Busy Betty
Local Matters The views of Busy Betty are not necessarily those of the publisher.
Following last month’s note regarding the unofficial Pudsey tip, or Owlcotes roundabout as it is more commonly known, I am pleased to report that the litter is no longer visible! ‘Hurrah!’ I hear you shout, ‘Leeds City Council have cleared the ridiculous volume of litter on the verges of this highly visible and busy road!’. Well, sadly, not quite. While I spotted a solitary council worker litter-picking recently (filling several bin bags I might add), this was no job for one man and he appears to have given up. It now looks like the council have adopted an ‘au natural’ approach to the problem, that is, let the grass and weeds grow long enough and the folks of Pudsey won’t notice the odd car bumper hidden under there. Busy Betty is not so easily fooled! A Missed Opportunity?
Later Living is safer and more secure with McCarthy & Stone McCarthy & Stone can offer older homebuyers a way of life that means there is less to worry about. Farsley’s replacement for the public loos – a wasted opportunity?
lonely looking bench with a huge litter bin at either end. I have yet to see anyone use this bench and wonder will those responsible for cutting the grass be expected to carefully trim around the bench and bins every time or move and replace them? Personally I think this has been a wasted opportunity. Raised flowerbeds that doubled as seats would have injected a splash of colour and could have been sponsored by local business. I’d love to hear what you think.
Also mentioned last month was the lack of public conveniences in our area. I can now report that the eyesore that was the public toilets in Farsley have been removed. In its place is now a small patch of grass and a Love Betty
Ed’s Note: Committed busy body, Betty reports monthly on issues across LS28 & LS13. Covered Magazine is happy to highlight local issues such as the one’s featured in Betty’s article. We’ve successfully campaigned for improvements in other Covered distribution areas and have a good working relationship with Councilors and Leeds City Council itself. If you have a problem with litter, potholes, graffiti, dog fouling, etc and you’ve come up against a brick wall then let us know – we’ll highlight the issue and demand action. Contact Betty via chris@ covered-magazine.net or call 01113 2819124.
We build our developments with an abundance of security features to minimise the risk of crime. Each apartment is fitted with a smoke and intruder alarm. There’s also a security TV camera at the main entrance. When someone calls, residents can see who’s there before they let them in simply by switching channels on their TV set.
Another reassuring presence is the House Manager, who looks after the general running of the development and acts as a good neighbour to the residents. In case of personal emergency, residents know they can rely on the 24-hour emergency call system, which is installed throughout the development. To start enjoying a McCarthy & Stone lifestyle give us a call. (Quote ref. CM105)

Ed Balls Comes to Play! There was a well-known visitor to Farsley Children’s Centre recently as Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls called into visit the Little Stars Childminding Group. The purpose of the visit was to see how Childminders work and to discuss how the revisions to the (EYFS) Early Years Foundation Stage and (NEG) Nursery Education Grant grant will affect them. Currently parents are able to claim 15 hours free childcare for 3 and 4 year old children. Discussions are ongoing on whether this should be extended to include younger children. Childminders also took the opportunity to discuss other issues such as accessing relevant training. Mr Balls clearly enjoyed his visit to the centre joining in with the children painting, making crafts and playing with play-doh - happily chatting to parents, childminders and children alike as he did so. Ed Balls was keen to discuss how the changes in the Working / Childcare Tax Credits might affect local families but as these changes had only just been announced on the day of his visit, parents explained it was too early to tell. Childminder Sharon Blackburn said ‘It was a great experience for the children as we had photographers, camera men, journalists around with all their equipment!’

