgrounds and who are very committed to the ethos behind their business. They aim to provide good quality, affordable Yorkshire food and produce 7 days a week, at times to suit the community and passing trade, even up until 7pm most days. A little like all of the stalls at your local farmers’ market being rolled into one, and open at regular and convenient times. It’s a brilliant outlet for smaller businesses and great for locals and passing tourists to mingle over coffee and a scone. The Local Pantry are keen to champion their suppliers further by displaying photographs of them around the store, which is a lovely and personal touch, and makes you feel a little bit closer to understanding where your food actually came from.
In the café, the menu uses only products available from within the premises. This means that the Daily Specials Board will always take pride of place and feature imaginative recipes with seasonal produce, creating minimal waste. Brunch is also very popular, especially on Sundays, with variations on the menu until 3pm. The in-house chefs are also kept busy making many of the items available on the deli counter, ranging from ready meal solutions and cakes to the enormous Scotch eggs, which are available in a variety of flavours. The deli counter also offers a wide range of meats, cheeses and olives from Wetherby, and the delicious beetroot brownies are one of the many items suitable for coeliacs, with more gluten free products and dishes planned for the future, including cupcakes, pastries and bread. An odd few products are not grown in Yorkshire and are labelled ‘Not From Yorkshire’, and support is given to Fair Trade farmers elsewhere. A new alcohol license means they’ll soon be stocking wines and beers too, which will be a welcome addition for customers wanting to pick up a complete dine-in meal on the way home. The lasting feeling from a visit to the Local Pantry is one of commitment and community. There’s a genuine focus on the good, old-fashioned values of putting the customer, and their needs, first. 300ml Apple Juice
1 Red Onion
3tsp Baking Powder
1 Onion
½ cup of sugar
2 Carrots
170g Butter
2 Garlic Cloves
100g Butter
Parsley Bunch
125g + 50g mature cheddar grated
Pinch thyme
150g Goat Parmesan
Lemon Rapeseed Oil
4 heaped tsp red onion marmalade
200ml White wine
Rapeseed Oil
Roasted Beetroot Risotto with Beetroot Crisps & Goat Parmesan Shavings Place1kg of beetroot in tin foil. Drizzle in oil and thyme and wrap up. Roast in oven for 1hour at 180c before removing. Top and tail and peel the beetroot, then roughly chop before putting into a pan and adding the apple juice and sugar, and cooking to reduce by half. Add to a food processor and blitz to a smooth puree. Next, finely chop onion and garlic and sweat off in a little oil. Add risotto rice and coat in oil for a couple of minutes. Add white wine and reduce until liquid has gone. Gradually add stock a ladle at a time, stirring continuously. Cook until rice has softened, add beetroot puree, butter, parmesan and seasoning. To make the crisps, slice the remainder of the beetroot on a mandolin or cut as thinly as possible. Fry until crispy. Drain on kitchen towel and add sea salt. Serve with beetroot crisps and shaved parmesan on top and drizzle with rapeseed oil.
Split Red Lentil, Red Onion, Carrot & Parsley Salad Cook lentils on a moderate heat adding water throughout and stirring continuously. Once cooked, remove from pan and allow to cool. Finely dice the red onion and grate the carrots and mix in with the cooled lentils. Roughly chop the parsley and add to the lentils along with seasoning and lemon oil. Mix thoroughly and serve.

Fountains Gold & Bracken Hill Red Onion Marmalade Scones Sift flour and baking powder together. Cut butter into cubes and rub through the flour until the mix resembles fine breadcrumbs. Fold through 125g cheddar. Rub marmalade gently through mix until thoroughly dispersed. Add just enough milk to form a soft dough (you may not need all the milk depending on how wet the chutney is and the type of flour). Gently bring together the dough and pat out onto a floured surface to a thickness of approx. 1.5 - 2inches (or the height of the cutter). Brush with milk, sprinkle with the remaining cheddar and bake in a preheated oven 180/200 degrees celsius for 15 minutes or until risen, golden brown and firm on the bottom.

