An untidy and neglected patch of land
Happy Tappy Feet Dancers from the Priestley Theatre Dance School wowed their audience with this years performance of ‘Happy Tappy Feet’ at Benton Park High School. Almost 100 dancers, from tots to mature ladies took to the stage demonstrating all styles of Theatre Dance, including Ballet, Tap, Theatre Craft and Modern Jazz. There was a wide variety of dances ranging from the very cute ‘Boogie Woogie Piggy’ by the pre-schoolers to scenes from ‘Oliver’ from the more experience performers.

Farsley Farm Shop New Opening Hours
Acoustic Gig Night at Cooper’s, Farsley
Farsley Farm Shop and Cafe at Farsley Farfield School recently celebrated their first birthday. Largely ran by volunteers, the cafe always offers great quality tea, coffee, homemade cakes and a warm welcome.
Cooper's Cafe on Farsley Town Street has become home to The Oak's Acoustic Gig Night - an evening of local musical acoustic talent! Having just put on their 3rd successful event, the team are getting ready for another evening on the 4th July. The evening is relaxed with a mix of background and performance music enabling you to catch up with friends, have a coffee, enjoy some cake and pizza and listen to some cracking music.
What was once a neglected and un-loved school kitchen is now a lovely place to be and becoming a real meeting place in the community. There really is something for everyone with classic movies on Wednesdays to Arts and Crafts on Thursdays. The revised opening hours are:
Lili of the Valley Crowds of crafters gathered at the Open Day Weekend at the new Lili of the Valley Showroom in Farsley.
The ancient picturesque churchyard, which has recently won an interim Gold Award from Leeds In Bloom, is the perfect setting for the angel and will appear courtesy of funding from Green Leeds.
Due to limited resources and in order to make the cafe sustainable in the future the opening times have been amended. The little cafe has big ambitions and there are plans to expand the menu but for the time being the cafe is sticking to what its best at – a good cuppa and a fabulous range of cakes.

The event is put on by The Oak Church and is held at Cooper's Cafe. Doors open at 7.30pm. Entry, food and drink are all free but donations are always nice. If you'd like to perform or would like any more information, please email: gignight@theoakchurch.co.uk
Talented local lady, Laila Ansbergs created ‘Lili of the Valley’ in 2004 turning her adorable characters and illustrations into a wide range of gorgeous stamps and die cut designs. It has since grown to be a well respected and much loved company in the UK crafting world. All the initial designs were Laila's and they soon became really popular at UK Craft Shows, on Crafting TV and of course on www.liliofthevalley. co.uk. Laila has since been joined by friend Lisa Barnes, and while Laila still translates all the images into the black and white stamp designs, the business of running Lili of the Valley now takes too long for her to do all the design artwork and so the company now also works with other artists to produce their gorgeous designs. St. Johns found a novel – and entertaining – form of fundraising in the form of a human fruit machine at their recent Spring fayre. Three willing volunteers hid in boxes and holding up pieces of fruit to a slot window while music played and punters placed bets. When the music stopped, punters cheered in delight if there were three matching pieces of fruit Bunting Makers of all ages gathered at Calverley at the windows. Funds raised on the day went towards the The workshop run by local community group maintenance and refurbishment of the church. Creative Calverley also gave participants the chance to take part in "What's Your Goal" in partnership test with Leeds and York NHS Trust.
Bunting Mad!
The campaign is inspired by the 2012 London Olympic Games. Participants are encouraged to set a personal goal and then represent that goal on a bunting triangle. The activity reflects the Olympic values of setting aspirations and attempting to achieve them as well as bring people together for a common purpose. Goals set in Calverley included cutting down on alcohol and losing weight. The bunting triangles will be sewn onto a length of rope which will be entered into a world record attempt at making the longest line of bunting taking place in Leeds later on in the year. Local groups e.g. brownies, WI, etc are encouraged to recruit members to submit entries to the world record attempt. For more info visit www. creativecalverley.co.uk

Get Stuffed? A Fox’s Tale...

There was a commotion in the hen house of one local family this week when the hens heard that a fox was coming to stay. Thankfully this fox is of the stuffed variety and no longer a threat to the family’s feathered friends.