Crawshaw School takes International links to the next level
Covered Magazine 11 Local Matters
First-time wedding fayre organisers Deborah Turk and Rachel Marcus were delighted with the success of their ‘Big Day!’
Crawshaw School’s International Ambassadors recently completed the first trip of its kind visiting Crawshaw’s international partners in India. After years of preparation, charity work and teacher exchanges, the first group of 4 students made the trip to India. The group included the school’s International Coordinator, Steve Smyth, who has overseen the development of the links with the GAV School in Kangra, Himachel Pradesh, Northern India, and the Tong Len Charity which helps destitute youngsters in Dharamasala to get an education.
St. Wilfrids Church and its adjoining hall, ‘The Barn’, was the chosen venue for Calverley’s first wedding fayre. There was a fantastic selection of stalls including florists, photographers, dressmakers and event planners – everything a future bride could wish for. Free samples from Neals Yard were available on the door and free goody bags with magazines, make up and beauty products went to the first 20 brides to make a booking.
The busy trip busy involved Crawshaw staff working on developing joint curriculum work, Crawshaw students and staff taking part in Lessons including English, Maths, ICT, Food Technology and Science, Crawshaw students working with GAV students to develop curriculum resources and Crawshaw students preparing an excerpt from Shakespeare with the Indian students to perform. The students also visited Tong Len Charity which Crawshaw has supported for many years that works with displaced community living in slum conditions and interviewing students and staff to find out about how the charity has affected their lives. The visit excited keen interest in local press in India when the group were interviewed and photographed for articles in two newspapers. The
Organiser Deborah Turk said ‘We would like thank all the stallholders for their support, Calverley C of E school, Adam Farquharson for his fabulous photographs, the people who took their time out to come along, Stuart Andrew MP and most of all St Wilfrid's church who let us use their venue’. group created a blog about their experiences and have been reporting back to the staff and students at Crawshaw since their return. Plans are already in motion for a return visit by staff and students from the GAV School in January. For more information about Tong Len, please visit tong-len.org

Great Jumble Sale
Thanks in part to Kirstie Allsopp and her giddy enthusiasm for all things handmade, crafting has never been so popular. Ladies up and down the land are turning their hand to needlework and are on the hunt for old garments and tired outfits that are looking for a new lease of life. And where better to find such items than at a good old-fashioned jumble sale? A recent jumble sale held at St. James the Great was a great success and raised over £230. Organisers Mercia Hayes and Pamela Pittman (pictured) were delighted with the great number that attended the event. Money raised will go towards work of the church and the general upkeep of the property.

Keeping Calverley Clean Local Calverley residents who were tired of the sight of so much litter have taken matters into their own hands and have been litter-picking in the park. The group are hoping that more people will get involved and say that just five minutes can make a difference. Calverley residents are being encouraged to clean up their own street or to help the Calverley Community litter pickers on their walks around Calverley. Litter-collector Gael Timbers said ‘A little action does make life just that little bit more pleasant for everyone in the village’.

Care is an emotive subject and the way it is funded, accessed and delivered is increasingly a matter of public discussion in the papers, on the TV or radio and on the internet. In a society where the extended family is no longer the main vehicle for delivering care, particularly for older people, it is something that we all need to address. Demographically not only is the population of the country ageing but average life expectancy has risen dramatically. Hence some people who need care may require support for 5, 10, 20 years or more. However, just because one day you are unable to tie your own shoe laces does not mean that you need to go into some kind of residential care. Sometimes just a little bit of help can dramatically improve a person’s quality of life and enable them to maintain their independence and continue to live interesting lives in the comfort and familiarity of their own home. Care at home normally involves one or more visits a day for relatively short periods, possibly up to an hour, to help with everyday tasks of life. Longer duration visits are often available including overnight help or even live-in care. With Local Authority budgets being squeezed many people have to fund their own care. David Brown Director of Bluebird Care in North Leeds said “Not only are people seeking the best quality care for themselves or a loved one but they need to know they are getting value for money. That’s why Bluebird Care has been so successful – we give people what they want. We will only deliver care to a standard that we would be happy for a member of our own family to receive.” We may all require some kind of care at some point in our lives. It is a fundamental right that it is provided in a way that promotes independence and ensures dignity and respect for the individual concerned – you, me, anyone!
www.bluebirdcare.co.uk Our staff Our staff are caring, trained to give medication and police checked. Alternative Bluebird Care offers a realistic cost effective alternative to residential care. With familiar friends, relatives and possessions around, Bluebird Care ‘just happens’. What we offer We offer everything from personal care to shopping, cleaning or social visits. In fact everything you need to stay in the comfort of your own home.