Yorkshire’s love affair with fish and chips Consider, if you will, your enduring memories of a Yorkshire summer. Licking ice cream in a deck chair on the East coast might be one of them. Watching the cricketers at Headingley could be another. But for many, it’s sitting in a leafy park eating Britain’s traditional takeaway – fish and chips. Time to go green with the Green Deal? This ground-breaking scheme is launched as part of the Government’s target to improve the efficiency of homes by reducing our energy consumption - and driving down our energy bills. Latest figures from the English Housing Survey have revealed: • 19% of the private rented sector was in fuel poverty (i.e. spending at least 10% of income on fuel) • 14% of housing stock was built pre-1919 • 19% of stock fell into the worst-performing category for energy efficiency Under the initiative, households can apply for loans from the Green Deal Finance Company - a nonprofit making organisation - to spend on energysaving measures, ranging from new boilers to roof and cavity insulation. Loans are repaid through your energy bills over an agreed period. As repayments are offset by the savings achieved, there should be no increase in your fuel bill. Borrowing rates are expected to be around 6.5%
As an incentive, the Government is introducing a cashback scheme. The amount you get is linked to the scale of work carried out. The loan would remain with the meter, and repayments taken on by the incoming owner/tenant who would continue to benefit from the improvements Benefits to Landlord and Tenants As increasing numbers of people become more energy conscious, it is expected that a property with low running costs will boost its marketability - and help it achieve its maximum rental potential. Lettings Demand For Hunters The on-set of Spring (finally!) has seen the Hunters letting team in Pudsey growing fast. Manager Elaine Collins and lettings negotiator Hazel Buxton have now been joined by Rebecca Lilley - a new administrator to help with the increase in demand for rental properties.

Covered magazine gives tips for those considering buying at auction to upgrade, restyle or simply save money Buyer beware Even with all of today’s consumer legislation, one place where the buyer must remain “beware” is the auction house. Most goods in general sales are sold as seen. For example, the majority of domestic appliances are sold with a warning to have them checked by a qualified technician. The exact terms of sale are usually posted on the wall or in the catalogue. The buyer usually has redress only if there was a clear error in the catalogue. Not worth what you paid for it, drawer sticking, wrong dimensions? You only have yourself to blame.
The inside and underside of many items often give clues about condition and authenticity. The oxidation, square nut and texture underneath this bronze are strong evidence that it is a C19th original.
Be prepared
Commission bids
Research is everything. Check for woodworm, rust, missing parts, cracks or other damage. The underside and inside of items can be great revealers. Remember – bodged repairs often cost more to put right than the original fault. If you are a complete novice then view with someone else, if only to compare notes. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Where did it come from? Is it in working order? What premium is added to the hammer price? Do I need to register before bidding? If you can’t deliver, then who can? Reputable and responsible auction houses don’t happen by accident – it is very much in their interest to build trust and confidence with their clients.
Those unable to attend on the day can leave a bid on the book. That does not necessarily commit you to that price. The auctioneer should still start the bidding at a reasonable figure - perhaps at the reserve or lower estimate. If you leave a bid of £160 then you might still be the winner at £120 (plus commission).
Where possible, refer to more than one antiques and collectibles price guide. But they generally refer to items in good order from a specialist dealer offering more guarantees than you will get at auction. An auction estimate of half the value suggested in a Miller’s guide is no guarantee that you have found a bargain. eBay results can be helpful.

Hold a medicine ball in front of your whilst in your regular golf stance. Swing the medicine ball as if taking a half back swing and then forwards as it striking forwards. Repeat the swinging motion for 20-30 reps to help strengthen your core.