The Cassani family from Calverley are one of ten families that volunteered to share their home with a stuffed animal for a week in the name of art in a project organised by ‘I Love West Leeds 2012’ called Get Stuffed. The family chose from a taxidermy selection from Leeds City Council’s Artemis archives which included a Chameleon, a barn owl, and a Water vole. The animal was delivered to the family home complete with an education and activity pack, giving facts about the animal and suggesting activities to do. At the end of its stay the Cassani family will be visited by local artists Lord Whitney and photographer Liam Henry to have a quirky family portrait taken.
The Cassani family admit to growing rather attached to their new ‘pet’ who they have name Kristofferson the Fox. He has supervised homework, watched TV and even been known to use Skype.
The images will then be used as a part of an exhibition during the festival in Armley Mills.

"The idea of a photowalk is to get people to look at the familiar from a different perspective, to get out of their comfort zones with their photography," said Anne, who lives in Calverley. "If people usually take landscapes, I encourage them to take close-ups of familiar objects, or maybe a whole series of photos on a theme. It certainly gets people thinking!" Community spirit in Farsley!
Dear Covered,
Dear Covered,
Absolutely have to agree with Busy Betty’s comments last month about the redevelopment of the derelict public loos in Farsley.
Monday 4th June delivered a fantastic day both in terms of the weather and community spirit. At 3pm Farsley high street was a hub of excitement and chatter as locals gathered to celebrate The Queens Jubilee
Firstly we have two tarmac paths either side of the 'postage stamp', what was the point of that? They lead nowhere and were, I'm sure, expensive to lay. The Bench is very small and placed in the middle of the grass, if anyone uses it we are going to end up with a soggy muddy mess very quickly as it hasn't been placed on any kind of sensible base. The bins are an absolute joke. A) they should have been placed off the grass and B) the one at the bottom end isn't near where anyone would ever walk so will not get used anyway.
As a resident of Farsley it was a great way to meet new people and catch up with neighbours in a wonderful setting of lively music, hay bales, children’s entertainment from Churches Together in Farsley and free cakes lovingly supplied by the Oak Church. It was really inspiring to see how much effort residents and local businesses had gone to in order to make the day special and reignite a sense of British pride.
Dear Covered, Just a quick note to say thank you for visiting our Jubilee events. It’s refreshing to see an independent publication taking interest and supporting in our community.
As to how the grass will be cut, well we all know that it will get a cursory flick over now and again and will be unkempt around the fiddly bits.
D. Mathers Farsley
Regards Susan Lacey

Well, and of course within the bounds equal opportunities, employees in the locality have two obvious advantages – attendance far less likely to be affected by transport disruption and an understanding of the community being served. Right now, we would like to hear from any voluntary sector organisations looking for helpers and about anything bearing on the local job market. Any other suggested topics will be most welcome.

I would also point out that the lovely railings which have been erected between the car park and the 'Farsley postage stamp' haven't even been installed correctly. The bottom rail at the end where the useless bin is, isn't even attached but just balanced because the holes don't match up poor workmanship there
What a shame, it wouldn't have taken a great deal of thought to tidy this area up in a more efficient and cost effective way.

Cllr Joe Marjoram I hope you all had a fabulous month.

Farlsey Town Street was certainly a picture. One resident asked if the bunting delivery lorry had exploded. Not quite, but it certainly set the tone for a well attended and very enjoyable street party.
June has been an exciting month for the United Kingdom and it has been wonderful to see celebrations taking place all over the country for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. I had already seen first hand such fantastic community spirit at the Rawdon Fun Day earlier this month and as an MP I have been invited to attend festivities across the constituency celebrating the reign of our Monarch. It is a real honour to visit Jubilee parties in local primary schools, street parties and to see what local businesses have been doing to mark this momentous time in our country's history. It is commendable that communities have come together in these difficult economic times to celebrate in style and I have certainly eaten my fair share of Jubilee cakes. I hope to see such patriotic support continuing into the months of July and August when we all come together to support both our Olympic and Paralympic teams in the forthcoming London 2012 Games. Events will be taking place throughout the country and I look forward in particular tocheering on our Yorkshire athletes and wish them well in their endeavours to do our country proud. As the Olympic Torch passes through Leeds it is impossible not to think that we are, as a nation, experiencing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity people of all ages can enjoy.

Calverley was also well-dressed and the Children's Party had a large, cheerful crowd. Even for those of a more Republican mindset, I hope you’ll agree it was great to see the local community coming together in such a happy way. Your local Councillors have now received the details of a planning application for 380 homes at Kirklees Knoll, the triangle of land between the Ring Road, Farsley and Rodley. Cllr Carter and I are opposing this and you can lend your support by signing the i-petition. This open space is a vital 'break' between the communities and we will resist any development that turns the area into one vast settlement.