Cllr Joe Marjoram
Hello, my name is Joe Marjoram and with my colleagues Andrew Carter and Rod Wood I represent Calverley and Farsley Ward on Leeds City Council. Easter is often a busy time but hopefully you've had the chance for a break, if not a holiday. I’m enjoying the lighter evenings (but not the weather - yet!) and hope you are too. In the last edition I mentioned the proposed housing development on the Rodley part of the Ring Road, at the former Clariant factory. This was approved and up to 550 houses will now be built on the site. This will bring some welcome employment but it's not without problems, especially traffic on the Ring Road. There will be substantial improvements to Horsforth Roundabout and we're pushing for a full, signalised scheme at Rodley, which is a real danger spot for pedestrians. The houses being on 'Brownfield' will also help resist further development of our valuable Greenbelt. Our street surgeries have been a real success and we’ll be doing some more throughout the year – look out for your letter telling you when we’ll come. If you want to see us before then we’re at Calverley and Farsley libraries on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month – 10 am at Calverley, 11 am at Farsley. Great libraries, too, so plenty to do if you have to wait! I’m on Twitter @jwmarjoram, or, to find out who your local Councillors are and more about what’s happening in the City visit leeds.gov.uk
Stuart Andrew MP The recent local elections and London Mayoral election have kept Parliamentarians busy over the past few weeks, myself included, as many parts of the country took to the polling booths on 3rd May. Local Councillors of all parties work hard to help their communities and assist individuals who are in need of help and living in their Wards. I was therefore pleased to have been able to support several incumbent and challenger candidates with their election campaigns in their wards and know firsthand of the excellent work they do every day for their constituents. I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate all those who won their seats. I know only too well how much effort and dedication goes into an election campaign and it is huge achievement for all involved. It is impossible to ignore the disappointing result for the Government in these elections and there are certainly lessons to be learned here in Parliament. We are in the middle of the worst recession in many years and the Government is trying to introduce policies under an austerity budget. Of course it is understandable that voters have protested at the polling stations and shown Parliament how unhappy they are at present. It is the duty of politicians to now learn from this and listen.
Ladies’ Casino Night at The Owl
Mark Smith Your Friendly Local Plumber
Heels and ‘glad rags’ were the order of the day at The Owl at Rodley this month as the newly established Rodley Women’s Institute enjoyed an evening playing Casino games. The evening began with a short insight into the fascinating and highly entertaining past of professional croupier Natascha and her career sailing the world and working in some of its most glamorous cities. Natascha and fellow croupier Andrew then taught the ladies the rules of blackjack and roulette before allowing the ladies the opportunity to test out their new skills with free money!

Calverley CE School Olympic Spring Fayre Families from Calverley CE School and the local community braved the rain and wind and turned out in their hundreds to support the school’s Annual Spring Fayre, which took place on Saturday 28th April. To celebrate the upcoming sporting events in London this summer, the fayre had an Olympic theme and was officially opened by Calverley’s own sporting hero, Jamie Peacock, professional rugby league player with Leeds Rhinos. The awful weather meant some of the planned races and outdoor activities were unable to go ahead but there was still plenty to entertain all the family with a 50ft assault course, silent auction and raffle, beer and Pimms tent, BBQ and curries, face painting, café,