Time for grass to have its first cut and scarify of the year.
Little and often is the motto for vegetable sowings, in order to enjoy fresh produce on a regular basis – without a huge glut. Every two weeks, make sowing of beetroot, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, peas, turnips. Onion sets, potatoes and leeks may be planted in bulk at the correct time, as these will take a long time to mature. The season is still cold, so be prepared for a slow start to working in the garden. Everything now depends on the temperature of the soil, so as the soil warms up: The grass will have been growing in your lawn, so now is the time to give it an initial trim with the blades relatively high. Then give it a good scarify with a long tine garden rake, to remove the thatch and moss which will have built up over the winter. Next we improve the drainage, using a garden fork pushed into the turf every 6 to 9 inches to a depth of 4 inches. The last item is to spread a spring lawn fertiliser over the whole area, incorporating weed and moss killer if this is a problem. Then as the season progresses, cut on a regular basis and trim the edges to maintain a perfect finish. Often overlooked, this is a good time to re-pot indoor house plants and permanent tubs outside. If the pots are too large, scrape away the top few inches and replace – incorporating a slow release fertilizer. Indoor and out door perennials may also be split, to fill in empty area or pot, keeping the freshest pieces and disposing of any old woody material.
Hardy annuals may be sown outside, although if you have sown these under cover, together with sweet peas, it is time to start hardening them off for planting outside when the worse of the frosts have passed. Cagefighting at Farsley AFC
The evening started at 5.20 with an amateur bout between juniors aged 14 and15 – 14 being the lower age limit widely accepted as the norm. An official line has to be drawn somewhere, with media and web reports of contestants as young as 8 being disturbing.
Ivor Hughes got his first taste of MMA at Farsley AFC in April. Here is what he found out on the night – and from an exclusive interview with one of Europe’s leading authorities. “Cagefighting” was given a bad name by a handful of TV features that focused on the most extreme examples. Those included ungloved and unprotected contestants in cages little larger than a broom cupboard, fighting it out until one submitted or was knocked unconscious. That “anything goes” approach has its roots in Brazilian ju-jitsu and has exponents and followers worldwide. But it is a very, very long way from the rapidly growing and internationally adopted sport now known as MMA (Mixed Martial Arts). So, what is MMA? MMA is exactly what it says on the label. It is a mixture of all unarmed combat sports. Although reputedly derived from ju-jitsu, the ones most in evidence are boxing, judo and wrestling. Opponents usually start by boxing, sometimes adding kicks. Then judo, to throw their opponent to the floor – with them on top. Then judo/ wrestling in order to gain a submission. Depending on the class of contestants, some blows are also permitted while they are on the ground. On the (Saturday) night Twelve fights, at amateur (3x 3 min rounds), semi-pro and pro (3x 5 mins) level. Twelve to fifteen is a typical evening.

There being no programme on the night, the uninformed would have had to try and find details on the internet or listen very carefully to the master of ceremonies. Only regular followers would have known the names, form and MMA clubs represented. Not that it mattered – having seen fights only on TV, I was there for the spectacle rather than the detail. But I’d be disappointed if I went again and found a similar lack of information. As for the spectacle itself? Impressive, fascinating and quite surprising. The level of protection - gloves and shin pads – varies according to the class of contest. As do the length or rounds and blows permitted. With a maximum three judged rounds, though few fights lasting that long, punches are traded fast and furious from the off. Some contestants test their opponents early on with powerful kicks – more karate style than kickboxing, not wanting to be grabbed and thrown to the floor.

Although the more proficient and evenly matched fighters spent a lot longer on their feet trading punches, bouts of wrestling are inevitable and frequent. Limited blows on the floor are allowed only at semi-pro level and above and were rarely telling. The general idea seemed to be to win by gaining submission with a painful limb or choke lock. Then it’s all over in a flash. Perhaps MMA hasn’t been going long enough for long-term injuries to be identified, but there certainly aren’t the same twelve rounds of heavy punishment to the brain endured by boxers. The surprising element is the total discipline of the contestants – and the mutual respect. They know the moves, holds and blows that are forbidden in MMA and are not in the habit of resorting to them. Maybe partly because it’s all on film. Another pleasant surprise was the composition and behaviour of the audience. Yes, some ardent fans got vocal during exchanges – but no more, perhaps even less, than at football matches. There were also plenty of couples and women in the audience. Clearly the majority had an interest in the contests but they were a far cry from the bare-knuckle badger-baiting brigade some might expect to see.