CoveredCoach - with Susan Harper Todd
Whether or not you participated in any of the Jubilee celebrations, there is no denying that they were a wonderful display of unity and community. It was wonderful to see – whole streets partying together, strangers striking up friendships with each other… These days it doesn’t happen that often, does it? We don’t generally talk to strangers. We have become an isolated society with everyone doing their ‘own thing’, not wanting to share their secrets of success in case anyone pinches their idea. With people not wanting to ask for help when they need it, because our sort of society sees it as a sign of weakness. But the uplifting feeling generated by the togetherness of the Jubilee celebrations are an illustration of how wonderful it is to share things. The word TEAM stands for Together Everyone Achieves More. Doesn’t that say it all? And it is SO true! If you need help ask for it – there will be someone out there with the solution. If you have no one to share things with, join a club, take an evening class, dance lessons. And speak to people – a stranger even – he or she might even be the one you’ve been waiting for! Pudsey Endure Tough Run of Results
Pudsey St Lawrence endured a difficult month which has seen them lose three of the four matches they have played. St Lawrence were beaten heavily by a mightily impressive Woodlands side in both the league and cup in successive games, losing by 149 runs in the league and five wickets in the cup. The Pudsey side did bounce back from the drubbings to see off Hanging Heaton by 16 runs in day where the batsmen shone. Mark Robertshaw hit a solid century while James Smith wasn’t far behind as he notched up 84 as Pudsey set a high target of 312 for the visiting Hanging Heaton.

Unfortunately St Lawrence couldn’t carry the form from that fixture into the next as Bradford and Bingley dispatched the side with five wickets to spare. Pudsey then hosted Lightcliffe and despite reducing the opposition to 125-8 the fixture was abandoned due to constant rain. PSL’s bowler Gareth Clough would have been less than pleased considering he had taken the wickets in successive overs earlier in the match. Next up, the 1st team is head to Saltaire and end June’s matches by hosting East Bierley. Pudsey will be hoping that the last few defeats are just a dip in form as they battle to return to winning ways. advice

Rodley Take the Initiative Rodley Cricket Club has been selected as one of just 12 UK based focus clubs by the MCC at Lords as part of the ‘Taking The Field’ initiative. ‘Taking The Field’ aims to celebrate grass roots cricket, the club’s social history and the importance they play within their communities. A representative of the MCC recently visited the Rodley club to interview past and current members of the club and gather stories which will appear on takingthefield. com/clubs/rodley-cricket-club while some may also be displayed at the prestigious MCC Museum where the ‘Ashes’ are stored. On the field, Rodley sit in second place in the top division of the Dales Council Cricket League after four wins and a disappointing 8 run loss to leaders Apperley Bridge. Only two points separate the two sides after Rodley failed to reach their 202 run target, despite Mark Hobson and Gary Walton both hitting half centuries. A bright start to the season saw Rodley win all their opening four matches with relative ease with the highlight being 51 by opener Gary Sagar against Hepworth & Idle. Defeat at the hands of Apperley Bridge followed but Rodley bounced back with consecutive wins against Crompark and Hawksworth.
Meanwhile the second team sit towards the lower end of a very competitive league with two wins and three losses. Veteran left-arm seamer Mark Allinson’s five wickets for just 31 runs in the victory over Adel, was unbelievably overshadowed by the bowling of 16 year-old Dylan Schofield who took an incredible six for 11 runs against the previously unbeaten Apperley Bridge B. Rodley now face some tricky fixtures including the visit of reigning champions Leeds Sikh who finished one place ahead of Rodley in 2011, and a tough home cup game against Hyde Park.

Comeback Kids Win Cup Priesthorpe school’s year 10’s overcame the odds to triumph in the Leeds Schools Champions Shield as they beat Woodkirk school in a nail biting finale. The final, played at the John Charles Stadium was a thriller and Priesthorpe would have been forgiven for thinking they would lose the match as they trailed 20-4 at the half-time interval.

An abundance of spirit and determination brought the lads back into contention early on in the second period and Woodhouse were powerless to resist the Priest comeback. A tense, nail biting finish was enough to get everyone excited but it was the Priesthorpe boys who were jubilant at the final whistle. Tries came from Josh Foster, Natahan Benson, Ashton Golding and Jake Hrintchuk as they helped their school’s name get etched onto the impressive Champions Shield.