treasure hunt, as well as traditional stalls and crafts. Although they didn’t have the glorious sunshine at previous events, the atmosphere was still fantastic, and the school is delighted that they successful raised their £3000 target, which will provide a new interactive whiteboard and projector for the IT Suite refurbishment.
A Unique Gift Shop
Tucked away in the heart of Calverley, in a very quaint building, is @4a – a unique gift shop. The building, formerly occupied by ‘Cakes by Design’ is 100 yards from The Thornhill Arms. Since opening in October 2011, owner Katie, along with Mum Shelia and friend Kim, has built up a lovely range of accessories, handbags, jewellery, and some exclusive ranges of cards and gift wrapping from designers Janie Wilson and Caroline Gardner. Other gifts for a variety of occasions are always in stock – stationary by ‘Dots and Spots’, children’s gifts and baby presents to name a few. Homeware such as lanterns, glassware and photo frames are also available. Katie is proud to support local, independent businesses where possible and much of the range is sourced locally. Community spirited Katie provides a friendly, convenient place to shop and hosts regular evenings where you can visit the shop for a relaxed glass of wine (on the house!) and browse the latest products. Keep an eye on the website for details of the next event. Don’t worry if you can’t make it along to one of the evenings, the opening hours are in mind of busy, working people with the shop opening late until 7pm Tuesday to Thursday. If you prefer to shop at home, @4a also organise jewellery and handbag parties on request, at a venue of your choice. The organiser receives a £10 voucher if 10 people or more attend – a great reason to get the girls round with a bottle of wine or two, or three. @4a Gift Shop. 4 Blackett Street, Calverley. LS28 5NQ. Having established themselves in the UK and built up a celebrity following that includes Dannii Minogue, Ruby & GINGER secured €50,000 investment from Irish dragon Norah Casey for 35% of Ruby & GINGER. “We have a really great product line that was created by mums for mums and we wanted to expand the range and take the company to the next level. Entering the Dragon’s Den was a nerve wracking experience but a good one, we knew what investor we wanted going in and luckily for us she felt the same” commented Brenda Farnhill, Ruby & GINGER co-founder.

Be Happy Today! Have you ever noticed that what you give out you get back? If you give out angry words or actions that’s usually what you get back in return! If you wake up in a bad mood it’s likely that your day will continue that way. But if you smile you’re likely to receive a smile back. If you say thank you, you will get appreciation back. If you wake up and decide today is going to be a great day - guess what? It WILL be a great day! You are in control of your life and what happens to you. It might not seem like that. But it’s true. Just try it tomorrow. Decide that for a whole day you are going to be happy. To smile at everyone, to say thank you not only for what you receive but also for what you already have - we are so busy wanting other things that we forget to appreciate those we already have. Say thank you all day. Do something for someone, even if it’s just holding a door open for them. Act from your heart not from your head. And see how amazing your day turns out to be! Covered Writer Jake Completes London Marathon A mention that our very own Sports Writer- Jake Harvey - completed the Virgin London Marathon last month in a respectable 4 hours 37 minutes and 7 seconds as he ran for the charity Whizz Kidz. Jake said of the feat; “It was a phenomenal experience and I’m delighted with the time too. It was my first marathon and my aim was probably to be around the 5 hour mark - so to knock 23 minutes off that was incredible. I must say though, it feels quite embarrassing to be over taken by a rhino and two blokes dressed as a pantomime horse! And it was only at around 20 miles that I overtook a Womble!” Our writer added; “The London Marathon’s an incredible event on the UK calendar but to run it in a year which will be marked with the London 2012 Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee as well makes it extra special.” The marathon itself was somewhat tarnished with the news that Samaritans runner, Claire Squires, 30, unfortunately passed away in the final mile of the race. Jake said of the incident, “It’s incredibly sad to hear that Claire died, I saw a girl next to me on the home stretch fall backwards, I alerted the St John’s Ambulance crew, I just hope it wasn’t the same girl. It’s such a shame, 30 is no real age is it.”
Farsley AFC were denied a successive promotion as they were beaten 3-0 by Witton Albion in the Evo Stik 1st Division North play-off semi-finals.
(Photo: Carol Russell)
Jake is continuing to raise money for the charity Whizz Kidz, who help to improve the lives of disabled children in the UK and would be eternally grateful for donations as he looks to raise £1,600. “Whizz Kidz is such a fantastic charity and are unbelievable at what they do to help move lives forward for disabled kids.” He also asked us to thank everybody who e-mailed in advice and tips prior to the marathon, “It was great to get so much feedback and tips from readers, I hope they do keep in contact.” You can help by pledging on justgiving.com/ Jake-Harvey2 and support Covered’s sports writer following his efforts in the marathon. Pudsey St Lawrence CC
Cleckheaton wicket with his very first ball bowled for the club.
Pudsey St Lawrence kicked off the new cricket season in the Bradford Cricket Division 1 with a 47 run victory over Cleckheaton.
Next up for the side is Farsley and Woodlands away from home before ended May with a home league match against Hanging Heaton.
Pudsey set a target of 177/9 from their 50 overs with Adam Waite who scored 62 runs and Dave Hester, 65, weighing in with an impressive 134 run partnership. Just as impressive was the new, young and fearless bowling attack which dismissed the Cleckheaton batsmen for 130.
For more information and updates on the club and their results you can follow them on Twitter; @PudseyStLawrence