On that point, I spoke with Brian Herbert (Essex), 8th Dan Black Belt and Head of Jikishin Ju Jitsu Association. Originally a karate exponent, he now has over 2000 ju jitsu and MMA students in UK and is also founder member and Head of UKMA (GB), an umbrella organisation representing all martial arts clubs in UK including MMA; “There are too many self-appointed governing bodies to count. Many have their own agendas and vested interests. But the sport is growing at a phenomenal rate. Perhaps political intervention is necessary. But there remains the problem that MMA draws on so many combat sports, each of those with their own governing bodies and all of whom will want a piece of the action”. The next MMA evening at Farsley AFC is expected to be in October. Tickets for the April event were £20, £30 ringside and £40 VIP.
Does MMA have a future? Well, it certainly has a present. Around 200 clubs in the UK and at least one evening of fights promoted every weekend. But its future remains vulnerable and haphazard as long as there are so many self-appointed “governing bodies” with rules that need unification.

Leeds Beer Festival’s 20th Year in Pudsey The Leeds Beer, Cider and Perry Festival enjoyed its 20th year in Pudsey Civic Hall between Thursday 14 and Saturday 16 March. Being the St Patrick’s Day weekend, there was no shortage of Celtic labelled beers and music – though the fact that it was indeed the weekend in question just might help explain why the attendance of 2693, though healthy, was a little lower than average. Busiest session by far was the Friday evening, with over 600 pilgrims paying homage. Vive les Vermellois! It’s almost twenty years since a chance discussion between a Farsley supporter and groundsman paved the way for an enduring friendship between the youth teams, and parents and officials, at Farsley AFC and the football club at US (Union sportif) Vermelles. Vermelles is small town in northern France in the conurbation surrounding the old industrial, weaving and mining towns of Lille and Lens. An uncanny coincidence – you could equally be reading Farsley/ Leeds/Bradford. Vermelles has a population of around 5000. There is a Commonwealth WWI graveyard there, with over 2000 British and Commonwealth war dead resting inside - Vermelles and the surrounding towns and villages were pivotal in the fight for Flanders. This Easter weekend Vermelles sent over two teams, their under 17s and 15s. Each played three matches against local opposition. The results weren’t as important as the camaraderie and esprit de corps, as they say in LS28 - though their language skills are about to be severely diminished. US Vermelles has its own mid-May tournament, contested over the
Stonewalling Tactics The Dry Stone Walling Association, a charity, was founded in 1968 to preserve walls and the craft itself. It now has branches covering areas as far apart as the Isle of Skye and Cornwall - only London and the south east aren’t. Hardly surprisingly, in the north, there are eight branches between Barnsley and Burnley. And, although the West Yorkshire branch is in Huddersfield, it’s the Otley and Yorkshire Dales branch that has taken responsibility for repairing and restoring dry stone walls in north Leeds and beyond. Right now, the group is focusing its efforts on restoring the walls around the car park at Otley Chevin Forest Park on York Gate, opposite The Royalty Inn (long closed). Farsley AFC had raised the funds before they got the news. Thirty or so Farsley youngsters have been denied the experience of total immersion into a foreign culture and language and the opportunity to play in an international football tournament. And a visit to a cemetery where, 100 years ago, we buried over 2000 casualties not that much older than they are today. Incroyable... When working on Otley Chevin, the group usually meets on Thursdays at 10am, breaks for lunch at White House Cafe and finishes at around 4pm. Stewart Andrew mp It has been a turbulent few weeks for Leeds Children’s Heart Surgery Unit and it has certainly kept me busy over the course of the Easter Recess. There was much celebration in Leeds on 27th March following the announcement in the High Court that the consultation and decision-making process which underpinned Safe and Sustainable’s decision to close the Leeds Unit was flawed, and that the assessment of Quality – supposedly at the heart of the decision – was unfair and unlawful. The following day surgery at the Unit was suspended by Sir Bruce Keogh, NHS Medical Director, as he had received information from whistleblowers that the Unit was not of the highest quality, that mortality rates were disturbingly high and staffing levels and experience were a problem. It later emerged that one of the whistleblowers was in fact Sir Roger Boyle, director of the group overseeing mortality data across the health service and adviser to the Safe and Sustainable Review. Furthermore, the data was incomplete and unverified, as stated by John Gibbs, the head of Central Cardiac Audit Database (CCAD) who was responsible for preparing the figures.

Whilst it is great news that the Unit has opened once again, it has left many of my colleagues in Leeds and in Westminster wondering exactly why the decision was made to close it in the first place and we will be seeking answers when Parliament returns.

IF TEETH COULD TALK Farsley Dentist, Jon Swarbrigg, knows a thing or two about taking care of teeth. So much so, he’s written a book on the subject – ‘If Teeth Could Talk’. Over the coming editions Jon picks up his pen for Covered and will take a look at things from the tooth’s perspective, offering tips and advice on how you should look after your pearly whites. Let’s face it nowadays we want to keep our teeth for life! Let’s start with the basics. One question we get asked in the surgery every day is: How should I clean my teeth? Should I use a manual toothbrush or invest in an electric one? My personal preference is to use an electric toothbrush, Phillips make a great electric toothbrush but there are plenty of options – ask in the practice if you need some advice. The difference with an electric toothbrush is that you do not have to circulate the bristles yourself once you have the positioning correct at the gum line, the brush will do this for
you. Some might think it’s just going all high-tech for the sake of it. I assure you, it’s not. Independent research that suggests an electric toothbrush will clean more effectively than manual. You don’t need to get the all singing, all dancing model that wakes you up and makes you a cup of tea in the morning , a more basic models will do the job just as well.
Top Tip I wouldn’t switch the brush on until you have the brush positioned in your mouth, if you have the brush outside your mouth; you run the risk of getting splattered with toothpaste! Avoid brushes supplied with batteries; they’re not great as they lose their power quickly. You are better off with a rechargeable one so it is fully charged each time you come to use it. At least twice a day, if you follow my advice. GUISELEY LIONS CLUB CHARITY BEER FESTIVAL RETURNS FOR THIRD YEAR Guiseley and District Lions Club are to hold their third Charity Beer Festival at Coopers Bar Guiseley on Friday 17th and Saturday 18th May 2013. The theme is ‘Up Against T’wall’. Twenty four different real ales from Scotland and the Borders will be available along with a choice of wine and cider. Local businesses are sponsoring each of the beers and all proceeds will go to local worthy causes. Last year’s event raised around £3000 and Medical Alert Dogs, which trains dogs to recognise and respond to different medical conditions, were the main beneficiaries. The Lions also supported Eve Williams from Menston who suffers from quadriplegic cerebral palsy. Funds raised this year are to go to Callum Hall a 20-year old struck down by a rare paralysing infection. Callum, who has worked at The Station Pub in Guiseley for one and a half years, was fit and healthy until late September last year when he

began to suffer back pain. Just two days later he was paralysed. To help his recovery Callum will need specialist equipment and top-of-the-range wheelchairs that are not available in hospitals. Among the things he needs are an Easy Stand, which helps him to stand and reconnects his brain to his legs, and a Functional Electrical Stimulation bike to help maintain his leg muscles. Blooming Marvellous Time at Pudsey Spring Show Pudsey Allotments and Cottage Gardeners' Association (PACGA) has celebrated its 40th Spring Show - and not even an unseasonal bout of heavy snow could keep the crowds away! Nearly 100 people braved the blizzards to attend the annual floral extravaganza, held at the end of March at Pudsey United Reformed Church Hall. The show featured more than 300 exhibits displaying everything from flowers and plants, to fruits, vegetables, cakes and handicrafts.

University of the Third Age (U3A) You’d be forgiven for thinking that the ‘University of the Third Age’ was a group for those seeking enlightenment, spiritual or otherwise. Either that or a prog-rock band. It’s neither. U3A has its origins in Paris in 1979 but has since become an international organisation. The UK’s first U3A was founded in 1982 and now has 780 groups and some 250,000 members nationwide. U3A is not the usual sort of university – members need no qualifications and there are no exams. Instead, the focus is on offering opportunities and new experiences in a relaxed and friendly setting.