Neil Parsley’s side had the upper hand on Witton during the league fixtures, winning 1-0 at Throstle Nest and drawing 1-1 in the away tie, making defeat in the play-offs difficult to swallow. The club’s biggest win of the season was thumping 6-0 home win against Salford in October in front of one of their biggest home crowds of the season while they were narrowly beaten by Blue Square North high-flyers Guiseley AFC 2-1 in the West Riding County Cup Semi-Final in a spirited display. Farsley will be pleased with the campaign, after promotion last year, and will go into next season as one of the favourite sides in the league as they continue their assault up the lower leagues. Parsley and his men now have the close season to reflect and lick their wounds from the play-off defeat before knuckling down to what is sure to be a tough pre-season. The Throstle Nest club will be hoping to improve further on this campaign, something which will hopefully see Farsley gain automatic promotion and crowned as Evo Stik 1st Division North Champions.
Pudsey Table Tennis
Pudsey Table Tennis C Team was crowned champions of the Table Tennis Division Two and will join Pudsey’s A and B sides in the top tier next year. Pudsey C went into their last match of the season knowing that victory would give them the title. They started well and raced into a comfortable lead, which they saw through to the end, in an 8-2 victory over opposition Leeds YMCA. Pudsey F saw their campaign end in heartbreak, their final match of the season being a head-tohead thriller against New Farnley. The winners grabbing second in the division and promotion to go with it, Pudsey were eventually beaten 8-2. But the score line was hardly a true reflection of the match - which saw many individual matches going into deciding games.

Calverley Season Review Calverley United FC endured a torrid end to the season to finish 8th in the Yorkshire Amateur League Division B. The Victoria Park side had an indifferent beginning and end to the season as they lost their opening three matches as well as their final five as they finished in a respectable 8th position. Despite being disappointing at the start and finish, Calverley were strong and difficult to beat during the main bulk of the campaign and will be delighted to look back at the 7-2 away win against St Nicholas as a stand out performance during the season. Calverley will hopefully be able to delete both fixtures against Grangefield who trounced them 10-1 and 7-0 in their league encounters. As for next season, Calverley have a solid platform to build on and a better start and finish to the 2012/13 season could see them break into the top bracket of teams and perhaps get into the promotion places with strengthening and a good pre-season.
Rampant Rodley Ready For New Season Rodley Cricket Club got their new season off to a flyer as they romped to a 7 wicket victory in their opening match in the Dales Council A Division. Rodley began in the field against a visiting Baildon and picked off the opposition batsmen in swift fashion, dismissing the side for just 89 runs in a dazzling display in the field. The target could easily have caused a problem in the opening stages of the season but the hosts sealed victory in impressive fashion, reaching 90 runs and losing just two wickets to give the side a pleasing start to the 2012 season. Weather permitting, Rodley will face Hyde Park and Hepworth & Idle at their home pitch next to the Rodley Reserve - with a trip to Saville Stars wedged in between the two home fixtures. Hyde Park and Hepworth & Idle are sure to be difficult matches with the sides finishing 4th and 3rd respectively in the division last year. However, Rodley ended the 2011 season in 2nd position and have their sights firmly set on becoming the champions this time round.