We built this city on rock and roll Love ‘em or hate ‘em: Gang of Four, Chumbawumba and Kaiser Chiefs are just some of the bands that hail from Leeds. What of the new generation though? It must be tough to afford equipment - let alone get gigs - in a triple-dip recession, amid benefit cuts and austerity measures. Luckily, times of unrest and uncertainty have always produced great music – Pistols, Clash, Jam, Specials- but who is gonna give new groups a platform? Well, don’t worry ‘cause Covered is on it and we sent John Gledhill to speak to entrepreneur James Reains about how he just might have the answer… James recently founded Leeds Mayhem, a site dedicated to promoting bands – and has now teamed up with Bluefruit promotions to create a ‘showcase’ where any band aged fourteen and upwards can play! ‘Two 14+ venues in Leeds closed last month [so] it is hard to give younger bands an opportunity to play their music. Most promoters work with bands [who are] eighteen and over,’ James tells us. This makes the fact that any band aged 14+ can play at the Leeds Mayhem showcase very unique.
Assistant Director Required! Kirkwood Theatre Partnership plan to take a large scale touring production of The Three Musketeers on the road in the summer of 2014 and they need your help! Performances are pencilled in at Middleton Park, Temple Newsham, The Royal Armouries and The Carriageworks, with other venues still in the pipeline. These will be large scale performances with over forty five actors involved and the partnership needs an Assistant Director at the earliest opportunity. Ideally, anyone interested should be available from now up until August 2014. Full rehearsals begin in January 2014. Training and support is available for the right person. Fancy getting involved? All the more so because, according to James then if all goes to plan, this could be the big break most bands dream of: ‘Leeds Mayhem will also be looking at maybe doing a small label in the new year, so this is a way of finding young talent and hopefully we can push bands to the next level’ he says.’ Chemical child, The Gonzos and No Hope without liars - just a few of the groups you might be hearing of soon - have all taken advantage of the fact that a full vocal PA system, amps and monitors are provided; simply bring your instruments, plug-in and play! What really gets us at Covered waving our lighters in the air is that this is all non-profit; James explains ‘I wanted to help get young kids off the streets and give them something to do. I hope this will help the community by giving kids somewhere to go. Any profit we make is put into the next gig’. Covered has a ‘more than a feelin’ that Leeds Mayhem is one to watch! Poetry is fun? Poetry is not fun is it? It’s all soppy metaphors about love - like empty vases and lonely clouds - according to Covered’s John Gledhill. So, when students of Leeds Trinity University and members of the public got together with published poet James Nash for an open mic poetry night at Horsforth’s Sandbar, we couldn’t resist sending our reluctant writer along to talk to James, who had a surprise in store... ‘I write about death, sex and embarrassment. The first two cause the third for many of us, and from embarrassment comes humour’ says James. Indeed, sex did rear its head in several of the poems read out, contributing to a very funny night. Yes, ‘anything goes’ seemed to be the mantra; one student gamely tried out his stand-up comedy routine, several more read out pieces they had improvised that day and there was even a cello recital! It seems poetry can be anything you want it to be and the sheer variety on display made it abundantly clear that anyone can do it – ‘don't listen to the 'my writing is so crap' voice in your head’ advises James Nash.

Participants on the night were equally inspired, despite a few nerves – they needn’t have worried though; the collective support was fantastic. Perhaps not surprising, as James notes ‘it's so important for artists and audiences to come together to share stories still, so through them we can come to understand the commonality of much of our experience. It's also just really good fun. ‘ While you don’t have to perform, in spite of his best efforts, your humble writer got dragged up and let’s just say…after a shaky start, the audience was putty in his hand – shame about those technical difficulties that, thankfully, didn’t affect anyone else…Still, what a night; best of all: no soppy metaphors!

James began writing poetry in his teens after reading Phillip Larkin and Ted Hughes at school. He was forced to stop when he began teaching; ‘there was not a lot left over at the end of a school day for writing poetry’ he explains. However, James’ passion would not be denied and he began writing again aged 41.
